Big bad bodyguard Joseph Allario kept his secret fear close to his vest until a so-called cupcake assignment takes him to London to play undercover babysitter to Lady Veronica Douglas. Ronnie lost her parents and made a deathbed promise to prove her father was murdered. Joe finds himself falling for Ronnie as he tries to stop the killer before the killer stops her. Even if it means overcoming the one thing he fears most.

Joe knows romance with Ronnie is a bad idea. Too bad his heart didn’t get the message.

Joe thinks his assignment protecting Ronnie will be an easy one. All he has to do is keep the young woman out of trouble. However, Ronnie is a woman on a mission, and she isn’t easily sidetracked. Her investigation has made her the target of some nefarious characters willing to do anything to silence her. As Joe and Ronnie struggle with their rapidly growing attraction, danger lurks much closer than they ever imagined.

It is abundantly clear that Joe is smitten by Ronnie from the moment he sees her. I smiled as Joe is struck by Ronnie’s beauty and innocence. When Ronnie smiles at him for the first time, his reaction is particularly interesting. “An angel’s choir in heaven struck a chord in his veins as if they’d presented him with their most prized gift.” While Joe’s reaction seems a little over the top, I couldn’t help but chuckle as I witnessed Joe fall very hard for Ronnie. The Romantics is filled with amusing banter between Joe and Ronnie as they dance around their feelings for each other. However, I think Joe spends way too much time thinking about how “perfect” Ronnie is. I enjoyed watching Joe fall in love with Ronnie, but his musings over her perfection became much too frequent and lost their emotional impact.

I must admit that I was a little frustrated with the pace of The Romantics at the beginning. The story moved along very slowly, and I was seriously beginning to doubt whether Joe and Ronnie’s investigation would actually lead anywhere. My patience was certainly rewarded. When Joe and Ronnie make an important discovery, the pacing really picks up. The last half of the book is very intense and had me on the edge of my seat wondering how the action would all play out.

Some questions remain unanswered at the conclusion of The Romantics, but the ending is still very satisfying. I do think one of the last scenes between Joe and Ronnie was a bit uncomfortable. They have a very emotionally intimate moment that should have occurred in private, but was witnessed by a small group of people. I was unable to enjoy the romance of their moment because I kept thinking about the other people in the room. After everything that Joe and Ronnie have been through, I really think they deserved a moment alone.

Despite my issues, I think The Romantics is a good book. Joe and Ronnie have great chemistry, and the last half of their tale is loaded with suspense. Readers who like a tough hero whose heart melts at the sight of his heroine should check out The Romantics today.

Twin brothers, Colton and North, have always loved little Eva. She’s their rock in life, the one pure thing in their otherwise dark existence. Their abusive father ran out on the family years ago and their mother suffers from a serious addiction. They never look at Eva with desire…until they spend a week alone with her in the city.

Everything changes when Eva and the cowboys realize just how deep their love for each other runs. Once their passion is unleashed, it’s impossible to contain. But can their unorthodox relationship last? Will sex ruin the friendship of a lifetime?

Eva Ford has known Colton and his twin brother North McReed her whole life. Neighbors in the small farming town it was impossible not to grow up in each other’s pockets. Colt and North were worse than overbearing pseudo-brothers, they were like massive watch dogs, attentive and seriously over-protective. When Eva enters two cows into a competition with the chance to win fifteen hundred dollars she sees it as her ticket to a weeks freedom in the big city. When Colt and North find out, though, they’re determined not to let her out of their sights. Eva’s big adventure begins.

This novel is a strongly character and plot motivated story. While the sex scenes are intense and erotic I was really impressed by the depth shown in the three main characters, Eva, North and Colt. The author spent a good amount of time introducing these three, explaining their situation and setting the scene. I was totally hooked on Eva’s bid for freedom and the controversial home life of North and Colton. By the time they became intimate I was seriously invested in them all and eagerly turning the pages.

At times I felt Eva was an incredibly sheltered twenty two year old. Although Colt and North were certainly over-protective and along with her parents culpable of sheltering her, I still thought Eva acted extremely young (maybe too much so) for her age. This grated me with some of her actions, like getting involved with the first cowboy she came across, being dazzled and totally excited simply by being taken out to dinner and not expecting there to be consequences, and finally running away in tears at a climactic moment all made her seem quite young and innocent. The fact this was miraculously shed the instant she became intimate with the twins seemed a little too unbelievable considering her past actions. While I wanted to roll my eyes at Eva a number of times she was still very sweet and an interesting character.

The romance between Eva and the twins was a slow, wonderful progression. Readers looking for a quick-moving, steaming hot sexy book might find themselves a little let down. But I prefer to read stories like this, where the characters and plot are more in-depth, even when the romance moves at a slower pace. Some of the speech is a little flowery for my personal tastes (“given him the gift of her virginity… a prize above all others…”) but overall I thought this was a sensual, character-rich cowboy romance novel. I’d recommend this for readers who like a bit of spice in their romances, threesomes or strong cowboy novels.

Dive into fourteen tales of non-themed horror, with short stories and dark poems by some of the best horror writers in the world, including the master himself, Graham Masterton.

Allow the very first instalment of Tales From the Lake to transport you to lakeside terror in Lover, Come Back to Me, Lady of Lost Lake, and Game On; journey to the basement of your local pet store in Dead Pull and your neighbourhood pub in O’Halloran’s; visit the apocalypse in Devil’s Night; travel to Africa in Witch-Compass and The Reunion; spend time with the talking dolls in Don’t Look at Me; experience drug addiction from close up in Junksick; and climb a ladder to the heavens in Perrollo’s Ladder.

Tales From the Lake Vol.1 includes the winning stories from the 2013 Tales From the Lake Horror Writing Competition: a nautical tale in Jenn Loring’s The Art of Wrecking; a bizarre story of strange addictions in J. Daniel Stone’s Alternative Muses; and a cult horror story in the jungles of South America in William Ritchey’s Las Maquinas.

Perfectly ordinary days only remain so for as long as nothing unexpected happens. Unfortunately for the characters in the first volume of Tales From the Lake, extraordinary days far outnumber the run-of-the-mill ones.

Placing “Lover, Come Back to Me” first in line was an excellent decision. Alan’s reluctant fishing trip with his girlfriend, Jan, quickly wanders into some strange territory when she notices something weird happening as they wait for fish to nibble on their lines. Strong pacing and a few twists that I never saw coming kept me glued to the page until the end.

All of the stories in this collection have sharp, interesting premises, but some of them would have benefitted from more time to be fully developed before being released. For example, “O’Halloran’s” follows the bizarre journey of a man who has just dropped his girlfriend off at the hospital for an abortion. I had trouble following what happens next, though, and was a little puzzled by how certain events were meant to tie together.

Anyone who picks up this anthology should read “Don’t Look at Me” first. Imagine spending years sitting alone in a neglected corner of a garden shop as a conscious, intelligent garden gnome who can’t do anything to change his circumstances. It’s a boring, lonely, and depressing existence until everything changes in an instant. I loved the wry perspective of this narrator and would be quite interested in reading a sequel to his adventures.

“The Fine Art of Wrecking” is another example of a fascinating premise that never quite ties all of its clues together. Christopher grew up in a small, poor, isolated town that keeps itself going through a peculiar arrangement they’ve made with an incredibly powerful being. I quickly found myself immersed in the tough decisions Christopher and his neighbors have made in order to survive, but it would have been easier to understand the climax of this piece had more information about their arrangement been provided. A few other short stories were similarly a little sparse on important details.

This is an intriguing collection of horror and science fiction tales. From what I understand, there is a distinct possibility that a sequel is in the works. I, for one, am looking forward to reading more from any author lucky enough to be included in this anthology.

Tales from the Lake Vol. 1 has piqued my curiosity. This book is something I’d recommend to anyone who likes their science fiction dark and full of chilling twists.

With his hard partying, playboy reputation jeopardizing a fifty million dollar investment deal, Duke realizes an engagement with the hot but oh-so-proper librarian could be just the thing to repair his reputation. As the unlikely match of librarian and tech entrepreneur set out to convince the world—and the internet—that their love is real, something unexpected happens: they start falling for each other. But Jane is secretly writing a historical romance novel that could expose their carefully constructed romance…unless two perfect strangers are content to be perfectly scandalous together.

Social media could ruin Jane Sparks, but instead it sets in motion her hot romance with a tech savvy bad boy.

Reading this novella, I was pretty much like Jane Sparks – I instantly fell for the tech entrepreneur Duke Austen. He’s super smart and hot and he knows it. He could easily come off as arrogant or too full of himself, but Rodale gives him just enough of his boyish charm and a tinge of insecurity that make him a very likeable person. She achieves something similar with Jane, who is a loveable control freak librarian. Or she used to be until she met Duke and kissed him at a wicked party in the library.

I loved how Rodale truly makes this a modern, Instagrammed, Twittered, and Facebooked romance; an affair that is at first invented in order for Duke and Jane to both reach their goals, but it then quickly develops into something deeper and unpredictable. The characters are all well-rounded, with the exception of Jane’s ex, I thought. What bothered me is that Jane is unwisely writing a historical romance using Duke and other people from her life for inspiration. That would’ve worked, hadn’t she copied the characters almost to the last detail. That makes it a bit unrealistic.

Another thing to bear in mind: this novella is part of a series and it therefore ends with a cliffhanger.

Rich kid playboy Logan Sabourin has long been in love with his best friend. He’s learned to keep his game face on and smile, despite wanting to be Ryan Mora’s submissive in the worst way. He can’t be with Ryan the way he wishes, so when Ryan’s birthday rolls around, Logan buys his friend a fantasy. A submissive for the night.

Ryan Mora agrees to the elaborate gift his best friend gives him, only if Logan joins in. Lucky for them, his one night submissive, Cassidy James, is all for it. What started as Logan and Ryan sharing Cassidy turns into something deeper as a whipping scene reveals Logan’s submissive side. Soon Ryan is entertaining the prospect of having more with both men. But when morning comes, and Cassidy and Logan are nowhere to be found, it’s up to Ryan to turn their one night fantasy into reality.

Logan Sabourin didn’t tell his best friend Ryan what he had planned. It was a surprise for his birthday and as much as it pained Logan to not be able to give his friend what Logan himself wanted, he could damn well make sure Ryan got something special for his birthday present. So Logan reached out to a secretive company that brought likeminded people together, and Cassidy came into their orbit. Logan might crave Ryan’s touch, but he wasn’t prepared to cross that line and possibly ruin the relationship with his only best friend in the world. Until Ryan insists and Logan’s resolve crumbles.

This is an intense read, highly erotic and probably not for every readers tastes. The relationship between Logan and Ryan is strong, and the connection with Cassidy despite the short time is also very strong. There are a few scenes that might be triggers for some readers, spanking (and lashing using a belt) and bondage. Personally, I found them tastefully written and enticing, but they aren’t tame and might not suit other readers. I really enjoyed the bond between the three men and even though Logan’s secret from Ryan was a little unrealistic (who can hide such a thing for years from someone they’re so close to otherwise?) it certainly progressed the story and added some delicious conflict to the scenes. I also really appreciated how Logan wasn’t some weak, spineless submissive. He’s a strong man and a complex character, and one who simply wants to submit to one Dominant, not be a “traditional” submissive. This added complexity really enriched the story for me and I found myself utterly captivated by the three men and their blossoming relationship.

All three characters are deep, complex and multi-layered. Best of all, the plot connecting them isn’t thin, but richly woven. For a short story, I felt this packed one hell of a punch. Deeply erotic, sexily kinky and with a plot of personal conflict, this is something I can strongly recommend to many of my friends and plan to do so. I’ve not heard of the author before but on the strength of this single story alone I totally plan to search out the rest of her works. If you like your kinky stories male dominated and complicated, this could well be a good one for you. Recommended.

California Thyme delves deeply into how past disappointments and hurt can shape us, but also shows the reader how to overcome the fear and take a risk again.

The most important message in California Thyme, for me at least, is that a loving family can give us a firm basis for a happy life, and when we don’t get to experience that as children, the hurt follows us long into adulthood. It takes a special sort of love to help us overcome the barriers that we set up. This is exactly what James does for Mandy in Dawes’s romance.

I think how Lola and Dana’s shadows follow Mandy everywhere is something that the novel really excels in showing. Perhaps even too much, as Mandy’s indecision towards the end gets slightly cumbersome. She is hurting and insecure, but maybe obsessing a little bit too much about her parents and the way they failed her. James brings his own share of baggage to the first meeting with Mandy at Costanoa Grill. His portrayal seems more and more convincing as we get to glimpse details from his past.

I wished for more immediacy in the descriptions of the fast paced film world. I feel there was a lot of talk about how intense and wild Hollywood was, but I got to see little of that in the descriptions of the film shootings. Even with the sabotage subplot there was no real suspense or mystery, and the discovery of the perpetrator was no real surprise to me.

While the scenes between James and Mandy were sweet and told us much about them as individual characters, I never really felt any chemistry between them. Despite the ‘should they or shouldn’t they’ atmosphere throughout their romance, I didn’t feel any tension nor any physical attraction. Perhaps they should’ve both been a bit more active in the budding relationship and not take everything so passively; I think that would have helped make them seem more involved and ‘passionate’.

This is a sweet romance that puts a lot of emphasis on family values, honesty and loyalty. It makes true love sound like something everyone can gain, if only they’re willing to take that risk.

Every parent dreams of giving his or her children a better life. Henry Wakefield is convinced he has what it takes to pull his family out of poverty…at any cost.

I was impressed by how much detail Mr. Pearce packed into this story. His descriptions of English life in the early 1800s were so extensive that I felt like I was walking alongside the characters as they struggled to survive. My favourite passages discussed how grimly the weakest members of their society were treated by anyone who thought they could get away with it. They weren’t always easy scenes to digest, but they were so well written that I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the page.

There wasn’t a great deal of character development in this book. The personalities of both the main and supporting characters relied heavily on the use of certain stereotypes about gender, social class, and religion. There were several scenes that would have been much more effective if I could have better understood why these characters behaved the way they did or what prevented them from learning from their previous experiences.

With that being said, this is a fascinating glimpse into the dark side of human nature. It’s easy to point out the faults of others, but it’s far more difficult to be on the other side of that judgement. This tale worked best when it showed just how easy it is to believe that you’re smarter and more resilient than every other person who has been hobbled by the same temptation before.

Reading A Weaver’s Web made me feel as though I’d travelled back in time 200 years. This is a good choice for anyone in the mood for a richly detailed historical novel.

Justice is a noble concept, but some criminals are so good that never have to worry about getting caught. Or do they?

Between taking advantage of people who had every reason to trust him and blaming everyone but himself for the bad decisions that lead him to robbery in the first place, Perry is the kind of protagonist that I love to hate. His intelligence and resourcefulness aren’t quite enough to make up for his many character defects, but they do make his journey even more interesting by providing glimmers of the person he could have been if he’d made different choices.

The foreshadowing in this story was a little too strong. I don’t mind having a good idea of what might happen ahead of time, but in this particular case the horror elements would have been even scarier had there been fewer clues about what was awaiting Perry around the next plot twist.

I’ve often wondered what antiques would say if they could speak. There’s something slightly eerie about a household object being passed down from one person to the next for many generations, and the mask in this book is no exception to that rule. This became even more true as Perry’s reactions to the things he hears, sees, and smells intensify. Thinking about the worst case scenario is scarier to me than having it spelled out plainly, and there was plenty of anticipation to be found as this plot built up.

Thief of Souls reads like a classic horror tale. There is a lot of creepy stuff between these pages for those of us who are fans of this genre!

Unenthusiastic, Carlin is in a mood when she gets back from her coffee run but is determined to make the best of it and help out Thatcher Banks. A bunch of emails follow and Carlin gets a good mental image of Thatcher. Stodgy, mid-fifties and possibly English to boot. The reality is mind-blowingly different to anything she’d previously believed.

This is a short and fun story based on light-hearted interactions, sexy innuendo and incorrect personal assumptions. I enjoyed the email and texts that were exchanged between Carlin and Thatcher, who both take their work very seriously. The romance quickly heats up between them and is sexy and all in good fun.

The pace of this story is fast. Thatcher and Carlin were interesting characters, but the short length of the story meant I didn’t get to know them as well as I would have hoped. Also, their romance happened very quickly. While it was believable, I couldn’t help but feel it was a “happy for now” sort of situation. Carlin thought she was falling in love, but that stretched my credulity a bit much when they’d known each other for such a short time and Thatcher left so abruptly. While there is definitely a happy ending, it felt a little forced to me. I wonder if more traditional romance readers who want a solid basis for their heroine and hero and all the trappings of Happily Ever After might feel the depth of the romance a little lacking here. If there had been another chapter or two in the middle, fleshing out their romance and coming back together that would have made the wrap up in the ending a lot more believable for me.

That said, for readers wanting a quick, smooth romance “on the go” this ticks many of my boxes. I enjoy the workplace romance style of story. Carlin and Thatcher are modern and interesting people and the sexy scene between them is smoking hot and very satisfying. As a reader I felt I could really sympathize with Carlin and loved the spot of jealousy she exhibited without going over the top. I enjoyed this story and feel many readers should too. A quick, fun, lighthearted read.

She discards a few selections and sorts through the bottom of the kit for my “younger face,” then spends the next ten minutes fixing me up.

After a quick glance in the mirror, I sigh and lean back in my chair. “You did your best, but it’s no use. We’d need an entire crate of concealer to get rid of the circles under my eyes. Hopefully, the new client will think an exhausted attorney is a good attorney because it means she’s working hard. What do you think? How do I look?”

“Haggard.” Penny gently wipes away some of the excess makeup and touches up my cheeks with her blush brush.

“I’m hoping that’s a British word for lovely.”

Penny snorts. “It means you’re pushing yourself too hard and it shows. It’s those pro -bono cases you’re running on the side. They’re eating into the time people normally reserve for sleeping and basic body maintenance.”

My eyebrow lifts at Penny’s gentle rebuke. “I’m meeting a new client in a few minutes and this could be the case that cements my path to partnership. My father, my grandfather, my great–grandfather, and probably all my relatives back to the beginning of time were law firm partners before they were thirty–two. I can’t break the family tradition. I need to be cheerful and happy. I need to be motivated. I need the ‘Rah, rah! Go, team, go!’ speech we are forced to endure in our morning meetings.”

Penny studies me for a long moment. “Is that really what you want? Partnership at the age of thirty–two with all the burdens and responsibilities of running a law firm?”

“Of course that’s what I want.” I follow her out of the restroom. “It’s the next logical step. It’s what I’ve been working toward since I got my kindergarten report card. Nothing will make my parents happier or more proud than to have me carry on the family tradition.”

“Rah, rah. Go, team, go.” Penny adorns her monotone with a bland expression.

I go. But, for once, I’m not feeling the rah.
