After a catastrophic invasion of elementals from “the other side” kills his grandfather and leaves him crippled, Oliver Muncing vows to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and dedicates his life to investigating other-worldly phenomena.

The problem with piercing the veil and connecting with the spirit world is that not all supernatural beings have good intentions, as Oliver is about to find out.

Imagine trying to prevent others from doing something they don’t realize is extremely hazardous. Most of the people in Oliver’s world don’t realize that seeking out the spirit world is fraught with danger until they’ve invited something into their homes they can’t control. Oliver’s responses to these emergencies aren’t always graceful, but seeing him leap to action to save strangers made me wish his adventures would never end. The first chapter in particular was so intense that I couldn’t imagine where the author intended to take the plot once that scene ended. It was rewarding to see how quickly Oliver leaps from one case to the next as well as how he handles the elementals he meets who are not necessarily friendly beings.

This is a fast-paced, plot-centered novel that is far more concerned with how Oliver relates to the elementals than his personal development. While I was able to intuit a thought-provoking explanation for Oliver’s sometimes obsessive habits it would have been nice to have my theory clearly confirmed or disproven at some point. Had the author included a few additional scenes to explore and further develop Oliver’s idiosyncrasies I would have easily given this tale a Best Book rating.

The foreshadowing, atmosphere, and pacing were absolutely perfect for the sci-fi/fantasy and horror genres. Mr. Paulits knows exactly how to slowly build tension through the addition of small detail that in any other type of story could easily be brushed off as mere coincidence. I had not heard of this author before reading Oliver Muncing, Exorcist, but now that I’ve been introduced to him I can’t wait to read his back list.

If you love supernatural horror I highly recommend checking out Oliver, Muncing, Exorcist. It’s spooky atmosphere and diverse cast of otherworldly beings is an excellent tonic for anyone in the mood to be frightened.

Clyde has worked for Mr. Wilkshire for a very long time. Life is comfortable in his keeper’s chateau—until Mr. Wilkshire is attacked. Clyde goes into hiding and emerges to find his only friend dead.

Brokenhearted and clueless how to bring Mr. Wilkshire’s killer to justice, Clyde accepts the help of a unique group of friends, including Flam the Mouflon treasure hunter and Nevele the royal stitcher. Throughout their adventure, Clyde learns he isn’t alone in this world with his magical ability: there are others like him called fabrick weavers, and for all it is both a special gift and a curse. His gift is to ease the conscience of anyone who makes a confession to him, but the curse is that the person’s luck will be reduced in proportion to the severity of the offense.

Having left his pampered life behind to set things right, Clyde joins his new friends traveling into the razed city of Geyser, into the labyrinthine world beneath, and to the palace beyond. Along the way, the group deals with an unrelenting maniac pursuer, a corrupt king, a band of pirates, a small army of guardsmen, and just a few million dog-sized bugs—all while hopefully managing to avoid jinxing their own members.

Clyde is an interesting creation. He needs no food or sleep, he can’t love anyone or he forgets them, and he’s spent his life hidden away. He can listen to your troubles and make you feel better, but he also gives you bad luck. He has no idea why would anyone sweep into the yard and kill the man who was raising him. And why did he need to hide away for three weeks?

This is a unique story, I’m impressed. I read a lot of fantasy/science fiction books and some plots seem to dribble together. This one stands alone and stands proud. Mr. Post has created a world that is different but his characters are the ones that are unique. You need to open your mind wide to get into this story and really appreciate it.

Pirates and their associates are the ones who have killed his master. He’s never been outside the walls of their compound, so how’s he going to survive? He finds some hope when he finds this Mouflon pilfering anything of value in the house and around the property. He’s huge, has horns, and also has a big appetite. By accident, he agrees to help Clyde, and then he’s stuck. He has to honor his word.

As they travel across the destroyed world, they meet other interesting creatures: Mice that can become one entity and travel as person, and a stitcher who can weave her own being into tools like twine or rope to help with Clyde’s quest. All Clyde wants to do is find the man who killed his master, but that changes as he travels.

This story is well written, full of tension, and full of friendship built from nothing but strangers working together. Mr. Post has created a good team. This imagined world has a lot of depth, a lot of danger, and death is common. It makes a great adventure. The part that really pleases me, as a reader, is that there has to be a sequel. Too many questions are still unanswered. And there’s another character in the shadows that must be going to run across Clyde sooner or later. I’m more than willing to go on another wild ride with Clyde!

I really enjoyed this read. Why not share this unique world with your young adult reader? (I won’t tell if you read it, too.)

Kyrna and she connect on a sexual level immediately and as they bond, reveal some things about each other that take the relationship deeper. As Amanda shares her darkest secret with Kyrna, she reveals more about herself than she ever intended. Dealing with the after effects of rape in a novel is tough. It is something that can trigger both the writer and the reader into remembering things best left in the past. Kyrna gets past her defenses but the walls are thrown up again when she gets a little too adventurous in her therapy efforts. Bringing a man into their lovemaking sets Amanda off, even after declarations of love. Will they resolve their differences? Will Amanda admit she could maybe be involved with Michael, Kyrna’s best friend, and share her?

The tension in the book was good, I had an issue with the snark at the onset of the novel. I want to see what sets a character off, not read about it in a summed up narrative. It is more real for me that way. The immediate chemistry was fine, but in a sleazy catty way that left me a little cold at the start. I want to have an emotional connection to the character first, not a boink fest.

The final blow, I think was the introduction of BDSM to the sex scenes without a necessary conversation with Amanda. Let me be clear. You need to know what you are getting into before you go into a scene, especially when you are dealing with a rape victim. The author did try to capture this, but there was more opportunity to show a gradual trust building and her acquiescence. One other note; BDSM is great. I love toys and the things people do that go bump (bump, bump) in the night.

Overall, I liked the conflict caused by Amanda’s necessary aloofness, but wanted a little more emotional connection to the character, both in the bedroom and out of it. Victims of sexual violence can have intimacy issues. It is a subject I am unfortunately very familiar with. I wanted a connection to the character, a realistic sexual relationship with Michael and Kyrna and a real feeling of love.  However, thankfully the book wrapped up with another narrative at the end just as the three came (giggle) to a satisfactory conclusion.

Fun, frivolous and with lots of naughty banter, this is a fabulous “naughty nooner”. Despite the short length there’s a delicious buildup of sexual tension that reaches a lovely culmination. I’m not sure how restricted by the word limit the author was, but I would have loved it if there’s been a bit more length to the heat between Mason and Cherie. While the interlude between them didn’t feel rushed, I was a bit sad that it wasn’t balanced (one partner got off while the other had to wait). This had me feeling like the story was left a bit hanging, waiting for the rest to occur, but was up to my imagination in the end. Also the question of whether this was a “happy for now” or “happy ending” was also left open, which doesn’t bother me, but might be unsatisfying for other readers.

Well written and with interesting characters, I enjoyed this short story and found it a good taste of the author’s style and voice. I’d certainly be interested in reading more by her.

Moira Frazer is betrothed to a man who is old enough to be her father, but it’s her duty to her clan to marry him, and she’s determined to see this through…until she meets Gahan Sutherland.

Gahan knows this match is designed to start a feud between the clans, which is why he decides to stop the wedding. But when Moira awakens a passion within him that he never knew existed, he realizes that the outcome of this perilous situation will determine the future of his own happiness.

As trust and honor clash with forbidden attraction, manipulations, rivalries, and schemes will threaten to blow the Highlands sky high…

The obstacles are mind-boggling—mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual—that Gahan Sutherland and Moira Fraser must overcome to share a love that feels so right but is deemed to be so wrong. These two ‘wrong-side of the blanket’ characters come from very different upbringings but there is an immediate connection the first time they meet. Good reading indeed!

What a Highlander will do to get the woman he loves and craves sets a string of events in motion that takes the reader to the cold north in Scotland where greed and the struggles for power fuel manipulations that chill the blood at times. In late fifteenth century Scotland, the old Scottish ways and the oppressive new English rule rubbed abrasively together creating a breeding ground for feuds.

Honor and duty to the clan are paramount in the culture. Gahan Sutherland stands proud with his father and his brother Norris as they protect what is theirs. He is compelling—strong, handsome, and intelligent. His retainers follow him with pride and unfaltering allegiance. When he and Moira Fraser meet another facet of his personality comes alive. One can almost sense the pheromones fill the air around these two.

Gahan’s mother was Lytge Sutherland’s true love though not his wife, but by Highlander custom Lytge claims Gahan as his own just like he claims Norris, the son of his wife. Lytge understands love and can relate to Gahan’s actions, but he holds his son to duty to the clan. Yet he looks the other way long enough to let nature take its course with Gahan and Moira. When push comes to shove, the Sutherlands stand together against all odds.

The Fraser clan, ruled by Bari Fraser, is entirely different. A type of insanity seems more evident in Fraser after the loss of his beloved sister Sandra. He had always used and abused his half-sister Moira; but when he insists she marry a man old enough to be her grandfather, she is horrified. She’d learned to endure the pain he inflicted on her and considered refusing until he threatens reprisal on the clan—the people she loves and feels duty bound to protect—if she doesn’t comply.

She bows to his order that she marry the crafty, crude, ugly old Achaius Matherson. Gahan Sutherland is at the wedding and recognizes Fraser intent to form an alliance with Matherson then start a feud with the Sutherlands because of what had happened to Sandra. Although Gahan knows Fraser is the enemy, he is drawn to Moira and longs to snatch her away and make her his own. In a secluded place, he waits for Moira and tells her not to marry then gives her a kiss that sends sweet ripples all through her like nothing she’d ever felt before. His power both inside and out fascinate her. She wants him, but tells him he should not teach her how to kiss like that when she must wed another.

Since I read some of Mary Wine’s other Highlander stories, I recognized some of the secondary characters and enjoyed catching up with what had transpired in their lives such as Saer MacLeod and Daphne who play important roles in Gahan and Moira’s story. Another character I enjoyed is Cam. He stands steadfast by Gahan. Cam is Gahan’s half-brother, the son of his mother. He is Gahan’s bodyguard whether Gahan wants a bodyguard or not—making private matters not too private at times.

How to Handle a Highlander is chock full of evil manipulation, breathtaking love scenes, events at court with the young English king, making and breaking of alliances, and so much more. It is a gripping tales of a turbulent time in the history of Scotland. BUT most of all, it is an incredible love story of two strong characters, though bound by duty and honor; find a way to reach their happy-ever-after.

Mary Wine weaves a tapestry of a tale with adrenaline-pumping action, political manipulation, sweet and spicy love scenes, clan culture, a touch of humor, and a twist and turn here and there that makes one say, “Really!”

Super satisfying romance reading!

Since her divorce two years before, Kelsie Collins has been determined to guard her heart and steer clear of seemingly ‘perfect’ men. An easy task considering the kind of men her matchmaking mother and her best friend, Nanci, keeps setting her up with. She allows them to set her up, knowing their hearts are in the right place and that there is no risk of her letting any man close enough to hurt her again. Her growing experience in ways to slip out of those ‘dates from hell’ prompts her to start writing a bad date survival guide. One aptly titled – OPERATION: DATE ESCAPE. And it’s during one of those escapes that sexier than sin firefighter Cole Maxwell comes to her rescue.

Cole isn’t sure what to think when the sexy redhead he’s just ‘rescued’ from a bad date informs him that he’s too ‘perfect’ to date. That’s a first. He’s had relationships end because the women couldn’t handle the risks that go along with his chosen profession, but never because he’s too perfect.

When his crew gets called out to rescue someone who is stuck in a tree, Cole finds himself once again coming to Kelsie’s rescue. This time he’s not about to let her get away without agreeing to give him a chance, even holding her high heels hostage to make it happen. She finally gives in and things heat up between them like a 3-alarm fire. But there’s more than passion between them and Cole sets out to prove to Kelsie that he’s nowhere near ‘perfect’, but he is the ‘perfect’ man for her. Can he get past the wall she’s built up around her heart? Or will he end up being just another chapter in her book of men she ran from?

Operation: Date Escape is a fun read for any time you just want to escape and smile. Kelsie is a nice girl who just wishes her mom would stop setting her up with any man she meets. She’s divorced and determined to never risk her heart again, but can’t seem to say no to the dozens of blind dates she keeps having with unacceptable men.

Hence her “date escapes”. She keeps a notebook of them … ways to get out of a bad date without hurting the feelings of the guy she’s with. Okay, so maybe climbing out the window of the bathroom of a strip joint isn’t very subtle, but she did get to see that hot fireman again. Too bad he’s perfect. She has a real problem with perfect men … her ex-husband was one and look how that turned out. The author definitely showed some creativity with her date escapes and I wouldn’t mind reading the book Kelsie was writing. I bet it would be a hoot.

I have to say I loved Cole. He really was perfect. I don’t think he had one flaw. Handsome, smart, funny, patient, heroic, determined … in fact, I think the only time I thought he might actually be human was at the very end. As much as I loved him, though, I really wish he’d have had something wrong with him to make him more real.

I utterly adored Nanci, Kelsie’s best friend. She was smart-assed, straight talking and a hoot and I was tickled pink she hooked up (pretty much literally — Nanci’s all about sex all the time) with Cole’s buddy, Joe. They were quite possibly the best part of the book and made me laugh more than once. They were involved with Cole and Kelsie without being overtly manipulative, had some awesome one liners and just made me grin every time they showed up on the page. I hope they stick it out to their own HEA because, while they weren’t perfect, they sure were perfect together.

I wanted to smack Kelsie’s mom. I didn’t find her particularly endearing … I think I was supposed to, but between telling her daughter she needed a boob job, and shoving men at her all the time, refusing to listen to Kelsie, she just grated on me. I know moms aren’t perfect, but I kept thinking she’d grow and change a bit. And I really, really wanted Kelsie to tell her off.

The author is quite skilled with words. I have no complaints with the mechanics of the story. Her descriptions were perfect, her dialog real and believable, the editing was clean. She’s clearly amazingly talented and while I didn’t love the story (mostly because I spent much of the time wishing Kelsie would grow a spine), I’d absolutely pick up another book by her. Operation: Date Escape had its shining moments — and it’s a book I’d recommend to folks looking for a light, funny, sweet and romantic read.

Peaceful Valley is about to become a slaughterhouse!

For the first time ever, Samhain Publishing will serialize a terrifying original novel, Savage Species, in five installments, with new installments coming every two weeks.

The construction of the Peaceful Valley Nature Preserve, a sprawling, isolated state park, has stirred an evil that has lain dormant for nearly a century, and all the men, women and children unlucky enough to be attending the grand opening are about to encounter the most horrific creatures to ever walk the earth.

Part Three: Dark Zone

Charly, Sam, Jesse and the others must do battle with the Children in the labyrinthine subterranean world that the creatures call home. But the situation grows bleaker when many of the survivors are captured and borne deeper into the lightless caverns…where a new and even more horrific species awaits.

The mystery continues to deepens in this arresting installment in the Savage Species series. Many of the survivors are confined to the dark caverns with the hideous man-eating monsters lurking near.

This series can be correlated with a roller coaster ride. Part one starts out as a slow incline, your heart rate picks up in speed due to the unknown fears that’s about to take place. Quickly, in part two you are taken to the peak of horror as you reach the highest point of the ride. Part three would be the decline into the lower part of the ride when your heart rate settles but only for a brief second. In part three the characters are all confined in the underground tunnel with no known way out… not that they even know if they’ll live to see the exit. The repulsive monsters are still on attack and their killing all that they come in contact with. Now the battles are up close and with limited lighting and weapons the monsters have the advantage.

The author uses their confinement in the tunnel to display the characters’ stories before the monsters invaded their lives. Each character seems to have a moment of flashbacks from their past. I’m not really sure how the flashbacks tie in with the plot but I’m sure it will be revealed soon. Just as with the voices in part two, it hadn’t been revealed yet but I think I have an idea what the author is leading up to. In the caves, not only are they fighting monsters but there are also a few personal heated confrontations between Charly and Eric, and also between Eric and Sam.

In part three, the author does reveal the legend of The Children. Don’t fret, Janz has a plot that is captivated and continues to pull it’s reader along in suspense. A new terror is introduced with the Night Flyers and they do just that…fly. A great ploy to insure the reader will advance to read part four. The author does a fantastic job in the detailed description of the action scenes and he has a vivid creative imagination that combines style and suspense.

This installment wasn’t my favorite of the three, however it did answer some questions and possibly reveals a new terror.

The Savage Species series continues to be a chilling suspenseful tale perfect for horror fans, but you might want to sleep with a nightlight available after reading.

Autumn can be a desolate season. For Dorothy, after losing her husband, the autumn of her life stretches before her lonely and uncertain. But a change, a new hobby, and new friends prove this new season to be bountiful with blessings.

How old is too old to reinvent your life?

Grief can turn an active, 60-year-old woman into someone who acts decades older than her true age. If Dorothy lived in a fairy tale she’d make a wish or find a magical amulet and suddenly feel like her old self, but in real life she has to figure out how to feel better on her own. I was intrigued by her gradual transformation and her occasional tumbles into old thought patterns. The path to recovery is rarely a straightforward one, and it was nice to see a character take two steps forward and one step back as she struggles to find her way out of the fog of grief.

As much as I was rooting for her to find lasting happiness, the change in Dorothy’s habits happens so rapidly that it was a little difficult for me to believe it would be a longterm part of her daily life. When she ignores some troubling information that pops up later on in the plot it had even more trouble believing everything would work out for the best for her. It seems out of character for someone who worries as much as she does earlier on in the plot to ignore the signs that everything might not be as it seems in her world.

Dorothy’s strong relationship with her adult children and grandchildren gives me hope for her future. Ms. Waysman reveals the unbreakable bond between them with such subtle turns of phrases that I felt as if I was eavesdropping onto real conversations. The ending didn’t answer all of my questions, but it was so realistic and heartwarming that it works wonderfully for this tale.

I smiled my way through Autumn Blessing. This warm, gentle story is like a cup of hot tea on a chilly afternoon, and I’d recommend it to anyone who needs to read something to brighten their day.

They must outwit Harry’s ex-wife, Sybilla, and her new cohort, Blaze, both of whom are vicious werewolves bent on destroying all books, all libraries, and especially all dogs and dog shifters.

While Recovered is the third in The Shapeshifters’ Library series, it reads just fine as a stand-alone. Each book in the series focuses on a different problem and has a different set of main characters. The books are linked and there are continuing characters, but Bliss, for instance, was a minor character in the first novel and a slightly more important character in the second, but Recovered is her shining moment and shine she does. Bliss is a very well-developed, wonderful heroine, demonstrating both strengths and weaknesses, standing up to the villains even when she is terrified, and in the end demonstrating all the qualities that most of us hope for in a heroine. I also liked Harry, who has lived all his life with werewolves who are vicious, power-hungry individuals, and who ridicule him because he is a half-breed who cannot be like them no matter how hard he tries. He learns, with help from Bliss, that he is a kind soul and in their travels he also learns that not all werewolves are like his parents and his wife. This novel is a coming-of-age story for Harry as well as for Bliss.

Lovers of fantasy, especially book lovers and dog lovers, are sure to be charmed by this unusual, action-packed novel. I can recommend it highly and I can also recommend the rest of the series. I was lucky enough to be able to read all three in order, and while that is certainly not necessary since each book is complete in and of itself, it was, for me at least, the way to go. Amber Polo is a gifted writer and it is a real pleasure to read such a fun and exciting fantasy novel.

Cherry Edmonds left her West Texas home ten years ago, planning never to return. Now she’s back to care for her dying father, and trying to avoid what drove her away so long ago; sinfully hot and sexy brothers Wesson and Remington Smith. Now she has to settle the estate, and try to get back to her own life, while trying to keep her heart from being shattered by leaving these two men again. She loves both, and can’t stand the thought of choosing one and hurting the other. She doesn’t realize that they are both in this for keeps, and are not looking for the normal relationship; they want Cherry to spend the rest of her life with both of them, together. Cherry thinks she will have a onetime fling with them, and move on, but she didn’t figure on the temptation these two hot cowboys offer for a happy ever after. Will she leave, shattering the hopes and dreams of three hearts, or will Cherry find the courage to accept what her two hot cowboys offer her…love and a future with both of them.

Double or Nothing is a hot and sweetly passionate tale of love revisited and dreams coming true. N.J. Walters has created a world of passion and romance, with hot cowboys and the woman who once ran away rather than hurt either of them by choosing. I like this world, and could not put this down, waiting to see what Cherry would decide. The dynamic between these three people is hot and very believable, and I really liked the way each of the men interacted with Cherry, showing both their similarities and their differences.

Cherry Edmonds is a strong woman, but she wasn’t as strong at eighteen, when she ran from Wes and Remy rather than hurt either of them by choosing only one. Now she is ten years wiser, and believes she can have one little taste before going back to her life away from West Texas. I enjoyed watching as the men slowly got past her defenses and convinced her that she should take a chance on the unconventional relationship with them.

Wesson and Remington smith (Wes and Remy) have waited ten long years for Cherry to come home, and they are determined not to let her get away again. Both men are handsome and sexy cowboys, but each has their own unique personality. I enjoyed the interplay and verbal sparring both men had with Cherry, and the different arguments they had to counter each of her protests. I also liked that they provided a united front, accepting Cherry as she is, asking only that she give them all a chance at happiness together.

Double or Nothing drew me right into the story from the first page, and took me to the edge of my seat a couple of times. There was laughter, some sniffling and lots of scorching hot bedroom antics to keep me enthralled until the final page. The characters are folks I’d like to meet again somewhere down the way, once they have had some time together to grow and build their unique family. I recommend this one for those who like hot cowboys and sexy ménage action.
