How far will a strong woman bend? Maybe past the point of rescue.

The Elect, Book 3

Years ago, former Special Ops officer Carter Owens made the biggest mistake of his life. He met the woman of his dreams—and didn’t fight to keep her. Now that he’s learned Jamie Wade is still alive, and that she bore him a son, Carter plans to protect his family at all costs. Right after he’s rescued them along with several other Elect members being held prisoner in a private hospital.

He isn’t prepared to find her battered, drugged-up, and half-starved. Whatever her captor wanted, the madman hadn’t gone after it humanely.

When Jamie awakens, she’s stunned to find herself free of the abuser who tried and failed to make her admit she’s a telepath. As a police detective, she is driven to join the investigation into the organization that held her and her son captive. But she’ll have to do it in secret, away from Carter’s too-watchful, overprotective eye.

Which isn’t going to happen anytime soon, because first she has to recover—and convince him that their out-of-control sexual chemistry isn’t a good enough reason to stay.

It’s always a mistake to let go of the person you love!

A long time ago Carter Owen was in love with Jamie Wade, head-over-heels in love, but life got in the way – it has a habit of doing that when you’re in the elite Special Ops. But years later, he’s found out that she’s borne him a son, not only that she’d been held prisoner and forced to take a drug that has made her telepathic like him. His instinct is to protect her, have her, claim her – for all of time.

Warrior doesn’t quite come under the heading paranormal, it’s more sci-fi/fantasy because it is about The Elect, the next race development in human evolution. People who have progressed from homo sapiens into a superior species. The fundamental idea for the story is clever, it appealed to me and certainly played on my mind about the possibility of this happening for real, and that’s one of the reasons I gave it four stars – excellent idea Ms Hunt.

The actual story itself does deliver a hot and angst ridden romance. There is plenty of sex, good, spicy sex that certainly heats up the ereader. The hero and heroine have all the right chemistry and the fact that they can communicate telepathically adds for some funny/sweet moments.

There is a simmering terrorist-type plot that bubbles along, plenty of secondary characters, lots of questions and – luckily – answers. I enjoyed the whole idea of ‘mating’ and Carter certainly has a delicious dominance about him.

If you fancy something a little different but still comes under the heading erotic romance then this might just be the book for you.

Excerpt
Once more dressed in jeans and her well-worn cowboy boots, with a jacket thrown on to ward off the chill evening air, Phoenix walked.

Against a backdrop of blue-green mountain peaks and the lightly wooded hillsides closer to the farm, the hens were settling in their coop, with only an occasional soft clucking.

Inside the boldly painted red barn, horses whickered in their stalls. She breathed deeply of the scents of horse and hay as she ambled through the dusty structure, then opened the side door and walked into the llama’s pasture.

The male immediately approached her and nuzzled her cheek as she slung her arm around him. “I love you too, Romeo.”

She closed her eyes and relaxed against the animal’s woolly neck. However, her relaxation ended abruptly when the animal stiffened and emitted a shrill cry.

Following the animal’s gaze, Phoenix saw CJ standing on the other side of the corral with his arms folded on the top board. “Will your llama spit in my face?”

“It’s alright, Romeo.” Phoenix patted the llama, then walked slowly toward the man who had occupied too much of her thoughts lately. “What brings you out this way?”

“You left the Governor’s presentation right after you talked to Mitch. I wanted to be sure you were okay.”

All the memories she had been trying to walk off slammed into Phoenix once more. “What is okay? I’m not sure I’ve ever been okay or ever will be. How can I find normal or happy when I don’t think I’ve experienced those things?”

“You come up your own version of what makes you happy.”

“A woman is dead because of me. How can I ever be happy knowing that?”

“Mitch said Swaggerty was waiting for Charlene. If it hadn’t been that night, he would have killed her another way.”

Phoenix let that statement sink in. One part of her brain knew that was true. So why did she cling to the blame for Charlene’s death? Maybe she was afraid to move forward.

Getting in the Mood: Outfitting the Writing Cave by Lissa Trevor –Guest Blog and giveaway

Leave a comment for a chance to win a digital copy of Spank Me, Mr. Darcy.

Am I the only one who thinks the Levenger’s catalog is akin to the big Sears Christmas wish book from many years ago?  I could sit and drool at all the pretty notebooks and pens for hours.  I mean let’s face it, even if you do most of your writing on a computer what writer wouldn’t want a spiffy leather bound portfolio and a funky fountain pen?  But I’m on a bit of a budget as I strive to put together what Virginia Wolfe called “a room of her own” so I can write fiction. Truthfully, it’s a corner of a room that I share with my husband but we’ve been married for seventeen years so I’ve had a lot of practice of ignoring him when I need to write.  So while it’s not technically a room of my own, it’s close enough.

The first thing equipping my author area is a desk.  It’s a corner unit that I picked up from IKEA.  The next is a comfy chair that I spent more than I wanted to on at Staples, but since my butt will be in it for long stretches of time, I figured it was worth it to be comfortable.  Then there is my laptop and collection of thumb drives.  I have a bunch of thumb drives because I’m paranoid that I’m going to lose one.  So my back up files have back up files.

That’s the bare minimum of my office space.  But it’s a little stark and sterile, even after I grab a tall glass of lemonade and a mug of tea.  I couldn’t decide if I wanted hot or cold.  Sometimes writing is like that too and I have to try both out before I’m satisfied.  I write erotica under my pen name Lissa Trevor and contemporary romance under Jamie K. Schmidt.  So I need to feed both sides of my muse.

Music helps. I hooked up Pandora radio and put on my headset, but my eyes kept straying to the blank wall.  I needed some inspiration.  Road trip time!  I got into my car and drove to AC Moore.  Michaels or Hobby Lobby would have worked too.  All three of them have some inexpensive matted pictures guaranteed to catch the eye and inspire creativity.  I picked up a few that made my imagination soar just looking at them.

On the way home, I made another stop at Staples because office supplies are my porn.  I really dig colored paperclips and post-it notes with pithy sayings on them.  Not to mention there are all sorts of things there to buy that you can put on your desk.  I’m particularly fond of the “WTF?” stamp and the automated button that when you press it says “NO!” in several voices.  There’s also one that says “BULLSHIT” too.  I have a use for all three of these things in my writing and daily life.  And the genius who decided that Staples should have a snack center by the registers should be given a promotion.  So loaded down with paper, pens, gummy worms – you know, the essentials, I returned home to finish up my writing place.

I was trying to think what else I would need to really pimp my office.  A bouquet of flowers would be nice – until they started to die.  Then that would throw the feng shui of the room right off.   Desk toys or figurines would add a little style, but also a lot of clutter.  I have a hard time with clutter.  For most of the week my dining room table is a horizontal filing cabinet.

I wanted something different.  Something that said this was uniquely my space.  A space for writing and productivity.  A friend of mine has a treadmill desk.  I really want to try that one day.  I’m afraid, though, that with my lack of coordination, I’d wind up hurting myself.

I decided I probably should stick with the plain Jane office for the moment until inspiration hits.  Maybe I’d make a vase with knitting needles in it or something crafty.  When it was word time, I put on the music and got my butt in the chair.  I was drinking my tea with a Twizzler straw (don’t judge), and staring at the pictures of Paris on the wall while tapping my purple gel pen.

All of a sudden, the cat launched herself onto the keyboard.  I picked her up and put her down.  She comes back, only this time, she wound around to the back of the laptop and stared at me over the screen.

This would be different.  Apparently, I have a writing buddy.

I ignored her until she started to gnaw on the corner of the laptop. Wheeling over a table, I put a fluffy towel on top, and sprinkled a little catnip to interest her.  So now I’m sugared up.  The cat is stoned and the blank page is a little less daunting.

What do you have in your writing cave?

Andrew Weston and Jill Walsh had to be the two most unlikely people to fall in love. When Jill’s first husband’s love for her simply fizzled and died, Jill knew she’d never trust that love could last again. After Andrew’s first love betrayed him in the most brutal way possible, he knew he might fall in love again someday, but there was no way he’d ever make himself vulnerable again by confessing those feelings if he did.

Fate had a different ending in mind for these two, though, and when Andrew discovers his love for Jill, he knows the only way to get her to stay with him forever is to offer her an iron clad penalty clause in a prenuptial agreement. He stays with her forever or he loses everything he owns. The millions he’s worked for, his property, his cars, everything. Now he just needs to hope that’s enough to hold onto Jill forever.

With a hero to die for and just a touch of suspense, Penalty Clause is a good addition to any romance reader’s library.

I can understand Jill’s reluctance to trust again after her husband’s adultery. And Andrew … no wonder he never spoke to his parents again! I can’t even imagine that kind of betrayal. Still, with the background between these two, I admit I found it somewhat difficult they couldn’t overcome their doubts and fears. They were friends first, after all.

I really did love Andrew… what a yummy hero! He was so sweet and thoughtful and sexy enough to take your breath away. I envied Jill from the start. The things he did for her up to and including the penalty clause surely should have proved where his heart was, but he just could not say those all important words.

Ms. Ryan has done a wonderful job creating three dimensional characters in a well-plotted book. I understand this is book two in a series, and while it was clear there was a story I’d missed, since we met some newly marrieds, I never had trouble following anything in this book. When characters are this strong and clear, I’ll keep reading even when the plot has blips. And I especially loved Andrew’s grandmother — what a hoot!

The author is exceptionally talented and the book editing was tight and clean. I enjoyed Penalty Clause even when I wanted to take Jill and Andrew and smack them upside their heads.  Really what that means is that I was completely invested in them and their HEA!  The plot was interesting (and had a surprising twist), the characters fabulous and the sex hot. I’m fully planning to go back and gobble up book one!

As sad as it was to see them struggling so much, I was mesmerized by the detailed pictures Mr. Peel painted in my mind about their personalities. It felt as if Anne and Jonathan were old, dear friends instead of characters in a story, and my impression of them is so strong I feel like I’d instantly recognize them if we magically met in person.

I couldn’t understand why Jonathan stopped communicating with Anne when she first pushed him away. Every marriage has its rough patches, but both spouses in this story respond to the overwhelming changes in their lives by doing everything other than asking for what they really need. Had Mr. Peel included at least one conversation between Anne and Jonathan in which they were honest about what they wanted I would have given this book a higher rating. Not everyone is emotionally healthy enough to listen to their spouse in this sort of situation, of course, but I never understood why neither person in this marriage was willing to take that first step and at least attempt to fix the situation for the sake of their son.

Kerra’s hauntingly beautiful descriptions of life as a mermaid made me wish her scenes would never end. I would be quite interested in reading a sequel from her point of view if it explored the deepest mystery in mermaid civilization.

The Maid of Trelanton is the sort of tale I’d recommend without hesitation to a friend who is completely unfamiliar with the fantasy genre. It is a solid introduction to magical realism that should not be missed, and I hope to hear more from these characters soon.

“Sasha was always on the outside looking in. Just once she wanted to be the person people looked at and envied.” Many readers could identify with this feeling and it isn’t uncommon, especially among those who are different for whatever reason, to want to belong. But hopefully there aren’t many who have been brutalized the way Sasha was. She has had to fend for herself and survive any way she could, living in absolute terror.

Janelle Lee has written an incredible story of abuse and neglect. Imagine being sold to a man at age eight so your mother could have a bottle of scotch. This is a harsh tale, which is why I rated it for ages 14+, but it is also a beautiful tale, a tale of what it means to be family, a tale of loss and then being found. It is not sugar-coated, and the ending promises hope without any platitudes that everything will be perfect. I thought that was very realistic and powerful.

The characters in the novel are drawn in depth. I really cared about Sasha from the very beginning. I wanted to fight for her, to denounce her teachers and principals who couldn’t see what was going on. I also cared about her father, and as things progressed, her step-mother and her half-sister. I feel that Lee creates a number of characters, even minor ones, that are believable and that the reader empathizes with. The pacing of the plot is excellent and I found that I was so caught up in Sasha’s story that I had to keep reading, finishing the book in one sitting.

Lee has tackled a difficult topic with grace and empathy. She draws her readers in so that we are able to understand not only Sasha’s plight but the plight of those around her. I highly recommend this book.

Private investigator Vanna Marbury arrives in Lexington to search for a stolen thoroughbred. She boards her daughter’s horse at Big Sky Stables and becomes curious about the mysterious black colt the owner keeps sequestered in the barn. Stable owner Braxton Hicks lives up to his name. He can truly be a pain with his grumpy demeanor and arrogant attitude.

To Brax, Vanna is nosey, over-bearing and too damned attractive, and he considers telling her to take her horse elsewhere. Especially after she tells him she is an investigative journalist. The last thing he needs is more headlines and a snoopy woman looking over his shoulder.

Despite their differences, Vanna is attracted to the dark, brooding horseman, and an unfamiliar jealousy stirs in Brax when he sees the way his brother Pete looks at Vanna.

Dark Horse features a female private investigator on the case of a missing colt that could be the “next big thing”, so she manages to integrate herself into what is predominantly a man’s world by posing as a reporter writing a story. Things heat up between herself and a stable owner while things simultaneously heat up on the case.

Jessie, Savannah’s daughter, is cute and so typical of most little girls her age with her obsession with horses that it made me think of my niece and picture her throughout most of the book. I really enjoyed Savannah. She refuses to allow Brax to intimidate her and gives it right back to him at every turn. She is also conflicted by her attraction to him due to her maternal duties (not that she views it as a duty) and is very believable in her reactions.

Braxton Hicks, or Brax, is a good looking but brash man who runs the horse stable where Savannah boards her daughter’s horse while she is in Lexington. He is surly and rude with a type A personality. He finds himself attracted to Savannah, but like her, he fights the attraction. We eventually learn the cause for his behavior which makes him easier to understand, but not necessarily any more endearing.

I wasn’t a fan of Brax. He was very abrasive in the beginning and not all that likable. By the end, he was a bit better but with a story of this length it doesn’t really allow enough time to redeem the hero when he comes off so unlikable in the beginning. I had a hard time connecting with him. His brother, Pete, was far more interesting to me.

It was very interesting to get a glimpse in to the world of horse racing in and around Lexington, Kentucky. Having grown up close enough to the area, you know that the Kentucky Derby is like the Olympics in the horse world. To see the lengths people go to in order to achieve status in that sport is fascinating and the danger is all too real. The way that the colt was disguised was ingenious and not something that ever would have occurred to me.

The ending is a nice way to wrap it up, but it also would have been nice to, perhaps, end it with getting to see the horse race. Throughout the story, we are told repeatedly how this horse might be the next big thing to hit the tracks, so it would have been neat to see that happen.

A great choice if you’re looking for a quick read on a lunch hour, something to read before bed or if you like books about horses.

Nordic Prince is a short, erotic male/male romance. The story flows nicely, the characters are quickly established and the sex scene is hot. I felt the writing could have been a little more polished but I think the author did a nice job of transporting me to a cruise liner, dropping me into Stephen’s head, and outlining the internal conflict he experiences after having sex with a man for the first time.

And there is a lot of conflict because Stephen had no idea he was gay and then suddenly he was 69ing with another bloke. The L word was used pretty quickly, but it does help the story move along.  A nice little read if you like male/male romance, fairly predictable, but perfectly satisfying.

Qualities of a Good Romance Heroine—or, Have I Got a Girl For You… by Christine Feldman

What is it that makes for a great heroine in a romance novel? Is it virtue? Charm? Measurements that seldom exist outside of an episode of Baywatch?

Well, there are plenty of entertaining heroines who have all that and more, but I find that I’m usually drawn to the ones that are less than perfect, both inside and out. Kind of like—*coughs discreetly*—me. Less Mother Teresa trapped in the body of Scarlett Johansson and more, say… Bridget Jones.

Judging by the popularity of the original film, lots of people fell in love with and rooted for Bridget. Was Bridget flawed? Absolutely. She had plenty of vices, and she suffered from chronic foot-in-mouth disease. But that was part of what made her so relatable. She wasn’t a perfect 10. She was the everywoman, and whether or not we shared all of her habits—and for health reasons, let’s hope we don’t—we could identify with her struggle to improve both herself and her situation. And, of course, to win the heart of Colin Firth, which is an admirable goal for any woman.

And say what you want about Bridget; she was a dynamic character. Sure, half of her choices blew up in her face, but at least she was out there making them. Nobody likes a passive heroine who does nothing except wait around to be acted upon by outside forces, do they? She doesn’t have to zoom around kicking booty like one of Charlie’s Angels, but if all she does is wring her hands and bemoan her fate, you want to smack her and toss the book aside.

Well, I do, but perhaps I have deep-seated hostilities about that sort of thing…

A worthwhile heroine also has to have an admirable goal or we won’t keep turning pages to find out if she achieves it. If she’s smart, tenacious, and has a great sense of humor but ultimately wants to rid the world of all puppies and kittens, nobody’s going to want to see her get her happy ending except maybe Ebenezer Scrooge and the sufferers of unbearable pet dander allergies.

There are plenty of other qualities that a worthy romance heroine can possess, but these are a few of the ones that I find bring me back over and over again to a book. These are qualities that I like to see in the heroines of the books that I write, too. Callie, in Coming Home, struggles to overcome childhood abandonment issues and face her unspoken feelings for her brother’s best friend, and ultimately she takes action and confronts her past in the hopes of building the future she wants. Shannon, in my upcoming release The Bargain, is tomboyish and awkward but dares to reach for what she wants with a kind of gritty determination that transforms both her and the former bad boy with whom she develops an unlikely bond. And then there’s Jude—well, but her story is still under wraps…

So what qualities do you like in a romance story’s heroine?

Who is one heroine that will always stick in your memory because of something about her that swept you up in her story?

And do you or do you not think pet dander allergies deserve more attention from the media?

Danny McCutcheon.

It’s a name that Callie hasn’t spoken in years, even if the man to whom it belongs has never really been all that far from her thoughts. Or her heart. But now a twist of fate will bring her back to the childhood home she left behind years ago, and to the hometown boy for whom she secretly longed.

When her mother takes a bad fall and breaks her hip, Callie leaves the bright lights of New York City to fly back west and help with the rehabilitation. It’s a tense homecoming due to a long time estrangement between mother and daughter, and it drives Callie to confront both a painful personal loss and her unanswered questions about the father who abandoned her when she was just a child.

It also brings her face to face with Danny again, and Callie quickly realizes that old feelings die hard.

But for Danny, it’s new feelings that are a problem. Callie is not the young girl he remembers but a woman now, and a very desirable one. They both have reasons to fight the growing attraction between them, but the temptation may just prove to be too much to resist, despite some very real risk to their hearts. The past casts a long shadow over the future, though, and Callie will have to overcome it or else face losing the one man who means the most to her.

7_8 TheBargainCoverTomboy Shannon Mahoney has always been a lot more comfortable with things like power tools than she is with high heels or lipstick, and she often wishes she could reinvent herself and finally tell her perfect boss, Drew Kingston, that she has had a crush on him since high school. But she is just as tongue tied and awkward around him now as she ever was, and long-familiar patterns are hard things from which to break free…

Until one day Drew’s estranged older brother Michael comes to town, bringing with him a surprising opportunity for Shannon.

Ladies’ man Michael is a former bad boy looking for redemption. He is desperate to atone for past mistakes that he made with his family, but younger brother Drew has cut him out of his life and refuses to even speak to him. Which means Michael needs help getting to Drew.

And so he approaches Shannon with a proposition: if she will get Drew to agree to hear him out, Michael will mentor Shannon in how to win his brother’s heart. Suspicious of Michael’s motives, Shannon initially enters into the bargain just to make sure Michael isn’t actually in town to cause trouble for Drew, but the two unlikely allies are surprised to discover that despite butting heads at first, they are beginning to enjoy each other’s company far more than either of them expected.

And Shannon starts to realize that maybe love isn’t about reinventing yourself after all. It’s about finding your perfect match.

Elvy learns to survive and she finds kindness in unexpected places. She uncovers her own strengths as she fights her way back to her home in Ireland.

Nancy Blanton has captured the Cromwellian era with an exciting and fast-paced story containing all the elements of the heroic quest. Elvy is a fascinating and captivating young woman who never loses sight of her goal. She is headstrong and naïve, but she has a strong love for her family and her country. I was with her every step of her journey, and I must say that I also learned a lot about the historical era. Blanton has accomplished what I think all writers of good historical fiction should. She has accurately portrayed a time in history with a real flare, serendipitously teaching her readers as she keeps them utterly captivated with her characters. Her descriptions of places and events is so vivid that it is easy to imagine being on the sugar plantation or sailing across the ocean.

The ending is a bit too easy and not quite believable. However, I am a sucker for a happy ending, so even if it is a little too slick, I was most happy to suspend my disbelief, especially because I was impressed by how much Elvy matured throughout the seven years of the story and how much she learned about both herself and her world. She did this without ever compromising her vision, a truly courageous feat. I highly recommend this book to all fans of historical fiction. It is an exciting, spine-tingling story.
