Jefferson has been given an option, if it can be called that. Either he provides a ruthless detective with the password to an illegal speakeasy or he’s framed for murder. The detective, who doesn’t believe Jefferson’s insistence that he doesn’t know the password, has thought of everything. Jefferson is trapped. The minutes tick away.

Jefferson has only has a few minutes left before Detective Barnes’ foolproof scheme is put into motion. Every detail of this subterfuge has been meticulously pre-planned, and none of the captive’s negotiation attempts are working. I felt sympathetic disorientation and vulnerability for Jefferson as I read, and I couldn’t imagine how he could ever escape the detective’s clutches.

It’s rare for me to be caught off-guard completely, but I definitely didn’t see the ending to this story coming. I did briefly wonder if a certain aspect of the plot would have reasonably been overlooked or misunderstood by real law enforcement officers during this time in history. Even without the sophisticated testing devices of this century I could think of at least one way in which the detective’s claims might have fallen apart under closer scrutiny.

The twist was so creative and perfectly suited for everything I knew about Detective Barnes and Jefferson, though, that my questions turned out to be a momentary blip in an otherwise great tale. As sad as I was to see it end, fifteen pages was the perfect length of text to tease out what was actually happening with these characters without skimping on details or making the clues too easy to decipher.

The Flaw in the Frame kept me guessing until the very end. This is a terrific choice for readers in the mood for something out of the ordinary who are well-acquainted with the most common conventions of the mystery genre.

Be careful what you wish for…

Holly Grey only took up witchery to keep her friend out of trouble – and now she’s knee-deep in hassle, in the form of apocalyptic weather, armed men, midwifery…and a sarcastic Welsh journalist.

Kai has been drawn to darkest Yorkshire by his desire to find out who he really is. What he hadn’t bargained on was getting caught up in amateur magic and dealing with a bunch of women who are trying really hard to make their dreams come true.

Together they realise that getting what you wish for is sometimes just a matter of knowing what it is you want…

Holly doesn’t really believe in love, she goes for the physical every time. Her best friend is the opposite. Megan believes every guy she dates is her true love. Desperate to find the real thing Megan drags Holly along to a group of women wanting to practice a new branch of magic arts. Snorting with disbelief, Holly goes to make sure Megan isn’t taken advantage of.

The five very different women in the group collect ingredients and cast a spell, but Holly’s disbelief is stretched when it seems her wish is coming true, but not in the way she anticipated. A casual meeting brings her into contact with a man who stirs her emotions, but she is determined to keep things on a business footing. This is fine until a pregnant woman forces them closer together.

This novel has its ups and downs emotionally, but there are many light-hearted bits too and mysterious happenings in the woods. Are they magical? Or is it someone trying to scare the women away? I love the way the author wound the women’s wishes together and how the resolution of each depended on her interaction with the group. The story moves at a steady pace with highs and lows, but at all times I wanted to know what was happening next.

At the end of the book I was left wondering, did magic have a hand in the results? Or was it just coincidence? I really, really wanted it to be magic. Love this book! Well done, Ms Lovering.

Lady Mary has been waiting years for this opportunity. Not that her sister has thrown off her spinster ways and become betrothed, it’s finally Mary’s chance for true love. She knows exactly who she wants –and it’s not someone as wild, unmanageable, and sinfully seductive as Ryder Cavanaugh.

Ryder Cavanaugh, Marquess of Raventhorne, had never met a woman who wouldn’t happily fall at his feet–or into his bed…until Lady Mary Cynster. But Ryder has made some decisiosn abotu his life and he’ll only succeed at being the man he wants to be with Mary by his side. And convincing her of that fact is just the kind of challenge he thrills at…

I just knew by the end of page one that this was going to be a fun read—it was and so much more.

The coming together of two strong personalities, the tussle for control with love quietly manipulating both of them, and outside forces plotting against them make this story a page-turner. Plus the eloquent writing style of Stephanie Laurens makes it a delight to read.

Mary Alice Cynster knows Ryder Cavanaugh, Marquess of Raventhorne, has a will stronger than hers—not good husband material. She long ago determined to be in charge of her own life. Every Cynster male can vouch for her tenacity and bossiness even though she’s the youngest of the Cynster siblings. Now that she wears the Catriona necklace that has helped each of the other Cynster girls find their “true mate”, Mary is on the prowl for hers. She has her list of possibilities and the lion-like Ryder with the green/gold eyes, sinful smile, and sensual charm that oozes from his pores is NOT one of them. She has her sights set on his half-brother Randolph. He just might be the one.

Ryder knows Mary would scare young Randolph to death. Ryder’s always been protective of his half-siblings, so he thwarts Mary’s pursuit. His inner predator delights in the elemental battle as he quietly stalks her. She is “pure challenge”. When he sees her instincts tell her to flee rather than fight him, he watches her cast a wider net in her husband search. Now he is always close to protect her. Mary considers him a “pest”, but waltzing with him is magical

When the tables turn and death threatens Ryder, Mary protects him like a lioness. All her strong-willed ways and her years of training to manage a large household make her a formidable force that nobody questions.

Lavinia, Ryder’s step-mother, is a pain in the neck working her way down. Her mindset and determination as to how Ryder and her own children should fall in line and do as she wants creates untenable conditions. The back story of Ryder and his family is enthralling.

Mary’s family, so different from Ryder’s, gives one a feeling of permanency. Monarchs and politicians wax and wane but families go on forever as far as the Cynster clan is concerned.

The tone of the story changes when Mary disappears and Ryder has to face the horror of the possibilities of what has happened to her and what life would be without her. Fears make heart-pounding scenes as an all out search is made for her.

How Ms. Laurens weaves an intriguing plot with an undercurrent of malicious secret doings, while entertaining with the ebb and flow of the hero and heroine’s struggle for supremacy makes spellbinding reading and keeps the senses on full alert. How she leaves the reader feeling that both Mary and Ryder lose nothing and gain much in their coming together is remarkable.

The Taming of Ryder Cavanaugh sparkles with humor, entices with nefarious doings, and enchants with love scenes that up the blood pressure and take one’s breath away. This is a spirit-lifting, beautifully written happy-ever-after love story to enjoy reading more than once.

When a high school senior shows signs of mental illness, Amanda attempts to get him help, but she’s rebuffed by his parents. When the same boy then becomes the prime suspect in a murder at the Philadelphia Main Library, and runs away, Amanda, who knows he’s confused and in need of help—whether or not he committed the crime—has no choice but to run after him. And to run into the possibility of becoming the next victim herself.

Have you ever had a time when no matter how hard you tried to do the right thing, life just kept getting more and more tangled as everything went wrong? Would it be better not to do anything? That’s a question that Amanda Pepper keeps asking herself as she finds herself in one disaster after another, both at work and at home.

Gillian Roberts has written a wonderfully exciting mystery novel with a very engaging detective. Amanda Pepper is a high school teacher with an unsupportive, obstructive principal. She teaches at Philly Prep, a school designed to “appeal to those (sufficiently affluent) youngsters who have a difficult time in larger, more standardized schools. Our mandate is to ignite a spark in the insufficiently fueled.” Amanda obviously cares about her students, taking time to encourage them, helping them find new ways to express themselves, and finally, trying to get medical help for a senior who starts behaving oddly. But her efforts seem only to backfire, getting her fired, threatened with law suits, and angering her policeman partner. With both a strong sense of justice and a highly developed sense of curiosity, she has a talent for finding mysteries. She is a fully developed character with both strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly, she is a joy to be around.

The supporting characters are also very true-to-life. I love her sister Beth, as well as her two eager-beaver tenth grade students who track down their own scandal for a newspaper expose. The villains in the book are well-defined and even likeable at times. This book is a real page-turner, as Amanda moves more deeply into trouble. The mystery itself is only solved at the very end in an exciting chase with an unexpected outcome. Roberts plays fairly with her readers, but she also has enough twists and turns in the plot that I didn’t get it worked out until the conclusion.

This is the ninth Amanda Pepper mystery, and I have discovered a new detective. I plan to read the other eight and I hope that Roberts writes many more of these wonderful mysteries. I highly recommend Adam and Evil to any fans of the cozy mystery.

The more she reads, the less she wants to know.

A murderer is stalking the Windy City, carving out the eyes of his victims as grisly souvenirs. When shy Ellen Gordon finds a diary left behind in a coffee shop, she can’t keep from reading it. And when she meets the author in person, he’s just as charming as his writing. Only when she reads further does she find clues to the identity of Chicago’s terrifying serial killer. Could it be the author, himself? Ellen will have to uncover the truth about her new boyfriend quickly if she doesn’t want to become the killer’s next victim.

Killer’s Diary does not just focus on serial killers but the reasons behind murder, the underbelly of society and the dark philosophy underneath abusive childhoods. There is a question of morality to be answered: is ‘God or the devil’ behind murder? Of course, there is a mysterious killer and the usual ‘is-it-isn’t-it’ murder plot, too.

The novel is well paced, following Ellen’s new relationship and her quick reading of the diary, but speeds up as events occur closer together.

Pinkerton has a great control of language and apt use of metaphor, in particular a brilliant philosophical passage where the human body is described as a ‘sponge’ which can only take so much bad before it squeezes itself out to become clean, sullying others in the process. This reflects the structure of the novel and its conclusion, providing a motive for murder which is understandable to us all.

This is not a novel where there is a villain and an angel. This is a novel where ‘bad’ is made by bad and the reader must form their own conclusions as to whether evil is born or made and whether these individuals can be blamed for their actions, or not.

The mind of a killer is delved into in great detail and shown through blunt statements as well as subtle sentence structure. For example, page eight contains thirteen sentences beginning with ‘He’ within a passage voiced by a killer. This does provide the intended manic list of things, symbolic of a confused mind. However, it is also one of the only places in the novel I feel Pinkerton overdid his art. Five or six repetitions would have the intended effect but thirteen is too repetitive.

The only other slip from near perfect prose is a slight tendency towards melodrama; a character defies realism by stating ‘let me hear your death scream’. Despite being creepy, this comment has the tone of a cartoon or movie as opposed to something written in a killer’s personal diary; it jolts. However, this statement could have been planned to feel false in order to implant doubt and continue the is-it-isn’t-it story line.

Perhaps to off-set the deeply engrained, dark tone and subject matter of the novel, murder and morals is not the only insight into human behaviour. Alongside this underbelly of humanity there is hope, a possible relationship and a reconstruction of life after its abusive beginning. Pinkerton’s novel is a skilled investigation into the two strands bad childhoods can take: irreversible psychological damage, leading to physical harm, or a long reconstruction which can result in a positive direction. It is a carefully structured capsule of the human need to inflict pain or to heal and, just like human nature, the novel surprises.

Robbed of her family’s legacy, Gwen Henderson blindly sets out to win it back. In Divine she finds employment until she rejoins the rodeo circuit for one more winning year. What she doesn’t foresee is getting tangled up with two cowboys who have her yearning for life in Divine when her dreams are in Colorado.

Rolling like a tumbleweed through life, Julián Alvarez takes the chance to be with Gwen, knowing she can’t stay permanently and his heart may be in ruins when she leaves.

Resigned to loneliness, Chris Potter believes his faults and lack of finesse may mean he’ll spend life looking out for others but never knowing love—until the day he sets eyes on a feisty cowgirl named Gwen.

Can she trade her dreams of life in Colorado for love in Divine, Texas—and is she even capable of leaving the two cowboys who have stolen her heart?

Sometimes even the best plans and intentions can change. Acceptance and home is where the heart is, even if it’s where you least expect it.

She is a retired barrel racer whose family farm falls into trouble because of a bad business decision by her dad. Lost and scared, she ends up in the only other place she feels safe, Divine, Texas.

Julian Alvarez has known Gwen a while and when they decide to get a little closer Julian is pleased that she felt safe enough to come to him despite her troubles, even if her forever plans don’t include him. Deciding a life with Gwen for however long she’s in town is better than nothing, Julian goes head first. Of course he hadn’t planned on his friend to fall head first for Gwen either.

Chris Potter is Julian’s best friend and after an accidental first meeting with Gwen, he’s caught. Hook, line and sinker. But lovable Chris has his own personal issues and when Gwen and Julian make it apparent they want to include Chris, he has to work out his problems in order to accept the gift they both are offering him.

The three of them begin a journey together, knowing there is an expiration date but deciding to seize the day and enjoy what they can. The journey helps each of the three deal with a variety of issues, I felt the overall theme was acceptance.

This was another great story by author Heather Rainier who continues to keep the storylines fresh and different after fourteen books. While this wasn’t my personal favorite (I’m sorry, Ms. Rainier, you’re gonna have a hard time topping Seth) it was still  a five star book. My favorite part was the Woobie realization; it was so sweet even I teared up.

One thing I love is that you can pick up these books and read them without having to read the previous books because the author does a great job of recapping enough without information dumping all over the place. That’s a pet peeve of mine as a reader. If you like sexy cowboys, sweet mouth Jersey boys and strong headed females, please read this and do yourself a favor, read them all! You won’t be sorry and I can’t wait for what is next in Divine!

I really enjoyed this story. Some of the back story and language used was confusing at times, but when I realized that it allowed me to understand Eliana and her position better, it made perfect sense. There were some very hot sex scenes, but there was also a lot of time where Eliana is learning to trust and allow herself to let go. I was very upset when Eliana and Kon had a falling out, and when they finally come back together I rejoiced. It’s an interesting relationship, it’s Kon and Dane, Kon and Eliana and the Eliana and Dane. They all love and relate to each other differently and yet love each other as a trio as well. Eliana lived a hard life so if reading about a character’s past abuse is a problem, I’d skip this one.

I recommend this book for fans of unique paranormal worlds with some serious sexiness thrown in.

Welcome to Cupid, where every wish for love comes true…

For years, a small group of women in Cupid, TX, led by Millie Greenway, have taken it upon themselves to keep the Cupid legend alive. Now Millie has roped her four disbelieving granddaughters into joining the cause.

Lace Bettingfield knows for a fact that the Cupid legend is bogus. As a shy sixteen-year-old, she left a letter at the statue and got nothing in return but heaps of embarassment when her letter ended up printed in the school newspaper. But now the boy she longed for is back in town and Lace can’t help wondering…what if?

Ah, yes! This one brings back memories of high school years and the emotional growing pains that went along with them.

Lace Bettingfield well remembers the vicious teasing and trauma of falling in love with an ‘older’ boy, who was the football hero and sought after by all the girls. As time passes, she realizes her bad time in high school has an upside. It toughened her, made her strong and resilient. She’d conquered her stutter, lost weight and gained it back because she chose to. She is now healthy and knows who she is and is comfortable in her own skin. Moreover, she has earned a Ph.D. in plant science and is back in Cupid, Texas doing what she loves to do. She is in charge of the Botanical Gardens where the box for “Letters to Cupid” is located. She loves the arid Trans-Pecos area of Texas where it takes toughness for people and plants alike to survive.

When Pierce Hollister, the Cowboys quarterback who is sidelined with a broken leg, returns to Cupid to see his father and brother Malcolm, all the long-ago high school hoopla surfaces as Lace’s extended family and friends recall and elaborate on every painful moment Lace lived through back then.

Somewhere along the way from high school to becoming a pro, Pierce bought into his own press and now accepts the accolades and hero worship with equanimity. However, there is a niggling deep inside him that nags—will his leg ever heal so he can be at the top of his game like he had been before? He is Cupid’s local celebrity and his father’s favorite son; a fact that makes for strained feeling between Pierce and his younger brother Malcolm. Their relationship makes an attention-getting side story.

When Piece sees the grownup Lace, his old friend’s little sister that was off-limits to him in high school because of that unspoken male code of ‘don’t hit on your friend’s sister’. Now that the code no longer applies, he turns on the charm which Lace vows to ignore. As the ‘mating dance’ ebbs and flows with all the people of Cupid putting in their two cents, the reader gets quite an emotional rollercoaster ride.

I struggled a little with the over abundance of secondary characters, but the sparkling metaphors, analogies, etc. make the reading delightful. Expressions like: “spunk of a chipmunk”, “you can’t push a river”, ‘wants to devour him like a starving hawk moth caterpillar devours a tomato plant”, eyes like blue gas flames”, “lit her up like a match to gasoline” and so many more show the reader so much about the action, the emotions and the characters. Also, the threads of humor, fun, illness, and long-lasting emotional wounds, along with that strong, enduring thread of love that generates some super love scenes make the design of this tale captivating. Good entertainment!

Never in the history of the Guild has there been any doubt about this. So where did Diana come from? The only living female Bloodhound, she is kept secret from those in charge. Created after an attack by a rogue hound, Diana was turned to save her life. Just as she was changed to save her life, so was Nate Powell. Once the brainchild of The Guild, Nate was captured, tortured and turned by the vampires he was helping to destroy. But Nate isn’t all vampire, he is the only mixed breed, part vampire and part Bloodhound. When news of a rogue possibly working with vampires come to the knowledge of the Hounds in the field, Nate and Diana team up to go undercover and learn the truth. What they find is more than a rogue; they discover that all the Bloodhounds have ever thought to be true has been so many lies. They discover betrayal and lies, from the top layers of the Guild down through the ranks. Can these two unique beings battle through and bring back proof to those who need to know it? Can the work together without falling victim to their Bloodhound natures when the new moon comes? And will these two discover that love can come to everyone, even two uniquely impossible beings?

Diana is strong, determined and loyal to the town and the people she protects. She is willing to do what it takes to protect them, even if that means going undercover as the ‘pet’ Hound of a vampire. It doesn’t hurt that the vampire she will be with is Nate, because she is already a bit attracted to him and will enjoy his company. I enjoyed watching as she worked her way into Nate’s life, and his heart. I like Diana for her honest and direct approach to life, and her determination to prove to Nate he is worth being loved.

Nate Powell is the genius behind the weapons the Bloodhounds use. He has been reborn, his transformation from human to Bloodhound/vampire reversing his aging, and making his a young man again. Smart and creative, he is loyal and caring of his friends. He feels that he doesn’t deserve Diana, yet he slowly falls ever deeper in love with her. I loved the conversations he has with Diana, revealing so much without realizing what he is saying.

This story is filled with betrayal, romance, and danger. When the extent of the treachery is finally revealed, it reaches to the inner circle of The Guild, and only Nate and Diana can stop what is happening. Many of the other Hounds make appearances here, and it is nice to see how their relationships are working out. I really enjoyed watching Nate and Diana as they fought the attraction that was slowly building between them, and the fantastic moment when they realized they were so much better together that apart. There were surprises, and some major decisions to be made once the corruption in The Guild was made known to Wilder and the others. This was a hard fought happy ever after, but so worth the wait for these two special people. This is for those who like their fantasy on the rough edge and their romance gritty and hard won.
