Sex hot enough to burn their worlds down…

Pietro doesn’t think he has time for love. Being a demon king and part owner of Seven Sins Inn leaves him little time for women. But when his friends claim that they’ve found the perfect match for him, Peitro is determined to prove that he doesn’t need a set up–he can find his own date, thank you very much. Undeterred, his friends send him to investigate a “problem” at one of the Inn’s guest functions, where Pietro sees the woman of his dreams, right there in the very kissable flesh.

Paranormal negotiator Callisto Monroe went to the Seven Sins Inn for a friend’s wedding, hoping she could scope the place out for work. But she didn’t plan on being swept away by the hot, dark-haired demon, or spending a weekend having the hottest sex of her life. All that’s well and good. But when things get too hot to handle, how is she supposed to protect her heart?

Callisto Monroe found herself at a wedding in the Seven Sins Inn which worked out perfectly since she needed to check it out. Callisto worked with her father as an intermediary between the human world and the paranormal one. She did not expect to meet anyone but found that she couldn’t turn away from the gorgeous man with the fiery eyes.

Pietro owned the Seven Sins Inn; he along with his friend Viktor made sure that it was a successful establishment. Viktor and the matchmaker Jonquil wanted to find a mate for him but Pietro had absolutely no intention of ever shackling himself to a female. He was content to stay as he was, single and unencumbered by a mate.

Seven Sins Inn: Pietro and Callisto is a very good story filled with lots of hot demon sex and a good story line. Pietro did not want to mate but when he saw Callisto he couldn’t help himself. The characters in this book were engaging and the chemistry between Callisto and Pietro was sizzling hot. I enjoyed their interaction and being a demon, Pietro was definitely an alpha male. I loved how Pietro would demand but Callisto would turn the tables on him and show him that she could also make demands. It was nice to see that even though he was a demon he had a softer side, more human than demon. The author made the characters bond on a deeper emotional level by having them share stories of their unhappy childhood which appealed to this reader because then the story wasn’t just about sex, and there was lots of hot sex in this story. Seven Sins Inn: Pietro and Callisto was a definite page turner and one I would recommend to anyone looking for an interesting and sizzling tale. This is the first book that I have read by Selena Illyria and I look forward to reading more from her.

Teen John Riley is excited about his summer job sprucing up an old abandoned cemetery. It would give him a little money, allow him to play summer baseball, and be with his girlfriend, Susan. The summer is perfect until he discovers a crumbling tombstone on the outside of the cemetery fence. A girl who died at age sixteen in 1925 lay beneath it, and John is intrigued by a life cut so short.

Enchanted by his thoughts of a teenager who died so long ago, John wants to know more about this girl. His obsession deepens until one day, he hears flirtatious tittering coming from the depths of the grave. Soon, the girl who is supposed to be dead appears. It doesn’t take long for John to fall in love with her. Foolishly, he doesn’t realize the evil in this possessive, beguiling creature. Yes, he should have left her lying beneath Balbena’s Grave.

Someday you and I will die. Almost no one knows when or how this will happen but we all know it’s coming sooner or later. Maybe this is why cemeteries and ghost stories are so enticing.

Balbena is quite a creepy ghost. John is able to piece together the story of her life from an old newspaper article and a few conversations with older townspeople but I was pleased to see how much of her life remains untold. Somehow the dead feel scarier to me when our speculations about the past are only partially confirmed.

To be honest, though, I had a hard time relating to John as he comes across as a little too perfect. Until the plot starts moving he doesn’t seem to have genuine conflicts with anyone in his life. His family, friends, neighbors and girlfriend have nothing but good things to say about him and he’s consistently shown to be hard-working, loyal, respectful, patient and kind. There’s nothing wrong with writing virtuous characters, of course, but John is too good be true. We’ve all said and done things we later come to regret so it seemed odd to me that John needed a supernatural being to spur him into having a bad day.

It’s also puzzling that a novel set in present day would mention a newspaper keeping old copies of their paper in filing cabinets. It would have been far more realistic for John to search for the details surrounding Balbena’s death online either through a public search engine or by logging into the Burgman Sentinel’s digitized archives. Until John’s cellphone rings in this scene I took it to be an indication that the story was set at least twenty years ago.

Figuring out the most appropriate age recommendation was tricky for me. While there aren’t any sexually explicit or violent scenes this book would be most appealing to readers who are old enough to fall in love or work. Watching the characters react to everything that comes with these new experiences was one of my favorite parts of the story and for this reason I recommend it for only those old enough to commiserate with John.

Have you ever walked past a graveyard and asked yourself questions about the individuals buried there? Were they good people? What was it like to live a hundred years ago? Is there anything they’d have to say to those of us still living? If so Balbena’s Grave may be right up your alley.

Never play cards with a wizard . . .

I knew I should have checked his sleeves . . .

One wrong turn of the cards and I find myself trying to scale a frozen cliff to break into a castle to steal an item to pay off that damn wizard. Oh, did I mention that I’m stuck with three other guys who’ll probably try to kill me and keep the reward for themselves? And that the castle is heavily guarded? Plus, there’s an evil spirit rumored to lurk on the mountain? And I have no idea what the item is or what it looks like?

Yep. My luck is holding steady. All bad.

First off, never play cards with a wizard. After all, you know he’s not going to lose, right? And secondly, don’t offer to do a quest unless you know more about it. It sounded simple, but it wasn’t…

Mr. White’s main character is like a mercenary. He’s strong, nimble, smart enough to still be alive, and not afraid of much. He’s also willing pursue a beautiful woman when he runs across one. Fighting demons he can’t see is another story.

This author has woven a story set in the cold that is descriptive enough to give you a shiver. As if the main character hasn’t challenges enough, he is going on his quest with the others gaming at the table with the wizard. They’re not stellar companions and most likely are going to try stealing the item he’s trying to retrieve, but they’re all he’s got.

The whole story has a mysterious setting and none of the characters are what they appear to be. They have secret talents, surprises up their sleeves, and they are only interested in themselves. Well, they do have some interest in the Queen’s slave since she’s beautiful and seductive. But is she interested in them or only using them?

This is fast paced story filled with surprises. I admired our hero, empathized with the Queen’s slave, and hated the bad men, just like the author wanted me to. He kept my interest, made the story a bit spicy, and made me hope I might read more by him. He writes a good tale and he could easily write a sequel to this story. I’ll be watching for it.

10 things about me
1. I used to be a 911 dispatcher, and it is a really hard job. I’m glad I did it. It was a good life experience, but I am equally glad I don’t do it anymore. It’s stressful!

2. I have a strange talent for making things out of artificial fur. I make teddy bears and purses. I am self-taught. My purses are quite striking and I am usually stopped in public and people really get excited and want to buy them.

3. I’ve killed at least 50 scorpions. I live in the desert!

4. I was afraid of Harrison Ford when I was 10 or 11. My mother took me to a Halloween party in Hollywood to see Shawn Cassidy perform. I remember Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill were in a booth together signing autographs. (Star Wars must have just come out then) Mark was happy and bouncing around from person to person, but Mr. Ford was really angry about something and it showed. I refused to go anywhere near him. It was the first time I was ever truly scared of an adult. I just remember Harrison Ford being very tall (remember, I was a kid) and angry. Now that I’m an adult, I’m sure he’s probably a nice guy. I still wonder what he was so mad about that night though.

5. I can paint. I took oil painting lessons for two years from a very talented local artist. I don’t paint my own covers because I never said I paint fast. I am a terribly slow painter, and a little rusty too. I’ve spent all my time lately writing.

6. I am a terrible baker. Don’t ever ask me to bake you something, I can’t even do cookies right. For the record I am an OK cook though.

7. I collect the same Fisher Price toys I had as a young child. Weird huh! I think there is some strange chemical reaction in the brain a person gets when they see and hold in their hands a toy they played with at a very young age. I bought my Fisher Price School House and Chime ball on E-Bay, yes I get an endorphin rush when I ring the little bell. I tried to buy a 2XL too, but I lost the bid.

8. I don’t have a tattoo, I don’t plan on getting one either.

9. I used to go to Disneyland every week. I had an annual pass and lived 20 minutes away. We would only go for maybe an hour or two. I used to take my Grandma to the Carnation Plaza where they would play big band music from the 1940s.

10. I don’t know how to drive a stick shift.

About the Bio:

My name is Shelly Holt and I live in the middle of the harsh and unforgiving Mojave desert. I write my stories looking out of a window that shows sweeping desert views. Outside is a barren and severe landscape, yet inside my head lives a world filled with exotic shape-shifters come to life, pulled from the pages of myth and legend, ready to entice and seduce any reader brave enough to take them on.

It’s funny, I never wanted to be a writer! In 7th grade English, we were given an assignment. We were told to write an original poem and turn it in the next day. I was determined to turn in not a good poem, but a great poem. I spent the whole night working on it instead of watching my favorite show, The Waltons. (Hey! it was 1980.) I turned it in the next day. Apparently, I succeeded a little too well and was accused of copying it from a book. (1980 remember, no internet yet). The teacher stated and I quote “this is too good for a seventh grader, where did you copy it from?” Well, I didn’t write for 30 years after that. In my 40’s, after a life changing move to rural Nevada as a caregiver to my father, I realized I needed a way to earn a little money on the side. I did some research on the internet and read all about a certain little book, about a certain little college student and a handsome billionaire with some ahem! (issues.) I decided after reading that book, I could do that, and Tasting Fire was born. I’ll admit it’s been strange revisiting a talent buried deep inside for so long, forgotten, but apparently not lost. It’s been an important journey and one I am quite thankful for and excited to see where it takes me.

P.S. Mr. Jordan, I really did write that poem!

A look, a kiss, a taste of melted chocolate…

Whispering Cove, Book 2

Celebrity chef Kathleen Wilson has returned to Whispering Cove for her high school reunion. Tired of big-city life, she’s looking forward to relaxing in the quaint fishing village. The one thing she’s not looking forward to is facing the boy from her past. The boy she turned her back on ten years ago. The same boy she has never gotten over.

Firefighter Trent Parker has never given up on reuniting with his Katy. When he hears she’s back in town, he figures the quickest way to show her where she really belongs is to launch an all-out, blatant campaign of seduction. An accident with a fire hose leaves her soaked—and ignites a firestorm of need in them both, with only one way to extinguish the flames.

Soon they’re burning up the sheets, but when morning comes and the smoke clears, Katy faces a choice she never thought she’d have to make again. To leave for another ten years…or admit that the heat between her and Trent isn’t about to burn out.

Kathleen Wilson followed her dream, leaving Whispering Cove to become a successful celebrity chef. She always planned on returning, to the town and to the man she left behind, hunky firefighter Trent Parker. What she didn’t plan was how long it would take, and once she does come back, she isn’t sure if he still feels the same about her. As for Trent, he let her go, knowing she needed to live out her dream so they could eventually be together. He is sure how he feels, but isn’t sure of Katy’s heart anymore. After so much time apart, she in Chicago and he in Whispering Cove, have they changed too much to make it work between them? Can Katy be happy with her fireman, or does she need the big city excitement? Can these two have a happy ever after, after all these years?

Wet, by Cathryn Fox, is the second in the Whispering Cove series, and it is as well developed and engaging as the first book. This one has the same hometown feel to it, with folks we’ve seen before and want to see again. This story is a bit more light-hearted than the first, but still as passionate and captivating in its own right. I am enjoying this look into a relaxed and small town environment, where life has its own pace and people are friendly and open to each other.

Kathleen ‘Katy’ Wilson is smart, talented and successful. She left Whispering Cove with the blessing and encouragement of her long time boyfriend, and she has fulfilled her dreams, becoming a celebrity chef, and enjoying her life in Chicago. When she returns to Whispering Cove, she hopes Trent still wants her, and is a bit afraid that things may have changed. I like Katy, and her courage and determination to follow her dream, knowing it could cost her a chance at true love.

Trent Parker is a firefighter, strong and dependable, and sexy to boot. When he learned that Katy wanted to leave, follow her dream to become a chef, he secretly hated that idea. But he supported her in spite of his feelings, thinking she would be back home soon. I loved that, as he waited, he learned to cook, and created recipes himself, while he hoped and waited for Katy.

There are some problems ahead for these two characters, with the publicity surrounding Katy and Trent as they try to work through their feelings, and also the feelings Katy has about the direction her career seems to be headed. The secondary characters are, once again, stellar, and the story is fun and engagingly hot. This is a great short book, perfect for those moments when a novel just doesn’t fit.

Facing danger from both sides of the grave, will two souls merge to find a love that conquers all?

Communing with spirits has been both gift and curse to Emme Walters. Now it’s made her a killer’s target. Emme knows why the Dowager Duchess of Briarleigh invited her to a house party—to investigate whether the duke, Rhys Brammel, murdered his wife years ago. But Emme never imagined she would fall in love with the brooding duke.

Branded by society as a possible killer, Rhys is suspicious of Emme and her alleged “gift.” Then a late night encounter creates awareness of her other, more attractive, aspects. When Emme’s life is threatened, Rhys becomes her protector.

Emme and Rhys find passion and peril as they join forces to solve the mysteries at Briarleigh. She made him believe in spirits, but can she make him believe in love?

Emme Walters is attempting to return to her bedchamber after awakening from another strange bout of sleepwalking. Lord Rhys Brammel follows her to try and understand what underhanded task she must be about at such a late hour. When she’s at risk of being exposed – and her reputation ruined – his natural, gentlemanly instincts urge him to protect her, and they both escape undiscovered. Both Rhys and Emme are enjoying a weekend party held by Rhys’ family, though each are reluctant in their own ways for their own reasons. Rhys in particular finds Emme’s motives for being present particularly suspect, but that distrust only fuels his curiosity and interest in the lovely young lady.

This is a wonderful historical novel, full of secrets, mysteries and paranormal abilities. I sympathized with both Rhys and Emme, caught up in strictures and rules not of their own making, and each in their own way trying their best to balance their honor, duty and their own desires. While this could have been yet another historical romance the author adds far more depth both to the plot and characters. There are spirits who communicate with Emme, regrets of actions long past and all sorts of intrigue that make this a vivid, wonderful story to read.

There is plenty of conflict and tension in the forms of both Rhys’ and Emme’s scheming family, as well as both Rhys and his best friend’s inherent distrust in Emme’s paranormal powers. Artfully crafted this book will satisfy a wide range of readers, from those who love historical, to medium or even straight mystery readers. There is also plenty of sexual chemistry and spice to keep the romance readers turning the pages to discover what happens next. I greatly enjoyed this novel and found the author’s style, wit and tone of voice easily readable. Recommended.

Who can resist a free room at the Velvet Glove in exchange for rehabilitating an abused puppy? Certainly not Dane, who accepts the offer, but is surprised find that the pup in question is actually Tyg, a young man and sub who was left by his master, in a cage, with no food or water. Tyg needs help and, Dane is the man for the job, even if he’s used to working with animals, not humans. Can Dane rehabilitate a human as he would a dog? Does he even want to? As his relationship with Tyg blossoms into something sweet and heartwarming, Dane thinks he just might, but what happens when Tyg’s “owner” returns?

Dane answers a special request from the Velvet Glove. He thinks he’s going to re-home and help re-train an abused, abandoned dog, but instead finds a slightly different situation. Dane finds himself thrown in the deep end of a special kind of fetish – men who pretend to be dogs. Taken by surprise by what he’s confronted with, Dane is nevertheless unwilling to desert an ill-treated man any more than he could an abused, real puppy. What follows between Dane and Tyg is a very different but no less touching story about learning to trust after deep betrayal and exploring outside the bound of a “normal” romantic relationship.

Tastefully written, this is certainly not your average romance. For those with a broader mind, however, it is an eye-opening read to a different lifestyle and set of rules. I found myself quite invested in Tyg as the author showed his perspective as well as Dane’s. Tyg is a truly damaged young man and coping the only way he seems capable of. Dane is a very loving, caring man who, while he seemed initially as if he’d bitten off more than he could chew, still appeared more than willing and able to rise to the challenge Tyg presents him with.

Overall despite the extraordinary circumstances I found this a sensual, well written story of erotic love and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’d recommend for anyone to look past some of the strong tones of dog-fetish to see beneath the exterior. Those who can do so will find a wonderful story of trust blossoming to love to heal the hurts of a man terribly abused. Both Tyg and Dane find something rare and almost magical, real love, where neither one expected it.

Rose Strickland is having a blue Christmas. Her friend is arrested for attempted murder, her sexy bad guy crush is marked by a hit man, and her boss is locked in an epic smackdown with a rival diner. Determined to save those she loves, Rose embarks on an investigation more tangled than a box of last year’s tree lights. With her eclectic gang at the ready, Rose stumbles across dead bodies, ex-cons, chop shops, jealous girlfriends, jilted lovers, and a gaggle of strippers in a battle for freedom she might not survive.

Not having read the first book of the series, I suffered a tad of culture shock. Terri Austin’s “oh-so-real” descriptions of The Bottom Dollar strip club, Axton’s house, Penn’s Cigar Bar, and a few other places along with the R-rated language plopped me right down into a unique environment and into a mystery that had so many suspects they needed to take a number. Last Diner Standing is crammed full of complex characters with clandestine actions running amok.

Rose Strickland, who hasn’t earned a bachelor’s degree in six years of college, juggles her many lives as she tries to decide what she wants to be when she grows up. Her family’s high society life that she must be a part of at times always gets short changed. Her waitress job she does pretty much on auto-pilot and full speed ahead because she needs the money and feels an unshakeable loyalty to Ma, the owner of the diner who gave her a job when she didn’t know how to do anything. Her detective work that she races about doing takes her into the company of criminals, cheats, dope-addicts, strippers, not-so-clean cops, and lots of ne’er-do-wells. Amidst all these she is also a peacemaker and a loyal friend that sees beyond human flaws and failing to help unstintingly when help is needed.

The secondary characters are a mottled lot in this entertaining story. Ms. Austin’s great descriptions of them bring out a unique type of humor and unusual outlooks on life and the conventional rules of society.

Roxy, Rose’s co-worker and bestie, with her blue hair and attention-getting attire, not to mention her lock-picking skills, has her own agenda but never fails to go help Rose when needed. Dane Harker, the lawyer; Sullivan, entrepreneur aka criminal; and Axton Graystone, Rose’s unfailing friend of many years who is also a dropout from high society, are all ever willingly to come to Rose’s aid when the chips are down and things get in a bind.

Janelle, in danger of going to prison for something she didn’t do, is Rose’s friend from college and is in desperate need of help since the cops consider her guilty and are doing nothing about searching for the true culprit.

Rose figures she has sold her soul to help Janelle but declares she will worry about that later. She will do all she can to help so Janelle can stay with her two children.

In this story, told in first-person, the reader is swept into a vicarious experience that includes visits to a strip club with graphic descriptions of the action; visits to Axton’s unique home where he keeps special brownies baked for his friend, Stoner, who lives with him and where he gives sanctuary to Rose’s friends who are in harm’s way—BIG time; and visits to Ma Ferguson’s diner during a time when Ma wages war against her competitor Rudy that she feels is horning in on her territory.

Last Diner Standing is an adventure in reading I might have missed if I had not branched out from the type stories I usually read. It is a story I will not soon forget. Although the language and the some of the actions are crude, they seem to fit in with the characters and the environment they function in. The characters’ loyalty, humor, and non-judgmental attitudes create resonating themes throughout this mystery. I really did get a surprise about who the “bad person” turned out to be. How Rose saves the day is fantastic—woven in so subtle and natural.

Last Diner Standing is a memorable story that I stayed up late to finish because Ms. Austin kept me totally in the story from start to finish.

Hospital heartthrob Vince has never met someone so untouchable or so prickly, and he’s immediately consumed by her case. He even has a course of treatment in mind: a night of passion.

But when Anu’s defensive push comes to Vince’s passionate shove, he finds himself suddenly specializing in matters of the heart.

Dr Vince McHenry might be a brilliant doctor and a medical researcher without compare – but he is also an insufferably arrogant jerk. Anushka Gupta knew his every flaw, but she couldn’t help the fantasties of his smile and hands which haunted her daydreams. In a whirlwind romance, Anu isn’t certain whether to indulge in the insanity surrounding her and Vince, or run away and hold onto her independence.

This is short story is a modern medical romance. I found both Vince and Anu to be instantly likeable characters, neither of them being overly clichéd, and well rounded considering the brevity of the story. The setting is certainly in the present day (no wistful sighs or waiting for the doctor to take the lead here) and with just enough spice to bring a blush to your face and check no one else is reading over your shoulder. Anu is a strong woman who knows what she wants but isn’t domineering to achieve it, and Vince is equal parts arrogant jerk and fallible human.

Ms. Snyder is to be commended on a really well written story with memorable characters, sizzling sex scenes and a healthy dose equally made up of reality and fantasy. Highly enjoyable!

A Christmas getaway may be just the thing to fulfill your greatest desires.

Conall Lennox is trying something new this holiday, a single’s gathering at a resort in Colorado. The woman he meets there is a breath of fresh air for him. It doesn’t take long and he’s envisioning a lot longer than the short time they have together.

Sage Addison comes to the Village Resort to avoid the stress of Christmas with her nagging family. Still, meeting tall, dark, and handsome makes her think of spending more than just Christmas with him.

After their time together is over will Conall and Sage learn that not all liaisons are meant to be brief but can be the beginning of something new, something wonderful? Miracles can and do happen in Wonderland.

Holiday Liaison is the third book in a collaboration of three authors, Aliyah Burke, Yvette Hines and Bridget Midway. Each book by these authors had original characters but the stories are connected by the setting which threads throughout all three books. Rekindling Christmas by Yvette Hines, O come by Bridget Midway and Holiday Liaison by Aliyah Burke all take place at the Village Resort in Starview, Colorado. The characters all come to the Village Resort for the singles week hoping to find a match or just to have fun. These three authors also collaborated another time with the Taken series.

In Holiday Liaison, Sage Addison decides to make it a real vacation by booking two weeks at the Village Resort and staying until the day after Christmas. Sage just wants to avoid hearing her mother harp on her about not being married, not giving her any grandbabies, and trying to get her back with her ex Charles. She figures that she will relax the first week, get in some skiing, sightseeing and then enjoy the singles event the resort offers the following week.

Conall Lennox’s three co-workers Ben, Travis and Steve talked him into going to singles week at Village Resort because they wanted him to relax. All he did was work, they wanted him to meet women and maybe have a liaison with one or more of them. Conall had no intention of doing that he wanted to get through the week and get back to work, but then he saw Sage standing there watching him and his friends as they got out of the van.

Holiday Liaison was an excellent read, the characters were likeable and this reader enjoyed watching Conall and Sage’s love affair blossom. Their love developed slowly but it was a welcome change from stories that has the characters ‘hooking up’ after seeing one another from across a crowded room, not that there’s anything wrong with that. It was just a refreshing change especially since you knew that when they did get together it would be well worth the wait.

Even though this was a short story, the characters were very well developed even the supporting characters were fun to get to know, and they added to the story. I like that Sage didn’t have the typical office job and that she was a forest ranger which added to her appeal. A strong female character to match a strong male character makes the story interesting and memorable. Holiday Liaison can be read as a standalone but you will get more enjoyment out of it if you read the series, especially since Cynda Richmond the main character from O Come as well as Ryanne McCall the main character from Rekindling Christmas each meet and interact with Sage. So I recommend that you pick up all three books, sit in your favorite chair and surround yourself in the spirit of Christmas.
