Stories from one end of the universe to the other, and off into the realm of Faerie, too.

A collection of Fantasy and SF short stories. Space travel, time travel, aliens. Witches, wizards, ghosts, vampires. Oh, yes, and a bit of a look at what happens when the paranormal impinges on high school romance.

Here is an interesting collection of short stories that are sci fi/fantasy in nature. Mr. Hartley has a very good imagination and gives you a nice variety of stories with varied endings. They are exciting enough to keep your attention, quick to read, and leave you hungering for more.

He uses space travel, witches, wizards, time travel, aliens, even some ghosts and vampires in the stories. When you start a story you’re not sure who you are going to meet or what type of character they might be. Even if the one you start with is normal, you know a strange one is going to drop into the story soon.

My favorite stories were: Rain (an evil enchanted rain), The Ghost in the Bookstore (want to spend the afterlife in a shopping mall?), Too Damn Cold (it’s getting so cold they have to wear clothes), and The Letter (she knew very well where he lived but not when). These are nice example of the types of stories that live within this anthology.

I love the world of fantasy and none of these stories are alike. Each is walk in another world, with some humor, a bit of romance, a touch of horror, and even some irony. Mr. Hartley is comfortable with the short story form and can give you enough details and action to make the story complete in a few pages. His characters take from with a couple of paragraphs. I found all his stories fun to read and look forward to reading more of his work. He’s a good author, give him a try.

Rose Strickland is having a blue Christmas. Her friend is arrested for attempted murder, her sexy bad guy crush is marked by a hit man, and her boss is locked in an epic smackdown with a rival diner. Determined to save those she loves, Rose embarks on an investigation more tangled than a box of last year’s tree lights. With her eclectic gang at the ready, Rose stumbles across dead bodies, ex-cons, chop shops, jealous girlfriends, jilted lovers, and a gaggle of strippers in a battle for freedom she might not survive.

Read an exclusive excerpt from Last Diner Standing:

“Any other names you want to give me? What about Roshanda?”

“Asshat’s sister? I know she lives down by Oakwood Elementary, but I don’t have her address or anything.”

“Do you know who else Asshat was dating? Or Flat Ass’s name?”

He sighed. “I don’t keep track of his social life.” His eyes took in Roxy, from her platform Mary Janes to her blue hair. “I’m thinking about my own extra-curriculars.”

Tariq fenced stolen crap and Roxy used to be a juvenile delinquent. She still missed the thrill of taking things that weren’t strictly hers, so I wondered at the wisdom of this Tariq/Roxy matchup. It had fire and gasoline written all over it.

I shoved my hands in the pockets of my jacket and glanced at the gloomy sky once more. I was going to have to invest in some gloves.

“Thanks, Tariq.” I tugged on Roxy’s sleeve. “Call me if you think of anything that can help Janelle.” I pulled her toward the car and we waved at Tariq as I peeled out.

“Want to hit the strip club?” I asked. “I have just enough time before I have to get ready for my parents’ party.”

“Yep,” Roxy said. “So what are these Strickland shindigs like, anyway? Fancy food you can’t pronounce and champagne?”

“Pony kegs and beer bongs all the way.”

She snorted. “Yeah, I can picture your mom with a funnel tube in her mouth. Seriously, are they any fun at all?”

“Not even a little.”

Philip Thornton only wanted to help his frigid wife enjoy their marriage bed.

Lillian agreed, but once freed from her past, hadn’t expected such a fierce transformation.

Aria was paid to educate and entice, but what she found was more than she ever dreamed possible.

The Parisian Exposition of 1889…the world is changing and the three of them are caught in its whirl. Philip and Lillian went to Paris to save their marriage and to help Lillian overcome her fears. Aria danced and seduced Lillian, but before Lillian left, Aria found herself seduced, in turn, by the beautiful Englishwoman.

When Philip and Lillian break all the rules and escort Aria around Paris for a week, will it be the beginning of their future? Or will this seductive interlude be nothing more than a dream?

Philip wanted to help his wife warm to his touch, he never expected he’d be the one to get burned.

Philip and Lillian Thornton are newlyweds on their honeymoon in Paris. Philip had hoped that the sights and sounds of the French city would help Lillian loosen up when it came to their marriage bed. Their still cold marriage bed. Whenever Philip comes near or touches Lillian she freezes up and shuts down on him. At the end of his rope, Philip leaves his wife behind at the Parisian Exposition after she refuses to watch an erotic dance show with him. Little did he know that entering the tent would forever change his life.

Lillian loves her husband, but a tragic event in her past stops her from fully opening to Phillip and allowing their marriage to be consummated. Lillian offers to allow him to seek his pleasures elsewhere. But Phillip has other ideas for her and, desperate to please him, she agrees. Enter Aria, a paid companion who is part of the erotic dance group Phillip has seen earlier. After making an agreement with the madam, Lillian has been offered a stay with Aria and learn all the secrets to pleasure so she may return to her husband and be a proper wife.

Once Aria learns the reason behind Lillian’s behavior, the floodgates open and Lillian’s true passionate self shines through. Surprised at the change, both women find themselves lost in a haze of lust and eroticism. But eventually it’s time go back to the waiting husband to share her new findings, and Lillian can’t leave Aria behind. Once home, she begs Phillip to include Aria in their new love life to begin with. Though reluctant, he agrees to please his wife and when the three come together, the sparks fly and lust explodes. What Phillip never planned on were his feelings for the woman who helped bring out the Lillian he knew was hiding.

I’ll admit that while I am not an avid reader of girl on girl loving, this book and the scenes between the women were very sexy and sensual while being meaningful. I really enjoyed the relationship between the two, and then when Phillip came into the picture the dynamic changed yet remained the same. I think the author did a really good job of that. When the three were engaged with each other, you could feel the heat come off the page! Wow! The love scenes had an urgent, almost frantic tone to them. I’m not sure if it was intentional or not, but it worked. My only complaint is that I felt the characters were a little too thin for the depth of emotion we saw.

But overall, it was a very sexy read and I would suggestion a fan and ice water on hand when it’s read. The next in the series should be a fun, hot read, just as this was.

He’s sailed the seas for adventure…and found the sexiest one back at home.

Whispering Cove, Book 3

Danica Kent, MD, has settled into her new role as a small-town doctor. She caters to her Whispering Cove patients, especially the rum-drinking, poker-playing, town grandfathers who have their hands in a bit of everything. But when one of those patients brings her face-to-face with her high school crush, the work she’s done to reinvent herself falters.

Braydon Mitchell sails around the world writing freelance magazine articles. With no desire to settle down, he’s successfully avoided his grandfather’s pleas to come home…until now. Returning out of worry for the old man’s health, Braydon finds old friends in town for their high school reunion. And something he hadn’t expected. Danica, the awkward teenage geek who’s all grown up—and filled out in all the right places.

From their first touch, erotic sparks make Braydon want everything he isn’t built for—small-town stability, a strong woman’s love, family. And Danica wonders if Braydon has dropped anchor for good…or if her lover will be gone with the next tide.

Danica ‘Dani’ Kent has gone from geeky girl, crushing on the town hottie, to successful physician, caring for the townspeople. She spent lots of time changing her image, with a makeover and lots of hard work to become the respectable doctor. So, when globe trotting Braydon Mitchell shows up for their ten-year reunion, why does she still get tongue-tied and clumsy, unable to walk and talk at the same time?

Braydon’s job takes him around the world, writing magazine articles on sailing and traveling. Imagine his surprise when he discovers that the hot doctor taking care of his grandfather is the geeky girl who used to follow him around annoyingly, but now she’s a beautiful and mature woman he can’t stop imaging in all sorts of sexy daydreams. Can Dani get past her crush days and form an adult relationship with Braydon? Will Braydon be able to find the sensuous woman inside the doctor’s white coat? Does the relationship have a chance or are these two ships that will just pass each other?

Wicked is Nikki Duncan’s entry into the Whispering Cove series, and a hot one it is. I like that these three authors have managed to carry on the small town ambiance and draw the reader in for more each time. The character development continues to be excellent, and the interaction between the main characters and the secondary ones is a delight. I enjoy this world, and look forward to revisiting often. I also enjoyed that all three books take place at the same time, and we see the action in the other books from a different angle. It adds to the overall enjoyment of each one.

Danica ‘Dani’ Kent is smart, dedicated and strong willed. She decided to change what she didn’t like about herself, and has been successful in her chosen career. But she is horrified to discover that, at the first sight of Braydon, the geeky girl inside comes out, and she has to fight to maintain her composure around him. I enjoyed watching as she fought to remain in control and not backslide into geekdom here.

Braydon Mitchell has been gone from Whispering Cove for ten years. He is smart, handsome, and a successful writer, producing articles about sailing and travel for magazines. When he comes home for his ten-year reunion, he is happy to see his grandparents, but isn’t prepared for the doctor that cares for his grandfather to turn his head around. And to learn that she is Dani, the geek girl who crushed on him back in the day was a big shock. That girl was in no way the beautiful, sexy and secure woman he sees now. I enjoyed watching these two heat up the pages from the very beginning.

Wicked is the third book in the first Whispering Cove trilogy, and the heat is scorching in it. I love that the scheming senior citizens are so determined to see their grandchildren back in town, and settled with their true loves. In Wicked, Nikki Duncan has provided enough sparks to set the town ablaze, and it just makes this one hard to put down. Wicked is the perfect finish to the first three in this series, and no matter the reading order, Whispering Cove is definitely one hot town to visit. I will be going back soon, and taking lots of cold drinks and tissues with me.

In the heart of the redwoods, a madman waits…

Recovering from a broken engagement and determined to start over, Brooke Wakefield flees to her grandmother’s home deep in the redwood forest. Discovering her teenage crush lives next door is a less than auspicious beginning. The last thing she needs is another man to break her heart, but every time Dillon glances her way, her heat level soars.

Dillon Tremayne isn’t looking for a relationship. With a young son, an eccentric grandfather, and a logging company running him ragged, he can’t afford any romantic entanglements. But Brooke’s humor and strength are hard to resist.

When a woman from his past is brutally murdered and another disappears, Dillon is heartsick—and terrified the killer will target Brooke next. Can Brooke and Dillon find love in the heart of the forest? Or will a madman’s twisted dream destroy their chance at happiness?

Startled by a ghost-like woman in a long white nightgown running onto the road in front of her car, Brooke Wakefield crashes her car. Dillon Tremayne finds her semi-conscious and bloodied, her car a mangled wreck. A killer is holding women hostage, torturing them with a hunt-and-chase type game that fulfills the sickness within him. When Brooke captures his attention what started out as a chance to help her Grandmother out and get herself back together in the sleepy little town turns into a twisted game from her darkest nightmare.

An old-school style psychological thriller, this small-town book is full of interesting, well-written characters. The author has done an excellent job setting up the atmoshphere of an isolated, fog-filled, woodsy little town, the perfect setting for a crazed stalker/killer. But it’s the characters that really shine through. Full of quirks and life, I found myself second guessing everyone trying to work out the mystery and stay one step ahead of the killer. I’m pleased to say I only had mingled success, with quite a few interesting twists.

Not to be read on a cold, stormy night, this was scary enough to have me double checking the doors, but not gory enough to be horrible or over the top, it has a good balance. Dillon and Brooke certainly have chemistry, each is recovering from their own problems – Dillon from the tragic death of his late wife, Brooke from a broken engagement. The romantic pace between them is a realistic, gradual progression and the culmination of their desires is tastefully written.

An excellent find, I really enjoyed this book and would happily read more from this author.

Alex McMann is putting his MBA to good use running the business end of the construction company he owns with his brothers. He’s flown high and wide through the female segment of every geographic area in which the company has a presence, and now he’s ready at last to settle down. When he meets Olivia D’Angelo, CFO of one of their client companies, he’s sure he’s found The One.

Olivia is sharp, she’s smart, she’s sassy and she challenges him both in and out of the bedroom, where the sex is hot and plentiful. Just one problem. She has her own issues and isn’t looking for anything permanent. Alex has to convince her that he’s enough to satisfy her for the rest of her life!

Gorgeous CEO, Olivia insists on keeping her sexy business associate, Alex at arm’s length emotionally while fully enjoying her ‘sex only’ rule. Although he knows he wants so much more, the hopelessly smitten Construction Company owner agrees with her demands just to have the opportunity to be with her.

Alex immediately sees through Livy’s ‘shark’ persona to the vulnerable, soft hearted woman beneath the veneer. Livy is so afraid of love. Afraid of being hurt, as she was by her father. So she retreats into the safety of her armor, not even aware of her loneliness. When there is a frightening accident, Livy is forced to face her true feelings and Alex has his chance.

I enjoyed the way Ms. Holt revealed the true nature and feelings of her complex heroine in a believable and natural way, with the love of a beautiful and giving man as the agent of change. Livy’s awakening to herself and her love for Alex is transforming and powerful. While the sex is hot and steamy as always in a Desiree Holt story, the love affair takes center stage and left me wanting more.

This story was just slightly simpler than it could have been. The tale is ripe for further characterization of the lovers and I craved more. Other than that, I have only the highest recommendations for Hammered. If you like scorching hot love stories that warm your heart, you will love this one.

Julia Ramsey, an art restoration technician with Art Revived, has a weakness for coffee, beautiful art, and widowed Darius Holcombe. Her attraction doesn’t seem to be returned, however, and she self-consciously chalks it up to her plus-sized frame.

Darius Holcombe is finally starting to think about another woman for the first time since his wife passed away. Unfortunately, he doesn’t quite know what to do about it. Julia Ramsey is smart, gorgeous, and way out of his league.

A relationship seems hopeless until Julia meets Imogene and Herbert who offer sage advice and a little push in Darius’ direction. The trouble is they’re figures in an 18th century painting she’s restoring–a painting with a haunted past.

The Art of Falling in Love is a delightfully light-hearted paranormal romance. It is short and sweet and at times unrealistic, but then of course it is a paranormal.

J. D. Thompson’s writing is ‘bouncy’ for want of a better word.

Julia Ramsey, the author’s heroine is a down-to-earth kind of girl, easy to get along with and compassionate for friends who’ve suffered tragedy.

Darius Holcombe, a work colleague, fits that bill, but beyond the general office acknowledgements neither have spent much time in each others’ company. Not, that is, until their boss pairs them up to work together on the restoration of a painting he recently bought.

Ms. Thompson easily takes her readers into the minds of her characters and when ‘things’ begin to happen that cannot be rationally explained it didn’t take long for this reader to share the emotions of the author’s heroine, Julia.

If I had a nit with this story, it was the way Darius took off from work for hours on end without explanation. But that is a very small nit, when otherwise all the other characters played their parts so well and moved the story forward.

The author’s writing style is vivid and each scene, for me was easy to ‘see’.

If you enjoy light paranormal romance with an unusual if not unexpected twist, then this is a book to consider. If you are looking for a short and light-hearted romance you can read in one sitting, then The Art of Falling in Love should fit the bill.

From the wrong side of the tracks, Dominic Wright is fiercely proud of his successful career—and his latest project is his gateway to the big time! The downside? Dominic is expected to babysit the boss’s spoiled daughter.

Bella Maldini knows hotshot Dominic by reputation, and where women are concerned it’s a bad one! Still, if Bella wants this project to succeed she must work closely with Dominic. If only he weren’t so impossible—cynical, complicated, controlled—and, worst of all, sexier than any man she’s ever met!

Even if I had not read the front of the book, I would have known this was a Harlequin Romance. It had a solid plot and characters and a standard crisis. In this case, our characters are Bella and Dominic.

Bella, presents as the “flighty” daughter of the business owner. She is out to please her dad and prove once and for all that she is worthy of his love and a place in his company. Dominic is the young executive. He is hard working, and making a positive impression on his boss, Bella’s dad. Because he is a trusted employee, and gets results, he is entrusted with the project on which Dad places Bella. Because Dominic is determined “not to become his father”, he is very firm with Bella and refuses to see her creative side as an asset to the project.

As with all good Harlequins, they are thrown together. In this case, the company only has one apartment available to house the both of them during the project. This means they need to learn to work together. Oh, yes – there is also the addition of a cat.

They become accustomed to living and working together, each finding some good in each other until the crisis occurs, and changes the nature of the business and the working relationship.

As the crisis resolves, a new relationship occurs and we find the characters working towards the happily ever after.

Even though the story is basically laid out above, the beauty is in the details. For those of us with wanderlust, the story is set in Australia. But even with that, the story did not seem foreign. The aforementioned cat adds an interesting twist. Bella and Dominic aren’t all that they seem.

Speaking of Bella and Dominic. . . Bella, although she is constantly trying to get her father to approve of her, is an intelligent young woman. She knows what she wants to do, even though it isn’t necessarily something of which she feels Dad will approve.

Dominic, on the other hand, is fairer than he first appears. He never becomes the wishy-washy hero that has fallen in love, but again, does not remain the tough-as-nails boss who never shows his feelings until the very end. In that respect, he seems more real to this reader.

There is also a fair amount of humor added throughout. It added humanity to the characters and allows the reader to continue on!

In all, this story was exactly as promised – an enjoyable read. No twists and turns, but enough individuality in the characters to make the reading worthwhile.

There are worse things than death, worse people too

The “talk” was bad enough, but how many teens get told that they’re a goddess? When her mom tells her, Persephone is sure her mother has lost her mind. It isn’t until Boreas, the god of winter, tries to abduct her that she realizes her mother was telling the truth. Hades rescues her, and in order to safely bring Persephone to the Underworld he marks her as his bride. But Boreas will stop at nothing to get Persephone. Despite her growing feelings for Hades, Persephone wants to return to the living realm. Persephone must find a way to defeat Boreas and reclaim her life.

Can Hades really be a hero? The answer lies within the pages of Persephone.

I absolutely love Greek Mythology. When I came across Persephone, I was immediately intrigued. After reading the blurb, I had high expectations and Ms. Bevis certainly lived up to them. Ms. Bevis’ interpretation of the story of Persephone and Hades is very appealing, and she also does an excellent job of working the Greek gods and goddesses into a modern setting seamlessly. I think it is very interesting that the gods and goddesses keep insisting they aren’t human. However, their thoughts, actions, mistakes, and vulnerabilities make them much more “human” then they’d like to admit.

Persephone is a very relatable and well rounded character. I think her initial disbelief and subsequent meltdown after finding out she’s a goddess is completely normal. Even though she finds out she’s up against gods much stronger than her, I really liked that she didn’t just sit back and let others handle the problem. She takes a very active role in learning how to develop her powers and defend herself. Persephone really blossoms and begins to grow into her full powers throughout the book. It was a pleasure watching her change from a girl into a mature young woman. I have no doubt she’ll be very powerful when she learns how to control all her abilities.

Toward the end of the book, Persephone is forced to make some tough choices when her best friend is in danger. Rather than waiting for someone else to solve the problem, Persephone takes matters into her own hands. While I admire her strength and determination, I think some of the choices she makes will have negative repercussions that she’ll be forced to deal with later.

Hades is definitely not the typical god of the underworld. I’d say most people, like Persephone, have preconceived notions of what type of person, or rather god, Hades would be. Many of the typical assumptions do not hold true in this tale. Hades genuinely cares about the souls inhabiting the underworld and tries to make sure everyone is taken care of and in their proper place. However, Hades does have a darker side that flares to life when he’s angered or those he cares about are in danger. His treatment of an intruder who dares to attack Persephone is particularly frightening.

The twist at the end of Persephone is wonderful. Just when things seem to be wrapping up nicely, Ms. Bevis threw in a complication. Alarm bells should have been going off in my head concerning a particular event and trusted character, but like Persephone, I was completely floored when she realized what had happened. I’m looking forward to finding out how Persephone handles this situation and can’t wait until the next story is released.

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read Persephone. I loved getting to know Persephone and Hades, and I’m craving the next installment in the series. Fans of young adult romance and Greek mythology definitely need to check out Persephone today.

Garet loses his temper and kills a demon. The demonbanes come to search for the one beat the demon fear and offer him the chance to become one of their own. Garet’s new life starts here.

Demons breed fear in any humans they come near, then feed off that fear to make themselves strong. Now there is a new demon, the type of which has never been seen before, as well as political intrigue within the king’s court. Only the demonbane can protect mankind, but the demonbane have their own in-house fighting to sort out before they can save the city.

Garet has a natural ability when it comes to fighting demons and he picks up knowledge at a phenomenal rate which pleases some of his masters, but angers others.

This book reminded me of David Eddings fantasy series. The author has taken a great deal of trouble to ensure the continuity of the story is correct. The planet is well thought out and I felt as if I could step across the dimensions and be at home there. I saw no editing errors at all and the story locked together superbly. Can you tell I really enjoyed this book?

I love fantasy books but haven’t read one of this quality for some time. There is a little bit of romance in it, but the fighting of demons and Garet’s emergence from a gawky country boy to a young man skilled in the fighting of demons is the mainstay of the book. I could go on and on about how I liked it, but that wouldn’t necessarily encourage a fantasy reader to try it. I will say if you like fantasy, you shouldn’t miss this one. Take the plunge and give it a try. It will knock your socks off!
