Everything was supposed to work out. They had the dragon under control, they were back with the mercenaries – things were supposed to be good now. That was the plan. Then word of plague in Katsu’s country arrives, and with it knowledge that will shatter everything Ashe thought he knew about his lover.

When Katsu has to make a choice between Ashe or sailing overseas to a country that abandoned him to save a beloved sister—Well, some choices are harder than others. Some are nearly impossible to make.

Ashe, an elf, and his human lover, Katsu are travelling to catch up with Ashe’s mercenary group and chosen family, when Katsu all but falls over a woman from his homeland. Ashe discovers there is far more to Katsu than he previously knew about. Katsu’s parents need help but are too proud to mend bridges and ask for it.

This is a book within a series and although I haven’t read any of the previous ones I managed to keep up quite well. Despite the title, the dragon appeared more of a familiar/separate part of Ashe and a small part of the book as a whole. Ashe and Katsu’s relationship deepens and this book is predominantly character driven, almost a stepping stone between what seems to be the last battle and an oncoming challenge. This book has set up the future of the series quite well.

I found Ashe and Katsu to be deeply complex characters and extremely interesting. While the sex was hot and intense, it also was quite a small part of the story as a whole. Although set in an alternate world, the Sci Fi/Fantasy aspect wasn’t overwhelming, and the world was richly described. At heart this book was about the blossoming depth of Ashe and Katsu, as they fall more in love, and trust one another with their secrets and bare their souls to each other. I really enjoyed seeing this and was pleased neither character was overly charming/perfect – they each have their faults and still work well and realistically together. Their love is genuine and their issues easy to relate to. I really enjoyed this book.

His Family or His Heart — One of Them Will Be Betrayed…

Ian MacGregor is wooing a woman who’s wrong for him in every way. As the new Earl of Balfour, though, he must marry an English heiress to repair the family fortunes.

But in his intended’s penniless chaperone, Augusta, Ian is finding everything he’s ever wanted in a wife.

A story of love, not just the usual love story,The Bridegroom Wore Plaid teems with vibrant characters. Some are heartwarming; others steal one’s breath away, while others give that “feel-good” charm that makes one happy to share in their experience. Conversely, one particular character raises the hackles of even the most tolerant.  He is an antagonist that one could really learn to hate.

With just enough history to show how the desperation and mindset of the characters came to be, the story comes alive with characters using all the means at their disposal to secure what is most important to them.

The writing flows along like music with four haunting beautiful themes of love, two themes with a strong beat of loyalty and steadfastness, and then there is a low, grumbling theme that would overridden all if allowed. Grace Burrowes enchants with metaphors that help the reader feel the pressing despair of need; the pure joy of true, giving love; the humor that delights; and the tenacious courage that keeps on keeping on.

The arranged marriage plan seems to stick in the craw of everyone but the Baron of Altsax and Gribbony. He really doesn’t care how anybody feels or whether they get hurt so long as he gets what he wants and gets it quickly.

Ian MacGregor, the “almost” Earl of Balfour plans to sacrifice his own desire for a love marriage to insure the future security of his family and clan. His sense of honor and family duty rules his actions. Never again does he want to see his own in need or near starvation.

Augusta Merrick, the Baron’s niece, arrives on the scene with all the trapping of an eccentric spinster, cat and all. Her metamorphosis, or maybe better her reawakening, is a lilting note throughout the story. The relationship she has with the intrepid little, red-haired Fiona is a kindred-soul connection that Ms. Burrowes lets the reader share in marvelous ways. After many years of subsistence living, Augusta dances again. She makes Ian MacGregor feel like he is dancing with music in his arms. Augusta loves Ian MacGregor but she knows he feels he must marry for money; so she will do whatever it takes to insure he is happy.

Gil and Connor, Ian’s brothers, work just as hard as Ian to rebuild the Earldom but they abhor the idea of Ian marrying for money. They realize it would make him feel like “a neutered Scottish hound on a short English leash”. But they persevere with Cupid giving them no rest. Secrecy and high, often strained, emotions run rampant.

Ian’s sister Mary Frances, a widow and mother of Fiona, is a formidable, beautiful woman who runs Balfour with efficiency. She may order everyone about and scold, but she loves her family and her loyalty is unfailing, without measure. Her personal life is somewhat of a wreck, but quietly tiptoes in for her.

How these MacGregor siblings get paired off with the “paying guests” from England is fantastic reading. The Baron, Willard Daniels, is bound and determined that his oldest daughter Eugenia will marry Ian for a title when all she wants is to marry for love. Hester the Baron’s younger daughter really is more interested in getting back to London Society than anything else. One of the chaperones, Mrs. Julia Redmond, a widow, is struggling with loneliness and is hard pressed to do chaperone duty when she has found something far more interesting to do. Augusta, the Baron’s disenfranchised niece, is blooming in Scotland and is escaping all kinds of dangers. A quiet and seemingly afterthought is Matthew Daniels, the Baron’s son, who is a disappointment to the Baron. He has gone into “the trades” that is far beneath his station in life according to the Baron. He seems so inconsequential. Or is he?

The plot moves along apace with complicated sub-plots and humorous asides. They keep the action lively and charged with strong emotions as the main plot keeps things tense and edgy much of the time. Of course, those Highlander MacGregor men—gorgeous and to-die-for lovers—can make one almost forget the plot at times.

The shining, exquisite jewels of the story are the love scenes that range from frolicking fun to the soul-mate, magical, joyous love that defeats conscience and common sense so that unquenchable “happy-ever-afters” come to reign.

Grace Burrowes steps out of the Regency Era into the Victorian Age with an awesome tale. She makes the story magical with her eloquent writing style that is lyrical and full of poignant metaphors. It touches the heart and lingers. The Bridegroom Wore Plaid is a rich, emotion-filled tale to be enjoyed more than once.

‘Top or Bottom?’ by Desiree Holt

When you think something is missing from your BDSM relationship, maybe it’s time to ask ‘top or bottom?’

Both Keith and Shea were looking for something a little different in the BDSM world. Their chance meeting in an adult toy store gave them the opportunity to switch for an afternoon.

But when their playtime was over, would they be fulfilled? And could they go back to their normal roles or would they still crave something more?

Reader Advisory: This book contains active BDSM play and a high degree of smuttiness.

‘Mastering Maya’ by Lisabet Sarai

Behind the mask of control hides a spirit aching to surrender.

Mistress Maya bears the nickname ‘The Ice Queen’. Her precision in administering discipline, her skill in evoking a submissive’s devotion, and her unshakable self-control are legendary in the small but active Boston kink community.

From the moment newcomer Master Shark sees Maya flogging a sub at Club Inferno, he’s obsessed with her beauty and power. He’d determined to break through her defenses and bring her the same release she grants to the lucky slaves she tops. When Maya dismisses Shark as young and inexperienced, he offers her a challenge: a night together, during which he’ll show her what it means to be mastered. If he fails to bring her to new heights of sensation, he agrees to become her slave.

What begins as a test of wills evolves into something deeper and more intense. As the younger man uses his insight and skill to coax Maya into submission, he comes to understand the wounded spirit hiding behind her mask of control. Can he make Maya trust him enough to surrender? Or will the flawless, untouchable dominatrix take possession of his body as well as his heart?

Reader Advisory: This book contains references to gang-rape and the ignoring of a safe word, which take place prior to the start of the book. It also contains scorching scenes of D/s and pain play.

‘Wagers of Sin’ by Elizabeth Coldwell

Selina will never be a true dominant until she learns to submit…and Marcus bets he can show her how.

Selina prides herself on her skills as a dominatrix, with a string of pretty slave boys as her lovers. But these affairs never last, and her equally dominant best friend, Marcus, knows she needs something more. He claims she’ll never be a true dominant until she learns what it means to submit, and during a day at the races, he offers her a wager to prove it. If his horse wins, she must submit to him for a month. If it loses, he’ll switch and become her slave.

When the horse takes first place, Selina’s world is turned upside down. Mistress becomes servant, as Marcus puts her through her paces, issuing instructions she’s forced to obey and making her endure the most public of punishments. But Selina can’t deny she loves the feeling of submitting to her gorgeous friend, even as he tests her to her limits. She might have lost the bet, but has she won the love of a true master?

Reader Advisory: This book contains anal play and all the excitement of a day at the races!

‘Still The One’ by Wendi Zwaduk

She’ll be his salvation if he’s willing to switch.

Being stressed out sucks, especially when you’re in charge of a team. Just ask Eric Trask. The pit crew of the Fifty-Four truck team depends on him. The stress of keeping things running smoothly is wearing Eric down. What’s a guy to do to get a little relief?

Janine Walters knows exactly what Eric’s up against. She’s the public relations face of the team. Pressure is all a part of the job. Her outlet for stress just happens to be wielding a crop.

Can Eric embrace her methods for stress relief or will her suggestion tear their fragile relationship apart?

Reader Advisory: This book contains the use of a crop, spanking, a little bondage, a little pegging, some toys and a woman who knows how to use a strap on to pleasure her man.

‘Switching Off’ by Amy Valenti

With his collar around her throat and her pulse pounding through her body, can she switch off enough to submit to his every whim?

Nina loves her job in middle management—her dominant personality and organisational skills make her indispensable to her employers. But, when her boss puts too many demands on her department, she finds it impossible to leave her job at her desk and enjoy her weekend with her sexy best friend, Jon.

When Jon takes away her phone and tells her she’s not allowed to check her emails until Monday morning, Nina challenges his right to order her around. His response is to kiss her into silence, then to order her to her knees. What’s even more startling is that Nina finds herself obeying—though not without a fight.

Can Jon succeed in getting Nina to switch off her managerial self as well as her phone? Or will she safeword before she can reach the sublime subspace he’s promised to guide her into?

Reader Advisory: This book contains BDSM play and a woman who shirks her duties at work for a kinky two-hour lunch tryst—shocking!

‘Who Compels My Strength’ by Lauren Gallagher

‘Can switching roles restore their confidence in their Dom/sub relationship, or are these doubts happening for a reason?

After some seemingly open-minded friends turn up their noses at Bridget and Ian’s kinky lifestyle, both start having doubts of their own. Ian wonders if he truly is mistreating his wife, and Bridget can’t shake her friend’s accusation that she’s a wimp and a doormat for letting her husband beat her.

To put their worries to bed, Bridget and Ian switch roles. Tonight, she’s in charge, and they’re each walking in the other’s shoes.

But what happens if those shoes don’t fit?

Reader Advisory: This book contains Dominance/submission, pain play (nipple clamps, flogger)

Turning the tables in a BDSM relationship can get a bit dicey, but isn’t that part of the fun?

The six stories in this collection are seductive and show how delicious it can be to change roles for a night, or longer. There aren’t that many books that delve into the charged role of a switch. The ability to move back and forth between the Dominant and submissive role is exhilarating and each of these stories comes across in a different way. Part of the mystique of BDSM is the dynamic of the power exchange. What makes a top a top and a bottom a bottom? In this collection, you find your own boundaries tested as you experience situations that will have you squirming in your seat.

Top or Bottom by Desiree Holt is the first piece in the collection and the imagery was amazing. Being in an adult toy store and striking up a conversation with another customer and having things move in a kinky direction was oh so delicious. This story was the perfect beginning to the book and brought you places I was longing to go, only I didn’t know it. Hurray for the special twist at the end. No, I am not telling…You have to read this one to ferret out the hidden delights for yourself. Trust me. It will be worth it.

Mastering Maya is the second story and at once, I was captivated by Lisbet Sarai’s vision. Maya is a Domme that stays detached from her subs during dungeon play and feels the eyes of a new Dom watching from the audience. The magnetism and pride take them both in interesting directions. The name, Master Shark, was different, but it didn’t change the way I felt about the story. It was hot. The building tension between the two characters was fire hot and when they ended up at opposite ends of the flogger, things sizzled and popped.

Wagers of Sin is the third piece and Elizabeth Coldwell does an excellent job of teasing the senses with her description of a Dom having the tables turned on him and the sub taking the reins. I eagerly turned the pages on this one and could not get enough of her descriptive style.

Still the One is the fourth story by Wendy Zwaduk. This story was a little different as it has a setting in the racing world and not in the usual bondage situations. Here you have a man stressed out of his mind and erupting after his promotion into the job of manager. His friend has a suggestion that will blow his mind in more ways than one and we are happily along for the ride. This is an original story and a bit lighter than some of the other reads in this collection, but the application is still the same. Boy, isn’t it nice to see the tables turned and oh what a relief it can be.

Switching Off is story number five. It is penned by Amy Valenti and as with anything I have ever read by this author, it gets right into hot sex scenes and some pretty interesting predicaments. Management is stressful. No doubt about it. How wonderful that our heroine Nina has a Dom in the closet friend in Jon who can help her with her little problem. And take her in hand he does. Nina was a bit of a pill at first, but as Jon works her into submission, I found myself sighing contentedly wishing I could borrow him for awhile.

Who Compels My Strength is the last piece and was written by Lauren Gallagher. I enjoyed this story. What if you thought you knew somebody and had sort of, well, slept with their husband a few times in a swinger kind of way and all of a sudden they judge you for your kinky ways? People are funny. It happens all the time. When Bridget and Ian are left feeling bewildered after their dinner date goes off kilter, Bridget has a plan to turn the tables to see things from the other side of the whip so to speak. This story was imaginative and really led you into what it feels like to hold a Dom in your clutches and have your wicked way with him. Seriously. I was half taking notes.

These stories are perfect for readers of BDSM erotic fiction that want a bit of a change. It was great to see the tables turned on Doms/Dommes and see the other side of the coin is just as shiny. Absolutely stunning with imagery, sex scenes, dialog and overall emotional draw for the reader, this book has some great scenarios. The only points in the book that bothered me at all were very minor. Master Shark as a character name in Mastering Maya and Nina’s attitude in Switching Off, but neither of those things made any impact (with a flogger or otherwise) on my extreme savoring of this collection.

If you are game for a bit of a different flick of the wrist, try this collection. You won’t be disappointed. It is one of my favorite reads lately.

Seeking sanctuary could be the hottest mistake she ever made.

The TripleHorn Brand, Book 1

A lifetime ago, Zuri Prescott kicked the dirt off her boots and ditched her small-time small town for the glam city life—and lived to regret it. When she’s framed for a bank job, she lights out for home, seeking refuge with her old high school sweetheart while she figures out her next steps. Only she discovers that the boy she left behind is the last man she should trust.

Sheriff Colt Triplehorn knows trouble when he sees it, especially when it comes in the form of a familiar trespasser, caught naked between an angry bull and her underwear. Sure she’s up to her usual no good, he grants her sanctuary at his ranch—the better to keep an eye on her, and purge her from his system once and for all.

Reconnection is sweet and hot, but the heat can’t hide the truth. When Colt inevitably finds out what Zuri’s running from, it’s too late to put the fire out, and he’s got a career-compromising choice on his hands. Follow the letter of the law, or follow his heart.

A small town, the town’s golden boy, and a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, can only amount to trouble especially when love is involved.

Zuri’s middle name should have be trouble. From early on, people misunderstood her and judged her by the actions of her stepfather. They thought she was trouble and either kept their distance while whispering bad things about her behind her back or boys only wanted to get in her pants because they thought she was easy. She was a loner, but not by choice. Except there was one cowboy who refused to leave her alone even after she refused him. After finally giving in to his charms, Zuri started realizing that with him is where she belonged, but she was unsure if he felt the same. On a day that should have otherwise been a happy one for a couple of teenagers in love, Zuri finally receives the answer she’d been waiting for. Now it’s been twelve years since she last saw Colt Triplehorn, but their reunion may be too little too late.

Colt’s future changed dramatically the day Zuri walked out of his life. The hopeful young man he was grew up into the hardened sheriff he is now. Although he hasn’t seen her in a long time, Zuri still influences his life. From his mood right down to his sex life, or lack thereof, and even his brothers have taken notice. It’s Colt’s job to maintain order in the small town of Caldera and work the family ranch, but there’s something missing in his orderly life. That something appears one-day butt naked and bringing a whirlwind of trouble with her except this time, they are playing by Colt’s rules. Too many misunderstandings and hurt feelings still stand in the way, but their physical attraction and chemistry is undeniable. Colt will get his answers and Zuri will get hers, but at what cost when a robbery, a stalker, and mistrust all stand in the way?

This first in The TripleHorn Brand series, is fun, fast paced, and full of cowboy goodness! It was great to read the heroine taking the troublemaking lead in the story and give the hero a run for his money in getting her out of it. I figured that with how Zuri grew up she would be a bit harder and much more independent especially when it came to her reunion with Colt, maybe even make him work for it a little more, but that just wasn’t the case. They both have things to atone for in their relationship, but Zuri almost immediately hands over control to him and that I just couldn’t connect with. The history on their individual backgrounds and relationship is somewhat sparse, but eventually came together by the end. I was looking forward to reading more about Colt’s brothers, but not much is given on them, which of course has me searching out the next in the series.

Although each of the scenes ended somewhat abruptly, the story kept right on progressing and made it engaging to read. The sex scenes are plentiful and vital to the emotional growth of the couple, but also extremely steamy and well worth the read. I would definitely recommend this to fans of alpha male cowboys with big appetites in and out of the bedroom!

Gnipper is an eight year old gnomish scientist trying hard to earn the community’s respect for her work. She just needed an idea that could benefit everyone and now she has it- she’s going to create a growth serum to fix the gnome’s height issues. Everything is great until she decides to test her product on Chloe, the queen of her fire ant farm. Now she needs to act quickly or the entire community is about to be destroyed by twenty pound, angry insects. Can she save Rosehaven from another one of her mishaps?

Gnit-Wit Gnipper is back and she’s still facing some challenges if she wants to get a real hat instead of a frying pan for her head…

This author has a great imagination and writes a silly, busy story that should grab young ones’ attention and keep them reading to the end. Everything Gnit-Wit does seems to evolve into big trouble. You find yourself waiting to see just how things are going to turn out this time.

All she wants is a cookie. How could trying to reach where the cookies are stored cause a problem? Well, it can if you try to create a growth potion you can use to reach up there and manage to test a drop on your fire ant queen. The potion DOES work and now you have a monster aunt who happens to be pregnant!

T J Lanz’s world of gnomes is fun to visit. Everyone seems to be a bit crazy. Gnit-Wit’s Granny can fly (her plane is out of this world), and her friend, Sam, is part human and part squirrel. With characters like these and a BIG ant that is going to hatch thousands of babies shortly, the action picks up and races through the short story.

Any child who likes silliness, has a good imagination or would just like to be surprised by how a story will enjoy this one. It’s a fast read that could easily work into a fantastic conversation about the things your own child can imagine. Why not let them write their own story and read it to you? I’m sure this author would be pleased to know that his/her work has created another fantasy story.

Throughout the ages, they have been worshipped as gods, demigods, angels, or demons for the sexual powers they possess. They are supernatural seduction artists accustomed to absolute power over the flesh and mortals are their playthings.

A former pagan god, temporarily calling himself Fryar Grimsson until he chooses a new identity for this age, knows what to expect from his toys, having experienced all personalities over the years. But during a routine acquisition of a spirited mortal woman, he suddenly finds himself making mistake after mistake, since the extremely inhibited female doesn’t respond as planned. Overjoyed with the discovery of a real treasure, for he’s not been surprised in a very long time, he keeps her at his side as a curiosity, a momentary diversion until a better game comes along.

But too late he recognizes his biggest blunder. The longer he associates with this rare individual, the more he learns about her, and the more she takes a hold of his heart. In time, he becomes just as much her captive as she is his. As this very jaded and self-centered immortal sorts through feelings he’s never personally experienced before, he finds himself as much of a virgin to love’s influence as his hostage.

An immortal with the capacity to love or is he just kidding himself?

I’ve read quite a few paranormal stories and lots involving vampires. This one threw me for a loop. The concept is intriguing. Fryar feeds off humans giving in to their inhibitions. He wants them to be bad and go with their innate sexual feelings. Its interesting in a devil-made-me-do-it sort of way and I was interested enough in the unique idea to read this.

This is where I’m confused. I wanted to like both Fryar and Deana. And being a romance, I expected them to have a happily ever after. I didn’t get that with this book. There’s a disconnect. The feelings aren’t so much of love and romance, but more sexual attraction. And for a book to be labeled as sensual, I never expected to see a particular word for women’s genitals in it. I’m sure some readers wouldn’t be expecting it as well and might object. Maybe labeling it “hot” instead of sensual would work better, especially with the focus on sex.

Another thing that detracted from the read was the many editing errors. Just a little more work and this could be a tighter, more exciting work. There are areas where the story is told to me rather than being shown to me and quite a few times where the words weren’t spelled correctly.  I wanted to like this book, but when I struggled to get into it, that made the read more difficult.

But I have to say I did enjoy Deana. She is a good foil for Fryar. She’s everything he wants, but just a tad out of reach.  If you want a paranormal with provocative overtones and a unique plot twist, then this might be the read for you.  The author certainly shows promise with her interesting take on vampires.

Evie Caldwell hates her life. Five years ago, she gave up college and her dream of teaching to care for her ailing mother. Now, she’s trapped taking care of her worthless brother and the family ranch. Waiting tables to earn her way out of Texas, the last thing she wants is a muscleman with a macho Marine attitude complicating her life. But, oh, how that man makes her insides melt.

Wounded vet Win Fairchild returns to Texas to heal, find a piece of his soul, and open a ranch for amputee children. Finding someone to love is not on his agenda. But when he starts work at the Lonesome Steer Honky Tonk, a spitfire with violet eyes and a major attitude instantly captures his heart.

Evie just wants to escape, but now that Win knows what he wants, can he convince Evie to stay in Texas—and his bed?

Those Violet Eyes is one of the better surprises that’s happened to me in my reading life. Because the story is based in a small town in which the hero arrived on a motorcycle (Harley), I expected something completely different. Also because of the setting, I anticipated a gallery of meddling secondary characters. And, since the hero arrived on a Harley I expected that he would be portrayed as a saver of a fragile virgin heroine (something like a new version of the Prince in Shining Armor). But, as I said, I was more than pleasantly surprised.

Those Violet Eyes is great story, with wonderfully strong characters. The book is focused on the relationship between Evie and Win, and because they are both strong, independent and real, it has its ups and downs. In the end they accept one another with all their strengths and weaknesses and they end up supporting each other. Both the heroine and hero have one feature or trait that the author could have misused to turn them into whining and pathetic characters. Instead, she turned their weaknesses into their strengths.

Evie, the heroine, is torn between leaving the town to lead her own life and honor bound to take care of her brother. Certainly, that does not make her a weak character. She is maybe torn but she knows what she wants. All she needed was just a small push in the right direction in order to make the decision that was right for her.

Win, the hero, is a war veteran who has PTSD and is missing a leg. He does not see himself as a disabled person, on the contrary he is the one who is pushing Evie into that right direction, while she is the one who is soothing him when he has nightmares. What I particularly loved about the story is that the heroine’s virginity is not the central issue or conflict of the relationship between the heroine and hero. There are no meddling secondary characters so Evie and Win totally carry the story.

Those Violet Eyes is not a light read because the author effectively portrayed the aftermath of the atrocities of war on war veterans. The story also contains some scenes of war violence. Regardless of this Those Violet Eyes is a really satisfying emotional read that I highly recommend.

Beach volleyball player Sam Waterson knows he made a mistake–a really big one–three years ago when paparazzi interrupted his jubilant celebration with sexy Carlos Delacruz, the love of Sam’s life, and with their ménage partner Drew Eversly…and Sam blamed the public exposure on the wrong man. But fate has given him a second chance to prove his prowess on the sun-baked beach volleyball court and at loving the sensual man who has unknowingly held his heart. Can he–or Carlos or Drew–win a spot on the team? But even beyond sweating it out on the court and regaining the spot they had to forfeit three years ago, can Sam win back Carlos’s heart? Sam needs to show Carlos that he can spike and score where it counts…between the sheets.

Sam Waterson can’t quite get Carlos Delacruz or Andrew Eversly out of his system. After a particularly good day of volleyball trials the three men had partied on the sand, only to be interrupted by the tabloids. Thrown out of the trials, his family upset by all the media coverage, Sam went back to Montana, hoping to forget California and the two men he wanted more than anything. Now offered a second chance three years later, Sam is hoping not only to make the team, but reignite things between himself, Carlos and Drew. While Carlos and Drew are more than happy to pick up where they left off sexually, trusting Sam with their hearts and emotions comes a lot slower. So Sam determined to try and prove himself to the men, not willing to let them slip through his fingers a second time.

This is a steamy, sporty short story. The action is all-male, with a good balance between sexy M/M/M action and the politics and competitive nature of high-level sport. I liked how the villain was all bad –completely irredeemable. I also really enjoyed how the guys didn’t just fall over each other and forget their past. It added depth to the story and made it far more than just a delicious romp between team-mates. The sex scenes were well written and highly sensual. This is an excellent quick read for a sporty weekend.

Two years after their parent’s death, siblings Cassie and John Sullivan’s lives are starting to get back to normal in their hometown of Hazelhurst, Georgia. Cassie goes to school with her friends and boyfriend while John works to put food on the table. But their world is turned upside down when a virus that is threatening civilization as we know it breaks out across America. When John hears of a place in California that is supposed to be protected from the infection, they take off with the one hope they have. While heading for their safe haven, John and Cassie’s lives change forever.

Do you know how to survive a zombie apocalypse?

Cassie is intelligent, level-headed and reacts quickly in even the most unexpected situations. When she drives into a seemingly abandoned town her vehicle is suddenly surrounded by zombies. Despite not having a driver’s license she out manoeuvres them and delivers all of her passengers to safety. This was by far my favourite scene in the book because it was such a tantalizing glimpse into the woman she will evolve into as a result of her experiences in a post-apocalyptic world.

Ms. Harwood’s interpretation of what a zombie is and how it behaves is a little out of the ordinary for the genre. This decision breathes new horror into some of the scenes and moral dilemmas that zombie fans have learned to anticipate.

John and Cassie are too trusting for two people described as knowledgable about zombie movies. While it comes from a good place, their willingness to help others is somewhat out of place in a world where surviving is already so difficult. As much as I admire their altruism it would have been more realistic for them to temper that urge over time as they realize how dangerous day-to-day life remains even long after the outbreak began. With that being said they are two people I’d love to run into in the event of a disaster. The world would be a much better place if everyone shared their moral code.

I would have also preferred to learn more about a guy named Paul who is introduced a little later on in the plot. What we are told about his background is almost as interesting as the questions that aren’t answered and it would have been simple to include this information in the conversations the main characters share or as a flashback.

While working on this review I learned that Kelsey Harwood wrote Still Alive when she was just fifteen years old. There’s definitely something to be said for young adult novels written by people in that demographic! Ms. Harwood’s knowledge of teenage slang and culture shines through in the dialogue and I’m looking forward to what she comes up with next. This would be a good choice for reluctant readers in particular as it’s a fast-paced, action-heavy tale that spends a minimum amount of time on characterization before the plot thickens.

Petty thieves Kean and Ozzy are recruited by an eccentric collector to smuggle outlawed treeware. When the pickup goes wrong, they are hunted through the streets of Morocco. Running for their lives, they discover what lengths each will go to to save the other.

When physical books are outlawed only outlaws will own them.

As children, Ozzy and Kean forged a bond so deep that as young adults they almost seem to share the same mind. When I started reading I honestly didn’t know if I’d like these characters because our moral codes are so dissimilar. They’re career criminals who will break almost any law if it benefits them or someone they love and I’ve never even had a traffic ticket. No sooner does the plot pick up speed, though, than the reader learns about a dark secret that one of them has hidden from the other. The exploration and aftermath of this secret humanizes a terrible decision and drew me even further into their world.

I would have liked to see a more detailed explanation for why the Central Information Council transitioned from preserving paper books to banning them. What could make a benevolent organization evolve totalitarian tendencies so rapidly? For what purpose was this change introduced? As much as I enjoyed learning what happened to Kean and Ozzy not having these questions answered was disappointing. There were also some paragraphs in the story that were a little hard to understand due to multiple punctuation errors.

The end of this tale was fairly predictable for the genre but it did leave ample room for a sequel. We say goodbye to Ozzy and Kean while they transition from finding answers to questions that have plagued them for a long time to encountering brand new challenges. While I don’t know if the author intends to revisit these characters I’m curious to know what happens to them next.

Despite these issues Kean’s Edge introduced me to a world I won’t soon forget. Imagine a society that so fears the written word it is attempting to stamp it out. Is it better to try to move elsewhere or fight for lasting change from within? Are these your only options? Why not read this book and find out!
