After giving up on her Ph.D., Shannon Fairchild, a brilliant but alienated young woman, has settled into an unambitious life cleaning the homes of the wealthy. The sudden and horrific murder of her parents, both respected academics, leads her to discover that they were part of the radical anti-war movement of the 1960s and to suspect that their killer’s motive may lie in their past. She soon finds that they were friends of Diana Burke and John Paul West, two of America’s most wanted fugitives, anti-war militants who went underground after a fatal bombing in 1968 and never resurfaced.

Propelled by her mother’s dying words – “Find them and warn them” – Shannon sets out on a mission to track down the couple and tell them that someone is after them – someone much more dangerous than the FBI. Her search, which begins in California and ranges through much of western America, takes her into unexplored territory as she discovers an unexpected personal connection to Burke and West. As she unearths long-buried secrets while trying to stay one step ahead of a shadowy killer, she feels the passions of the tumultuous Sixties being reborn, and she now knows that nothing is more dangerous than someone willing to die for a cause.

Just when Shannon thinks that she’s about to get it all together, tragedy strikes and sends her running up along the west coast in search of answers to questions she didn’t even know she should be asking. With nothing more to go on than her mother’s dying words, she drops everything to go in search of a couple she’s never met. What she’s about to find along the way will change her forever.

Shannon Fairchild is an extremely complex character and one I wasn’t sure I was going to like at all in the very beginning. She has more issues than any one woman needs, to be honest. As the story progresses, however, she lets go of her biggest vice, and really grows as a character. Seeing this made me very happy because it would have been entirely too easy to let her wallow in the depths of budding alcoholism and anger management issues. Shannon turned out to be not just a likable character, but a very relatable one as well.

An interesting twist to this novel, I found, was the links to the protests over the Vietnam War. Being a huge lover of history and historical novels in general, knowing that some of the major players in this story were involved in such a major historical event engaged my curiosity even more. Little things like that really bring a story to life for me, making it more real and relatable.

From Blood is an intense story laced with mystery, rebellion, and hard truth. With a plot that keeps you guessing, you can’t help but be carried along with Shannon and her crew as she flies from city to city, state to state, in an attempt to find them and warn them, whomever they might be. What – and who – she finds takes her quite by surprise. And could quite possibly destroy everything she’s ever known or loved.

Love makes your pulse race, but passion can kill…

murder, passion, suspense…

Dr. Elizabeth Iverson’s career is on track. She’s just landed the enviable position as lead cardiologist at a prestigious Chicago heartcare center working under a renowned cardiovascular surgeon. But her plans for a quiet, controlled life are shattered when she discovers her college roommate murdered in her apartment. When her former lover, FBI Special Agent Drake McGuire, shows up on her doorstep with the cops, he unleashes a storm in her heart that further threatens to destroy her world, especially when he insists on hanging around to help solve the case when it becomes apparent that Elizabeth was the intended target for murder!

Elizabeth’s patients put their lives in her hands, but what happens when her own life is in danger?

Elizabeth is definitely someone who likes to have things under control. I wouldn’t go as far as to call her a control freak, but she comes close. When her life spirals out of control after the death of her friend, she certainly doesn’t want to admit that she needs help. She’s the kind of person who insists on pressing on no matter the circumstances. While I admire her determination, this does give Elizabeth the appearance of being cold at times. However, underneath her carefully controlled exterior, Elizabeth does have a softer side. She is absolutely crazy about her daughter and is as loving and devoted as any parent could be. Elizabeth also has a true passion for her work and she genuinely cares for each one of her patients.

Elizabeth’s softer side is further revealed in her relationship with Drake, a flame from her past. Elizabeth is cautious at first, but when she fully commits her heart to him, they have great potential as a couple. Unfortunately, Elizabeth has a secret that threatens to ruin her budding relationship with Drake. I thought the revelation of this secret played out in a fairly typical way, but it did add an interesting dimension to Elizabeth and Drake’s relationship.

Drake is a typical tough guy with a good heart. He’s a successful FBI agent who doesn’t take no for an answer and is used to doing things his way. Since Drake and Elizabeth both have strong personalities, they butt heads frequently, but given time and little compromise on both sides, I think they will work well together.

Ms. Rae did an excellent job of presenting several plausible suspects who would want to target Elizabeth. I carefully considered the motivation of each one and I was eventually able to narrow down the list based on the continued threats of the killer. As the story progressed, I couldn’t help but read faster, sure that I was on the right track. There were two twists that I didn’t see coming. The first involved Elizabeth and I didn’t think it was necessary as it sort of slowed things down at a moment when I wanted to keep moving full speed ahead. The second twist was more interesting and happened right at the climax when all the pieces of the puzzle were sliding into place and added an extra dash of suspense at just the right moment.

I enjoyed reading heartbeats. The pacing is great and the mystery is plotted very well. Anyone looking for a thrilling romantic suspense should give heartbeats a try.

Tallulah Murphy is a busy woman. As the newly appointed Director of Education for the Atlanta Art Museum, she has a thousand and one things to do on any given day. Dating is not high on that list; in fact, it’s not even on the radar.

Three hundred miles away in Charleston, South Carolina, Lieutenant Mitchell Weaver is gearing up for his promotion to be the youngest police chief in the city’s history. And unfortunately, as a prominent city official with all eyes watching his every move, a quality date seems untenable. But when good friends and good fortune set Tallulah and Mitch on a fateful adventure with Madame Evangeline’s high-end dating service, 1Night Stand, they may find a little matchmaking magic can reset their spirits of adventure and open their hearts and minds to the possibility of love.

Finding that right person to spend your life with sounds like an insurmountable task, but sign up with Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand service, and that task can become effortless!

In this tale, we meet Tallulah (Lou) Murphy, a beautiful young woman from Atlanta who has spent the better part of a year piecing her life back together after her ex broke off their relationship and did his best to ruin her career. A good friend signs her up for Madame Eve’s service, and Lou, who’s ready to find someone who makes her smile again, anxiously answers the multitude of questions and then waits to find her ideal match.

Mitch Weaver has just received a promotion to the Chief of the Charleston, South Carolina Police Department, making him the youngest chief in history. Just when his professional life was seemingly in place, however, his personal life has stagnated. Divorced for three years after finding out his wife had slept her way around the department, he’s mailed his last alimony check and is ready to move on. Thankfully, his good friend has signed him up for the 1NS service in hopes that his life can change.

As always, Madame Eve made a great match in Lou and Mitch. They both love the outdoors, have been burned by past relationships, and each want a family. A long term relationship is a definite for these two, and there is little doubt it would work.

The sex is hot, and definitely helps to strengthen the connection between Mitch and Lou. Their immediate physical attraction is enhanced when they realize they share similar interests and each is so different from the people that have hurt them in the past. Their only stumbling block? They live in different cities and different states. They quickly realize the obstacle they need to overcome, but refuse to allow it to overshadow their short time together.

I loved both characters and in a short few pages, the author conveys their past hurts, the way they overcame them, and their desire for new partners. In such a situation, a rebound is a natural assumption, but not for these two, and I credit that to the talent of the author.

As always, I’m left wanting more, but that’s because these characters are so likable. It’s hard not to root for them! If you want a quick, hot, and enjoyable read, definitely check this one out!

“Somebody get us the hell out of…”

This is the last transmission received from Caitlin Palamara’s audit team. What could never happen is now a terrifying fact. The five-person crew of the ISEA audit ship jack-a-dandy has vanished during a routine skip from sector ship Graywand to the planet Sierra.

Palamara and the others find themselves stranded on a hostile, undeveloped planet that bears no resemblance at all to Sierra. They’ve lost communication with Graywand, and their drive system is dead. Just when it seems that things can’t get worse, John Wheeler, who feels a connection with a mysterious alien presence, wanders off and stumbles upon the sprawling ruins of an ancient city. The others have no choice but to go after him.

The place is more than a little spooky. But there’s no real danger, right? The city is long dead, abandoned eons ago. Right?

Wrong.

For Caitlin Palamara’s small audit team, it’s the end of their comfortable routine, and the beginning of the interstellar nightmare that becomes known in ISEA archives as The Tartarus Incident.

It was just a routine mission until they landed on the wrong planet…

Mr. Greenleaf writes a good old-fashioned science fiction tale that has the flavor of those written in the 50’s by some of the world’s most talented sci-fi authors. He gives you a brief look at the world of the future and creates a crisis that is one of my worst fears: Finding yourself in an unexplored place with no idea of what’s out there and what it eats for lunch.

It all starts when Gordie had a hot date and was required to stay and repair a pod before he could go home. He didn’t want to miss out on his chance with her and the pod’s wiring was corroded. He decided to short cut it and put a jumper wire on the connection. That made it function. It was missing some safeties and wasn’t a long term fix but he’d take care of it the next time it came in. Sure…

As time goes on and a crew gets in the pod and heads out to audit books on another planet, they suddenly find themselves on an unknown planet with a pod that no longer functions. The worst part is that such an accident can’t happen. Pods only go where they are programmed and they were programmed for Sierra. Such an error can’t happen, but it has.

The author takes these two incidents and builds the entire story from them. The dispatcher at home is trying to trace the pod and its occupants and the crew is trying to repair the pod. Mr. Greenleaf expresses the uncertainty and fear of the crew very effectively. You empathize with the characters as they do their best to survive and you feel the frustration of the dispatcher who finds no one else senses the urgency he feels to solve this problem and save the crew. There can’t be a problem, you see.

I’ve had occasion to work with bureaucrats in the past, so it was easy for me to relate to Lars (the dispatcher) and his frustration. I’ve also felt like I was all alone in a new world a few times, so I was rooting for the crew in the pod. Mr. Greenleaf does a very nice job of drawing you into the story and making you care about his characters. His imaginary world seems realistic and dangerous. I’m going to look for more by this author. Why don’t you taste this story and see if it pleases you, too?

The editor is always right… Katia Lane, a down on her luck writer, finds this out the hard way. When she submits an erotic tale to Daring Desires Publishing, one head strong woman meets another as an author/editor war ensues. There’s no room for a diva in the publishing industry…and Sylvia L. Avers means to demonstrate this to the fledging writer. When you submit a manuscript to Daring Desires, you submit more than a book…you submit yourself.

As a BDSM conference nears, both women prepare to face off. Which one is going to be on top?

Give me an erotic romance with characters that leap off the page and have me snorting into my coffee and you have made me a reader that will not stop flicking the pages until the last scorch marks are cooled on my e-reader.

A story about a struggling author trying to change her genre from pirate romances into erotica should sound boring, right? Sure, it could but not in this book. From the first sentence, I wanted to know why Katia was slinging her coffee cup in frustration and cursing like a sailor. Her daily grind of balancing her waitress job and passion for writing really hit home for me. As a writer, I understood her irritation when her romance editor told her the newest book she had slaved over was crap. Can you say furious and heartbroken? Oh yes. You feel everything that Kat feels as she experiences it and I love books like that. Her awkward foray into the world of BDSM authorship is a bumpy journey that was joy to read about.

The second main character in the book is Sylvia, the editor at the erotica house that Katia submits her new BDSM story to. Little does Katia know, she will be submitting to more than just a copy edit. Sylvia is a force of nature with a dominant streak a mile wide. Right away, fiery emails banter back and forth between the two women. There were moments when I burst into abject laughter at the battle going on between author and editor as Katia’s education into the world of BDSM takes off in directions I just don’t see coming. The steam heats up as the tension between the two women mounts and flairs into an all-out fire storm. These two ladies are matched for a battle of the wills that will have you thinking about it for days after you finish reading the last page.

The plot development in this story was spot on. It was not predictable and each chapter was separated by character, so no issues of head hopping arose. The sex scenes were scorching and left me wanting this book to last for way more than fifty seven pages. The thing I enjoyed the most was the acerbic wit and the all-out real reactions from the characters. This was a one sit read that actually had me going right back to the beginning to start reading it again, I loved it so much. Authors Hightower and Kreiger have done an outstanding job of creating a character dynamic with a flair that really stood out as one of the best books I have read lately.

If you want an original story with a BDSM theme that will have you laughing out loud while simultaneously reaching for a pitcher of ice water, then The Submission is the book for you.

Twice-baked vampire, Gabriel Strickland, learns he has a chance at redemption when he’s whisked from his final demise into a purgatory secretly tucked in West Hollywood. Sixty creatures, including other dead vampires, pixies, a legendary Navaho stick man and bothersome leprechauns, struggle together to earn brownie points and wait out possible centuries of this purgatory. Gabriel receives dubious advice from the troll who runs the place, but there are always bugs in the pudding and he faces them all. Enter, the beautiful Dori Gallagher, who not only knocks Gabriel off his feet, but also an evil warlock who has designs on her. When menacing forces gather against Gabriel and everything he’s come to respect, it’s a fiery clash of the supernatural in one heroic effort to save his new reality.

That’s a first! I’ve never read a book where the hero, a vampire, is staked in the first chapter. Normally, that would be the death nail for a story. I actually felt sorry for Gabriel. He was so close to finding that illusive someone that vampires had only heard of, and then…nothing.

Well, not quite. This would be the shortest story ever written and the sequel would be basically un-necessary. In a clever twist on all things vampy, Ms. Riley-Magnus gives these undead a second chance, a stay of permanent execution if you will. But what will Gabrielle do with a second chance at a half-life? My curiosity kept me reading after the unfortunate staking and it was well worth the read.

Every “twice-baked” gets a guide through their new world. For Gabrielle that would be Crudo Cushman. What a fun character. I was picturing Danny Devito the whole time he talked. Did mention he’s a troll? Crudo, not Danny.

Apparently, vampires aren’t the only supernaturals that can be twice baked. I won’t bother to name the others, though. Readers will get a kick out meeting them and seeing how they cope or have trouble coping.

Gabe’s eventual love interest is the delightfully human and yet very talented Dori Gallagher. She’s sweet and honest and a great foil for Gabrielle. She’s a character who is easy to like and root for.

There was much about this book that was fun and unique to the urban fantasy genre. Not the least is the cliff hanger ending. I’m usually pretty good at guessing the unexpected but Ms. Riley-Magnus set this up very well and so very clever.

If you enjoy a good urban fantasy adventure with lots of layers and depth, you will want to read Cold in California. Book 2 is Monkey Jump and just the name has me anxious to read it and see what happens next.

Carly Penn is thrilled when her older brother, Joe, marries her dear friend, Kaylee, with the help of the 1Night Stand service. Now, looking for a final bout of passion to carry her through as terminal cancer steals her life, she’s turned to Madame Eve for herself. She doesn’t expect a happy ending, just a single night to remember as she faces the end of her days.

Vampire Agoston Barabás was forced to watch his true love, Dorika, murdered two hundred earlier, and clings to her dying promise to return to him. He takes one night at a time, never loving or becoming involved with another as he waits for his lover to find him. When he meets his date from 1Night Stand, he’s shocked to discover she carries the soul of his Dorika and the heart of a woman he could love.

As their fates collide in passionate lovemaking, Agoston offers Carly an unexpected option—live or die together. Dare she risk eternity with a vampire, even if his tender touch brings her a greater joy than she has ever known?

Madame Eve strikes again. This time she fixes up a mourning vampire with a terminally ill woman looking for one last fling. What neither could possibly know, however, was that this woman is the reincarnation of his long lost love. Did Madame Eve know? I guess only she can answer that.

Carly Penn has just happily witnessed the marriage between her best friend and her brother, the two of whom were set up by the 1Night Stand service. Carly is very close to her brother Joe, a werewolf, and is happy now that he has someone to care for him once she succumbs to the untreatable cancer she knows will soon take her life. Her final wish? To spend one night of passion with a sexy stranger before the pain of her illness takes over.

Agoston “Gus” Barabas is a 200 year old vampire who has spent the majority of his time searching for the soul of his deceased love, Dorika. His special skill as a vampire is the ability to see the essence, the aura, of each human being, and with every person he meets, he desperately hopes to find a match to the woman he lost so many years ago, but who promised to return to him one day. Urges and needs being what they are, he occasionally allows himself a fling, and thus as agreed to a 1NS hookup arranged by Madame Eve.

When the two meet, Gus knows she’s the one he’s been searching for, but Carly needs time to adjust, although she does know there’s something incredibly familiar about this man…

I don’t read a lot of paranormal stories, but I’m a fan of the 1Night Stand series, so I gave this a try. The premise of this story was quite good, and I was able to follow the paranormal aspects, given that I have little previous knowledge of werewolves or vampires. What seemed lacking, however was the emotional connection. Ms. Royce is very good at telling a story, but there wasn’t much feeling there. I didn’t sense the emotions of the characters, and although I knew why they belonged together, and was glad to see the happily ever after, I didn’t have much of an emotional investment.

That said, it’s not badly written. It’s a quick, entertaining read, as are many of the 1Night Stand series. If you like to dabble in the paranormal and believe in true and everlasting love, you may enjoy this one!

A demonstration of erotic hypnosis leads to two relationships: one inspiring and creative, the other abusive and destructive.

Darren Braid was a respected psychology professor until a student accused him of trying to hypnotize her into sexual slavery. The accusation was recanted, but the university dismissed him anyway. Feeling betrayed, Darren retreats into seclusion. But the FBI believes that his exceptional skill with hypnosis and his tainted personal history make him the perfect undercover agent to infiltrate a sex slavery ring.

Latoya Douglas is a beautiful black woman and one of L.A.’s hottest rap producers. Latoya will do almost anything to support her artists, including bringing them women. Her sister has been missing for four months, and now she is working for the studio that’s fronting the slavery ring. Latoya also has a HUGE hypnosis fetish and sees Darren’s erotic hypnosis recordings as a new art. She becomes Darren’s lover and muse. She encourages him to produce recordings that will make women be more sexually free, and she eagerly brings Darren subjects to test his erotic hypnosis recordings. After three years of solitude, Darren finds the relationship more inspiring and rewarding than anything he imagined. But he doesn’t know if he can trust her. He has to figure out if she’s part of the slavery ring or trying to infiltrate the ring to find her missing sister.

Marisa Martinez is a hotheaded young FBI agent. She allows Darren to hypnotize her to act submissive and obedient so she can get close to one of the slavers. But the hypnotic programming works too well. Marisa is in danger of losing herself to the submissive role and becoming a mindless sex toy who doesn’t care how she is used. Can Darren restore her mind before she’s actually sold into sexual slavery?

Imagine having someone, through the power of suggestion, control your actions, feelings and emotions by just saying one or two words. Now imagine that all you want to do is please the person who has thatcontrol no matter what. That is the power that Darren Braid, ex Psychology and Behavioral Modification Professor, had to offer. Through his tapes, Hypnotically Seduced, he’s able to completely hypnotize women into being what would be referred to as ‘fuckbunnies’ for anyone. One such person is Lamar Breaux, owner of Luv Bandit Muzic, who wants to hire Prof. Braid for a very special project he’s involved in. However, first he wants a demonstration of Darren’s work so he brings in three girls; Latoya, Jackie and Marisa. They each listen to the tapes and each are affected differently, Marisa more so than the other two. After watching, Lamar is happy with the aggressive sexual behavior of the girls and decides to use Darren for his project, especially if he can make them more docile and obedient.

Latoya is the CEO of Luv Bandit Muzic and is not as affected as Marisa, but she does want Darren and enjoys the sexual freedom being hypnotized brings. She also knows that Lamar is somehow mixed up in the disappearance of girls, her sister being one of them, and she’s determined to find her.

Redemption For The Hypnotist is a whirlwind of sex, mystery and a look into the human mind. Darren is trying to redeem himself after being falsely accused by one of his students. He, along with his FBI cousin, Mike, and undercover agent Marisa are working together to put Lamar away and find the missing girls. Marisa becomes sexually aggressive when hypnotized which Darren had to tone down.  This caused complications for Marisa because she is, by nature, anything but docile.

Redemption For the Hypnotist made this reader see how easily it is to take control over another persons mind and turn them into whatever you want them to be. In this case, Darren Braid’s specialty was turning women into uninhibited sexual slaves. I could not imagine someone being able to take that much control away from another person and that’s why this story was so intriguing.

A Scoundrel Drives a Hard Bargain…

Spirited and determined to protect her young brother at any cost, Lisette Lavigne is desperate to flee New Orleans. There’s only one ship sailing to England, though, and the rakish Captain Daniel Hillary will only allow Lisette’s family aboard for a very steep price…

But a Lady Always Gets the Upper Hand…

Daniel prides himself on running a tight ship, and he knows a lady will be nothing but trouble on a long voyage. Yet he can’t help but break his own ironclad rules when Lisette persuades him that being gentlemanly just this once is his wisest course of action…

Lisset Lavigne must have a guardian angel that fetches Captain Daniel Hillary again and again to save her from being ruined or worse. The reader has a unique vicarious experience as these two troubled characters struggle to come to terms with the twists and turns that life throws at them.

How the naïve but courageous Lisset and the arrogant, handsome but guilt-ridden Captain Daniel Hillary dance around each other after the deal for passage on his ship, the Cecily, entertains and gives the reader special insight into the personality of each of them. The undercurrent of impending danger is subtle and goes unheeded for a time.

Lisset is ingenious about the ways of the world. Her father has kept her sheltered, but now he’s dead and she must cope. When she overhears what her betrothed plans to do with her brilliant but different little brother Rafe, she vows to do whatever it takes to keep him safe.

She seeks the assistance of her father’s longtime friend and business associate Monsieur Baptiste and follows the advice of her older, more worldly-wise cousin Serafine that says the tea leaves indicate they must escape to England where they will survive and thrive. Serafine has a secret agenda but she also loves Lisset and Rafe. Lisset and Rafe leave behind their beautiful home and a sugar plantation and run.

Louis Reynaud, Lisset’s betrothed, considers her his property and also plans to own the property Rafe will inherit when he comes of age. He seems to have no redeeming qualities and is ruled by greed and desire for power—to be the giver of life or death at his pleasure.

As the plot and sub-plots unfold, the characters become more real. The humor and gradual revelation of the characters’ hope, fears, and thoughts keep the reader engaged. However, at times I felt I was on the outside looking in on the action. Also, all the major players, even to Serafine’s lost-lover, getting from America to England and their knowing their way around so well seems contrived at times. But the need to find out how a young Creole beauty and a wealthy Englishman manage to find common ground and their happy-ever-after kept me turning pages. A special bonus is learning about Rafe, his unique abilities, and how he is nurtured.

Lisa’s a sensible girl, but within moments her sexy partner leads her away and crashes through her inhibitions. His commanding, sexy charm destroys her good-girl ideals and she succumbs to his hunger. The sex is explosive, and Lisa believes she may have found what she’s looking for.

If only her new lover was the man she was supposed to meet that night…

Hot and fun to read, Lover Unexpected was a fast read which I couldn’t put down once I started it.

The main character, Lisa, is a workaholic that dreams of the house and white picket fence but doesn’t have time to pursue any of it. She’s not adventurous and she rationalizes things way too much. Overall, she’s incredibly human and real and I loved that about her. However, and though it is a short story, the fact that the author portrayed Lisa so realistically made it unbelievable when realizing the mistake she made about her mystery hero. She changes her mind and way of acting in a very short space of time.

The hero, (who’s name I won’t mention for the sake of keeping the mystery) was hot and sweet. Although I thought he was a bit creepy sometimes, especially when he said things like: “I know you better than you can imagine.” Nonetheless, those instances are few and compared to the other man contending for Lisa’s love (who is a jerk and I instantly disliked), he is the better man.

The story was well described. The sexual tension between the characters was fantastic and page-turning and the sex was both hot and fun. Particularly, the blowjob near the end of the novel was exciting and entertaining. It was clear that the characters were enjoying their little tryst and that contributed to creating a better, more down to earth impression.

Lover Unexpected is a quick, fun, sexy read, recommendable as an escape route from any moment of the day.
