What I Did During My Summer Vacation

This summer marked my twenty-fifth high school reunion. When the invitation arrived, my mind immediately drifted back to the days I strolled the halls of good ol’ Sacred Heart Academy, an all-girls high school. I was rather quiet in high school. I spent my nights and weekends babysitting and studying. I was voted “most studious” my senior year. One of the happiest days of my high school career was when I wore the traditional white gown and carried red roses down the aisle on graduation night. I moved onto college without a backward glance.

Flash forward twenty-five years and I decided to go to the reunion. The last time I went to a reunion, only ten years had passed and I don’t think I had enough distance yet from my teen years. At my twenty-five year reunion, I got reacquainted with women who were moms, pharmacists, professors, college department chairs, elementary principals, saleswomen, and physician assistants. I chatted with women who were funny, caring, interesting and a lot like me. Many of us laughed and wondered why we didn’t hang out in high school.

In high school, I was barely aware of who I was, yet I thought I knew who everyone else was. I imagine I wasn’t alone in my thinking considering all the teen-angst movies from Breakfast Club to Mean Girls. We pigeon-holed “the brains” and “the jocks” and “the popular girls” thinking the groups didn’t have anything in common. I know that’s what I thought. I rarely went outside my comfort zone to make friends with girls who had interests different than my own.

As we said our good-byes at the reunion, we promised not to wait five years to meet again. Maybe the passage of time or the maturity of being forty-something finally made us realize the labels we imposed on ourselves or others were completely one dimensional. Maturity allowed us to look beyond the differences to really get to know the person underneath.

I am so happy I attended my high school reunion this summer. Now, looking back, I can reframe my high school experience. My only regret is that I didn’t get to know more of these fantastic women twenty-five years ago.

Wedding planner Taylor Vaughn specializes in magical moments. So when her best friend asks her to plan his wedding, the task should have come as simply to her as all the others. There’s only one problem……she is desperately in love with the groom.

Caleb has always been Taylor’s best friend as well as her deepest and most secret desire. Her hopes that he will someday come to love her back are dashed on the day he brings his new fiancé into their lives. While the misery of losing the man she loves to another woman looms over her, she doesn’t expect to find her head turned by the most unlikely of strangers.

Ethan Young, cake decorator, is everything a woman could want in a man: handsome, charismatic, and has a way with icing! When she finds herself feeling more than simple attraction for the sexy baker, her heart is torn in two between the man she’s always loved and the man who’s slowly stealing her heart.

This story takes the phrase, “I’ve got your back” to new levels as it follows two lifelong friends on their journey of love.

The epilogue shows what cemented their friendship. The following chapters embark upon the discovery that a different kind of love possibly awaits both friends but there’s a lot of emotional growth that needs to take place before that can happen. What used to be comforting and welcoming like an old pair of slippers no longer satisfies the people that they’ve both become but both are loathe to face the truth.

I liked the technique that the author used to highlight just how in tune both Caleb and Taylor were to each other although I didn’t recognize a lot of the actors mentioned. Its use expressed the sheer volume of past history they both shared without going into long and drawn out details that would do the job but less effectively. It was an interesting choice. That same familiarity also came with unforeseen pitfalls because although they knew each other as no one else did, there was one thing that neither of them ever thought to express or explore and because of it, the specter of the unknown caused a believable and troublesome conflict. Cake was definitely a character driven story.

This book is Taylor’s account. It’s told in her point of view and the author stayed true through the story. When she first gets the bombshell that the traditional dynamic of her relationship was about to change with Caleb, it was made clear that this was a shock. It woke her up that change was afoot and she had a very hard time dealing with it. Caleb’s decision was the first push against a long line of dominoes that knocked over one thing after another, forcing Taylor onto a new path with alternate possibilities before her. None of which she could see in a positive light, until Ethan steps into the picture.

Ethan is a great character. He’s talented, described as a man in his prime and yet, for all his perfection and cake professionalism, he’s had an unfortunate past. I have a lot of respect for a person who can raise themselves out of all that negativity and become a better man as well as a successful entrepreneur. He didn’t take the easy road and the man that Taylor meets is a man honed through adversity, perseverance and guided by the love of his grandmother. Ethan was a great choice for a hero. He’s also a man who knows what he wants and goes after it. It was absolutely delicious when he focused on Taylor.

Taylor, however, is really confused and riddled with guilt. She returns Ethan’s interest but she has to go through a rather emotional process before she’s truly comfortable with even the idea of being with him. That confusion and uncertainty had the power to do great harm and the author used it to good effect. So much so, I wasn’t sure who, if anyone, was going to get their happy ever after. Ms. Marion made it very clear to me how dangerous all these volatile emotions plaguing Taylor were. Their affect on her physically and mentally were hard to read about but that kind of catharsis usually breaks a weak person or strengthens and emboldens a strong person making them fearless in facing the truth. Taylor is the latter and a heroine I could respect.

The few times that Ethan and Taylor are together are quite steamy and hot. That man knows how to please a woman and the author made that clear, much to my satisfaction. There was just enough detail and descriptions to make me very happy on Taylor’s behalf.

Although this story was labeled as having some comedic elements, I didn’t find that. I found this story hard to read because of the intense emotions, the hurt feelings and the suspense of not knowing how anyone was going to end up happy. Yes, there were times I smiled, perhaps chuckled, but this story is a serious romance that touches the heart. I also felt that more time should have been spent with Caleb easing Kim into the relationship instead of the instant, ‘Poof! Here she is!”. Then again, the quickness of the change might have been on purpose because certainly it threw Taylor for a loop and that’s what the story was about, her dealing with it. Ultimately, there is a happily ever after, so it made all the hoopla and throwing up well worth it.

Cake is a wonderfully intense, full bodied romance that explores the nature of strong friendships. It shows that healthy and supportive relationships can have value and staying power when they grow as the people grow. Sometimes it’s not easy but well worth it because they can continue to enrich and support the growing circle of friends and share that special love amongst them all. As for Taylor, her ideas for her own wedding were definitely unique and freeing. For her, the fun is just beginning. Read Cake and see.

Cara is haunted by the recent memories of a warehouse explosion that took the life of her best friend and caught her in the blast. Urged by friends to experiment with tattoo to cover the burns scars on her shoulder, Cara heads for the mysterious tattoo shop in Portland everyone is talking about.

Aedhan, the gorgeous tattoo master, leaves her senses reeling and her knees weak. Just the touch of his talented hands brings relief and a sense of release from her pain. His charming, eccentric ways, combined with his tangerine hair and odd accent, create an intoxicating mix. To her delight, the incredible tattoo he expertly lays over her scar hides everything–and makes her long for more of his healing touch.

Soon she is pulled into an erotic journey of unimagined delight, terror and transformation. Dragons? In Portland? Really? Oozing sex and magic? Yet, something isn’t quite adding up. Is Aedhan really telling her the truth about what he’s doing in that shop? But she’s so crazy in lust and wonder, it’s hard to care.

Shape-shifter Aedhan fully intends to follow the rules of his secret mission, number one being no sex with the human women in Portland. Then Cara shows up at his shop and her sweetness and delightful freckles almost stops his heart. When he perceives the sorrow in her life, he is consumed with the need to know more. Who has hurt her? After he gets a taste of her blood on his tattoo needles and discovers the extra special something in her fluids, he decides he must see Cara again, even if it means breaking the rules.

And that’s when things start to go terribly wrong…or perfectly right for Cara and the Draca.

Magic spells, shape-shifting dragons, secret missions, what’s not to love?  And this book has all that and more:  romance, steamy and hot sex, and tattoos, just for a bit of added spice. Cara and the Darca is book two in Louisa Kelley’s Daughter of Draca series.

Dragons are looking for a way to rebuild their population, traveling from their secret sanctuary out into the world they search for women who are part Draca. Aedhan is sent to Portland and through a tattoo shop he scouts for compatible women, enter Cara a woman scarred by an incident involving another Draca, she comes to heal, to receive a tattoo, which will cover up the scar and allow her a fresh life. Romance, danger and intrigue ensure.

The book is well written, flows well, and the plot line does not have any major inconsistencies. The story stands on its own. I have not had the opportunity to read the first book and I had no issues following the storyline.

While the story line had a unique twist to it, character development could have had more depth. The characters met, fall in love, but Cara is incredibly accepting without any real issues. Most people, even those who love the paranormal would be a little less accepting and more freaked out when confronted with the reality of it.

At 126 pages, it is a quick read and perfect if you want some quick spicy romance. I have a whole library of these books because there are times when you just want to lose yourself in the story, without any remarkable or crazy things. In that, it absolutely excels in my book and definitely has my recommendation.

Annie Prince has impetuously flown halfway ’round the world to visit a sexy cowboy she met online—only to find herself stranded in Sydney. Seems she and Dylan crossed wires, and he’s on his way to New York. His twin, Hunter, saves the day and whisks her back to the family cattle station. Hunter’s as easy on the eyes as Dylan, and even easier to talk to. Annie might have flown to Oz to meet one brother, but soon sparks are flying with the other.

Hunter considered Dylan a dumb arse for jetting off to America for some stranger—until he met Annie. Turns out the New Yorker is a smart, funny, hard-working jillaroo…and hotter than the Aussie desert. Hunter’s not normally one to poach his brother’s women, but he can’t keep his hands, lips, tongue and other body parts off this sexy city girl.

When raging lust leads to emotional attachment, where does that leave Annie and Hunter when her vacation comes to an end—or when Dylan finds out?

Where does a famous rich girl go when she is tired of the paparazzi, the crowded big city, and the country where she cannot get any privacy? She tries out the land of Oz, aka Australia, where she falls for a handsome, sexy cowboy/stockman. Unfortunately, he’s the brother of the guy she met online.

Annie Prince is twenty-eight years old and still trying to prove herself in the world. She works hard at a job that she landed through her own efforts and not by riding her famous father’s reputation. She thinks she let her father down when she refused to accept a company that he wanted to hand over to her as a graduation gift. In the relationship department, Annie has not yet found anyone who wants her for herself and not for her family’s fame and/or fortune.

Hunter Sullivan was minding his own business and being a good brother when he winds up having to pick up his brother’s new friend, Annie, from the airport. Hunter hasn’t been looking for a steady relationship, instead he has been satisfying himself with casual hookups. His mother even resorted to flying in girls who were related to her friends and acquaintances under the guise of hiring a cook for their ranch/station, but still Hunter resisted getting serious.

Throwing these two together caused some major sparks since they were falling for each other, but had to keep resisting in order to keep from hurting Hunter’s brother, Dylan, who thought that Annie might be the one for him. The tug of war with emotions and sexual tension was a delicious part of this story.

Ms. Carr and Ms. Couper’s collaboration resulted in a very steamy and satisfying romp through an Australian cattle station. Their skill with storytelling made for an awesome vicarious thrill of experiencing life as a rich girl who takes a break from her life and finds out that she is just beginning to live in the real world. I enjoyed Annie’s story and hope for more collaborative efforts from these two authors. Since this is book one of a series, I am going to be watching for the rest of them. I will also be looking for stories that they write individually. I highly recommend Misplaced Princess for a quick and sizzling read.

She’s one of the few…

Jazz has been one of the guys for over a decade, serving her country with distinction, but she longs to explore her femininity, to be desired as a woman, to flirt, cavort and fulfill every sexual desire. When her mother of all people, signs her up for a 1Night Stand, she’s not sure whether to be exhilarated or pissed. Flying to Las Vegas on the promise of a total escape, Jazz plans to be Jasmine for just one night, because tomorrow, she plans to re-up for another five years.

They’re two of the proud…

Logan Cavanaugh grew up across the street from his best friend and brother-in-arms, Zach Evans. Inseparable, the two have shared everything, including women, until the year before when an IED attack during combat injured both of them. Zach suffered a concussion, but Logan’s injuries were far more extensive. After a year of physical therapy, he can walk, but he’ll never run or love a woman again, or so he fears. He’s ready to accept his impotence, but Zach has other ideas. He hopes a 1Night Stand date with the perfect woman will heal Logan’s confidence and masculinity.

They’re all Marines…

They’ll share each other, but will one night be enough?

Heather Long has done the near-impossible. She’s enticed me not only to read a menage story, but fall in love with it as well!

Gunnery Sergeant Jasmine Winters is a rough and tumble Marine who has seen her share of combat. Always ready for a fight, she’s proven herself on the battlefield, but what she really wants, even if only for a brief time, is to feel like a woman. With this goal in mind, she signs up for Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand service, hoping to find not one, but two men to share a hot passionate night and helping find the woman she knows is buried deep inside.

Zach Evans is a combat veteran who has devoted a good deal of the last few months to his best friend, Logan Cavanaugh, who was badly injured by a roadside bomb. Unwilling to allow Logan to wither away in self-pity, Zach signed them up, along with the rest of their unit, to the 1Night Stand service. There was a difference with this request, however. Because Logan was resistant, Zach signed up for a menage, a practice the two men had engaged in prior to their combat days.

Logan, who has battled back from injury, even having to learn to walk again, is nervous about their pending date, not only because of the various scars he now has up and down his body, but because he’s been sadly impotent since that fateful day. With Zach’s encouragement, he’s agreed, but still isn’t confident things will go well once their date arrives. I will say Logan was definitely my favorite of the three; my heart went out to an American hero, trying to find what his life is supposed to be after devastation.

I am a huge lover of romance, but my preference is usually one man – one woman. This story is number two in a series, and since I read them out of order, this one came up last. I’m happy about that because by the time this book came across my desk I had more faith in Ms. Long than I have in most any other author. I knew the power of her writing and gave the story of a three-way a chance. I was NOT disappointed.

I felt a strong connection to all three of these individuals. Their motivations and needs were clearly laid out and I was rooting for all three of them to get what they needed out of their night of passion. Their sex was certainly hot, but they were also very respectful and had a genuine like of the others. Just like the other titles in the Always a Marine stories, it’s so easy to get lost in the words on the page. Heather Long is an amazing talent. I’d love for her to connect the stories of all these individuals into a longer novel so I can spend more time with them!

I can’t recommend all of her series highly enough, but if you like the idea of a menage, this story will definitely NOT disappoint!

Laird Ciaran MacGregor discovers the beautiful, wounded Lady Rosalia Armstrong while journeying to the king’s court. Already burdened with the task of maintaining the peace in his lands, Ciaran has very little patience for this headstrong woman. She’s as fearsome as the men trying to kill him for his lands, and their verbal sparring leaves him burning for a more intimate relationship. And if Rosalia’s not careful, she’ll soon discover his prowess…on and off the battlefield.

Rosalia Armstrong just wants to find peace …to find herself.

Bruised and battered, Rosalia runs away from an unbelievably cruel mother and from having to marry the domineering Lord Dunnehl who is willing to pay lots of money for her. Her parents have no compunction about using Rosalia to replenish the estate’s coffers so they can continue living in the style they are accustomed.

Ciaran, Laird of the MacGregor clan, is already burdened with heavy responsibilities and does not need Rosalia added to them, but at every turn, he cannot see his way clear to leave her on her own after his men find her unconscious in a forest clearing with her beautiful black horse, Noonie, standing nearby.

Set in the time when King James of England was trying desperately to gain control over the forever-feuding Highlanders, Temptation in a Kilt focuses on the MacGregors and the “bloody Campbells”.

Determined to honor vows made to his dying father, Ciaran keeps the MacGregor holdings well defended against the greedy, power-hungry Campbells that always pose a threat. However, the never-ending burden Ciaran must deal with is his drinking, ‘wenching’, youngest brother Declan. Never having gotten over their mother’s death, Declan is defiant, disrespectful, and disgusting; but Ciaran never wavers in his effort to help him ‘grow up’ and find his place in the scheme of things. Their conflicts stir up strong emotions and at times unpleasant physical encounters.

Rosalia had set out for Glengarry in the far north rough country of Scotland with no idea how to get there or what she was getting into. She’d just hoped relatives, whom she’d never met would welcome her. When she ends up wintering at Glenorchy, the MacGregor Castle, life presents a whole new set of challenges. She is well liked by all but one person there, yet her low self-esteem keeps her at a certain distance from everyone. Even though she and Ciaran share exhilarating times, tense times, and dangerous times, they are hindered from getting on with their lives by Ciaran’s obsession with a vow he made about Declan and Rosalia’s obsession about being a burden. Even though Ciaran is truly temptation in a kilt, Rosalia does not want “just a tumble” and Ciaran does not feel free to marry, consequently love is in limbo. These obsessions may be a little overdone, but not enough to keep one from turning pages to see what happens next.

The secondary characters stir up an abundance of conflicts, keep a thread of humor present, and keep the action lively. Aiden and Aisling, Ciaran’s brother and sister-in-law, bring shining love and delightful humor to events. Beathag, Ciaran former leman, keeps a dark, threatening thread of danger present, while Declan, seemingly the most despicable of all does grow up, but not before his weaknesses are exploited.

The frightening, gut-wrenching events that lead up to the climax makes one’s heart pound and keeps adrenaline pumping. The many twists and turns that take place are skillfully interlaced with foreshadowing and subtle clues that are threaded throughout. Ms. Roberts weaves together historical events, exquisite descriptions, intrigues, humor, and compelling characters to create a love story that leaves the reader with a satisfied sigh—ah, yes, a happy-ever-after.

When his wife dies of ovarian cancer, Russell Mullins quits the Secret Service to repurpose his life. He joins a Washington D.C. private protection company and is assigned to guard Paul Luguire, a Federal Reserve executive and its chief liaison with the U.S. Treasury.

Mullins and Luguire form a strong friendship. So when a police detective calls in the middle of the night with word of Luguire’s suicide, Mullins doesn’t buy it. His doubts are reinforced by Amanda Church, a former Secret Service colleague now in the Federal Reserve’s cyber-security unit. She uncovered a suspicious financial transaction initiated by Luguire only days before his death. He authorized unrequested funds to be transferred from the Federal Reserve to a regional bank.Even stranger, after Luguire’s suicide, Amanda finds the transaction has been erased from Federal Reserve records. The regional bank now shows the money wired from an offshore account in the name of Russell Mullins. Someone is setting Rusty up. And when the bank president is murdered, Mullins rockets to the top of the suspect list. As a tenacious reporter develops leads, Mullins follows a conspiratorial trail of killing and kidnapping that leads from a shadowy mastermind to the possible destruction of America’s financial system. In an age of Wall Street meltdowns and downgrading of the U.S. credit rating, the secretive Federal Reserve has a pivotal role. Twelve targets are known. The clock is ticking. What, or who, is the thirteenth?

The 13th Target is a suspenseful and dark political thriller. Rusty Mullins is–or was–much more than a bodyguard, so when the guy he’s protecting ends up dead, he can’t leave it alone. It migh be a suicide, but he sure doesn’t want to believe it. And pretty quickly, he becomes even more motivated to figure out what happened, as he himself becomes a suspect. He’s as tough as nails, though, as well as smart and has friends in places to help. Intrigue blends with possible conspiracy here, in what quickly seems to be a government cover-up. We grasp that there is more than one ‘target’, yet the aim of the conspiracy seems illusive.

Money makes this plot go around: and not just wealth but economics, the Feds, the internal operation of government departments and government controls.

Mullins is a great main character; flawed, but admirable. His friends are as distinctive, valuable to the storyline yet not slaves to it: they have their own lives, and so are completely believable as well.

This is as far from a light-hearted mystery as one can get: although there is a case to solve, it is more of a noir thriller. The overall complexity slows what would otherwise be a fast read, because it is truly engaging.

Volatile moments almost leap from the pages – truly giving many meanings to the word “thriller.”

Straightforward writing style keeps this from becoming a terribly complex puzzle; I do think it will be most enjoyed by fans of the genre.

Rules Are Made to be Disobeyed…

Sophia Thorne is new to the Regency’s glittering high society, which resembles her magical homeland only insofar as both places are filled with ridiculous rules. Which means no matter where she goes, she’s bound for trouble…

And Scandals Are Meant to be Shocking…

The Duke of Robinsworth has flaunted and shocked society for years. In a moment of fateful mischief, Robinsworth encounters the enchanting and distinctly scandalous Sophia. Between her streak of magical mischief and his penchant for scandal, they’re about to take rule-breaking to a whole new level…

She’s on a mission: to remove the sadness from the Duke. She has a list of rules she cannot break and she’s determined not to. She does improve the Duke’s attitude, but she doesn’t have much luck with those rules…

Ms. Falkner writes a good story that flows well and is full of spirit, emotions, and love for the two main characters. When Sophia calms his little girl, he’s impressed. When Sophia sees him, she feels butterflies in her stomach. Nobody said he was that good looking! While Sophia works on her goal, which is to make him accept his wife’s death and stop blaming himself for it, he’s working on his goal. He wants to capture her heart. One of Sophia’s rules is that she can’t tell him she’s Fae.

The author placed Sophia in the human world with her grandmother, a maid, and a garden gnome who follows her around. Ms. Falkner gave her a difficult assignment: it’s hard to complete her mission without falling in love with the Duke. The supporting characters often express frustration with her, especially Ronald, the garden gnome. Three of the main supporting cast include the Duke’s brother who goes out of his way to have words with Sophia, their mother and a decidedly wicked grandmother. I spent time laughing about what Grandma brought up at parties; she cared not who was listening. While all this going on, the author takes me back to the world of Fae and where the grandfather is plotting. I knew something was going on, but I wasn’t sure how it would all turn out.

I enjoy stories about the world of Fae and this author does a very nice job of melding the two worlds together. She gives you fun characters with lots of quirks to make them interesting and the result of her work is magical on its own.

If you like a touch of magic in your stories, this book is for you. If you believe in the power of love, this book is also for you. And if you like a good adventure, this one will work for that, too. Why not get a copy and see what you think?

Fresh off yet another romantic disaster, Jay doesn’t understand his attraction to the taciturn line cook, but there’s no fighting the chemistry that lands them in bed together. Where Sam’s subtly dominant streak takes command, and Jay delights in discovering the pleasures of his submissive side.

Safe in the assumption their relationship is temporary, neither lover holds back when the heat is on. Until Sam’s deadly past catches up with them with a vengeance, forcing him to drop the life he’s built, pick up his lover, and run. As danger cuts closer to the bone, Sam and Jay are forced to face the truth. About themselves, about the depth of their love—and the newly forged bonds that are about to be tested to the limit.

If you ever wondered if a good mobster plot could mix with hot M/M, then here you go!

Jay is a young man on the wander, he’s cute, he’s alone and he’d like a guy to share his life with, someone different to the line of disastrous romances of his past. Sam on the other hand isn’t looking for anything other than a quiet life, so when Jay wanders into his diner and catches his eye, things get hot. But can they handle the heat?

Last Stop is a book that kept me going back for more, and was one of those reads that I just couldn’t guess what was going to happen next, even when I thought I could. The building relationship between the two lead characters is cleverly woven into a complex plot that holds intrigue, danger and a good sprinkle of bedroom action.

I enjoyed how the author switched between Jay and Sam’s point of view and how I got to hear both of their voices, which were quite different. Sam for all his gruffness, really was a bit of a softy and definitely a keeper. Jay was so likeable, I actually did want to hug him. And did I mention the sex? Phew, it’s hot and steamy and certainly a bit kinky. There’s plenty of it too, it’s spread out well through the book so you get a hit of steamy action just when you need it.

Last Stop is very well written, it has a plot with lots of threads that are all tied up nicely and two characters who come to life on the page. I certainly recommend it if you enjoy M/M, contemporary and a story that drops your heroes on the wrong side of danger.

He lived through ages with the curse of attracting women…who end up dead…

One upon a time, he was the most handsome of princes, destined for great things. But now he’s a lonely legend, hobbled by a dark history. With too many dead in his wake, Bluebeard escapes the only way he knows how—through the evil spell of alcohol. But it’s a far different kind of spell that’s been ruining his life for centuries.

How will she survive this killer Prince Charming?

Jodi Walters is a fixer, someone who can put magic back in order. She’s the best in Hollywood at her game. But Blue has a problem she’s never encountered before—and worse, she finds herself perilously attractived to him.

If there’s one word that sums up this book, it’s originality. All too often paranormal stories start sounding the same, but this one took a different approach to a make believe world.

I enjoyed getting to know Jodi and Blue. The secondary characters were fun too, especially Tank who I hope gets her own story one of these days.

Charming Blue is part legend, part fairy tale which made me reminisce about my childhood and the fairy tales I enjoyed so much like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Ms. Grayson did a wonderful job of setting up this mythical world that on the one hand seems like our modern society but on the other it’s magical enough to immerse yourself totally into the world of make believe.

It’s a fun, unique read, and while the book might not be for every fan of paranormals, if you’re looking for something slightly different, I’d say give this one a read.
