An Explosive Attraction…

Lady Leila Staines has always felt like an outcast among her magically gifted sisters. Desperate to discover her own talent, she seeks out Dunstan Ives, a dark and brooding aristocrat with a scientific bent who may hold the key to unleashing Leila’s hidden powers.

Can Create A Spark That’s Pure Magic…

Dunstan has shunned the decadent society that wrongfully condemned him of murder, and he’s vowed never again to succumb to the spell of a beautiful woman. But the bewitching Lady Leila makes him a proposal no man in his position can resist.

Oh yes, there is magic—of pheromones, life from a tiny seed, family love, unique talents, secret places, and “meant-to-be” love that bides its time but will not be denied.

When a Malcolm woman and an Ives man make a deal that will allow each of them to work toward respective goals, Society is aghast. Leila and Durstan are each misfits, yet their families give unstinting support always and more so when they face tremendous odds.

Dunstan Ives, the most learned agronomist in England, is believed by many to be a murderer. Consequently, when the wealth widow Leila, Lady Staines, hires him as her estate manager, enemies contrive to derail their plans. Durstan hates being beholden to Lady Staines. But he has financial responsibilities; he needs to clear his name; and he also needs a place to bring to fruition his experiment with a special crop that will benefit poor farmers.

His surly ways irk Leila, but she weighs her irritation against her desires and decides to outmaneuver him so she can have her roses and pursue her dream.

Leila had conquered Society for her late husband’s sake and now she has solid social standing among the elite. However, all she wants is to live on her country estate, grow flowers—especially roses, so she can distill special scents that fit personalities. These scents prove to be the key that unlocks the secret to her “special gift”—what a gift it is!

Dunstan avoids and ignores the Lady of the Manor, Leila, as much as possible. To him she’s a dangerous Malcolm who has a sultry regal elegance and even though she seems slightly vulnerable at times, she’s tenacious in her determination to get what she wants.

Conversely, Dunstan lusts for the dark-haired woman called Lily in the red dress who digs in the dirt and protects baby rabbits. He’s attracted to her quick wit, lighthearted ways, provocative nature, and is rather amazed at her total lack of proper respect for authority. He doesn’t know how she fits in on the estate, but she sends his body into an agony of unrequited lust.

As Leila learns more about how to channel her gift, she begins to unravel some happenings that are a threat to her and to Dunstan, but she also uses it to have fun with Durstan in her own special way. She does get frustrated as they battle for control with both of them determined to get what they want.

Leila’s nephew who will get the estate should she remarry is a spoiled, undisciplined young man with an agenda all his own. He and his, so–called friends make life miserable for her. The life-threatening situations that flare up keep the reader on pins and needles.

Both the Ives and Malcolm families rally to the cause when Leila and Dunstan need them. These highly gifted people bring humor and excitement, as well as a no-nonsense determination and ability to protect their own. Dunstan’s son, Griffin, and his questionable relative, “Adonis”, bring complications and mystery to mix with all the other happenings. Of course, each the members of both families seem to have intriguing stories of their own.

Patricia Rice’s remarkable descriptions of places and people bring the story to life. She creates mesmerizing scenes that are breathtaking and truly magical. The grotto scene is one long to be remembered—gracious, how it quickens the senses. She weaves together fun, fear, and serious happenings along with captivating back stories as Leila and Dunstan’s beautiful love takes deep root and thrives. Her tantalizing symbolism and compelling metaphors make Must Be Magic enchanting. What a joy to read!

Justin Reeves is a man who has it all: a good job, a loving wife and children who are the center of his universe. Justin also has a secret he’s hidden from everyone his entire life—or so he thought. Quite innocently his small daughter, Debby, stumbles upon his secret and is shocked by what she finds. She confronts her father with the awful truth, and together they embark upon a journey which takes her father from the darkness of shame into the light of victory.

Enjoy Christmas all year long! Ms. Craver’s A Christmas Gift is a delightful short story. The first person point of view, the exacting descriptions and realistic conversation make this immediate and personal.

Debra sneaks downstairs very very quietly late at night to use the bathroom and discovers, quite accidentally, that her father is busy studying her school book. Why would he be doing that? She wants to ask someone about his studious activity, yet, one problem or another keeps her from asking each person she thinks of. Still, she’s curious and perseveres, until she finally realizes that he’s trying to cope with a particular problem. Then, this precocious girl tries to come up with people who would be able to help him.

The highlight here might be the human interaction: the family and friends who are supportive, the neighborhood that can be relied on as a community. However, elements of the setting are simply enchanting. This novella put me in mind of a time of 4-H meetings, church groups, picnic outings and the importance of family life. Delightful.

‘A Christmas Gift’ is anything but a fast read, with its great attention to details and descriptions. This more than fits the story’s tone and overall pace, so no complaint: however, contemporary readers may find this quite different from their usual selections. A short sample:

… a woman of medium height and probably overweight by sixty pounds, wore a green dress in a fine material. A pretty lacy hankie was stuck in a front pocket, and around her neck was a small pearl choker. ….

Although this book is listed as YA, I think its true audience will be with older readers – some will be charmed to recall the conventions, customs, and perhaps, more importantly, the challenges of life in the 50s. The prologue is a nice, almost confidential-feeling conversation with the author. It’s a charming introduction to A Christmas Gift. It’s also a little window to the past… a special thank you for sharing, to author Diane Craver.

A spunky spinster helps rescue a boy, his pigs, and his family from corrupt officials and thieves.

Grace Gary, a young widow, struggles to rear her three children and keep her job. Due to her dirty-dealing boss, she’s given 90 days to pay off her mortgage or lose her house. If her son’s (Paul’s) pigs win the local and then the state fair, they’ll make enough money to save their home. But the pigs keep escaping, eating the neighbor’s chickens and galloping to Mimi Witherspoon’s farm at the edge of town. Police tell Grace to get rid of them. Mimi, known for her Good Works, comes to the rescue, offering to let Paul keep the pigs at her farm. Her nephew, Tim, helps Paul move the pigs and falls in love with Grace. Then the pigs are pignapped. Tim and Paul find the pigs and catch the thieves.

If there is one message you should take away from reading this book it would be this:  Never raise pigs…

Ms. Bullock writes a delightfully heartwarming story of a woman who has lost her husband to cancer and is trying to survive with a mortgage and three children. Grace has no interest in men; she’s too busy trying to keep her head above water.

The author pulls no punches in her story. Grace is the victim of sexual harassment, the bank tries to foreclose on her home for non-payment (despite having extended the mortgage and giving her time to catch up), and her financial situation looks bleak. Grace is good woman with a young man at home who wants to protect her and help with their financial situation. When Paul has a chance to win the pig championship at show, it could result in a financial windfall for them. But someone doesn’t want them to succeed.

This is really a funny story filled with odd characters. It’s so off the wall, it makes it believable. You want to think things like this can’t happen, but there are good and bad people in the world in general and quite a few are in someone else’s pocket. This author’s tale flows well, makes you care about all the “good” characters, even the weird old lady that donates money to good causes and her adopted grandson, Tim. You even start to worry about the pigs as the story goes on.

Christianity is a theme in this story, but it doesn’t overwhelm the story. Ms. Bullock has written a fast moving story with lots of action and antics that will make you laugh out loud. The pigs themselves are a big part of this story and you will want to read about Percy and Priscilla’s shenanigans. Why not get yourself a copy and settle into a comfortable chair and see how long it takes until you find yourself snickering?

For Prince Liam, families meant bad news, unwanted commitments, and the loss of his personal freedom. Love spawned white picket fences, slippers at the hearth with a wife and kids making demands, so why did those images disappear when he met Melanie Babcot?

Melanie Babcot fought hard to escape the horrors of her youth and vowed to remain single and free, so when paid to protect Prince Liam from insurgents why did her personal pledge fly out the window?

From Now Until Forever sports a warm, slightly simple cover and in this case: what you see couldn’t be further from what you get.

You see, Liam is a prince and Melanie is not his wife nor girlfriend, but his protector. Violence erupts at the outset, and I understood immediately that he needed protection, and appreciated Melanie for her abilities as well. More slowly, I come to understand the dangers Liam lives with and to some degree at least, chose.

Their relationship at first seems both difficult and occasionally adversarial, yet, underneath each of their efforts to maintain a ‘pretend’ relationship, a real one is developing. Sadly; they’re both in danger. Neither has been completely honest with the other. This hardly seems a great place for a more meaningful relationship to start.

The suspense and complexity build throughout the story. Attention to detail is plainly important to the author – and so also, the reader. Speaking of details: this reader loved the backdrop, the perfectly-described action, and most especially the chase scenes! They are always exciting but somehow also fun.

Fast, unpredictable and yet featuring all the best of a genuine romance: Do read.

The final in a four-book miniseries within the Woodcutter’s Grim Series dealing with the curse on the Shaussegeny family. Very loosely based on Beauty and the Beast. The Shaussegeny family curse came with one final pronouncement: “And now there is but one manner in which this curse can be broken and obliterated entirely: That beauty falls in love with the beast and vice versa, that evil loves good and good loves evil. If this should happen, your family shall be released from each aspect of my curse and your alliance with evil shall be ended.”

When Ransom Shaussegeny attempts to cure the family of the curse they live under, he becomes a werewolf trapped in his beast form and isolates himself inside the family fortress. When he meets Tess Moore, a beautiful enchantress, and falls under her spell, Ransom no longer knows who or what is real—or whether the evil in Woodcutter’s Grim is about to have the last laugh by dooming him, the woman he loves, and his family for all time…

Will Ransom be set free by science or magic?

I’m glad Ransom finally got his own story. In the previous three stories in the anthology, he remained a bit of a mystery. I only knew that he was a scientist desperate to create a potion that would cure his family of the werewolf curse, and that he’s never left his family’s property for fear of contaminating anyone else, especially his chosen mate, with his curse. As I read, I discovered that Ransom is much more than a scientist. He’s a caring, sensitive man with amazing willpower. While the rest of his family embraces the curse of the werewolf, Ransom has been fighting it for over twenty years. It would have been so much easier for Ransom to embrace the curse, but he took the more difficult path. I admire his perseverance and dedication to his principles.

When a strange man stumbles onto the Shaussegeny property, his situation bears an eerie resemblance to the tale of “Beauty and the Beast.” Since Ransom is such a scientific and logical person, I did find it a bit odd that he would suddenly decide to go where the magic was leading him. After all, he’d spent his whole life resisting the magic and evil that surrounded Woodcutter’s Grim. However, this led Ransom into the interesting predicament of having to acknowledge that science might not hold the key to everything after all.

Tess brings out the best in Ransom. Though they met under less than ideal circumstances, they quickly begin to fall in love and have great chemistry. Like Ransom was at the beginning, Tess is very mysterious. The truth of her past isn’t revealed in full until the end of the story. I can’t give away any details without spoiling the ending. However, I will say that Tess’s history is a truly interesting twist that I didn’t expect.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Beauty is the Beast. Ransom’s happy ending with Tess is sweet and well deserved. Ms. Wiesner’s take on the classic fairytale was the perfect ending to this miniseries within the overall Woodcutter’s Grim Series. Anyone who enjoys fairytales that are a little different should certainly read Beauty is the Beast as well as the other stories in the anthology

Frannie and David Young have been married over twenty years, have two kids, busy jobs, a house in the suburbs and a dog named Max. To keep the romance alive in their relationship, they plan a “date” twice a month. Their block of time together includes very few rules—no kids or dogs, but requires an open mind. Frannie and David take turns planning dates, depending on the NFL’s schedule and how the planets are aligned that particular month.

In this second short story in the series, Frannie chooses a hands-on French cooking class as their outing. As they struggle with the “right” way to spice up their lives (both in and out of the kitchen), they discover that their strength as a couple depends on their ability to “wing it.” They also discover that “winging it” with raw oysters, a bottle of wine and an eccentric French cook can make for one interesting date.

Charming…not an adjective I normally use to describe a story but I can’t think of another word that describes it better. It’s a quick read that had me smiling, and sometimes laughing, from first to last word. The two lead characters are fun and very realistic. I enjoyed their interaction with other couples in their French cooking class and their funny banter. I also thought the conversations with the instructor were great, too. It’s got romance, humor, food, and French food no less. A reader couldn’t ask for a better combination.

French Romance is the second book in the Young at Heart series for Ms. Mathison. It was interesting to see her switch genres from mystery to contemporary romance. Her writing is strong and her characters solid.

While the story focuses on an older couple I know readers of any age will enjoy this story. I’m positive, as it did with me, the word charming will spring to mind after you’ve read it. This is one I highly recommend.

When a successful investment banker’s unbridled ambition collides with the world’s most powerful and most brutal drug cartel, there can only be one loser.

John Kent thought he had it all. The phenomenal success of his private equity firm has propelled him into the world’s wealthy super-league. Self-made and from a poor background, he’s living his dream. Then he discovers his financial backers are a front for the world’s largest organized crime group, the Mexican Caruana drug cartel. It is run by Felix Safuentes, also known as “Jivaro” after the South American tribe famous for decapitating its enemies. Kent’s nightmare hasn’t even started…

John Kent went from being on top of the world to being at the bottom in a moment’s notice. When CBC’s largest backer goes under, he’s left scrambling to find another investor – fast. Enter Tritona – a large Swiss firm willing to invest just what Kent needs plus a lot more. When the truth behind where Tritona’s funds are coming from becomes clear, Kent and his colleagues are in for a rude awakening and an extreme amount of danger. One thing is very clear, however. Sometimes it’s hard to know who the bad guy really is.

The majority of the story is told through the eyes of John Kent, CEO of CBC, a private equity investment firm in the UK. Although he started out as a somewhat likable character, if a bit too money-focused for my tastes, his true colors show before long. His obsession with becoming a billionaire and making as much money as he can winds up being his ultimate downfall. He’s definitely an interesting character to observe. He seems to have a one-track mind: make more money! But in the few instances his wife, Sarah, is in the picture, you see a different side of him, but briefly. Despite the fact I didn’t have much of a connection with him, I did feel sympathy for his situation as the truth of Tritona becomes known and his world crumbles around him.

Probably the most interesting part of this story was the fact that none of the characters are very likable individuals. However, despite that, you are drawn into the story and held firm. I’m not sure if it’s because they all, in some way, manage to get exactly what they deserve or if it’s just a testament to the author’s writing style, but whatever the reason, I couldn’t put The Geneva Connection down once I started it. The intricate plot, laced with just enough background information to make it realistic and understandable, takes twist after turn until you reach the final destination, white-knuckling it all the way. An intense thrill ride through the world of investment banking, drug cartels, and money laundering.

Zandy’s had too much to drink and is in the wrong place at the wrong time. She knows she’s going to die. When next her eyes open, a beautiful man-creature is holding her in his arms. He’s just too tempting to resist; her very own fallen angel. She wraps herself around his body, determined to have him. But when this angel turns out to be flesh and blood, reality crashes in—she’s seducing a New Species.

Tiger’s shock quickly turns to intense passion when the human female kisses him, despite the fact she’s trying to get his clothes off while he’s engaged in a task force operation. He’s also made it clear he’ll never take a mate. Rather difficult when he and Zandy can’t keep their hands off each other. The taste and feel of his little human just leaves Tiger wanting more.

Laurann Dohner has hit yet another home run!  In fact this tale hits the ball so far out of the park that all you hear from the crowd is “root, root, root for Tiger!”

Laurann Dohner has created yet another hot yet dramatic romance, and continues to enchant her fans again and again with exhilarating, sexually charged escapades and dialogue that will leave one breathless. Ms. Dohner has proven she is one of the best when it comes to creating magnetizing paranormal mixed couples. Her formula for erotic adventure should be bottled and sold with a caution label saying “extremely-hot”. She’d could make millions!

I do suggest reading this series from the beginning as it makes it much easier to follow the character development in Ms. Dohner’s hybrid DNA “magnum opus”. I did find however that Tiger was a great stand-alone story and could be enjoyed as a single reading.

Zandy has had a bad day. Make that a bad month. After going to a local bar to drown her worries, she accidentally becomes a victim of violence when a bar fight breaks out and she is gravely injured in the brawl. Tiger, a new species law enforcer, comes to her rescue. When Zandy awakens in Tiger’s arms, she finds herself staring into the eyes of the sexiest “angel-savior” in the world. She mistakes the gorgeous “Tiger” as a fallen-angel who is taking her to the ever-after. So what would it hurt to kiss him, especially if she is dying anyway? Tiger, who has sworn off all human mates, finds himself extremely attracted to the vulnerable but forward Zandy. When Zandy surprises him with a kiss that turns so hot it sizzles, Tiger knows for the first time that he may have to eat his words about not wanting a human companion.

Later, in a twist of fate, Zandy lands a job working for the New species, thus throwing her into the direct path of Tiger yet again. As you may guess, the chemistry between these two is extremely explosive. Soon a love affair hotter than a rupturing volcano explodes between our two main characters. If that is not enough to crab your attention, then throw in fast paced action, horrendous villains and terrifying scenarios and this book flies off the charts as one of the best novels Laurann Dohner has ever written!

I am absolutely addicted to this series! I found myself practically hyperventilating while waiting for the release of Tiger’s story. When my wait was finally over, I was not disappointed. If I had to pick which story so far in this series is my favorite, this would definitely be in the running.

As all good fairy tales should go, this story starts off with a handsome prince (or shall we say handsome Tiger) coming to the rescue of the damsel in distress. Our heroine is sweet, strong, capable and fun. Our hero is super alpha, extremely sexy and completely loyal. Who wouldn’t want a relationship with a “New Species” male who is totally monogamous with his one and only mate? The outdoor love scenes alone where hotter than the sun that they made love under. I find that I am fanning myself again just from thinking of these scorching moments.

I love that we get to hear from old friends from previous books as well as meeting new ones for future stories. My heart even broke for a character we have yet to see find a new mate, so I am eagerly hoping Vengeance has his day in print soon!

Sizzling with intense dialogue as well as blazing romance, this exciting action adventure captures your imagination and fuels your fantasies for days on end.

Need an Alpha hunk to save your day? Well Tiger just might make you roar out-loud!

Michelle Ross wants to sell her late father’s house and expel the last reminder of her past. But first she has to persuade sexy tenant Nate to move out….

Then Nate’s adorable baby cousin is left on his doorstep. Nate and Michelle might never have known what family is, but this baby needs one—so they’ll need to learn fast!

Whoever says dreams and fairy tales can’t come true hasn’t read this enchanting story about a man and woman at odds with reality. Wishes and hopes certainly can become fact in real life but not in the fanciful way of fantasy books. In, The Sheriff’s Doorstep Baby the problems Michelle and Nate face are relatable, seemingly unfixable and diametrically opposed to their goals in life. But throw in a snow storm, an adorable baby and time to get to know each other and a reader is treated with a delightful relationship coming to fruition. It’s the journey getting to the happily ever after that makes this book a pleasure to read.

The heroine, Michelle, is looking for acceptance. She’s starts off wearing blinders and is hyper-focused on her goals, her life and hiding from facing anything that might hint at an alternate course. She’s hurt, she’s justified and she’d determined to do things her own way, alone and in control. She sounds confused doesn’t she? How can someone who wants acceptance at the same time steadfastly remain determined to do things on her own and view everything else as suspect? Someone who has a lot of hurt to work through. All she needs is to be somehow forced to slow down, to notice and experience life beyond the world that’s trapped in her mind with its skewed perceptions. Enter the innocuous intention to sell a house. Nature takes it from there.

Nate is a man’s man. He’s a character with integrity, honor and the capacity to love a mile wide. He’s strong and stern but he’s got a temper that seems to be triggered by Michelle. Readers figure out early on that it’s a symptom of passion brewing. She’s all wrong for him but there are moments that that fact doesn’t seem to matter and those are the moments to look for. Truly entertaining and meaningful, they propel the attraction towards combustible. Nate is described as a handsome man, but for me, it was his actions towards baby Jack that made him the most alluring and desirable character and cemented his status as hero. I enjoyed his personality and his dialogue.

Dialogue is a strong element in this story, whether it be between the main protagonists or their own private internal debates. Their interaction provided momentum to the conflicts that plague their growing relationship. Even when at times it seems begrudging in nature, they can’t seem to resist each other and they each help the other realize what is truly important in their lives. The heroine comes across as a bit too stubborn and mulish at times and that irked a bit. Obviously that means Michelle has the most growing and changing to do but Nate has to show her the art of compromise. The Sheriff’s Doorstep Baby was written in such a way that it would make an endearing Hallmark Movie to watch on T.V. – with the delightfully sensual and spicy physical capitulation obviously heavily edited for television audiences. Thank goodness readers get the full enjoyable effect.

The writing brings to life a lot of heart, emotion and feelings that make this contemporary romance shine and readers should find what they’re looking for when they want a quality romance. The Sheriff’s Doorstep Baby delivers a solid story and thoroughly entertains. It even has a wonderful warm and fuzzy ending that made me smile. Pick up your own copy and see for yourself.

Professor Jared Trimble’s world has no room for paranormal mumbo-jumbo. When asked to consult on a case involving a series of crossword puzzles, he’s conflicted. Is he a suspect, or an investigator?

While Lia uses her physic gift and follows signs, Jared uses his wits and experience. When the two collide, passions flare and the final clue brings them both into the bullseye of a serial killer’s target.

Tidings of Fear starts off – quite dramatically – in the predator’s mind. We see his trap laid, we understand his desire. Ms. Scott’s opening is cleverly and intriguingly dramatic. This reader was hooked on sentence number one.

We, like Lisa, the missing woman’s sister, are immediately concerned. Lia Morgan will of coursen begin investigating her sister’s disappearance, and she does have an ace in her hands: psychic power. She’s joined by various family and one concerned outsider: Professor Jared Trimble. Jared has a right to be concerned,  since he is also a suspect.

Right away we have the clash of technique: Lisa using paranormal abilities, (or attempting to, to her occasional frustration.) while Jared is a straight-laced man of science. This causes an enormous amount of tension. As if there weren’t intrigue enough, Lisa uncovers disturbing evidence of her sister’s life and various entanglements.

The personalities here alone are enough to keep you reading, but the storyline is also well done, not too complex and continually intriguing. There are certainly unpleasant elements uncovered, but I hated reading some of the points that probably weren’t meant to convey what they actually did (like the good professor apparently not having the ethics to keep his hands off students). Yet, I suppose it gives Trimble that sleazy aura that makes him so useful as a suspect.

The investigation, the clues – heck, even the crossword puzzles and their tricky relating clues, all prove intriguing but sadly, I liked the actual characters less and less. They all had their admirable qualities…and perhaps humanizing faults…but I started to lose interest when I really start to dislike the main characters. It is hard to dismiss the just plain creepy aura that hovers around Trimble, and is never truly addressed.

Scott’s suspenseful romance falls short in some aspects, but it has a well-built and intriguing plot that will appeal to mystery lovers. The cover does nothing to convey the storyline. Ignore that and select this story anyway: it is an enjoyable read.
