“To Conall Brannagh.”

Ewan took the bottle from his father. “Who?”

“Conall Brannagh,” Patrick repeated. “If your mother had chosen him over me, none of us would be here tonight.”

It’s Christmas Eve, and the Collins siblings have given their father a precious gift. All seven have gathered together to spend the night in his apartment above the family pub, the warm, loving home where Patrick and Sunday raised their large brood.

You’ve witnessed each child find their happy-ever-after. Now gather ’round the tree and share a bottle of Jameson with the Collins family while Patrick shares the story of how he won the heart of Sunday, his true love, his soul mate…and the mother of his seven Wild Irish.

From the introduction to the very end, I was smiling. Every word was special and the whole story felt like home. It’s Christmas time and Patrick’s children have given him the best gift ever. They have all returned home to spend Christmas Eve with him at their family home.

Patrick hasn’t been himself lately. All of his children have found love and have started lives of their own. While he’s thrilled and loves his extended family, he misses the closeness of having his children all under one roof. They have always been a very close knit family and he misses them. But it’s not just the loss of his children; it is the time of the year that also brings him down, but also brings him much joy. Christmas was the time of year that he fell in love with his wife, Sunday. The season always brings her to mind and this year around the tree with his children he’s going to share their love story.

What an amazing story. The way it was told, I could feel the love coming off the pages. This is possibly the sweetest short story I’ve ever read. I always knew Patrick loved his wife, but now I learned how they fell in love. I was taken back to the first moment Patrick sets eyes on Sunday. All of Patrick’s joy, sorrow, pain and finally love are wonderfully written. Ms. Carr has written a short story worthy of traditional Irish tales, a treasure to be told for years to come.

Did I want a longer story? Of course; I can never get enough of this huge loving family. Although it is a very short story, it didn’t skimp on plot and the pacing was phenomenal. I felt as if I was sitting around the tree enjoying a sip of Jameson Irish Whiskey right alongside them. I couldn’t have asked for more, and I’m thrilled that Patrick had his moment in the spotlight.

Wild Irish Christmas may be the last in the series, but it could be read at the beginning of the series too. Ms. Carr has written it in a way that nothing is given away of the children’s individual stories. I’m revitalized and want to reread all the novels. I want to fall in love with them all over again. No matter the time of year, this family’s love can be enjoyed all year long.

One title to change his life…

A disgraced son with a dark reputation, William “Ferguson” Avenel is content to live in exile – until his father dies in the scandal of the Season. With rumors of insanity swirling around them, his sisters desperately need a chaperone. Ferguson thinks he’s found the most proper woman in England – and he won’t ruin her, even if he secretly desires the passionate woman trapped beneath a spinster’s cap.

One chance to break the rules…

Lady Madeleine Vaillant can’t face her blighted future without making one glorious memory for herself. In disguise, on a London stage, she finds all the adoration she never felt from the ton. But when she’s nearly recognized, she will do anything to hide her identity – even setting up her actress persona as Ferguson’s mistress. She’ll take the pleasure he offers, but Madeleine won’t lose her heart in the bargain.

One season to fall in love…

Every stolen kiss could lead to discovery, and Ferguson’s old enemies are determined to ruin them both. But as their dangerous passion ignites their hearts and threatens their futures, how can an heiress who dreams of freedom deny the duke who demands her love?

Emotional wounds from early years, inflicted by their parents, have never completely healed for “almost-a –spinster” Madeline Valliant or for Ferguson, the new Duke of Rothwell. To trust love will not be easy for either of them.

Longing for freedom to use and develop her acting talent makes Madeline risk total ruin if discovered. But the adoration she feels from the audience fills a long-time empty spot deep inside—she feels loved, but she also knows this same audience can be fickle.

London Society knows Madeline as the orphan niece of Lady Augusta. She’s a respectable, responsible, dull wallflower unlike her cousin Amelia who has many suitors. Madeline knows she’s considered “unmarriageable”, but it still hurts when the duchess of Harwich and the duke of Rothwell, the notorious rake, ask her to chaperone his twenty-one-year-old twin sisters for the Season so they can find husbands. The thing is, the twins don’t want husbands. They want to have fun and experience life after having been locked away from society by a bitter father.

As Madeline juggles her multifaceted life, she has the support of Amelia and their friend Prudence. These three call themselves the muses of Mayfair for they all pursue secret passions. Amelia writes Gothic romance novels and Prudence writes treatise of academic nature that are widely read and praised by men. They use male pseudonyms to get their work published, but for Madeline to pursue her passion, she must disguise herself as a different person and run the risk of being found out, bringing on her own ruin plus shame for her family. But Amelia and Prudence support her and find Madeline playing “Hamlet” in a theater located in the rough district of Seven Dials to be exciting until blackmail is threatened.

Ferguson, Duke of Rothwell, hates having to return to London and take up the responsibilities of a dukedom. He’s no stranger to the theater district in Seven Dials. His duchy owns property there. Ferguson spent more than his share of time in the rough district during his rakish years ten years ago, before he had finally been sent to Scotland for his outrageous behavior. He’d left behind a few friends, lots of enemies, and one extremely disgruntled ex-mistress.

As Ferguson and Madeline’s lives get entangled in two levels of society, the suspense gets intense with breath-holding events that grip the reader’s attention. His ambivalence about his unexpected position in Society, his desire for Madeline, his guilty feelings about his sister and his half-sisters, and his part in protecting Madeline’s identity, are strong emotions that weave in and out of the story like a magnetic thread. Madeline’s determination, her love for family, her naiveté about what she’s gotten herself into, and her growing love for Ferguson pour through the story with warmth, humor, and more than a little anxiety.

Some of the secondary characters from the most influential in the ton to the greedy theater operator Madame Legrand, the vindictive ex-mistress Caro, and the lecherous Westbrook all up the stakes for Madeline’s ruin at every turn. However, others know Madeline and love her for herself and conspire to keep the “bad guys” at bay while the little house on Dover Street becomes a haven for the two lovers.

Sara Ramsey uses all the trappings of the usual Regency romance, but she creates a plot that insures Heiress Without a Cause is a page turner. Her character development makes the reader feel as if she knows them personally and desires to help get all the misunderstandings and hurts smoothed away. Ms. Ramsey weaves together a fantastic story with bits of humor, some scary situations, magical love scenes, compelling back stories, plus some comedic and other riveting London Society happenings. Heiress Without a Cause has its awesome happy-ever-after, but only after an abundance of bumps along the way.

Sometimes the dead are not easily buried. For almost a hundred and fifty years, the legend of Jonathan and Anna Rose Freeman has titillated the little town of Coventry, Pennsylvania. The property dating back before the Civil War has a new owner. He takes the opportunity to investigate these tales of floating revenants and severed heads. He not only goes to great lengths to uncover the past, but must also seek rational explanations for what is transpiring in and around his home. The information he attains opens his world to yet more mysteries, and to a long dead romance that may yet be filled with unsettled spirits and passionate longing. But what exactly does Anna Rose want from him? Ah, that is the question.

I can’t say I’ve read too many stories with the combination of romance and horror. I was intrigued to read this one just to see how the author handled it and I wasn’t disappointed. Anna Rose is a nicely told ghost story about old loves and the things we hold dear to us. It’s part history, part ghost story, and part love story all rolled into a quick paced tale.

It’s told in the first person by the new owner of Anna Rose’s house which I think added to the story’s depth and the wonderful description of what the character was seeing, hearing and feeling. It’s very atmospheric which is sometimes hard to get across in a book so “Well done” to Mr. Seate.

If you like a good ghost story but only have fifteen or twenty minutes to spare, I say pick this one up because it’s the perfect quick read.

Court reporter Renee Rose found out the hard way that hooking up with a cop is like a bikini wax–it starts off hot, turns painful, and ends in tears.

But when her best friend receives an e-mail, supposedly from her long-dead fiancé, demanding money, Renee knows they need help. Too bad help comes in the form of Detective Anthony Graciano, an annoying, bossy cop who somehow manages to haul Renee’s libido out of dry dock.

Police work is more than a career to Anthony, it’s an obsession. He specializes in cases involving female victims, which leaves him no time for anything else. Until he meets Renee, a delicious mystery he yearns to explore.

As danger closes in, Anthony fights to keep Renee safe despite her tendency to plunge headlong into danger–and her doubts about him. Can she learn to trust his love before it’s too late?

Men don’t come back from the dead. They don’t reappear in someone’s life. And they don’t send email messages. Or do they? Something is definitely off here….Playing Dead begins in a mysterious way, taking readers on a tale of lies and deceit. Are you ready for this venture?

Renee was the type of female lead I’m used to reading. She’s a good friend to Liz, but she’s an annoying heroine. Her stubborn and hard headed attitude got to me quite a few times, especially with her bipolar-like attitude towards Anthony, the hero. I wanted to jump inside the story, take her by the shoulders, and shake some sense into her! If the author was shooting for a character that brought out real emotions in the reader, then she was right on target with Renee. I did notice she has a soft spot for one particular character in the book, other than Liz, so she didn’t make me completely crazy.

Anthony, a detective, has a lot of wit and charm to him. He doesn’t always seem to take his role seriously, but I suppose in a job like his, a man needs a little humor more often than not. I felt bad for him, going after a woman who seemed to slip away from his every move. He sure sticks with what he wants, though, because he kept trying even though it seemed futile.

The premise of the story is what really kept me going. I couldn’t always feel for the characters, other than Liz, and I wished things turned out better for her. She was the one I would have loved to read more about, since the story seemed more focused on her life. There were definite surprises and twists in the story that I never imagined would unfold. The authors writing is fresh and fun. Playing Dead is full of mystery and fun. It’s light on suspense, but a great read overall.

If you like your stories mysterious and some moments that are bound to get a smile out of you, Playing Dead is the perfect book. Don’t play around, get a copy today!

Our journey began in fire…

Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness—beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white-hot. I was drawn to him as I’d never been to anything or anyone in my life. I craved his touch like a drug, even knowing it would weaken me. I was flawed and damaged, and he opened those cracks in me so easily…

Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other’s most private wounds… and desires.

The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn’t tear us apart…

Rarely have I read a book that made me feel so much. I experienced a kaleidoscope of emotions while reading this story. At times it was pity, then annoyance, to heartbreak and sheer joy. And to top it all off, this book sizzled.

I’m not going to lie and say the comparisons to another novel didn’t pique my interest with this book. But I’m not here to review that other work, I am here to share my feelings for Bared to You. Are there similarities? Sure, but let’s be honest with ourselves. If you’re an avid romance reader, you’ve come across a book or two that reminds you of another book or two. How many times can an Alpha male be written? Or a vampire? Or a shifter? When something is receiving so much attention, it’s impossible not to be compared. But that’s grossly unfair to this book and the other.

First we meet Eva, a sweet down to earth woman who comes from money, thanks to her mother’s advantageous marriages. Despite never wanting for anything, she decides to go to college and make her way in the world by getting a job. Shocking, I know. As the book progresses you understand why she needs this standard of normalcy. It’s not a want, but an absolute need.

We also get to meet Cary, a super sexy up and coming model who is Eva’s brother from another mother. But in actuality they are each other’s support system. And if ever two people needed one other, it was these two. They are the ones who call it when the other has their head too far up someplace it shouldn’t be. For all the reasons that they were brought together, they were extremely lucky to have the relationship they did.

And then there’s Gideon. Oh, dark and dangerous Gideon. While he’s compared to another fictional who is also dark and dangerous, I felt Gideon is very much different. Is he controlling, of course. However, Gideon shuts down his emotions. Does it affect his personality? Absolutely, but Gideon builds a wall so thick that he’s almost childlike when it comes to emotions of the heart. Because he’s never had them as an adult. Until he meets Eva.

“As he stared back, he altered…as if a shield slid away from his eyes, revealing a scorching force of will that sucked the air from my lungs. The intense magnetism he exuded grew in strength, becoming a near tangible impression of vibrant and unrelenting power.” I shivered a little at this. Here you see he’s a dominant person, you feel it. Eva responds to it, even if she’s terrified by her reaction.

Together, they are explosive. Their love making, their fast growing emotions, their possessiveness, their everything is scorching. From the first time they touch until the last page, no matter how tumultuous their relationship is, it’s the passion that grips you. Gideon and Eva are almost too passionate for their own good. They break self imposed rules, experience firsts together, and live in a non-structured Dominate/submissive relationship.

I wanted to point out that I listed ‘forced seduction’ as an element of this book. It’s not what I think of as hard core forced seduction, but more as seduction used to bend Eva to Gideon’s will. He uses his arsenal of knowledge when it comes to Eva to bend her his will, or stop a fight, or whenever there’s something they are having a hard time dealing with. There were a few times where I felt myself go “ummm”, so I felt it would be better to safe than sorry.

In closing, I adored this book for so many reasons. I can’t tell you the last time I blushed from my neck to the roots of my hair. There’s a scene that just flat out floored me, and I read it three times to make sure I got all the details in my highly imaginative mind. Ms. Sylvia Day did a fantastic job with this. The writing was superb, the characters flawed, overall just stellar work. I will be anxiously awaiting Deeper in You when it releases where we will be able to continue the story of Gideon and Eva.

There’s a Sleuth on the loose… Part-time medical receptionist, part-time jewelry crafter, Gailynn MacDonald thinks she knows everything about everyone in Hum Harbour, Nova Scotia. That’s the way she likes it. But when her former employer Doc Campbell turns up dead aboard his beached yacht, and her sister-in-law becomes the prime suspect, quirky, over-excitable Gailynn vows to unmask the killer. With Geoff Grant, Doc’s handsome replacement, by her side Gailynn uncovers secrets and confronts childhood fears. And in the process she discovers that catching a killer is a lot like crafting her seaglass jewelry… it’s all in the details.

Doc always did like to drink but no one expected to find him dead on his boat the day after he had retired and taken off for the Caribbean.

This author chose a fictitious harbor in Nova Scotia for her setting in this story. She does an excellent job of painting you a picture with her words so you feel just like you’re there on the waterfront. I enjoyed her term of “versatile weather”. You can get five kinds in one day in the Northwest and I doubt the east coast is any different.

Ms. Self creates a main female character that’s a bit shy and insecure but knows what she wants to do with her life. She has a new boss she resents because he got the business when her friend, Lori, was planning on buying it. Her brother is a policeman who wants to become a RCMP, but she’s not sure about his investigative talents. When she learns the doctor was murdered, she starts to get involved in the doctor’s past and town secrets.

The plot moves along well and there are red herrings on the way, as well as bad feelings everywhere as Gai keeps stirring up the past and snooping in the present. Ms. Self gives you more than one suspect and everyone seems to be guilty of something. As the story progresses, the author gives you a few clues here and there. I suspected the murderer before Gai found it out. That was in line with the type of character Gai was, though, so I couldn’t fault her for not thinking the way I did.

One of my favorite parts of this story was the romance between Gai and the new doctor, Geoff. They had some differences and some misunderstandings, but good communication between them was settling that down. I’ll be looking forward to the next in this series to see how the relationship progresses and if Andrew ever makes it to being an RCMP. Ms. Self makes you care about her characters and her stories are tempting enough to make you return. Why not get a copy of this cozy mystery and see if you can outguess Gai on the murderer?

Can a fugitive budding sorceress and her brilliant cat escape the enraged mob pursuing them?

An outburst of her newly awakened, uncontrolled sorcery talent made twelve-year-old Dory a fugitive. Trouble, her indomitable cat, led her into a walled garden minutes ahead of the mob pursuing her. There they encountered the owner, Martin, a powerful sorcerer. He listened to their story in growing excitement and offered to teach and conceal his guest – but the price would be high.

This book has a little bit of everything:  a mystery, a young girl running from a bad crowd and paranormal elements. And let’s not forget a clever cat. For anyone who knows these animals well, the author did a top notch job incorporating everything feline into the character and story. Despite being seemingly targeted toward a young adult audience, I think all ages will enjoy this story.

Trouble The Cat has two parts and I won’t spoil it by telling you about the second half but let’s just say it had me reading on to find out what happened to Dory and Trouble. The pacing is fast, the dialogue very natural sounding and the second part of the story has lots of action that seems to quicken the pace even more.

I found Trouble The Cat intriguing even if it wasn’t intended for an adult audience. I liked both the human and animal characters and will definitely be looking out for more books featuring this duo. It’s one to put on your must read list if you like paranormal stories and adore cats.

Despite their unease, the colonists accept the children as their own, until one couple decide they cannot cope and take matters into their own hands. This is Max’s version of the story of what the couple do and how they and the other colonists cope with the aftermath.

The author has written of the dangers and unease confronting the people of Benefis but kept the solution hidden. Only at the end does the author reveal the full details of the story. Keeping the reader interested in this way is a difficult thing for an author to do but Jay Caselberg has achieved this with a touch of finesse.

The town council is about to approve the final plans for the mall.

When Gray Daniels walks into her shop, Greta is immediately attracted to his rugged good looks and midnight blue eyes, until she learns he’s Stephanie Harwood’s fianc?. She’s furious to find they’ve tricked her into a publicity stunt aimed at garnering support for the mall. So now her little war has a new front: Gray Daniels. If only she could also fight her growing attraction to him.

A knock on the door brings a return of old danger, and Greta must now put aside her anguish over the house to discover if she’s at last capable of looking the past in the eye and overcoming it—and if she’s finally free to love again.

This is Greta Kendall’s last chance to save her home. She’s been fighting for two years against a woman – Stephanie Harwood – who will do anything it takes to evict Greta and bulldoze her beautiful house. With time running out and her mother running her ragged, Greta’s at her wit’s end to save her home and her business before it’s too late. Which will be the victor – her Queen Anne Victorian or the new shopping mall? Only time will tell.

I love a good, complex character. Greta Kendall has so much going on, both out in the open and under the surface that you can’t help but want to get to know her better. The relationship she has with her aging mother only makes her even more likable. The twists and turns in both her life and her emotional state create an intensely emotional story that will really draw out your own feelings. She’s representative of so many women in the real world, the ones that look like they have it all together, but are actually falling apart when no one’s looking.

Gray Daniels is every woman’s dream man in the flesh – intelligent, handsome and successful. It’s just too bad he’s sleeping with the enemy – Stephanie Harwood. But from the very beginning, you realize that Gray is everything he seems, even if it all seems too good to be true. He’s considerate, understanding and an all-around good guy. The fact that he gets what she’s going through only sweetens the deal, as far as I’m concerned. Gray is definitely the perfect guy to help Greta work through the trauma of her past and get her to love again. I hated the fact that he kept being forced to take the blame for the things his fiancée was doing to Greta, although you can’t blame Greta for feeling the way she does.

The Gingerbread House is a sweet, intense story about finding real love against the odds. Greta and Gray make a beautiful, fun couple who not only understand each other, but enjoy each other as well. The author’s easy style helps the story flow, carrying you along with it as it develops. A wonderfully emotional journey that has a very happy and a bit surprising end.
