Adopting the guise of a buttoned-up spinster is nothing new for Chloe Hardwick. But under the watchful eye of her unnervingly handsome employer, the Marquess of Marland, for the first time Chloe yearns to be unbuttoned! Yet he sees her only as his assistant, the efficient Hardwick—not as Chloe the woman.

Determined to escape Braedon’s cold detachment, Chloe leaves. And when he pursues her to London, determined to entice her back, Braedon is utterly unprepared for what he finds there—the real Chloe Hardwick….

Yanking off the buttons was never this exciting or sexy.

I’m still new to historical romance and wasn’t much of a fan. I’ve since changed my stance on historicals. Why? Because I read Unbuttoning Miss Hardwick. Ms. Marlowe’s words flow from the page. I felt like I was right there rushing down the road in the phaeton, feeling the wind whipping my hair. I could see the characters well and am looking for my own Braedon. Goodness, he is yummy.

There are many layers to this novel. Peeling them back was a lot of fun. Chloe is very complicated. Once her back story comes to the forefront, I was able to fully respect her. I loved the line about her buttons and what happens to them. I’ll leave it at that because it’s a great little surprise. Braedon, as sexy as he was, drove me berserk more than a few times. I understood his motivations well. Ms. Marlowe does a great job of layering him. But what irritated me about him was how he held back. Like I said, I understood it and liked how his back story was unfolded. Getting irritated with him was a good thing because it got me thinking about him long after the book closed. That doesn’t happen often, so I chalk it up to Ms. Marlowe’s excellent story telling.

My favorite character was the boy. I won’t go into much detail about him, but I liked the way he was worked into the story and how he played a part in the ending. Very nice.

The sensuality was the right amount. Enough was left to the imagination that I could picture what happened and fill in the blanks the way I wanted. Loved it.

If you want a romance that’s heavy on suspense, emotion and filled with characters you won’t forget, then this book is for you.

THE SECRETS SHE’S UNCOVERING WILL BE HIS TO KEEP…

Centuries ago, when their ship crashed to Earth, paranormals of all types settled secretly into our world, quietly going about their business with humans none the wiser. Self–ruling and careful to stay below the radar, all is threatened when Valkyrie archaeologist Lorin Schlessinger and her werewolf geologist partner Gabe Lupinsky inadvertently draw evil attention to Earth and its treasured natural resources.

As the threat intensifies, Lorin and Gabe struggle to contain the chaos they’ve unleashed, and to resist their explosive mutual attraction …

If you can dream up the paranormal creatures, then you’ll find them in this book.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when I nabbed this book. I hadn’t read the first in the series, but I love a good paranormal, so I took the leap. I’m glad I did. Ms. Hogan’s book has a LOT going for it. The writing was smooth and drew me in right away. I could see the world the characters moved around in. What was there intrigued me and has me waiting for the next book with bated breath.

I have to admit, Lorin and Gabe are complicated characters. There’s so much more to them than meets the eye. Lorin is an archeologist and a princess. Yeah, what a combination. She loves with all her heart and when it comes to Gabe, she goes at it 110%. Gabe is more than his furry package. He lives to keep her safe, even if it means with sensual methods. It was fun to read them falling in love and feeling the passion.

That all said, I have to reiterate that this is the second book in the series. I mention this because there are a LOT of characters. If you haven’t read the first book (I hadn’t), then not knowing who everyone was got quite complicated. There was backstory also that I really wanted explained. What happened to the ship and the captain? A little more recap might have been a good thing here. I also thought there should have been more to the ending than was there, which I’m hoping means there’s a third book in the works. I enjoyed the book without knowing who everyone was, but I’m sure it would be fantastic to those who read both books.

Still, I’m glad I read this book and highly recommend Gabe and Lorin’s story to those who love paranormal. I can’t wait for the next book.

Innocently embroiled in naval espionage Lucy Mainwaring sails on board RMS Titanic – will she and the man she loves survive?

Drawn into espionage by navy officer Edwin Hardie, Lucy Mainwaring is advised by her diplomat uncle, who is Hardie’s superior, to accept Edwin’s marriage proposal. Believing the offer, although honourable, is made without true affection, she refuses him but agrees to get to know him better during an Atlantic voyage to a peace conference in America. They embark on RMS Titanic but who will reach New York?

Being penniless and wanting to marry for love seem mutually exclusive, but for Lucy Mainwaring, the daughter of a country clergyman, her dreams might just come true.

Lucy is invited to her wealthy aunt’s and uncle’s London home for a season. Sir Leyster and Lady Grant are determined to see her make a good match, even though she has no money. While there she meets handsome Lt. Commander Edwin Hardie, who is attached to Sir Leyster at the Admiralty. It’s instant attraction for Lucy, but she’s convinced a man like Edwin couldn’t possibly be interested in the Grants’ poor relation.

One night Lucy and Hardie overhear a conversation concerning State secrets not meant for their ears, and to protect Lucy, Hardie pulls her into a lovers’ embrace. Soon, word is out that she’s been compromised. Hardie, being a gentleman, asks her to marry him, but Lucy can only marry a man who truly loves her, and refuses. Cousin Cecilly, however, accepts the proposal of Frank Johnson, a wealthy American, and the family prepares to embark on a voyage to New York. The staterooms on board the White Star Line RMS Titanic have been purchased by Cecily’s fiancé and serve a dual purpose: it gives the Grants an opportunity to meet Frank’s parents and offers protection to Lucy and Hardie, both of whom Sir Leyster feels may be in danger.

At the last moment, Frank learns his father is ill and he’s forced to catch an earlier liner back to New York. Another American, William Marshall appears to be the beneficiary of Johnson’s ticket. As the voyage progresses, Hardie seems to want Lucy’s company, but he’s rather close-mouthed and she wonders if the companionship is out of a sense of duty to Leyster or because he cares for her. Also, the American, Marshall, takes an interest in Lucy who likes him as a friend, despite warnings from Hardie that the man is a philanderer and not to be trusted.

Kudos to Ms. Dunwell for a fairly accurate portrayal of passenger life aboard an ocean liner. Her plot was plausible enough for this reviewer to suspend her disbelief and lose herself in the story. Cousin Cecily was a bit of a twit, albeit a kind-hearted one. Lucy was strong and practical, and Hardie was suitably gallant, though a little too close-mouthed about his true feelings.

There seemed to be the right amount of introspection, though occasionally in the beginning there was a bit too much “tell” and not enough “show”, I caught only a few errors. Ms. Dunwell did her homework. The scenes aboard the Titanic seemed realistic and immensely readable.

All in all, a nicely paced, enjoyable story.

A Ferrara should never share a bed with a Baracchi—however high the stakes!

Dark-hearted Santino Ferrara has always remembered how long-legged, hot-tempered Fia Baracchi felt in his arms—much to his frustration. Then a million-dollar business deal throws them together, and keeping his distance is no longer an option.

But Fia is living a lie. If it’s ever discovered that her precious little son is Santino’s heir, she’ll be disowned—their families’ feud is legendary! But her real fear? That she can’t forget the scorching memories of her one night with the enemy—and that she still craves more.…

I thought that Cristiano was a tough nut to crack but his brother, Santo has a more challenging situation to deal with in The Forbidden Ferrara as readers are treated to an unusual spin in this engaging romance. You know the old saying, “The grass is always greener on the other side”? In this story it’s the truth and the conflict is compelling and fascinating.

Imagine a woman who yearns for a family life filled with love, affection and unconditional support. What she grew up with was pure dysfunction at its harshest; add in a poisonous feud between that perfect family and her own and readers will find a woman worth reading about. Fia’s strength of character comes through by her determination and focus in breaking the toxic shackles that bind her. She has reasons for her single minded pursuit of her ideal life and it becomes all too clear when both protagonists are together.

The way Santo is written fascinated me. At first, it was all about him; his feelings, his interpretations and how he justified his resulting actions. He feels strongly, passionately and hotly and yet he’s a man to be respected because no matter how livid he became, he remained rational, in control and never struck out in a physically vicious manner. He does have a sharp tongue though. I suppose calling him rational may be giving him too much credit. He’s gobsmacked in this story and watching him transition from 100% business to 100% personal was quite fun. Then the author has him transitioning to seeing the other side of the coin and, being the man he is, he admitted his fallibility – sort of. It’s amazing how men of wealth and power can take a messy situation and iron it out with authority. Oh, to have that kind of chutzpah.

Ms. Morgan allows a reader to be in both Fia and Santo’s heads, and through their internal dialogues I was able to see how their relationship changed from viewing each other as adversaries to accomplices. It wasn’t an easy road to traverse because there are a few presumptions, assumptions and a lot of hard feelings to work through. The author made their emotional conflict believable and relatable. Certainly, the impetus for their forced collaboration was powerful and very dramatic. Yet, for all the heartache, uncertainty and mixed-up communication, their physical attraction could not be denied. That was made very clear to me. Their bodies knew what their minds could not accept. At least, not until all the clutter from that ages old family squabble gets sorted out. How that happens was not only a surprise for me, but a shock to Fia, the heroine. It was one of the nicest surprises in the story and I liked the twist.

It’s not all strife and stress. At times Santo is delightful as a puppy, eager to please and so excited … well, excited puppies have accidents. Over eager men make blunders and gaffs of epic proportions and Santo, the shark of a businessman, gets a ‘goober’ award for some of his choices. He alternates between being wonderful and romantic to being a clueless male. Very fun to watch.

The most romantic element came from making a dream come true. This isn’t a fairy tale so it wasn’t a simple, magical fix. It was messy, volatile and had many ups and downs but the ultimate payoff made reading this story worth every flip of the page. I even enjoyed the brief cameos of Dani, Santo’s sister and his older brother, Cristiano. This book is a standalone read, but since I read the previous one, it was nice to see how the other couple was doing – like a love check-up.

The Forbidden Ferrara once again illustrates why Ms. Morgan is one of my favorite authors. She writes about people that feel, that triumph over seemingly impossible odds, and celebrates the joys of new-found love. It’s a spicy sweet romance with thorns that kept me glued to its pages until the final love-filled moments. It’s an enjoyable read.

“Wanted: one husband, not too particular. Small dowry, several books, sundry furnishings, and elderly aunt included. Idlers, time-wasters, and gentleman with other attachments need not apply.”—Miss Sophie Valentine

A SCANDALOUS LADY

Sophie Valentine knew placing an ad for a husband in the Farmers Gazette would bring her trouble-and she was right. When the darkly handsome, arrogantly charming Lazarus Kane shows up on her doorstep, the nosy residents of Sydney Dovedale are thrown into a gossiping tizzy. After all, it’s common knowledge that Sophie is a young lady In Need of Firmer Direction. But even Sophie isn’t so scandalous as to marry a complete stranger. .. is she?

SEEKS HANDSOME STRANGER

Lazarus Kane has been searching for Sophie half of his life. She may not remember him, but he could never forget her. But the past is a dangerous thing, and it’s best if his remains secret if he wants to tempt Sophie with …

A MOST IMPROPER PROPOSAL

Sophie has always been a bit impetuous and full of the devil. She’s tried to act properly, but it never lasts. And now she’s almost thirty and still unattached.

Ms. Fresina’s story follows the habits of men back in this era. A woman can make no decisions on her own; she either lives with a husband or a married relative. She owns no property. The author makes her main character, Sophia, a woman who will not be controlled and who fights against her female constraints. She cares not what Henry, her brother says. Half the time when she acts out inappropriately it’s in retaliation for the way she’s treated in Henry’s household. That’s why she wrote the advertisement for the paper.

One of my favorite parts of the book is in regards to the ad Sophie places. This was a really clever plot ploy that worked out well for the characters. A portion of the ad is mentioned in the blurb. After you read it I think you’ll see why Sophie is considered improper.

Not only does the author bring Sophie a suitor from her advertisement, Ms. Fresina adds in her old beau from earlier days. This effectively adds conflict because the village and brother think she should marry her old beau. Sophie is trying to decide which suitor would be the right choice for her and gossip runs rampant as the two suitors face off.

This is a busy story that flows well and shows the challenges of the time to marry for love. Money and property were the driving factors then, and women were supposed to do what they were told. I was never very good at that and neither was Sophie so it was easy for me to relate to her and made me empathetic with her problems. There is a little intrigue in the story, too, because Lazarus Kane has come out of nowhere and has no family. His background is interesting and adds another element of tension to a good love story.

Why not get yourself a copy, travel back to the past and watch Sophie fight for what she wants? It’s well worth the read.

She wants a piece of his rock. He needs her, rock steady, in his heart.

Tess Sheridan won’t let anything stop her from making partner at a prestigious law firm, especially her notoriously soft heart. The result? She’s a handful of clients away from getting her name on that brass plate. And she hasn’t had sex in over a year.

When her best friend dares her to test-drive her erotic fantasies with a gorgeous stranger, she figures, why not? Loosening the reins will give her inner nympho some well-deserved pampering without jeopardizing her career goals.

Zach Halliday has enjoyed his bad-boy reputation to the fullest, but now it’s time to leave the relative safety of the family corporation and prove he can stand on his own in the business world. That doesn’t mean he’ll pass up an opportunity for some incredible phone sex with the beautiful strawberry blonde he met in a bar.

When business overlaps with the bedroom, Zach sees something special in Tess and is determined to convince her he’s the man she needs, anytime, anyplace. She can backpedal, but come hell or high-climbing-wall, he wants the fascinating, complicated sex bomb in his bed. Over and over again…

Poised, professional, and prepared is the recipe by which Teresa Sheridan plans on making partner at the law firm she works for. She’s all business until a night out with her best friend, one too many drinks, and a dare brings out her inner nympho. Not one to say no to a dare she accepts the challenge all the while looking for loopholes in the agreement. Soon after, it’s all Tess can do to stop embarrassing herself further with the total hottie by the bar. However, a bet’s a bet and Tess hates to lose, but her heart wasn’t part of the bargain.

Zach wasn’t about to say no to the strawberry blonde wearing business clothes smelling slightly of alcohol. Looks can be deceiving and Zach, more than anyone, knew that. Her unexpected proposition had him definitely intrigued and highly aroused. However, Zach’s seemingly simplistic life of women and money gets complicated with the addition of Tess and her new “lawyerly” role with his father’s company. Doesn’t mean they can’t have some fun if she’s willing. Yet, all too soon, having fun with Tess isn’t enough – not nearly.

There are so many deliciously sexy and sensual activities in this story that are sure to please the inner nympho of many readers. The story does as the title suggests and gets a little wild with the sex scenes. Role-playing, phone sex, a voyeuristic fantasy while masturbating, and lots and lots of foreplay – office, closet, a magazine and food. Tess and Zach are fun and teasing to read during these moments and aren’t into extremes, so for them it’s about exploration. The seriousness comes into play outside of the bedroom and how they emotionally evolve into their relationship.

Tess is the uptight lawyer who hasn’t had sex in a while, but she’s afraid of commitment because of her parents’ mistakes. So she meets always fun and adventurous Zach who was supposed to be her sex-with-no-strings kind of guy. Zach didn’t anticipate, though, the effect the right woman would have on his commitment-shy heart. That premise leads to great character dynamics and I loved that the male lead acknowledges his feelings and then makes a plan of attack. I did feel kind of cheated without the majority focus being on Tess and Zach. The secondary characters of Tess’s best friend and Zach’s older brother are a bit distracting as they are interjected throughout the story. I enjoyed reading about these two characters and their own dysfunctional quirks, but the switching of point-of-views was just a tad frustrating. They definitely have a story and it would have been great to read it separately from this one.

The storyline picks up quickly in the beginning and keeps moving with a few small unexpected twists. Great intro for a new-to-me author that I will definitely be checking out again. Readers who like their romances extra racy should check this one out.

Ms. Webnar’s book hooked me from page one and didn’t let go. The writing flowed well. The more pages I turned, the more I wanted to know what would happened next.

I liked that even though this was a crime book, complete with a nasty villain, the violence wasn’t graphic. Readers who want suspense without gore will appreciate this book. I also enjoyed the attention to detail. I felt like I was right there in the Florida Keys while I read the book. Kudos to Ms. Webnar for her research on the area. I do have to mention this point: with some books, it’s easy to figure out who did it. Not this book! Ms. Webnar kept me on the edge of my seat, not sure who was the bad guy and needing to find out. I did enjoy the sparing between Chad and Merri. They don’t want to be together and yet, I felt their mutual attraction. Ms. Webnar built the tension between them well. Both are great characters and I cheered them on, hoping they’d get their happily ever after. I wasn’t disappointed.

When sexy wannabe-demon, Destiny Carter, is kicked out of Hell, she lands in Ft. Worth, Texas with one week to corrupt a soul. Or else. She slips into a slinky red dress, and heads straight for the delicious, corruptible looking cowboy at the bar.

But Chance Bellew has his own agenda-saving souls. He’s not your typical angel. He’s a nephilim, to be exact. Centuries ago, angels came down from Heaven and mated with mortal women. When the women bore children, a new race was created. Immortals with powers—demigods, nephilim.

But the children don’t live by the same rules as mortals, or that of the typical, robe-wearing, bright light-surrounding-them angels. Hell, most of the time the nephilim are breaking the rules, and making up new ones as they go. As long as they don’t cross over to the dark side, everyone pretty much stays out of their way.

But sometimes a demon-in-training, who looks like Destiny, comes along and all Hell breaks loose.

Breaking loose has never been this hot.

I love the work of Karen Kelley. When I saw this book was up for review, I jumped on it. I’m glad I did. This book was HOT. That pretty well sums it up. HOT. Ms Kelley’s story flowed well. I didn’t feel jarred even when there was a lot of sex. I know, this is an erotic work, but there is a lot of sex. Since Destiny is a demon, I expected nothing less.

This book is a story of second chances and redemption. I identified with Destiny. She’s had it rough and is doing the best with what she’s got. Although her story is heartbreaking, part of it was lost in the amounts of sex. I like sex in a book, but sometimes I wanted to skip ahead. Don’t get me wrong. The sex is hot, but I wanted more plot.

Then there’s Chance. I really liked him, but I wanted more of him. I wanted to see what went on in his head. He’s smoldering hot and consumed by his passion for Destiny, even though she’s forbidden fruit and yet…I didn’t feel as much as I’d have liked. He is drool-worthy, though and I could’ve read the descriptions of him over and over. Yum. Where can I find a nephilim of my own?

If you want a story with a demon trying to become a better person, then this might be the book for you. If you want lots of sex and a hero to drool over, then it really might be for you. Pick up a copy.

Someone has been stealing priceless Greek artifacts and it’s Alex Leonidis’ job to uncover the thief. His prime suspect is beautiful archaeological graduate student, Francie Vasileiou. His plan is to join in an archaeological dig and catch her in the act. All he has to do is keep his mind on his job, and not on the way his lovely suspect warms his heart. He’s learned the hard way not to trust fragile-looking women who seem to need his help.

Francie wants to get her PhD and become an archaeologist, like her famous father. The sudden invitation to participate in a dig on the beautiful Greek island of Paros is a wonderful opportunity. She has no time for distractions like Alex, the handsome Project Director. Experience has taught her to stay clear of handsome, charismatic Greek men.

On the shores of the Aegean Sea, Alex and Francie work together, searching for treasures from Greece’s past. While pursuing their goals, they discover some of the truths they had believed to be carved in stone may have been flawed.

Leap into the Aegean Sea, the adventure of a lifetime, and maybe even true love in Patricia Kiyono’s romance, Aegean Intrigue.

This one has it all. The backdrop is utterly, perfectly romantic; Athens, overshadowed by Mount Olympus and full of history. The details are be-there perfect, with an exotic and definitely romantic aura throughout. You feel caressed by the warm breezes, and lift your eyes as if you too, could look out over the ruins of the Acropolis.

It seems the perfect place in all the world for Francie Vasileiou, college archaeology student, to complete her studies. Lovely setting, a chance to work off her living arrangements, and a good friend she can rely on.  What could be better? The last thing we expect is for a certain type of ugliness to ruin such a perfect setting, and style of living, but one man mars it all.

Francie, perhaps a tiny bit suspicious, was, in fact, rightfully suspicious of her ‘friend’. Still, she finds help from an unexpected source – the mysterious Alex Leonidis. Of course, he seems a shining knight in his first appearance, yet we discover he has his own agenda immediately. Danger and intrigue clearly go hand in hand here…but can we also hope for love?

We readers might feel a tingling of hope in the early stages, however, each of the main characters has their own motivation. Somehow, they also manage to bring out the worst in one another. In addition, the missing artifacts – and some of the facts about those items – are more than intriguing, they introduce a serious threat. So, the conversations between the two start off more confrontational than romantic. And, those conversations are absolutely riveting and totally believable.

Back-story details, although necessary, seriously slow the story in places. Alex’ reflections about the case, a woman, and his wonderful mother all drag. Old loves have left both, separately, less trusting in some manner. This small portion is oddly predictable, in a story that is otherwise fresh and spirited. This is but a small point, however, and it didn’t stop me from reading on.

Do read: from the first moments when the group takes to camping out at the dig site, even if you had never thought to visit Athens, you will wish you were there. Even the food brings an authentic flavor to Aegean Intrigue. Long before you are halfway through, you’ll be wishing for a taste of the spicy spetzofai and a to be drinking wine from a paper cup. This story is just as full of flavor and a great read.

What better way for him to lend a hand than through the Dreams Come True Foundation? But helping Ava means earning her trust…and having faith that dreams of healing and family just might become reality.

Believers, but with God on the outskirts of their lives, both Ava Darnell and Quinn O’Neill struggle with life. Neither seems to feel they will ever love or be loved again.

Ava lost her ability to trust when her husband secretly lost their saving in a pyramid scheme before he died. Alone, Ava struggles with tight finances and taking care of her son Brandon who has Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Even through Brandon is in remission, she watches him closely, so closely she stifles his efforts to grow up and do things like other kids his age do. His rebellion and her need to control create conflicts that are so characteristic of teenagers yet so heart-wrenching because of his health and their limited funds to get him the things he wants so badly.

Quinn O’Neill, certainly not strapped for money, tries to find a respite from guilt, by using his money to help others. He’d been so focused on success, money, and power; he’d neglected his wife and son. Not until they were killed in a car accident did he realize what he had become. His guilt about them and the insurance money he received had overwhelmed him. He stepped away from life as he had known it and secretly helped others while staying to himself—almost a recluse. Then Ava Darnell backed into his SUV. As Ava and Quinn’s lives get entangled, both reevaluate their actions, motivations. Long-dormant emotions surge back to life.

Gail Gaymer Martin takes these two characters that seem only mildly interesting and brings them into a relationship that bubbles with energy and anticipation. She blends emotional and spiritual awakening so that Ava and Quinn are not just going through the motions of living but are evolving into vibrant individuals. She takes them from muddling their way through life, trying to do everything alone to letting God direct their efforts; thereby moving from just existing with lots of worry to living with joy and love.

The reader gets to enjoy a vicarious journey with them. As Ava eases her tight grip on trying to control all aspects her and Brandon’s lives, she finds her faith in God emerging and influencing her decisions. Consequently, her much-loved, but “mother-smothered” teenager gets a little freedom to inch his way into manhood.

As Quinn finds his way from his self-imposed isolation to a meaningful, loving relationship, the reader is privy to the struggles of a man of wealth and power letting God lead in decisions. His patience with Ava’s lack of trust is amazing.

At times the inspirational aspects seem a little “preachy” and overdone, but one of my favorite scriptures, Jeremiah 29:11, is a theme resonating through the story. This scripture comes to life as Ava and Quinn, by the grace of God, work through a myriad of issues and find their way from a captivity of their own making to their happy-ever-after.

Ms. Martin’s smooth writing style and poignant metaphors make A Dream of His Own a joy to read.
