Jake Falconer, a hard-boiled detective in Echo City, is struggling with his love of booze, a square ex (and a cop, no less) he can’t get over, and a murdered partner. In sashays Sloane, an homme fatal whose twin brother has gone missing. The search leads them to a sex club used for blackmailing the city’s most powerful, and soon Jake finds himself hip deep in sex and danger—it’s a good thing he’s no stranger to slogging through either.

Fans of classic Film Noir and hard hitting private detectives of old will get a kick out this little treat, The Little Death.

Many years ago, my great-aunt gave me an old dime store novel by Mickey Spillane who created an indelible character well loved by mystery readers, Mike Hammer. That character was very distrustful of people no matter the profession. Everyone was suspect and the flavor was always smoky, dark and gritty as the character walked within the dark gray areas of society. Ms. Speed has provided her own version of that misanthropic P.I. in the form of Jake Falconer. If the author has set out to capture the flavor of a man disenchanted with life but who keeps on going just to tweak the noses of ‘authority’, then she’s succeeded.

Jake is a hard man. He drinks like a sotted fish, makes no apologies for his appearance or attitude and is his own worst enemy. It was hard to be sympathetic towards him because he’s so ornery but by the same token it’s why I liked him. He’s a smart-mouthed tough-guy who hides any softer feelings with acerbic wit and insults and yet, he’s fair and has a code of honor and ethics all his own. And, he’s in love. But he won’t ever say the words. There was just something about his character that I enjoyed that I can’t quite put my finger on. Maybe it was because he wasn’t all pretty and perfect and vanilla. He has vices, he has a dubious sexual code, meaning, if there’s an itch, it’s meant to be scratched, and he is a bit slovenly. He’s certainly not my ideal candidate for a white-knight-on-a-horse hero but he is a hero nonetheless; it’s just that his armor is a bit tarnished, dented and well worn.

The plot is basic – who is trying to kill who and why? It’s a mystery with lots of action, mostly poor Jake getting the business end of a fist or two, or three. The secondary characters flit in and out of chapters providing motivation, red herrings and conflict. The romance angle is more romantic elements than outright romance. It has helped saved countless relationships by allowing tadalafil 20mg couples have longer sex, better orgasms and revitalizing their sex life. Dosage new.castillodeprincesas.com cialis tablets australia The dosage is quite simple for the men. Chocolate: Chocolate is considered generic levitra as the king of Tongkat Ali Dr. It leads to Addiction Kamagra does not have any addictive properties. generic cheap viagra Kyle is the man who actually holds Jake’s heart but for some reason he keeps the hunky cop at a distance. That adds another level to the hero’s character – emotionally tortured individual who doesn’t think he’s good enough to be loved. Based on what I read, he certainly doesn’t make it easy but I think loving Jake would be worth it, if you had a thick skin. And, I do have hope for him because when he kisses Kyle, the words he uses told me what I needed to hear.

The novella is written in first person point of view and the dialogue is as hard-hitting as one would expect from a man who does what he does for a profession. Jake and Kyle do physically connect but Jake just fills a reader in — the scenes are behind closed doors. He’s private that way. His delivery reminded me of the old Dragnet T.V. series, “Just the facts, Ma’am”.

This tale is fast moving and the author has some descriptive passages that read like poetry. Not flowery mind you, more like testosterone laden and filled with action words. It fits the main protagonist and gives a reader insight into his world. There is even some self-depreciating humor that was delivered in such a dry manner, it cracked me up. Jake is cool.

The Little Death is full of swagger, action and attitude. It’s populated with people who live on the dark side and the only person able to make them toe the line of justice is someone who can smack them back with that bit of darkness roiling inside himself. Jake has a love interest but until he loves himself I fear poor Kyle is in for a rough time of it. I’m hoping for Jake’s redemption, or at least a solid try at A.A. but the best I can hope for is for Jake to stumble into another mystery. Why? So I can get another chance to see where Ms. Speed is going to take his romance with Kyle and what can of worms Jake is going to open next because something tells me that’s one jackpot he’s more than likely to win.

As dreams come alive, trouble lurks around the corner.

When Neela Raymond and three of her college girlfriends take a camping trip over spring break, they’re abducted by a group of men and held captive for a week. At least that’s what Neela’s been told—she can’t remember any details of the horrifying event. But one thing is very apparent—during that week she became pregnant. Afraid of the possibilities, Neela finds it difficult to attend classes, eat, or sleep.

When Neela finally falls asleep, she wakes in a dream world, where she finds Gabe O’Shay. Though she can’t remember him either, something in her recognizes him.

Gabe and Neela are best friends of a different sort. Created in Neela’s mind when she was just a child, Gabe has always been her dream friend, growing as she did, to eventually become the man of her dreams.

With Gabe’s help, Neela’s memory begins to return, and ugly truths emerge. Snagged in a violent, illegal scheme, Neela will have to struggle for survival. The nightmare is not over yet.

Meanwhile, Gabe has managed to find a tear between the dream world and the real world, but will he arrive too late to help his Neela?

This story didn’t just keep me on the edge of my seat, it left me with two chewed nails. I only do that when the suspense is so high, I can’t sit still and I’m torn between walking with the heroine as she experiences the drama or jump to the safety of the ending. I was incredibly tempted to cheat but I’m glad I didn’t. I would have missed all the action.

Barely Dreaming is a fascinating and unique set up because it takes my least favorite storytelling device, the dream sequence, and turns it on its ear. In this book, the dreaming creates the hero and he comes to life for real. There are so many pitfalls to this idea, the main one being, if he’s a dream hero then he’s going to be perfect and can do no wrong. In essence, be really boring. Ms. Beck’s avoidance of that is canyon wide. Gabe is truly a delight and he is autonomous. He thinks for himself, does for himself and isn’t a puppet of the heroine at all. Loving someone doesn’t mean you’re a door mat and Gabe is as far from that as a person can get. Proof of that comes later in the book when a reader discovers what else the hero has been doing when he’s offstage.

The best thing about the hero is his respect of Neela, the heroine. He teaches her so much through their shared times in her dreams and it comes in handy. In fact, Gabe teaches the heroine about her strengths and not only encourages it, but is able to nurture and guide her on a great many defensive tactics. Of course it begs the question of how and when could he have possibly learned all that he did to even teach her if all he knows or should know, comes from Neela’s mind? That’s one murky area that never gets explained and I’m not too sure it can be. This is, after all, fiction and a fantasy so in that respect, anything and everything is possible. And, since this is a really cool story, I accepted what the author presented at face value.

Neela is a victim, a hero and a woman of great belief. She’s a victim due to something really nasty happening to her. She’s a hero because she stood up to fight against evil criminals and didn’t let them ruin the good things in her life. And it’s because of her solid and stalwart belief that not only is Gabe real but so is his love for her. The natural treatment of premature ejaculation is levitra 60 mg climaxing remarkably quickly either before or shortly after penetration. As one of the most common sexual problems among men, impotence causes low self esteem, depression and stress and hence leading to increase buy cheap viagra find out here in ED time and again. tadalafil on line Benefits of Acai berry powder is also put in capsules as an enhancer. Choose the products you promote to your list carefully, and online levitra try to balance each promotional message you send with quality content. It’s the ultimate example of the true power of love – it crosses boundaries and makes the impossible, possible.

The way Ms. Beck chose to have Neela remember her trauma was distinctive as I don’t believe it’s ever been done before – a dream using a dream to cure amnesia. How cool is that? How’d she even come up with that idea? In any event, I found it clever, entertaining and refreshing. Of course there was nothing refreshing about what she remembered once she did. It was a nightmare, but I enjoyed how the author had Neela react and the choices she had her make. Nothing stupid about her and when push came to shove, the heroine was ready to stand up and fight. I loved it when she surprised her step-mother and got a kick out of it when Neela’s step-mom surprised her right back.

Speaking of Neela’s family, that dynamic was woven beautifully throughout the story. I loved the author’s descriptions of her dad and baby brothers. That whole family picture was wonderfully wholesome and healthy, filled with love and baked goods. It gave the book a wonderful depth of character and it was easy to see why she fought so hard to protect them. It provided a layer of substance to the plot and added to the viability of the conflict.

And what a conflict it was. It’s dastardly, sick and twisted and provided intense drama. When it was gradually revealed what those creeps were up to, it made me feel very uncomfortable. Like I said in the beginning of the review, I didn’t want to read in a continuous manner because I was getting so jumpy. That means the writing was effective – it got me to react, and it made my skin crawl. Kudos to the the author for writing so well so that the identity of the villain stayed hidden until she wanted me to know.

The most delightful aspect of the book comes from the times when Gabe and Neela are together in the lulls between the action. Their loving is beautiful, sweet yet passionate, and well written. I’m glad Ms. Beck took turns in each of the protagonist’s point of view because it made their declarations of love all the more special and meaningful.

Barely Dreaming is an intense story of love, action and mystery that really makes an impact. Neela and Gabe are a wonderful couple and I had the best time reading about their together times. There is a solid emotional connection between the two that jumps off of the pages. It gives readers that something extra special that makes a lasting impression long after you’ve read the happily ever after. Ms. Beck is a new-to-me author and I’m quite impressed with her writing style. I’m very happy I read this book and hope other readers will be just as pleased when they pick up their own copy of Barely Dreaming. It’ll be worth it.

Having a chance to read an entire series in one sitting is something that I don’t get to do all that often, but these characters were ones that I wanted to get to know better and when that opportunity presented itself I couldn’t turn it down. I was hooked from the moment I started book one (Convincing Quinn) and had to know what happened in book two. I was completely invested in the characters and book two did not disappoint. It only made me love this author more.

Some series the stories seem to be disconnected or so connected you can’t read just one, but Chloe Cole made this so that you could read it alone as a standalone book or as part of the series and still get the same great story.

I can’t wait to see what’s next from this author. I’m a fan.

Dusty doesn’t fear the feisty bull…but his owner’s another story.

Dusty O’Donovan, an accomplished bull rider, isn’t afraid to ride El Diablo, a feisty stud whose owner, Zach McCray, is offering $500,000 to anyone who can stay on him for a full eight seconds. Though Zach refuses to let a woman ride his bull, he’s intrigued by the headstrong Dusty, who he last saw when he was thirteen and she was six. Sparks fly when they’re together, but will Dusty’s secrets tear them apart?

Being a part of a rodeo is something to definitely keep your blood pumping, but when you’re a girl in a man’s world having to fight for every chance you get you learn to pick and choose your battles wisely. For Dusty O’Donovan, she has been fighting for everything in the last five years: for the chance to prove herself, for one more day of living, for everything. Will running into friends from her past bring the joy that she needs to brighter her days or will it lead to more heartache that she can’t handle?

For Zach McCray being a cowboy is a way of life for him. Though he did go away to Harvard for schooling the idea of owning a ranch has been in his blood for as long as he can remember. Until the day he ran into Dusty at the rodeo, he figured his life was about as full as it could get, but she turned his life upside down from the first smile. Could making Dusty see his love be the best thing for the two of them or will her secrets and evasions make this relationship something that could never work?

While this story did start off a bit slow I was surprised at how simple it was to get into. The characters were easy to relate to, and although at time the country slang of “darlin’” that Zach seemed so fond of did get a bit old, it is something you hear in the south.

I did like that Helen Hardt made the characters so easy to fall for, and not completely perfect; she made them human and it made the story that much more enjoyable in the end. Having never read any of her works before, I was pleasantly surprised by this story and find that I will be looking for more stories by her in the future.

In a realm of dangerously delicious decadence, three lost souls dare to love…

Midnight Playground, Book 4

Ever, owner of London’s infamous Midnight Playground, fears the pain of his past and the weight of centuries are pushing him to the edge of insanity. Not even his favorite indulgences—sex, blood, companionship—hold his interest. And he wonders, what’s the point of immortality when life is unbearably empty?

Into the void stumbles trouble.

Kidnapped, Turned against her will then abandoned by a rogue vampire, Mercy Turned the handsome Deo in a fit of loneliness and despair. Now they stand, frightened and confused, before the Council to be punished for their unintentional crimes. Their fresh innocence, the intensity of their illegal bond, rekindles Ever’s sexual and emotional fire.

The trio forges a connection that’s more than simply a cure for Ever’s lassitude. Its brilliance drives the shadows from his soul…until Mercy is threatened, and he must draw on his darkness to fight for her life. And risk losing his happily forever after to madness.

Another vampire book you say? I’ve been reluctant to read another one but am very glad I chose Eversong because it’s part vampire/paranormal, part mystery/thriller. I haven’t read any of the other books in the Midnight Playground series, but this one has piqued my interest.

Deo and Mercy seem ideally matched when Ever enters into the picture and things really heat up.

The first part of the book is hot and steamy and there are plenty of sex scenes, but then the book takes on its thriller, mystery element. By then you’ve got a vested interest in these characters. Lives are in danger and the vampire responsible for turning Mercy comes on the scene and nothing is the same.

The pacing is snappy — you’ll be able to read this in one sitting — and the dialogue is natural sounding.

Freshman year is going well for Cassie, a standout sprinter who is about to move up to varsity; school has been fine, her best friend Tara is also running track, and Tommy, that cute sax player she likes has asked her to come see his band rehearse. But in a matter of weeks, Cassie has a secret she is trying to hide from everyone. Her hair has started falling out, and she s doing everything possible to keep it from showing. When her parents tell her it happened to her once before, at age 3, she s horrified, and a trip to the dermatologist confirms what she has been afraid of: that all of her hair may fall out. She has alopecia, and there s no known effective treatment. Cassie eventually gets a wig when she can no longer disguise the truth, and she finally confides in Tommy about it. With her worst fears realized, will Cassie ever be able to face her classmates, her teammates, and most of all, Tommy?

Cassie’s story is one that is truly inspiring for all ages. At the age where she is just starting to discover boys and have a sense of independence, Cassie must also deal with her hair falling out sporadically. With such a delicate subject, I knew from the first page this story would be riveting. At times, I was so sad thinking about everything this young girl had to go through.

There were times it was difficult to keep reading because of how upset I was for her. That effect actually speaks volumes about the effectiveness of the subject matter and the author’s ability to make me feel for the main character in the story.

Not only was the subject matter riveting, the charaters were as well. For example, at moments I felt like I could sympathize with Cassie’s mother and other times I wondered how a mother can treat her daughter the way she treated Cassie. Another character I enjoyed was Cassie’s best friend Tara. The way she supported Cassie throughout the whole ordeal displayed a true friendship that can never be replaced. These characters really added a certain amount of depth to the story, which help with the flow and made it much easier to read.

One of the most amazing things about A Closer Look is that I highly recommended it to people around me even before I finished the last page. This will be a great story for mothers to read with their daughters, or for anyone to enjoy on their own. Ms. DelleCava’s book should make it to Oprah’s reading list because after I was done reading it, I was convinced that it has the ability to change lives.

For almost a century, Imperial Russia has captivated the imagination— the ruthless execution of the royal family, the disputed survival of the heir: it’s a cinematic chaos that the masterful Dora Levy Mossanen unravels for her readers. Taking readers deep into tarnished grandeur, The Last Romanov follows Darya, a wise old beauty whose time spent with the Imperial family has haunted her entire life. When the murderous events unfold, Darya is plagued by the prophecy made by the Empress’s advisor, Rasputin. She must find the missing Tsarevich Alexis Romanov and restore the monarchy or risk losing her own life.

What could happen in today’s Russia if there had been a surviving member of the Romanov family? This is the question that Dora Levy Mossanen asks in The Last Romanov. She takes you through the last years of the Imperial Couple’s rule, up to the moment of their execution… and possible survival of the teenaged Tsarevich, Alexis Romanov. Prepare yourself for one wild ride through history as Darya tells her tale and makes her search for the missing Tsarevich!

Darya believes it’s her divine destiny to guard and protect the young Tsarevich Alexis Romanov from everything that might possibly oppose his eventual ascension to the Imperial throne of Russia. She’s so focused on her duty to the royal family that she often sacrifices things important to her for their benefit. While this is an honorable and often required trait in a member of the royal household, it also shows a single-mindedness that might not always make for a good companion, either. She lets her care of, and eventual search for, Alexis Romanov consume the remainder of her life. Some of the brands in our network are seeing viagra prices 25-30 percent redemption rates. Darya’s one distraction from the young Tsarevich and the Imperial Family is her one true love, Avram. Their romance is fiery and passionate, made even more so by the fact that he is a forbidden Jew. For someone of her standing to be involved with a commoner was unheard of at that time, but for this commoner to also be a Jew? It was pure scandal. Darya and Avram do not let this come between them, however, showing both grace and the strength of true love to overcome all obstacles. The way the keep finding one another, despite the odds and political crisis of the time, is both magical and hope for us all.

However, despite Darya’s complete obsession with the young Tsarevich and what became of him, her story is one of the most interesting I’ve read in a long time. This era of history, and the Romanov family itself, has long been a curiosity of mine. To find such an imaginative and intriguing story set during this time and involving this family was a happy surprise for me. Filled with both wild and the more sedate historical characters plus just a touch of the mystical, The Last Romanov brings magic and history together in a spectacular way.

The Last Romanov is a wonderfully well-written read for any lover of history or even just someone who believes in the impossible.

When is a woman no longer a Mouse? When she’s taught to be the natural confident submissive that has been simmering in wait for the perfect Dom.

I think I’ve said this about every Texas Siren book but this truly may be my favorite…so far! Bethany “Mouse” Hobbes is such a loveable and honest character she won me over immediately. She has always been the soft spoken, often overlooked, comfortable fixture in the town of Deer Run and rightfully earned the nickname “Mouse”. Having said that, when Ms. Oak first introduces us to Mouse she had just taken the first steps, on her own I might add, in securing a future for herself. In my mind, after reading the book, this was a very important piece of the story because it meant that she was ready for change when it presented itself. She simply needed the guiding and strong hand of a Dom to give her the confidence to pursue her dream.

Speaking of the Dom, Trev McNamara, broken ex-football star and recovering drug and alcohol addict, couldn’t have been more perfect for both Beth and Bo. In true Sophie Oak fashion, Trev’s story begins with a tie-in from one of Ms. Oak’s first books. Anyone who has read either the Texas Siren or Bliss stories is used to crossovers between these two fantastic series. Without giving too much away, I have to say I did not expect to see the familiar face that sets Trev on his path to true love and one incredible HEA. If you plan find out content viagra on line to order medication from Canada, you must have a prescription that your doctor has taken the decision to prescribe it after being sure that the benefits are more than the risks involved. Lastly, joint replacement surgery is costly, not to buy line viagra mention the potential income that you might suffer from not just specific kind of sexual issue. It could be due to alteration in the nervous, vascular or hormonal systems. * Prolonged usage of tobacco and/or smoking and generico levitra on line drinking can also become a reason for ED. Once there is proper reaching of signals to the brain that may or generic sildenafil from india may not be acted upon by the cranial brain. Trev isn’t looking for one sub, much less two, when arrives in Deer Run but he can’t deny the chemistry he immediately feels for Beth or his desire to take Bo in hand.

It’s not uncommon for a hero or heroine to have personal growth as a story progresses. Really, it’s pretty much expected when it’s romance. The challenge, in my opinion, is for the author to make that growth both believable as well as tangible to the reader. Ms. Oak certainly succeeded with Beth, Trev and Bo. Each character has emotional challenges and/or personal demons to fight. At the same time what they individually bring to the D/s relationship is vital and necessary for the success of all involved. One example of the well developed and gradual change is how Beth begins the story as Mouse but is anything but a mouse by the conclusion. And it only required the “threat” of a good figging, LOL.

One of the stories I’ve been anticipating, very impatiently I might add, is Leo Meyer’s tale. Ms. Oak knows how to keep her fangirls happy by nicely setting the stage for Leo, Shelley and Wolf to fight for their HEA somewhere in the near future. I CAN’T WAIT!!!

Even if you are new to the Texas Siren’s books you can enjoy Trev, Beth and Bo’s story. There are quite a few names and faces that pop into the story and it certainly makes more sense if you’ve read the other books but it isn’t at all necessary for enjoying Siren in Waiting. Ms Oak is an amazing story teller and will have you coming back again and again.

Etienne never thought getting his pocket picked could lead to a first date. He knows the second he catches punk boy Brady’s eye that the guy is pure trouble, but Et can’t resist his wicked sense of humor, pretty face, cold hands — and the “piss off” swagger when Brady’s on stage with his band doesn’t hurt, either.

From Rimbaud to Buzzcocks to Malbec to handcuffs, they introduce each other to their favorite pleasures, and the chemistry is unstoppable. But Brady disappears in the night, won’t give Etienne a phone number, doesn’t talk about his past; Etienne’s never known someone so hungry for affection but with so many trust issues. Et would give all he has, but he has the feeling Brady needs saving from something before he can take what Et offers.

Then, the “something” shows up: Brady’s dangerous family, all of them more than human — including Brady, who has the ability to supercool matter with the slightest touch. Throw in the family talent for criminal activity, and it’s an explosion waiting to happen.

Et wants to help him escape his past, but if Brady keeps disappearing, he may not get the chance.

Etienne may be shy and quiet but he’s got just the right amount of heat to thaw bad boy Brady. Punk Rocker Brady has a secret – he can control elements to chill the air into ice. He also has a shady family that keeps trying to get him to do illegal jobs. Bookseller Et doesn’t know any of this but he does know his chemistry with Brady is off the charts. Despite the hard-core exterior Et sees something vulnerable and worthwhile in Brady if only their pasts don’t screw it up.

Riot Boy is a fast paced, fun filled ride filled with sex and a bit of the paranormal. Brady is a perfect goth punk boy with his attitude, shady past, and great punk references. Et is a perfect foil as a more staid and down to earth bookseller with a broken heart. Together they play off each other well and create some dynamic tension. Their chemistry is what really drives the story and there is a lot of sex in this novella. Almost too much as most of the action and character development happens during sex. Road towards recovery One of the greatest challenges related with the Penguin Update is teaching people how they can lowest prices viagra recover. ED can be very embarrassing and can really bring down your self esteem, especially if you’re in the early stages of your hair thinning. prices in uk viagra There are certain side discount generic cialis effects of this drug too. There is no man-made drug, viagra no prescription appalachianmagazine.com no shot and none of you are satisfied it creates differences between both the partners. This isn’t bad as the writing and sex scenes are entertaining and smoking hot, but it does leave any significant plot development to happen off page. The reader is simply told about it later.

This is perhaps where the story has a few weaknesses. Although it’s great fun to read and the characters are delightful, the actual plot and world building is pretty sparse. The paranormal element, in which Brady can control and manipulate the air to turn it colder, is almost non-existent. The story doesn’t try to explain or really delve into this aspect at all and if anything, it comes across as distracting and unnecessary. Likewise all important plot developments happen off page. Most of the story builds up to Brady’s showdown with his family but all the story does is recap what happened while Et (and presumably the reader) were asleep. It’s unfortunate since the writing has a real knack to it that such important plot detail is omitted.

Despite this issue I’d still recommend Riot Boy. It’s very enjoyable to read and filled with sex so anyone wanting something very erotic will be satisfied. It has a fun flair that lets you sink into the story and enjoy regardless of any other problems. While it’s not perfect, this is still an entertaining and worthwhile read.
