Just before 9 a.m. on September 11, 2001, I got a phone call from my friend Lilly, a photojournalist working for the Miami Herald. She told me there was a small plane crash at the World Trade Center, near my place, and wondered if I could go downtown to shoot some photos. We both interned for the Herald years ago, and if nothing else, she figured, I could get published in the paper.

I quickly got up, grabbed my gear, film and batteries, and ran out the door.

I lived on 23rd Street in New York City, near a subway stop. Leaving my apartment, I walked into a splendid September day: low humidity, abundant sunshine. It was a Tuesday, primary day for the upcoming municipal elections, which would decide the successor of Rudy Giuliani. Later that day, the polls would close early and end up being postponed for two weeks.

I jumped on the downtown 6 Train, anxiously wondering what was happening. All the other riders were already talking about “the accident” in ominous voices and hushed tones, an air of mystery wafting throughout the crammed train.

I made it to Canal Street before the entire train line stopped. The conductor’s voice crackled over the intercom, informing us that trains were no longer traveling southbound. Our journey was over. We needed to get off.

By the time I peeked above ground, having climbed what seemed like endless stairs ascending into the streets of lower Manhattan, I already knew this was no accident.

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Roni Loren who is celebrating the recent release of Yes and I Love You. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win a copy of the book.

A beautifully emotional and unforgettably steamy new contemporary romance from New York Times and USA Today bestseller Roni Loren

Everyone knows Miz Poppy, the vibrant reviewer whose commentary brightens the New Orleans nightlife. But no one knows Hollyn Tate, the real face behind the media star…or the anxiety that keeps her isolated. All her life, Hollyn’s tried to hide her true self behind an online façade, but when her boss tells her she needs to reveal the truth to the world or lose her job, she’s forced to rely on an unexpected source to help face her fears.

Enter Jasper Deares: actor, newly minted fake boyfriend, and way, way out of her league. Hollyn thinks Jasper must be joking when he offers private lessons to help overcome her fears. Getting up on a stage? Hello, worst nightmare. But Jasper’s infectious charm has her saying yes despite herself. They’re only supposed to be playing a few improv games, but as the lessons run longer and the lines grow blurrier, Hollyn can’t help but wonder if she’s acting at all…or if a relationship with Jasper might help give her the confidence she needs to say yes to every imperfect part of herself.

Jasper remained hunched in the passenger seat, half-turned to the side, as Hollyn pulled onto the road and made her way to I-10. She was sweating now, too, and her fingers were tapping a four count on the steering wheel. She was probably supposed to talk to distract him. That was what people did in these situations, right? She’d seen those kinds of scenes in movies.

“This won’t take long,” she said, not looking his way. “Fifteen minutes tops. Maybe you just have food poisoning or something.”

“Right.”

“Or maybe your organs are going to explode.”

He made a choked sound, but then she realized he was laughing—or at least attempting to in between whatever pain he was dealing with. “Gee, doc, you really know how to delicately lay out my condition.”

“My sympathy meter for you is low right now.”

He lifted his glasses and rubbed his eyes. “I know. I’m really sorry. Like really, epically sorry.”

“Whatever.”

A few seconds of silence passed and he looked over at her. “Can you keep talking? Even if it’s just to tell me what an ass I am. Anything to distract me from this stabbing pain.”

Keep talking. The plea made her throat want to close up, Jasper’s attention on her too intense. She could feel her tics ramping up. “I don’t know what else to say. Ask me something.”

“Favorite color.”

She wet her lips. “Blue.”

“What’s your last name?”

“Tate. Yours?”

“Deares.”

She turned to look at him. “Dearest? Like your mom is Mommy Dearest?”

He sniffed derisively. “It’s Deares without the T. And that’s an old joke, Hollyn Tate.”

“Not to me.” She felt the corners of her mouth hitch up a little. “Jasper Dearest. I sound like your 1950s wife calling you to come to the dinner table and eat your pot roast.”

Oh God, did I say that out loud? I just called myself his wife.

He snorted. “Too bad your name isn’t Hollyn Darling. We could get our own retro TV show.”

The tight feeling in her chest eased a little. “I’d have to learn to make pot roast.”

“Not a food blogger then, huh?” He leaned back against the headrest and closed his eyes. “What do you do? My money’s on CIA operative.”

She focused on his profile for a moment, which was oddly compelling, the slight bump in his nose somehow making him that much more interesting to look at—imperfectly handsome. She turned her attention back to the road. She didn’t need to be thinking about his nose or how handsome he was. Asshole, remember? “I do a lot of freelance writing, but not about food. Mostly about movies and entertainment.”

“I love movies. You like your job?”

“Mostly, but it’s a lot of scrambling. I’m hoping to find a full-time position one of these days. You know the magical kind that comes with insurance and a steady paycheck?”

“Jobs like that exist?” He shifted in his seat and let out a soft grunt of pain.

“I’ve heard rumors.”

“Fascinating.” He reached out and angled the air-conditioning vent toward him.

She took a breath, trying to settle into the rhythm of the conversation. “So you do coffee and improv.”

“Yeah. And I’m going to teach some classes at WorkAround.”

“On how to trash your coworkers?”

Jasper’s head turned her way again. “Ouch.”

She didn’t look over at him. No way was she apologizing. She needed to remember she was mad, that he’d been a jerk. Not get distracted by his hotness or his struggling-actor state.

“Look, Hollyn,” he said, his voice quiet. “I’m truly sorry. What you saw tonight…that isn’t the spirit of our show.” He paused and took a ragged breath, like the speech was a lot of work. “I made a mistake. The serial-killer thing naturally brought my mind to Andi, and I bet if you asked her, she wouldn’t have taken what I said seriously. When I talked to her, she made fun of her own obsession. She embraces her weirdness.”

“Right,” Hollyn said, jaw tightening. “So I should just be cool with being made fun of. I’m the one who’s too sensitive. Got it.”

“God, no,” he said with frustration. “I’m saying I was a dick to use you in the monologue, and I’m sorry. I didn’t know about your tics. I just thought you were annoyed with me.”

Her grip tightened on the steering wheel as she took the exit for Canal Street, and she inhaled a deep breath. “I’ve grown out of the worst of them but they flare up when I’m…nervous.”

She could feel him watching her, and her fingers tapped more quickly.

“So I made you nervous?” he asked.

“Yes.”

He frowned in her periphery. “Why?”

She rubbed her lips together, not liking this line of questioning at all. Because you were funny and boy beautiful and have the sexiest smirk. “I’m not great with new people.”

He shifted in the seat again. “Good thing I’m not new anymore. You can relax now.”

She glanced over. The guy looked like hell. Flushed and sweating. But his eyes had a little spark of invitation in them.

“You’re still exceptionally new,” she said. “Cellophane wrapped with the price tag still on.”

“Nope. The seal’s been broken. We’ve texted. You helped me limp off a city street. Hey, we’ve even had our first fight and planned our TV show, Hollyn Darling. I’m no longer new to you.” He winced and gripped his side. “We’re old friends now.”

She stared at him for a moment, part of her wishing it could be true. But who was she kidding? One, how could she trust that any interaction they had wasn’t going to turn into material? And two, she’d been fooling herself when she’d thought they’d been flirting. Jasper was a comedian. Funny quips were his business. Charm was his currency. She’d read the whole situation wrong. “We’re not friends, Jasper.”

Snowball’s Christmas by Kristen McKanagh

Snowball—an aptly named bundle of feline fluff—is thankful to be spending her first Christmas in the comfort of Weber Haus, the Victorian B&B run by Miss Tilly. Emily Diemer, who cooks for the guests, dotes on Snowball, but she’s not thrilled about another new arrival at the B&B: Miss Tilly’s nephew, Lukas. Which is odd, because Snowball’s animal instincts tell her that Lukas and Emily should definitely be friends.

Everything Emily needs is in this quaint community—including, she hopes, the chance to open her own bakery one day. She doesn’t think much of Lukas for leaving his aging aunt to struggle while he jets around the world taking photographs. But now that he’s here, helping to spruce up the property and getting mixed up in Snowball’s antics, she begins to soften a little. Until she learns what he has planned . . .

Lukas is going to sell Weber Haus so that Miss Tilly can retire. But Snowball is certain that this B&B, and these people, are supposed to be her forever home. Somehow she has to get these stubborn humans to see things through the wisdom of a cat’s eye and a kitten’s loyal, loving heart . . .

I’ll start right out with this book seems like it’s tailor-made for being made into a TV movie. It’s got an adorable kitten, an auntie that needs help, plus two people who need each other even if they don’t realize it. It’s truly cute. The writing flows well and I was drawn right into the story. I wanted to root for the characters and loved little Snowball. Lukas is dreamy and he could come to my house to do some home improvement if he’s available.

The one quibble I had with this book was Emily. I like forthright characters. I like the ones who know what they want and won’t quit until they get it. I like characters with ridiculously tremendous drive. Emily is all these things and more, but the one thing she is that drove me bonkers has to be her drive to the point of being off-putting. Some readers might just see her as strong, but it’s almost like she’s got a savior complex. If she’s not saving it, then it won’t be saved. That’s nice, but it got to be too much at times. I wanted to see her warm to Lukas and understand he had a stake in the property, too, but maybe a little faster. While this wasn’t my favorite part of the story, it might be perfectly fine for other readers and that’s great.

Lukas is a flawed character. He’s got his plate full and has a life he wants to live, but I liked that he quickly adapts to what’s thrown his way. He’s handsome and willing to help, even if he’s too busy trying not to get in Emily’s way.

The whole thing truly seems like it was written to be made into a TV movie. The writing was such that I could see the little B&B house, that I could see the characters and feel like I was there. I could almost smell the baked goods Emily made. The Christmas feel is all around in this story, too.

If you want a book that’s cute and sweet, then this might be the holiday read you’re looking for. Try it!

He’ll stop at nothing to protect her…even if it means hunting a killer.

Werewolf Braxton Devereaux is on the run. Accused of a murder he didn’t commit, he is forced to flee Pack Law, and the death sentence waiting for him. On the run from deadly assassins, he is nearly out of their reach when an assassin’s bullet hits its mark. Wounded, in pain, his wolf seeks shelter in the form of an unsuspecting and very beautiful woman.

Kate Wolph is busy trying to keep her Bed and Breakfast from going into foreclosure. The last thing she needs is an injured wild animal to care for. When that bleeding wolf transforms into a gorgeous man with blank eyes and a deadly smile, she should be terrified, not intrigued. Thrust suddenly into the supernatural world that surrounds him, Kate doesn’t know what to believe or who to trust. But the heat in Braxton’s kiss makes thinking all too difficult. And turning him away? Impossible.

Braxton has a reason to stay and fight, to uncover the truth. Kate is his reason now, and he’ll stop at nothing to protect her…even if it means hunting a killer.

I liked this novel even more than the other book I reviewed, Her Werewolf Bodyguard. Why? Because Her Werewolf Protector made me belly laugh, and had me sliding to the side of my chair because I was laughing so hard. Why? Because Ms. Vaughn introduced some authors on a writer’s retreat and the liquor flowed. What happens when these authors get tipsy? When they are introduced to Granny’s home party wares? Hilarity. What started off serious quickly morphed into one of the funniest scenes I’ve read in a while. For that reason alone, it shot the rating to a solid 5. Whenever I have a sad day, all I’ll have to do is read that chapter and I’ll get the giggles. Well done, Ms. Vaughn.
It has a psychological impact on most buy cialis soft of men who are over 60 still have sexual life. Now, this novel is not a romcom, it’s more romantic suspense but the comedic elements were well placed, well done and provided some much-needed levity during scenes that could have easily been written as serious and dark. I’m so happy the author wrote this book as she did. It was a wonderful balance.

Braxton is the hero whose suffering was propagated by the werewolf culture and the job he has as a Guardian. The poison he was exposed to did something to his physiology that was unheard of, which is a perfect reason for the hero to not act in his normal manner. And, it’s why I felt the plot worked. Drugs can affect a person in so many ways, especially with some of the worst side effects sounding like they came from a horror story starring a mad scientist with evil intentions.

Kate’s situation is sad. Her conflict is a trope that has been done before in movies and books; the unscrupulous builder with an eye on a family-owned business being in the way of the perfect development and who will do anything to get his way. He’s slimy to be sure, but he’s not the main antagonist; there are others but they have their sights on Braxton. Combine Kate’s dilemma and Braxton’s dangerous situation and a reader is in for an amazing time.

There’s a sad element in the story, that being Braxton’s mom and her inability to love him as she should. I believe the reason is valid because she is the victim of an abusive husband. She’s a broken woman who has been conditioned by her abuser. It doesn’t resolve in a Pollyanna moment – it’s more realistic and therefore adds to the gravity and depth of the book.

The romance that blossoms between Braxton and Kate was fun to watch grow. Pay attention to the small details about Kate and a reader will know why their relationship worked and why Barrett, Braxton’s boss, didn’t stop it either. The bedroom door is wide open but those scenes didn’t confine themselves to the bedroom. They’re not overly graphic so I enjoyed that aspect of their relationship.

I don’t want to write an overly long review, although there is a lot left unsaid because the author packed this full-length novel with a lot of detail, dialogue, adventure, suspense, twists and surprises. One of those surprises was particularly unpleasant, for me because of the descriptions used by the author, and for one of the main characters because of who it was. I couldn’t put this book down because there was always the question, what next? Ms. Vaughn delivered.

Her Werewolf Protector is a must read for fans of the Werewolf Guardian series. I think this book is the best one I’ve read so far. Most of them I’ve read out of order and I believe they can stand on their own two feet – well, four in this case. I do admit it was nice having read two back to back because the reading experience ended up being richer. No matter how they’re read, I think they provide wonderful romance and a satisfactory happy-ever-after. I’m a happy reader.

How fucking long can they keep me here?

Hannah Modell looked out of the window of her hotel suite to the esthetic view of…the parking lot. Beyond it, she could see other buildings in downtown Houston, accented by the sparkle of the evening lights just coming on. Traffic filled the streets as people came and went, punctuated by the impatient honking of horns. She’d be happy to be in that irritated crowd. She’d be happy to be anyplace except this hotel. Scratch that. Anyplace except for Houston.

How in hell had this happened? One minute, she’d been doing her dream job. The next, she’d been one step away from being arrested and tried for murder. Or whatever they decided to call it.

Fourteen days since it happened, and she was still shocked by the whole thing. She and the rest of her GO-Team had been in a remote location, delivering explosives via drone to take out a key terrorist figure. They’d been told the man was hiding out in a house on Chesapeake Bay. The word was that he’d planned a strike on a major United States city and their assignment was to take him out first.

Her GO-Team had been flown to an isolated location to launch the drone, which had been outfitted with special equipment because of the explosives and had a long-range capacity. This was a black ops assignment, so only the top brass at Lowden and Hannah and her team had the details. It was only the third time she’d been tasked with doing something this enormous and she’d spent hours checking and double checking everything to make sure nothing would go wrong. She knew she’d probably driven her team nuts, but she didn’t care. There was no room for error in a situation like this.

She’d been stunned when the helicopter carrying Greg Kingsley, Lowden’s executive vice president, had shown up at their site. He never came out to remotes. Jumping out of the chopper, he’d told them they had to shut down the job. Right. Now. Right that minute. Finish packing everything up so they could get the hell out of there.

For a moment, she’d just stood there, shocked.

“But—why?”

“There’s a situation, Hannah. Something went wrong big time with the drone delivery. A fuckup and we have a tragedy on our hands.”

“A tragedy?” She’d stared at him like he was speaking a foreign language.

“Worse than that. A disaster of epic proportions. No, bigger than epic.”

Fingers of panic had curled in her stomach. “Greg. Please, please tell me what happened. You know how carefully I check everything before we even leave the campus.”

“Okay, but right now we have to get everyone out of here while we sort this out. Especially you.”

“But—”

“No buts, Hannah.” His voice had had a hard edge to it. “Lowden needs to see you ASAP, since this is your baby. He’ll go over everything with you. I’m just the delivery guy.”

What the hell?

On the flight back, she’d pestered him for details, but he’d had little to say beyond what he’d already told her. He’d just kept repeating that she should wait until they were back at Lowden. She’d been baffled at how this had happened. Misdirect a drone to dump its payload in a different place? Me? Hell, no. She was committed to her job, her country, her patriotism. That was why working for a paramilitary company that—among other things—did black jobs for the government had been so satisfying. Because she got to serve her country in a way a lot of people never could. She didn’t even have friends outside of the job, and those she could only categorize as acquaintances. How disgusting was that?

The moment they’d landed at the complex, Kingsley had hustled her right to Eric Lowden’s office, where he’d told her she was off the job until the situation was resolved.

“Situation?” She’d repeated the word. This was a hell of a lot more than that.

“Your drone flew off course.” Lowden hadn’t minced any words with her. “I don’t know if the programming got screwed up or something else did. The fact remains that somehow, instead of taking out the terrorist, which was your assignment, that drone ended up at Senator Mark Hegman’s summer house and blew it all to shit. Including the senator. We’re just damn lucky his wife wasn’t there at the time.”

“What?” Her stomach had cramped and a chill had slithered down her spine. “I don’t understand. How did this happen?”

“That’s what we have to find out. Right now. There’s a shitstorm you wouldn’t believe.”

“But I double and triple checked all my settings,” she’d assured him, “and we tested it several times before leaving the campus. I always do. You know that.”

“Like I said, we’re being bombarded with questions,” he’d told her. “From all sides, including the fucking government that contracted this. We can’t let them near you until we have answers. I’m doing my best at the moment to avoid everyone, including the media, and juggle everything else. I managed to get the story out that the drone veered off course, which is how this terrible tragedy occurred.”

“But we have to figure out what really happened,” she’d kept insisting. “I want to know what happened. I should be involved.”

“We’ll do that, of course, Hannah,” he’d assured her, “but we have to keep you tucked away.”

“Do you think it was my fault?” she’d demanded. “Mr. Lowden, you know my work. It’s always impeccable.”

“Yes, but that doesn’t matter to the outside world. And for the sake of Lowden Tactical, I have to get answers without you in the middle of a media frenzy.”

At least they weren’t throwing her to the wolves. She supposed she should be grateful for that.

“We’ll probably have eighteen kinds of federal agencies crawling up our butts,” he’d continued. “It’s important for you not to be available to them while we manage this.”

“But—”

Lowden had shaken his head. “We can’t chance it that somehow they’ll trap you. It’s for your own good as well as ours. Better it be the story that the drone malfunctioned than that you made a mistake or someone sabotaged the flight. That works the best.”

The word sabotage had made her feel physically ill. Was it even possible?

I want to know what happened, too.” She could hear her voice in her head now, edged with desperation.

“I understand you, but listen to what I’m saying. I’m trying to keep everyone off your ass. That’s why you’re on leave for the moment. With you being the pilot and engineer, they’ll look to you first. And nothing you say will mean a thing to them. That drone killed the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, for Christ’s sake. We have to keep you out of sight.”

She remembered the feeling of nausea choking her as he’d continued talking to her in a low voice, but underneath his quiet tone was hard anger at what a disaster this was for Lowden Tactical. Of course. To him, that came first.

“Eric’s on top of it,” Greg had assured her. “He just told you that. But to make this work, we need to keep you away from the media. Nothing good can come of you being interviewed.”

She’d certainly agreed with that. And now, as she stood in her hotel room, his words kept replaying in her head.

‘Don’t worry, Hannah. We’re planning to keep you hidden away for your own good, until we get a public relations handle on this. And get some answers. We’ve got nice accommodations ready for you, Hannah. You’ll be very comfortable while we sort this out. We just need to keep you away from the media while we figure out how it went wrong. You understand. If you’re not guilty, you have nothing to worry about. Besides, you might not be safe at home.’

Not safe? Who would she be in danger from? Did they know? Or was the evidence not that conclusive? It was, after all, as Lowden had pointed out, her drone, her controls that had supposedly misdirected the drone to dump its payload on the vacationing chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Now, as she paced the living room of the suite, she went over it again and again in her mind, trying to make sense of it. The stated target was supposed to have been an ISIS leader. That was what they had been told. The government had received word that he was hiding out on the estate of a known sympathizer, plotting an attack of some kind on the United States. Lowden had been tasked with delivering the payload because the government was afraid of leaks in its own system.

Mistake! This has to be a mistake.

Except…she’d never made a mistake. Ever. The drones were her life. Was it something with the equipment? Something she’d somehow missed? Except that was verified and calibrated regularly. And all the questions. So many questions. And cooped up in this hotel, that was all she’d been able to think of.

They knew her. They had to know someone else had done this, had committed what could actually be classified as espionage. Espionage. Just the word made her sick to her stomach, as she had been almost every day she’d been tucked away in this upscale jail.

‘You’ll be safe. We have people guarding you.’

Guarding. Right. Private security sitting outside her door at all times. She snorted. Bodyguard, my ass. Despite what they said, they were more like jailers, and the comfortable suite, the cable television with streaming channel and anything she wanted from room service, didn’t make up for the fact that she knew she was a prisoner. The windows might have drapes on them instead of bars, but the result was the same.

She wondered what Lowden had even told the rest of its employees, and what they thought. Had he brought up the espionage possibility with them? She considered them her friends, sort of, but would they buy into it or swear she couldn’t have done it? It occurred to her that she didn’t have any kind of social life beyond Lowden, but until now that hadn’t bothered her…but it meant there was no one to deny the charges or defend her.

When they’d taken her to her apartment to pack up what she’d need for what they’d called ‘a possible extended stay’ elsewhere, she’d loaded everything she could. Of course, her unsmiling guards had checked everything including her undies before letting her fill her suitcases. What the hell did they think I was hiding in them? Secret plans? A payoff? If she’d taken one, for the love of god, she’d have it in a secret offshore bank account where no one could find it.

Wait…that—that wasn’t what they thought, was it? That someone had been paid to drop the load on a non-target and she was the most likely candidate? Supposedly she wasn’t under suspicion. If she hadn’t done this—big if—then she was possibly in danger from whoever the guilty person was. Or persons. Oh, yeah? She guessed that was why they were hesitant to dump her in a jail cell. If everything pointing to her didn’t stick, Lowden could be in for a huge lawsuit. Maybe the company would be shut down.

And no one seemed to want to give her any information. Three times a day, when one of the ‘guards’ wheeled in her food, she badgered them with questions, but they might as well have been mute for all the info she got from them. She asked to please meet with Greg Kingsley, and each time was told he was busy doing damage control. What about the damage to me?

With each passing day, she became more nervous. More desperate. More convinced she was being set up to take the blame for everything.

Her life, like the movement of the planets, had reached critical density. What had she read when studying the mathematics of space? If the expansion of your life has suddenly contracted and movement has halted or turned, you have reached your critical density. Yeah, that was her all right. Stuck in time with no answers and no way forward.

She turned from the window and paced the room, hands shoved into the pockets of her jeans. How in the everlovin’ hell did this even happen?

She had been so excited to get the job interview with Lowden Tactical and it had gone well. She knew she had an unusually high aptitude for spatial awareness and action that made her an expert in the field of drones. Eric Lowden had seemed impressed with her and soon, from the air-conditioned comfort of her control room, she’d been able to kick butt all over the world.

When Lowden had assigned her to one of their GO-Teams, she’d hardly been able to contain her excitement and pride. These were the highly trained covert teams that took drones into enemy territory to surveil or deliver payloads in places where the government politically could not. Positions on the teams were considered highly restricted. She’d made it through the rigorous training and managed to earn the respect of the others. She was one of only two women assigned to the teams and she wore the selection like a badge of honor. She would never do anything to bring shame on it. Ever.

Someone had done this and manipulated things to place the blame on her. Someone who was going to make a lot of money for getting the payload dumped on a different target. She was discovering in a most painful way there was a big difference between having brains and being smart.

One thing she did figure out was how precarious her situation really was. After all the hours she’d spent taking everything apart bit by bit, starting with when she’d been hired by Lowden, she’d come to some frightening conclusions. They’d wanted her brain and her skills, which were the best in the company. They had planned this well in advance. And they could not afford to let her talk to anyone. She had no idea why they hadn’t just gotten rid of her to begin with, but she figured they had some use for her. After that, she was now convinced not even her body would be found.

The story of Hegman’s death was front and center on the news every day. She’d watched for a while on television, but she reached a point where she couldn’t stand it anymore. Although her name had not been mentioned specifically, reporters continued to refer to “a member of the Lowden GO-Team responsible for the drone.”

She had to get out of here and try to figure things out, but how? She was never allowed out of the suite and both doors were guarded twenty-four-seven. All her food came from room service, the trays minutely examined before she was allowed to receive them, and even then, one of her keepers wheeled in the table. The waiters weren’t allowed to enter. When housekeeping came to clean the rooms, one of the men dogged her every footstep. She was surprised they didn’t follow her into the bathroom, for god’s sake.

She had her laptop, but she wasn’t allowed an internet connection. No cell phone, and the desk had been told not to accept any phone calls from this room. She was completely shut off from the outside world. And she had become so immersed in her job that the only people in her life were those on her GO-Team and others at Lowden. How sad is that? And frightening. No one would be banging on doors asking where she was and what was going on.

She stopped pacing for a moment to look out of the window again. It was darker now, the outside lights brighter, more people moving in the area filled with hotels and restaurants and shops. She might try to climb out of a window, except the windows were sealed and she was on the fifteenth floor. But there had to be a way out of here. No one was going to try to prove her innocence except her. Can I just catch a break here, please?

A knock sounded on the door, breaking into her train of thought, not that it was much of a train.

“It’s Santos. Your dinner is here.”

She opened the door, something that was just a formality. She was told—ordered—not to put the chain on the door in case she had a problem and they needed immediate access. It was for her safety.

Right. She’d almost snorted when they told her that. It wasn’t her safety they were worried about. They just wanted to make sure she couldn’t disappear on them.

She opened the door and found Paul Santos standing there with the room service table bearing her meal.

“If you wouldn’t mind stepping back from the door,” he told her in the even, measured voice she’d gotten used to, “I’ll just wheel this into the room.”

Step back. In other words, don’t try to make a run for it. Everything they did made her feel more and more like a criminal and gave the situation an increasingly hopeless slant. She had to figure this out. She couldn’t just wait here in this hotel while incorrect evidence was gathered about her to frame her and the person who was really behind this got away with it.

London, 1819

Madoc crumpled the paper and scowled fiercely at the roaring fire. He scanned the library of Brooks’s, then squinted at the shadowed corners of the room, glad no one else witnessed his irritation. He and a close confidante were enjoying a leisurely evening in a private London gentlemen’s club. They’d traded a profitable evening of gaming for a quiet place to talk and enjoy a decanter of brandy, when he’d remembered the envelope tucked inside his coat pocket.

“Bad news, Doc?” asked Kit, his dark eyes teasing. “It’s rare to see such a storm darken your face. I’m accustomed to the jovial yet bland expression you’ve perfected.”

He snorted with good humor at the Earl of Sunderland’s observation. “Ha! My invisible armor protects me well. News from home is rarely good these days.”

“Health or financial ailment?”

Madoc tossed the paper into the flames. “The solicitor informed me that he’s still waiting for my annual income. He sent word to my father, who replied it would arrive forthwith. I suppose I don’t need that stallion at Tattersall’s.”

“I could loan you the sum,” offered Sunderland with a grin, his midnight hair gleaming in the flickering light, “but you won more brass than I did at the tables.”

With a sigh, Madoc swirled the amber liquid in his crystal glass. “I’ve got blunt enough from my, er, other services. I couldn’t care less about the money. The sum has shrunk each year I’ve been gone.”

“Do you think there’s trouble with the estate? How is the cantankerous old Welshman?”

“Mama’s last letter described Father’s health as declining. He’s rarely left the grounds since his fall, and now he won’t leave the castle.”

Madoc remembered the accident like it was yesterday. Foxhunting had been his father’s favorite pastime—until he took a steep hedge that broke his back. The Earl of Brecken hadn’t walked in ten years. “He’s so blasted proud, didn’t want anyone to see him as less than a man, as he put it.”

“How old is he now?” Sunderland asked. “Must be nigh on sixty, eh?”

“Sixty-three last month.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I believe a journey home is in order. Something’s amiss.”

Lizzie is working hard on making her dream come true: her patisserie becoming a complete success. Dealing with meddling sisters, excessive parents and an unreliable friend and employee, she is not ready at all to meet Alex.

Alexander has spent years working tirelessly to keep alive his mother’s legacy and has never even thought of settling down. This all changes when he sees Lizzie.

On the deciding last day of the year, it only takes a glance for Alex to know she’s his and only a few words and a dance for Lizzie to feel in her heart that he is the one. When she runs off after a scorching New Year’s kiss, he doesn’t give up that easily and is willing to do anything to get her back in his arms.

This story is pure escapism and every woman’s fantasy. It’s a complete “McDreamy” and “McSteamy” all in one. The author’s biography states that “she likes to write feel-good, amusing romances that, after many surprising twists, always end in a Happily Ever After”. I say that Lexi February accomplished all that and more. Okay, yes it’s probably a tad unrealistic, but I’m a romantic at heart and full of optimism. I choose to believe that I could meet someone like Alex.

Ah, Alex. He is the man of my dreams. He’s better than the bath slogan “Calgon take me away”. I’d go where ever Alex wanted to take me. Alex is rich, handsome and knows what he wants and will do anything to get what he wants. He just happens to want Lizzie.

As for Lizzie, she’s a hot mess totally in need of meeting a man like Alex. I was cheering them on as I turned the pages as fast as I could. I remember thinking “Oh my goodness” while my toes curled, and with a goofy smile on my face. They had great chemistry.

There was a character that the synopsis mentions as an “unreliable friend and employee.” This character could have been more developed. It was a plot thread that had options that were missed. There were a few editing hiccups such as misspelled words, but I can read backwards and upside down if I have to so that didn’t bother me. Alex almost made me forget my name so I’m surprised I even noticed something such as spelling errors.

Honestly, this was an enjoyable romance story. Sincerely, I would read another romance by Lexi February. I prefer to read books that give me that feel-good feeling and she hit all my happy spots, especially with the epilogue. Well done. It’ll be easy to suggest this book to my friends who are looking for a lighthearted, take-me-away-from-this-world, story.

In Pack Rules, by Julia Talbot and BA Tortuga, security experts Mik and Van have to learn to work together, even though they have a past, and one that didn’t end well. He thinks IT guy Al is just the man to fulfill them, but will that leave Cereus, and Al, in the lurch? Find out in this second installment of the Cereus series. The Cereus series started off with book one, Cereus: Building.

With the classy resort Cereus finally built, it’s time for the Grand Opening. Once again three stories have been compiled by these authors showcasing all manner of various paranormal creatures and the sparks that can be created between them, because events like this never run completely smoothly.

Pack Rules by Julia Talbot and BA Tortuga

Werewolf Van and Vampire Mik have a past – and a complicated one at that. Despite that they both realise they need to relearn how to work together or lose possibly everything. Can they repair what was broken between them?

I enjoyed this steamy and fast-paced short story. While Mik and Van have quite a history the chemistry and desire is still really strong between them. I was pleased the reason for their breaking up was believable – this wasn’t just some miscommunication or silly misunderstanding – but a genuine problem the two had to discuss and work through. While the sex and reconnecting between Mik and Van takes up a large portion of the story between them I felt there was enough time also devoted to them working through their issues and rebuilding the trust and foundation of their relationship.

Downward Dog by BA Tortuga and Julia Talbot

Rian is a yoga instructor and a city wolf through and through. He’s eager to give the remote resort and all the freedoms entailed there a good try, but what will happen when a far more wild and instinctive local sets him in their sight?

I really enjoyed this story between Rian and Gilead. Rian was just an adorable character – bouncy and young and just so fresh and lovely it was impossible to not adore him immediately. I found Gilead’s character to be a little more mysterious and it was intriguing to watch his personality and secrets slowly blossom open. It took me a little time to come on board and see the two very different men as being compatible, but their chemistry and connection was completely undeniable.

The Bear Facts by Sean Michael

Nuk has been eagerly anticipating the opening of Cereus and is thrilled that time has finally come. One of the first clients, Nuk is blown away by Al, the IT guy. Will their attraction blossom into something more lasting or is this just a fleeting moment in time?

I’ve never read a polar-bear shifter story so this one was completely fresh and different to me. I really loved how Al was such good friends with Daniel – the dragon shifter and owner of the resort land. I felt that added a lovely extra element to this story. Super hot and sexy this was a lovely short story and I really enjoyed Al’s character in particular and how he and Nuk needed to find common ground between them despite their vast differences. It was lovely to see them both compromise and meet each other half way as they feel deeper in love and forged a delightful relationship.

These three short stories stood very well alone and I enjoyed how clearly collaboration between the authors had occurred since there were small cameos from other characters across the stories. Readers who have read previous installments in this world will also likely enjoy seeing snippets of other characters and it helps make the resort and world feel really well built and far richer for it. That said, readers who haven’t read anything previous to this shouldn’t feel put off – these stories and characters absolutely stand alone and can be read with nothing else prior being known.

A good, solid set of three steamy and erotic stories that I really enjoyed.

The Long Night by Lucy Felthouse – Spotlight

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Lucy Felthouse who is celebrarting the recent release of the paranormal erotic romance The Long Night.

Forever is a long time for a vampire… but is all that about to change for Lailah?

Lailah’s neighbour, Loulou, is well known for hosting wild, extravagant events, so as Lailah heads over there for the much-anticipated annual Halloween bash, she thinks she’s prepared for pretty much anything. Soon after arriving, though, she discovers Loulou has outdone herself—and presented Lailah, who, as well as being an actual vampire, has come in fancy dress as one, with the opportunity to have a little joke at her own expense.

What Lailah’s not prepared for, however, is the appearance of three gorgeous men in uniform. Their out-of-place getup piques Lailah’s curiosity, and as polite conversation turns to flirtation, Lailah gets the weirdest feeling nothing is ever going to be the same again.

But how will Luke, Leo and Jack react when they discover Lailah’s vampirism isn’t just for Halloween?

Note: This novella has been previously published as part of the Duty Bound with Bite anthology.

I’m prepared for pretty much anything on my way to my next-door neighbour’s house for her Halloween party. Loulou is well known across north London for her wild, extravagant events, a few of which I’ve had the good fortune to be a part of—they’re always good fun. So I’m expecting something spectacular—she wouldn’t let me help, or even have a sneak peek at the decorations, so whatever she’s gone for will be a complete surprise to me.

The nearest streetlamp to our houses is providing just enough light to show off her outdoor decorations. I smile as I push open her fake-cobweb-covered front gate, duck as a plastic bat swoops toward my head, then make my way up the garden path, which is lined with creatively carved pumpkins, the tealights nestled inside each helping to illuminate the way to the door.

For all intents and purposes, I’m walking through a graveyard. Headstones in varying states of decay litter the grass. Noises ring out periodically—the hoot of an owl, the howl of a wolf, the yowl of a cat. There’s even a dry ice machine secreted somewhere, as a sinister, low-lying fog hovers over the ground.

I jump and gasp as I pass a large tree to find a decrepit, bloodstained zombie grinning at me from behind its trunk. Tutting, then chuckling at my own silliness, I mount the three steps up to the porch, where more of the same greets me, as well as some macabre smiling skulls, blood dripping from their mouths and spiders crawling from their eye sockets. It’s great, it really is, but there’s nothing unusual about any of it. This is Loulou we’re talking about—I’m waiting for the ‘wow’ factor, that extra something she’s thrown in to make her party an event that’ll be talked about for weeks, maybe even months, to come.

A sign with Gothic blood-red print is fixed to the door.

PARTY THIS WAY. ENTER IF YOU DARE.

Obviously, I dare. With a roll of my eyes, I depress the door handle—which has a large plastic spider hanging off it—and step inside. It’s only a few minutes past the official start time for the party, so it’s still pretty quiet. I’m fine with that—it gives me the opportunity to have a good look around at what Loulou has done with the décor before it gets too busy, too heaving with bodies. Live ones, that is. The dead ones dotted around the place don’t seem to care one way or the other.

I don’t bother announcing my presence to my neighbour—we’ll find each other before long. Instead, I immediately start exploring, exchanging the occasional polite nod with other early partygoers as we pass. The scent of pumpkin spice hangs in the air. So far, so typical—more cobwebs, spiders, pumpkins, skulls, bats, black cats, ghosts, witches, zombies, black floaty material draped everywhere, creepy music…

Then something catches my eye. Toward the back of what is usually Loulou’s enormous living room—the properties in this area, including mine, are huge—is a sectioned-off area. A partition, designed to look like an old stone wall. It’s dark, gloomy, spooky. I love it. And that’s before I notice the sign affixed to the arched doorway embedded in the wall.

THE VAMPIRE’S LAIR

A snort escapes me, and I quickly look around to make sure nobody noticed. I’m alone, thankfully—probably the others are diving into the drinks and snacks which are most likely laid out in the dining room, getting their hands on all the best stuff before other people arrive.

I open the door carefully, since I don’t know how sturdy this whole shebang is, and I don’t want to wreck it—Loulou’ll kill me—and enter, eager to find out exactly what Loulou thinks a vampire lair looks like.

You’d think she’d have an idea, really, given she lives next door to one. Not that she knows, of course—I don’t make a habit of announcing my true nature to people. It just results in disbelief, asking for proof, which then often leads to screaming and freaking out. I just can’t be doing with that kind of drama. Therefore I keep my supernatural status to myself, and move around just often enough to ensure people don’t start to notice I haven’t aged a day since they first met me.
