In rural Florida, 1903, Mae Hinton cares for her father and younger brothers, trying to fill her deceased mother’s shoes. Her life is shattered and her faith tested when her innocence is stolen by roving miscreants. Left unconscious, unable to identify her attackers, she pledges to help other victimized women. She pursues an education and learns to deal with bigoted ministers, well-to-do hypocrites, and men with higher regard for their livestock than their women.

Edward Finch is nearly done with medical studies in England when he comes home for the holidays. Love flourishes, and Mae seems close to achieving her dreams of both true love and a haven for victims, once she can explain to him why she carries a pistol. Then her new-found happiness is upset by a murder as one of her attackers returns.

She may settle this herself…or she may find that vengeance truly belongs to God.

Horse trainer Stone Dempsey’s life is all about the ride—with horses and women. He uses his equine talents to impress the country club set and earn money for Smoky Mountain Reining Horses. When his drug-addicted sister deposits her sick baby on his doorstep, he’s suddenly saddled with real responsibility.

Dr. Emmersyn Cole’s goal of starting a practice in her favorite place on earth is finally coming to fruition and she is not going to be sidetracked. Everything is going great until Stone swaggers into her life, half-dressed with a smile that could melt her insides. She’s determined to keep her distance…until he rushes into her grandfather’s home, clutching a feverish baby, terrified and vulnerable, and her heart’s hard shell begins to crack.

Doctors recommend taking levitra 60 mg almost an hour before sexual activity.
In only a few short weeks, Stone’s wayward heart suddenly relies on two women—one who needs him—and one that he might not be able to live without.

Stone can’t help but be attracted to pretty women, but he’s a little gun-shy when it comes to chasing after the delectable Dr. Emmy – his boss’s grand-daughter. Emmy knows full well that while Stone was an exceptional horse trainer, genuinely one of the best, but his personal reputation was that he’d chase pretty much anything pretty in a skirt. And while Stone might make her mouth dry and her knees weak, Emmy doesn’t want her heart broken. Can they each resist the temptation of the other?

I found this to be a fun and wonderfully warm-hearted cowboy style story. Despite his hound-dog ways, Stone was written in a light and cheerful manner and I found myself instantly warming to his character. Being fairly confident that he’d fall head over heels for Emmy just made his eventual blind-siding even more wonderful to read. I also really enjoyed Emmy’s character – I found her strong and relatable and while understandably cautious over Stone’s philandering reputation she didn’t get her knickers in a twist over it or hold his previous conquests over his head in a way I often find unbearable in a heroine. They each went into the eventual relationship with their eyes open and with open hearts and this was just lovely to read and experience with them both.

This has all the elements of a really good romance story to my mind: two strong and capable characters, a few small bumps along the road with easily-addressed misconceptions, a sick little baby and a small-town, cowboy style community with plenty of vibrant and interesting secondary characters. Emmy and Stone become intimate from around half-way in the story. Readers should be aware that there are some sizzling love-making scenes that might make more traditional “doors-closed” readers a little wary. But while the scenes are graphic I found them well-written, tasteful and not too over-the-top.

While I can understand some readers might find this story formulaic and “been there done that” I personally would urge most readers to give this book a chance. While sure, I could write out a dot-point of how the story progresses and it would sound tried-and-true – and possibly like a dozen similar stories – the joy I found from this really comes from the characters, their interactions and a warmth from the familiarity of it all. This is like eating your favourite comfort-food-dinner for the thousandth time, while it might at a glance seem similar to dozens of other meals, it still leaves you happy, warm and feeling deeply satisfied.

A solid read with enjoyable characters, a great plot and some steamy romance to keep you eagerly turning the pages I found this to be a great read. Recommended.

Talk about a killer kiss…

Being a former soldier with PTSD takes its toll on Aaron and has wiped him clean of optimism along with having dreams. But he’s no longer sure if he’s living in reality or fantasy after he tries to save a friend and finds his world filled with women who have wings and…Valkyries.

Adala kills. Not on purpose. She’s a Valkyrie—from just one touch, she takes warriors to the afterlife. Oh, but she’d give anything for a break, for normalcy, to have one day of not wearing her legionnaire uniform. When she’s asked to talk to the human Aaron to help him understand just what he’s in for when he tripped into her world, she jumps at the chance, even though she knows Aaron more than she cares to admit, even though she has an insane crush on him, even though she can’t touch him at all. But she gets to wear jeans and talk to a man—a real-life, hero of a man.

From her adorable made-up swearwords to when she wears his clothes, from the fact that she’s hundreds of years old to her pet Pegasus, Aaron falls hard for the shy Valkyrie. Dare he risk his life for a kiss? He’s thinking about it, because already he’s given her his heart.

With This Heart is a standalone story, that’s part of the With These Wings Series—books that mix rock-hard military men with feathered-fantasy femme fatales for a sizzling hot adventure to find love. Join Chanticleer winner, Red L. Jameson, for more of this heart-tugging fairy tale series.

I’ve read a lot of paranormal romance, but have to admit the characters in this one were new for me in the genre: Disir’ and Valkyrie… really? It was refreshing, honestly, to move away from the norm. Throw in a Pegasus, and this reader was tickled pink.

Soldiers with PTSD is not as unique, but I appreciated the “guardian angel” angle here. Also, while the book stands alone here, it was obvious from chapter one (when we meet the Disir’) that there was a story prior to this one. It didn’t inhibit my understanding of things from the story, but I did feel a little frustration in knowing that my experience in reading this book might have been richer if I’d read book one.

That said, Adala in particular was adorable. When Aaron uses the term “Wonder Woman” to describe her before he actually meets her, it stuck in my head and that’s who I pictured in the role. The two women shared some traits, but I’d say Adala was a little less naïve. And she gave a sweetness and lightness to what could have been a much darker story and I was a big fan of her swears. :: grin :: . She might have been my favorite character in the story, though her other paranormal pals were up there as well.

Aaron was tougher. Authentically written, he’s a man’s man, complete with rough language and is very much a man of action. His frustration at his PTSD is palpable. He wants to be the man he was, and he’s struggling so hard to get past it.

And the romance conflict is perfect: with one touch, Adala escorts warriors to the afterlife. Her touch kills. With a man as physical as Aaron, not being able to touch the person he loves is enough to drive him a little crazy. Don’t worry, they figure it out… this book includes some scorching hot sex scenes.

I do wish that this wasn’t quite so “love at first sight” … I mean, they’d sort of known each other for some time, indirectly, but I would have liked to seen them do the actually falling. It’s the best part of a romance for me. Even so, I did completely enjoy watching the two of them come together as a cohesive couple. To find areas of compatibility in and out of the bedroom. Adala helped Aaron in so many ways, and it touched my heart to see the man she helped him become.

If you’re looking for a hot, fun and unique paranormal romance to add to your TBR list, you should consider this one. Only, maybe add book one as well. If this book is anything to go on, you’ll be entertained for quite some time.

Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.

The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

How bad can a first impression be?

Dimple and Rishi’s first meeting is nothing short of epic. I can’t say much without spoiling it, but the first words out of Rishi’s mouth provoke a very strong reaction in Dimple. Rishi has such high expectations and everything that could go wrong does. It is certainly an unusual way to start a relationship. I felt so sorry for Rishi and couldn’t help but cheer him on in his quest to make things right.

Rishi is probably one of the best heroes I’ve come across. He has an air of quiet confidence about him that’s very appealing. I think it took a lot of courage to face Dimple after their catastrophic encounter, and even more courage to convince her they just might make a good couple. Rishi’s efforts to win Dimple over are sweet, thoughtful, and sincere. He’s persistent, not pushy, and never makes empty grand gestures. He does things because he genuinely cares about Dimple and wants to see her happy.

Dimple is very intense and passionate, which is wonderful. She’s also very driven to succeed in her chosen career and won’t let anything stand in her way, even love. While Dimple is impressed by Rishi’s attempts to win her heart, she maintains a guard around her heart. Dimple seems to believe she has to choose between love and her career, and that having one means sacrificing the other. I found this incredibly sad, especially since Rishi never once asked her to chose between him and her passion.

Dimple and Rishi are so good for each other. Their personalities are very complementary, and they push each other to be the best they can be. Of course, the road to their happy ending isn’t easy. They are young and on the cusp of a new phase in their lives. The world is scary, exciting and full of promise. As the summer ends, Dimple and Rishi have a decision to make. Is their relationship a summer romance, or something more?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading When Dimple Met Rishi. Dimple and Rishi are wonderful characters and it was a pleasure watching them fall in love. I’ll be reading more of Ms. Menon’s work very soon.

The definition of what it means to be human is about to be stretched to the limit.

I found Toby to be instantly likeable. He’d been through an experience that no living being in our current timeline has ever had the chance to try for themselves. There was a brief time during his introduction when I wondered how easy it would be to relate to someone in that situation, but it only took me a few sentences to realized just what an interesting guy he was no matter how anyone labelled him.

It would have been nice to see more attention paid to the world building. The narrator hinted at some pretty incredibly technological and medical advances in this version of the future. I was intrigued by what he described, but I also found myself wishing for more details about how they worked and how they’d changed the way society functioned. They involved such important topics that I couldn’t imagine them being something the average person accepted without any conflict at all.

The relationship between Toby and his mother piqued my interest in their backstories from the very first time they interacted with each other in this tale. I wasn’t expecting to read so much about this character’s life experiences before his procedure, but I liked the fact that I had such a clear understanding of why he’d opted to take a huge risk at such a young age.

Loss of Signal was full of thought-provoking questions. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys coming up with their own theories about what the future might hold for humanity.

Top Ten Tuesday: The Best Classic Novels

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Do you remember when you were in school and your English teacher announced that the class was going to read and discuss a classic novel for the next month or so? I was the kind of student who loved those announcements. While there were a few classics I ended up not liking at all, I did find something meaningful or thought-provoking in most of the ones we were assigned to read.

In fact, I ended up picking up many other classic novels on my own time because of how positive my experiences generally were with this genre. (No, I’m not Hermoine Granger, but I’d bet she and I would have gotten along well if we’d been classmates. Ha!)

1. Beowulf by Unknown.

As soon as my college literature professor told us that the author’s name of this poem is unknown, my ears perked up. I’m fascinated by orphaned creative works like this. There’s something mysterious about reading a story without knowing anything at all about the person or people who came up with it.

Finding out that Beowulf was going to attempt to slay a dragon in it only made me more interested in finding out how it ended.

2. The Pearl by John Steinbeck.

Wealth and power can corrupt people in all sorts of terrible ways that aren’t always clear in the beginning. Seeing those behaviors play out from the perspective of poor characters only made the author’s points stronger. While I can’t say much else about this without giving away spoilers, this is one of those stories that has stuck with me for years.

3. The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck.

This is actually the first part of a trilogy about several generations of a Chinese family whose elders were born into poverty and whose later generations grew up in much more luxurious surroundings. I enjoyed getting to know each generation from childhood to adulthood and even old age in some cases. Honestly, I wished this series could have kept going much longer than it did. The character development was really well done.

4. Beloved by Toni Morrison.

I’d studied slavery in the United States in school, of course, but this was the first book that really drove home how much those experiences affected not only former slaves but their descendants as well. I only wish that one of my teachers or professors had assigned this to us.

It’s something everyone should read, so I’m glad to see it’s been included on so many lists as an example of a more modern classic. I hope that the list of books that are considered classics grows much more diverse over time as well. Based on the amazing titles that are being released these days, I think it’s only matter of time before this happens.

5. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith.

Like Francie, the main character, I grew up in a family that really needed to pinch our pennies in order to make ends meet. Even though she and I were from different eras, I saw a lot of similarities between her life and my own, from the simple meals we rustled together from whatever was left in the kitchen when grocery funds grew low to how hard our parents worked to take care of us.

There’s something to be said for classics that look at the world from the perspectives of low-income and working class people.

6. The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe.

Honestly, I wanted to pick everything that Edgar Allen Poe has ever written for choice number 6 on today’s list. The Raven is an excellent place to start, though. I loved the way it personified guilt in such a chilling way from the very first time I read it.

7. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

So, who else has ever felt incredibly angry with one or more of the characters in a story? The first time that happened to me was when Hester Prynn’s community discovered she was pregnant out of wedlock by a married man and shunned her and her baby. Meanwhile, the man who helped her make that child didn’t face any real repercussions for his choices at all.

I can’t tell you how many times I scowled at those characters for behaving so awfully to Hester. Yes, their society found this sort of thing deeply shameful, but it made me furious to see the father getting off scot-free while an innocent child suffered and her mother was abandoned by a community that claimed to be righteous.

The classroom discussions my teacher guided us through about sin, guilt, legalism, repentance, and the double-standards of that society were well worth my initial reaction to this plot twist, though.

8. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

I hope things have changed since I graduated, but when I was a kid most of the classics we were assigned to read in school were about boys. The girls in these stories, if they existed at all, were often sidekicks or love interests. As much as I enjoyed the plots themselves, I often found myself wishing for more protagonists that were girls like me.

It was refreshing to find Little Women and read about the world from the perspectives of many different types of girls and women.

9. Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Allegories aren’t just for children. In fact, they can be an excellent way for adults to rethink, debate, and hopefully come to better understand the things they’ve been taught about the world, too.

I didn’t know the political history behind this book when I first read it. Looking back, it would have been really helpful to have a teacher explain topics like Stalinism to me before I started reading about a farm full of animals who decide to govern themselves.

10. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway.

I first read this when I was a little too young to understand what the author was trying to say, but the messages about persistence, bravery, and commitment mean more to me with every passing year. This is the sort of thing I’d recommend rereading every so often. It’s only become better and more meaningful as I’ve grown older, and I’m still nowhere near the age of the main character yet.

Did your literature instructors assign any of these titles to you when you were in high school, college, or university? Which classic novels or plays do you like?
