My Top Five Hobbies

Thanks so much for having me on your blog today! Dreamspinner Press released my new m/m shapeshifter novella, Alpha Unit One, New York, a few days ago. I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite hobbies. Let’s start from the bottom:

5. Hiking: I’ve always loved to hike. At first my husband and I hiked at least every other weekend. During our university time, we lived right next to the Palatine Forest, which was awesome for us. Later on we moved away, had kids, the whole package, and hiking took a backseat. Now that the kids are older, we hike again. We especially loved hiking in the Ardennes, but unfortunately I’ve got some health troubles that force me to take easier routes.

4. Swimming: This is something I started at the age of four, and my love for water has never changed. I don’t see that happening anytime in the future. I don’t swim as much as I’d like to, but this is also related to health issues.

3. Writing: Admit it, you thought that would be my number one, right? A few years ago you would’ve been right, but it’s become less important to me. Time factors into it because finding time is ridiculously hard. Also, my desire to sit in front of the computer for hours is, um, dwindling. 😉

2. Sewing: This is a relatively new hobby for me, although I’ve always been into crafts. I’ve done a lot of cross stitching and crocheting, but currently I love to sew. You can’t let me loose in a fabric shop because I’ll guarantee you that I’ll buy something. I can’t help myself when I see all the pretty fabrics and all the ideas of what clothes I could sew pop into my mind. 😉

1. Reading: As soon as I could read I was hooked. I’ve always, always read a lot. I also read fast, like 50 to 90 pages per hour, which is probably why I need to have so many books. The invention of e-readers is a godsend for me because now I have no problem storing my many books. I love to get sucked into a story, to fall in love with the characters and atmosphere. I hope when you give Alpha Unit One, New York, a chance you’ll be able to relax and feel like smiling.

The cat’s out of the bag….

In a world that accepts shifters as normal and thinks nothing of human/shifter couples, baby shifters and small shifters are treated as subpar. They are not allowed into the more dangerous professions, and their mates have legal control over what they can and cannot do.

Nicholas Reed is about to challenge the established rules. At twenty-eight, Nick has just been accepted into New York’s Alpha Unit One—an elite law enforcement team, composed equally of humans and shifters, that specializes in drug crimes. It is Nick’s dream job. But if they find out what he’s hiding, his career could be destroyed.

Enter a huge complication in the form of Sam Black, an older lion shifter who is the leader of the unit… and Nick’s mate. Nick wants Sam, and he wants to keep his job, but he can’t have them both. He also can’t choose between them.

Annoyed at my jumbled thoughts and ramblings, I tried to push everything aside and knocked at the door. A deep rumble called out, “Come in!”

For a second, my bravado faltered. What if they found out who I really was? All my hard work would be for nothing, then. No matter how good I was at my job, they’d kick me out before I could utter a single word. Guys like me weren’t supposed to become cops.

I pushed the door handle and walked inside, catching glimpses of a handful of people—mostly large people. That’s how it always was. Everyone had to be taller, bigger, meaner than me. It was like a law or something.

Oh boy, and there I went again with the rambling.

Seven pairs of eyes stared at me, waiting, assessing. After clearing my throat, I gave a small wave with the hand that still clutched the envelope.

“Hi,” I said. My voice came out soft and tentative. Screw that!

Putting more strength into my tone, I tried again. “I’m Nicholas Reed, your new colleague. I’m looking for Sam Black.”

A guy with short black hair, tinged with a few silver strands at his temples, unfolded from a chair. My nose informed me this was the guy who’d jostled me only a minute or so earlier.

Fuck, fuck, fuck! My boss was a lion shifter.

Okay, I could still do this. No stepping back, even though my inner voice screamed at me to leg it. How could I be so stupid as to want to associate with one of his kind?

Black strode toward me—or maybe I should say he swaggered—oozing self-confidence and… intoxicating pheromones. He smiled as he stretched out his hand. For a second, I got lost in his hazel eyes. All my defenses lowered at once. I wanted to rub my cheek against his in the worst way while my inner voice shrieked, filled with too many emotions for me to accurately compute.

I blinked, which effectively cleared my head. Bastard!

I knew what he was doing. He was checking to see if I’d fall for his pheromones and react so he could determine whether I was a shifter instead of a human. I ignored his hand, still held out there waiting for the obligatory shake, and sneered. “What? No conviction in the system?”

He dropped his hand and scowled. “Last guy who reeked of cologne as much as you do was no human. He fooled everyone, and he put the team in jeopardy.”

“So the guy was a shifter. What’s your problem with that?”

“Guy was a goddamn sheep, that’s my problem. First sign of trouble, he ran.” My new boss frowned suddenly. “How’d you pick up on what I was doing?”

Shit. That tiny inner voice yelled something unintelligible at me, but I’ve had years of practice ignoring it. “You sniffed the air, and let me tell you, it wasn’t subtle.”

A lanky man on my right threw a ballpoint pen onto his desk, laughing. “He’s got you there, Sam. Regarding your question about the shifter—that’s just how we roll here, kid. We don’t work with sheep or small shifters. They’re not dependable.”

“Then it’s your lucky day, since I’m simply human,” I stated, wishing I’d stop sweating so much.

Black circled me before his meaty hand landed on my neck. I stood stock-still as he swept my hair aside and whispered, “Then you won’t have a problem with me taking a whiff, right? You know, just to make sure you’re not another one of those lying idiots who could cost my team their lives.”

“Does that mean you’ve had trouble with imposters regularly?” I asked, curious even as a shiver crept down my spine. A huge beast sniffing at me tended to put the fear of God into me.

“Everyone wants to get on this team, but only a few are a good fit,” Black purred. “You’re sweating. Are you scared of what I’m going to find out, and what I’m going to do with you then?”

I had a pretty good idea what he’d do with me if he found out. “You’re sniffing at my neck, dude. Either you want to fuck me or bite me. Neither option sounds incredibly appealing.”

Gracie Hofner returns, and chaos reigns—including a couple of ghosts trying to save their granddaughter. But as Gracie dances from problem to problem, she’s unaware the music has been orchestrated into a murderous symphony.

When a different melody reaches Gracie’s ears from a guitar played by the new tenant living in her garage apartment, her tension vanishes. She listens unseen, cocooned in the shadows on her patio, and wonders who he’s longing for—and how it would feel for someone to crave her that much.

She can’t dwell on those thoughts, however. Problems of murder and missing prisoners abound. To say nothing of the ghosts. No one ever said being a law enforcement consultant would be easy.

Bluebonnet Ballerina follows Jalapeno Cupcake Wench and is the second book in The Amazing Gracie Trilogy.

“Ow! Ow! Ow!” Gracie Hofner twitched with each exclamation.

“For crying out loud, Gracie, you’d think I was trying to kill you.”

“You are. This is supposed to feel good.” Gracie tried to lift herself up.

Ariana held her down with one arm and tortured her with the other. “You’ve got a knot bigger than Thor’s fist in here. I’m working it loose.”

“It’ll work itself out.”

“No it won’t. It’ll give you a headache and neck spasms and a hitch in your side. Now lie still and shut up.” A hundred and ten skinny pounds of pure muscle and bone returned to attacking Gracie’s back.

Ariana Ayala was Gracie’s best friend, but when Ariana went into massage mode, arguing was futile. This was her first massage in her friend’s new studio, but nothing about her technique had changed. Gracie sighed and tried to relax. The more she loosened up, the harder Ariana dug. The woman had forty fingers and ten elbows, all of them poking Gracie’s sore back.

“Much better now.” Ariana continued to knead the same spot, except with much less pressure. That’s what it felt like, but Ariana always said the pressure was the same. The difference was the muscle had relaxed. “Next time, I’ll work on it again. It won’t be as bad. You must’ve had one hell of a week.”

“Something like that.”

“You can tell me later. Relax now. You’ll enjoy the rest of this.”

A chance meeting for Cade and Jillian throws Cade’s carefully crafted world into a tailspin, and has Jillian wondering if she can ever find the courage to love again.

Will heartbreak and deceit keep Jillian and Cade locked in the past? Or will they find the courage to follow their hearts?

The sense of community was strong in this story and I felt as if I was the new kid in town. This was my first Mary Jane Morgan book and I would consider reading other books by her. I enjoyed her writing style as the plot eloquently flowed from beginning to nearly the end capturing my interest the entire time.

Apparently, Choices of the Heart is the last book in The Wedding Chapel Series. I wish I could say that I read the previous books leading up to this final book in the series. I believe I would have enjoyed this book more if I had.

The hero, Cade, was a veterinarian. That is a profession that I have always admired and respected. I have a dog and a cat and we absolutely love our vet. Cade was a compassionate, gorgeous, and slightly insecure man due to his x-wife’s shocking news.

The heroine, Jillian, was in the driver’s seat as far as the budding relationship goes. She knew what she wanted and what she didn’t want and wasn’t willing to compromise. The story was mostly all about her thoughts and feelings. Cade had to decide if he loved her because if he did then he’d change to meet her needs.

I won’t pretend to know what it’s like to lose a spouse. When I read books with this plot I have to trust what I’m reading. I’m sure it’s one of those experiences that no one can understand unless they walk in those shoes. Jillian and Cade had emotional obstacles they needed to work through if they were going to find their happy ever after. They were attracted to each other and their relationship appeared to work. I was able to relate to them as a couple.

This was a heartwarming story that helped pass my time but it wasn’t filled with mirth. In fact the ending left me with mixed feelings of happiness and melancholy. Not my typical book glow euphoria. I’m almost certain that my heart felt this way because the ending was wrapped up in a quick non-elegant fashion with no epilogue.

However, I would recommend this book to others to read. It was a touching romance.

Jodi Taylor brings all her comic writing skills to this heart-warming tale of self-discovery. Known as “The Nothing Girl” because of her severe stutter and chronically low self-confidence, Jenny Dove is only just prevented from ending it all by the sudden appearance of Thomas, a mystical golden horse only she can see. Under his guidance, Jenny unexpectedly acquires a husband – the charming and chaotic Russell Checkland – and for her, nothing will ever be the same again. With over-protective relatives on one hand and the world’s most erratic spouse on the other, Jenny needs to become Someone. And fast! Fans of Jodi Taylor’s best-selling Chronicles of St Mary’s series will adore the quirky humour in this new, contemporary novel.

Jenny is The Nothing Girl. She lives with her aunt and uncle who protect her from the world and from being institutionalized. Her cousin Francesca has a brilliant life but has dropped her boyfriend artist Russell Checkland for TV producer Daniel Palmer. Russell unfortunately does not take this well and becomes a drunkard. Jenny bumps into him by accident and they meet up several times at Frogmorton Farm where she helps him decorate. He puts his cards on the table when he asks her to marry him. He needs her inheritance and she needs to get away from her aunt and uncle. She says yes and then all hell breaks loose.

This book is funny, serious and nasty all in one go. There are several hilarious characters: Marilyn, the ever hungry donkey, Boxer the neurotic horse, the tipsy housekeeper and various other waifs and strays both Jenny and Russell collect along the way. Then of course there’s Thomas, Jenny’s imaginary horse. However, someone is trying to either hurt or kill Jenny and she believes it might be Russell.

The ending (without giving any spoilers) is totally unexpected. A lovely cozy book to read with a hint of humor and a little bit of spine chilling suspense. I am definitely going to read this a second time as I enjoyed it so much the first read.

In “The Last Goodbye,” Cam and Merrick had to battle a village filled with trolls in order to win the right to bring home a golden scroll that would make them wealthy. The plot twists in this tale were a lot of fun. I surprisingly didn’t see any of them coming in advance, so I relished the chance to be surprised by what was going on in these characters’ lives before more details were revealed about who they were as individuals.

Most of the stories in this anthology were quite short. While I enjoyed diving into the different worlds for such brief periods of time, there were multiple instances where it would have been helpful to have more information about who the characters were. Something that is only a few pages long simply doesn’t have a lot of room to explore someone’s backstory or conflicts in life. There were times when this was an issue for me as a reader. For example, “Date Night” was about a woman preparing to go on a first date. Her entire story was finished in less than two pages, so there wasn’t time to explore her backstory or explain why she was being so meticulous about making sure she had everything she needed for the evening. I enjoyed the twist at the end, but it would have been nice to know more about who she really was and why she had such an unusual approach to dating.

“Taking It Back” began with a bang when an ordinary stretch of road was suddenly transformed into a lush, green field of grass. As many more manmade structures began to also disappear into thin air and be replaced by living things like trees and vines, I couldn’t help but to wonder what was causing all of this and if it would be permanent. The descriptions of the transformations were so vivid that I felt as though I were watching them happen right in front of me. I was also fascinated by how humans were affected by all of these drastic changes in their lives.

If you like flash fiction and similar short pieces of work, I’d recommend checking out Tantalizing Tales of the Horrific and Fantastic.

Mallory Metcalf Reynolds was born to a life of wealth and privilege in the Old South. But the Civil War turns her life upside down—she loses both her mother and her childhood sweetheart. When her aunt tries to help by sponsoring her debutante season, Mallory makes a fateful mistake and compromises her reputation. Her father’s death is the final blow, and she decides to start over, answering an ad for a mail order bride. But when she travels to the far west corner of Texas to meet her intended husband, she finds the vast unsettled country overwhelming and filled with danger.

Colonel William Gregor has made his reputation in the U. S. Cavalry fighting hostiles and border raiders. When he’s assigned to a remote West Texas fort, his efforts to stop recurring Apache raids are thwarted by the vast and treacherous mountain terrain. To add to his responsibilities, he’s a grieving widower with a daughter to raise. And in this rough-and-tumble outpost, he has few resources to aid him.

Mallory and the colonel grow closer but when he offers Mallory a marriage of convenience, she hesitates, knowing she must reveal her secret past. Events eclipse her confession, forcing the colonel to face down the Apache while Mallory receives an unexpected threat from home. If they survive their challenges, will the colonel forgive her? Even more important, can Mallory forgive herself for living a lie?

I’m not much of an Urban Dictionary follower but the synopsis for Mallory: The Mail Order Bride was an excellent example of “Hook and Reel”. Though, after finishing the book, the phrase “Hook, Line and Sinker” feels more appropriate. Where I come up with these analogies is astonishing to me. My husband says that my brain works like a spaghetti module when they are trying to predict the path of a hurricane. Regardless, if the synopsis sounds intriguing to you as it did to me then definitely give this book a chance. I was hooked and the plot reeled me in and the epilogue sunk me.

This happens to be book three in the A West Texas Frontier Trilogy. I did finish book two and went straight into book three. To be honest I haven’t read book one. I guess that’s further proof of my spaghetti module brain or the fact that these books in this series can be read as standalones. I was surprised after reading book two and immediately reading book three that the hero, William Gregor, was still at Fort Clark. I was left under the impression that he was going to have to be reassigned at the end of book two. I guess that doesn’t matter but I picked up on that. That little tidbit wouldn’t matter to a reader reading Mallory’s story first in the series.

Hebby Roman is fast becoming one of my favorite authors, for once again she wrote a superior quality romance story. There is depth to her plots lines that pull at my heartstrings. I am consistently engaged in the setting, with the characters, and with the thought provoking emotional conflicts.

The heroine, Mallory, has endured more than any one person should. To see her triumph over life’s challenges gives one encouragement and hope. It was touching to see William’s heart heal from the loss of his wife. Together, Mallory and William made a sweet romance.

The first couple of pages in this story start off slow and then all of a sudden I was on the edge of my seat, holding my breath. The narrative did settle down after that heart stopping scene and glided steady throughout the rest of the book. There was a couple of other tense moments but not as thrilling as the first. Needless to say this story provides the reader with unpredictable entertainment.

If you live in a tropical climate and need to escape to a vast and treacherous mountain terrain, then this is the book for you. With the dry air and cooler temperatures, this refreshing, lovely romance story makes the must read list!

He’s tall.
He’s dark.
He’s brutally handsome…
And he may be her only hope.

Kit Jernigan despairs of ever fitting in with her new tight-knit K9 unit—they’ve been through too much to welcome a stranger. So when a killer strikes, it’s a fight to convince her fellow officers to trust her long enough to catch the woman she knows is responsible.

She can’t do it on her own. What she needs most is a partner: local fire spotter Wesley March.

Wes knows in his heart that Kit is right, and he’s willing to leave his lonely tower to help her prove it. But the more time they spend together, the hotter the fire smolders…and the more danger they’re in. A member of the K9 unit’s inner circle is determined to have her revenge—no matter who gets burned in the process.

This time, it’s personal.

Wes couldn’t sleep. It wasn’t uncommon for him to have insomnia, but it usually happened when he was working on a project or was trying to sort out an especially tricky problem. This time, it felt different. Excitement was running through him, making him feel like he’d downed a half-dozen espressos in the fifteen minutes before he’d gone to bed.

He couldn’t blame caffeine for his sleepless state, though. No, it was all the fault of a beautiful woman who’d almost gotten shot by Rufus. The memory made him frown, hating the idea that she’d been in danger. After seven years working in his tower and living year-round in the small, adjacent cabin, Wes had earned the wary respect of his neighbors. He wouldn’t call them friends, but he’d be able to knock on their doors without getting his head shot off.

Probably.

Giving up on attempting sleep, Wes climbed out of bed and tossed his winter coat over his drawstring pants and T-shirt. Stuffing his feet into his boots, he clumped outside. He glanced at his watch. It was close to four, but the world was as dark as if it were the middle of the night. The stars were bright, though, giving the snow an eerie, blue-white glow. One of his favorite things about his home was how quiet it was, especially at night in the winter. In the small city where he’d grown up, there’d always been noise, sounds overlapping other sounds until it was impossible for him to concentrate on anything. Here, it was just the slight thud and brush of his boots connecting with the snowy ground, then the quiet beep and click of the tower door unlocking and opening.

Once upstairs, there were more distractions—the crackling of the fire in the woodstove and the whir and beep of various electronics he’d hooked to the motion sensor—but everything was familiar and expected. Usually, the sameness of his tower was comforting, but tonight he was restless. He’d gotten a taste of the heady excitement he’d felt in Kit’s company, and he wanted more. For the first time, the tower felt empty.

“Radio on,” he commanded, needing to hear human voices other than his own. After he heard the beep indicating that the digital radio had powered up, there was still silence, and he almost laughed. Why had he thought anyone would be communicating at this hour? It was tiny Monroe after all. “Radio scan.” Although he still didn’t have high hopes of hearing any communications, even with all the channels open, that at least increased the odds. Walking over to the bank of windows, Wes peered into the darkness, not seeing anything except his reflection.

“Dispatch, Unit 2242. I’m about to make a traffic stop on the 200 block of Main Street. Plates when you’re ready.”

The voice belonged to one of Wes’s more sane neighbors, Otto Gunnersen. The cop and his new wife, Sarah, lived a few miles away.

“2242, go ahead.” The dispatcher sounded sleepy. As Otto rattled off the license plate number, Wes wondered if Otto’s transmission had woken her up.

It wasn’t long before the dispatcher spoke again, sounding wide awake this time. “That plate comes back to a blue Honda Accord, registered to a William Kyle Yarden. He has a warrant.”

“Copy.” Otto didn’t sound fazed by the information, which wasn’t surprising. Although Wes didn’t know Otto well, he got the impression that it took a lot to rattle the big cop.

“2268.” Wes’s stomach jumped with excitement when he recognized Kit’s voice. “Need some help, Otto?”

“I’ve got this, thanks,” Otto answered. “Bill never gives us any trouble.”

“Copy. Let me know if you can use a hand. I’m just around the corner, so I could be there in five minutes.” Kit sounded a little disappointed, and Wes wondered if she was having just as much trouble sleeping as he was. He liked that idea. It made the early-morning hours seem less lonely when he knew that she was awake as well.

On impulse, he switched the radio to a seldom-used channel and picked up the wireless mic. “3537 to 2268 on eighteen.”

There was a pause long enough to make Wes wonder if she was scanning channel eighteen or if his attempt to reach out had been lost to empty air. “2268 to 3537. Wes, is that you?”

He smiled. “Yes, it’s me.”

“What are you doing up so late?” she asked. Her voice was warm, and it made his blood feel carbonated again, all those fizzy bubbles swirling through him. He couldn’t stay still, so he paced over to the windows, peering through the glass even though he knew he couldn’t see her house without the binoculars.

“I couldn’t sleep. How about you? Are you working nights now?” He hoped not. There would be fewer chances to see her if their sleep schedules were reversed.

“Nope to both. Can’t sleep, but I’m not on nights. Too bad. At least then I’d be paid for staying up.”

He moved from Window 1 to Window 12 and then back again, needing to move so his brain didn’t freeze with the pressure of talking to Kit. “Why can’t you sleep?”

Although he’d only met her a few times, the sound she made was already familiar, and he could picture her doing a half shrug as she made it. “I’m not sure. New place or too much excitement yesterday or something. Who knows. My brain does what it does, giving no explanations.”

“Yes.” Her words resonated inside him. “Mine, too. Our brains match in that way.”

“Please.” Amusement filled her voice, and it made his throat tighten with anxiety at the thought of her laughing at him. “As if my brain could even hope to match yours. I’ve seen your tower. You’re a stinking genius.”

The words ran through his mind a few times before he was reassured that she was complimenting him, and he ducked his chin, his face heating from pleasure and relief. As he lifted his head, his reflection in the window caught his attention, and he was glad Kit couldn’t see his flushed cheeks. Realizing that his pause had probably stretched too long, he scrambled to come up with an answer. “You’re just as smart. I think your brain could hold its own.”

“Now I’m picturing our brains battling it out.” Her words were filled with laughter, and he was pleased that he was actually managing to banter with her.

At least, he was pretty sure that they were bantering. He made a mental note to call his sister, Leila, later and ask.

“Are they using swords or light sabers?”

“Neither. They’re bouncing off each other like lumpy, armless sumo wrestlers.”

His own laughter took him by surprise, and he felt a rush of affection for Kit. It had been a long time since he’d been able to talk to anyone so easily. “Of course. That’s the only battle that makes sense.”

Tonya Duncan Ellis has written a series of books about 6th grader Sophie Washington, who is very well-drawn and true to life. The characters in this book are not perfect and are not stereotypes. They have their flaws and their foibles, which makes them very relatable.

The author describes the fear that Sophie and her family feel as they deal with living through a hurricane, and does it so well I could remember the hurricanes I have lived through. The quick decisions that have to be made. The not knowing what will happen.

Interspersed with this, Sophie learns a valuable lesson about judging and first impressions as she is forced to spend time with a classmate she really doesn’t like (and, quite frankly, is a bit jealous of–true to the nature of 6th graders and their friends).

This is a quick read at just over 100 pages and would be perfect for girls in the 4th – 8th grades (and some boys might like it as well).

Good job, Ms. Ellis.
