Top Ten Tuesday: Red, White, or Blue Book Covers

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

This week in honor of the 4th of July in the USA the theme is red, white and blue book covers!  I decided to approach this topic the same way I did for my post about books with my favorite colors and limit myself to books that are physically on my shelf in shades that are very close to those on the American flag.  I even managed to come up with an equal number of reds, whites, and blues, and one book that had all three!

Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales-This book is a lovely shade of red.

Grimm’s Fairy Tales-Another beautiful hard cover collection of fairy tales

The Icelandic Sagas I-I couldn’t resist adding one more gorgeous hard cover, and this picture really doesn’t do it justice (the blue is brighter than it appears here).  Though the blue leans toward navy and the white a bit gray, I’m still counting it as having all three colors.

Two-headed dogs and the re-animated dead? What is going on in the little village of Krakenshire?

It was a land and time far, far away, or so the story goes. Hear the offbeat narrator tell the tale of the undertaker and his quest for revenge and retaliation. Meet the whimsical and bizarre characters that occupy the quaint town along the way.

This strange tale follows the forlorn undertaker through the tiny hamlet of Krakenshire as he attempts to avenge his wife’s death. The village residents, on the other hand, never seemed to question her death. In fact, aside from the light gossip pertaining to the mental health of the undertaker, they nearly forgot all about the once-happy couple. Almost oblivious, they were. One might even say they were mysteriously distracted.

The undertaker, however, saw the secretive spell the resident had succumbed to- and it all emanated from from the factory on the hill. The evil empire, as he referred to it, was a chemical company contaminating the very village they resided in. And he was most resolute on reaping revenge on such a nefarious neighbor!
Oh sure, there were others who were not sickened by the spell, other villagers who indeed did perceive the poisoning being perpetrated. But they were, well, let’s just say, they were otherwise occupied with their own oddities. And most peculiar oddities they were! Now I won’t go into the particulars here, but suffice it to say, the town was rather teaming with the twisted type, a loony lot for certain! And our poor undertaker has to endure the endless eccentricities as he tries to exact his revenge.

Will the undertaker find justice, or will he just go mad? More importantly, will you be brave enough to make to the end?

Suspend your disbelief and prepare for something delightfully surreal before diving into this book.

The plot twists were fabulous. Many of them completely surprised me, and even the ones that I predicted ahead of time were still a ton of fun to see actually unfold for the characters. I was especially impressed with how Ms. Davis played around with some of the most common tropes in the horror, mystery, and science fiction genres in order to suit her purposes. There was so much creativity in her writing that I’m going to be keeping a close lookout to see what she publishes next.

I would have liked to see a little more time spent on character development. As intrigued as I was by the undertaker’s bizarre theories about what was happening to his community, I didn’t feel like I got to know him as an individual as well as I would have liked to. His personality was well-described when it came to his obsessions and fears, but the rest of who he was didn’t get the same amount of attention.

This was such an amusing mystery to solve. I’ll admit to being a little confused about what was going on in the beginning, but that was mostly due to the fact that the main character was just as puzzled as I was. As soon as things became clearer, I was hooked on the plot and couldn’t wait to find out what was really going on in this sleepy and disturbingly happy town.

I’d heartily recommend The Undertaker’s Revenge: A Love Story to anyone who loves the thought of mixing multiple genres together in the same tale.

New starts mean new rules. Can she triumph through the challenges?

My boyfriend believed I was too gutless to leave. He was dead wrong. I graduated Harvard early and left his hot temper and everyone else behind for Dallas. Determined to make it on my own, I land a second job bartending at the neighborhood pub, smack in the middle of drama central, where almost every jerk in the neighborhood hits on me.

A week into the job, the neighborhood’s very popular drug dealer falls to his death a few feet from the table I’m serving. The cops say suicide, but the hot guitar player in the house band and I suspect foul play, and we intend to prove it. Digging deeper, we’re drawn closer to each other. Then we make a shocking discovery. We know the murderer.

This was not your typical romance suspense/mystery story. In fact if you are familiar with the television show Melrose Place that aired from 1992-1999 then you’ll know what to expect from this story. Melrose Place focused on the lives of young adults who lived in an apartment complex in Los Angles. There was tons of scandalous drama among the young adults with murderous plots and steamy romances. Well, Becker Circle is focused on young adults who live in Becker Circle, Dallas – a neighborhood much like Melrose Place.

I think this would be a great read for a younger person than myself, perhaps in their twenties. I’m way past the single dating bar scene. I prefer my romance books to have a developing love story involving a leading lady and a leading man throughout the story with a happily ever after.

The book is written around a character named Gillian. It’s written in first person which is not my favorite perspective when reading a story. However, it was well written therefore I was able to follow it. It was evident that the author did her research in regards to establishing the bar scene setting. I found myself engaged with the plot which consisted of several twists among the cast of characters. I feel the characters were thoroughly developed to give the reader a sense of camaraderie among the young adults dwelling in Becker Circle.

Gillian was an intelligent girl from Harvard without any common sense. She obviously couldn’t hold a quarter between her legs if she had to. I’m not sure how realistic this story actually is but it was entertaining. I feel like there was a piece missing in regards to her hot tempered ex-boyfriend. It was implied that he might be coming after her since she left him but that plot thread went dormant. For me that is a loose thread left unresolved.

This was definitely more of a suspense/mystery story than it was a romance. I did feel as if I was on the edge of my seat a few times. I think Becker Circle is worth recommending as long as you know what you are getting into. I can think of a couple of my friends who might like this book. One thing for sure is, Becker Circle  made me appreciate my boring middle aged, married life.

Blue Collar. Filthy as Hell.

Are there any good men left in the world?

After her boyfriend dumps her for a younger, prettier, thinner woman, Eva decides to hit the road without looking back. She has no destination in mind, and she’s determined never to trust a man again.

Dalton is a firefighter in Hope Springs. At thirty-nine, he’s settled in for a lifetime of bachelorhood—until Eva drives into their small town. She’s skittish, angry, and refuses to give him a chance. But he’s never been a man to give up easily.

Eva quickly learns that small town boys like to play dirty. She can’t seem to say no to Dalton’s strong body and wicked imagination. Giving him her heart is another story. The more she falls for him, the more she wants to run.

They both have demons to face. Can Dalton convince Eva to settle down and give them a chance at forever?

Eva couldn’t tell if she’d gone crazy or made the best choice of her life. Selling her apartment and most of her worldly belonging she was determined to leave her boring life – and heartbreak – behind and just drive until she found a new adventure. When Eva hears an advertisement for seasonal rodeo work it sounds like exactly what she needed. Dalton was a fire-fighter and despite the fact he was ready to be in a serious, long-term relationship he’d not yet found the right woman and he refused to settle. When they meet by chance each is instantly smitten. Will this just be a fling or can they each find what they’re looking for?

I could both sympathise and empathise with Eva’s dilemma – because who hasn’t wanted to sell everything and hit the open road once in a while? I thoroughly enjoyed the pacing of this story – both giving me as a reader enough time to get to know Eva and Dalton’s characters, but not dragging along slowly. I felt the co-authors did a great job letting Eva and Dalton’s relationship flourish and show me how they connected and grew together, but still kept the heat and sensual level high. Although they both fell in lust quickly, and the chemistry between them was intense, I was pleased to see they also connected on an emotional level and that made the story both more enjoyable and believable to me.

While I admit I found it somewhat unusual that Eva wanted to run *away* from the sexy, stacked and wanting-a-serious-commitment Dalton, the authors managed to convince me Eva was commitment-shy and not crazy. Once I got my head around that aspect of the plot, I found it actually quite intriguing that (for a change) it was the hero who wanted to settle down and start a family and the heroine who had itchy feet and wanted to travel and live a carefree life. Watching Dalton convince Eva that small-town living wasn’t a bad thing and that settling down wouldn’t be the end of the world was really quite interesting.

There’s a decent sub-plot of a fire-bug and a whole bunch of smoking hot sex between Eva and Dalton. Overall this story really ticked the boxes on all the stuff I love in my steamy romances. With interesting characters, a few plot twists and a lot of sexy fun this was a great short read.
