From the scorching plains of Persia to the opulent city of Babylon, Ashley and Alexander continue their sensuous and passionate journey through history. Alexander the Great is now king of Persia and Greece but his reign will be short. Time-travelling Ashley knows when her husband will die. She’s determined to cheat Fate and save Alexander and her children, even if it brings the gates of time crashing down. Following Alexander on a tour of his new kingdom, she plans her moves and bides her time. She must, however, convince Alexander to abandon his crown and his kingdom.

Read an Excerpt:

We had two weeks of marching through arid land before we came to Bampur. The most difficult part of our journey was over.

We’d lost more than five thousand souls in the desert. We arrived in tatters, deeply shocked by all the men, women and children who’d perished. We were relieved to be in a place where sweet water flowed in abundance and the grass grew green. It was like a rebirth, like arriving in paradise, and to top everything off the whole city had turned out to greet Alexander, conquering hero, and king of the world.

Alexander, conquering hero! The people lined the streets. They sat on the rooftops and were already hoarse from cheering by the time we were near enough to hear them.

Alexander, king of the world! Flowers fell like rain, wine flowed like rivers, the soldiers were feted and acclaimed, and Alexander’s name was on everyone’s lips. He had returned to his kingdom and the city, like a bride, opened her arms to him.

It was heady stuff for a man suddenly to realize that this was the summit of his glory. He had been fighting for so long that he’d forgotten why. He’d been struggling to reclaim a crown and consolidate a kingdom and now that it was done, suddenly, here it was. Here was his kingdom. It was just the edge, but it was here, and the people were weeping, screaming, and swooning when they saw him.

Even I, who had seen one of the ancient newsreels of the Beatles arriving in America, was impressed. The Beatles were an old hat compared to Alexander. These people had no television either. They had been waiting for months for a glimpse of the young king.

Here he was, and, by the gods! He was young! He was handsome! He waved and grinned and cried. His hair was bleached pale gold, his skin was burned deep brown, his eyes glittered blue and brown, and they were huge in his starving face. His purple cape was in tatters, but the mayor of the city gave him a new one. He wore the crown of Darius on his noble head and he carried the spear of a cavalry officer. His men had polished their bronze weapons until they shone in the red setting sun like drops of blood. The horses, wild with the scent of grass and water whinnied and screamed at the crowds, and the crowds screamed back.

Everyone cried, everyone laughed. It was our first homecoming and we were drunk within seconds with the ecstasy of ‘Nostos’, the return. We drank from the cups held out by every hand towards us. The men all had purple mouths and staggered drunkenly by the time we left the city and headed towards the encampment, but Alexander was drunk on glory. His eyes were brilliant and his color hectic. His face burned with fever and he had no voice left to speak.

Top Five Pet Peeves in Fiction by Sandine Tomas – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Sandine Tomas who is celebrating the recent release of The Music of Love. Check out the post below to find out how to win a copy of the book.

My name is Sandine Tomas and I appreciate the chance to introduce my book The Music of Love and share a little about myself. Because lists are always fun I thought I’d tackle a ‘Top Five’. Keep reading for a giveaway offer at the end!

Top Five Pet Peeves (In Fiction)
1. Unhappy endings.
I guess it’s a good thing I wrote a happily ever after romance, eh? I get that life sometimes goes south. And I’ve read some amazing tales that tore my heart out. But on the whole, I’d rather that the novels I read transport me to that place where hope wins out. The protagonist doesn’t always have to win, per se, but I need to see that they can – that at the end of the book there’s a path to take that will lead to that happy ending.

2. Internal inconsistency.
I am open to the wildest ideas with ease. New planets, zombies, love at first sight, win the lottery the first and only time you play – all fine by me. As long as there is an underlying logic. So the lottery winner has to buy at least one ticket–or at least find the winning ticket lying on the ground. And the rules that zombies play by have to be consistent within their own world. Zombies eat brains? OK … Except not the hero’s brain because the writer is too lazy to explain to me why the heck the hero’s brain isn’t tasty enough? That’s annoying.

3. Short denouement.
When a novel is good we race to the end. We want to see what happens to our heroes and how they get out of the situation the evil writer put them in. We want them to get together and proclaim their love. What I don’t want is for it to say ‘The End’ immediately at that point. Makes me shout, ‘Come on … a few more paragraphs would have killed you?’ Honestly, lots of times the couple getting together is where I want to start learning more – what happens then? How do they interact as a couple? How do they deal with the next obstacle? Can they handle it together? I always want more. I once read a book with three distinct epilogues. What a fantastic formula-buster that was!

4. Second person.
You find this difficult to read because it’s an odd way to interact with the character. The fact that he or she is addressing you directly keeps you very aware that you are being directed in what you are supposed to be thinking, rather than observing the characters’ actions and making up your own mind about the merits of what they are doing. You wish for the freedom to choose for yourself what key things to observe. (And if you are the author writing in second person, you really hope your reader isn’t like Sandine, who really finds slogging through it a chore.)

5. Too much description.
This is a fine line because too little description and I can’t formulate an image in my mind. But if an author loves their environment so much that we end up with two pages detailing where the kitchen stools are in relation to the closet door and what shade of lavender the towels are contrasted with the color of the flowers on the dining room table, I lose my place in the flow and that can make me stop caring about the characters. I tend to be a lean writer myself, offering just enough to let the readers form the outline of a picture, trusting them to fill in the specifics with their own imagination so we can get on with what’s happening and who is saying what to whom. I love dialog and think we learn the most about our characters when they are talking and reacting to what someone else is saying.

When Zachary gives Julian a second chance despite his deception, Julian thinks his curse might be broken. But then he’s faced with the impossible choice between a life with Zachary and living his dream of touring with the band….

Enjoy an exclusive excerpt from The Music of Love:

The girls in the office took Julian in hand. Even the usually formidable Rhonda took time off from her power-driven mode to partake in wedding fever. Julian decided it was like a disease among women. Some sort of strange psychic illness that robbed them of their senses. He kept having to explain that there would be no wedding dress, given that they were both, you know, men. They’d look at him with a sad, glazed expression and say, “Oh. Right.”

But then he’d find them later, still pouring over wedding magazines that mysteriously were sprouting all over the office, oohing and ahhing over the gowns no one would wear. Zachary took it with his usual exuberant puppiness.

Zachary cornered Julian in the coffee pantry early, waving a magazine in front of him. “See this one?”

Julian frowned. “For the hundredth time, I am not wearing a wedding dress!”

Zachary had the audacity to laugh at him. “No. Not that one. The tux. Think it would look good on me?”

That sleek black ensemble? It was easy to picture on Zachary’s regal physique. Truth was Zachary looked good wearing anything. Hell, Zachary looked best wearing nothing, but he didn’t realize he said that out loud.

“Yeah? Hmm. A nudist wedding.” Zachary struck a considering pose, gripping his chin. “I’d have to fight everyone off you, but it might be fun.”

“Shut up, you freak.” He smirked. “’Sides, nobody would notice my skinny white ass with your honeyed muscles on parade.”

Zachary grabbed his butt. “Not skinny. Just right. Fits in my hands just so… see?”

Julian jumped away. “Zach! Not here.”

Zachary looked around. “It’s 7:00 a.m. Nobody’s here yet. Only reason I’m here is because you make so much goddamn noise every morning primping, I might as well get up and ride in with you.”

Julian’s lips pursed into a twist. “I do not primp.”

He was met with laughter. “You would only hear that part.” Zachary’s face turned serious.

“Jules, you’re here at seven every day. You leave well past nine most nights. Except for the metro ride in, I feel like I hardly see you anymore.”

“We see each other all the time. We live together. We work together.”

“I guess, yeah, I see you here. But I didn’t mean only that. And I know it’s not just you. I mean I have my classes and we’re both always so busy. We haven’t really made any wedding plans….”

Julian swallowed down another strong gulp of coffee and felt his head start to solidify with every sip. “I wish I had more time too. Don’t you think I get frustrated? There hasn’t been time for anything. This is the first time I’m managing the office through a big case. Stuart’s coming to a head soon. Harrison himself is riding my ass.”

“Glad someone is.”

“What?”

“Nothing. Jules, I’m sorry. Never mind. You’re right.” Zachary turned and created a bunny fold on the page with the tuxedo he liked, before handing the magazine to Julian. “Think about the tux?”

Julian took it and held it absently against his side, already thinking of the million details ahead of him that day. “Sure,” he said quickly.

That afternoon, during five minutes when no one needed his attention, Julian picked up the magazine and looked at the bookmarked page again. Zachary would look magnificent in the tux. For the briefest moment, a tiny bit of the melody he’d heard looking into Zachary’s eyes in Texas flitted before him.

Brian bellowed out his name. And it was gone.

From glistening Jade Cove to the vintage skating rink, each step they take becomes a bittersweet reminder of the friendship they once shared. But just as the game brings Laura and Casey back together, the clues unravel a stunning secret that threatens to tear them apart…

Mesmerizing and unforgettable, Amy Mason Doan’s The Summer List is about losing and recapturing the person who understands you best—and the unbreakable bonds of girlhood.

A serious and thoughtful novel, The Summer List drifts back and forth in time, offering unique perspectives from our main character, Laura. She recalls the magic of friendships of teen years and especially the character of her closest friend. She contends with the character her friend has become, as well as her own; so this is curiously a novel of two selves in one, giving we readers an intriguing, though sometimes uncomfortable perspective.

The novel is less nostalgic than psychological, and makes us stop and think; not only about the characters, but about our own once-selves, choices, and reactions. Although billed as a ‘coming of age’ story, it’s more of a confrontation of the self. The main character and her relationships are under review, and in the midst of redevelopment, all so very on-purpose. The work is serious, perhaps–faintly–a touch too serious.

The picturesque backdrop and frequent recollections lend the story a dreamy, thoughtful air. It’s beautifully written, with incredibly believable conversations a highlight. There are awkward moments, heart-lifting moments, times of self-doubt. Doubt in others, both ordinary friends and in the old/potential romance.

Many moments are evocative, but never overdone, never theatrical. Its definitely a novel one can re-read, and find new nuances each time. It is hardly light entertainment, but it is enthralling. Doan is a masterful writer; on style alone, I must give this 5 out of 5 stars.

Unable to persuade her of the danger she is truly in, Charles resorts to kidnapping her to his family’s cottage. There they learn the true threat lies within their passion for each other. Can he convince her of the love in his heart or will he be left destroyed by this lady once more?

I can’t recall if I’ve ever mentioned this before but my brain is a lot like the fish, Dory, in the movie Finding Nemo. I have trouble remembering things. Fortunately for me if a book is outstanding then I’ll have a better chance of remembering it. On June 15, 2017 I read a book called Rescued by the Captain by Laura A. Barnes. I do remember absolutely loving it and wondering if there was going to be a second book. I am ecstatic to inform you that there is indeed a sequel called Rescued by the Spy.

Please indulge me by allowing me to quote from my review for “Rescued by the Captain” for a minute because I feel it absolutely applies to what I want to say about “Rescued by the Spy”. “The plot was masterly planned and executed with a steady and smooth pace. It was impossible to put the book down because the treason and romance plot kept evolving on each page”. It’s important for me to quote from my old review one more time. “While Thorn and Ivy achieved their happily ever after, I was left wondering if there will be a book two with Charles, Ivy’s brother, and Raina Le Clair, a lady who had a part in the unsolved treason plot. There needs to be a book two for Charles to complete his mission.” I am thrilled to announce that book two is indeed another masterly planned and executed story about Charles and Raina. One last quote before I jump into why I loved “Rescued by the Spy”. “Other than a serious craving for more, this was an excellent romance story that was very entertaining. The characters are well developed and I feel like I inherited another “book family”.” Book two continues to implement the well-developed characters that were equally entertaining as book one was and once again I was left with a serious craving for more since the treason plot was still left unresolved! However, this time around I know that there is going to be a book three! Yes, I will be reading book three! It’s going to be Zane Maxwell’s story and a mystery leading lady character! Maxwell is deeply involved in the treason plot. I have a feeling that Zane Maxwell’s story is going to be epic!

Okay, going back to why I told you my brain is a lot like the fish, Dory, in the movie Finding Nemo. Well, that’s because I read the first book a year ago and I’m ashamed I forgot some of the important details. I had a little anxiety attack wondering if I should go back and read book one. Let me reassure you that it does not matter if you read book one. The author did a fabulous job starting book two with a prologue dating six months earlier. If you read the prologue and feel lost don’t worry about it because as you continue to read the author will clear up any confusion you might have. She did a fantastic job mixing the previous book into the new book. Although, I do strongly recommend reading the first book just because it is a great story. I really enjoy Laura A. Barnes’ writing style. Both stories are filled with unexpected plot twists that kept me on the edge of my seat guessing what was going to happen next.

Raina, the heroine, is an intelligent strong leading lady who is quick on her feet. It was quite entertaining how she kept eluding Charles, the hero. Charles was persistent which contributed to the amusement between them. Together they made a great team despite all the secrets that existed due to the treason and the mission. I could feel their love and chemistry and must note that their love scenes are spicy. However, it’s par for the course since the entire book is piquant!

I can’t wait to read book three. I hope the villain, Shears, has an orgasmic demise! I look forward to being reunited with Thorn, Ivy, Raina, Charles, Zane and this new mystery lady. I can’t even imagine how they will all save their beloved land of England from that despicable villain, Shears. Anyway, in case it’s not obvious, I do highly recommend reading “Rescued by the Spy”. I hope you find it as enjoyable as I did.

IN THE BACK CORNER of the tavern, he sat there and scrutinized as his fellow man, made fools of themselves in their drunken debauchery. He never quite understood how as an ordinary person you wanted to lower yourself to this behavior. As he waited patiently for news of any kind, he observed as the men drank themselves into imbeciles.

Lifting the mug to his mouth he took a long swallow of the disgusting ale. It tasted like soap water. Drinking it quickly, he swiped his lips on the sleeve of his coat. He wanted to spit the brew onto the floor, but he resisted as the barkeep scrutinized him with suspicion. Banging the mug on the table he nodded at him for a refill.

The barkeep kept an eye on him as he spoke to a man at the bar. They exchanged words as the stranger glanced over his shoulder, looking him over. After they spoke a few more words, the man made his way out the tavern door. The barkeep shouted for the serving girl to bring him his refill.

Charles propped back in his chair, rocking it on its back two legs. When the tavern girl approached him, he landed the stool on all fours. She leaned over placing his ale before him, lowering her bosom in his face. When she rose, he was able to catch an eyeful of her breasts filling out of her tight dress. Her corset pushed her breasts up tight and high while her dress laid low right above her nipples. One quick tug and they would fall out into his hands; if he so desired.

She tipped his hat back, so she could look into his eyes and smile. “Is there anything else I can get for you sir?”

Charles pulled her hand away from his face tightening his grip. When she gasped in pain, he realized he needed to play his part better. To distract her, he drew her in his lap, nuzzling her neck. When she purred and went soft against him, he sensed she had forgotten the pain he inflected on her a few seconds ago. To continue his seduction, he traced his fingers across the neckline of her dress, his finger dipping inside to trace along her nipples.

“What is your name darling?”

“Bessie.”

“There is a lot you can do for me Bessie, maybe later after your shift is done?” He raised his eyebrow in question.

“I get off in a few hours, I have a room above we can use.” She told him as her hand wandered down to his lap.

“Well Bessie that does sound promising. In the meantime, do you think you can help me with some information?”

He continued to caress her as he saw her look back and forth between the barkeep and him. As a stranger in town; he was under suspicion. If questions were asked to too many people, it could draw unwanted attention upon himself. He nodded his head to the barkeep and smiled as if he enjoyed what was being offered in his tavern. That appeared to pacify the man he was a stranger passing through the village wanting a night’s enjoyment before he left.

“Bessie?”

When she noticed she was not being watched any more, she shook her head yes.

“Now Bessie, I do not want to get you in any trouble with your boss. So, when I ask you a question, just play along with me, okay, honey?”

Lia had always been the good girl, following the rules and playing it safe. In a new town and new state, she meets Jacob, an ex-tattoo artist and everything she’d avoided in her carefully cultivated life. But unlike her ex-fiancé Jacob sets her heart on fire and makes Lia weak in the knees. Can she take a risk on Jacob?

This is a steamy hot, sexy story full of explosive chemistry. Jacob and Lia hit it off almost immediately and even though both of them expected to only have a one night stand, neither could deny the attraction that burned between them.

I was really impressed that Jacob didn’t come across to me as just another “tattoo artist bad boy”. I was thrilled to find he was a complex character with a number of different layers. I was also impressed that while Lia might at first appear to be just another good girl testing out her wild side, there was plenty of plot and characterization to make me feel like it wasn’t just a token effort. I thought the author did a great job weaving the story together with a number of different parts together, particularly given the shorter length of the story. I finished this book with a real feeling of having got a lot of bang for my buck (so to speak). The author put a good amount of plot, characterization and sex into the short length and I was really impressed with the good pacing and balance of all these aspects.

A fun and sexy quick read, this was a great story I thoroughly enjoyed and I’ll eagerly be looking for more by this author.

Filled with danger and secrets, this story was such a fun read! I loved reading about William and Pippa in this historical tale. This is my first time reading anything by this author, so I haven’t read the others in the series, but after reading this one, I hope to read them soon!

Pippa is such a strong character, and I loved her commitment and steadfast nature. She isn’t afraid of hard choices, and she is determined to protect her family, and find out the truth. Likewise, William is self-assured and isn’t afraid to go after what he wants. When these two characters cross paths, things don’t always go as planned, or do they?

If you enjoy clean historical fiction, with strong lead characters, and Christian values, this one is sure to please!

An archeologist searches for a lost treasure in the Mayan jungle through many adventures, encountering a fascinating man from another time who teaches her to love again. She travels back in time to Palenque and the golden age of Mayas.

Imagine going back in time over a thousand years to a place filled with beauty and danger at every turn. Modern-day archaeologist, Sienna, does just that. She has lost her family and now finds herself, through an accident, back in time to the days of a great king of the Mayan people. This would certainly be a scary situation, but she meets a gorgeous warrior prince, Prince Balam. What makes this guy even more intriguing is that he is also a shaman and has a unique supernatural talent. This talent comes into play in the book, when Sienna finds herself in one of her many face-offs with death.

The two develop feelings for each other. The problem is, they each have a goal, and their goals clash with each other. Another issue arises: Prince Balam has been promised to another woman, and peace between cities may depend on him honoring his obligation. Despite these problems, and their developing love, the Prince Balam and Sienna keep their honor in check. Both are very likeable characters that readers can relate to.

Their deadly enemies present such obstacles that we get to see Prince Balam and Sienna at their best, facing such situations. Some enemies are obvious. However, others, not so much. There is a mystery here. The two suspect certain people of being against them, but are they? The author has done a good job surprising readers at different points. The plot moves along at a fast pace, making this a page-turner. The setting is exotic and therefore fun to read. Sometimes though, certain things are confusing. Does Sienna believe Prince Balam in the beginning or not? And there is some telling and not showing, which distances the reader a bit. However, this is not a common problem in the book. Near the end there was a drastic turnaround of events. I found myself wishing certain things were explained better because there was a bit of a jump. I did really enjoy the book though and was satisfied with the very ending. I recommend this to those who love time travels or exotic settings.

Fight promoter Zack Grayson is on the prowl for a rising star. As the top recruiter of a prestigious MMA promotion company, he wants to take someone where he was never able to go: the top of the professional league. He didn’t expect that someone to be the woman he loved…and left.

Top-ranked MMA amateur fighter Shayla “Shilla the Killa” Tyler built walls around her heart when Zack left her seven years ago—and again when her husband turned violent. Now, seeing Zack is nearly enough to send those walls crumbling. But she can’t risk the exposure of the limelight, and she definitely can’t risk another heartbreak.

As Shayla and Zack grow closer, though, business turns personal. And once their passion unleashes, there’s no going back…

A love story that really packs a punch! This is my first time reading Sarah Castille’s work, but I loved her Redemption characters, and can’t wait to read more of her stories! While this book has plenty of steamy sex, it also has a powerful story about overcoming challenges, forgiveness, and love.

Shayla has had a hard life, from her childhood sweetheart leaving her, to a messy marriage, but she has a fighter’s spirit, and refuses to give up. Deciding to start training in MMA, the last thing she expects is to be reunited with the man who broke her heart. I love the chemistry between Shayla and Zack, and adored their relationship in the beginning. I also enjoyed Shayla’s friendship with the people at Redemption and her co-workers Carly and Joe.

While I love how Zack and Shayla relationship is by the end of the story, I did have a problem with Zack’s possessiveness. One moment he would be sweet, the next he would be making Shayla’s choices for her, the very thing that tore them apart to begin with. The chemistry was there, but I felt like there relationship was mostly physical, which is something both characters say they don’t want at different points in the story. They both want love and yet I feel like they spend most of the time either ripping each other’s clothes off, or fighting. Before someone says it, yes I know this is erotic, it’s about the sex. But true relationships also need friendship and trust, and it seemed like Zach struggled with this part. Shayla even got upset at one point about his ‘cave-man behavior”, much of which seemed to come from this abusive childhood and his doubts and control issues after his fight with Okami.

That said, I loved how things turned out, it just seemed to take one step forward, two steps back through most of the book, that said, there was plenty of make-up sex to keep the story moving. If sexy alpha males are you thing, with mild BDSM suggestions, and steamy sex, then give this book a try!

Top Five Tips to Make a Flight More Pleasant by Bru Baker

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Bru Baker who is celebrating today’s release of Under a Blue Moon, a Camp H.O.W.L. book.

Top 5 Tips To Make a Flight More Pleasant
I fly a fair amount, which is probably why I like to put my characters on airplanes, too. That poses a much bigger problem when your character is a werewolf, though. Can you imagine how terrible it would be with all your senses amplified?

Today I’m sharing my top 5 tips for making a flight more tolerable.

Drown out the sound

My husband gave me a pair of noise-cancelling headphones, and I absolutely love to use them on planes. They drown out the roar of the plane so you can listen to music without blasting it at ear-drum rocking levels. I couldn’t believe how much difference it made.

Take the pressure off

I used to hate to fly because my ears are sensitive to the pressure changes. More often than not I’d actually lose my hearing during a flight–and even for a few hours afterward. It was annoying and painful, and no amount of popping my ears in-flight seemed to help. When I started flying with my kids, I bought them something called Earplanes, a product that normalizes the pressure in your ears so you don’t have to pop them. They also made them for adults so I gave it a try, and now I panic at the thought of flying without them. I only need them during take off and landing, but man, what a difference they make!

Don’t overpack your under-the-seat carry on

I’m a work in progress on this one. As much as I try to go minimalist, I always seem to end up with a lot more in there than I need. Do you really need your Kindle and four paperback books? Will you actually eat the five different snacks you’ve stuffed in there? Do you really need two sweatshirts just in case? Trust me, I survived a 30-some hour trip from hell with an overnight layover with just my electronics and chargers, one sweater, and my headphones. Your back will thank you when you don’t have to lug a heavy bag around.

Be realistic about how you want to spend your flight

I always bring my laptop so I can work, but most of the time I end up reading on my Kindle or watching the in-flight movie instead. If you’re honest with how you want to spend your time, it makes it easier for you to pack your bag with things you’ll enjoy. If you know you’re just going to watch movies, then you can prepare by downloading them in advance so you have a selection. If you’re going to work, make sure you have a way to keep your battery charged and everything you need so you can avoid the frustration of being 30,000 feet in the air without a critical file downloaded.

Bring a treat

This doesn’t have to be food (but mine always is–I always have Sour Patch Kids on a flight!). If you’re always cold on planes, indulge in a light-weight and easy-to-pack blanket that feels awesome on your skin. Buy yourself a new book or magazine you can look forward to after take off, or carry your favorite chocolate or snack if that’s what will help you relax. Or even order a drink–whatever can help you chill out will help you have a better, more restful flight. Just don’t bring a burrito–everyone will hate you.

Once in a blue moon, opposites find they’re a perfect match.

He has no trouble fitting in at the camp—except for Nick’s stubborn refusal to acknowledge the growing attraction between them, and his ridiculous stance on dating humans. Traveling never brought out the best in Nick. He was self-aware enough to realize that, and he could even pinpoint what about travel was a stressor. If he had a patient who complained of anxiety, headaches, and poorly bottled-up rage while traveling, he would help them come up with coping mechanisms for the psychological stress and figure out how to best mitigate the physical symptoms.

But like almost all psychologists, he was a bad patient. He didn’t do his homework or follow the steps he’d prescribe for anyone else in his situation. Hence his sour mood and the blinding headache he had at the moment.

Really, though, he’d checked when March’s full moon was, and it had been at the beginning of the month. He hadn’t realized there was another one at the end and that it coincided with the day he was flying to Indiana. Astronomers called them blue moons, but he called them a pain in the ass.

Nick took a deep, grounding breath and tried to ignore the scents it brought with it. Someone three rows back had brought a burrito on the plane. Nick was pretty sure that was on the psychological checklist for sociopaths. Lack of remorse or shame? Check. Pathological egocentricity? Check. Brings strong-smelling foods into enclosed spaces? Double check.

Planes were always difficult because of the sheer number of people who were on and off of them in a day. His sister swore by essential oils— she’d dab herself with peppermint or something else bitingly astringent before getting on a plane, overwhelming her senses with an unpleasant but at least controlled scent. His Alpha always flew with earplugs and noise-canceling headphones. He claimed that with a light-proof eye mask, it was possible to sleep on a plane and wake up at your destination, skipping the hours of discomfort in between.

Nick called bullshit on the last part. There was absolutely no way a werewolf could sleep on a plane. Maybe if he was flying with no one on the plane but his Pack. Maybe. But sitting in a vulnerable position among a bunch of strangers? And worse, human strangers who boarded a plane with their AXE Body Spray, flowery fabric softener, and pungent burritos? Granted, they couldn’t know how those strong scents assaulted a supernatural nose, but surely even humans thought that stuff stank.
