Smoking hot!

Wow … when the blurb says “love at first sight” it isn’t kidding. The relationship between our hero and heroine goes from zero to 60 in about two pages.

I read this story knowing it was short, so I understand that it’s tough to fully develop a plot or characters in so few pages. I’ve tried to figure that into my feelings about the book, and into my rating. The author is definitely talented. Her skill is undeniable and her voice is fun and easy to read, and I have no issue with that at all. And, although there were a few editing errors and wrong word use, technically, it was a good story.

My issue was the speed of the relationship development. “Love at first sight” doesn’t have to mean leaping into bed moments after meeting someone (and before knowing anything about them … integral to the story is the fact their families are enemies, but since they barely get each other’s first names before getting naked, they have no idea). They progress quickly to a little very light bondage, which felt out of place since that requires a bit of trust and how do you build real trust in a day? I’m not adverse to a story with plenty of sex (especially well-written sex, which this was, though a bit less descriptive than erotic romance), so it wasn’t that abundance that was frustrating, just that I felt as if the plot suffered because so much space was given to sex instead of story.

Still, I really did appreciate the author’s voice and I would definitely pick up another one of her books to try. And if you prefer lots of heat in your stories, this may be a great choice for you to read.

I stopped believing in monsters long ago. But I knew I wasn’t imagining things when I found one in my kitchen baking muffins. I’d seen him before: lurking in my closet, scaring the crap out of my five-year-old self. Turns out that was a misunderstanding, and now Maurice needs a place to stay. How could I say no?

Don’t get me wrong, I like helping people–and non-people. But this ability has turned me into a gourmet feast for an incubus, a demon that feeds off emotional energy. Now, brides are dropping dead all over town, and my home has become a safe house for the supernatural. I must learn to focus my powers and defeat the demon before he snacks on another innocent woman and comes looking for the main course…

Monster in my Closet is addicting. It’s a happy novel with a dark edge and it tells the story of an ordinary woman who finds out she’s extraordinary. As soon as she accepts the truth, the paranormal world comes at her like a supernova, exploding all her misconceptions of reality and making her life richer, complicated and, in good and bad ways, exciting. Taking the ride with Zoey, the heroine, is worth every flip of the page, every chapter and every moment spent discovering just how mysterious and unconventional her life will become.

The reason why I called this book happy is because for all the death that visits people she likes in the story, she comes to the realization that she truly isn’t a loner after all. She has people who care about her, love her, want to protect her and she can count on them for back up. Plus she loves them back and does sweet, thoughtful, helpful and caring things automatically for anyone she can. Her positive vibes and enthusiastic urges to do good deeds are what endeared her to me, but it also made the evil conflict that much more effective, stark and shocking.

This is an actually a sweet romance because any physical aspects of romance between Zoey and Riley were relegated to wishing, hoping and a peck. The sensual does not come from anything Zoey does with her new potential boyfriend, but from the descriptions involving the succubus, Sebastian. He’s a nasty piece of work and because he’s an evil sex demon, there were some descriptions of his kissing and other things with his victims and with Zoey a time or two, but none of it was romantic in the least. The romance between heroine and possible hero is sweet, but for the interactions with the demon they were anything but. He was super creepy.

The book is told in first person point of view and the author did it so well, I was sucked into the story faster than quicksand. Ms. Naquin’s storytelling voice is a winner.

The world building in this novel is stellar and is fascinating. Sight unseen, I’ll be buying the next book in the series because I’m so impressed with Monster in My Closet. If the writing continues to be strong, vibrant, entertaining and effective, and Zoey and Riley’s relationship continues to grow like it seems to hint at, then any book afterwards is a lure I can’t resist. I enjoyed meeting Zoey and her growing paranormal family and highly recommend this to other readers looking for something fresh, easy to read and thoroughly engaging. It’s a winner.

The romance is well written with a different twist on love and family. It shows different aspects of Amish and Christian life and how the two can mix. Now the handsome Dutch-born businessman is making waves with single women all over town—including loony, post mistress Eva May Poole who’s in search of husband number three.

But it’s Kate Clark who’s wreaking havoc with Tappe’s heart, not Eva May. Can he find a way to shake the dingbat post mistress and convince Kate to give him a second chance and the sweet kiss he remembers from an earlier time?

Losing a diamond ring down the drain could put a damper on anyone’s day, but when the plumber turns out to be a former boyfriend who stirs old feelings, the day starts looking brighter! That is, until he sees the ring and decides his former flame is engaged to be married.

Kate is the hardworking, dedicated co-owner of Kate’s Coffee Shop in Little Heron Shores, Florida. Her only living relative, other than her sister Violet, passed away last year leaving Kate and Violet her homestead, which has been in the family for four generations and was their childhood home. Kate loves the old place. It leads to the backwaters and it holds many wonderful memories for Kate, most of which include her childhood friend/boyfriend, Tappe. Violet, however, doesn’t seem to have fond memories of anyone or anything. She wants Kate to sell.

Tappe is recently back from the Netherlands after a failed marriage, and he looks better than ever. He’s living and working at the nearby marina, but he would much rather buy the old homestead that Violet is so keen on selling. The fly in the ointment keeping everyone’s dreams at bay is a girl named Eva May, who you may find yourself laughing at the whole time you’re hating her.

Most of this story has a comfortable flair—friends, love, quirky people, and a hometown with old-fashioned character, but there were a few confusing instances in the story where character traits turned topsy-turvy. For example, Melanie, Kate’s best friend and business partner, has given the reader reason to believe she is hopeful Kate and Tappe might reconnect, yet when Tappe asks to see Kate, Melanie turns into an over-protective grouch and balks at even giving Kate a message from him. Even odder is Kate’s behavior when she shows no interest in even saying hello to Tappe even though their friendship has been rekindled. I was also disappointed to find a few editing errors beginning on the very first page with the word “facet” instead of “faucet.” Most glitches, however, were simply missing or omitted words.

This is a quick, clean read, especially fun around Valentine’s Day given its candy hearts theme. Readers who like romance and old friendships will settle in nicely with this cute story!

Election 2016—The Democratic and Republican parties are holding their conventions in NYC—simultaneously. Illicit campaign money pours through a new underground bank in the city’s newest subway tunnel. But this campaign isn’t about votes—the parties are at war. Santiago and More have uncovered a plot to hijack not just the presidential conventions, but the nation itself. As the feud erupts into open warfare, an embittered veteran turned high-tech warrior, enters the fray. Codenamed ODIN, he is More’s nemesis and they rock the city from the spires of Saint John the Divine to the bowels of the city’s subways. There is no judgment, only survival, for both sinners and saints—underground.

With his cover blown and everything up in the air, Special Agent Everett More is back at the NYPD with Detective Sixto Santiago, much to Santiago’s irritation. So when the presidential election of 2016 heats up and the feud begins, it’s up to More and Santiago to get to the bottom of the corruption coloring the election. But will they be able to set old grievances aside long enough to put things right? Or will their version of New York City fall into an even darker depression?

In this third installment of Adam Dunn’s “More” series, things get even more crazy and convoluted. I wasn’t sure that anything could get more insane than the previous two books, but I underestimated the power of Everett “Ever” More. Now that his cover has been blown, he has no real need to be as secretive as he had before. As over the top as More can be, he’s always intriguing in an ‘oh my god what next’ kind of way. His relationship with Santiago is one of the best parts of this series.

NYPD Detective Sixto “Six” Santiago is both amusing and aggravating. He tends to grouch a lot, but when you consider who he’s partnered with, you begin to understand his constant state of annoyance. But he’s a good guy at heart, trying to better himself and get away from More at all costs. Although their relationship is a bit antagonistic, they work well together, even when More has gone a bit off the deep end. His ability not to strangle his partner is probably his greatest strength.

As ever, Saint Underground is an exhilarating rollercoaster ride of a novel. Once the action starts, it doesn’t stop until the end. It’s obvious that the author has done his research although, at times, he’s done too much. When he gets into describing More’s weapons or any of a handful of other items, he does get a bit carried away. The overly detailed passages tend to disrupt the flow of the story for me, detaching me from the action. However, if you’re more familiar with the kinds of weapons and vehicles that the author’s discussing, it might not be as much of a knee-jerk for you. Full of intrigue and politics, this series might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you like a thriller with political elements then it’s definitely a good choice.

Half-shifter and lead SPAC agent, Val Calhoun, has listened to women gush over the Don Juan of the precinct for the last four years. Yeah, Detective Britton Townsend is hot and has stunning blue eyes, but that foul mouth he saves only for her? What a waste of good looks. And no way does Val want that mouth anywhere near hers.

When the shifter community is threatened, Val is assigned to the case…and fails. So the High Council turns to the rogue shifter they’d sentenced to twenty years as a human – that same obnoxiously sexy Detective Townsend. And sends the two arch-enemies deep into the North Carolina Mountains – together, and alone.

After his shifter abilities are restored, Brit is once again susceptible to the dreaded, irreversible bonding instinct, the Drall. Thankfully, all he’s ever felt for Val is intense loathing, no reason to worry. Right? All he has to do is solve this case pronto, and he can go back to his footloose Casanova ways. That is, if they don’t kill each other first. Or worse… fall in love.

Well, this one was sure different. I enjoyed the unique shifter rules created in this universe that Ms. Niles has created. I liked the different word use for theology references, the hint at uncontrollable passions and a happy-ever-after hard fought and won. I even enjoyed the prickly relationship that Val and Britton initially engaged in.

This novel was full of surprises not the least of which is the real reason why Britt treated Val the way he did. The concept behind it was absolutely fascinating and I respect the twist Ms. Niles threw in when he was exposed to the drugs too many times. That was a nice bit of suspenseful and emotional writing that drew me in and kept me on the edge of my seat.

I thought the external conflict plausible and reprehensible. Takes all kinds to make a world and sometimes the worst villains, even those that claim noble intentions, make for effective skirmishes between characters, personalities and situations. I was quite worried the worst would happen.

I also liked the strength of Val’s feelings for Britton once they blossomed. She really is a heroine because of her actions, her decisions and the way she stood up for Britt and not only defended him like a good police partner should, but as a woman with deeply held beliefs and morals. I was proud of her.

Britton was quite heroic too. He had to make a hard decision and it just about killed him. I felt so bad for him and because the writing was done so well, my feelings were all twisted up in sadness for what Britt was going through. It wasn’t quite a tear jerker but close; it was close.

The one person I wanted to pound some sense into, and who frustrated me the greatest was that super starched up, arrogant, by the rules leader, Mr. “Law is the Law”, Harwood. Grrrrrr, he totally steamed me with his attitude. Ms. Niles created a great character that I would enjoy seeing cut down to size. Val had a better way, an effective way to get through to the stick in the mud leader of the High Council. I don’t think I could have held it together as well as she did.

The Awakening: Britton is a really well written story that kept my interest, engaged my emotions and delivered a passionate and sexy happy ever after conclusion. This is the third book in The Awakening series, and I never read the first two so I can confidently recommend this novel to new readers too as this is a solid standalone read. I enjoyed myself immensely and had a great time. The Awakening: Britton is a must read for paranormal romance readers who are looking for a great romance and a winning story with moments of sheer nail-biting emotional suspense. It’s a worthy read.

Why do dukes fall in love?

Michael, the Duke of Hadlow, has the liberty of enjoying an indiscretion . . . or several. But when it comes time for him to take a proper bride, he ultimately realizes he wants only one woman: Edwina Cheltam. He’d hired her as his secretary, only to quickly discover she was sensuous and intelligent.

They embark on a passionate affair, and when she breaks it off, he accepts her decision as the logical one . . . but only at first. Then he decides to pursue her.

Michael is brilliant, single-minded, and utterly indifferent to being the talk of the ton. It’s even said his only true friend is his dog. Edwina had begged him to marry someone appropriate–—someone aristocratic . . . someone high-born . . . someone else. But the only thing more persuasive than a duke intent on seduction is one who has fallen irrevocably in love.

This historical romance is unconventionally fun and clever. I enjoyed the heroine being hired for a secretarial role long before such things were acceptable; I respected her character’s steadfastness in putting her daughter’s well-being first and her ability to remain calm in the face of a very formidable, grouchy duke. I liked Edwina and Michael’s chemistry, dialogue and spark. Those two were highly engaging characters.

Gertrude, Edwina’s daughter, is a hot ticket. She is adorable and I had no trouble believing in her ability to wrap all the servants as well as the hero around her little pinky. I thought that the natural relationship between her and the duke’s dog, Chester, was a cute touch. Canines and children never put on airs – they are as real as it gets.

I thought it rather clever of the author to start each chapter with a response to the title’s question, “Why do dukes fall in love?” Some of them made me laugh out loud.

The romance that grows between Michael and Edwina was quite well done. I was fascinated in watching Michael actually learn about human interaction by observing Edwina scold, teach or advise her daughter. I also felt sad for the hero because it meant that no one took the time to teach him when he was a young child himself. Did he ever have a childhood? After a while, I got the impression that Edwina and Gertrude were the best things to ever happen to the hero – he is getting a second chance at discovering the many joys of life. Eventually, Michael finds happiness from doing the smallest, nonsensical things and in return is gifted with laughter, smiles and totally illogical love. It was beautiful.

Most of the unconventional aspects of the novel stem from the hero himself. He is emotionally stunted but didn’t have a clue that he was. His personal journey was the strongest plotline in the book. Edwina had her share but the hero is the one who had to change the most. The whole process was captivating to watch.

The hero and heroine do indeed succumb to the passion that was brewing for most of the story and those scenes were well written and romantic.

Why Do Dukes Fall in Love? was a joy to read. Ms. Frampton has penned a story with heart, a wonderful romance and is told with a delightful storytelling voice. Historical romance readers are in for a treat.

Then Cannon meets Lucky in the showers at his gym. The attraction is instantaneous and explodes between them. Are they both interested in more than getting laid?

I really enjoyed this story. I found the author wrote a good balance between seriously hot, descriptive M/M sex and an equally interesting, complex police-based plot. Personally, I found myself enjoying both aspects of the story just as much as each other. Lucky and Cannon were clearly instantly in lust with each other. Despite Cannon not really being out at work, he loves to fuck and has a very healthy sexual life. Readers should be aware that – at least initially – Cannon and Lucky are not monogamous. Cannon has a few no-strings hook ups. I adored how regardless of that, Cannon reluctantly admits to himself that he knows his attraction to Lucky goes more deeply than just getting laid in a mind-blowing manner. And Lucky might have wanted more from Cannon immediately, but his patience really appealed to me. Instead of trying to corner Cannon or manipulate him into a deeper connection, he was willing to tempt his lover instead. This really appealed to me and made for an excellent story. I was satisfied with the Happy For Now ending and a part of me hopes there might even be a sequel or more stories to come with these two interesting and complicated characters.

Similarly, the plot of the book was captivating and well-woven to my mind. I loved the intricacy – the double-plays and sneakiness of how nothing is ever as easy as it seems when it comes to police work. I really commend the author on an amazing job of balancing the intrigue and suspense of Cannon’s work with his anticipation and slow fall from lust into love with his romantic life. These two aspects of the book blend really well and made it a pleasure for me to read.

I found this to be a well-woven, interesting and complicated story with some really steamy sex. I loved both Cannon and Lucky’s characters and would eagerly read more of them both. Recommended.

Will any of them look past their individual struggles to discover the dog’s urgent message and save the child?

It all started because of the dog. Katy has been having bad dreams and she knows in her dream that a big black dog saves her. When her mother almost hits the dog coming home from school, Katy talks to it and wants to adopt it. Her father says no but mom says yes. Since Katy is going away for the weekend, her father puts the dog outside hoping it will move on. Doing that saves Katy’s life…

Ms. Coley writes good solid stories of relationships, expectations, and life and death. The black dog almost has to be a ghost, but it’s a real dog in this story. Somehow she talks you into believing it.

Katy decides to go home instead of going with her girlfriend’s family to the lake. She wants to be with her new dog. When she hears a dog barking, she thinks it might be Moe, so she takes the path to the ravine. When she loses her balance on the wet leaves, she falls. It hurt but she’ll just get back up to the top of the path and go home. No, she won’t. She has a broken leg and can’t move at all. The only one who hears her is the dog.

There’s family trauma all through the neighborhood. Katy’s mother finds out her husband is making a date with one of his students. The veteran in the neighborhood gets mad at his wife and she leaves him. The old couple on the other side are disrupted by the wife’s heart attack. As everyone tries to deal with their problems, no one pays attention to the black dog that tries to get them to follow him.

This is more a tale of relationships and life history than it is the tale of a lost girl. Each situation was unique and they had to work their problems their own way. It isn’t until the weekend is almost over that they realize the child got lost on the way home and is missing.

There were some over-the-top incidents that were a bit unbelievable but they made the story exciting. This story demonstrates that for every action, there’s a reaction. Reading this story made me examine my life. Maybe it will do the same to you.

Like Assassins aren’t just things that occur in the movies and a few short sentences can utterly turn his world upside down. When Marc calls and says Dillon is in danger, Dillon drops everything to run. Meeting Marc in Paris, Dillon discovers nowhere is safe while Julio is determined to kill them both. Can they find safety somewhere? And can Dillon convince Marc to trust him with his heart?

Disengage your brain, grab some cookies and a good drink and relax into this fun and action packed assassin story. I found this lovely story to be part James Bond, part Jason Bourne and part comedy. A few months ago Dillon was just your regular guy. Now he’s running away from deceptively normal looking people who are secretly assassins and trying to kill him and Marc – Dillon’s assassin lover. I realised in the first chapter this was one of those wonderful books where you need to throw logic out the window and leave your brain behind at the door – if my assassin-lover told me to drop everything and run and trust no one, I’d have not then gone and made friends with the little old lady sitting next to me on the train! But just like I don’t want a James Bond film for the intricate plot or deep intelligence, neither would I have found this book half as wonderful had it not been so lighthearted, fun and fast paced.

Despite the fact I realised a little too late this is the second book in a series, the author does an amazing job of catching the reader up on what’s been missed. Dillon and Marc might get together in the first book – but here in the second they’re really exploring their new relationship, bumps and all. Marc – being an assassin – has a few gaps when it comes to Relationships 101, and Dillon sometimes struggles to both understand what Marc means when he says, but also what he leaves unsaid. Marc is a clear “actions speak louder than words” guy, but that doesn’t mean Dillion doesn’t need to hear the words as well. It’s an interesting – and very common – relationship problem and was lovely and realistic to read.

Watching these two men come together, learn about each other and grow together is lovely. I also really enjoyed the plot of how to save themselves from Julio unwound. I felt the pace of the book moved well and I really enjoyed the balance between plot and steamy romance.

A sexy romp of a story, I really enjoyed this book. I’d happily look up any future books and definitely recommend it.
