Desperate times call for devilish measures. When the object of one’s passion has eyes for another…it’s time to take matters in hand!

***

Lady Vesta Chambers is accustomed to getting what she wants…and what she wants is Captain Hewett DeVere…

Coddled and pampered since her mother’s death, Lady Vesta Chambers is beside herself when her father goes to London to prepare for her come-out and returns with a young bride of his own. With her world turned upside down, Vesta accompanies her godmother, Diana, to town where she is smitten the moment she lays eyes on a certain captain of the Seventeenth Light Dragoons.

But when the object of her passion has eyes for another…

Captain Hewett DeVere, younger brother and heir to Viscount Ludovic “The Devil” DeVere, has returned from the American war scarred, disillusioned, and looking forward to settling down to a quiet and respectable life. But when the handsome and straight-laced captain turns his eyes toward the widowed Diana, Vesta is prepared to take devilish measures to prove just how wrong he is.

And the Devil DeVere looks after his own…

Recruiting the aid of her godfather, Vesta vows to prove to Hew once and for all that she is no longer a little girl, but a woman with the passion of…a huntress.

What is one to do when the object of your affection not only doesn’t return your feelings, but has his eyes set on your relative? Trap him and give him no escape, obviously!

Book two in the Devil Devre series starts out with us meeting Vesta, the rather bratty protagonist of the tale and daughter to Sir Edward Chambers, who we met in the first book of the series. Vesta is soon to have her coming out and is upset at her father’s rather unseemly marriage to a young women he barely knew. Here we also meet Diana, Vesta’s godmother who helped raise her after her mother died. Both had hoped that Edward would ask Diana to marry him so they were disappointed when a new wife appears. In order to avoid any awkward situations, Diana decides to take Vesta to London earlier then planned.

Enter Captain Hewett DeVere, younger brother of Viscount Ludovic DeVere, which we also met in book one and had a fairly large role in the marriage of his best friend, Edward. He also happens to be Vesta’s godfather and is asked to keep watch over both women while they stay in London. While Ludovic doesn’t take anything seriously, Hewett takes everything seriously including the safety of his brother’s charges. The brothers share an agreement that Hew would marry and produce an heir so that Vic wouldn’t have to chain himself to a woman and could continue his devilish ways. After meeting Diana, Hew has set his cap on her but little does he know that Vesta has him in her sights.

This book, The Virgin Huntress, was aptly named. The rest of the book shows how a rather clever Vesta plans to trap and steal away Hew and his affection from Diana. We also find out that Diana and Vic share a history that still simmers within them and most of the time becomes explosive when they are in the same room. This chemistry between the two made me very curious about what the past and future held for them.

I admit that I didn’t really care for Vesta at the beginning, but once her plan is in action, my feelings towards her changed and I admired her fiery personality. Hew was lovable from page one, and met my expectations when he finally let himself see the real woman within Vesta. Everyone had a role to play and even the secondary characters, such as the servants, where charming. There were several swoony moments, including when Hew said to Vesta ; ‘“Taken as a whole, my love, you are infinitely greater than the sum of your parts—and everything I didn’t know I needed.” He claimed her mouth now, deeply, passionately.’

All in all, this was a great piece by author Victoria Vane. She had me sighing, fanning myself and laughing out loud. This is not the first book I’ve read by this author and certainly won’t be the last.

The last thing Colleen McLachlan is thinking about while flying over central California in her perky red and yellow Tri-Pacer is a man. After twenty-five years in the US Air Force, she’s ready for freedom and looking for a place to call home. When she’s forced to land in the middle of Matthew Berk’s almond grove, she discovers a home, a family, and a man!

Matt is perfectly happy taking care of the family business and teaching part-time at the local college. When Colleen literally knocks him off his feet, he quickly realizes there’s more to life than work.

Only problem is…there’s a bit of an age difference. Falling in love with Matt Berk goes against everything she stands for. Can she convince Matt she’s wrong for him or will he change her mind?

The older woman meets handsome younger man. Honestly I enjoyed this novel. I like how the author played on something most women have had an issue with – dating younger men, especially women who don’t even like telling their age for fear of being called “old.”

Colleen is so strong and so independent that it’s no wonder she would still be single.  I bet she’s intimidated more than one man!  Add in the fact that she’s a highly ranked ex-military and you understand the issue. But Colleen didn’t count on meeting Matt, who will make her rethink everything she thought she knew. Plus Matt is hot! Even this story couldn’t hide the handsome book nerd who makes Colleen’s pulse race. Throw in some funny family members from both Colleen and Matt’s family and you’ve got a great read.

This story is the epitome of sweet. It’s even sweet enough to allow an older teenager to read. And it’s brutally honest. Most people don’t tell you when you get married that you should like your in-laws and this story covers that as well as what to do with those pre-marital woes and jitters.

Lady Amias has a bad temper. She’s been rejected by four husbands already and Stryker Bloodaxe could be her last chance to escape spinsterhood. Unfortunately he has the civility and refinement of a randy bull, and his remote manor on the wild, Cornish moor never housed a female unless she was a servant or a whore.

Amias knows Stryker doesn’t want a wife, but he needs her bride purse and he’s just desperate enough to take her on, reputation and all. Whatever is required to claim the haughty lady’s dowry, this ruthless warrior will do it.

Except one thing.

He’ll never give his heart.

Undaunted, Amias strikes a bargain with her barbarian. After all, he has other parts to share, even if his heart is out of bounds. He may think he’s unlovable, his manor uninhabitable for a lady, but she hasn’t earned the name “Ami the Unbreakable” for nothing.

Why deny it? I’m addicted to Georgia Fox’s Conqueror series. The Barbarian, her latest release, does not disappoint.

Reminiscent of the Taming of the Shrew in some ways, The Barbarian turned out to be an excellent read. I swept through the 120 page novella in just a few hours, liking both brutish Stryker and “Ami the Unbreakable“. Although, I must admit that at first my feelings toward the hero were conflicted, see-sawing between both hate and love. After all, submitting the heroine to cunnilingus while being watched by another man is not very gentlemanly! Then there was the fact that he did come off as brutish and a bit dumb but as the story progressed I easily felt myself falling for his charm, for as he himself says: “[…] however rough his manners, Stryker was not stupid. His wisdom was merely of a different kind to the sort she recognized.”

The plot of this story is not complicated. The love between Amias and Stryker happens fast, but Ms. Fox has a way with words that makes it believable that two such opposing characters could fall for each other so quickly and not sound fake or forced. As usual, the erotic scenes were first rate. Unlike other stories where the characters might have tried out different things such as toys or ménages, here, the love scenes turned out to be both tender and hot. It was easy to feel the chemistry between the barbarian and the lady form the start.

However, the only thing that puzzled me and left me a bit disgruntled was the two contemporary chapters at the beginning and at the end of the novel. Set apart from the bulk of The Barbarian, they felt like a message from the author, though to me it was not clear if it was a farewell or simply her way to tell us that there was really no end to her stories.

That aside, The Barbarian is a fun read for anyone with a passion for short, quick historical romances.

Once burned twice shy… but when old flames come together…passion reignites…

When burned once… Arriving in London as her goddaughter’s chaperone, Baroness Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley wants to avoid her erstwhile lover at all costs.

Once nearly consumed by passion, four years has reduced the former inferno to bitterness and ashes.

By an old flame… A world-weary master of seduction, Ludovic “The Devil” DeVere is bored with his chosen life of debauchery.

When Diana’s charge disappears, she is forced to seek help from the devil’s lair, and their mutual desire reignites with undeniable ferocity.

Fire is best fought with fire… While DeVere is hell-bent to have her back for keeps, Diana is equally determined to bring him to his knees…by acquiring some sensual secrets of her own.

The Devil’s Match starts off right were book two in the series leaves off. This book finds the very sexy and deviant Viscount Ludovic DeVere pining over the only woman he’s never grown tired of. While dealing with the marriage of his beloved brother to his goddaughter and the fury of his best friend, Vic struggles to manage his growing feelings for his prickly former lover, Baroness Diana. Diana must face the man who open her eyes and heart to the wicked world of sexual delight, when she’d rather never see the man again. Filled with bitterness towards him for his dismissal of her four years prior, she fends off his advances and spars with him verbal for most of the book.

Again in the second half of Diana and Vic’s love story, their passion fuels several arguments that leaves readers amused and rooting for them to be together. No matter how hard she tried, even Diana feel victim to Vic’s devilish charms. He was just so wicked, saying things like, “Say it, Diana. I love hearing vulgar words from your lovely lips.”. Once they let their walls down and embrace their true feelings, I was reaching for the tissues at the end of the book.

Author Victoria Vane does an excellent job of showing Vic’s heart of gold that lies deep, deep under the layers of his outlandish attitude and Diana’s warmth that lies beneath her many frosty layers. This couple and their story far surpasses the others in the series, and needed the two books to really show how deep their love was and how it triumphed over all else. On top of this, the book was well written, witty, sexy, funny and historically correct. Ms. Vane has now been put on this historical lover’s must buy list, and I advise you all do the same!

Jared feels like he’s the only one who looks past Sophie’s scars to see her for who she is. But can he be a true friend when she desperately needs one?

Jared is smitten when his teacher seats the new girl, Sophie, right next to him. Even with the scar running up the side of her face, Jared thinks she’s the most beautiful girl in the entire fifth grade. But why did she transfer here so late in the year? Rumors say something bad happened to her.

Jared and Sophie become friends while walking the guidance counselor’s new puppy, but when his parents object to this arrangement, Jared fabricates a series of elaborate lies to meet Sophie on the sly. But little brothers can be pests. First Petey lets the orange cat loose at the animal shelter where Jared and Sophie have been secretly walking the dogs. Then Petey turns up missing.

And Sophie’s past finally catches up with her.

Sometimes the past cannot stay buried.

It can difficult to know how to broach the topic of child abuse with elementary school aged students. Too much information can be unnecessarily frightening for those who don’t have personal experience with it as well as potentially triggering for those have been the victims of it. As Jared slowly learns what happened to Sophie I held my breath. Would Ms. Benson include so many details of the abuse Sophie endures that I’d feel obligated to raise the age recommendation?

I shouldn’t have worried. We learn enough about Sophie’s past experiences to explain her current fears but none of the stories she shares are inappropriate for this age range. What surprised me the most was how quickly Sophie adapts to life in a new town with the help of a compassionate boy named Jared. The abuse will always be part of her past but Sophie’s identity as a daughter, friend, animal-lover and student is in no way limited to the bad things that have happened to her.

My only concern with this book involves how much responsibility for looking after his little brother Jared experiences. Their parents are described as unusually involved in the boys’ lives yet Jared is expected to shoulder an unfair amount of the work that comes with keeping a rambunctious 8-year-old safe. It would have made more sense for Mr. and Mrs. Westin to either be equally protective of both of their sons or expect Pete to be a little less impulsive. As it stands Jared is given a nearly adult level of responsibility for the care of his sibling and yet has the personal freedom of someone much younger.

Walking the Dog is one of those rare stories that appeals as much to adult readers as it will to its intended audience. I’d especially recommend reading it aloud if you live with someone who is about Jared and Sophie’s age. It’s the sort of tale that becomes even more exciting when two or more people are hearing it for the first time together.

I am often asked from where story ideas originate. For this particular book, Where Bluebirds Fly, I happen to remember.

One wintry afternoon I was driving home from work, listening to NPR, and they said the word Synesthesia.

Being a connoisseur of the weird and wonderful, I was immediately intrigued; I had never heard of this particular disorder of perception.

In one common form of synesthesia, known as grapheme → color synesthesia or color-graphemic synesthesia, letters or numbers are perceived as inherently colored, while in ordinal linguistic personification, numbers, days of the week and months of the year evoke personalities. In spatial-sequence, or number form synesthesia, numbers, months of the year, and/or days of the week elicit precise locations in space (for example, 1980 may be “farther away” than 1990), or may have a (three-dimensional) view of a year as a map (clockwise or counterclockwise). Yet another recently identified type, visual motion → sound synesthesia, involves hearing sounds in response to visual motion and flicker. Over 60 types of synesthesia have been reported, but only a fraction have been evaluated by scientific research. Even within one type, synesthetic perceptions vary in intensity and people vary in awareness of their synesthetic perceptions.” ~ Wikipedia

So, like any geek, I joined a cognitive neuroscience board, to go in search of synesthesates.

Within a day, several contacted me, each with an individual type of synesthesia. Some people tasted shapes, so let’s say they taste chicken soup~immediately the feeling of a circle might appear as if they hold it in their hand.

For others, peoples’ names elicit a specific taste. Others saw days in different colors, or letters with specific colors. There was a blurring of the senses, experiencing the senses in two unique, simultaneous ways.

My conversations with them were fascinating. I tucked away the idea, waiting for the story fairy to arrive. And arrive she did.

Fast forward a few months later, I towed my husband on another history trip, this time to Salem. As we heard the stories of lives lost, people wrongly accused for witchcraft, it hit me.

What if someone with Synesthesia lived during the time of the trials? What would happen?

Very, very bad things was the answer.

Salemites were a superstitious lot; I heard stories of suspicion of outsiders. Of how red hair was considered ominous or if one stuttered while reciting the Lord’s Prayer, one might be condemned as a witch.

A chill rushed down my arms, standing them on end. In my work with children, stuttering was a very common occurrence. I pictured those innocent faces…and my stomach turned.

Thus was born, Where Bluebirds Fly.

Some sounds you cannot forget.

They stay with you always, becoming part of you. They are as familiar as the creases lining your palms.

Some say what the eyes see, imbeds forever in our memories.

But sounds fill my head, late in the night, in my mourning hours-three refuse to die.

The sound of my mother’s laugh. Low and resonant, like the church bell’s peal on Sunday morn. To think on it too much would call madness into my soul. How that voice could lift me out of the blackness in my head and heart, threatening now to snuff the dwindling light of my hope.

The sound of my mother’s screaming. It follows me down the path to sleep. Stays with me. My mother’s hair, in blond waves, hangs loose from the Indian’s pouch alongside my father’s black and white locks. The gurgling, drowning sound in her throat tells me she’s going, where I cannot follow.

The crunching snap of Goody Bishop’s neck on the gallows’ noose. The first to die under the charges of witchcraft.

There is one thing wrong, historically about my post here. If you’ve read about the trials, perhaps you can spot it. The person who does will win an electronic copy as well as an Amazon gift card. And if no one knows, I will randomly pick the winner and tell you the answer!!!

Everyone’s heard of Becca Wiley’s kickass inking skills, including the Master at a local BDSM club. He wants her to ink his subs with ultraviolet possession tattoos in exchange for enough money to pay her mortgage for six months—if she can pass an audition. All she needs is a human canvas.

For Chad Harrington, the last few weeks haven’t been a barrel of fun where his friends-only relationship with Becca is concerned. He’s ready for more, and what better way to say “I’m your man” than by offering a fresh patch of flesh for her audition, while safeguarding her from any other plans the Master may have in store?

Becca is shocked by her response to the eroticism at the club, but not as much as her reaction to Chad’s unexpected kiss and bold, scorching caresses. In less time than he can say “on your knees”, she learns what she’s been missing. And knows she wants more.

When two friends decide the time is right for more than just jovial banter will fireworks explode?

Becca is one seriously talented tattoo artist. Her skills are widely sought after and adored by many. She also has one serious crush on her hot friend, Chad. To say that she’d like a bit of bedroom action with him is putting it mildly.  She’s desperate for it.

But does he feel the same? It takes an invitation to a BDSM club to create some ultraviolet possession tattoos that finally gives the couple the kick up the butt they need to get it on, and in the mean time, get themselves tangled in a weirdly messed up master and his harem of slaves, a situation that borders on just-damn-dangerous.

It took me a while to get into Deeper Than Ink. The cover hooked me initially, its gorgeous – I love the guy’s smile – but there seemed to be a lot ‘telling’ while I learnt about Becca’s background and skills and her relationship with Chad. But when the couple finally admitted their feelings for each other, boy did it have my attention in a big way. The well-crafted sex scene was long and indulgent and I certainly could see why Becca had the hots for Chad, there was something very real about him, both vulnerable and masterful, it was a delicious combination. The dynamics in their relationship was page-turning.

The secondary story, about the BDSM club, didn’t grab me as much as the Becca/Chad part of the novel. It kind of simmered away; the characters, while nicely described, didn’t draw me into their world, and the ending to their ordeal was a bit fast considering how well the tension had been built. I would have enjoyed a little more good guy/bad guy action at that moment, then the resolution.

In summary Ms Ellis has certainly written a good addition to the ‘Pricked’ line that Ellora’s Cave offers. The characters are very likeable and real, the hero in particular is adorable, there were a few moments I was definitely jealous of Becca! The book is a nice length, enough to get your teeth into and if you like a little mild BDSM and a touch of mystery mixed into a sweet erotic romance the Deeper Than Ink is a book for you.

About to be burned at the stake by her fellow villagers, Odaria does what any betrayed witch facing certain death would do. She calls down a curse. Within seconds, rampaging Norsemen raid the village, capturing everyone except her.

But her reprieve is short-lived, and Odaria lands in the clutches of the Norse leader Rothgar. Can she remain true to herself and fight her growing attraction to this domineering man, or will she fall under his influence and be used for his ambitions?

After Rothgar witnesses Odaria’s powers firsthand, he strikes a bargain with her. The raven-haired beauty will use her magical abilities to help him with his quest in exchange for safe passage off the isle. But can this cunning woman be trusted, or is she using him to exact vengeance on her village?

Together they must fight bloodthirsty villagers, battle a mutinous band of Norsemen, find a missing Norse ship, and learn to trust each other . . . before time is up.

Can Odaria really trust a Viking?

Odaria has never been able to trust a single soul on her small isle. Though she lives as an outcast, her life is relatively peaceful until the village leader, Brennan decides the village needs to be “cleansed” of Odaria’s witchcraft by burning her alive. When Odaria calls down a curse on the village, she didn’t expect a band of Norsemen to come charging out of the shadows, but will the brutal raiders be her savior or her downfall?

Odaria is a very brave and strong woman. She has lived her entire life on the isle where she was. Since her mother’s death, she has been alone in the world, with the other villagers only coming to her in secret when they need her magic to help them. With the way Odaria is treated by the others, I couldn’t believe she had never attempted to leave the isle. However, Odaria is far too stubborn to admit defeat, even when it becomes clear she’s in grave danger.

When Rothgar enters Odaria’s life, she feels an immediate connection to him. The attraction is mutual, and it isn’t long before the sparks start to fly. However, Odaria and Rothgar are both very strong willed, and are constantly bickering and butting heads. Despite their intense fights, Odaria and Rothgar also share some moments where they both open up about some very personal and private details of their lives. Their vulnerability is quite touching.

Ms. Wilkins also did an excellent job of building the sexual tension between Odaria and Rothgar. Though they were certainly attracted to each other physically from the moment they met, they weren’t able to act on it right away. I found the interruptions to their romantic interludes very amusing at times. Consequently, Odaria and Rothgar were able to form a strong emotional attachment. When Odaria and Rothgar were finally able to act on their feelings for each other, the timing felt perfect.

I do have to say that the conflict between Odaria and Rothgar at the climax of the book didn’t feel entirely genuine. I can’t say much without spoiling the plot. However, I will say that Odaria is led to believe something terrible about Rothgar. I find it very hard to believe that Odaria would lose faith in Rothgar so quickly after they had shared some very intense, personal, and private moments.

Still, Ms. Wilkins did a great job of depicting the brutality of the time period. Both the Vikings and the Picts had very cruel ways of dealing with enemies that made me shudder, and I am very grateful that I have never witnessed such violence first hand. I do wish there had been a bit more depth to Brennan, the main villain in the story. Brennan simply comes across as an evil man misusing religion for his own purposes. I can’t help but wonder about the deeper motives behind his actions and what drove him down the path he was on in the first place.

Overall, I enjoyed reading The Viking’s Witch. Odaria and Rothgar are entertaining characters and their romance is beautifully written. Fans of spicy historical romance should certainly give The Viking’s Witch a try.

Daniel is wearing Randall’s costume and is in Emily’s sites from the get go. The erotic dance that comes next will have you blazing finger trails on your e-reader and writing down this author’s name for future amazing stories. The lusty romp through the woods and the surprises that await the eager lovers are worth waiting for.

There wasn’t a thing about the book that I didn’t like except maybe a little spanking here or there as a party favor would have been fun. This book leaned more toward general erotica but it did have some light BDSM overtones. The dialog was good, the action moved you along fast and the sexual tension was delicious.

When dealing with the devil, it’s easy to be burned…especially when passion ignites the flames.

Who can find a virtuous woman… Beautiful, respectable, and dutiful, Lady Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley, has long resigned herself to her twelve-year loveless and childless marriage to a feckless husband…until his gambling pushes them to the brink of financial ruin.

Sometimes the devil is in disguise…as a gentleman… Viscount Ludovic, “The Devil DeVere,” is a man accustomed to taking what he wants, according to his whim and heedless of the cost…until he encounters a woman who won’t be had at any price.

When dealing with the devil, it’s easy to be burned… When Diana discovers a secret that shatters the carefully built façade concealing her private pain, she seeks aid and comfort from the most unlikely place…the devil’s arms. But will a single night of heavenly passion damn them both forever?

What’s that age old saying? Better the Devil you know then the Devil you don’t?

This book is number three in the Devil DeVere series but actually takes place four years before book one. The Devil You Know opens 15 years before the events of book one and two and shows the hero in the tale, Viscount Ludovic DeVere being cast aside for a peer of the ton with a higher ranking by the woman he intended to marry. We soon learn that this event shapes Vic into the Devil we know.

Barroness Diana has come to see a horse race with her husband and family. We quickly learn that Diana is in not only a loveless marriage, but one filled with lies and secrets. When she finds out that her husband has left them in dire straits, she must make a deal with the Devil himself.

From the first meeting between Vic and Diana, their chemistry sets the page on fire. Her response says it all; “Without having uttered a word beyond her name, the portentous weight of an indecent proposition hung between them.” The interchange between the two is delightful while he struggles with disposing of an unwanted guest and she struggles with her desires and how they affect her vows.

While Vic makes his desire known, Diana is determined to remain faithful to her marriage all the while fighting her curiosity for this devilish man. She over hears two rather interesting conversations which lead her down a path she never expected to go, and is far more sensual and erotic then she ever imagined.

This book was an interesting read for me. We learn a little bit about what makes the devil the way he is, and we see the passion that is hinted in the previous book. Edward, from the previous books, and he now dead wife are supportive players while Vic and Diana’s husband play the villains. I really enjoyed the banter between the two protagonists, and the gossiping between the women. However, this book does not have a happy ending or even a happy for now ending, it is essentially part one of a two parts within the series itself.

In all, Ms. Vane has written another gem that has left readers, and myself, wagging our tongues waiting for the conclusion to the epic love story that is Vic and Diana in The Devil’s Match. In that, I have no doubt.
