“It still amazes me how little we really knew. . . . Maybe everything that happened to me and my family had nothing at all to do with the slowing. It’s possible, I guess. But I doubt it. I doubt it very much.”

On a seemingly ordinary Saturday in a California suburb, Julia and her family awake to discover, along with the rest of the world, that the rotation of the earth has suddenly begun to slow. The days and nights grow longer and longer, gravity is affected, the environment is thrown into disarray. Yet as she struggles to navigate an ever-shifting landscape, Julia is also coping with the normal disasters of everyday life—the fissures in her parents’ marriage, the loss of old friends, the hopeful anguish of first love, the bizarre behavior of her grandfather who, convinced of a government conspiracy, spends his days obsessively cataloging his possessions. As Julia adjusts to the new normal, the slowing inexorably continues.

The Age of Miracles is a story that grabs you from chapter one and has you in its hold until the very last word. It’s told in the first person from the viewpoint of Julia, an eleven year old girl who is not only dealing with growing into a young woman and all the problems that come with it, but also the breakdown of her parent’s once idyllic marriage.

These dilemmas in themselves make for a wonderful read, but this story is more than just a coming of age novel because these two problems are interwoven with yet a bigger one. It quickly becomes a sci-fi novel about what happens to us, society, and the world when the earth slows.

Ms. Thompson Walker did a wonderful job showing us what would happen if the days and nights grew longer. Not only its impact on the environment but relationships with one another, neighbors, and society as a whole.

Each character is well crafted and overall this makes for a very compelling read. Although it’s listed as a young adult novel, (and I know lots of young adults will love it), don’t let the listing put you off reading it if you’re an adult, or at least borrowing it from your offspring. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Meet Dante, Demon of Seduction
By
Kathy Kulig
Thanks for inviting me here today to talk about my bad boy hero Dante in my latest release Damned and Defiant from Ellora’s Cave. And thanks to the readers for taking the time to check out my books. Readers rock!

Dante Akanto is a character in all three books: Desert of the Damned, Damned and Desired, and Damned and Defiant. He plays quite a unique part in all three books. He’s a hunky immortal demon with the power to draw lifeforce energy from mortals through sexual encounters. He must do this for the survival of his life and his world Anartia. Unlike some demons on Anartia, he wasn’t always an immortal creature. He was assimilated by the demoness Gwyllain and her consort and lover Tarik to be their Drone and servant. In exchange for Dante’s loyalty and services, he was given immortality. The choice was a no-brainer because a senior Drone approached him while Dante was near death.

Dante lived during the Gold Rush days in the 1800s, he had a gold claim, he had a ranch and horses. Someone wanted all that he had. Dante was betrayed and shot and lay dying in the desert when another Drone rescued him. If he hadn’t accepted the demoness’s offer, he would’ve died.

While Drones collect their lifeforce energy, they cannot indulge in orgasms. To do so will drain the energy they collected and possibly drain all the energy from their current prey to the point of death. For this reason, Drones are forbidden to get personal with mortals. Dante breaks that rule when he meets Haley.

He knows she’s running from her past. Something frightened her enough to leave everything behind except a backpack and hike across country but he doesn’t know what. He’s attracted to her vulnerability, courage and beauty. Besides her quirkiness, she’s a Sha Warrior with powers she doesn’t even know she possesses. And another demon wants to use her for his own benefit. To protect Haley, Dante has to betray his own kind and risk destroying his world.

Mortal women surrender to Dante’s seductions. He is a Drone, an immortal who feeds off their lifeforce energy—the chi that keeps his kind alive. When his dimension is on the edge of destruction, Dante must seek the help of one special woman.

Haley Moore is a Sha Warrior—a mortal with excess lifeforce energy. She has always had a strong attraction to Dante and when they meet again he thinks luck is on his side because his quota of chi energy would be obtained after one scorching scene with this mortal. But the problem is that he is overwhelmingly attracted to her and once with this woman won’t be enough.

Haley tries to draw out the man buried deep within the demon. Their fierce, undeniable passion unravels his plans and threatens her life. Can Dante bear to abandon her when he leaves Earth forever? Dante will have to choose whether to return to his world or to give up his immortality and share his future with Haley.

Knocking off a drug kingpin was the last thing on Maggie Lee’s to-do list, but when a tragic accident leaves her beloved niece orphaned and in the hospital, Maggie will go to desperate lengths to land the money needed for her care.

But the drug kingpin is the least of her worries. Maggie’s aunts are driving her crazy, her best friend’s turned into a bridezilla…and a knock on the head has given Maggie Dr. Dolittle abilities—she can talk to animals. Unfortunately, they talk back.

It’s just another day in the life of this neurotic hitwoman…

She really didn’t want to play “hitwoman” again, but she also really needed more money. Not just for her niece’s hospital care, but to fight a long-lost aunt who wants to adopt Katie and take her to Vegas. So when Maggie goes out for chocolate pudding with the mob boss and he asks her to take out an opponent, she tells him she’ll think about it.

Ms. Lynn’s first book was a joy to read and I’m very happy to have had the opportunity to read this sequel. The stories are busy, full of laughs, and always leave me wondering what will happen next.

The author has made Maggie one unique individual. Since a head injury during a car accident, she can now hear animals talk. God (Godzilla) is a lizard, who is pretty smart and pretty smug, likes to give her advice. Doomsday is a Doberman who is really a big sweetie but puts people off by her size. Her favorite statement is: “Gotta! Gotta!” You can guess gotta what.

If the animals weren’t enough, she now has three romantic interests. None of them are quite right for her. One is a cop who appears to have some excess baggage; one is man who’s already married twice; and one is an old crush from school she thought was gay. Watching her balance relationships and worrying about her feelings for all three is fun. She’s not sure what she wants or who with; they all have their attractions. Thank goodness one of them is an expert killer and can offer her advice on how to take out her assigned hit.

Ms. Lynn always amazes me with her ideas. For example, did the animals expedite her hit or didn’t they? Did someone else help her? We don’t know, but we can sure imagine. That’s part of why these books are such fun to read. They aren’t boring, they aren’t typical, and the murders are almost an accident.

Oh, I forgot to mention the three crazy aunts Maggie has. They’re all unusual, have quirks most people don’t, and they love Maggie. Sometimes that’s a problem. Haven’t you had relatives like that?

Why not grab both books and sit down and follow Maggie along on her adventures. You’ll laugh at loud, moan at some of the antics, sigh over some of the relatives and when you finish you’ll have a smile on your face. Ms. Lynn writes stories that flow well, make you care about her characters, and make you want to read more. It’s a winning combination for a book.

Legal secretary, Olivia Warner enjoys being single and, aside from her closest gal pals, usually keeps to herself. But the night of her thirty-fourth birthday, she and her friends spend a fun-filled evening at a local bar where her friends dare her to approach a man, and spend the night with him.

Olivia’s not one to turn down a dare, especially from her old college pals. She only hopes the man in question is in for some good conversation, because that’s all she’ll give him.

Darren “Dare” Shalvis has given up on women. He’s tired of being chased for his money, good looks, and prowess in bed. He prefers to meet a woman who, for once, wants nothing more from him than mere conversation. If only the woman asking him to spend the night with her wasn’t his favorite legal secretary.

Accepting a dare has never been so tempting…

I’m hooked. It’s been less than 24 hours and I’ve read Dare by Kacey Hammell twice already. After reading it the first time, I just couldn’t get characters Darren and Olivia out of my head. In little more than 60 pages, Ms. Hammell managed to create a devilishly hot, fun, alluring story.

Although at first glance Dare might seem like your typical romance novel (quiet girl meets rich hunk), it’s not. The reason for this is the way Ms. Hammell depicts her characters. Both Olivia and Darren come off as real people. As a single woman, I could identify with Olivia’s lack of interest in the dating scene but also her desire to find the right man. Darren was hot, but he was also hard working and invested. Furthermore, I loved the way the author takes us step by step into his thoughts and reveals how he is falling for the pretty secretary about whom he had been fantasizing.

It’s true that the character’s fall in love fast, but it is a short story and the passion between Olivia and Dare is so intense that it makes up for it. Besides, the author’s description set an image of such natural ease between them that I felt from the beginning that they were perfect for each other.

Furthermore, behind the hot sex Kacey Hammell throws in a mystery, which surprisingly comes to play an important role in the development of the characters’ relationship.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that I really liked the fact that Ms. Hammell worried about her character’s health record and condom usage, something sometimes rare in romance novels. This did not detract from the story one bit, but rather added another layer of reality to the whole plot.

Dare was a quick, extremely enjoyable read for any moment of the day, if you dare get hot and bothered at any time.

Spinster librarian Laura Melbourne is in danger. She’s the only witness to the murder of a senator, and the assassin is hunting her. Desperate to flee, she agrees to become a mail-order bride.

The last thing Nathan Cantrell wants is a new wife, especially one with secrets. What he needs is someone on his Colorado farm to help care for his daughter, a child who has limited contact with the world around her. For his daughter’s sake, he advertises for a mail-order bride.

Nathan is surprised to find himself tempted by Laura, but her ability to care for his daughter prevents him from sending her packing. Soon their marriage is more than one in name only, but the secret from her past threatens not only their tentative union, but their very lives.

Mail order brides had all kinds of reasons for going west to wed an unknown man; but Laura Melbourne has one of the best reasons—to stay alive.

Laura has survived miserable conditions growing up, but she has no self-pity. She has determination. An industrious, intelligent, thirty-year-old spinster, Laura takes her friend’s advice and with careful planning believes she has escaped a killer, even if she did have to marry a man who has no intentions of falling in love with her.

At his wits end as to how to take care of his precious daughter Rachel, Nathan Cantrell takes the advice of his friend Micah and orders a bride. He doesn’t want a wife. His first wife had pretty much bankrupted him and made him the laughingstock of the community with her promiscuous ways. Her cruelty to their child is crushing to him. Laura was not what he expects and he wants to ship her back east but she doesn’t want to go—a deal is a deal.

Little Rachel reaches out and grabs one’s heart. Her despair and isolation are heartbreaking. As she inch by inch improves, one wants to cheer her on. Her survival tactics amaze.

The secondary characters like the widow Sarah and her children, the mercantile owner Jenkins, and Micah bring winsome personalities to the story and give the reader a close look at true friendship. They add depth and meaning to Rachel, Laura, and Nathan’s making a life together. “Once burned, twice shy” really fits Nathan and Rachel, but Laura, bit by piece, gains their trust. Her unstinting generosity and ability to cope bring about profound changes.

Nigel Blackwood, attaché to the British Embassy, is a power hungry killer. When his henchman Otis fails to find Laura, he does away with him and pursues the one person who can destroy him. He wants the power promised him, but more than that, he wants to save his own life. Consequently, he searches relentlessly for the eyewitness that seems to have vanished.

The climax of Cantrell’s Bride reveals the length a person will go to in order to save loved ones as well as showing friends that prove tried and true when the going get rough.

Suzanne Ferrell takes an often-used bit of old west history along with ordinary, predictable events and creates a delightful character-driven story that catches the attention and propels one along from a quiet library in Washington, D. C. to the obscure farm of a struggling father in Colorado. The tension, humor, and ordinary doings of life make Cantrell’s Bride engaging. It is a story that reaffirms that the indomitable human spirit can meet and beat fears and hardships of life to find a happy-ever-after.

Trauma surgeon Dr. Dallas Olson is too busy to date. Signing up with Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand service seems like a good plan, but his plans are sidelined when he’s nearly killed by a wolf attack. While still recovering and dealing with unexplainable side effects, he nevertheless agrees to meet the woman Madame Eve found for him.

Looking forward to her 1Night Stand date, werewolf shifter Cara Johnson is disappointed when it’s canceled unexpectedly. When Madame Eve lets her know that the man she should have met has suffered a wolf attack, Cara fears he’ll become a rogue werewolf himself during the next full moon. Unless she finds him and brings him home to her pack before that happens, her Alpha will have no choice but to kill him.

With only days left before the full moon, Cara and Dallas meet. He thinks it’s a one-night stand. She thinks it’s a mission to save his life. Madame Eve has other ideas.

A brilliant doctor searching for his true love. Sounds like the perfect catch, and he was – until he was attacked.

Dallas Olson was an ambitious young doctor in charge of the trauma ward of his hospital. His divorce several years earlier left him leery of dating coworkers, and since he works every waking moment, it leaves little time for romance. That’s where Madame Eve comes in. He was thrilled when he finally received word of his pending date, but an altercation with a band of wolves altered his plans.

Cara Johnson is the gorgeous offspring of a human mother and werewolf father. Her work in accounting keeps her busy and the pack on their feet, but she’s regrettably alone. After all her siblings happily find their mates through Madame Eve’s service, she decides to give it a shot and signs up herself. When her date is inexplicably canceled, however, she fears she’s made a terrible mistake.

That’s when she’s given an assignment. She finds out her date has been attacked by rogue wolves and she needs to bring him into the pack before he changes with the full moon. They meet, and the fireworks ensue…

This was a hot, quick read. The pure animal attraction – quite literally – between Cara and Dallas was steaming. I had never read a werewolf tale before, and although some of the terms were a bit foreign to me, I was able to piece together what was happening by context and didn’t get lost. The writing was very vivid, and the scenes came alive, despite the short duration.

There wasn’t much in the way of character development, but what was included was appropriate for this particular story. The only thing I felt was missing was the reason for the jump from one night stand/casual hook up to mating (presumably for life). I felt a little sorry for the doctor, who didn’t seem to have any options, but he did seem happy where he ended, so the happily ever after was satisfying enough to enjoy.

If you like a steamy hookup, even if you aren’t a typical paranormal fan, this is definitely one to read!

Zoe is thrilled when she lands her first paying case until she learns she’ll be going undercover at a local blood bank. The fact that she faints at the sight of blood makes working there more than difficult. Who would steal blood and what would they do with it? Is her creepy vampire-like coworker using it in a cult ritual?

When Zoe learns that Nate will be working undercover with her, she’s overjoyed. She soon finds that the gorgeous Rikki’s attraction to Nate is too distracting and considers throwing him off the case. Zoe questions his loyalty even as Nate proclaims that she’s the only girl for him.

Nothing is as it seems and Zoe has no clue who can be trusted. Who’s stealing the blood? Is it the director? The vampire-like guy with the fangs who wears all black? Or, her gorgeous co-worker who has a thing for Nate?

Can Zoe really be objective where Nate is concerned?

Zoe is thrilled to have her first official case until she finds out she’ll be facing one of her worst fears: blood. On top of that, Rikki, one of Zoe’s prime suspects, flirts shamelessly with Nate. Nate doesn’t think Rikki is guilty. However, Zoe is sure Rikki is up to no good, but is her judgment clouded by jealousy? Can Zoe overcome her fear and remain objective long enough to solve the case before someone gets hurt?

I truly enjoyed getting to know Zoe in the first book and reading the second installment was like visiting an old friend. Zoe is still the same spirited girl who dreams of being a detective. With her grandpa opening a detective agency, Zoe is one step closer to making that dream a reality. Zoe knows she’ll have to work hard to build up a reputation, and I admire the fact that she perseveres with her investigation at the blood bank even though she is terrified of blood. She’s one tough cookie. Zoe also takes a few more risks this time around, which I imagine is a necessary step forward in her chosen career. However, there is one time in particular when Zoe took a serious risk that had me shaking my head and racing through the pages wondering what would happen next.

Zoe and Nate’s relationship continues to blossom in this story, but the road they travel has a few bumps. Zoe’s jealousy of Rikki is completely understandable and makes her an even more realistic character. Zoe isn’t afraid to call Nate out when he’s made a mistake, but sometimes she comes off a bit harsh. However, Zoe is also mature enough to realize when she’s being unreasonable. Nate is more than a match for Zoe’s strong personality. He listens to what she has to say, but I like the fact that he stands up for himself as well. The honest communication between Zoe and Nate keeps their relationship free of misunderstandings.

I truly pity Zoe where her parents are concerned. Her father seems like a nice man, but her mother is a snob in the truest sense of the word. Zoe’s mother strongly disapproves of Zoe’s relationship with Nate and makes it clear she doesn’t think Nate is good enough. This leads to a brief, intense, and heartbreaking confrontation between Zoe and her mother. It would be easy for Zoe to simply acquiesce to her mother’s demands, but Zoe is nineteen and more than capable of making her own decisions. Zoe demonstrates amazing strength of character when she stands up to her mother without disrespecting her. She’s certainly a young woman of admirable principles.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Case of Fatal Attraction. While this is the second book in the Zoe Mack series, it is a gripping romantic suspense that can stand on its own. I’m definitely looking forward to solving more mysteries with Zoe in the future.

From This Day Forward
Christian Music agent Kellen Rossiter has everything he ever wanted: A-list clients from coast to coast, a loving wife who honors and respects him, and a faith life that’s never wavered—until now.

Juliet Rossiter has the perfect life: a rewarding schedule serving the underprivileged, a husband who loves her as Christ loved the church, and a blessed future as a mother—at least that’s what she thinks.

For Better or Worse
But what happens when their rock-solid marriage begins to crumble under the weight of an unexpected and powerful temptation? How does love survive when its foundation is shaken?

‘Til Death Do Us Part
When human frailty and the allure of sin deal a harsh blow to their relationship, it will take more than love to mend the shattered trust and heartbreak. It will take a lifetime of devotion.

Temptation hits what seemed to be a solid, Christian marriage…can they keep it together?

When a music agent has feelings for a young woman who isn’t his wife, and when he gives in enough to kiss her–a kiss that is observed and eventually gets back to his wife–what next?

Marianne Evans writes a book with a wonderful message of forgiveness.  This couple has a difficult path ahead, because a broken trust is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to overcome.   She takes us step-by-step as they try to work things out and rebuild their marriage. As they try to learn to trust again.

There’s another sticking point, as well.  I think the world feels Christians should be infallible.  I think Christians often feel that way as well.  So these two have to get past that; they must acknowledge they are human and sometimes make bad choices.

The author does a fine job of showing the reality of their lives after this happens.  Though the story does have its slow spots, it’s still uplifting, believable and not preachy.  It’s something that couples should read when they think their relationships are past saving.

For a book with a real message that will leave you filled with hope, I recommend Devotion.  It’s so very worth reading.

When an insecure, bi-racial woman begins a cloak-and-dagger love affair with a Japanese American man, she is intent on keeping her bigoted family in the dark—albeit with devastating consequences. On the night of her brother’s murder, Deena Hammond stumbles upon Takumi Tanaka, lost and on the wrong end of a .32. After rescuing him from the certain fate driving through the hood in a Porsche will bring, a sweet kind of friendship begins. A balm for her grief. Maybe, Deena likes to think, it happened the day her white mother killed her black father. Or maybe, it was always a part of them, like DNA gone bad. Whatever the case, Deena knows that her family would never approve, hell, never acknowledge her fast-growing love for Takumi. And had he never made love to her that way, in that unraveling, soul-searching sort of way, she could’ve done the same. But love’s a devil that way. So, their game begins. One where they hide what they are from everyone. Anyone. And Tak understands this—for now. After all, Deena’s career hinges on the favor of her mentor and boss, his hard-ass of a father. And the Hammond family is already stretched thin with grief. Yet, each step Deena takes toward family and career brings her closer to an acceptance she’s never had. And away from him.

With remarkable skill, Shewanda Pugh paints a picture of a bi-racial woman from a disadvantaged background who is smart and ambitious enough to succeed at life, despite her family’s efforts to bring her right back down.

Deena Hammond is a great protagonist.  She’s got a foot in two worlds as we begin. We see her in her fancy suit, getting off a bus and arriving in a poor, gang-ridden neighborhood.  Her family derides her for her fancy ways and are just as biased against her white half as many others are biased against the black.

I felt both badly for and so proud of Deena as I read this book.  Her life is a struggle and she does her best to make it through. When she finally finds someone she can love, and who loves her right back it’s just another struggle.  Why?  Well, he’s Japanese and exceptionally wealthy (two HUGE strikes against him).

I wasn’t sure I’d like this book.  The blurb doesn’t do it justice but I’m so glad I gave it a chance.  It’s bold and tragic and sweet and encouraging.  The author’s writing skills can’t be faulted.  She created a world that was vivid and real and then invites the reader in.  Even with my very busy life, I managed to read this book in just a couple of days, and even now I think about it.  There are more stories here to tell:  I’d love to know the story behind Deena’s mother and the murder of her father. There are hints that it’s not all what it seems.  And Deena has another sibling she’s trying to save.  I’d like to see her sister’s story, too.  Then there’s Tak… he’s such an awesome hero, and he has family I became attached to as well.  I’m sure they have plenty to say!

If you’d like a book full of angst and love, family drama and family redemption, from an author who has amazing skills with the written word, I recommend you give this book a try.  I bet you won’t regret it.

Take away the control and what do you have left? Desire.

Melissa is smart, confident and head strong. She has her dream career and is a step away from becoming a partner at Grimly and Vimes. Richard ruins her perfect plan when he uncovers a serious indiscretion in her past and forces her to be his office sex slave for a week in return for his silence.

But Melissa finds out that she enjoys being told what to do. She craves punishment and adores to be put in her place and Richard does it so perfectly. It was not in her plan to fall in love but how will she cope when it happens anyway?

Reader Advisory:This story contains blackmail, forced acts of submission and elements of dubious consent.

There’s more than one way to a girl’s heart, especially if you decide to think out of the box.

This is what Richard does when he stumbles across a discrepancy in his colleague Melissa’s resume. She’s worked years to become highly successful and hopefully a future partner in Grimly and Vimes and he knows that she will have no choice but to go along with his absurd demands. By absurd I mean he insists that she becomes his, physically, in every way for one entire week.

Richard is one hot guy, with a few kinks thrown in, so naturally Melissa is both horrified and, it seems, intrigued at the naughty suggestion. She has a good battle in her head with why she shouldn’t become a ‘sex slave’, but ultimately she has no choice. She has to keep him silent and then ensure that he destroys the evidence.

I have read this author before and find her style fresh, light and wonderfully easy to read. This story is no exception. It has a good plot, great characters and there is some lovely introspection from the heroine as she comes to terms with not just her current erotic task but also her past. I particularly liked the scene in the boardroom when she is hidden under his desk. You can guess what happens I’m sure! All good fun and hot stuff!

If you want a quick read that’s not just steamy but also has emotion and a past, present and future then Switching the Control would be a good choice.
