After escaping a world of ruthless crime with her child, Shannon Nolan finally thought she’d left her nightmares in the past. Then the worst thing she could imagine happens: her son is kidnapped! With nowhere else to run and no one else to trust but her boss, she puts her life in Daniel Jennings’s hands.

Firefighter Daniel knows Shannon is safe under his protection, but the one threat he doesn’t want to face is his growing passion for her. Moreover, she’s vulnerable and isn’t searching for love. But as they put everything on the line to rescue her son, that very connection might just be what saves them all…

“You need to call the cops,” Daniel said flatly.

“I can’t.”

“They took your son,” he said, incredulous.

“I know!” She bit her lip against another outburst.

“What aren’t you saying?”

“He called,” she said. “When I got here. When I walked into the backyard, he called and said…”She could barely get the words out. “He said he’d send Aiden back to me in pieces if I involved the police.”

“Oh, Shannon.” He rubbed her shoulder.

The immense sympathy in those two words overwhelmed her. She didn’t know if she should lean into him or run away. “Thank you for helping her and fixing everything.”

“I followed you to help you,” he said, a lick of impatience in his voice. “You need to report this.”

“If I do and they hurt my baby, it will be my fault. I can’t live with that.”

“What’s really going on?”

“I don’t know much more than you do.” She didn’t realize she was crying again, or that Daniel had her wrapped in his arms until the fabric under her cheek was damp.

“Will you trust me?” Daniel asked when she quieted.

It seemed she already did.

Thanks so much, Long and Short Reviews for hosting me today while I’m happy dancing over the release of A Stranger She Can Trust.

Being a writer is a strange thing. Not everyone believes those moments of staring into space mean I’m working. And while every writer is unique in their process, there are general categories of those who plan and plot and those who simply take an idea and run with it. And then there’s me.

When I started on this adventure as a romance writer, it was out of desperation. I was a published poet working on my second collection, a stay-at-home mother of two, and my husband had come home to work for the second time in two years. I was frustrated having him ‘underfoot’ again and my poetry started to fall off theme. It was laughable – one poem was rainbows and sunshine, the next it sounded as if I was about to take a leap of the porch rail into the hydrangeas.

No, it wouldn’t have been a life-threatening leap. I likely wouldn’t even have twisted an ankle. But just in case, I did something more drastic. I started a book. It was fictionalization of how I’d met and fallen in love with my husband. A silly lark, an exercise to remind myself what I’d found so appealing about the man that I said ‘I do’ with all the romantic hearts and promises that go along with a happy ever after. It turned into the worst romance novel ever, but my husband and I still joke that it saved our marriage (LOL) and revealed my passion for writing novels.

Energized, I set out to become a better author and to pursue publication and joined Romance Writers of America. I soaked up everything I could from classes and conferences and learned about plotting writers (outlines rule!) and pantsing writers (who needs an outline?). I was definitely a pantser – planning a story spoiled the joy of discovery for me in the writing process.

As a newbie, I didn’t realize it was weird or possibly (gasp) ‘wrong’ to write a book out of order. It was just how I did things. If I got stuck on a scene, I’d jump to the place where I knew what would happen and then I just pieced it all together into order, smoothing out the edges and transitions in the revisions until it all flowed. Sometimes I even wrote a book in reverse.

When asked, I confessed my process during an RWA class, and the gazes aimed at me ranged from pity to horror, with one notable exception of the speaker who exclaimed with utter delight, “Oh, you’re a quilter!”

That moment and the discussion that followed affirmed my unique process and helped me understand there is no singular ‘correct’ way to write a book. What matters most is creating a wonderful experience for the reader.

It’s a lesson that empowered me and has kept me productive in a career I love and it’s the reason I use every opportunity to encourage others to find their unique strengths and run with them.

Live the adventure!

Outside a busy Philadelphia nightclub, a woman stumbles from her taxi. Beaten and bruised, she is an amnesiac who must rely on a handsome stranger to help her uncover her identity. Carson Lane—a paramedic with his own dark history—can’t help but bring this beautiful, vulnerable woman under his wing. As they begin unraveling who she really is, he realizes falling in love could be the biggest risk of all.

“Carson!”

He wheeled around to find Grant Sullivan, owner of the Escape Club, leaning into the kitchen doorway. “Sir?”

“I need a word.” He tipped his head toward his office. “Come on back.”

“Sure thing.” Carson untied the apron and left it on a hook by the kitchen door, then followed Grant down the hall. The man’s stocky build and easygoing outlook belied his quickness and boundless energy. At his boss’s gesture, he eased into one of the two chairs facing the desk. The office was quiet, only the dull throb of the band’s bass carrying through the floors.

“How did things go today?” Grant’s brown eyes were bright with anticipation. “On your PFD shift, I mean.”

“Smooth and normal shift,” Carson replied, hoping his relief at the easy question wasn’t too obvious.

Grant nodded, his thick salt-and-pepper eyebrows dipping low with his frown. “And the knee is holding up?”

“Yes.” Carson forced a smile. “Feeling stronger every day.” It was a small fib. The bullet had passed through his thigh, just above his knee, causing all kinds of damage to muscles and connective tissue along the way. He’d resumed walking three weeks after the surgery, but the pain had leveled out around week eight. Contrary to the physical therapy consensus, the motions never got easier.

“I got a call from Evelyn today. She’d like to get you back on the schedule full-time.”

“She said as much to me,” Carson admitted.

“So, why do you keep hanging around here?”

The chime sounded for a text message and Julia Cooper swiped her screen to check it. The number wasn’t familiar, though the area code was local. Her assumption about a wrong number evaporated instantly.

Hello, Julia. Are you having vinaigrette or ranch on today’s salad?

More than a little uncomfortable, Julia returned her fork to the bowl, glancing around for the person messing with her. None of her fellow associates at the firm cared how she dressed a salad enough to find out even for the sake of a prank. They all thought she was odd for leaving the building most days to eat outside. The true benefit of taking her lunch break in the park was the daily boost of sunshine, another rare commodity for a new hire at Marburg.

Ignoring the juvenile stunt, she resumed her lunch and headline search.

You look better in blue. And I prefer the skirt.

This text message arrived with a picture of her in yesterday’s charcoal skirt and white sweater.
A rush of nerves skated over her skin. Who had been watching her and how had she missed it? She forced herself to chew and swallow the peppery greens that had turned to tasteless mush in her mouth. Quickly she packed the remainder of her salad and prepared to head back to the office.

Don’t go. I’d like us to be friends.
