Sometimes, a one night stand can turn into forever. Unpredictable is an enchanting story filled with emotion and sexual tension. This is the first book I have read by Jenna Hartley and it is the fourth book in her Love in LA series and now that I have read this one, I want to read all the other books in this series. This was a wonderful surprise. It is well written with a great plot and characters that are easy to connect to. I fell into this story from the first page and remained riveted until the end.

From the moment Harrison meets Julianna, he finds himself intrigued and infatuated with her. Julianna also finds herself attracted to Harrison and can’t get him out of her mind, no matter how hard she tries. Julianna is a successful wedding planner but personally she is an emotional wreck. Harrison is exactly what she needs, but it takes her while to figure that out.

This has all the elements I love in a good story. Harrison is a former football star with a celebrity status. He is older than Julianna and from the moment they meet, sparks fly, and I knew they were meant to be together. I loved everything about this story. The writing flows from the first page and the dialogue is funny, snappy and filled with emotion. I fell in love with Harrison and Julianna. I wanted them to be together and I couldn’t put this book down, until I knew how everything turned out. Simply wonderful!

She Needed to be Seen…

As a lady’s companion, Clara Hartwright never receives much attention from anyone. And that’s precisely how she likes it. With a stormy past, and an unconventional plan for her future, it’s far safer to remain invisible. But when her new employer is invited to a month-long holiday at a remote coastal abbey, Clara discovers that she may not be as invisible as she’d hoped. At least, not as far as one gentleman is concerned.

He Wanted to be Heard…

Neville Cross has always been more comfortable with animals than people. An accident in his youth has left him with a brain injury that affects his speech. Forming the words to speak to his childhood friends is difficult enough. Finding the right things to say to a lovely young lady’s companion seems downright impossible. But Miss Hartwright is no ordinary companion. In fact, there may not be anything ordinary about her at all.

During a bleak Devon winter, two sensitive souls forge an unexpected friendship. But when Clara needs him most, will Neville find the courage to face his fears? Or is saying goodbye to her the most heroic thing he can do?

I know I’m getting older and don’t remember things like I used to, like every book I’ve ever read. I would like to think I’d never forget that Mimi Matthews was one of my favorite authors. While I was reading The Winter Companion, I had a vague feeling that I was familiar with the cast of characters and the setting. That sense of ‘knowing’ grew stronger as I continued turning the pages. I was enjoying the story too much to stop and look the book up on the internet. When I finished, I looked it up and sure enough, I was correct; I had read the first one in this series, The Matrimonial Advertisement. It all came back to me and now I’m sad that I hadn’t read the second and third books. The two that I have read can be read as standalone stories but I much prefer to go back and read the others.

This particular book was a very sweet romance with the bedroom door firmly closed. The heroine, Clara, was innocent and precious. I also found her to be intelligent but gullible yet maintained a strong independent mindset. Those conflicting set of characteristics somehow made her charming and a perfect match for the hero, Neville. Neville’s honesty and childlike mannerisms stole my heart. Together Neville and Clara built each other up. They both had issues from their past to overcome and I appreciated how they didn’t play mind games. They shared their past with each other and their dreams. It was entertaining to see them find their happily ever after.

One bone of contention I have is with Clara’s brother and her mother. Without spoiling anything, I’m not happy with how there is no mention of them afterwards. No apology or closure. I’m left with a few questions. Does Clara just never write or see them again? They were a significant part of the plot. They were the reason that Clara was a companion in the first place and ended up at Devon. I’m a picky reviewer when it comes to those kinds of loose threads.

I enjoyed the epilogue and found The Winter Companion to be an entertaining read. I’m just going to assume that Clara never spoke to her mother or her brother again as long as she lived. They didn’t deserve to have Clara in their lives anyway. What they did to her was unforgivable in my opinion. Neville’s love for Clara more than made up for this minor hiccup in the plot. Their happily ever after made for a satisfying read.

The Hardest Part About Writing

The hardest part about writing is figuring out what to say in a cohesive, interesting manner. There are a lot of ideas rattling around in my head but picking one and formulating it into a full-blown story is tough. It’s like watching a home renovation show and seeing great ideas for designing an office; lots of great ideas doesn’t magically turn your second bedroom into a beautiful office space! It takes hard work and determination.

Maybe it’s the engineer in me, but I take a very pragmatic approach toward writing. If I start with an idea, I consider what it is about that idea that may be interesting to an audience. Do I want to target a specific audience with this idea? If I do, will that audience care? If there isn’t an audience to receive your work, then you’re really just writing for yourself – which is perfectly fine! – but may not be the best way to expend your energy. If I’m going to put an idea out into the world, I want to make certain that it benefits someone other than myself, my hubbie and my cat.

Then, I create a plan. A plan of who and what the story is about. Who is my protagonist? What journey do I want the protagonist to experience? Do they come out better or worse at the end of that journey? Who is the antagonist? Is there a mentor along the way? Is there an overall theme, or am I just having fun with the story?

Once I’ve got a plan, I start to chart out the story beats. These are the main action points of the story, and need to connect together in a logical, enjoyable flow. Post-It notes or index cards are great for this, as you can move beats around easily if something is not flowing well. At any given time, my workspace may look like something from A Beautiful Mind! I need to see the logical plan before I can apply any creativity; if you want to make writing easier on yourself and save countless hours of frustration later, I highly recommend this process. When you have a plan and an organized flow, it’s easy to improvise and get creative from it – just like Louis Armstrong was so exceptional at improvising from a standard song.

Then it’s writing time! With a solid story flow in place, it becomes natural to fill in the story beats with scenes, actions and emotion. Perhaps illustrations if your story allows them. Notes are a crucial step in the process. I also recommend bouncing ideas and written pages off people you trust and whose opinion you value; what may seem like a brilliant idea in your head may land like a lead balloon in someone else’s.

And even after all these steps, writing is hard! The ideas may flow, but the writing may not always come easily. Be kind to yourself, take a break when you need to, and stick to your plan. And most importantly, stay true to who you are!

Smoke and chemicals mixed, and strange sounds came from the now empty lab. Sounds like… gurgling and burping? The door of the lab smashed open and out came…

… a small, roundish shape! It was midnight black and had the size and form of an upside-down cereal bowl. It slithered instead of rolled. It looked like melted dark chocolate but had a perfume like smell.

Suddenly, two roundish holes opened and turned pale blue. It had eyes! It could see! What in the world could this creature be?

Why… it’s Bartholomew Blob!
