Things at the ghostly junkyard have calmed down since Mel Hargrove and her boyfriend, Becker, destroyed a nasty ghost bent on mischief and mayhem. So when Becker brings a stray dog to her house, one that seems to understand far more than it should and might have brought along a ghostly friend, she is not exactly happy. A junkyard full of ghosts is no place for a pet — or for ghosts she can’t see or talk to.

She tries everything she has in her arsenal to get answers, but time is running out when she finally realizes what they’re up against. No amount of hairspray, jelly shoes, or lace gloves is going to get her out of a confrontation that threatens not only her home but possibly her very life.

Mel was a likeable and interesting main character. Her compassionate reaction to Mumford, the stray dog who had recently wandered into her life, only made me like her more than I already did. I was also amused by how she responded once she realized that he was different than most dogs.

There were some pacing issues. This book started off with a lot of stuff happening at once, so I was surprised by how much it slowed down after the first scene or two. It would have been nice to spread some of those plot twists out more. I had trouble staying focused on the plot during the slower sections of it.

The world building was well done. I started imagining the people and places who were part of it in vivid detail as soon as I finished the first page. It was especially interesting to find out what the author’s ideas were about why some folks become ghosts after death while others go straight on to the afterlife. Her explanation made perfect sense for the tone of the storyline, and it was also downright emotionally satisfying for me as a reader.

This is the second part in a series, but it can be read on its own or out of order. I hadn’t read part one yet, and I didn’t have any issues keeping up with what was going on.

Don’t Dream It’s Rover was a spooky, fun tale that I’d recommend to anyone who likes a little humour in their ghost stories.

What kind of woman ventures into London’s most notorious pleasure club? An outsider like Graciela, the Duchess of Autenberry, snubbed time and time again by society because of her Spanish roots. Ela longs to take a lover for a single, wild night, and within the walls of Sodom there are gentlemen to suit every forbidden taste. If only she were not so drawn to the smoldering Lord Strickland…a dangerous man who sees beyond her mask, and could ruin her reputation with a mere whisper.

Lord Strickland never permitted himself to fantasize about the sultry, off-limits lady, but then he never expected to find Ela in a place so wicked, looking for what he’s more than too happy to give. She may not be to the ton’s taste, but she suits him perfectly. First, however, he must convince her to trust in this dangerous desire—and in the promise of forever unleashed by one wild, scandalous night.

Thirty-five years of exemplary living are about to go down the drain, as Graciela, the widowed Duchess Autenberry is about to be busted. After being a devoted wife to a less than deserving husband, raising and loving three children and step children, and living chastely for ten years as a widow, “Ela” has decided to take a walk on the wild side. A friend has convinced Ela that a visit to Club Sodom will let her explore her sexuality with no strings, and perhaps find the fulfillment she never reached while married.

As luck would have it, Ela is about to come face to face with her stepson, Marcus, at the club. As a frantic Ela tries to leave or hide, she falls into the arms of Colin, her stepson’s best friend, who hides her from Marcus by embracing her. This embrace is something that Colin has fantasized about for years, and he begins a pursuit of Ela to truly begin an affair. I liked Ela, while at the same time became somewhat exasperated with her. I found her to be an admirable woman, who endured a loveless, physically unfulfilling marriage to a philandering husband, while letting his children believe he was a good man and husband. She retained her outward dignity while enduring snubs for her un-English heritage. Yet, though she endured these things, she’s terrified of exploring passion with a man who’s younger than she is, fearful of society’s censure and her family’s reaction. Colin is a dream – he doesn’t see Ela as an older woman, just a woman that he desires. I love his treatment of her and his fearlessness about other’s reactions if they are found out. I was somewhat disappointed at the plot device used which ultimately brought them together, but the fabulous conclusion remedied that.

The Scandal of It All is a hot and steamy read, which deals with the taboo of an older woman and a younger man in a time when it truly was shocking. I enjoyed the hero’s persistence and devotion, and eventually the heroine’s awakening to her own self worth on the way to their happy ever after.

Skilled rider and archer Annie Rose values her freedom. She doesn’t want to be anyone’s bride, not even deliciously and annoyingly sexy Iain Brodie’s. But her father wants an alliance with Iain’s clan and he’s chosen her to forge it. Unaware she could be sealing the fate she desperately wants to avoid, Annie falls under Iain’s seductive spell at the spring known in old tales as the fairy pool.

But when her father suddenly decides against their match, Annie discovers the love she never expected to find–with Iain. To win her, Iain must risk losing everything he values–the clan he was born to lead and even Annie, the woman he sees for who she truly is–his only love.

His Highland Rose was an easy entertaining read. I wasn’t ready for the ending when it came. It was over before I knew it. The synopsis pretty much tells the entire story so there weren’t any tense surprises or unexpected plot twists. Everything was nicely wrapped up with a happily ever after ending.

The romance between Lain Brodie and Annie was spicy and fun. Brodie’s eyes were set on Annie and no other sister would do. He just had to have her. Annie was set on never marrying so it was fun to see Annie fall under Brodie’s spell. Brodie was irresistible!

All the characters were well developed. I especially enjoyed the bond between the sisters. I know that this story is a prequel to His Highland Love which is a story about Annie’s sister Mary Catherine. I am looking forward to reading her romance with Kenneth who is Lain’s cousin. I also found the relationship between the father and his three daughters to be realistic and a bit humorous. I will say that the three sisters are quite clever. I don’t think the father really stood a chance against them, at least not when they put their heads together to achieve changing his mind.

This is my second book written by Willa Blair that I’ve read and I can say that her writing style makes for a pleasant romantic read. His Highland Rose was a simple yet fun, well-paced enjoyable read. If you haven’t read a book by Willa Blair than I’d suggest you give this one a try.

A truly lovely story regarding love in almost impossible circumstances. Both hero and heroine, Trish and Dan, have things in their past, and lurking under the surface in the present, which make both hesitate to take the final step into a relationship.

Dan is blind due to an explosion in Afghanistan, while Trish has a daughter with Downs Syndrome. Her daughter Bella, is gorgeous. She is the pivot around which the story revolves. A lovely young girl who is stubborn and determined, but who is loved by both her mother and Dan.

Living near the beach means life by the sea plays a big part in the story especially toward the end. What a ride!

I had sort of an idea what I was getting into when I picked up this book. Cougar and cub story with hot sex and a good time… It’s intriguing. There are moments when the book is hot. Like scorching the page hot. The writing is fast-paced and Solene is relatable. Who wouldn’t want the adoration of a younger man?

But I had a few problems with the book. Hayes is an interesting character. He’s part of a boy band. Initially, I thought this would make him rather vapid. I mean, he’s got money and women thrown at him, plus the adoration of teens everywhere. I can see where it would go to his head. And it does to a degree. One minute he’s rather wise beyond his years, but then other times he’s very much a twenty year old. Then there’s Solene. I liked her. I mean, she’s in a tough spot. She wants to be loved and wants to find herself, but doesn’t know where that finding herself is. Cool premise. But I got a tad bored with her. Okay, she’s got a hot younger man (think one of the One Direction guys) who is fawning all over her. I get her emotional maturity in dealing with him, but she’s the same kind of waffle-y character as Hayes. One minute she’s mature and the next she’s almost scandalized by what she’s doing. I liked that she wasn’t totally sure, but I also kind of wanted her to have more of a backbone. If you want him, take him.

Still, it was a good read. A good beach read with lots of fantasy – how many people really meet the boys in the boy band and have a tryst – and plenty of heat. If you’re into books that are escapism, then this might be the one for you.

It’s been two years since the invasion.

Two years since the slicks came to our planet and herded humanity together like cattle, placing us under constant watch in the few cities that remain. The lucky ones are left to their own devices. The unlucky few are rounded up and carted off to labor camps to face an unknown fate.

Former homicide detective Adrian Grace was cut off from his family, but has somehow managed to survive. When one of the slicks is murdered, they ask him to find the killer. He reluctantly agrees, and in the course of his investigation witnesses the best, and the worst, that humanity has to offer: a plot to escape the labor camps; a pending war between an in-your-face councilwoman and the corrupt city mayor; and a priest who claims to have befriended the dead alien. But worst of all, he stumbles onto a conspiracy that puts the fate of the entire city in jeopardy. In the end, Detective Grace discovers that the killer might just be the last person he would have suspected.

A story about betrayal, redemption, faith, fear, and hope, The Last Detective is a thrilling look at what happens to humanity when our world crumbles around us.

Humans, by nature are very adaptable- unfortunately this can be good and bad.

Since the aliens conquered humanity, daily existence is just that-existing and surviving. There are no goals, and no real jobs unless you are unlucky enough to be chosen for the labor camps or if you choose to work for the aliens policing the rest of humanity. Adrian Grace used to be a homicide detective, but not anymore. That is, until he is asked to undertake an investigation into the death of one of the aliens.

The Last Detective is a stunning in-depth story that looks at life after the destruction of civilization; and not where many stories try to pick up with the rise of the underdog-but a true look at what happens when there is no impending insurrection, when there is no hope. The Last Detective is an amazing look at the rivers of humanity that flow between the islands of despair in the darkest depths of loss.

Brian Cohn draws the reader into a world that has given up. The plot of The Last Detective is not sadness or the bleakness of reality, but what humanity can and will do to survive. I love how the author took the perspective of Adrian Grace as an individual not set on “fixing” the world, but with a realistic view of the society. While working the case, turn after turn, things change and hidden agendas are revealed.

I love a good mystery and Brian delivers. I was sure I had everything figured out, and then suddenly I was wrong. Not only that, the evidence to the contrary was sitting in front of me the whole time! The dark schemes and the intense dialogue and plot make this one of the best Science Fiction Mysteries that I have read in some time.

I highly recommend reading The Last Detective! It will give you a new view and a very real understanding of human nature!

Elaine Hannel thought she lost her first-born forty years prior during childbirth. That is until he came to her uncovering a decades’ old mystery she didn’t know existed. Shocked, Elaine is forced to relive the past she’d put behind her so long ago, with a former lover and the death of her child she only met for a blink of a moment.

While the rest of the Hannels are confused, and feel deceived, Lucy Brooks is the only person accepting and sympathetic of Alexander and his plight. A single parent herself, she sees in Alex a man who will do anything for his son, no matter the pain and conflict it causes. What she doesn’t see is the soul connection to a man so overburdened with life, all he has left is to let go and let her take some of that away for him.

I know this is a romance, but I’m telling you right now… Elliot is my favorite book character of the year.

Falling For Hope follows the stories of two people whose love lives up to this point have been abysmal. Neither has a good record for choosing a partner, and yet they’re both still so big-hearted and loving. Both Alexander and Lucy are adorable folks and I thoroughly enjoyed following their story. And I loved the entire group of characters we get to see — I haven’t read the other books in the series, and while it was clear I’d missed something (the other couples would casually mention how they’d met, and there were clearly some very exciting stories there) this book stands solidly as a standalone.

I did think Alexander’s story was believed too easily. Yes, I know Elaine’s story was a secret and folks couldn’t have known it easily, and apparently he resembled his father, but the Hannels are a very well-to-do family and would be an easy mark for a con man. So I did have some reservations at how quickly Elaine was willing to welcome him into the fold with no actual proof. Of course, the kids had their issues, but it was one of those things that poked at me. Also, as much as I loved Elliot (and I really, really did) he was pretty darn precocious for his age. Also, given their love life backgrounds, I was honestly surprised at how quickly our two main characters fell madly in love.

However, those concerns aside, this is ultimately a story about love, in its many forms. Above and beyond the romance between Alexander and Lucy, we get Elaine’s story (and boy, does her husband love her), the story between mother and son (Lucy and Cameron), the story between father and son (Alexander and Elliot) and so much more. It tugged the heartstrings and made me feel and that’s the sign of a really good story.

AutoCorrect strikes again. Damn—he should’ve proofread. How embarrassing.

Luckily Darrell Anderson, a mechanic and the owner of the Prius, is more amused than offended, and the two men agree to meet. When they do, the attraction is instant, and a date is arranged. But a series of mishaps, misunderstandings, and misplaced assumptions sorely test the new relationship.

In a contemporary romantic comedy about the perils of technology and dating in the modern world, a text that went so wrong might just lead to something so right—but only if Clay can refrain from jumping to conclusions and give love the benefit of the doubt.

Texting “I saw your penis for sale on Craigslist. Is it still available?” is certainly one way to grab a man’s attention. When Clay accidently sends this text – autocorrect changing “Prius” to “Penis” – Darrell can see the humour in the situation. This leads to an amusing and wonderful new relationship between the two men – one that both hope will lead to something more.

After what I personally felt was a slow start, I found this to be a fun and very sexy story. Readers who like their romances to be eased into will likely enjoy this beginning. Darrell is a mechanic and Clay is a strong car aficionado. They have plenty in common along with a healthy amount of respect and desire for each other’s cars and bodies. The author, however, introduces both characters – and a few interesting secondary characters – quite solidly as individuals before Darrell and Clay even really meet. While I personally would have preferred them to meet slightly faster and have that extra time and space to read about them getting to know each other and date – I can’t completely fault the author for giving the story, and both Darrell and Clay’s characters a good, solid basis before moving the romance forward.

Once Darrell and Clay do manage to give the Prius a test drive the heat sizzling between them explodes and their romantic relationship really begins to flourish. I thoroughly enjoyed the sex and chemistry that grew in leaps and bounds between the two men. I also was delighted that Clay – a few noticeable years younger than Darrell – was the Top in their relationship. While not unheard of, it certainly isn’t a common aspect in M/M relationships that I’ve read and I was both surprised and thrilled by how much I enjoyed it. I also really liked the detail and depth the author took – really going into some of the layers that grew between Darrell and Clay. As the two men work out the newness of their relationship and ride through the various emotions they each bring out in each other I really felt this story didn’t gloss over or shy away from a number of aspects new relationships entail – as lots of other romance stories do. I found the BDSM to be incredibly mild – more a matter of Clay wanting to be in charge sexually than actual whips-and-chains type of kink or the harder side of the BDSM lifestyle. I feel most readers happy with an erotic M/M storyline with explicit sex shouldn’t find the BDSM aspects of the story to be hard-core or shocking.

Two of the secondary characters showed the potential in my opinion to become a sequel and I certainly plan to keep an eye out for more stories by this author. This was a fun, lighthearted and car-savvy story with a hint of spice and was a brilliant way to spend the weekend. A great read and one I will enjoy again in the future.
