Anna is a mysterious woman that has just moved to Regina Beach. The residents of the small town know everyone’s business and they are very interested in discovering Anna’s secrets. Nick was a Sergeant in the Canadian Army, doing active duty until a horrific accident sent him home to recover. He helps Anna feel safe and comfortable in her new environment, just as he has always done for his men in strange, dangerous places. Meanwhile, he focuses on preparing for his future physical endurance test to prove that he is capable of returning to active duty.

Anna doesn’t talk about her past, and Nick doesn’t talk about his future therefore she is shocked to discover that his greatest wish is to return to active duty. She won’t love a man who may die on the job again. Intellectually, she knows that all life cycles end, but emotionally, she doesn’t know if she has the strength to support Nick.

Anna Jenkins is a broken woman looking for solace from the sad eyes and well meaning platitudes of friends and family for grief they couldn’t even begin to understand. Losing her fiancé was bad enough, but as a trauma nurse she’s surrounded by daily reminders of his accident. It was enough to send Anna over the edge. While she knew everyone meant well, getting away from it all was just what she needed to begin healing. Murray’s cottage by the lake seemed to be the perfect place to start her new life, away from all the memories. Will Anna get what she needs from this tiny water side town? With Anna’s secrets, she can only hope the locals won’t pry and instead will let her be until she’s ready to tell them her story, if ever.

Nick Donnelly wasn’t expecting to ever have to come home from the Canadian Forces, until one day an IED took his decision away. The hero has two choices left , heal and find a new path, or be buried by the resentment eating away at the man he is and never heal. The journey is heartbreaking and real and all I wanted to do was hug Nick. His character made me ache from the agony, both emotional and physical, that he was in. The author did a wonderful job of bringing his pain to life in the pages of this book.

When Anna shows up on the doorstep of his B&B, haunted shadows in her eyes and needing a haven where she too can heal, Nick makes it his mission to help her and in turn begins his own healing. When feelings begin to develop between these two broken souls, can forgiveness and moving on be the very thing they both need to find each other in the abyss?

Set in Saskatchewan, Canada, the book was a delightful read. The characters, Anna and Nick were both so broken it would have been easy to write them both off, but Annette Bower made the entire story about healing broken hearts and soothing rioting souls. This was a great tale about forgiveness and moving on from tragedy without harping on all the bad that happened to the main characters. I will definitely read this story again and recommend it to other readers I know. If you are looking for a great story with a wonderful ending, then this is the story for you.

Lord Drake Boscastle has everything–smoldering good looks, extreme wealth, and devilish charms. Everything, that is, except true happiness. Hoping to satisfy his growing discontent, he is set to meet one of the most celebrated courtesans in England for a heated rendezvous. But on the scheduled night of pleasure, Lord Drake’s world is turned upside down by Eloise Goodwin, a wholesome, spirited governess with voluptuous curves and a beguiling wit. Even with an experienced seductress willing to satisfy his every need, Lord Drake cannot forget his encounter with Eloise.

Although swept off her feet by the mysteriously handsome rake, Eloise has more pressing matters to address. Her rebellious young client has escaped into the night with a local rogue and is nowhere to be found. Stepping in to assist, Lord Drake must try to resist his desire to indulge the longing passion he feels for Eloise. But once a scoundrel, always a scoundrel . . . or has the untamable Lord Drake at last been tamed?

The life of a companion isn’t usually this exciting or fraught with peril and intrigue but Ms. Hunter has written a heroine as fascinating and unusual as a woman can be. It was a great reading experience and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Eloise is all about duty, responsibility and plans. She’s focused, dedicated and suffers the indignity of caring for a spoiled rotten young lady who causes more problems than one woman should. All the heroine has to do is keep an eye on her until the wedding and then she’s free to pursue her goal of joining a lady’s academy. It’s almost a done deal, except for two things — a chance meeting that causes a sensual explosion of her well organized world, and her charge disappearing with the most unsavory character sets in motion a romance that shouldn’t have had a chance.

I liked Eloise because for all of her innocence, she’s no dummy. She observed the people that she came in contact with and learned the signals that told her to beware and avoid. However, nothing prepared her for Lord Drake Boscastle. I don’t think any woman could ever understand what it’s like to meet a man such as he. The hero is cynical, jaded, bored with life and too good looking for his own peace of mind. He’s at the point in his life where he knows he’s missing something and tries to take on a challenge that would jump start his interest in life. Instead he accidentally dallies with an intriguing young miss and his world is never the same. Readers will get a kick out of how easily and completely he falls under the heroine’s spell.

Eloise has secrets that are pretty darned funny but the most amazing thing is what the author decided to do with that secret. The saying, “What goes around, comes around” has never been truer. As the story unfolded, a certain possibility reared its head and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I knew something about someone in the book. Imagine my delighted surprise to realize it was true and once again, Ms. Hunter used a unique development to good effect in furthering the plot. It was funny, bittersweet and for the hero, quite the shock.

The whole conversational scene between Drake and Devon, his brother, was fun and 100% entertaining. I liked Devon, he’s got style and I hope to see more of him. The best illustration of their relationship is this bit of repartee,

Drake shook his head in exasperation. “What do you think, Devon?”

“I think you’re a damn moody swine.”

“I never claimed to be a bloody ray of sunshine.”

I loved that! What came next gave me the giggles. And after that was excitement. Then after that was a most intriguing hook that kept me glued to the pages. This book had it all.

The conflict threads are basically: staying one step ahead of the gossipmongers, keep Thalia pure and present for the wedding, have Eloise keep her own reputation intact, solve the mystery as to how to get rid of a certain burr and nuisance and the big one, how to be the perfect mistress when the hero is too dense to realize he’s really looking for something else. The interesting thing about the above mentioned list is how it changed throughout the book. Much like real life, goals and wants change with the experiences of life and new possibilities open up and take people on new adventures. That certainly happens in this story.

Secondary characters make the book fascinating. They spice up the lives of the hero and heroine with humor, steadfast support when things get really dramatic, and they help showcase just how wonderful Eloise and Drake really are for each other. The dialogue was entertaining and peppered with quips and side comments that amuse and inform. The villain was a worm and deserved what he got. Oh, and Thalia’s brother is a moron.

The Wicked Games of a Gentleman is an entertaining and engaging tale that prompts a reader to grin, gasp and keep glued to its pages. The book is filled with excitement, has a spicy and delicious romance and a hero and heroine that I enjoyed getting to know. It was a lot of fun and the characters were written well enough that I am inspired to find more stories on the Boscastle brothers. Thank you, Ms. Hunter for introducing readers to such interesting and challenging men to redeem.

A hundred years before, the villagers of Balleywalegh drove the vampire preying on their womenfolk from their midst…and that should’ve been the end of it. But now, it’s 1929, and the monster’s back. Or is he? Someone’s definitely occupying the abandoned manor house again. Karel Novotny has the same name as the former Undead resident but he’s much, much younger, and more up-to-date. He even drives a Stutz Bearcat! With his movie idol good-looks, he’s enthralled the local lasses, especially Seamus Flannery’s daughter Brigid. Seamus isn’t much for believing in vampires or any other creature of the night but he’s a little worried about the pale young man’s attention to his daughter. And when Brigid becomes suddenly and unexplainably ill, he has to make a decision.

Is Karel Novotny the monster returned or not, and if so, what will the good men of Balleywalegh do this time?

Are the superstitions of the town’s folk silly, or is there really something to fear in the dark?

Seamus Flannery’s peaceful life is shattered the moment his wife, Maeve, starts shrieking uncontrollably when she sees a light in an old deserted manor. Like Seamus, I wondered why something so simple would send a woman into hysterics. Maeve isn’t the only one who has seen the light. Seamus soon learns that the people in the town believe a vampire has taken up residence in the old manor. At first Seamus laughs it off, but after meeting Karel Novotny, the owner of the manor, he isn’t so sure. After Seamus does a bit of digging through the town history, he learns there was indeed a vampire in the town over a hundred years ago. Seamus begins to wonder if the vampire has come back to exact the revenge he promised.

Karel is certainly intriguing. I thought he handled the attention of the town’s folk very well. While he seems to genuinely want the people to like him, I also got the impression he was playing with them a little bit. I was pretty sure he wasn’t actually a vampire, but it’s clear he IS hiding something. I found myself racing through the pages determined to figure out his secret.

I liked Seamus immediately. He’s a very pleasant, down to earth man who provides the much needed voice of reason when the men of Balleywalegh want to charge up to Karel’s house and destroy him. Seamus admits Karel is odd, but he won’t convict a man of being a vampire without concrete proof. I found Maeve’s test of a garlic laden dish at the town potluck to be especially entertaining.

Seamus’ weakness is his daughter, Brigid. When she and Karel start to become close, Seamus can’t help but feel overprotective of his child. I couldn’t help but smile when Seamus managed to interrupt the romantic interludes between Brigid and Karel. However, when Brigid falls prey to a mysterious illness, Seamus lets superstition get the better of him. He and the rest of the men in the town decide to take matters into their own hands. I was on the edge of my seat as Seamus and his friends marched up to the manor. Would they discover a bloodthirsty vampire, or were they about to make the biggest mistake of their lives?

I was completely surprised at the way the story ended. I did have a few things figured out, but I never saw the truth about Karel coming. I did find the ending a bit abrupt for a story that had so much build up. However, I still found the conclusion satisfying and I certainly had a smile on my face when I finished the story.

Vampires Are Forever is definitely a fun, fast paced story. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down until I’d finished it. Readers wanting to know Karel’s secret should certainly pick up a copy of Vampires Are Forever today.

Plain old ice cream just isn’t going to cut it. To beat these blues, chef Olivia Marconi needs the good stuff: rich, creamy tiramisu gelato. And no place better to get it than Italy. But a fresh start is nearly impossible with Sean Kindred dogging her every move. She’s been burned by his too-hot-to-handle antics before. Though there’s no denying the man can still get her all fired up. Could a weeklong affair finally turn into something more lasting…or will it all go up in flames?

Even a chef gets the blues. When all else fails, it’s time for a little something different. Say, going to Italy! Who knew a change of scenery could change a life? Certainly not Olivia. At least, not in the way that it happened.

Do you ever just get burnt out, even with something you’re passionate about? It happens. Everyone gets to that point some time in their life. That’s what the heroine in Luscious faces. Olivia is ready for a change, and she’s about to embrace it. Being a chef has been her life, but something just doesn’t draw her to it like it once did. Much to some people’s dismay, she’s ready to move on. I can relate to Olivia easily. She’s searching for something, though she’s not sure yet what she needs.

Sean needs Olivia. When he gets a chance to be around her more, he jumps on it. What a surprise when he shows up to go with her! I like Sean, a lot. He’s smooth, charming, and witty. I love how he’s so great to Olivia, and I knew he had feelings for her right away. He’s got a few things he needs to resolve, but as a whole, Sean makes for one heck of a hero!

Luscious is a fun read. The setting, the plot, the characters all come together for a fast-paced, funny and touching novel. Ms. Usen writes with flair and charm. The book left me with a smile on my face and a good feeling. It’s the kind of story that takes your mind off of real life and puts you in a cheery mood. A story about finding what, and who makes you happy is a winner in my eyes! This story will have a place on the keepers shelf.

All in all, I enjoyed this story! I can’t get enough of fun contemporary romps that have “a chance at being happy again” kind of feel. If you love stories full of heart, romance, and a little fun in Italy, Luscious awaits you.

There’s one question a girl should always say yes to…

But Lucy Gibson said no. On national TV. Now she’s hated by nearly everyone.

Fleeing the spotlight’s glare, Lucy holes up in a cottage in the country, where she just might find the right reasons to say yes after all…

From beloved novelist Philipa Ashley, Just Say Yes is a sharp and exuberant tale of the rocky road to love that’ll leave you saying “Yes!”

Lucy Gibson’s life is a muddled mess. A mediocre job, parties that produce miserable hangovers, and trying to sort out her feelings about Nick Laurentis, the gorgeous but unreliable man she has a “sort” of relationship with have her unsettled.

When Nick makes her a prime target for the tabloids, she departs the city with Fiona, to stay at Fiona’s cottage at the sea shore. There, where no one knows who she really is, she seeks answers, but none seem to be forth coming and the constant worry about being recognized hounds her.

“Not-quite-telling-the-truth’ and not knowing where she’s going in her life has Lucy worn to a frazzle. Consequently, when Josh Standring offers her a job cleaning cottages and settling in new renters for the season, Lucy accepts. Josh, a windsurfer and former bad boy, has a relationship with Sara who works at the yacht club, so Lucy declares him off-limits, but convincing her heart and body is another thing.

Fiona, Lucy’s best friend, is a successful author and often uses her “creative” thinking to offer Lucy advice, some of which leads to strife. Her “research” and how she chooses her male companions make for some delightful reading. Of course, her dog Hengist does his part in the humor department as he blunders about and frolics with Tally, Josh’s black Labrador.

Josh has a past that he’s still trying to come to terms with. It often colors his view of people. To him trust and honesty are “musts”. He’s also working through many other issues, like growing up and accepting the responsibility of taking care of his inheritance if he expects it to make him a living.

Charlie, Lucy’s neighbor and friend in London, creates his own special type of humor, but he also looks after her when things are unpleasant. He injects some clever British humor into this piece. Just Say Yes is full of bathos, irreverence, innuendo and ambiguity, and misinterpreting what is heard. The story sweeps the reader into a fictitious world that bubbles with comic relief as it reveals a love story that thrills the heart.

Phillipa Ashley creates fun-to-read fiction while subtly working in humanity’s bent to commit more than a few of the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’. She uses humor in a winsome, wicked way to shepherd the characters past their flaws and foibles to propel them to a happy-ever-after with a sizzle. Just Say Yes is sparkling entertainment!

After signing up for a one-night stand through an exclusive matching agency, hopeless romantic Marianne Caldwell is swept away to a medieval land where she hopes to spend the night with a worthy man of honor.

Unsure of how she got from the Castillo Hotel in Las Vegas to a castle in the English countryside, Mare finds Robert, whose stunning physique and winning smile immediately convince her he’s the Robin Hood she’s been seeking. But despite his efforts saving her from a corrupt sheriff, his Jersey Shore accent and coarse ways unravel her romantic visions.

With her fairytale fantasies coming unhinged, Mare must decide if Robert is just a crass car salesman from Brooklyn or the chivalrous knight she’s looking for.

What to do when your Robin Hood fantasy date sounds like a guy from Brooklyn and your hotel turns into a castle from the past? Why, go with the flow and leave reality up in the air!

Marianne Caldwell, was supposed to be having a Robin Hood fantasy date with someone named Robert at a Las Vegas hotel that resembled a castle. In a modern take on Robin Hood and Maid Marian, she meets a handsome stranger outside of the hotel and feels drawn to him. What a shock when he starts talking like a blue collar worker from Brooklyn. Robert is a car salesman, also on a fantasy date, looking for Marianne. A convenient band of bad guys and a sprained ankle give Robert the perfect opporunity to play hero to her maiden in distress.

Mare has been looking for someone for the long term, but so far has only found short-term relationships. She’s hoping this would be her chance at true lasting love. Robert is a bit of a mystery but he’s a good guy, with a young son, and concerned faimly who want him to be happy.

The plot was very interesting and made me want to read the entire story in one sitting. I am looking forward to more stories from Ms. Major. One Knight in Brooklyn is a very enjoyable, hot, quick read, perfect for when you have or need a break during the day. It’s well written and fast-paced with just enough humor to keep it light. At the same time, Ms. Major writes some terrifically sexy scenes to keep the tension popping. A story like this makes me wish that I could have such an experience. It’s a great addition to Decadent Publishing’s 1 Night Stand Series and an easy recommend.

INTERVIEW: MARIA HAMMARBLAD

Photobucket

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Maria Hammarblad, whose latest release Kidnapped is now available. Maria will give a download of Kidnapped to one lucky commenter.

She uses a pen name, but it was more an accident than by design.

“I got married and thought that changing my author name would confuse everyone. Unfortunately, my original name is kind of confusing too,” she admitted with a laugh, “but it’s uncommon. Hopefully, it’s weird enough for people to remember it.”

Maria has always wanted to make books and has also had an obsession with pens and paper.

“I was hopeless as a child – I drew on everything,” she confessed. “My mom taught me to read very early and I didn’t have the motor skills necessary to form readable letters, so I made her staple papers together into booklets that I drew in. I must have made hundreds of books with the sun and the moon. When I became a little older, I scribbled incomprehensible science fiction stories in notebooks and forced my friends to read them. It continued from there.”

Apart from writing books, when Maria was younger she wanted to do all kinds of thing and has checked several of them off her list. She wanted to work with computers and did for many years, until she got bored with it. She thought musicians were cool, and her parents told her she’d never be able to do it—an irresistible combination, so she played bass in three rock bands for a while. She also watched a lot of science fiction and wanted to be an astronaut so she could go into space. That she hasn’t quite gotten figured out, so she does the next best thing—she writes about it.

The author of eight books, Maria told me that Kidnapped is her favorite so far, but she’s also very fond of The Goddess’s Saga, a series of science fiction romance sprinkled with mythology. There are three novels with the same characters available, and it’s also available as a collection volume.

“I have material in my head for another book in the series, but this far I haven’t had time to write it,” she said.

She’s currently working on some edits for her next release, Undercover, a romantic thriller that will be released by Desert Breeze Publishing in September.

Maria told me that she has a very hard time naming characters, places, languages, and books.

“Kidnapped contains an alien language, and when I needed a name for it I almost turned my brain inside out. When I was about ready to give up and write around it so I wouldn’t have to name it, my eyes fell on a packet with chips, and I thought, ‘Stax. Good enough. Let’s call it Stax.’ Same thing with the books. I have to brainstorm and start writing random words on a paper. ‘She’s abducted… No good, sounds like little green men doing unmentionable things… Taken… Lost… Kidnapped… Hey, Kidnapped, that’s not too bad.”

I asked her to describe her writing space and she laughed.

“I don’t really have one – I write everywhere. Ideas come in the most peculiar places. Sometimes I have to pull the car over and write on my phone to make sure I don’t forget anything. I wrote most of Kidnapped sitting in bed at nights scribbling on my iPod, and then I e-mailed it to my computer and put it all together. I like to sit outside and write. Sometimes I drive to the beach and sit in my car with my feet out the window, Lately I haven’t had enough time to go anywhere, so I’ve mostly been sitting on the sofa with my laptop, the dogs, and a mug of coffee.”

“Are you a plotter or a pantser?” I asked.

“I fall somewhere in between, I guess I’m a plotster. I usually have an outline either written down or in my head, but my characters definitely have lives of their own, and the story lines sometimes twist in ways I would never have expected when I started the book. Sometimes characters just don’t like each other, even though they should.”

Since Maria writes mostly science fiction romance, she wanted to not only appeal to readers who have never picked up a science fiction book in their lives, but she doesn’t want to disappoint readers who are familiar with the genre—those readers who are usually technologically savvy and have a good idea of what’s possible and what isn’t. So, she enrolled in a college course in Astrobiology.

“The things I write evidently aren’t real, and any science in the book is sprinkled with a good dose of imagination,” she said, “but it needs to be somewhat plausible.”

Some die-hard science fiction fans have told her that she writes “Space Opera” and not “Science Fiction.”

“I hadn’t even heard the word Space Opera before,” she said. I still haven’t figured out what it’s supposed to be; it’s probably a cultural difference. I’m sure a science fiction writer is supposed to have a scientific approach to building worlds, but I’m more interested in the story itself.”

When it comes to world-building, Maria admitted that, in theory, she should probably sit down with pens and paper and map out her worlds, their geological features and the major species on each, their technological advances, favorite foods, plants, pets. “It just sounds so boring,” she told me. “To me, the pirates lurking behind that little moon about to attack the heroine’s spaceship are much more interesting. I make stuff up as I go. I sometimes toss in some actual science – in Touch of the Goddess the heroine discusses how the shape of shorelines affects ocean streams – but it’s a bare minimum. I believe both my readers and I are more interested in what happens than how the moon they’re on can be big enough to maintain an atmosphere.”

Finally, I asked, “What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?”

“Write. It sounds like funny advice to a writer, but if you wait for that perfect day when you have peace and quiet, time, a good cup of coffee, a perfect pen, and inspiration, odds are you’ll be waiting for a long time. Make room for writing in your schedule, and keep at it even if you don’t feel like it.

Once you get further along and want to submit your masterpiece to agents or publishers, my best advice is, ‘Don’t give up.’ There will be rejection letters. That doesn’t mean your story is bad. I got a rejection letter for another person’s book once. Ignore it, get up, and try again.”

But a campaign in his old home town pushes him too far, and he discovers what really happened to his mother. From the moment of conception, it seems as if life was out to get Fezariu. Starting with a mother who abandons a life of prostitution to bear her son, his life leads to one loss after another. Life as a mercenary can be a tricky thing and in the end, it might lead him right back to what he vowed he’d never have, nor want. It’s bound to be a grand adventure, however.

Fezariu is an intriguing character and shows a considerable amount of growth throughout the story. As a boy, he’s curious, considerate, and strong-willed. As a man, he’s seen too much and been through too many battles. Despite the fact that he’s seen so much loss and has hardened his heart to the world around him, he maintains a soft spot for his trio of friends and the girl that had been raised as his sister, Alycea. Both his friends and his constant thoughts of Alycea keep his mind on the task at hand and remind him of why he’s doing what he’s doing, even when the doubt creeps in. Even with all his conflicting thoughts and actions, he is eventually able to pull it all together into something that not only works for him but makes sense in the world he’s living in. His struggles throughout the novel have a lot to tell us about how we handle our relationships in our lives.

Every hero needs a trio of good friends, right? Fezariu definitely has a good band of companions to help him along the way to his epiphany. Tessera is a tough but kind-hearted girl who really becomes his closest companion. With her purple hair and sharp shooting skills, she’s an attractive and useful member of his party. Vintaro is by far the most interesting – and entertaining – companion. He’s a toldere which is a wolf-like creature covered in fur but walks upright like a man. He is definitely there for comic relief a lot of the times and to have your back the rest. Arshea is the lonely heart of the group, having joined the mercenaries to make a fortune and return home to be with his love. Together with Fezariu, they make a well-rounded bunch of friends, each with their own needs and skills to make a functional and successful group of mercenaries.

Fezariu’s Epiphany has everything a good fantasy novel needs. Heroes, villains, a group of inseparable companions, and more action than you can shake a stick at. The one issue I had was with the writing voice. At times it was a bit flat for my tastes. However, in these moments, the story and the characters took over and pulled me through the rough spots. If I could have one wish, it would be to learn more about the trio of friends he has as we’re given only enough to know the basics. But that is personal preference, I do like to know all I can about the characters I’m reading.

Fezariu’s Epiphany is an exciting journey through a foreign land with a group of mercenaries that suddenly wind up as your friends.

Cuban-born, award-winning Miami Architect and successful real estate developer Cid Milan suddenly faces a dilemma when his dying father reveals to him a shocking twenty-five year old family secret. Cid realizes there is only one thing he can do to unravel the mystery of his own past and right the wrongs committed. He must return to the land he abandoned. In his quest, Cid rediscovers himself and his roots as he searches frantically throughout Cuba for his teenage flame, Sandra, and the secret she kept from him all these years. In the process, Cid learns an invaluable lesson about love, forgiveness and redemption which changes his life forever.

However Long the Night was a gritty, incredibly realistic portayal of life for Cid Milan, a Cuban who came to America more than twenty years prior to the story’s real beginning.  Cid wasn’t always the most heroic of heroes, at least not at the start.  I admit I struggled to like him for the first several chapters.  He’s arrogant, selfish and I wasn’t overly impressed with his moral compass (especially about what caused an estrangement between him and his brother, Manny).  Still, as time and pages passed, it became clear that Cid was molded by his past and that underneath the outer layer was a man with a good heart and a sense of right and wrong.  I may not have always agreed with his behavior or choices, but I understood the reason why he acted the way he did.

This story is layered with conflict over conflict, from the discovery of a family secret and Cid’s decision to return to Cuba and the things he learns there, to the internal machinations of people looking to betray Cid within Cid’s own company.  There’s so much going on sometimes, it leaves the reader breathless.

I thorougly enjoyed reading about Cuba. For most of us here in America, Cuba is a land of mystery. We know little about it, and Mr. Pereda certainly embued his story with loads of information about the country:  its sights, sounds and people — the good and the bad.

I think the story really gained traction once it entered Cuba. More questions were posed, intrigues about Cid’s father’s past there and the hunt for Sandra, the love of Cid’s young life and mother of the son he never knew.  The author writes with flavor and sensual detail.  Occasionally, it slowed the story, but the reader is never truly bored.  Perhaps it’s only because we have so many questions and worries that we get frustrated when things don’t move forward quickly enough to satisfy the need to discover just what’s going to happen.

Overall, though, I recommend However Long the Night, not as a romance as it’s billed by the publisher, though there are romantic elements, but as a fascinating suspense with a Cuban flavor and a completely satisfying ending.

The fairy tale courtship did not turn into a happily-ever-after . . .

Not until her husband dropped dead, that is. He had been horrible enough to Christiana during their short marriage, and she was not going to allow the traditional period of mourning to ruin her sisters’ debuts as well. So she decides to put him on ice and go on as if nothing’s happened . . .

Until the real earl appears. Richard Fairgrave had every intention of confronting his villainous twin who had robbed him of his name and title . . . only to discover that he had died. Quietly assuming his identity, Richard must now deal with a maddening desire for his ravishing inherited “wife”— certainly a gold digger and possibly a murderess. And Christiana must deal with an unwanted new “husband” . . . and they both must figure out what to do before the ice melts!

If a reader is searching for a madcap comedic romance with more twists and turns than a pretzel, they can’t go wrong with this delightful and entertaining romp by Ms. Sands. The Countess kept me guessing and smiling all the way through.

The main crux of the story is two-fold. How can a woman overcome the degradation of her first husband’s cruelty and trust a man who looks just like him? How can a man overcome his need for revenge and learn to trust the woman he thinks might have killed his brother? Sounds heavy doesn’t it? Those are the initial dramatic threads that rope a reader in by instilling a ‘need to know’. That need is cemented by the creation of two wonderfully fascinating characters that truly are fun together.

Christiana’s initial reaction to seeing her dead husband alive was classically funny. Richard’s reaction at her seeing him was equally entertaining. What comes after, the slow discovery of who and what Christiana is really like was akin to watching a rose bloom – petal by petal unfurled to become a woman Richard is helpless to resist. It was the quality of writing that pulled it off to my satisfaction.

The truth will set you free, or so they say. In this story, the truth makes more conflict, more trouble, more plot twists and more hilarity than a reader would expect from the blurb alone. I had no idea that the cast of characters that Ms. Sands populated The Countess with would be so adorable, entertaining, and integral to the motivation and plot to the degree they are. I don’t think this book would have been as fully fleshed out if even one of the secondary characters was shoved into the background. They all played key roles in the humor of the story. Certainly when it came to figuring out who the villain was, they were indispensable.

Speaking of the villain, what an interesting bit of writing that was. Even though the guy was dead, he still managed to cause an inordinate amount of mayhem for the hapless couple. Add to that another wrinkle that I never saw coming and one that I highly suspected but wasn’t sure of until the great reveal. I enjoyed how Ms. Sands wove those threads throughout the book. It was a steady, low-level hum of drama and suspense that flavored this tale that kept me as fascinated as watching Richard and Christiana fall in love.

My favorite parts were when Christiana got drunk, looking for the “strawberry”, when Suzette described what she heard, which made the heroine blush and sent me into a giggle fit, and I got a kick out of Grace, Christiana’s maid. And how could I forget the scene when Richard was so overcome with passion he forgot which bed he dropped the heroine onto. Of course that scene was not only chock-full of sensual tension but it was quite important to the progression of their romance…and other things.

What made this story even better was the secondary romance going on between Richard’s best friend and Suzette. Plus I think there is another simmering. What I appreciated about them both was how the author handled the extra romance threads – they enhanced the main story and didn’t dilute it in the least.

The Countess is entertaining romance at its finest. The author’s writing kept the pace brisk, pertinent, and showcased the best of what historical romantic comedic fiction has to offer. The dialogue was incredibly important in helping me understand the main characters and their motivations. It highlighted their personalities and foibles and when they declared their love, it was sweet and spicy all at the same time. The Countess has so much going for it, and is written so well, it’s not only a keeper to be re-read but a book that is worth recommending to other reader friends and fans of funny historical romances. I’ve read Ms. Sands’ paranormals before but this was the first I’ve tried of her historicals. I guarantee that this will not be the last. This author is very talented!
