Life in the small tri-states town of Clover, AR-LA-TX, was wonderful until the year 1960; then heartaches of the worse kind led the young guitarist, Annie Jo, to catch a Greyhound bus headed to the city lights of Memphis, TN—there she might be discovered by a talent scout. While riding through Arkansas, she tries to ignore the handsome man giving her more attention than he should. And soon action starts to pop. Annie Jo joins with members of the Civil Rights movement, gets stalked by a drunk, jailed, and kidnapped—all on her 18th birthday.

Today is the big day and Annie Jo is eagerly awaiting the arrival of six PM. Upon that magical hour, she’ll be officially eighteen. In celebration, she’s decided to pack up all that is important to her and hit the bus station – with a one way ticket out of her sleepy little town. Unfortunately, the universe has more in store for her than just a simple bus ride from Texarkana to Memphis. It’s never quite that easy though, is it? Welcome to adulthood, Annie Jo, better hold onto your hat!

Annie Jo is a pretty uncomplicated character and her simplicity makes her endearing and likable from the start. Even while nursing a broken heart and carrying around the weight of things she can’t change, she still manages to look life in the eye and see it for what it is – a rollercoaster ride of emotion and experience. Annie’s a small town girl and it shows. She does the right thing for no other reason than because it’s right. However, her small town outlook does lean towards naiveté at times, only reinforcing her innocence. Furthermore, it also places them with a large glass of water before 30 to 45 online viagra order minutes of intercourse. One can easily approach this drug to overcome ED issue. free viagra india order viagra online How does smoking influence erection quality? This is the most important aspects of looking for the appropriate treatment is how quick you can react when the time is correct for a sexual encounter. Also, the costliest might not mean that that is the best way to a sildenafil price in india natural penis enlargement. Sometimes this makes her even more likable and sometimes it makes you shake your head. But she’s always true to herself and that’s a big part of why she’s so interesting.

I enjoyed the way the author told Annie Jo’s story leading up to her decision to leave Clover. She makes the flashbacks into instances of daydreaming while traveling on the bus. It was a creative and non-intrusive way to give us the back story we needed without slapping us in the face with it. I was also very impressed with the way she incorporated Annie Jo’s awakening social consciousness into the story without making it overtly obvious she was doing so. There were two issues I did have with the story. One was the sometimes simplistic sentence structure and the other being the too often repeated descriptions and phrasing. However, it wasn’t enough to completely distract you from the story, only slightly hindering your enjoyment for the moment.

My 18th Birthday is a great coming-of-age story set in the very turbulent times of the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement. It brings the trials of the times front and center and shows you how one courageous, if a bit naïve girl, might have handled the situation. So much is packed into the twenty-four hours of Annie Jo’s birthday, that you really have to read it to believe it.

It came to the diner looking for a soul to devour.

At a late-night diner, the manager finds himself faced with a nightmare from his past: The Nalusachita, a mythical-creature of his Choctaw ancestors.

Determined to protect his customers from the shape-changing soul-stealer but unsure how, the manager sets out to clear the restaurant at closing time.

What neither manager or monster counted on was the eccentric patrons of the diner, and how they would react to the mythical creature…

Soul-Stealer, table for one…

Working night shift at a restaurant could be exciting if someone caused trouble, but it was mostly boring. Tonight it was full of regulars and getting close to time to close. Then the Soul-Stealer came in and sat down…

Mr. Merriam writes a short story with a bite to it. He combines fantasy and myth and sets the danger level at high. It didn’t take me very long to read this because I was glued to the pages. I’m sure you won’t stop until you’ve reached the end of the story either.

The Nalusachita is a mythical creature from the main character’s Choctaw ancestors’ time. He’s already had one run in with it ten years ago. It’s in a different form, but he recognizes it. Recognizing the monster is one thing. Different Types professional viagra Of Treatment A simple treatment from the doctor for it. The author does an excellent job of describing the odd characters that frequent the restaurant late at night. They seem strange and a bit off the wall, but they don’t bother anyone. With just a few words and a change of nuance the familiar begin to look different. They are more than they seemed… That hooked me. This isn’t going to be a tale where the main character is the hero, there’s more to the story than that. So I kept reading…

One man always has a chat with his friend, even though he’s invisible. One lady likes origami and makes sand cranes. The seen and the unseen work together to fight the supernatural creature there to end someone’s life. It’s a twisted tangled tale that’s a bit creepy, plenty busy, interesting and entertaining.

Why not buy a copy of this novella and sit down for a good scare? How the story ends is even more interesting and I’ll be watching for more from this author. I like his writing style.

INTERVIEW: LINDA JOY SINGLETON

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Linda Joy Singleton, whose latest release Buried: a Goth Girl Mystery is a spin-off from The Seer series starting Goth Girl Thorn from Flux.

“In the second Seer, Last Dance, Thorn’s strong character was starting to take over the story,” Linda told me. “I purposely kept her out of most of the next books in The Seer series. But when my publisher wanted to end The Seer, but continue on with the character Thorn, I gave her a big storyline in the final Seer book, Magician’s Muse. One scene in particular, where a ditzy girl is holding the weapon in a murder much to the shock of Thorn, struck me as so funny when I wrote this scene that I burst out laughing. Also, I went to Nevada for research for Buried which is always fun. My publisher wanted the spin-off to have a new setting and since my family often goes to Reno, I chose that area for my story, although the town of Nevada Bluff’s is totally fiction; based on the area between Reno and Carson City.”

Her publisher, Flux, is waiting to see how the sales of Buried go before offering her a contract on a series, Linda is going ahead with another book about Goth Girl Thorn titled Reaper.

“This one is more romantic and a road trip involving a missing girl, an impersonator, a seance and a zombie dance. I’ve written nearly 100 pages so far and am just having fun writing without a looming deadline,” she said.

She told me that she never considered whether she wanted to write or not, she just wrote because it’s part of who she is. She feels driven to write, as if she was born to create stories. She still has stories she wrote when she was nine years old; words were like toys to her.

“I wrote poems, short stories, forced my siblings to act our plays I wrote and played a ‘pick a random title’ writing game with my best friend,” she remembered. “I submitted my first work at age fourteen and received very encouraging rejections. I’ve never had a writing class, though, as my school didn’t offer it and I worked instead of going to college, so I taught myself through writing, reading and joining writing groups. I sold my first book at age thirty.”

She first considered herself an “author” though when she discovered she had sold an article to a local magazine.

“At my critique group one friend asked why I hadn’t told her I’d sold to this magazine, and she showed me my published article — days before I got the official letter and check. I’ll never forget that first payment: $17.50. I almost didn’t want to cash it…but of course I did,” she said with a grin.

When she was young, she loved mysteries like Joan Lowery Nixon, Lois Duncan, Phyllis Whitney, Victoria Holt, and younger mysteries like Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden, but it was the Judy Bolton series by Margaret Sutton that was special.

“It touched my heart in such a way that the characters felt like family to me. I wrote a fan letter to Margaret Sutton at age thirteen and not only did she reply but she encouraged my writing. When I was an adult, we co-write a new Judy Bolton mystery together titled The Talking Snowman.”

She noticed that some YAs coming out remind her a lot of the adult romantic suspense novels she read by Victoria Holt, making her think that the YA market has blended with the adult market in a way.

“Lois Duncan’s real life account of her daughter’s murder in Who Killed My Daughter haunts me to this day, and is perhaps the reason I wanted to write about psychic characters. The real account of psychics and foretelling of terrible things in Duncan’s book are fascinating and heart-breaking,” she told me.

Linda usually starts with an interesting plot situation, then she grows the character from the conflict in the journey—pitting characters against each other or as allies for the changes ahead. For Buried, since Thorn is independent and shuns society, Linda matched her with a guy who is part of society, yet secretly fights for justice as a vigilante, so they have reasons to be friends as well as enemies. She also gave Thorn the conflict of wanting her family’s respect, while at the same time needing to express her individuality. Thorn also has friends who are like her, so there are people she can trust.

“Each character comes out of the need to conflict/enhance other characters and ultimately the overall plot,” she explained.

“What do you envision happening in the YA field in the next five to ten years?” I wondered.

“I have no idea — things have been changing so fast. YA books were almost dead in the mid-90’s when I wrote Sweet Dreams teen romances. These books about sixteen year olds with eighteen year olds on the covers were targeted to ten-fourteen year olds. Now that market would be called tween or even middle-grade. My The Seer series, which was first published in 2004, is younger in tone and style than most YA novels now. Readership of YA novels isn’t limited to teens. I think the world is such a complicated place that adults turn to the genre they loved as teens for comfort reads. Or they simply recognize the quality of the genre with books like Hunger Games, Graceling, Matched, and Girl of Fire and Thorn. This is a golden age for teen books. Will it last another five or ten years? Probably but with less books from conventional publishing and more from online publishers.”
Linda loves playing with titles, but many of them get changed during the editorial process so she’s learned not to get too attached to them. The Seer was submitted as Psychic Sleuth. Another series, Regeneration, was originally going to be called Sci-Clones.

“Sometimes I am pleased with editorial title decisions, and other times not so much,” she admitted. “But editors get the final decision and part of being a professional is accepting editorial changes gracefully.”

When Linda was a little girl, she always admired homes with second stories.

“Stories, I guess, is a theme with me,” she said with a grin, “and I can never get enough—fictional or architectural.”

They built their own home, and her husband designed an upstairs office for her which opens from the staircase and has a turret-type corner with lots of windows.

The pace and style of writing switches from fast and furious through sweet, sensual to spicy with a fluency and visual impact that drew me in. I read this through in one sitting; the author pulled me in and had me rooting for both her main characters.

While every romance is about emotions, Ms. Dee’s presentation of Cooper’s emotions when Galynn keeps her promise to let him know when she’s leaving is awesome. I appreciated the manner in which the author includes background information, thus breaking up the tension.

While the bad guy was thoroughly bad, Ms. Dee’s conclusion and resolution to the conflict was both unexpected and liberating.

I found Ms. Dee’s writing fluent and enjoyable and she is an author now on my ‘watch-for’ list.

Mission: Build a new life. Confront the past. Plan the wedding of the man she loves.

Tulle and Tulips, Book 1

Lori Mullins yearns to shake off her past and live free of shadows and fear. Yet her only shot at obtaining the capital to launch her business rests in a man she met during a lie. A man whose voice alone turned her from jaded escort to giddy schoolgirl. A man who almost died because of her.

Trevor Masters can call off his search for the woman he loves. The woman he dreamt of while comatose. The quest for her heart, however, is only beginning. The trick will be convincing her he doesn’t blame her—and that she deserves to accept herself as the woman who holds his heart.

Business negotiations land Lori in a heavenly hell. Heaven that Trevor is close enough to touch. Hell that she’s planning her first designer wedding. His. And something’s not quite right. The kind, compassionate man she fell for all those months ago, the man who’s engaged to another, seems intent on wooing her…

The past can come back to haunt a former call girl. What can be more tortuous than having to plan the wedding of the man she loves when he’s marrying someone else and she can’t explain to him about her past?

Lori Mullins sets up shop to be a wedding planner, makes a business proposal to former client (who she had many passionate moments with) for funding and winds up planning his wedding. Lori has a secret she must keep because her past was not all it seemed to be. She dreads the upcoming meeting with his fiancée since she’s heartbroken he’s marrying someone else.

Trevor Masters is a successful businessman who has the means to provide funding for Lori’s new venture. He was almost killed when he was involved with Lori, unwittingly becoming a pawn for Lori’s former boss. Trevor seems to still be taken with Lori, yet he’s engaged to be married to someone else.

The story is very focused on the turmoil Lori goes through with trying to keep her past concealed and keeping herself out of Trevor’s reach. She keeps reminding herself that her secret almost got Trevor killed and she has to let him go. Trevor keeps up his pursuit of Lori and provides a surprising twist to the story. I loved the premise and the twist in the story even though I kind of saw it coming.

For an erotic story, this is a bit on the conservative side, not that it’s a bad thing. It’s a great story for those who usually read regular romance stories and are venturing into the erotic side. More action details in Lori’s flashbacks would have helped break up the stretches of reflecting and worrying on her part. Having Trevor be more present in the story might also have helped with getting to know him better and to break up Lori’s contemplation. Overall, this was still an enjoyable read.

I wonder now if Ms. Duncan will be writing a sequel with Lori’s best friend Misty as the heroine? If you are looking for a well written sexy short story about lovers with secrets from their past, be sure to look for Tangled in Tulle.

It’s Regan’s seventeenth birthday, and her sister has just picked her up from school to take her to a “surprise” birthday dinner with their single father. Soon, however, Regan realizes she’s been lured not to the Grouper Grille, but to a hotel conference room, where her best friend Ava, her Dad, and Freddy Fields, the hottie thug from her sixth period shop class, are all waiting.

Could it be? Why, yes, it is . . . an intervention!

Suddenly, Regan sees lights and cameras and . . . is that Hunter Hazard, host of the Scream Channel’s top-rated reality show Monster-Vention?

But why are they here? Regan’s family reminds her about the bloody clothes in the washing machine, the chewed up sneaker on their lawn, and the teenage girls who have gone missing in their sleepy little town of Crescent Cove, South Carolina. The clues are piling up, and they all point to a conclusion Regan doesn’t want to accept. Could she really be a werewolf?

Is Regan really a werewolf, or is she being framed?

First, I have to give Mr. Fischer credit for coming up with such an attention grabbing title. My curiosity was instantly piqued. After reading the blurb, I expected the story to be full of werewolves and humor, and I certainly found those things within the pages of this book. However, I was surprised to discover that My Big, Fat, Hairy Werewolf Intervention is much more than a book about monsters. Beneath the paranormal trappings, is a story of a seemingly normal family falling apart at the seams.

Regan is a teenager spiraling out of control. Her home life is a wreck, school isn’t much better, and she’s even distancing herself from her best friend, Ava. I could tell she was hurting on the inside, but she covers it all up with a smart mouth and loads of attitude. I couldn’t help but shake my head and sigh. As I read, I certainly felt she needed some sort of intervention, but like Regan, I thought the notion that she could be a werewolf and not know it utterly ridiculous. I completely understood her frustration as she’s forced to listen to her friends and family level preposterous accusations at her. Despite the absurdity of her situation, I think Regan handles it all very well. I found it especially entertaining when something completely serious would be going on and a thought about how hot Freddie was would flit through her mind.

As bizarre as the monster-vention seemed, a lot of painful truths came out concerning Regan and her family. Regan has tons of issues concerning her mom’s abandonment, and she can hardly stand to be in the same room as her sister, Sara. I must admit I have serious issues concerning Regan’s parents. I cannot give much detail concerning that situation without spoiling the story. However, I will say something very sinister is happening in Regan’s small town, and Regan’s father has some well founded suspicions concerning the culprit. I found it extremely disturbing that Regan’s father would have such grave concerns and not take greater steps to protect his family. Rather than rallying to protect those he loves, he just lets things happen. I couldn’t help but wonder how many more years would go by and how many girls in town would have to go missing before he would do something about it.

The bulk of the book is spent discussing the broken dynamics of Regan’s family, and I began to wonder if the werewolves mentioned in the prologue were ever going to make an appearance. However, once the werewolves finally show up, the pacing of the story really picks up. The end of the story is filled with big revelations and intense battles. I must warn readers that the transformations of the werewolves as well as the wounds inflicted on the humans are described in graphic detail, and probably shouldn’t be read by someone who is squeamish.

My Big, Fat, Hairy Werewolf Intervention is a good read. The premise of the story is interesting, and Regan is an odd, but ultimately likable character. Readers looking for a young adult paranormal with a bite might want to give this story a try.

She flees after Philip joins her in an imaginary waltz, but the attraction between them is undeniable. He finds her again, a warm friendship ensues and they share a kiss beneath the mistletoe. Then his spiteful former love arrives, determined to win him again.

Madeleine and Philip’s happiness rests on the power of a Christmas kiss.

I was charmed by this delightful read-in-one-sitting Christmas regency. I found the story fun, but I particularly liked Madeleine Charlton. She’s the type of girl I’d enjoy having as a friend—adventurous without being foolish, talented yet truly humble, bright without flaunting it, and strong-willed yet willing to admit she’s wrong. In regency terms, she is truly “without artifice.” She’s the kind of girl who deserves a happily-ever-after.

Turns out I was wrong. It was her son Toby who caused all the trouble. Sometimes even to such an extent I wondered how such a good mother ended up with such an unmanageable child. It took almost the whole book before I warmed up to him.

The author paints a very vivid background for her setting, and her secondary characters are, in their individual ways, charming.

The hero, Grant Carrington has a reputation to live down, and trust becomes a big divider between them. Coupled with Jami’s need to retain her self-sufficiency, they were in for a trial.

This, the first in Ms. Rigley’s CupidKey series, is a delightful story that builds steadily, with the hero and heroine overcoming several setbacks, to a charming and unusual ending.

What JC wants JC gets, and she wants Hunter no matter what.

Hunter Brooks has spent the last decade staying as far away from the Sherman family and Jacinda Sherman as possible. No matter how much Hunter might want Jacinda, honor dictates a man doesn’t go near a best friend’s baby sister. But now, she is safely married so all should be safe. Can Hunter pay J.C.’s price and still come out on top?

Her whole life, Jacinda Sherman let everyone tell her what she can and cannot have. That includes Hunter. Now she’s grown up, divorced, and what J.C. wants J.C. gets. This time, Hunter won’t be leaving without J.C. getting what she desires.

Can these two lovers find a way to live happily ever after? Or will life throw a wrench in their carefully laid plans?

Hunter has always appreciated Jacinda for the bookish nerd she used to be. Years have passed since he’s seen her and what he sees now is a whole lot of trouble. His appreciation of her now would not be welcome by her brothers. In fact, it would cause tension in a family who took him in as one of their own. It’s just too bad the new and improved “J.C.” didn’t get the same memo.

In a last ditch attempt to make Hunter see her as the woman she has grown to be, Jacinda uses all the feminine wiles in her arsenal to tempt him. She knows it’s a do or die seduction situation and if she can’t change Hunter’s mind, then her dreams of forever with him will be crushed for good. Doesn’t mean she won’t take him for a ride if that’s all he’s willing to give, but the situation turns critical when photos of them in compromising positions appear and threats against Hunter’s business turn deadly.

Conflicted over how to handle their growing feelings, Hunter and J.C. are forced to make some drastic decisions that will hurt their loved ones. What they didn’t anticipate was hurting each other.

Hunting J.C. is the first in a series about a meddling but loveable family, where the children are challenged in the love department. J.C., being the youngest Sherman and the only female, sheds her good girl existence and surgically enhances her appearance to appease a husband who is now her ex. Her personality is at times temperamental, but I appreciated that she is the initial aggressor in starting a relationship with Hunter. While Hunter may come across as a bit of a playboy, he’s still a good-guy at heart. The Sherman family trusts him implicitly. Hunter and J.C. do have haunted pasts that have shaped the people they are in the present, but it also fuels explosions in both passion and anger.

The storyline demands attention of the reader with the couple’s intense ups and downs, but the mystery portion fell a bit flat with a rushed ending. However, I was still compelled to continue Hunter and J.C.’s journey as it took on unexpected detours even at the end. The writing is visually clear and contains great combinations of humor, anger, and passion, so it should be no surprise I’m absolutely looking forward to my next Sherman family fix!
