My Favorite Thief and Bad Guy Movies by Andrew Grey – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Andrew Grey who is celebrating yesterday’s release of Fire and Obsidian, the fourth book in his Carlisle Deputies series.

I love cops but I also love movies from the other side of the spectrum. So here are some of my favorite thief and bad guy movies.

1) Oceans 8 – I love this movie where the ladies are the thieves and kiss butt

2) Thomas Crown Affair – This is just an amazing movie.

3) Oceans 11 – This movie is clever and I didn’t see the twist coming! Always the best.

4) The Godfather Movies. – I just love these and watch them over and over, especially the first two.

5) Goodfellas – I love the first 2/3 of the movie a lot. The rest I can take or leave.

Can a couple be more opposite than a thief and a cop? Or do they have more in common than they think?

Mattias stole to survive. He was damn good at it. But there’s no such thing as a victimless crime, and when he saw how his theft hurt people, he resolved to change. Now he works as a consultant, and while helping to investigate a rash of burglaries, he crosses paths with James.

Police Officer James Levinson doesn’t trust thieves, and that includes Mattias. James’s father stole to support himself, and James knows firsthand how that can destroy lives—it inspired him to go into law enforcement. Mattias is no different, from what he can tell… at first.

As they work together, Mattias and James realize there’s something deeper between them than just the physical attraction neither can deny. Given time, they might even grow to trust each other—unless the case they’re working on dredges up pasts both would rather forget.

“All right. Everyone stand up, please,” Mattias said calmly. “Someone identify an object that you want me to take.”

One of the officers held up a watch. It was plain and nothing that would ever have interested him during his career, but for demonstration purposes, it would do.

“Perfect. Put that back on, and I’ll demonstrate. I’d like you all to stay standing as I attempt to take the watch.” Mattias cleared his throat and pretended to think about how he was going to proceed. He wandered up and down each aisle, working his way over to the officer in question, who stood near the back, in the far aisle, with another officer in front and in back of him.

As he got closer, he nodded to the officer, whose gaze locked on to him. Mattias could almost feel his quarry’s heart rate increase the closer he got. This man knew something was going to happen, and he was prepared for it. Mattias turned the corner, anticipation building in the room, so thick that he could taste it. Every eye was on either him or his quarry, which was fine. Mattias was calm and cool, no worries. As he got closer, his quarry’s arm jittered slightly. Mattias watched it for a second and then lifted his head, meeting the gaze of the men and women around him. Passing by his quarry, Mattias smiled and continued back up to the front of the room.

“I still have the watch,” the officer said, holding up his wrist, and the others in the room clapped.

“I guess you aren’t as good as you thought.”

Mattias waited until the ruckus and self-congratulations died down and they all turned back to him. He cleared his throat. “And you are?” It was best to confront this type of adversary head-on.

“Detective James Levinson. I’m working with the sheriff’s department as a consultant on the robberies in the area.” His steely gaze held Mattias’s, and he didn’t look away. It was a test of wills, and Mattias enjoyed it, especially from the stunning man who made his body temperature rise and his heart beat a little faster just from the intensity in his eyes. This was a man who didn’t back down from a fight and who held tightly to his convictions. Mattias’s lips curled upward. He got the feeling that this was also a man who never admitted he was wrong. Good. Mattias liked that.

Mattias was going to love making him eat his words.

“Let’s see. Being a good thief is about doing what isn’t expected.” He reached into his pocket, pulled out a wallet, and opened it. “Pierre Ravelle.” He smiled and held up the wallet. “I believe this is yours.” The others in the room snickered as Pierre approached and accepted his wallet back. “No hard feelings,” Mattias said as he handed it over.

Pierre blushed slightly and returned to his seat. “Come on, guys,” Pierre said, to try to stop their razzing.

“Pierre isn’t alone.” Mattias began emptying the inner pockets of his jacket of their contents, including one more wallet, a pair of handcuffs, and a flashlight, as well as half a dozen other things. “Check to see what you’re missing and come up to retrieve it in a moment,” Mattias said, then slowly reached into an inner pocket, close to his body. He used his fingertips to pull out the service revolver and gently lay it on the table.

The room went silent, with each officer checking his belt.

“Detective Levinson, I believe this belongs to you.”

Top Five Things I wish I’d Known Before I Was Published by Angel Martinez – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Angel Martinez who is visiting with us today to celebrate yesterday’s release of Mage on the Hill, the first book in The Web of Arcana series.

Top Five Things I wish I’d Known Before I Was Published

Ha! How about everything? I started seeking publication in the late ’90’s, when submissions were all snail mail and I knew NOTHING. My mistakes were legion. But top five would have been:

1. How to write a query letter

The query is that first contact, the first piece of paper an acquisitions editor sees. These days, it serves as the body of your email and the purpose is straightforward: pique the editor’s interest in your story. Some of my early query letters are just awful pretentious nonsense and I only pull them out so I can cringe at early author me.

2. How to punctuate modern dialogue

Hey, when I went to college, there were no MFA’s in Creative Writing. You got your degree in English Lit or in Journalism and you were happy with it. Now you kids get off my lawn. Seriously, though, this isn’t something any of my English teachers taught, in high school or in college. It just didn’t come up. I had to learn, through tons of mistakes, how the mechanics of dialogue work—beats vs. tags, how to break up a sentence with an action, and when not to, where the commas went instead of periods. Gah.

3. What a cover should look like

Honestly, I had no idea. With some publishers, you’re handed a cover as a fait accompli. You may get to make requests beforehand, but once it’s done, it’s done. With others, you get to work with the artist—and I had no clue. Negative integers of clues with no idea if something looked good or how to explain it if something didn’t seem right. Nor did I realize I really had a valid voice in those discussions until later. Again-gah.

4. What a legitimate publisher looks like

It’s not quite as difficult now. The internet makes researching publishers much easier these days. But back then, I was often sitting on the floor of the public library with the latest Writers Digest, trying to find addresses for publishers who might, possibly, conceivably want to look at my work. Without good, targeted criteria, I got a lot of rejections. A Staples paper box full, if you must know. So when a publisher finally sent a letter of acceptance, I was ready to sign that second, in blood. This turned out to be a terrible mistake. Four times. Boy, did I not know things.

5. Why you should do Amazon searches of proposed book titles

Holy buried novel, Batman. This is so important. Want people to find your books? Don’t give it a title that three million authors have used before you, regardless of genre, especially when you’re just starting out. Yeesh.

A young magic user who wants desperately to live. A jaded recluse who has forgotten what living means. They’re each other’s only chance.

Toby’s wild magic is killing him. The mage guilds have given up on him, and it’s only a matter of time before he dies in a spectacular, catastrophic bang. His only hope is an exiled wizard who lives in seclusion—and is rumored to have lost his mind.

The years alone on his hilltop estate have not been good for Darius Valstad. After the magical accident that disfigured him and nearly drowned Pittsburgh, he drifts through his days, a wraith trapped in memories and depression. Until a stricken young man collapses on his driveway, one who claims Darius is his last chance. For the first time in fifteen years, Darius must make a choice—leave this wild mage to his fate or take him in and try to teach him, which may kill them both. The old Darius, brash and commanding, wouldn’t have hesitated. Darius the exile isn’t sure he can find the energy to try.

Enjoy an Excerpt

It’s killing him. We have to end this.

Too cruel to force him to keep struggling.

I don’t understand. He should be finding a minor channel at least. Something. He shouldn’t be at this level of physical distress and still be able to throw so much.

We can’t condone pushing on. Dangerous for him and for everyone in a five-mile radius. We’ll have another Darius situation on our hands.

You’ll tell him?

As soon as he’s able to hear it, yes.

Toby drifted from gray misery to scarlet agony, the voices floating to him in fits and starts. His instructors, the director—they were talking about him and they sounded done with him, just like the previous six guilds that had tossed him to the curb. Wild magic. Unplaceable on the web of Arcana. Unsustainable and eventually deadly. The only remaining bets anyone could make now were how many people he took with him when he went out with a catastrophic bang.
Hands lifted him. The familiar sensations of stretcher and rolling followed him down into the dark.

“What’s this?” Toby peered at the papers on the rolling tray, not quite up to focusing through his pounding headache.

The director pulled a chair close and cleared his throat uncomfortably. “We discussed that this might be a possibility someday, Tobias.”

“We’ve talked about a bunch of stuff.”
I think I don’t need to define about this problem. order levitra online It is a quite a dreadful situation for those people who suffer viagra properien from this problem. Director Whittaker let out a sharp sigh.

“Not saying it to be a smartass, sir. I can’t get my eyes to read this just yet.” Toby shifted on the infirmary bed. His fifth stay in this wing of the guildhall and the mattresses hadn’t managed to grow any more comfortable. “Couple hours I should be able to.”

“Ah. My apologies.” The director returned to a concerned parental pose, hands clasped between his knees as he leaned forward. “These are your separation papers from the Montchanin Guildhall.”

Toby swallowed hard. “You’re giving up on me? Already?”

“I’m so sorry, Tobias.” Director Whittaker patted his arm. “The Kovar method is nearly infallible—”

“Nearly. You said nearly.” Despite his pounding head, Toby sat up, hanging on to the director’s hand as hard as he could. “Please don’t do this. You said you’d help me.”

“We said we would do the best we could. Wild magic…. It’s unusual, certainly, but cases of unplaceable wild magic like yours aren’t unheard of. We should have seen some sign of channeling by now. Some directed trickle that would have let us help you find your place in the web.”

Toby let go to fall back against the pillows, hurting, nauseated, and dizzy. His uncontrolled magical explosions, each one harder on him than the time before, had only been getting more volatile and unpredictable. “I don’t have anywhere else to go. Can’t I stay here? Until, well, until….”

“It’s too dangerous for the other students. For the staff and other guild members.” Director Whittaker took his hand again. “Tobias, you blew a hole in the guidance room’s wall today.”

Ten feet of weapons-grade Kevlar and steel—that shouldn’t have been possible. Holy crap. “Did I hurt anyone?”

“Not today. But I can’t risk lives any further. It’s reached that point where we’ve tried everything we could. When you feel up to it, read the packet. There are several wonderful hospice options nearby. Beautiful places where you’ll be cared for and made comfortable. The guild will take care of you and cover any expenses.”

Drugged to the eyeballs so I won’t do any more damage. Allowed to starve to death in the nicest possible surroundings. Toby closed his eyes, his exhausted brain banging up against walls of possibility, trying to find him a way out. All this time he’d been sure one of the guilds would find a way. They were the experts. Now? Now he was terrified. The experts were telling him he needed to accept his impending death. No, no, no, fuck that. “Sir, who’s Darius?”

“Ah, you heard that, did you?” The director sat back and pulled out a microfiber cloth to give his glasses a meticulous cleaning before he went on. “Darius Valstad caused one of the greatest magical disasters in recent memory. He nearly destroyed Pittsburgh. He pulled magic too far from his channelings, the result much like a wild magic accident. The catastrophe was narrowly averted.”

“Oh. That sounds about as bad as it gets. What happened to him?”

“He nearly died. His guild status was revoked, his teaching of any more students forbidden.”

Toby turned that over a few times, his brain fumbling and dropping concepts along the way. “So, but he’s still alive?”

“As far as I know. He lives in isolation, oh, not far from here, with the promise that he will no longer attempt anything beyond personal magic.”

“But he was once like me? And he lived?” Toby knew it was conclusion jumping, but he was desperate enough to reach for anything.

The director’s sigh was slower this time, more melancholy. “Tobias, he found his channels long ago, both his major and minor Arcana. Yes, he lives because as long as he respects the web, his magic won’t tear him apart. He had some early success with teaching unplaceables, but Pittsburgh was the ultimate result of his unorthodox methods.”

“Yes, sir. Of course.”

Director Whittaker rose with one last pat to Toby’s shoulder. “Get some rest. We’ll talk again in the morning. Please keep in mind we’re not simply turning you out onto the street. We want to be certain you’re looked after properly.”

Toby nodded, no longer trusting his voice. He didn’t turn his head to watch the director leave, staring at the white ceiling tiles instead. Ugly ceiling tiles. Places where you have to lie in bed like hospitals and infirmaries should have nice ceilings with meadows and bunnies painted on them. I don’t want to die. Oh gods… I don’t want to die.

Five Things I Need to Write by Royal Blue – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Royal Blue who is celebrating today’s release of Kyle’s Reveal, the first book in the My Brother’s Keeper Collection. Leave a comment or ask the author a question for a chance to win a copy of the book.

*****

I have a list of my top 5 Need to Have in order to write books.

1. My earbuds and Music

I have to have my earbuds. The hilarious part is sometimes they’re not even playing anything. I just need to feel them in place. Don’t judge. LOL This keeps people from talking to me when I’m in the middle of a scene that’s flowing. Especially when I’m out in public.

You would think my face of complete concentration and my fingers flying across the keys would stop all interruptions and unwanted conversations, but no. Total strangers will come and ask all about what I’m writing.

I promise you one day I’m going to let them read for themselves right when I’m writing a stream scene. (Laughs maniacally.)

I also need my ear buds for when I need some music to help set a pace or to get me out of my own head.

Oh, and because I’m married to a music producer and when he needs to mix down a track he listens to his music out loud and sometimes it turns into the clash of the titans in here. LOL So my earbuds cancel out the extra sound when he’s working.

2. Post Cards

I have post cards everywhere. If you ever want to gift me something, I’d be so freaking in love with you for giving me 4×6 post cards. ROTF. Yup, it’s that serious. I use them to work timelines, facts I know I need to get into the book, my guides for the characters themselves. I even have a stack of them in need to write order. So all the books I have in my head to write next are on post cards in order for what’s up next.

No judging, remember.

3. Notebooks

You would think my post cards are enough. They’re not. I have notebooks as well. Because I like to hook, weave, and intertwine my books and series, I keep facts and notes in the notebooks pre-series. I can just grab the notebook I need and find the details I want. I buy them by the bunch from Michael’s. You know the cute 120 pages ones with the quotes on the front.

For example, the My Brother’s Keeper Series has its own notebook. Last names, eye colors, professions, and names of their love interests are just some of the things in there.

I had to start doing this once I got to over 30 books and over 15 series. Not to mention, 2 pen names.

Stress is the generic india viagra major factor that causes such problem. Some vital points of this medication have been mentioned below:Benefits of Kumara* A cheap drug to treat erectile dysfunction* FDA approved* Available in many versions* Executes well to supply best results* Quickly works to give firm erection* generic cialis Can be ordered online* Less price for high quality medicationExecution of Kamagra 100 Tablets This oral medication belongs to PDE-5 inhibitor family. Although there is no scientific evidence that any of deeprootsmag.org order cialis online the ingredients can really help improve orgasm quality. Since a very long time, deeprootsmag.org order levitra online products have been demanding by thousands of thousands males suffering from different types of erection problems. 4. TV Playing in the Background

If you haven’t figured out that I’m weird, I’ll confirmation that for you with this on. Soooo I like for the TV to play in the background. It’s something about the movement on the screen and sometimes the sound of the TV that keeps me in the zone.

Before I changed cable companies I used to be up in the wee hours of the morning with GI Joe, the Smurfs, Alvin and The Chipmunks, and Transformers, playing while I wrote. I was in heaven. Totally need to go back to my old cable company. LOL

5. Willing Characters

My characters have to show up. I will not fight to force something I hate. If the characters aren’t ready and don’t want to bloom that’s a problem. I have to give them room and figure them out then we can go at it. I love when they come in hot and ready. LOL When they reveal who they are and what their goals are. It’s the best.

Although, we fight the entry time and they always get their way. Sigh, I like to think I run things. They laugh at me. It’s okay.

Some scars are on the body, while others exist only on the heart. But together, two scarred souls can find healing, love, and family.

Professional basketball player Kyle Tyson is suffocating beneath the weight of his responsibilities and his past. Childhood abuse left its mark, as did Kyle’s guilt over his sister’s death. Now, he’s trying to raise his young nephew, pursue his career, and dodge a narcissistic and manipulative ex who wants to out Kyle before he’s ready.

Schoolteacher Andy Connor found a shield in food as a boy, but that shield nearly took his life. He now bears the marks of a botched skin-tightening surgery following the dramatic weight loss that saved his life. Unfortunately, Andy’s scars have left him insecure about his body, causing him to find a shield in his shyness. Andy can scarcely believe someone like Kyle could be interested in him. But as they get to know each other, Andy starts to see himself through new eyes. Now if he can just help Kyle learn to love himself as much as Andy is growing to love him.

About the Author: The color blue is known for trust and healing, as are the words of author Royal Blue. Blue started writing books to heal herself after losing her mother to breast cancer in 2007, followed by a miscarriage only eight months later. Books and words were one of the things that held her together.

As a young girl, Blue’s mother introduced her to the world of love and music through movies like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Bye Bye Birdie, and Neptune’s Daughter. Once she got her hands on books that sucked her into the magic that pages bring, an authoress was born. A story here, a few songs there, but she actually didn’t complete a manuscript until 2009.

However, books were piling up and collecting dust as fear clung and whispered evil thoughts. Yet, fear was silenced in 2015. Needing to write in order to breathe and wanting to share, Blue Saffire, Royal’s alter ego, rose from the ashes and entered the world.

The self-proclaimed hermit was born in Far Rockaway, NY, but is now a Long Island resident with her loving and supportive husband. The two work round the clock creating music and characters. There is no shortage of laughter or creativity in their home.

Never in a million years did she think the passion that saved her sanity would allow her to walk around with blue hair and spend her days dreaming of hot men to put on paper. After all, an MBA in Marketing and Project Management, as well as a MED in Curriculum Design and Instructional Technology, tell a very different story. Although, it’s safe to say Royal would rather be doing something Blue with her time.

Favorite Ways to Travel by Mickie B. Ashling – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Mickie B. Ashling, who is celebrating the release of the second edition of Impacted!. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win a $20.00 DSP Gift Card.

*****

Thank you for hosting the blog tour for the second edition of Impacted! This novel was originally published in 2009 when I was new on the scene. It was my first foray into BDSM, and I admit there was a lot I didn’t know about the men and women who live the lifestyle. Nonetheless, it was surprisingly well received, and continues to draw new readers. This second edition offers a gorgeous new cover designed by Kanaka along with extensive edits for a more enjoyable reading experience. The characters who populate this universe are dental and medical professionals living in San Francisco. You’re probably thinking dentistry can’t possibly be sexy—but my guys are! I hope you’ll give them a try.

I was asked to talk about my favorite vacation destination but it’s difficult to choose only one location. There are so many countries I’ve lived in or visited, and each one has something special to offer. I thought I’d share my preferred method of travel instead. This mainly applies to foreign destinations.

Bus tours are extremely hectic but a good value if you want to see a lot in a short period of time. In 2013, I went on a three-week bus tour through the UK, Scotland, and Ireland with an online friend. She was one of my dedicated fanfic readers, and when I mentioned my plans, and asked if she’d like to join me, she said yes. We hadn’t met in person before but, fortunately, we got along very well and the trip was a success. I say hectic because you’re on a fixed schedule, and you need to keep up with the other members of your group, or you’ll end up with a bunch of irate travelers, or even worse, miss an important highlight of the tour if the bus leaves you behind. I did another bus tour with the same company last winter (2018) but as a solo passenger this time. If you’re single or can’t find a traveling companion, I recommend this form of travel. You’re never really alone, unless you want to be, and the tour company makes sure to include you in all the events whether you’re paired or not. Since it was a winter tour, the price was half what it would be during the summer months, and there were no lines. The only downside was the weather. It snowed on several occasions, and this caused a few plane delays, but most of the places we visited were indoors, so the elements weren’t much of an issue. The one thing I noticed between tours was my energy level. It was harder to keep up the second time around. I don’t think the weather had anything to do with it. More than likely it was my five-year age gap. I was exhausted by the end of each day.

Cruises: Cruising is my favorite way to see the world, bar none. I’ve written an entire trilogy (Open Series) that began with a cruise. The older I get the more I enjoy the convenience and relaxed atmosphere of being on a ship. All the passengers are treated the same, whether you’re a millionaire or a working girl, and it is great fun to experience the royal treatment for however many days you are on board. There’s no shortage of food or entertainment, and you set the pace. It also gives you the opportunity to see a variety of countries without being locked into a firm timeline. You can always return to the ship if you don’t like what you see. Think of it like speed dating—go back for seconds if you want more.

On his way home from vacation, Scott Gregory, a closeted sub, hooks up with the gorgeous Red, a flamboyant Dom, for a thrilling one-off at a BDSM bar. They part ways after a satisfying scene… but meet again when Robin Kennedy—Red—arrives at his new job as a dental hygienist and discovers one of his two bosses is Scott.

Robin and Scott embark on a journey of exploration into their kinkier sides and discover they’re more than compatible—they’re a perfect match. But keeping employer/employee and Dom/sub separate at the office presents difficulties, and to make matters even more complicated, the owner of the dental practice is an acknowledged homophobe.

They fall in love, but Robin chafes at all the secrecy, refusing to live in the shadows. Scott isn’t as brave; he’s desperate to protect his job and his future. Will they be able to find some middle ground… or will their entire relationship fall apart because of fear?

About the Author: Mickie B. Ashling is the pseudonym of a multifaceted woman who is a product of her upbringing in multiple cultures, having lived in Japan, the Philippines, Spain, and the Middle East. Fluent in three languages, she’s a citizen of the world and an interesting mixture of East and West. A little bit of this and a lot of that have brought a unique touch to her literary voice she could never learn from textbooks.

By the time Mickie discovered her talent for writing, real life got in the way, and the business of raising four sons took priority. With the advent of e-publishing–and the inevitable emptying nest–dreams of becoming a published writer were resurrected and she’s never looked back.

She stumbled into the world of men who love men in 2002 and continues to draw inspiration from their ongoing struggle to find equality and happiness in this oftentimes skewed and intolerant world. She admits to being an angst queen and making her men work damn hard for their happy endings.

Mickie currently resides in a suburb outside Chicago.

Top Five Drinks by BA Torguga – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes BA Tortuga who is celebrating her latest release Whiskey to Wine.

Top Five Drinks

Hey y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and lover of all things western.

So, I’m here talking today about Whiskey to Wine, my new Dreamspun Desire and #3 in the Leaning N series, and I figured…whiskey? Wine?

Let’s talk booze.

Margarita – on the rocks, lots of salt. Basically, I like a nice long shot with a lot of lime juice.

Bloody Mary – Uhn. I love them dirty and spicy and salty and…TOMATO JUICE AND VODKA, Y’ALL!

Castello Chianti – I like a dry wine that you have to sift through your teeth. That always reminds me of Italy.

Rusty Nails – Drambuie, good scotch, ice. That’s it. *eyes cross* I used to drink these in college and feel so damn classy. OMG. Just sip it. Sip. It.

Vodka and tonic with extra lime – this is my go-to drink, the thing I can sip on for a whole evening.

Much love, y’all,

BA

Love is hitting the slopes, and the competition is fierce.

It’s Gay Ski Week in Aspen, and blind sculptor Bleu Bridey and his ex-fiancé, Dan, are at the Leaning N Ranch to unveil Bleu’s latest commission.

Former Olympic snowboarder Ryan Shields is there too… and he’s Bleu’s true love who got away. Seeing Bleu again, Ryan remembers how they couldn’t get enough of each other in college.

Too bad it looks like Bleu is with Dan now, because Ryan would love to remind Bleu how good they were together, in and out of the sheets.

Between Ski Week parties, a bunch of exes, a private ski lesson, and one terrible accident that leaves Bleu stranded and Ryan in rescue mode, it’ll be a wonder if these two manage to survive, much less find a few seconds alone to remember how much love they have to keep them warm even in the worst of storms.

Tara’s Favorite Superordinary Books
Hi and welcome. I’m Tara Lain and I’m here today celebrating the release of my new paranormal, urban fantasy, new adult, superhero, romance/adventure Hidden Powers. Maybe you can tell from that description, this book is a new adventure for me too. Hidden Powers is the first book in a new series called Superordinary Society and it got me thinking about the Superordinary books that have shaped my love of paranormal, urban fantasy, superhero, new adult, romance adventures! LOL. Here, in no particular order, are a few from a mix of genres, but united by a touch of the superordinary.

Midsummer Night’s Dream – certainly an image shaper for many of us, full of the mystery and beauty of fairies and their power over humans.

The Lord of the Rings – The War and Peace of fantasy. My mother loved these stories so much, she had several copies in hardback, which means today I have multiple, multiple copies of these amazing books. I regret that I never applied myself enough to learn Elvish.

Dragonriders of Pern – What a world! The fabulous combination of science fiction and fantasy that was Anne McCaffrey’s amazing series enthralled me and made me want my own dragon (and dragon rider LOL).

Dune – This tale of warring houses and worms conjured such a powerful reality that I walked around in a fog of spice for all the days I read it.

Harry Potter – Of course, like the rest of the world, I was charmed and enthralled by the quintessential buddy tale and the amazing school they got to attend.

• A group of vampire stories including the first few books of Anita Blake (Jean Claude!), some of the Black Dagger Brotherhood and, I must confess, Twilight.

There are so many more, but that’s a taste. I had a lot of fun plunging into the superordinary for Hidden Powers and hope you enjoy it too.

Jazz Vanessen is weird—and not just because he’s a werewolf. For most of his life, he’s felt different from his alpha male brothers and friends. Since he’s adopted, he can’t even blame it on family.

Now eighteen, Jazz meets his idol, the social activist Lysandra Mason, and her breathtaking nephew, Dash Mercury. When Dash is around, even stranger things start to happen, including Jazz falling hopelessly in lust. Not only is Jazz having visions, making people disappear, and somehow turning invisible, but somebody’s following him and threatening to reveal his pack’s secrets to the world.

Together with Dash and Jazz’s equally amazing friends—Carla, BeBop, Khadija, and Fatima—they discover the danger is even more lethal than they thought, and Jazz’s weirdness may save all their lives.

Lysandra’s nephew escorted her to a seat at the governor’s table, then sat beside her. After he pushed her chair back in, he suddenly raised his head like a deer scenting the air and glanced around the crowd. It was kind of like when Jazz smelled danger or someone he knew, but this guy was no werewolf. He might look supernatural, but to Jazz’s nose, he came across as human.

Carla gave Jazz a rough elbow to the ribs. “Close your mouth, or better yet, stuff it with some of that outrageous pile of protein. His name’s Dashiell”—she said it like Dasheel—“as in dash-ing, but she calls him Dash. You’ll get to meet him.”

“I will? Why?” Weirdly, his heart slammed against his ribs.

“Because they’re sitting at our table, and so are you. Come on.” She grabbed his arm.

He pulled it back. Okay, too much. “Uh, I’m not so sure.”

“Why? You’re not shy.”

“She’s just my idol, you know. Sometimes idols are best seen from afar. You don’t notice the cracks.”

She smiled wryly. “You sure it’s not fear of getting a mighty erection in public over Mr. Dashing Pretty Puss?”

He lightly punched her shoulder. Of course, she was close to the truth.

“Dad says Lysandra Mason’s a love.” She hauled on his arm again.

“My food—”

“Bring it.”

He left it on the table and wiped his hands on his jeans.

She laughed.

He let himself be dragged over to where the governor and his wife were sitting with some members of his staff that Jazz mostly recognized from photos. And sure enough, the great lady herself was there, sitting beside—what had Carla called him?—Mr. Dashing Pretty Puss. The closer Jazz got, the prettier he looked. Her too. Strange. Usually humans looked more—human up close. You saw the freckles and blemishes. It made them real and charming. These two just stayed beautiful. Flawless skin, glowing hair, and luminous eyes. Lysandra’s nephew turned to look at Jazz, and Jazz saw that his eyes were some shining shade of pale green. Lysandra’s hair was brown mixed with blond, or vice versa, while the guy’s hair was actually very dark brown with deep shades of red, like fire. Jazz wanted to be invisible so he could sit down and stare at the two of them until his eyes bled.

His hands started to tingle and a quiver vibrated up his spine. Totally cray.

Carla grabbed his arm. “Hey. You okay? You got kind of pale.”

He forced a smile. “Just too much hero worship.”

She marched up to the table like the daughter of a governor—one who knew no fear—and stuck out her hand to Lysandra Mason. “Hi. I’m Carla Mendes, and I’m thrilled to meet you.”

“Delighted, Carla.” The smile Lysandra gave her was warm and genuine.

Carla reached back to Jazz. “This is my best friend, Jazz Vanessen. He’s one of your biggest fans.”

Lysandra turned her gaze to Jazz. Whoa. Where her eyes had appeared hazel at a distance, he now saw that they were gold—a pale yellow-gold like some kind of bizarre cat—but beautiful. Those eyes widened a little, probably at his adoring expression. “Hello, Jazz. How lovely to meet you.”

They weren’t words. They were music that filled his head like sweet smoke. He took her offered hand, almost scared he’d get a shock. Instead, her touch might have been more of a mist that slipped into his veins and made his blood dance like champagne.

Her eyes never left his as she shook his hand, then held it a few seconds longer. She finally blinked. “Carla and Jazz, may I present my nephew, Dashiell Mercury. We call him Dash.”

Jazz was scared to look. He might turn to stone. But when he shifted his glance, Dash was staring at him, his gaze focused.

Carla made a slight snorting sound. “Dash Mercury? Planning on giving FedEx some competition?”

Mrs. Mendes said, “Carla, enough of your smart mouth.”

Dash Mercury dragged his eyes from Jazz to look at Carla. And then he did it. He smiled. The seemingly immoveable, perfect face broke out into dimples and smile lines and crinkles.

Jazz’s mouth dropped open again, and he couldn’t get it closed.

“But I only bring the very best stuff to your door.” Dash laughed. If Jazz had expected a silky, even oily, voice, he was surprised to find Dash sounded pretty much like a regular guy. Friendly, casual, teenage. But Jazz’s wolf senses said that this dude was… something else. Human, yes, but unknown. Unexplored. Maybe dangerous.

Top Five Favorite Spots Andrew and Dominic Visited on Their Honeymoon by Andrew Grey – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Andrew Grey who is visiting with us to celebrate today’s release of Borrowed Heart.

Top 5 Favorite spots and Dominic and I Visited on our Honeymoon
Rothenburg – It’s touristy as all get out, but especially after dark, with the lights on, the tourists clear out and you can have the town almost to yourself. Then it’s magical.

Cochem – A small town on the Mosel river A great quiet starting place to visit other sites like Trier with its Roman ruins. The hotel had a small pool that Dominic and I had all to ourselves. Think naughty, folks.

Wurtzburg – A great walking city with history and pedestrian areas. We strolled through manicured gardens and got lost in each other for a while.

Freiburg – In the black forest. Dominic and I hiked above the city and up in the forest itself. Parts of it felt like something out of Lord of the Rings with the ruins we discovered.

Berlin – Vibrant, happening, a great place to explore amazing food. There was to much to see and Dominic was a wonderful tour guide. He and I walked form one end of the city to another. Berlin will always be magical for us.

The bus door opened, and Johan stepped out. Robin’s mouth went dry and he looked longer than was necessary, but he couldn’t help it. Gone was Cousin It with the beard and super long hair. Hello clean-shaven, black hair flowing down to his shoulders, god among men. Robin had no idea what the hell had happened, but one thing was for certain: all the guys, and Lily, turned and gaped as Johan strode off the bus.

“Are you ready for me?” he asked in a soft voice, and it took Robin a second to get his mind out of the gutter.

Robin nodded and swallowed once again. “All the luggage is tagged and ready to be loaded.” He pointed to the line of bags, and Johan nodded, walking over to heft two bags to the bus and load them into the luggage compartment underneath. Robin turned away from where Johan worked and stood by the door to the bus. No one moved, the guys enthralled by Johan, watching him work. Robin cleared his throat, and they seemed to come back from whatever fantasies had gripped them. Not that Robin didn’t understand. He suddenly found himself with his own fantasies, and they weren’t professional in the least.

One by one, Robin checked off each of his tour members as they got on the bus. Javier got on first, half leaping into the bus, then pausing at the top with a sigh as Oliver climbed in more slowly. The ladies all followed, and then the others filed on, with Kyle and Billy bringing up the rear, chatting a mile a minute.

Infuse Real Life into your Writing by Amanda Meuwissen – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Amanda Meuwissen who is celebrating the recent release of her newest book A Model Escort.

INFUSE REAL LIFE INTO YOUR WRITING

In my recent release, A Model Escort, one of the main characters is a data scientist, someone who works with predictive algorithms to determine future behavior.

You’re probably most familiar with this technology when on sites like Amazon and Netflix, which take your past behavior over long periods of time to recommend what you’ll likely want to buy or watch next.

Scary how often they’re right or influence you into your next decision, huh?

I work with this technology in my day job too, a marketing automation platform for auto dealers that does this same type of thing to better individualize emails dealers send to their customers. None of us want generic spam anymore; we want a message tailored to us.

I also know people in other industries who use this technology, but one stood out to me and stuck in the back of my mind—a forensic scientist working on predictive models to determine where crime is most likely to happen to better plan distribution of police officers throughout the year in the most needed areas.

I took that concept and applied it to my protagonist for this story, using it as the catalyst for why Owen Quinn, socially awkward data scientist, uproots his life and starts over. He has other reasons than a new job in a new city, but this theme connects to multiple elements throughout the book—predicting outcomes.

Like one of my favorite lines, no one can predict everything, but still: Meet every surprise in life like you had a plan all along.

I doubt I would have made this connection or chosen that profession for Owen if I had been in a different place in my life when I wrote the book, but I never shy from infusing elements of now into my writing.

The aim of the company is to continue reading this now order cialis overnight provide its products globally. Some themes you’d consider: 1) SEO tips and tactics 2) sildenafil price in india Dating and romance 3) Conspiracy theories bordering on the unbelievable 4) PC optimization 5) Online business techniques 6) Offline business ideas 7) Adsense marketing 8) Affiliate marketing 9) Hobbies When choosing a theme, make sure you’re knowledgeable and passionate about it. Indoors cycling is much less hazardous as the seat is levitra generika 10mg properly adjusted. But in the end they end up practicing natural remedies and techniques such as Yoga, Tai Chi, acupuncture, hypnosis, cialis professional india massage, and aromatherapy. This tends to be true with a character’s favorite song—maybe one I’ve been in love with recently—or a beloved movie, or some ridiculous event that happens based on a story I heard from a friend. The start of my YA novel, Life as a Teenage Vampire, begins with the two main characters blowing up a teddy bear, which happened with my husband and a friend during high school.

When you think of something in the moment, it tends to make itself more alive as it transitions onto the page, and then becomes something not only based on reality, but uniquely real and robust about that character.

I’m diving into my next project about an aging choreographer falling for his young physical therapist, and in chapter two I have him picking up string cheese as a terrible vice when normally he eats healthy—all because my father was staying with me for a few weeks and picked up string cheese as a snack, harkening back to my childhood and giving me a human personal touch to add to a new character.

My advice is to embrace those moments where even something that might seem silly at first can actually be what brings your characters to life.

What’s the value of love?

Shy data scientist Owen Quinn is brilliant at predictive models but clueless at romance. Fortunately, a new career allows him to start over hundreds of miles from the ex he would rather forget. But the opportunity might go to waste since this isn’t the kind of problem he knows how to solve. The truth is, he’s terrible at making the first move and wishes a connection didn’t have to revolve around sex.

Cal Mercer works for the Nick of Time Escort Service. He’s picky about his clients and has never accepted a regular who is looking for companionship over sex—but can the right client change his mind? And can real feelings develop while money is changing hands? Owen and Cal might get to the root of their true feelings… if their pasts don’t interfere.

Top 5 Distractions with Bru Baker – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Bru Baker who is visiting with us to celebrate the recent release of Stealing His Heart, the first book in the Connoll Park series.

Top 5 Distractions with Bru Baker

I sat down to do a Top 5 list on things I like doing when I’m not writing, but it probably makes more sense (and is more revealing about me) to talk about the Top 5 things I do when I’m supposed to be writing.

5. Actually writing.

4. Trying not to think about all the other books I want to write as soon as I’ve finished the current one. Most authors will probably agree–plot bunnies are at their most ferocious when you’re between 10 and 50 percent into your current manuscript. And you know what they say about telling someone not to think about the elephant in the room…especially when he’s wearing bunny ears and staring at you mournfully.

3. Cooking. I’m not talking about taking a break to make dinner for my family, though I do that as well. I’m talking about procrasti-baking, the time-honored tradition favored by hungry procrastinators everywhere. Procrasti-baking took a serious turn for me after I binged on The Great British Baking Show, so I have to be careful or else I’ll find myself elbow-deep in a book fold with a manic gleam in my eye three-hours into my “writing session.” So while I’m writing, brownies are OK, but puff pastry, not so much.

2. Deep cleaning the kitchen. (This happens after the procrasti-baking, naturally.) I’m talking pulling everything out of the fridge to wipe down shelves, organizing my pantry, cleaning my garbage disposal, wiping down the seal on my dishwasher…yeah. It’s bad.

1. Spending time on social media. This one’s tricky because part of being an author is maintaining an online presence, so it’s kind of legit. But there’s a fine line between keeping up with the community and going three-deep into Which Royal Will You Marry Based on Your Favorite M&M Color tests.
You can bring up to date 50mg generic viagra opacc.cv your partner, tactful enough, that there’s a legitimate health reason why you need to always think positively and be confident. Love sneaks in like a thief in the night.

Danny’s parents raised him to believe his wolf was a curse. He’s part of the wealthy and powerful Connoll Pack, but only nominally. He abandoned that world to volunteer with supernatural kids, and he isn’t looking for a mate….

Max is a shifter who is also a detective. He’s working a case that could make or break his career. Danny’s caught up in the case he’s on, and he’s also irresistible. They’re a bad match—Max, an Alpha having trouble with his new powers and Danny, who trusts Alphas as far as he could throw one. But they can’t get enough of each other, and they might bond before they even see it coming.

They could be amazing together, but they have to get past a few obstacles—especially since someone close to Danny might be involved in the thefts Max is investigating.

About the Author:Bru Baker writes sophisticated gay romantic fiction with strong characters, real-world problems, and plenty of humor.

Bru spent fifteen years writing for newspapers before making the jump to fiction. She now balances her time between writing and working at a Midwestern library in the reference department. Whether it’s creating her own characters or getting caught up in someone else’s, there’s no denying that Bru is happiest when she’s engrossed in a story. She and her husband have two children, which means a lot of her books get written from the sidelines of various sports practices.

Rebound by Andrew Grey – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Andrew Grey who is visiting with us to celebrate the recent release of Rebound.

There are so many things that I like about writing a story like Rebound. I love developing interesting characters that might not seem to go together on the surface, but are perfect for each other on the inside. I’m very much a fan of looking beneath the surface. That is something I do in my every day life. I always try to look beyond what I can see to the real person beneath. I also love a story with a little bit of intrigue and mystery I know that comes form years of reading mysteries and who done its. I think that adds something to a story that is just difficult to beat. Of course I love writing and developing the sexy parts. I’ll let you in on a secret, sometimes I sit in restaurants and make up stories about people I see around how they might be in bed. Its kind of fun, harmless, and it lets my imagination run a little wild. I love doing the same with my characters, except I get to share those imaginings with you. First and foremost, I adore writing my happy endings. they warm my heart and make all the hardship that I put my characters through worth it.

Professional basketball player Bri Early needs a physical therapist after an injury, and he’s heard that Obie is the best. Bri takes an immediate liking to the out-and-proud man with the magic touch, and even though Bri isn’t openly gay himself, he’d never let anything stand in the way of something he wants.

Obie can’t deny that the sexy athlete presses all his buttons, but he’s a professional and has no intention of getting involved with a client. While they’re working together, it’s hands off, no matter how great the temptation.
But being a pro athlete isn’t easy. Bri has enemies, and one of them is making his life hell. When his house is set ablaze, Bri can no longer pretend the threatening messages he’s receiving are jokes. He needs a safe place to stay, and Obie can’t turn his back. But the two of them in the same house is a recipe for combustion that could burn them both….

“I’m Bri Early, from the Philadelphia Rockets. I was told that you can help me.” He kept his voice as calm as he could make it, even though his belly was doing flips. If he didn’t heal and regain his strength, he was going to be cut from the team. Contract or not, his career would be over. And that was something he didn’t want to contemplate.

“Yes. Monty said he was passing on my contact information.” He sounded a little out of breath.

“I don’t mean to be pushy, but….”

The guy laughed. “You’re talking pushy with a physical therapist? That’s a good one. I can out-pushy anyone.” He continued chuckling. “Let me guess, you want an appointment as soon as possible so we can meet and get started.” The guy talked a mile a minute. “You’re in luck, because I had a cancellation, so I can see you for an evaluation in two hours if you’re available. Then we can put together a plan to get you on your feet and back on the court. Does that work?” A beeping sounded in the background behind him. “Fiddlesticks.”

“No. I overcooked my lunch.” He giggled this time, and Bri wondered just what he was letting himself in for. “So, will I see you this afternoon?”

“Yes.” At least he could get in right away.

“Sounds good.” He rattled off the address, and Bri had to work quickly to get it into his phone. Then he read it back. “What sort of office do you have?”

“I don’t work in an office. I have a private practice and I work out of the back of my home. I don’t talk about other clients and I keep everything confidential. I have a number of high-profile clients who use my services because no one sees them coming and going. The house has an alley in back, with a parking space under the carport that you can use. Then come right through the gate and up to the office door.”

“All right.” At least there weren’t going to be other people around to stare at him, like at the first place he tried. It was supposed to have been exclusive too, but that’s sure not the way he remembered it. He shook his head, trying to forget the embarrassing episode.
