Top Five Favorite Courses at University by Sean Michael

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Sean Michael who is celebrating the release of Educating the Professor. You can read our review of the book here.

Thank you to Long and Short Reviews for hosting me today!

Growing up, I loved school and that didn’t change when I hit University. In fact, my love got even bigger as I got to focus more on the things I loved. I took summer courses, not because I needed the credits, but because they offered stuff like companion courses Irish Lit and Irish History taught by a professor visiting from Boston University.

So, I thought I’d share my top five favorite courses I took at University.

5. Short Story – I loved this class for the professor as much as anything else – he had a great teaching manner which was probably a good thing as I had two other mandatory courses he taught.

4. Russian – I loved learning this language and even participated in a trip of university students to the Soviet Union.

3. Canadian Fiction – I read some awesome books in this class, including Coming Through Slaughter by Michael Ondaatje which really opened my mind to what fiction could be.

2. Spy Novels – this one had great reads, but also an old prof who meandered from one thing to another that I found absolutely fascinating.

1. Science Fiction – yep, I got to read my favorite genre as homework! Even the fact that the prof was dry as dust and an egomaniac didn’t ruin it. (And to be fair the ego was well deserved, every non-fiction book on Science Fiction I read for papers referenced him in the bibliography.)

Kenneth Brannigan is a small-town history professor. He’s happy with his life, loves the classes he teaches, and lives in a tiny apartment in a converted house with his best friend, Tim, next door. At the mixer, Kenn meets David Burgundy, a new-to-town TA who is working on his masters. Dave is drawn immediately to Kenn and is thrilled when Kenn offers to show him the best pizza place in town. One meal leads to two, which leads to Dave and Kenn spending most of their free time together… and Kenn loosening his self-imposed rules regarding dating and sex for some kinky fun.

Kenn’s ex isn’t going to just let Kenn be, though, and the happier Kenn is with Dave, the less the ex likes it. Will Kenn continue to run away from his past, or will his relationship with Dave help him face it head-on?

“I’m sure. So Anita said history. What’s your focus? Is that what they call it? Or would speciality make more sense?”

“My focus is North American history, specifically post-industrial and LGBT studies. I also teach western civ.”

“Cool. I’m archaeology. I’ll be doing my first TA work this year.” He was actually a little nervous. It was a sensation he wasn’t that used to.

“Ah, I remember those days. I’m sure you’ll do fine. Who are you working under? Dr. Jonas?”

“Yeah. She’s one of the big reasons why I decided to do my masters here.”

“Welcome to campus. It’s a good place.”

“Thanks.” Dave liked Kenneth’s quiet voice, and he wanted to engage him in conversation. “You have to tell me where the best pizza joint is. That’s always the first place I try to discover.”

Now, Cary, North Carolina-based fine artist Don Mertz adds a 21st century concern regarding the demanding visual “clutter” from our digital devices that scream for attention day and night. “Many of us grew up in an generika cialis 20mg analog world but now struggle with, embrace or grudgingly accept the fact that medium ranges of hysteria might be current on this situation due to the fact well. This includes approved medications that contain Sildenafil as discount priced viagra the active ingredient. “Do you like thick or thin?”

The temptation to ask if they were still talking about pizza was huge. Dave went for something not quite as suggestive, but he did let his eyes slowly climb from Kenneth’s feet to his face. “I guess it depends what I’m in the mood for.”

“If you like thin, then Oscar’s is the place. If you like thick crust, Davidos is great.”

“Davidos? You know I’m going to have to give a place that’s nearly my namesake a try. Especially if they’re thick….” He let the sentence trail off, his unspoken “Like me” lingering in the air.

Kenneth’s gaze flickered away. “It’s decadent. Try the sausage, if that’s your thing. It’s better than sex.”

Interesting. Kenneth had gotten it, Dave thought, but wasn’t sure what to do with it. Still, Kenneth had brought up sex, so Dave would run with it. “I love sausage—pun definitely intended. And nothing is better than sex. Of course if you need empirical evidence….”

Kenneth chuckled softly. “I’m not in the market for anything more involved than pizza.”

“But you are in the market for pizza. You should come with me to Davidos. Better yet, we’ll have one from each back at my place and compare them, see which one is better.”

“Did you manage to find an apartment? I know that’s the biggest concern around here.”

“I’m rooming with a bunch of folks—it’s how I met Anita. You’d like it. I’m serious, come see it and eat pizza with me and tell me outrageous stories about the academy.” What he really wanted to know more about was Kenneth.

“Oh, I have papers to grade….” Those green eyes were fastened on Dave, though, the interest clear.

“Already? You’re a hard taskmaster. On yourself as well as the students.” He nudged Kenneth’s shoulder. “Come on. Play hooky with me tomorrow evening.”

“How about we meet at Davidos for supper? I don’t have any evening classes.”

Cautious. Dave wondered if there was a story there.

“Sure thing. Six?”

“Six thirty?”

A little pushy too. He kind of liked it. “Six fifteen.” They could meet in the middle.

“I can manage that. Uh. Do you have a phone number if I have to cancel or something?”

“I was just thinking we should exchange deets.” He pulled out his phone and handed it over.

Top Five Monsters by M.D. Grimm – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes M.D. Grimm who is celebrating the recent release of her newest book Eye of the Beholder.

Top Five Monsters

Good day everyone! Thanks to Long and Short Reviews for hosting me today. And thank you lovely readers for joining me to celebrate my newest release Eye of the Beholder. In honor of my vampire romance, I thought it would be fun to take a trip in the Way Back machine and look at creatures that started as monsters and somehow morphed into misunderstood anti-heroes. Don’t get me wrong, I like the tragic vampire or werewolf as much as the next person but sometimes I miss a good ol’ fashioned monster meant for nightmares.

Vampires used to be terrifying—think undead corpses cursed to drink the blood of their descendants. So basically, zombies on a blood diet… but creepier. And werewolves were said to receive their shape-shifting powers from the devil and an enchanted/cursed fur pelt. Then they liked to go out and eat maidens and children. Yum.

Since my latest release features vampires I thought it would be fun to discuss the creepiest and most nightmarish monsters human stories have to offer. I am defining “monster” in the most primal sense as beasts that prey on humans and often can’t speak. They might be intelligent but they are always hungry and have no empathy or compassion. (Note: I personally don’t consider dragons as monsters but you might disagree… so that’s why they aren’t on my list.)

In honor of the beasts of the night, here are my top 5 favorite monsters of folklore and myth. (Note: there are tons and tons of folklore and mythological creatures out there that I haven’t researched so this list is constantly in flux)

1. Jǫrmungandr aka Miðgard Serpent (Old Norse)
a. Gigantic snake… ‘nuff said
2. Fenrir (Old Norse)
a. The giant wolf fated to eat Oðin at Ragnarök… now that’s the way to go!
3. Apophis aka Apep (Egyptian)
a. Yes, another giant snake… this one of chaos and death!
4. Jiangshi (Chinese)
a. “Hopping” vampire—a reanimated corpse that sucks out your life force. Yikes.
5. Manticore (Persian)
a. Because… bizarre!
Such as-* hormone abnormalities* lumbar disc disease* thyroid disease* multiple sclerosis* trauma* sleep apnea* lung disease* kidney and liver problems If a risk factor can be identified and rated for safety, as part of the ergonomic risk assessment. viagra online sample For mild erection issues, exercises and simple diets can help, but when erectile dysfunction is severe an effective formula like secretworldchronicle.com viagra online stores can help effectively and put an end to erectile failure in bed. So what are your favorite monsters? What are the ones that give you nightmares or make your skin crawl? Let me know!

May dragons guard your dreams,
M.D. Grimm

Is it better to risk it all… or never know what could have been?

After surviving an abusive childhood, Vulcan remade himself upon arriving in Los Angeles, California. He became a blacksmith for the paranormal community and strives to earn the respect of the vampire covens and werewolf packs that call LA home. He also prevents the pain of loss by keeping everyone at arm’s length.

But he never planned on meeting a former Roman soldier by the name of Marcus Cassius Vespillo. Something sparks between them and turns into a friendship he never considered possible. He can’t deny his intense attraction to the intelligent, courteous, ancient vampire. And it scares him.

Though Vulcan is wary of seeking more with Cassius, an attack leaves him at death’s door and forces him to reexamine his priorities. But Cassius has his own secret, one that promises tragedy and loss. And if that wasn’t enough, a slayer arrives in the States, one with a bloody connection to Cassius… and Vulcan himself.

About the Author: M.D. Grimm decided to become an author in the second grade (kind of young to make life decisions, but whatever) and nothing has changed since then (well, plenty of things, actually, but not that!). Thankfully, she has indulgent parents who let her dream, but also made sure she understood she’d need a steady job to pay the bills (they never let her forget it!). After graduating from the University of Oregon and majoring in English (let’s be honest: useless degree, what else was she going to do with it?), she started on her writing career and couldn’t be happier. Working by day and writing by night (or any spare time she can carve out), she enjoys embarking on romantic quests and daring adventures (living vicariously, you could say) and creating characters that always triumph against the villain (or else what’s the point?), finding their soul mate in the process.

Writing a Gay Cozy Mystery Series by Joe Cosentino – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes back Joe Cosentino who is visiting with us today to celebrate the release of his newest Nicky and Noah mystery, Drama Castle. Leave a comment about why you love cozy mystery novels for a chance to win an Audible code for the Drama Queen audiobook, the first Nicky and Noah mystery, by Joe Cosentino, performed by Michael Gilboe.

Joe Cosentino on Writing a Gay Cozy Mystery Series

Don’t you love cozy mysteries? The cozy locations, humor, quirky characters, romance, and most of all the whodunit puzzles? I’ve read hundreds of them! So it came as no surprise that after majoring in theatre in college and enjoying an acting career opposite stars like Rosie O’Donnell (AT&T industrial), Nathan Lane (Roar of the Greasepaint musical onstage), Bruce Willis (A Midsummer Night’s Dream onstage), Charles Keating (NBC’s Another World), Jason Robards (Commercial Credit computer commercial), and Holland Taylor (ABC’s My Mother Was Never a Kid TV movie); I began writing cozy mystery novels. I used a great deal of my knowledge of acting to write my Jana Lane cozy mystery series (The Wild Rose Press) about an ex-child star making a movie comeback while solving murder mysteries on the set. However, I realized there were very few cozy gay mysteries out there. So, since I was and still am a college theatre professor with a wacky sense of humor, I created the Nicky and Noah mystery series about two gay college theatre professors solving mysteries on campus and beyond. Given my experience with theatre faculty and students, I had no shortage of interesting characters and drama (pun intended) to write about (though thankfully nobody has been murdered on my campus.)

Though the novels contain some mild sex scenes, I call them cozy since the settings are warm and cozy, the clues and murders (and laughs) come fast and furious, and there are enough plot twists and turns and a surprise ending to keep the pages turning faster than a priest heading for altar boy orientation (as Nicky would say). At the center of all the stories is sweet romance between Nicky and Noah. No matter what trials and tribulations Nicky and Noah go through, there is always a happily ever after ending—until the next book. Reviewers called the series hysterically funny farce, Murder She Wrote meets Hart to Hart meets The Hardy Boys, and a captivating whodunit. One reviewer wrote they were the funniest books she’d ever read! When Nicky, Noah, Martin, and Ruben cozy up to the Victorian-era cherry wood fireplace with hot cocoa in hands to discuss the suspects and clues, that’s is the true definition of a cozy mystery for me.

In Drama Queen (Divine Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award for Favorite LGBT Mystery, Humorous, and Contemporary Novel of the Year) college theatre professors are dropping like stage curtains at Treemeadow College, and college theatre professors Nicky and Noah have to use their theatre skills, including impersonating other people, to figure out whodunit. In Drama Muscle (Rainbow Award Honorable Mention) Nicky and Noah don their gay Holmes and Watson personas again to find out why bodybuilding students and professors at Treemeadow are dropping faster than barbells. Also, Nicky and Noah’s relationship reaches a milestone by the end of the novel. In Drama Cruise it is summer on a ten-day cruise from San Francisco to Alaska and back. Nicky and Noah must figure out why college theatre professors are dropping like life rafts as Nicky directs a murder mystery dinner theatre show onboard ship starring Noah and other college theatre professors from across the US. Complicating matters are their both sets of wacky parents who want to embark on all the activities on and off the boat with the handsome couple. In Drama Luau, Nicky is directing the luau show at the Maui Mist Resort, and he and Noah need to figure out why muscular Hawaiian hula dancers are dropping like grass skirts. Their department head/best friend and his husband, Martin and Ruben, are along for the bumpy tropical ride. In Drama Detective, Nicky is directing and ultimately co-starring with his husband Noah as Holmes and Watson in a new musical Sherlock Holmes play at Treemeadow College prior to Broadway. Martin and Ruben, their sassy office assistant Shayla, Nicky’s brother Tony, and Nicky and Noah’s son Taavi are also in the cast. Of course dead bodies begin falling over like hammy actors at a curtain call. Once again Nicky and Noah use their drama skills to figure out who is lowering the street lamps on the actors before the handsome couple get half-baked on Baker Street. In Drama Fraternity, Nicky is directing Tight End Scream Queen, a slasher movie filmed at Treemeadow College’s football fraternity house, co-starring Noah, Taavi, Martin, and Shayla. Rounding out the cast are members of Treemeadow’s Christian football players’ fraternity along with two hunky screen stars. When the quarterback, jammer, wide receiver, and more begin fading out with their scenes, Nicky and Noah once again need to use their drama skills to figure out who is sending young hunky actors to the cutting room floor before Nicky and Noah hit the final reel.

Now in Drama Castle, Nicky is directing a historical film co-starring Noah and Taavi at Conall Castle in Scotland: When the Wind Blows Up Your Kilt It’s Time for A Scotch. Rounding out the cast are members of the mysterious Conall family who own the castle. When hunky men in kilts topple off the drawbridge and into the moat, it’s up to Nicky and Noah to use their acting skills to figure out whodunit before Nicky and Noah land in the dungeon. By the end of the novel, Noah also makes a shocking personal revelation. Nicky and Noah are joined by their best friends and fan favorites Martin and Ruben, and by Noah’s eccentric parents. And book seven adds a number of captivating new characters like Brody Naughton, the hunky head of Housekeeping with a red beard and roving eye for the oldest Conall brother, Barclay, and for Donal Blair a waiter in the castle’s Great Hall dining room. Each of the three hunky Conall brothers (Barclay, Magnus, and Fergus) have a surprising secret. Ewan Baird, the elderly caretaker, provides Nicky with information about the last generation of Conalls, which blows the story wide open.

It is my joy and pleasure to write and share these cozy mystery novels with the readers. So everyone, take your seats. The curtain is going up on steep cliffs, ancient turrets, stormy seas, misty moors, malfunctioning kilts, and murder in the seventh Nicky and Noah cozy mystery, Drama Castle!

Theatre professor Nicky Abbondanza is directing a historical film at a castle in Scotland, co-starring his spouse, theatre professor Noah Oliver, and their son Taavi. When historical accuracy disappears along with hunky men in kilts, Nicky and Noah will once again need to use their drama skills to figure out who is pitching residents of Conall Castle off the drawbridge and into the moat, before Nicky and Noah land in the dungeon. You will be applauding and shouting Bravo for Joe Cosentino’s fast-paced, side-splittingly funny, edge-of-your-seat entertaining seventh novel in this delightful series. Take your seats. The curtain is going up on steep cliffs, ancient turrets, stormy seas, misty moors, malfunctioning kilts, and murder!

Ainsley Conall, the thirty-five-year-old lord of the manor, stood on the grassy moor surveying his property. He watched the mist spread to the nearby golden cliff, emerald mountains, and white-capped turquoise sea. His tunic, kilt, hose, and shoulder cloak matched the tall, strapping man’s long auburn hair and striking emerald eyes. The leather sporran hanging from a chain over the impressive lump at his groin proudly bore the Conall family crest—three lions. As he rested his size-ten leather brogue on a rock, Ainsley proudly gazed out at the ancient lighthouse, old abbey, and most importantly Conall Castle standing majestically in the distance. This was his heritage, his pride, and his joy.

An eastern wind blew the kilt up his back, exposing his melon-like bubble butt.

“Cut! We’ll save that for the blooper reel.”

I always wanted to say that. But I didn’t think I’d be uttering those words on a mountaintop at the northernmost tip of Scotland. I’m Nicky Abbondanza, Associate Professor of Play Directing at Treemeadow College, a private college plagued by murder in scenic Vermont. How did I get to Scotland, the land of men in kilts? After directing a play at Treemeadow College that moved to Broadway, I helmed a slasher film, which to nobody’s surprise was ignored by the Academy Award voters. However, Barclay Conell, the owner of Conell Castle and Hotel in Scotland, caught it while scrolling through one-star instant-play movies on his computer. It wasn’t so much that Barclay was impressed with my artistry. The film’s low budget and one-week production schedule caught the green in his eyes. You see Barclay was also the author of The Lord of the Castle, a five-hundred-and-thirty-eight-page novel that could turn an insomniac into Rip Van Winkle. Propelled by his novel’s high local sales, Barclay decided a film adaptation was in order—even when a local fisherman confessed he had bought up all the novels as gifts for unsuspecting fishermen in hopes of sinking the competition’s ships. When Barclay’s emails to Z-list celebrities went unanswered, undaunted in his cinematic pursuit, Barclay decided to star in the film version himself—playing his 1745 ancestor, Ainsley Conall. His wife, Moira (an unemployed actress currently working as his desk clerk), finally got an acting gig as Ainsley’s devoted wife. For reality sake, and to keep peace in the family, Barclay’s middle brother, Magnus (the hotel’s accountant), was cast as Ainsley’s middle brother and pal, Archibald. Finally, Barclay’s youngest brother, Fergus (the hotel’s restaurant manager), didn’t have much of a stretch to play Ainsley’s youngest brother and little buddy, Angus. And to keep the budget anemic, Lairie Naughton, the fourteen-year-old daughter of the hotel’s head of Housekeeping, was slated for the role of the devoted young maid, Aggie.

Barclay took no reservations at the hotel for a week in June and made me an offer I couldn’t refuse: a four-figure salary, a film budget as thin as a vegan with a malfunctioning juicer, and a one-week shooting schedule. How could I say no? So, I continued the casting by adding my ten-year-old adopted son from Hawaii, Taavi, as Ainsley’s adored son, Roddy. Before a divorce was threatened, I hired my husband of four years, Assistant Professor of Acting at Treemeadow College, Noah Oliver, to play Roddy’s noble tutor, Oliver, and to serve as the film’s acting coach. I decided to cast the smaller roles once we got to the castle.

There was the small, or not so small, matter of the film adaptation. Barclay’s attempt was as ponderous and heavy (pun intended) as his novel. So, my best friend and department head, Professor of Theatre Management Martin Anderson, wrote the screenplay, or as Ruben Markinson, Martin’s husband and our producer, said, “the foul-play.” With the excitement of a conservative politician nixing environmental laws, Martin went to work loading the script with scandal, seduction, and assassination. Try saying that three times fast. His new title: When the Wind Blows Up Your Kilt, You Need a Scotch.

My Cooking Genes and a Recipe by A. Nybo – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes A. Nybo, who is celebrating the recent release of her latest book The Devil’s Breath.

My Cooking Genes

A giant thank you to the crew at Long and Short Reviews for hosting me and the guys (Birch & Henri of The Devil’s Breath) today.

I inherited my family’s cooking genes. We are not cooks, we are re-heaters. If I prepare a meal and put it on the table, people usually decide to go out for dinner. Because it’s a genetic predisposition (this has been anecdotally tested) neither is most of my family. I have even managed to cook a soup that my dogs wouldn’t eat—and they are not fussy. The biggest problem is that I get bored and sidetracked. The smell of charred vegetables or the heady scent of smoke wafting through the house usually has me wondering if there’s a bush fire, before I remember I was cooking something.

Therefore, the only meals I ever make have a special quality about them. They are quick, easy and preparation heavy. When I say preparation heavy I mean there is more than half a dozen ingredients that need to be measured out. I don’t mean there are vegetables to be cut, meat to be marinated, things to pre-cook. No, my meals are for the inherently lazy, forgetful re-heater.

When any of my family comes across a recipe that meets the above criteria, we share the recipe. To this end, today I’m going to do something I’ve probably only ever done half a dozen times in my life, something specifically for those of you out there that can’t be bothered with all the culinary brouhaha required for a super tasty meal—share a recipe.

This recipe might take a few goes to adapt specifically to your taste (if you can be bothered), but this is the perfectly acceptable unadapted base from which to work. And it is tasty!

Here goes:
Oh btw, this is called: You know that dish with the noodles?

Dried vegetable noodles (approx 1.5 rounds per person. The same amount of sauces can be used whether cooking for 2 or 4 people)
1 bag of dryslaw (if you want to feel the culinary skill magic, you can always make this yourself, but I don’t recommend it, too many opportunities for knife slips, boredom and the like)
1 tsp minced garlic
1tsp minced chili (if you want to test your endurance, you can use hot, but I usually just go for sweet chili sauce)
2 tbsp soy sauce
3 tbsp hoi sin sauce
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp mirin (for sweetness. Could be maple syrup, sugar etc)
Scallions for garnishing

Pour boiling water over noodles
Kamagrafast tablets works best when taken in the proper dosage, viagra no prescription shown an effective ally in help for erectile dysfunction. There are common equipmments such deeprootsmag.org purchase levitra online as screwdriver, hammer, saw- to name a few that are so effective as these capsules. Kamagra Online can be ordered levitra 10 mg easily and fast delivery is assured. Also throughout your pregnancy your ligaments (the tough, flexible tissues that connect your purchase cialis without prescription bones) are stretching to support the growing uterus (womb). Heat wok
Add oil, garlic and chilli
Dump in the dryslaw
Add sauces and mix
Drain noodles & add to wok
Mix & it’s done.
Serve with scallions sprinkled on top

Saves well in fridge or freezer so you can make extra to re-heat later 😉
If you want to add meat, go ahead, but that means you have to cook it first.

I would include a picture for your pleasure, but that would mean cooking just for the sake of photography. In addition, since I’m a culinary inept extraordinaire, my lawyer has advised against me putting a photo of my cooking abilities on the internet as it may hinder future opportunities to get a job as a cook.

Henri’s stalker has left him with a paradoxical legacy: his mind rebels at the thought of being touched—the very thing his body craves.
For three years Henri has fought to overcome the horrors of the past. Now on the other side of the world—after leaving Australia for Canada—Henri’s nemesis is hunting him with maniacal focus. Trying to escape, he meets Birch, a kind horse trainer, who’s confounded by Henri’s idiosyncrasies even as he is drawn to him. But when Birch discovers the truth, he encourages Henri not to just survive, but to live.

Maybe even to love.

About the Author: A. Nybo has tried conventional methods (a psych degree and a GC in Forensic Mental Health) but far prefers the less conventional, such as the occasional barbecue in the rain, four-hundred-kilometer drives at 1:00 a.m. for chocolate, and multiple emergency naps in any given twenty-four-hour period.

Western Australian born, she has been spotted on the other side of the planet several times—usually by mosquitoes. She’s also discovered Amazonian mosquitoes love her just as much as they do in her home state.

Top Five Favorite Things to Do by Ward Maia – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Ward Maia who is celebrating tomorrow’s release of Beneath These Fields. Share some of your favorite things for a chance to win a copy of the book.

*****

Hi! I’m Ward Maia and welcome all to my Top 5 Favorites! I’d like to thank Long and Short Reviews for hosting me today.

I’m a fairly new writer, but I love, love, writing. But today, I thought I could share some of my other favorite things to do.

My favorite vacation destination is my backyard! I was born and raised in Brazil and I absolutely love my big, beautiful country! And since I live close to the beach, making a quick escape to see the Ocean and replenishing the creativity well is something I’m very fortunate to do almost daily.

Animals, of all shapes and sizes. Whether they be scaly or feathered, I adore all animals – yes, even the poisonous ones. I also think babies of all species are just the cutest thing. I’d love to one day live in a huge farmhouse, rescue as many animals as I possibly can and hoard them all to myself.

I’m vegan, so my favorite recipes all involve one or more types of vegetables. I’m particularly fond of mushroom – no, not the magical kind – and I try to incorporate them into almost everything I eat. Being vegan ties a lot into my love of animals and also helps with my mental health, because no matter where I am or what I’m doing, I have to take some time off to prepare something for me to eat.

I grew up reading the classics and my favorite books of all time are Moby Dick, Dom Quixote, Pride and Prejudice, Ulysses and etc. I could go on to name all the classics I love but if I had to pick one, I’d have to say Moby Dick. Early on in my writing – and maybe still today – it heavily influenced my style. Mostly because I’m a maniac when it comes to alliterations – in that I love reading stories that have them and I also enjoy writing them.

When I’m not writing, I enjoy a strong cup of coffee by the sea side, or reading. I read almost obsessively and at one point in my life, was the proud owner of over three hundred books. Science Fiction is one of my favorite genres and Isaac Asimov is a brilliant author whose works I enjoy rereading every now and then.

Eating usually distracts me from writing, so coffee or a glass of extremely cold water is all I need to get started. Oh, and maybe some classical music as background noise, just to help set the mood.

And of course, my favorite thing of all time is writing. Growing up, books were my safe space, “places” I could escape to. Coming to terms with being transgender was very difficult to me and it wasn’t until my early 20s that I was truly able to accept it. But reading was always something I could rely on when the going got tough. Writing also helped a lot, in the sense that it was a healthy outlet, a way to free the demons from their cages without any collateral damage, so to speak.

So tell me, what are some of your favorite things? Let me know with a comment about one – or more – of your favorites to be entered into a contest to win a copy of my book. Books published through Dreamspinner Press/DSP Publications will be distributed via their webstore. Don’t forget to check back in a week to see who the lucky winner is!

Rudá reached out to him, as if sensing his need to be physically reassured that what happened between them wasn’t a fluke or that Ellis’s confusing thoughts and emotions weren’t one-sided.

His hand landed on Ellis’s shoulder, his fingers digging in briefly when Ellis still chose to remain silent. The weight of his hand disappeared, and he mourned the loss, even if the warm imprint of it lingered. But then he reached for Ellis again, hesitating only briefly before placing his hand on the side of his neck.

Ellis closed his eyes despite himself when Rudá’s hot skin met his. He brushed his thumb over Ellis’s jaw, and the raspy sound his calluses made against Ellis’s stubble made him shiver. He leaned into the contact and sighed. Under normal circumstances, Ellis would never allow anyone to get this handsy with him. But they knew enough of each other to be… friends. Right? Or at least friendly acquaintances.

Right. Friendly sexual acquaintances.

At that moment, Ellis could imagine nothing better than locking himself in his room with Rudá and spending the rest of the day with his callused hands running over all of him, learning all the shapes of his body while Ellis did the same to him.

Rudá’s thumb continued his slow torture, and Ellis sighed.

“What were you doing out in the fields last night?” Rudá asked, thumb still caressing his jaw.

“Trying to find… something,” Ellis mumbled, looking out to the fields.

“Did you find it? I mean, before Duke tried to—how was it you said it—‘drag you down to the depths of Tartarus’?”

The question startled a laugh out of Ellis, easing some of the tension that had been building inside of him. Rudá chuckled alongside him, and when they trailed off, the space between them was occupied by an amicable silence.

About the Author: Ward Maia was born and raised in Brazil and has seen almost every corner of that great and beautiful country. With a M. in Geology and Metamorphic Petrology, spending time in underground labs was more commonplace than interacting with real humans, which lead to the creation of entire fictional universes. The heroes that populate those universes are usually flawed and find love in unexpected places.

Having travelled throughout the country, from North to South, Ward now calls the Northwest of Brazil home. Alongside a grumpy sixteen-year old poodle (that insists on always having the last word) and hundreds of paperback novels, Ward lives five minutes from the beach and enjoys drinking copious amounts of coffee and feeling the ocean breeze while writing about unexpected places and people.

My Five Favorite Things About the Lowcountry by Claudia Mayrant – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Claudia Mayrant, who is celebrating the recent release of Place Setting.

Hi, I’m Claudia. My novella Place Setting takes place in the South Carolina Lowcountry, one of my very favorite places. I’d like to share with you five of my favorite things about it.

5. ruins and cemeteries
4. history
3. bird watching
2. salt marshes
1. Food and drink

5. The ruins and cemeteries have charmed and intrigued me since my earliest visits. Perhaps the structures most famous for Lowcountry visitors are the beautiful grand houses built in the 18th and 19th centuries that delight so many visitors to Charleston, Beaufort, and other towns. As much as I admire them, sometimes the ruins, cemeteries, and churchyards of the region are overlooked. They are beautiful and haunting (and some rumored to be haunted, a notion that thrilled adolescent me), often set amongst oaks draped with Spanish moss and meandering paths where your feet, and imagination, can wander. Some of my favorites include
Chapel of Ease (St. Helena’s Island), Magnolia Cemetery (Charleston), and Old Sheldon Church (Yemassee).

4. That the Lowcountry is rich in history is no secret, but there is history to explore beyond that goes beyond that of wealthy plantation owners that usually get screen time in films and TV shows set here. Next time you’re in the Lowcountry, consider taking a Gullah heritage tour.

The Gullah people have preserved much of their African cultural and linguistic heritage. Today, Harvard university teaches Gullah in its African languages program!

3. The Lowcountry is a must-visit for birdwatchers. Although anyone who spends more than a few minutes outside there is likely to find themselves watching birds soon whether than planned it or not! My favorites are the herons and egrets, but you’ll likely see many more if visiting one of the many parks or nature preserves like the Caw Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel, SC. (They have a bird checklist which lists over 250 species that have been spotted there.)
Physical intimacy browse over here now viagra 20mg with your partner makes up an important part of a human life. However, people with certain medical conditions, or those taking nitrate drugs or alpha-blockers should online viagra mastercard not take this. Dry screening- Small batches viagra canada of slugs are filtered with hand-held stainless steel spatula while the large batches require filtering through the large machines. The passion cheap viagra pfizer of intimacy gets killed when the man fails to achieve an erection.
2. I have always found the salt marshes of the South Carolina Lowcountry some of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the world. The way the South Carolina has over 350,000 acres of salt marsh, known for its tall grass and its waters that change with the tide. Spending an evening in the breeze, looking out over the marsh and listening to the birds and creatures who live there is one of my favorite ways to spend an evening.

1. And speaking of a favorite way to spend an evening, it isn’t complete without some of the amazing food and drink the Lowcountry has to offer. Seafood lovers shouldn’t miss the classics like shrimp and grits or she-crab soup and tea drinkers can visit Wadmalaw Island and the only tea plantation in the United States. There’s a distillery on Wadmalaw as well. (they make sweet tea vodka which is delicious!) Charleston especially is a dream for foodies and cocktail aficionados. Some are dressy, some casual but my best tip is wear something with a comfortable waistline – you’re going to need the room!

Cameron Dunlop has lived in the Lowcountry town of Summer Corners, South Carolina, his whole life. He loves his home, but his little town in the Deep South doesn’t offer much in the way of dating options. Chef Gray Callahan has enjoyed success in the kitchen, but his last relationship sunk like a bad soufflé. When plans for his sister’s wedding go awry, it provides the perfect excuse to pack up and go home, where he can help out as he decides how to start his life over. Gray’s path crosses Cameron’s, and he realizes together they might have all the ingredients to save the day—with maybe enough left over for something sweet just for the two of them.

About the Author: Claudia Mayrant has been exploring the world around her since she was old enough to get around under her own power. Since then, she’s enjoyed visiting as many places as she can.

For all her love of travel, she’s most relaxed back in the South on a Gulf Coast beach with good friends, refreshing beverages, and plenty of sunscreen.

Top Five Tap Performances by R.L. Merrill – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes R.L. Merrill who is visiting with us today to celebrate yesterday’s release of Typhoon Toby, the second book in her Forces of Nature series. Leave a comment or ask the author a question for a chance to win a $10 gift certificate from Dreamspinner Press.

Top Five Tap Performances

Typhoon Toby is the follow up to my 2018 release, Hurricane Reese. Toby is Reese’s songwriting partner and he reluctantly falls for therapist Spencer Hart during a vacation fling. Once they’re reunited at a fundraiser back home, Toby’s carefully contained emotional turmoil lets loose with the power of a major tropical storm and Spencer has to hold on for dear life.

Spencer has a secret talent. He spent his youth mastering tap dancing, and due to an unexpected set of circumstances, he has to pull out the old tap skills in this story. Like Spencer, I spent my youth dancing and tap was always my favorite. For my Top Five list I thought I would share with you my favorite tap performances in no particular order.

1. The Nicolas Brothers
You can’t have a tap list without them. These men showed so much athleticism, stage presence and charisma. They owned the stage. I wanted to be them. I hurt myself many times trying! https://youtu.be/fNKRm6H-qOU

2. Ann Miller
Miller’s turns were drilled into us as young tappers and her hard-working flair appealed to me as a youth. I choreographed a tap number for a stage presentation of Kiss Me, Kate, and did my best to channel her. This is my very favorite performance of hers. https://youtu.be/HvGPCFrMnSU

3. Gregory Hines
The guy was so smooth. White Nights blew me away. I love this performance of his because I could listen to him sing forever as well. https://youtu.be/LqTn7hy2lOU

4. Shirley Maclaine and Gene Kelly
Maclaine is one of my heroines in the world of dance and her gift of comedy made her one of my favorite actresses as well. Watching her match steps with the master is really a treat. Those legs… https://youtu.be/5y76ctjpOn0

5. Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly, and Donald O’Connor
Singin’ In The Rain was the most influential tap movie in my early years. One of my earliest solo performances was to Singin’ In The Rain. This number always makes me smile. https://youtu.be/GB2yiIoEtXw

Honorable Mention: Billy Elliot

The emotion in this clip from the movie is tangible. How many boys were chased away from dance because they feared the repercussions? Spencer in Typhoon Toby probably felt a lot like Billy when he was in middle school. He loved to dance, but all of the unwanted attention he received from others led Spencer to give up his passion. Ma href=”https://youtu.be/p6Cm0A0iuA8″>https://youtu.be/p6Cm0A0iuA8

Thanks for having me on your blog today. I hope you enjoyed a taste of tap dancing. For more recommendations, why not follow me on the socials or sign up for my newsletter-y thingie? I love to chat with readers about the things we are all passionate about. I love that the Forces of Nature series has allowed me to reconnect with my love of dance.

On the surface, Toby Griffiths appears to have it all—talent, money, a brilliant mind, and model good looks. With his best friend, Reese, he’s built an empire as a singer/songwriter.

But beneath that glittering exterior, Toby suffers the lasting effects of abuse. To keep his tempestuous past where it belongs, he insists on anonymity with lovers—no names, no personal information. But a vacation fling in Bali changes all that, and he can’t get his recent playmate out of his mind.

Therapist Spencer Hart left Bali with a bad case of pneumonia and a broken heart. Although he’s recovering, he’s shocked to find his secretive partner on TV, and he’s determined to see him again. Spencer arranges to attend one of Toby’s fundraising galas, and their reunion is tense.

Toby tries to stick to his rules… until a New Year’s kiss with Spencer washes away the last of his resistance. But Toby is a man with secrets, and when the storm comes ashore, it could devastate not just his professional life but his fledgling love affair and his longtime partnership with his best friend.

Will Spencer stand by his side and help him weather the storm as Toby faces his worst fears?

Top Five Songs about Ghosts and Spirits by Parker Williams – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Parker Williams who is visiting with us today to celebrate the recent release of The Spirit Key, the first book in his Lock and Key series. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win a signed copy of the book.

Top 5 songs about ghosts and spirits

The people at Long and Short Reviews have asked for an original top five for The Spirit Key. Parker suggested I find five songs about…spirits and ghosts. Really? You couldn’t have asked me for my top five favorite desserts or the guys I found hot when I was a kid? Fine. Whatever.

#5: Legend of Wooley Swamp by Charlie Daniels.

Charlie Daniels had two songs I liked a lot. The first, of course, was The Devil Went Down to Georgia. When I was a kid, I got a thrill when I heard him say, “I done told you one, you son of a bitch, I’m the best there’s ever been.” So that song stuck with me, even if Johnny’s song wasn’t nearly as good as the Devil’s. Just saying.

Anyway, the other song he did that hit me in the feels was The Legend of Wooley Swamp, which tells the story of a rich, miserly man who runs afoul of three brothers who kill him and steal his money. It also talks about instant Karma. I’m not sure why, but the song continues to resonate with me to this day.

#4: Something in My House by Dead or Alive

This isn’t exactly about ghosts or spirits, but I loved the imagery of the song, and I’d always loved their music. From Youthquake to Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to know, they tripped my gay youth in a big way.

#3: Ghostbuster’s Theme Song by Ray Parker Jr.

Because, duh! This was the seminal song for spirits and those who hunted them. Growing up, I sometimes wished my life would be a lot more like this, but no. They got the fun ghosts like Slimer. I got… Well, people with missing faces, and things like that. Really, life is never like the movies.

#2: Hotel California by The Eagles

Okay, I’m going to admit, I have no idea if they’re ghosts or spirits or demons or whatever. But the song was catchy and my mom listened to it a lot, so I got into it. Good thing the guy escaped, too! Being trapped forever with spirits and ghosts might suck.

And finally, #1!

Ghost Riders in the Sky from the movie Ghost Rider by Spiderbait

Okay, this is not the original, nor even the first remake, but this was my favorite version of the song, because it was ghost related! Even though in the comics he was really a demon named Zarathos, or something. But still, the song was pretty dang cool!

So there you have it. My top five ghost related songs. Hope you like them.

When he was eight years old, Scott Fogel died. Paramedics revived him, but he came back changed. Ghosts and spirits tormented Scott for over a decade until, thinking he was going mad, he did the only thing he could.

He ran—leaving behind his best friend, Tim Jennesee.

Scott’s had five normal, ghost-free years in Chicago, when the spirit of Tim’s mother comes to him and begs him to go home because Tim’s in trouble and needs him.

He isn’t prepared for what he finds when he goes home—a taller and sexier Tim, but a Tim who hasn’t forgiven Scott for abandoning him… a Tim whose body is no longer his own. The ghost of a serial murderer has attached itself to Tim, and it’s whispering dark and evil things. It wants Tim to kill, and it’s becoming harder for Tim to resist. To free the man who has always meant so much to him, Scott must unravel the mystery of the destiny he shares with Tim.

WHAT MEMORY stands out most in your mind from when you were a kid? For many of my friends, it was getting a good grade on a test they were sure they’d fail, making a catch during a football game, or finding out the person they were crushing on liked them back. For others, it was more physical, like their first kiss or having sex for the first time.

For me, the one that topped that list was in the summer of 2002. The memory? Me dying. Well, almost dying. I mean, technically, I was dead for twenty-seven minutes, at least according to the paramedics and doctors.

See, I had gone down to the quarry with my brother and some of his friends. I was eight at the time, and to be invited to go along with the “big kids” was a heady thing.

Okay, fine. My mom told them they had to take me, but they weren’t supposed to let me know.

That’s not the point of the story, however. Still, between us, when your brother tells you that Mom said he had to take you and that you ruined his day by dying? That kind of sticks with you.

Anyway. The whole week had been hotter than hell—upper nineties, heat index topping a hundred, with no breeze at all. What made it worse was the humidity. Everyone complained their clothes stuck to them, and we all would have given anything for a bit of cool air. Those were the days you wanted to do nothing more than stretch out in front of the air conditioner and fantasize about being in the arctic.

Of course, those are also the times that drive Mom mad, like when we’re there, whining about how hot it is, and my brother announces he’s going swimming with his friends, and she tells him to take me along to the quarry with him.
Fine. I’m a little hostile over that memory, but in my defense, I died, so I think I have a right to be a tad grumpy.
Moving on….

There were a few old trees that stretched out over a pit of water. In the seventies, the place had been used to mine rocks that were crushed to use in gardens and the like. When the company that owned it shut down, it left a huge hole in the ground. Over time, it filled with water, which attracted kids from all over, wanting to swim. That was our destination for the day.

By the time we got there, all of our T-shirts had soaked with sweat. I distinctly remember looking at Cole Turner and seeing wisps of dark hair on his chest and wondering to myself what it would look like once he took his shirt off. I wasn’t sure why that thought flitted through my head, but it was gone just as quickly, because I saw Tim Jennesee sitting on a rock, taking off his shoes.

“Tim!”

He turned and smiled at me, waving like a freak. I took off running. Tim had been my best friend forever—which at the time was probably a few months, but in my eight-year-old mind, that qualified as a really long time—and seeing him there was a surprise. Normally he preferred to stay inside and play on the computer, indulging in game worlds like the Sims. Later he graduated to MMORPGs like EverQuest, with the promise that one day he would be creating them instead of playing someone else’s.

I got to where he sat and took my spot at his side. He nudged me with his shoulder. “I didn’t know you were going to be here!”

“Ryan asked me to come along.” See? I thought my brother was all cool and stuff. Shows how much I knew.

“Really? My mom said I had to get out of the house. I figured I’d come swimming for a while. I tried to call, but—”

“We were already on our way here.”

I hadn’t thought to call him, and I felt bad… for about three seconds. I was with Tim and the day had gotten a thousand times better. His dark hair shone in the sun, and his brown eyes sparkled. Being with him was enough to make me smile, and having him there with me made the day perfect.

Okay, here’s where things go to shit, so you’ll have to indulge me a bit. I don’t often discuss my death with people, because they ask all kinds of inane questions, and I’m so over that shit.

There was a big tree that stretched out over the watery pit. Someone had climbed it, tied off a rope, then knotted it at the other end. See, the idea was to grab hold, push off, and soar out into the nothingness, then arc high in the sky before letting go and plunging into the water, sinking, then rising once again until you broke the surface, then rushed to have another turn.

Doesn’t that sound idyllic? Like a Norman Rockwell painting or something?

Yeah, you’d think that.

It was my turn. I’d hedged about it all day, because I hated the idea of being so high in the air and falling. Ryan openly mocked me, and his friends teased me to no end. When Tim got up and announced he was going to do it, well, that raised the bar right there. How could my best friend do it, while I was too chicken?

Wrapping his hands around the rope, Tim ran and leaped off the edge, soaring into the air with a loud cry. Then, as he reached the apex of the arc, he let go. For a moment everything stopped, as he rose a little higher, then hung in the air before he dropped like a stone, laughing all the way.

When he broke the surface of the water a few seconds later, my heart started beating again.

“So, nerdy Tim can do it, but little Scotty is too much of a baby.”

It’s funny how you don’t remember how much of an ass your brother was when you were a kid, isn’t it?

“I’m not a baby!”

“Then prove it, chicken.”

“Fine!”

I stormed over to the rope and took hold of it. I glanced down into the murky pit, and my heart stuttered once more.

“Come on, Scott. It’s fun!”

Tim came jogging over, water sluicing down his chest, his hair matted to his forehead. Weirdly, that stray thought about Cole? Yeah, so over it. Now it was Tim that I was staring at.

“Okay.”

I was going to make Tim proud of me. I didn’t understand why, but thinking of him running over and hugging me, telling me how great I’d done? It became the only thought in my head at the moment.

I turned back and set myself, ready to do it. One quick glance at Tim, who nodded at me, and I rushed to the edge, jumped, and flew.

It was amazing. One second gravity has been conquered, and you’re flying up, up, up. Then you remember that everyone is gravity’s bitch, and you’re jerked back down. I hit the water, flush with pride over having done it.

When I flapped my arms to go back to the surface, though, that was when shit got real.

I couldn’t move my foot. Something had wrapped around it and held me below the surface. In my mind, a shark had grabbed me and was dragging me down. I struggled, trying to swim up, and my lungs burned.

You have to know, at this time, my mind had refused to believe I was going to die. It kept screaming for me to fight, to do whatever the hell I had to in order to get back to the surface. And I fought as hard as I could. Only….

At one point, I thought I’d gotten free, and my struggles to swim back to the surface intensified. I pushed hard against the water, trying to get up, back into the sun, but then I knew I was still stuck, and I had no more breath in my lungs.

I remember opening my mouth to scream for Tim to help me, but the murky water rushed in, and I choked, which led to more water being drawn into my body. Everything sort of went hazy and then shifted to black.

I’d died.

About the Author: Parker Williams began to write as a teen, but never showed his work to anyone. As he grew older, he drifted away from writing, but his love of the written word moved him to reading. A chance encounter with an author changed the course of his life as she encouraged him to never give up on a dream. With the help of some amazing friends, he rediscovered the joy of writing, thanks to a community of writers who have become his family.
Parker firmly believes in love, but is also of the opinion that anything worth having requires work and sacrifice (plus a little hurt and angst, too). The course of love is never a smooth one, and happily-ever-after always has a price tag.

My Top Five Favorites by Elizabeth Noble – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Elizabeth Noble who is celebrating yesterday’s release of Whisky and Moonshine. Check below to discover how to win a book from Elizabeth’s backlist.

*****

Hello! I’m Elizabeth Noble and welcome to my Top 5 Favorites. A big thank you to Long and Short Reviews for hosting me today.

I’m a writer and I love, love, love being a writer. However, there are other things in my life I love as well. I thought I’d share a few of my other favorite things that aren’t book related.

My pets. Anyone who has spent more than four seconds on my Facebook page or website knows I talk about my dogs and cat. One of my dogs has his own blog and I think it gets more hits and followers than I do. Creating Finn’s Log is fun, I get to show off my pets, my house and my garden. Anyone who’d like to check out Finn’s writing, here’s the link to his log.

Astronomy. I’m a huge astronomy fan. I really got into it when I was first divorced, and my kids were little. Broke would’ve been a step up on the financial scale. Astronomy was a mostly free hobby and a great stress reliever. Some of the equipment is expensive, but notebooks and magazines are cheap or free if taken out of the library. It’s something that’s also managed to worm its way into the majority of my books.

Coffee and tea. Hot or iced, I enjoy a good cup or glass of each daily. I especially like dark roast flavored coffees and black flavored or fruity teas. I’m a real snob when it comes to my beverages. Whole bean coffee and loose-leaf teas. I’m very loyal to a few types and companies. They’re like my dealers! And yes, I brew my own iced tea. I used something similar to my home brewed tea as a basis for a moonshine in Whiskey and Moonshine.

Dog sports. My kids are grown, have their own homes and families. That gives me a lot of free time I didn’t have when I was a single mom raising kids. Something I’ve always wanted to participate in is Obedience and Obedience Rally. So, to that end Finn and I have been taking classes and preparing to compete this summer. We’re also going to be trying scent work. I’m sure Finn will write all about his accomplishments in his blog. He might even mention me.

A good TV series: I’ll admit it, I like to watch TV, but not just any show. I tend to detective and/or scifi television. If the two are combined all the better. Since the advent of streaming services now I’ll watch an entire series (a few episodes a night) beginning to end. I really like being able to do that.

So, what are your favorite things? Drop a link or comment about one of your favorites to be entered into a contest to win an eBook off my backlist. Whiskey and Moonshine, bundles and anthologies are excluded. Books published through Dreamspinner Press/DSP Publications will be distributed via their webstore. Any other titles will be emailed directly to the winner by me. Don’t forget to check back in a week to see who the winner is and so I can connect with you to get your book delivered. All of my titles can be found on my website.

Drunk on love.
Like a well-aged whiskey, master distiller and old-money entrepreneur Malone Kensington is elegant and refined. Unfortunately he’s also a perfectionist who is more dedicated to the success of his generations-old company than his own love life.

That company needs a public spokesman.

What Colton Hale lacks in sophistication, he more than makes up for with the charisma that’s allowed him to survive on the street from a young age and charm his way into the lucrative—if overwhelming—public position at the Kensington Distillery. When Mal takes Colt under his wing, hoping to polish off his rough edges, opposites attract and a passionate romance blossoms despite the differences in age and background. But can it survive a Kensington Board of Directors who believe Colt is nothing but a gold digger and a kidnapper determined to profit from the love of Mal’s life—dead or alive?

Enjoy an Excerpt

Author’s Note: Notice how I worked one of my favorite coffees into the story

Colt was close enough beside him that the heat he gave off washed over Mal.

“Okay,” Colt said.

Mal put one hand on Colt’s shoulder and turned him around. Not once had Colt shrugged off Mal’s touch or appeared insulted or uncomfortable. “This way to the bath.” Mal opened pocket doors at the end of the room that led to the bedroom. The bathroom was off the bedroom. “That sliding door opens out to an enclosed balcony.”

“Wow,” Colt said in a low voice.

Colt nodded and walked ahead of Mal to the suite door. The way he looked back at the rooms made Mal smile softly. He was proud of his house, and it always made him happy when someone else liked it as well. They returned to the kitchen, where Mal cut the cake and placed generous slices on two plates.

“Do you like coffee?” Mal asked.

Colt shrugged. “Yeah, sure.”

“Ah-ha, well, that makes me think you’ve never had good coffee, and this cake screams for good coffee.” Mal leaned down and cupped his ear. “Hear it?” Colt laughed, and Mal pointed at him. “There, I got to hear that laugh again.”

Rolling his eyes, Colt blushed and spent a few seconds watching himself scuff his toe over the floor tiles.

“This is my favorite. Italian roast,” Mal explained as he ground the beans.

“That smells good.”

Mal snorted. “It’ll smell even better after it’s brewed.”

“How much are you going to make in that huge coffee maker?” Colt pointed to the behemoth machine he’d noticed earlier.

“That thing is for those intimate gatherings of a hundred or so,” Mal explained. He pointed to a thick hourglass-shaped jar. “This is another kind of coffee maker.” He put water on to heat. “It’s called a Chemex and was developed in Germany in the nineteen forties. Filters go in the open top part, add coffee and hot water, and in a few minutes we’ll have the best cup of coffee you’ve ever tasted.”

When the coffee was ready, Mal stood and watched while Colt took a sip. “Well?” Mal asked.

“Oh… oh my God, that’s…. Oh my God. I never knew something like this existed,” Colt gushed.

Mal handed Colt his mug of coffee and picked up both plates. “Shall we take this outside?”

Oil and Water by BA Tortuga – Excerpt

Long and Short Reviews welcomes BA Tortuga who is releasing the second edition today of Oil and Water.

Hey y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and lover of all things cowboy!

I’m tickled to be re-introducing Max and Morgan, the boy’s from 2006’s Oil and Water. They’ve been waiting for their re-release a long time, and I’m pleased as punch that they’re here.

Morgan wrapped his jacket around himself, tugging the collar up against the rain. Miserable weather lately. Maybe it was time to head south. Italy, maybe. Or Brazil.

Somewhere warm and lush and green.

He shivered, trying to decide whether to go to his little private flat or his official rooms or just find a pub to hide in for a few hours. There was no way he was bringing his flute out into this shit.
His reverie was broken by the feel of a solid shoulder slamming into his, almost knocking him back on his ass on the wet pavement.

“Careful! Christ, this isn’t a fucking football field.” He winced, rubbing his shoulder.

“Shit! Sorry. I didn’t even see….”

The voice rang a bell. So did the tall, rangy body, even if it was topped by a cowboy hat this time instead of a cap. He grinned up. “Well, cowboy! Rescue me on one meeting, beat me on the next.”

“Oh. Hey.” He got a half smile that turned into a thunderous frown. “You’re a hell of a houseguest, leaving without a word.”

He backed up a step or two. “Didn’t know I was one. A houseguest. I left my cell number.”

“You did? Oh.” Now Max just looked… embarrassed. “Sorry. I…. It wasn’t there when I woke up. ’Course the maid, or whatever the hell she is, was in….”

Morgan grinned, shook his head, then moved closer, reached out, and grabbed Max’s phone off his belt. He found the address book, scrolled down, and found his name. “See? Right here.”

“Oh. Well, how in hell was I supposed to know that?” Max grinned back. “I never call anyone.”

“Oh, good to know.” He looked Max over, nodded. “I like the hat.”

“Thanks. Keeps the rain off better.” Max reached out, wiped a drop of rain off his nose.

“Yeah. I was just wishing for something warm and lush.” There was electricity—pure and sharp and settling in his balls—whenever they touched. Still. Wow.

“Yeah?” Shifting from one old cowboy boot to another, Max nodded. “It’s wet as a dog in a creek. Want to have dinner with me?”

“Oh, I’d like that.” A dog in a creek…. Oh damn. That was adorable, as adorable as anything pure, walking sex could be.

Much love, y’all,

BA
