There are few times when I’ve bestowed a “best book” rating on something I’ve reviewed. The story really has to nab me quick and hold me in my seat. When I picked up Regularly Scheduled Life, I knew I’d like the book, if only that one of the heroes was a teacher. But this book was so much more. Once I started the book, I literally couldn’t put it down. I propped it open while I made dinner, because I needed to know what happened next with Kyle and Sean. Yeah, it was that good.

So what hooked me? The emotion and the characters. K.A. Mitchell writes with such intensity that it felt like I was in the room with Kyle and Sean. I rushed through, savoring every word to know what would happen. Kyle was my favorite character, hands down. Yes, there were times when I wanted him to stand up and show his frustration, but I totally understood his position with Sean. He loved Sean with all his heart. Seeing Sean hurt tore Kyle up inside. If it was possible, I’d have hugged the poor guy.

And then there’s Sean. The guy has heart, a big, fuzzy, cares-about-everyone heart. As with Kyle, there were times when I wanted to bop him on the head, but I understood. He’d been shot and wanted people to learn from the situation. Give the man props for thinking about the greater good. He cares about Kyle more than he can say, but as with life so many times, things spiral out of control. That’s where I really respected Sean. His reactions were human and something many readers can relate to.

Oh and there is this super hot scene with a glass toy and a little maneuvering—get your head out of the gutter—that made me respect and love them more. Plus it made me squirm in my seat for all the best reasons.

If you want a book that’s sure to stick with you long after the last page, then you need to read Regularly Scheduled Life. It’s a Best Book, indeed.

What I didn’t understand is why at least Master Lucifer agreed to not acquire any more subs other than Jacqueline. I think that it was clear from page one to the end how much Thomas/Lord Fyre and Celia/Kitten cared for one another. The way that Kitten’s needs depended on him so much for emotional support made their relationship believable, which is part of the reason that she fell apart when his brother, Nikos, showed up causing Thomas to step away for a while. Leaving Thomas to war between the love for his past life and his brother and his future with Kitten and Garrett/Master.

The relationship I did not understand was the relationship between Garret and Kitten. If Thomas was not around they could not seem to get along in the least bit. The story mentions how they had been together prior to Thomas entering the relationship, but to be honest I don’t see how they did it without him. Thomas really seemed like the glue that held the ménage together.

Individually I liked the characters, but together they lacked certain chemistry at times. Thomas/Lord Fyre seemed to have so much on his plate and so many commitments he couldn’t possibly handle everything. It was clear that he loved both Garrett and Kitten, but he just did not have the time to dedicate to the relationship. Garrett, although a Dom, could not seem to dominate Kitten – that was a major part of the problem in their relationship, yet he seemed to be a great dom when it came to his responsibilities at the club. Kitten, although a submissive 100-percent when it came to Thomas, seemed to have no respect when it came to Garrett. She and Garret definitely seemed more like equals and not a dom/sub relationship. But since I did not previously read any of the other stories I just saw the problems and not so much the happiness between these two characters. So I suggest readers to read the first story in this series prior to this one since it is obvious when reading this story this series is meant to be read in succession and not as individual stories.

One thing I did really enjoy about this story was Thomas and Nikos’ relationship. As identical twins they really had that twin connection. Even if they hadn’t seen each other for a while they were willing to do anything for the other. This was evident in the way that Thomas dropped everything to take care of his brother. Nikos was definitely a character someone would want to see more of.

The external conflicts in this story really added excitement. Thomas was trying to hide his brother Nikos from the people who attempted to kill him and Nikos has attracted some less than desired individuals. Garrett also struggled with the changes within his and Kitten’s relationship and did not cope with them in the best manner. These conflicts allowed me to see just how difficult the relationship between the characters really was and how much they had to fight for what they have and want. Especially Thomas – he tried to protect so many people, without them even realizing how much he did.

This is one of the few true BDSM stories I have read. The “play” really took precedence in this story even over the sex which I found fascinating. It definitely gave me a better insight on what a BSDM relationship can be. So if you are a true BDSM lover this would be a good series to look into.

I mean when Drake met Uncle Flopsy I was quite impressed because he was a very cool and hip secondary character.

Hunny is endearing. She’s also not afraid to do the right thing which is what gets her in trouble in the first place. Another aspect of her character is that she enjoys role playing and sex and yet she’s a good girl; she just has a very healthy appetite – but for one man. And although there was a bad guy and his plan was truly diabolical and sick, the author chose not to sink this story into some sort of depraved romantic suspense story but kept it positive, upbeat and life-affirming. The external conflict pushed the two love bunnies together and united them and I think that is what the book is about – romance. There are so many moments of true romance or romantic moments that it’s sure to please other romance readers too. And when Hunny and Drake do the physical tango, it’s as hot, fun and passionate as an erotic romance reader could wish.

I whole-heartedly recommend reading Protect and Serve: Badge Bunny especially for those readers looking for a quick romance that has a lot of heart and humor. This is a book I’d tell my friends about and hope they‘d read it too just so we could trade quotes and quips back and forth. There were so many fun one-liners and references, it was that enjoyable and even the happily ever after was lighthearted and special. I’m running out of adjectives to express how wowed I am with this book. I adore the author’s voice and am hoping she writes other books with that same sense of style and humor because I want to read those too. While I understood Victor’s fears and doubts regarding his sadist needs, each scene became more of the same. Will he hurt Shiloh if he releases that evil portion of himself within? Can he control himself? And adding to this was a continued guilt for being who he was at heart – a sadist. Fortunately, Shiloh’s character managed to offset this with her own turmoil as she realizes that unless Victor can let go of the past and give her the opportunity to stand against and submit to the darkness within, she will have to walk away from the man she has fallen in love with; for she is a true masochist and needs what only he can provide – if only he can get past his issues.

The writing, as I stated above, is fantastic. Ms. Burkhart pens memorable stories with tortured characters that are impossible to forget. I recommend Hurt Me So Good to BDSM enthusiasts who don’t necessarily want the heat (there is heat here, but not to the degree that many stories in this genre aspire to) but a story that takes them on an emotional journey.
