I especially appreciated the romance that unfolded between Taranis and Lavina. They’re both strong minded and have a clarity of what’s wrong and what’s right. Taranis’ goal changes throughout the book thanks to Lavina but she does as well, becoming a stronger person more willing to take a stand since she’s found what’s worth fighting for. I was reminded in many ways of the television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, so it wasn’t hard to imagine what the characters and setting looked like during that time period.

Ms. Ruttan proves to have a writing finesse when it comes to historical romance and I will gladly read more of this fabulous author’s work.

The potential for a romantic connection is clear with them and I enjoyed reading about them.

It’s when a reader meets Maya, the heroine, that all the conflict and mild drama starts happening. She’s a young woman who has a close tie to her family – perhaps a bit too close even for her age. In that I mean that I found it a bit odd for her to still call her father ‘daddy’ and not to have shortened it to ‘dad’ at this point in her life. It’s almost like she has no real ambition to do much and is in a sort of limbo. Sure, she has a job that she acts responsible about but there just something…off. What attracted me about Penny’s character and what makes her so lovable is both her innocence and the fact that she is a woman with curves insecure about her looks. In a world like today where top models grace every magazine cover and ad, I felt thoroughly identified with Penny and her fears. Something else that I particularly loved about Penny were her daydreams; they are both erotic and funny.

Fortunately, a minor mistake couldn’t stop me from reading ahead and wanting to discover the fate of these two characters and their hidden passion. I was completely involved with them and couldn’t wait to see how it all worked out.

A Midwinter Prince should appeal to fans of the author first and foremost. Fox’s unique voice and style of writing are not for everyone and some may find the prose difficult and/or awkward. However the lovely romance and story reminiscent of star crossed lovers should help compensate for any problems. Passionate characters and good dramatic tension create a story that feels like a throwback to historical stories yet remains a contemporary.
