Ms. Reed has a great story here but in many places, descriptions were overly exaggerated and when it came to the sex, the scenes fell flat with me and the dialogue became awkward. Overall, though, the story had a great plot and that’s what kept me reading. The beginning and in between parts were well written. I enjoyed the chemistry between the characters but the harmony between the sheets was a problem.

Songbirds was a good book and with a surprise ending I really didn’t see coming, I enjoyed it. Ms. Reed’s style was fresh and different and, with her wit and charming characters, I’m looking forward to her future works.

The author’s voice and writing keep you engaged from beginning to end as the even pace and good mix of action, sex, and character development carry the story. The characters are all interesting on their own, each with back stories and subtle nuances. Jeff and Gabe connect early on but slowly build their relationship. This lets the tension build since there is a question of what will happen when true allegiances are revealed. At the same time their relationship feels almost too easy and while they’re a likable enough couple, I never felt any deep passion. Instead, the host of supporting characters held my attention.

Angel 1089 is the first in what promises to be a very fascinating new series. The science fiction story offers a complicated and engaging new world filled with innovation and familiar elements. The angels vs. demons mythology is well handled and should appeal to fans of that theme while bringing in urban fantasy readers. The romance is not the best part since Gabe and Jeff never quite have the same drama as the dangerous, high tech world surrounding them but I’m curious to see where the series goes from here.

It is clear the physical attraction was there even if Hunter is in denial — and how she could deny a catch like Dre for that long is amazing to me. Dre is able to recognize what they both need and if he has to force Hunter kicking and screaming he will make her see how perfect they really are together.

The take charge attitude of Dre really drew me into the story and I think it will do the same for you.
