Laura Phillips is grief stricken over the loss of her husband. As she grieves she is stricken by strange occurrences and dreams that make her question her sanity. She knows she has to go there but when she does, she steps not into the pleasant and restful vacation she craves but into the arms of an ancient evil waiting for their chance.

This book took off from the get go for me. I’ve read Catherine Cavendish’s work before and have enjoyed her brand of storytelling. In this story, you feel the grief of a woman who has lost her husband and the desperate grasping at anything that gives her life meaning once more. When she begins to dream of a stranger and a very particular hill, she finds out about the place and books a trip. Unfortunately for her, the past is very much alive in Pendle and the witches won’t go quietly.

The historical aspect of the story appealed to me immensely and as Laura got in deeper and deeper, I couldn’t put this book down. It was a bounce back and forth between contemporary and historical settings, with changes in POV as the change occurred. I much prefer third person as the historical portions were done in, but the first person didn’t distract too much from my enjoyment of the book. It was a wonderful horror novel that took all the best elements of the genre and brought to life a time in history that we don’t often think about.

If you love a great story with witches and things that go bump in the night, you need to try this one!

This book was a page turner from the first. From the ghost story in Sweden to the haunted New York property, author Sean Munger does an amazing job of capturing the feeling of the time and the characters. He’ll teach her to love her body…one spanking at a time.

Brienna Morgan has worked hard to look good. Ten years ago she stuck to the shadows, watching the popular kids, wishing she could be one of them. But when they weren’t calling her cruel names, nobody noticed the smart overweight girl with the glasses.

So when she braves her high school reunion and runs into Kade McBride, the boy she loved from afar, the last thing she wants is for him to remember her. It’s bad enough she still sees that girl every time she looks in the mirror. But Kade does remember—and he makes it impossible for Brie to refuse to go out with him. She’s not convinced it’s a good idea, but she can’t pass up the opportunity to be part of the in crowd.

As far as he’s concerned, he’d rather forget those days. Especially the day he screwed up and left his best friend to pay the ultimate price. But when he sees the gorgeous woman enter the gym, he’s immediately drawn to her. Regardless of her claims that she’s not the girl he thinks he remembers, Kade realizes maybe he’s been given a second chance to right at least one wrong from his past. And he’s determined not to throw this opportunity away, even if he has to tie Brienna to a spanking bench to prove his point.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…but when your own eyes don’t see the beauty in the mirror what then?

Brie is a woman with weight issues. Facing her oncoming high school reunion, she is terrified and excited about running into her long time obsession Kade. She has worked hard to maintain her current weight, but can’t shake the scars of the past. When she runs into him at the reunion and he asks her out, she acts like she doesn’t remember him.

Kade recalls the one girl who was honest and true to him in high school and is excited to see her at the reunion. When she won’t admit to remembering him, he asks her out on a date, determined to find out more about this new and sexy version of Brie.

Jamie is Brie’s best friend. Gorgeous and studly, he has no romantic inclinations toward her but bristles as things evolve between Brie and Kade-especially when she reveals that their second date is not just at a restaurant, but the Vault, the new adult club in town. It seems that Jamie just might have some secrets of his own.

This story has some twists and turns, but my favorite aspect is Brie learning to love her body. Kade insists she see in the mirror what he does and that can be a difficult thing. Weight issues are a core thing that can haunt a person’s self-image for years and the terror that she will go back to what she was before is enough to rock Brie’s world, even threatening the budding romance between Kade and herself. When he takes her to his family’s business- The Vault, she is awakened to a whole new reality. When Kade and Brie are threatened by someone who wants to exert her own brand of control all bets are off.

And I stop there lest I give away too much of the plot. This book is very hot, but I was thrown a little off by the opening scene. It didn’t end up detracting from the rest of the book, but I like to get to know a character before I’m walking through one of her orgasms. The book is an awakening for Brie and a personal growth for Kade who has never considered a woman for a long term relationship-until now.

You can find many secrets buried in The Vault series-and I can’t wait to explore the next one.

“Santa’s not the only one coming to town…”

It has tormented European children for centuries. Now America faces its wrath. Unsuspecting kids vanish as a blizzard crushes New Jersey. All that remains are signs of destruction-and bloody hoof prints stomped in the snow.

Seventeen-year-old Billy Schweitzer awakes on December 5 feeling depressed. Already feuding with his police chief father and golden boy older brother, Billy’s devastated when his dream girl rejects him. When an unrelenting creature infiltrates his town, endangering his family and friends, Billy must overcome his own demons to understand why supposedly innocent high school students have been snatched, and how to rescue them from a famous saint’s ruthless companion-that cannot be stopped.

The holiday season has set in and so have several disappearances in Billy Schweitzer’s small town.
Billy is a young teen dealing with several growing up issues and battling depression. Reeling from the rejection of his crush, he is forced to go to class. All around him events begin to unfold as danger stalks the snow covered streets.

Billy is given an assignment for German class and with his friends uncovers an interesting being called Krampus whose tracks resemble hooves. They also correspond to tracks around some of the missing kids, including Billy’s own brother. It’s up to Billy and his love interest Maria to figure out what is really going on. Her brother is missing and time may be running out for them all. A major winter storm is approaching and the more facts Billy learns about who this monster is and what he wants from the residents of their small town, the more urgent and terrifying his task becomes.

This book hooked me from the outset. Stories of teen angst and social anxiety never fail to pull me in, but don’t be fooled–this is not a young adult novel. Billy is reeling from squashed dreams and the cold reality that things don’t always go as planned. When his brother is taken and other kids turn up missing, he begins to use the smarts given to him from his father, a very rigid but competent police chief, to piece the facts together no matter how crazy they sound.

Krampus, the demon who exemplifies the darker side of the Santa tradition has come to claim the naughty children and Billy might just be the one he is looking for after all. It will take all of his skill and cunning to beat a foe centuries old with a taste for the perverse and a talent for pain.

The facts about the Krampus legend were fascinating and the author explains how Krampus was used to keep children from misbehaving in historic times. How then, does one stop a Christmas demon? You’ll have to read this adventure to find out. The characters were good, but on occasion the dialog became a bit dry and unrealistic. The story itself was a page turner that had me opening my e-reader whenever I had the chance.

It’s the secret ingredient behind the family’s intoxicating ale and bourbon, among other elixirs. But only when Scott inherits The Family Tree Inn, deep in the hills of Virginia, does he learn anything about his family, its symbiotic history, or the mammoth, ancient tree around which the inn is literally built. And after he stumbles upon the bony secrets hidden in its roots, while in the welcoming arms of the innkeeper’s daughter, he realizes that not only is blood thicker than water-it’s the only thing that might save him from the hideous fate of his ancestors…

When Scott Belvedere receives a letter stating he is the heir for an inn in a remote part of Virginia, he is set on getting rid of the property and resuming his normal life. When he arrives at the Family Tree Inn, all of that changes.

The Family Tree Inn is an institution run by the Belvedere men for generations. A bloody history of land rights and property disputes, to say the locale has a shady past might be something more than an understatement. It’s nestled in an incredible back woods mountainous terrain with a strong Appalachian twang. Feeling a bit like a fish out of water, Scott gets to know the land and the people that live there. People that age much slower than the world around them. People that may be involved in something more than merely running an inn.

As he begins to wander the property he notices some odd things that don’t make sense, but lead him even further down the path of ownership of the inn. Should he stay and run the place or go back to his life in Chicago? When he is introduced to the daughter of the housekeeper, Caroline, his interest is piqued, along with his growing taste for the house brew.

The inn revolves around the tree. Would within and without, the Family Tree is all things to the people of this backward place. Tapping the tree for the mead and whiskey, the tree is life. But what Scott doesn’t realize is what the tree gives, it also must take. A member of the Belvedere family has always been the keeper of the tree and he is about to find out just how much the tree expects from him.

There is a strong erotic element to this novel. As Scott ingests more and more of the blood of the tree through the house brew, he becomes to realize one of the side effects. He is perpetually in rut and is put in the position of taking sometimes three women a night. The way the story is laid out may not entirely appeal to female readers as the women are depicted in a 2-D kind of fashion where their primary focus is getting pregnant by the heir to the tree. It was a good horror novel despite this and in some ways reminded me of The Wicker Man (the newer version). As the story progresses, the debauchery does as well. What was erotic becomes forced and Scott is taken and tapped much like the tree. There is no escaping his fate. He is the heir and the heir must provide.

Can Scott break away from the hold of the Family Tree and its devoted disciples? Is the blood of the few worth more than the many? You’ll have to read this fast paced thriller to find out.

Sierra Fox, Book 5

Sierra Fox has finally inherited her grandmother s power to destroy demons, but what good is it when her werewolf boyfriend still lies in a coma? Worse, the decision she s about to make could save him but ruin their relationship.

If that s not enough bad stuff on her plate, she s got a soul to save the soul of her closest friend, killed by the Lamia that got away.

Another untasty side dish: The Obscurus refuse to give up their relentless pursuit, and they ve upped the ante. Mace is dead set on blowing up the Spook Catcher Council Tower, and the blowback will have devastating effects on Sydney and for Sierra. At least these demon-obsessed freaks aren t counting on Sierra having a Goddess and a trusty demonic conduit as backup.

All of this leads to a one-way ride into the abandoned part of town, where the Obscurus plan to summon Legion. With her demon hunter friend by her side, Sierra prepares for the final battle because even she knows this will be The End.

When you look into the abyss, it can look right back at you.

In the fifth book of the Sierra Fox series you will meet a demon hunter with a soul to save. Sierra’s closest friend has just been killed by a Lamia and her soul taken. In a race against time, she has to rescue her before it’s too late. Add to that a boyfriend in a coma and some complications when he doesn’t seem to be getting much better and Sierra has to resort to the nearly unthinkable to stop him from flat lining. Life can really be a twisted mother sometimes. Especially when you’re dating the local pack alpha.

The group Obscurus is after Sierra, especially Mace, an unholy force who will use anything he can to blow up Spook Central. In a battle that will take everything Sierra has, the odds are not exactly in her favor-unless you count a Goddess and a demon conduit as backup. This book was a rocket ship of a ride and I think if read in order would have been awesome.

Going into the series at book number five, I was decidedly lost. Sometimes you can jump right in and find your way but there were so many minute details that didn’t make sense, it took a while before I could get a bead on what exactly was going on with the story. Sister who dies and comes back to life when someone close to them dies. Okay. Check. Great concept. It led the way into the story but as things began to unwind it was unclear who the people were and I struggled with that and to some extent I think it detracted from the book for me.

I think I would have liked to see a bit more of a recap for people who stumble across this book (like I did) and fall in love with the art, not realizing it is in the middle of a series. As I said, sometimes you are able to navigate the waters but this felt more like a mudpit and I couldn’t get a grip.

On the other side, the main character was great and the dynamics of the world were intriguing. I liked the demon aspect and the conflicted nature of her saving her werewolf boyfriend the way she did. The sex was steamy and a nice topper on the cake. I want to go back and read more of this series so I understand the world better and I think in doing so, I will enjoy it much more. Urban fantasy fans will enjoy this series-but please read it in order.

When girls start to go missing, a serial killer is suspected. Nathan, a supernatural bounty hunter joins with Daisy as she tries to help her bosses solve the case. Being a student and part time associate should really pay more. Especially if she has to fight serial killers.

The homeless brigade of supernatural beings and the vampire legend of Polidori was a great story element and I loved the way the historical figure was represented. Finding out who was stalking him and the courage Daisy exhibits when she goes in defense of the vampire was truly great.

I was hooked with the voice of this book from the start. It didn’t matter to me that it was the second book and I hadn’t read the first one. It was clear and touched on necessary topics that led me right into the story and into the finer points of the plot and the tensions going on at the funeral home. The world building was stellar and I sucked up every detail. This is a book I wanted to sneak away on breaks and read. That I stayed up way too late and had a twitch when it was over, making me reach for the phone to request the first book in the series. Like now…right freaking now. Lol.

Now there isn’t much in the way of romance, but there is some sexual tension going on with Nathan. Here is me hoping in future books there will be some bed hopping chemistry but I loved it just the same. The snark and interaction with the characters, paired with the supernatural elements and the surprise twist with the serial killer was a jaw dropper and I started to snort through my hand in the middle of the break room. Awesome CL. I love your twisted mind. You are an inspiration to me and I bow down before you.

Oh-and I want many, many more books with Daisy. She kicks some monster butt.

Vulnerabililty was a theme during the book and it really resonated with me. Noir/Lucy is two people, but why can’t she just be both? Al has to struggle with his fears of relationships and decide whether or not to trust her with his life and his case. Great tension and a wonderful plot development.

The romance between Noir and Al began before the book started but I had no trouble picking up what was happening. The love is there, but so is the mounting tension. Personal barriers, police vs. transient population, politics and greed all play a part in this great novel.

I will be going back for more books from this author and she is on my must read list for urban fantasy.

Cecilia will do anything to have a baby. Anything.

Cecilia has tried everything to have the one thing she wants most—a baby. She’s been through every procedure, taken every medication. Nothing seems to work. Her body simply refuses to grow the life she so desperately yearns for. Her jealousy is making her lash out at the pregnant women around her. She’s starting to worry about her sanity.

But all is not lost. There is still one way. And Cecilia will do whatever it takes.

Cecelia wants a baby but what is she willing to do to get one.

What are the things we covet the most? The things around us every day. Cecilia had it all. A marriage, a job she loved and a future. She is a doula, hired by families to assist in the birthing of their children, but with every child Cecilia helps into the world, the more she hates and resents what fate has handed her. Rage strums under her skin like a tangible force. When she snaps at clients, her boss calls her in for what Cecilia is sure is her last day on the job.

Only it isn’t. Judy, Cecilia’s boss has a few secrets of her own. When things continue to spiral downhill, July offers to tell her how to get a baby of her very own, but to do it will cost her more than she might be willing to pay.

This book was a quick read and I was immediately sucked into Cecilia’s emotional vortex. As a woman, I feel the lack of a child very profoundly sometimes. To be Cecilia and help with all of these births, knowing you will never have the thing you want most in the world is a soul crushing thing and even the best people have been known to be twisted in the face of something like that.

When Judy tells Cecilia about her own veritable deal with the devil, so to speak, Cecilia rejects her and walks away. But it niggles-those doubts and longings in the night and soon she finds out just what Judy was talking about.

I am now a complete and utter fan girl of Shane McKenzie and can’t wait to read more of his work. He captures the emotional essence of a woman at the edge of her rope and left you right there in the room as you watched the events unfold. Bravo on a tale well mastered and a blood curdling tale of motherhood gone horribly wrong.

Read this one with the lights on.
