Women were second class citizens and in this tale it takes an even darker turn.

While I enjoyed the overall idea of the story, some points in the execution left something to be desired. The repetition of words and awkward phrasing made a good portion of the book difficult to get through without wincing. I rooted for the girl who rose from the dead and wanted her murderers to get their due, but I strong bit of editing on this story would have gone a long, long way.

All in all, I enjoyed the mix of rotting zombie and Jack the Ripper. What a lovely idea that the two could remotely even be related. There is a definite spark of genius, but like all writers, an editing hand is worth much.

Read this one in the light and be careful who you meet just outside the gates of the local graveyard.

At one point he threatens to leave her in them all night and that physically cannot happen.  There was also the issue with the contract at the end-one minute she couldn’t be with anyone else and the next she is getting it on with Brad.

Overall the tension was good, the characters compelling and the neat twist at the end was great. Leona is a girl trying to figure out her kinky side and she has two very different men to choose from. Will she choose right? You’ll have to read this one to find out.

The two young lovers were also tragic and I loved their story just as much. Arielle is a girl like so many teenagers. Angry and trying to find her way, she considers giving away her body, one of the only things she has control of. As the night develops she learns to listen to the wind and hear the whispers between the branches.

Trinity needs a new start with her son and Noah wants to silence the voices that keep him up half the night. Organizing the clean-up and repairs for the old Frampton place, the two find the past is very much alive-or dead if you count the body waiting for them underneath the floorboards of the house.

Just like that a local murder is discovered, and with it the door to the past is wrenched open. Two wounded characters fumble their way through attraction, murder, taking care of Trinity’s son and the deaths of kids under Noah’s protection. The story spins up and the plot has some interesting twists. Bodies. A murderous history in Trinity’s new house. Missing kids. Missing women. Addiction. Coping. Random sex with people who hate each other.

I hadn’t read any of the previous novels/novellas in this series. From the start I felt like I was missing something. Pieces that should have made sense didn’t as a stand-alone book. The other issue I had was I could not connect with the characters. They were not relatable to me. I tried to like Trinity, but ended up being annoyed with her most of the time. Her thoughts were disjointed and much of her thoughts about Noah were insipid and repetitive. Noah was much more likeable because of his work with troubled kids, but even still the back and forth of the foreshadowing was distracting. I kept putting the book down and had to struggle my way through to the end.

One thing about the book that did resonate with me was the aspect of healing as part of the reconstructive process. Noah wasn’t just there helping Trinity repair her house, a house that held a prominent place in his past. He was rebuilding himself along the way. Trinity was as well. They both had shattered and scarred lives and were desperately trying to build something on a solid foundation. That something just happened to be a house with a body buried beneath it. The love Trinity bears for her son and her willingness to sacrifice herself for his safety was also something I appreciated.

This book is more mystery than a contemporary romance.  The mystery and sinister goings on were a good start. Not being able to connect to the people and feeling lost really put a damper on this story for me. If you are going to read it, I would go back and read the beginning. It would have filled in some of the plot holes.

An interesting mystery with some potential as a series.

Things are not always what they seem and in this tale it is more true than most. I loved the ending—but I won’t say more because I don’t want to give you a spoiler.

Jane Nin is a wonderful writer and I look forward to more of her work. I think Silk Words may be on to something with the CYOA stories. Being able to choose…now that’s what I call sexy.

When Brendan finds her, you feel the uncertainty and fear—will my job find out? Will he stalk me? It’s all there. So is the heat when they connect. It’s electric and I couldn’t stop reading. Kudos to A. M. Hartnett. I am now a convert awaiting your next novel.

When Pierce takes Demi to a haunted hotel for a weekend getaway, there are more things than the spooks that go bump in the night.

Pierce has been in love with his best friend Demi since he could remember. He’s had enough of waiting and he wants to tell her how he feels. He sets up a ghost hunting expedition at a nearby haunted hotel and gets everything just the way Demi would want it, down to the music playing on the MP3 player. Whisking her away, the two collide in a passionate realization of their feelings for one another.

A ghost is waiting for them at the hotel and she picks up on Demi’s erotic nature and hangs on for the ride. Sex, sex and more sex fill the couple’s time at the hotel. There is some investigating but it leads them back to bedroom exploration and the realization that they both like things a little bit kinky.

The only fly in the ointment is Pierce’s realization that Demi doesn’t do relationships. She stays on the surface. Can he delve beneath her armor and save his damsel from the ghost before none of them have a happy ending?

This story was a cute weekend getaway type of set up with a ghost hunting expedition thrown in for good measure. There were some reactions from both characters that felt over the top and I had a hard time identifying with either one of them. Pierce was too nice-setting everything up without demanding anything from Demi. She was a whirlwind of nature and kind of a sex kitten without much happening behind the scenes.

The chemistry between Demi and Pierce was undeniable and author Shyla Colt does a great job playing them off on one another. Using the male POV so the female reader can try and connect with the hunky hero was a win. Every girl wants to be whisked away for the weekend for kinky sex and it was nice to see things from his perspective.

Overall, this was a fun paranormal romp especially nice if you are in the mood for a short, quick read.  It’s ghost hunting on the go with some sexy adventures under the sheets.
