But if you want back-story, then you might want to read the others in this series. There are scenes that may be difficult to read since Jaime gets captured by the Alpha and so on. There are scenes of forced sex but the author has mentioned it without going into the details.

The book has a classic plot since Jaime is the distressed/submissive mate that needs saving and Franco is the protector. There were alternate time changes from present to past. It did give a better understanding with the story.

Jaime may be physically weak and may need Franco’s protection and strength but out of both of them Jaime is the most mentally strong one. Jaime was his to protect. But will he forgive Franco for leaving him? The author showed their relationship, at the best and worst and seeing them come out on top of all of this is the best feeling. It had a happy ending that is worth reading.

Darkness once twisted Adelaide Dinsmore’s mind, but she thought she had grown out of that. Her job as a teacher in Hedlund proved that – until she discovers one of her students dead and the town turns against her. As her mind starts to crumble, she is offered a new job, this time as a governess for Gentleman Bennett’s granddaughter back east.

Bennett Hall is a sprawling manor of winding tunnels and manicured lawns, and the fence is really just for show. The little girl, Theodora, is a delight, albeit quiet, and the Bennetts are kind enough, especially the dashing young Joseph. So what if one of the servants sends chills down her spine every time he looks at her? Surely that, and the noises in the night, are figments of her imagination. She won’t allow the past in Hedlund to tarnish her future at Bennett Hall.

Then, Theodora begins to speak of a Villain who haunts secret passages in the manor, and Adelaide stumbles upon a sealed off wing where ghosts whisper from the shadows. Twisted inventions fill the basement and the villagers are wary of the Bennett family.

The longer she stays at Bennett Hall, the less likely her chance for escape, but she cannot leave Theodora or Joseph. The darkness in her mind might be the only thing to save them.

The past won’t let Adelaide go.

Adelaide is a magnet for trouble. She triumphed over the troubles of her childhood only to have tragedy strike again when one of her students dies under suspicious circumstances. Adelaide had my sympathy from the very first page. It is clear she cares for her students and had nothing to do with the death of the young girl, yet the town is determined to blame her. Adelaide isn’t even given a chance to defend herself and is sure her prospects as a teacher are ruined. Miraculously, a position as a governess falls into her lap, but is it too good to be true?

Adelaide is a strong young woman. With the love and support of her parents, she’s overcome the troubles of her past to become an accomplished teacher. When she accepts the position with the Bennett family, Adelaide is once again looking toward the future. However, I immediately suspected that all was not well at Bennett Hall. Theodora is a sweet girl, but everyone else behaves so strangely. Parts of the house and property are sealed off or forbidden, and strange noises haunt the night. The darkness surrounding Bennett Hall is suffocating. I wouldn’t have spent more than one night in such a creepy place, but Adelaide is determined to protect Theodora even if it means putting herself at risk. Joseph is a ray of sunshine at Bennett Hall. His kindness and warmth toward Adelaide immediately won me over. It was a pleasure to watch them fall in love and face the evil in Bennett Hall together.

Secrets of Bennett Hall is a very good read. The eerie atmosphere gave me goosebumps, and as the truth of Bennett Hall’s past is gradually revealed, I was truly horrified. I was on the edge of my seat wondering how it all end, and I must say the conclusion was unexpected. While this book is part to in the Return to Amston series, it stands alone extremely well. I highly recommend Secrets of Bennett Hall to anyone looking for a spine-chilling Gothic tale with a touch of romance.

In “The Last Goodbye,” Cam and Merrick had to battle a village filled with trolls in order to win the right to bring home a golden scroll that would make them wealthy. The plot twists in this tale were a lot of fun. I surprisingly didn’t see any of them coming in advance, so I relished the chance to be surprised by what was going on in these characters’ lives before more details were revealed about who they were as individuals.

Most of the stories in this anthology were quite short. While I enjoyed diving into the different worlds for such brief periods of time, there were multiple instances where it would have been helpful to have more information about who the characters were. Something that is only a few pages long simply doesn’t have a lot of room to explore someone’s backstory or conflicts in life. There were times when this was an issue for me as a reader. For example, “Date Night” was about a woman preparing to go on a first date. Her entire story was finished in less than two pages, so there wasn’t time to explore her backstory or explain why she was being so meticulous about making sure she had everything she needed for the evening. I enjoyed the twist at the end, but it would have been nice to know more about who she really was and why she had such an unusual approach to dating.

“Taking It Back” began with a bang when an ordinary stretch of road was suddenly transformed into a lush, green field of grass. As many more manmade structures began to also disappear into thin air and be replaced by living things like trees and vines, I couldn’t help but to wonder what was causing all of this and if it would be permanent. The descriptions of the transformations were so vivid that I felt as though I were watching them happen right in front of me. I was also fascinated by how humans were affected by all of these drastic changes in their lives.

If you like flash fiction and similar short pieces of work, I’d recommend checking out Tantalizing Tales of the Horrific and Fantastic.

The chase is on, and Dewey is determined to pop that final bubble.

This was such an imaginative story. I adored the fact that Dewey was so determined to hunt down and pop the final bubble he’d blown that he didn’t allow anything to stand in the way of him attempting to reach his goal. The plot twists that unfolded as he chased the bubble across town and to places even further away than that were truly delightful.

I would have liked to see a little more time spent explaining how Dewey was able to talk his way onto some of the buildings and flying contraptions that he used to figure out where his bubble was headed next. So much time was spent showing how the beginning of this tale happened that I would have liked to see the same attention paid once the plot sped up and the stakes grew higher. With that being said, this is a minor criticism of something I enjoyed quite a bit overall.

The ending was absolutely perfect. While I did suspect earlier on in the storyline that something like it was going to happen, I still had a wonderful time seeing if my prediction would come true. When I realized I was right, it only made me enjoy the final scene even more because of how happy I was that I thought of it ahead of time. Mr. Eaton didn’t leave many clues at all about how everything would end. Catching on them took some thinking, and I’m glad I paid such close attention to what he did share about the ending early on.

Pop! is something I’d especially recommend to anyone who has a vivid imagination or who wonders what it would be like to have one.

Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a fourteenth story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It’s actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way. With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves.

Business is good . . .

When I finished this book the first word I thought of was — Wow!

Paranormal monsters come in various shapes and sizes and most of them are in this book. Vampires, werewolfs, ghouls, gargoyles, wights and anything else you can think of — they’re all in this book. As the title says this is about Monster Hunter International, a company that finds and disposes of monsters, sometimes with the FBI and sometimes in spite of the FBI.

Owen (or Z) is the main character and he’s big, an expert fighter and does not believe in monsters. His mind is changed when his boss turns into a werewolf and tries to kill him. He survives and is offered a job with MHI.

This book is fast moving, intense and has one aim in sight. To get rid of the seven master vampires and the Cursed One who has immeasurable powers. Owen finds himself the pivot of this job when he talks to an ancient Monster Hunter in his dreams.

The intensity of the story is kept going not only by the savage fights between monsters and hunters, but also the knowledge that the Cursed One is heading for the Place of Power to finish the world as it is today. They have to dispose of him before he gets reaches his destination.

I have to say this book is admirably written and flows without any hiccups at all. I liked the fact Owen might have been big and strong but he wasn’t a macho man and knew he had a lot to learn about monster hunting. There’s the usual antagonist within the group, plus a tendency for the monsters to make a beeline for him but the other characters also get their day of fighting. Excellent book, as I said at the beginning. Wow!

Do you want to know what it’s like to die, to kill, to really fear for your life? Then get hooked…

Detroit-based homicide detective John Barnes has seen it all—literally. Thanks to a technologically advanced machine, detectives have access to the memories of the living, the dying, and the recently dead. But extracting victims’ experiences firsthand and personally reliving everything up to the final, brutal moments of their lives—the sights, the sounds, the scents, the pain—is also the punishment reserved for the criminals themselves.

Barnes has had enough. Enough of the memories that aren’t his. Enough of the horror. Enough of the voices inside his head that were never meant to take root…until a masked serial killer known as Calavera strikes a little too close to home.

Now, with Calavera on the loose, Barnes is ready to reconnect, risking his life—and his sanity. Because in the mind of this serial killer, there is one secret even Barnes has yet to see…

What if you could sell your memories so that others could experience them? Better yet, what if your final moments were caught on tape in a way that could help solve your own murder? Wonder no longer because that’s exactly what’s happening in Detroit thanks to an invention simply known as the machine. Step back, Detective John Barnes is on the case – and in your mind.

Detective John Barnes isn’t your ordinary law enforcement officer. He actually has a very special skill – he’s well versed in the uses of The Machine – making him more in-demand than other homicide detectives in Detroit. He’s literally seen – and experienced – it all. Barnes’ use of the machine, for both his personal reasons as well as his professional ones, makes for a very interesting character. Once he’s used the machine, the memories never really leave him. They taunt him, the coerce him, they even try to help him sometimes. Often, he feels like he’s losing his mind, but honestly, I think he copes well considering all he’s endured.

The idea of a machine that can extract memories from a person is fascinating to me. Of course, there are those who use the machine for pleasurable pursuits, but that’s only natural. Who wouldn’t want to step into the shoes of their favorite celebrity, athlete, or musician? But the application it was used for in the book – to see the last moments of a homicide victim’s life – is revolutionary. Calavera fascinated me as well. Between the poems and the sugar skull mask, he wasn’t quite like anything I had encountered before.

The author did an excellent job of bringing the idea to life and I’m eager to see what Barnes and his fellow officers get up to in the sequel. As someone who reads a lot of crime fiction and police procedurals, Punishment definitely was something new and exciting and I’m anxious for more.

During Justina’s time travels she learns why the past keeps pulling her back into Laurice Haywoods’ world back in 1932.

The past never really dies.

Justina was a sweet and likeable protagonist. Her studious but also curious personality appealed to me quite a bit. It’s always nice to read about someone who takes their education seriously while at the same time being open to new adventures. I also appreciated the fact that she was so honest about all of the things that made her feel anxious. At first I wondered why someone who was returning to a college she’d attended the previous year would worry so much about the logistics of moving back into the dorms, but as I got to know this character better I came to understand the way she thought and why change unnerved her so much. She seemed like the kind of person that would be a lot of fun to hang out with once she’d had a chance to adjust to her surroundings and settle into a routine.

This story would have benefitted from another round of editing before it was published. I noticed many repetitive, run-on, and fragmentary sentences in it. There were also some punctuation errors in certain sentences that I found difficult to understand because of how many different ways they could be interpreted. If not for these editing and punctuation issues, I would have chosen a much higher rating. The plot itself was fascinating, and I couldn’t wait to find out if Justina would ever figure out why she kept being pulled into the past.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about this book was the connection it made between the past and the present. Some events are so important that the repercussions of them can still be felt many decades later. Ms. Beauregard did a good job showing how something that happened in the 1930s could still be so very relevant to life in the present day.

The Mirror in My Dorm Room should be read by anyone who loves time travel tales.

I fell in love with Marisol and Thor. The book starts with them being kidnapped, becoming captives and being tortured. The author made sure that these scenes of torture were subtle and not too hard for the eyes.

Her Viking Dom can be read as a stand-alone. However, there were instances that I felt like I was missing something or didn’t understand it as well as I could have if I had started reading from the beginning of the series. I could have understood the relationship and the characters a bit more if I had done so.

The beginning was slow but with their capture, it built and built and brought me back to the book time and time again.

The plot was about an enemy kidnapping the couple. They do escape and that’s what gave me insight as to how they would act or be with each other outside of captivity. It was a party. Fun and really hot! Marisol has a mind of her own when it comes to some things. She is independent but attracted to Thor like a moth to a flame.

When they get home and the story heads for the climax, I expected a lot of things. But, it took a 180 degree turn and went from a simple romance to shifters and magic. The author did a great job with introducing these new elements to the already packed novel.

Her Viking Dom is perfect for readers who love their romance with a bit of something else added in.
