The characters in this story lived in a world where it was possible to transfer pain from one person to another. While Penny and Noah couldn’t fix the underlying health problems that caused their adult daughter so much suffering, they were able to take turns feeling it for her in order to give her some relief. I was fascinated by this concept as soon as the narrator described it in the opening scene. It struck me as something that could be both a lifesaver as well as something that could have unforeseen consequences. The more I read about it, the more I wanted to know. I simply had to know how this system worked, and I was quite pleased with how much attention to detail the author paid to it.

I would have liked to see a little more time developing the ending. There was a plot twist there that was as surprising as it was gripping. After suddenly realizing how much it was going to affect all of the characters’ lives, it was a bit disappointing to not be able to see how all of those changes were going to play out for them. Imagining it was amusing, but I would have liked to at least had a hint of what the author thought was going to be the logical conclusion of this twist.

Not every character has to be likeable in order to be memorable. The author did a good job of rounding out the two main characters in this tale no matter how they decided to behave. While I’m still not sure I’d want to meet one of them, I did find it interesting to compare their most negative traits to the kind things they’d done as well. That nuance helped me to learn to appreciate this character regardless of what I thought of some of their choices.

A Burden Shared was a truly creative piece of science fiction. It should be read by anyone who is in the mood for something out of the ordinary.

It would have been helpful to have a more detailed explanation of what was going on in the final scene. The clues that were provided weren’t quite enough for me put all of the pieces together. Even now I’m not entirely sure that my understanding of the end was what the author meant to say. Had this section been clearer to me, I would have felt comfortable choosing a higher rating for this book.

The description of Kristine and Noel’s marriage was well written. They’d been together for so long that they were obviously quite comfortable around each other. Seeing such a settled and stable couple go through a horrifying experience that defied explanation made it impossible for me to stop reading. I simply had to know what would happen to them next.

Dark Warm Heart made me shudder. It should be read by anyone who finds joy in being frightened.

The author has built a very interesting and different world. There were words that I only started to understand after I finished reading one third of the book. Though, I was expecting more in terms of explaining what the words meant it in no way hindered my ability to finish reading it.

This is a part of a series and it can definitely be read as a stand-alone. There were a lot of different species and a couple pieces of information that took me so long to understand, it became disconcerting.

Abaddon Rising is set in a futuristic world that ensnared me until the end.

I was excited to see this book pop up for review – I had read Ms. Snowy’s previous book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was not at all disappointed with this novel.

Ms. Snowy drops the reader squarely in the story with Montague and Harm imprisoned and Harm unconscious. I found myself wondering if this was the second part of a series and I had somehow missed the first book. Not to fear, though, I soon found myself caught up in the story.

I love these characters… especially Loom, a mute with a talent for communication, and Nolsun, who is caught up in the quest through no fault of his own. Their quest is saving villages… and they wander from village to village completing this task. Harm never remembers what happens once he becomes “the Legend” and Montague has to tell him the next morning. Harm trusts him without question.

There is more to this story that meets the eye and I cannot reveal more without major spoilers. This is a fun book—it’s an easy read and the characters are well worth spending a few hours with. Thanks, Ms. Snowy… I look forward to your next work.

The world building was excellent. From the very first paragraph, I was completely immersed in the highly regimented and futuristic society that Detective Track lived in. His choices in life were controlled so much by the corporation he worked for that I wondered how he was ever going to find the opportunity to figure out what was really making some of the other people around him disappear. He didn’t have a lot of resources at his disposal, so that made every clue he found even more precious than it might have otherwise been.

I would have liked to see more time devoted to character development. While I got to know the main character pretty well, he didn’t change very much as a person from the first scene to the last one despite the fact that he had a lot of experiences that could have been the catalyst for all kinds of personal development for him. I wouldn’t have expected something as fast-paced and plot-oriented as this book to go into a great deal of detail about a character’s growth, but it would have been nice to see some of it to round out what was otherwise a very good read.

The technological advancements in this tale blew my mind. I was especially fascinated by how Detective Track’s society had adjusted to all of the robotic elements that had been added to it by this point. They lived in a time and place where medicine and engineering had figured out how to do all sorts of incredible things for even their poorest citizens. I truly enjoyed reading about all of the advancements that the author imagined might be commonplace in the future.

Missing Remnants should be read by anyone who enjoys the thought of a science fiction novel that has a lot of mystery elements in it.

One of the biggest reasons why I was so curious to read this tale was because I couldn’t wait to see how Cu, the enhanced chimpanzee, was going to be portrayed. She had a very ape-like approach to the world that made me feel as though I really were watching a chimpanzee attempt to solve a crime with her partner. There were pacing issues. After an exciting opening scene, things slowed down for the characters. This made it tricky for me to remain as interested in their case as I’d been in the beginning due to how much time was passing from one revelation to the next. If not for this issue, I would have chosen a much higher rating for this tale.

The technological advances in this universe were impressive. Not only was a chimpanzee able to integrate into human society almost seamlessly, there were many other advancements that had been made that were just as impressive as this one. For example, humans had become capable of doing things with the help of certain types of technology that simply wouldn’t be possible in our current time. I can’t say much else about this without giving away spoilers, but I did enjoy imagining what it would be like to live in a place where so many almost-magical things were viewed as completely commonplace for the characters in this world.

Meat and Salt and Sparks mixed plenty of mystery elements into this scifi tale. I’d recommend it to fans of both genres.

This was a delightful book! I loved the characters and their geekiness (and the non-geeky characters, especially Gabe’s sister…she made me laugh at her computer ineptness, especially juxtaposed against Gabe). It’s great to watch Pi (the AI) change as she learns more and more. The dialogue was quick, snappy, and natural.

It’s also interesting to see how Gabe himself changed over the course of the book – a definite character growth going on.

Take a chance on this witty, easily read gem… I’m glad I did.

The plot grabbed me and made me want to read on, while the light heartedness made the story even more enjoyable. What helped to keep my interest was I couldn’t work out the solution to the mystery. There were hints but not enough to make me positive I’d solved where all the lost boys were going. Add to this a little bit of romance which was more Alex’s fluttering heart than anything else, and you have a very good book.

This is a book I would be quite happy to read a second time.

Lake, the main character, had a complicated relationship with her young son. She cared about him quite a bit, but she also had unreasonably rigid expectations of what sort of child he should be. Every time he failed to live up to her expectations, I wondered how she was going to react to that and if she’d learn how to accept him for who he was instead of pushing him to be someone he wasn’t. There were times when it was difficult to see her project her desires onto him so relentlessly, but I was always intrigued by the justifications she came up with for her behavior.

It would have been nice to have a few more details about the setting. For example, it was never quite clear to me how the virtual world that Lake wanted to spend all of her time in made enough money to stay viable. Characters who lived in the real world had to work for a living, so I could only assume there’d need to be some sort of virtual economy as well to pay for things like electricity and upkeep of the highly sophisticated computer programs that people lived in.

One of the other things that Ms. Prell excelled at in this tale was describing how mental illness can affect every facet of someone’s life. Lake’s diagnosis was never entirely clear, but she was obviously struggling with the conflict between the parent she wished she could be and the parent she actually was to her kid. These struggles extended to other parts of this character’s life as well, from her occupation to her relationship with the father of her son.

I’d recommend The Need for Air to anyone who has ever had mixed emotions about someone or something that they loved.

Personally, I really liked this but I have a feeling readers who are really into their Sci-Fi might not find this a different enough world and perspective to satisfy them. I was also pretty happy that Karl and Teddy start their relationship pretty much immediately and the sex is both smoking hot and very quick off the bat. It’s clear that a deeper emotional connection will be forthcoming and the romance side of their relationship wasn’t left behind – but Karl and Teddy do jump into bed together almost immediately and their kinky sex is definitely hot enough for the explicit rating of the story.

I was intrigued, therefore, that the fact Teddy is an Empath – a person who can pick up and feel the emotions of people in the near vicinity – didn’t even get mentioned until after the first quarter or so of the story. It’s not that I felt there was something wrong with this, I was just a little surprised by how it felt like quite a bit of the story had rolled along before this got raised. This also made me realise that a lot of the book is told from Karl’s perspective and so there was a lot to Teddy and his character that I didn’t know. This led me to a whole host of questions about Teddy and his life.

I was really pleased when Teddy and Karl began talking more personally – particularly about Teddy’s particular brand of empathy – and I honestly found it both really interesting and a good, fresh kind of perspective on the whole situation. The fact it fit perfectly into what Karl was seeking in a sexual partner was slightly too coincidental, but I could happily and easily overlook this for the fact there was so much about the situation that I’d never read about before. There are two previous books in this same world – but this read as very much a stand-alone style of book – there was no mention of the four previous main characters and while it’s set in the same world I strongly feel this story can be picked up and read without anything being read prior by this author.

I think this was a great story full of steamy hot BDSM sex, two very interesting characters and a fresh twist on the whole set-up of their situation. There were enough differences from a more traditional BDSM style book that I found it refreshing and it kept my attention happily all through it. I’d happily recommend this book to readers and am eagerly awaiting the next one which will hopefully come out soon.
