This story is a quick read… but maybe a little too quick. With its strong characters and storyline I think this book could have developed into a more intense and longer story that would have packed even more of a punch. As it stands, though, this story is a touching one with some humor and emotion thrown in. My One has a good storyline and if you are interested in a love story with spice, this story is for you.

There is a baddie in this story, but he’s not who you think and the twist is great. Readers can identify with the struggle to belong in the alien nation as well as the need to be with the one he or she loves.

If you want a story that is a break from the norm and has some sizzling love scenes, then you need to read Spring Rites. I give this book 3.5 cherries.

The book was a short, quick read. The main characters were engaging and believable. I had a hard time with opening the book in the POV of a victim. Since readers tend to latch onto the first character they set eyes on in a book, killing him off on page two set me aback. I had to adjust to the “Whose story is this?” all over again. The weakness was in the editing. I think it could have used some tightening, some spots that would have worked better with less telling, more active tense. I wish it could have been longer. It wrapped up awfully fast.

But I enjoyed it overall. I liked spending time with Ashling and Blake, and I liked the pro-truthfulness theme. Lying to each other in a relationship never works out. Glad these two learned that.

There are also, however, some slower moments, and I felt that too much of what was truly important was told, rather than shown, early on. Then when Ms. Judson shifted gears many pages on, seemingly assuming the reader would understand her reference, I couldn’t always follow along.

Jessy is a sweet woman still trying to figure out what to do with her life three years after the end of her lackluster marriage. I admired her ability to be blunt but kind, to tell Conrad how she really felt, and to survive her scheming sister and indifferent mother’s visit. And when she got the chance to pursue her dream, I cheered for her even as I wondered what she was doing leaving behind 6’5” of hot, devoted man. The other characters, however, fell sort of flat. We did not learn much about their history or motivations.

Ms. Judson was a little heavy handed with her theme that we are all animals, there were occasional minor but distracting editing gaffes, and just as a personal preference I do not care for the author calling cocks “meat”, but all in all, Animals was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to fans of hot romantic suspense.
