She’s hardly a cowgirl… Cat Crendall left a successful advertising job in New York to teach art workshops in the wild west. The Boyd Ranch is hardly her dream destination, but if the outing’s a success, the company will send her to more exotic locations. But once a cowboy… Mack Boyd was in the middle of the best bronc-riding season of his life when his mother asked for help with an artists’ retreat at the ranch. Mack might be able to ride a wild stallion to a standstill but he can’t say no to his family. Cat and Mack are complete opposites…but when the ranch is threatened financially, can they set aside their differences and work together?

She’s what he never saw coming. He’s just what she needs.

I love a good opposites attract story. Cat dreams of so much more than the country. It’s not in her blood. She wants Paris, elegance…something not dirty and grubby. Except her dreams haven’t led her to Paris. Nope. She’s in Wyoming.

Then there’s Mack. He’s at home on a bronc. He’ll run the ranch if it means helping his family, but his heart lies elsewhere. Until he meets Cat. Suddenly, roots aren’t so bad.

I like how these two are polar opposites. Dirt doesn’t bother him and she’s not so sure she wants to be there. Then again, she’s got an elegance he’s not totally convinced he knows what to do with.

Ms. Kennedy’s writing succeeds in two major places. One, I felt like I was right there in the Wyoming landscape with these characters. I could see the vastness and wanted to go there. I’ve never been out west that far, but yeah, I want to go there. Ms. Kennedy also succeeds in the fish out of water story. Cat doesn’t feel she belongs in Wyoming. She’s not thrilled to be on a ranch. I felt what Cat felt and cheered for her to get her HEA. I mean, with Mack as the prize, yeah, I’d want to figure out how to stick around, too.

If you want a book that flows, one that immerses you in the action, then this is the book for you!

She’s still single, but not because she’s been waiting for Spence to return. After all, he left without saying goodbye. When he appears in front of her on a street corner, however, old feelings are brought to the forefront.

Spence is a small town boy turned Hollywood star. His life in the fast lane gets him involved in a scandal that likely spells disaster for his career. It is a disheartened Spence that heads back to his hometown looking for some comfort and acceptance. What he finds is a small town that is slowly dying due to economic downturn and more than a few bridges that he burned on his way out of town. Spence finds himself drawn to the girl he left behind all those years ago but Val is still sore at the way he left and that anger comes exploding out more than once. She’s afraid of the inevitable heartbreak when Spence decides to move on again. So she spends most of the story pushing him away.

The romance part of the story was slow and sweet. As a single parent Val was careful and guarded and kept waiting for Spence to disappoint her yet again.  This made the story all the more believable. The primary focus of this story was on Spence and his self discovery. Once again, this was a slow process with Spence realizing the need to rebuild the broken relationships in his life. This story was well developed with Spence investing himself in the revitalization of his hometown. The heat factor was a little mild for my personal reading taste but because the characters were so compelling, I truly enjoyed every minute of this story.

I’d recommend this one to all contemporary romance fans.

Mary Burton is an established author. This is her thirteenth book. I’ve read her work before and was glad to get the opportunity to read this new book. Ms. Burton writes action packed stories with lots of tension and suspense. You don’t have time to be bored, she never gives away the bad guy early, and she generally packs a punch in her endings. This book lived up to all that hype.

Lara is survivor. She was attacked by the Seattle Strangler and survived. She can’t help with the case because she has amnesia about the attack. Years have passed, she’s been to doctor after doctor trying to unlock those memories, and she still cannot recall anything. When the killer appears to have resurfaced in Austin, TX, the cops really want her to try to remember again. She refuses until the mother of one of the victims makes her own appeal. Then she tries…

I had suspicions about who the killer was. I was half right. This author always manages to sucker punch me with her endings. I would never have guessed the Seattle Strangler’s identity. Neither did anyone in the story.

This story winds around the past and the present and ties it all together as you reach the conclusion of the story. It’s a good thing Lara has a Texas Ranger in love with her; she’ll need him for more than her bed before the end of the story.

When you sit down to read this, make sure you set some time aside to do it. You won’t want to put it down…

Do you ever feel such a powerful attraction to someone, like you’ve known them for so long, but they are a stranger to you? Can you really rule out the possibility of a past life? Open up your eyes, and your heart, to a situation that is truly hard to believe, but for Taylor and Ian, it may be the only explanation. Now, if only they could keep out of trouble or harm’s way long enough to sort through this strange mystery….

Taylor is one of those women you don’t want to mess with. What a great leading lady. She has a slight fragile tone to her, but she’s really anything but. Taylor’s had a past that is a bit bumpy, and things aren’t getting better at the moment. She has strange fears, and dreams that she only wishes she could come to understand, and Ian, the stranger that he is, seems so familiar, too. But things aren’t going to be made easy for Taylor. Does that mean she’s going to go down without a fight? Oh, no. Definitely not. C’mon, Taylor, beat the odds!

Ian can’t explain his odd fixation on Taylor, he just knows he wants to be near her, with her, around her. He can’t stop thinking about her, even though he can’t explain why. He too, has to open his mind to the unimaginable. With every step of trouble Taylor walks into, Ian isn’t far behind, saving her, over and over. There are secrets to uncover, and neither of them will enjoy rehashing the past.

From the beginning, I had a huge interest in this story. The pace starts out a bit slow, but it definitely picks up, keeping up the hype and the suspense about Taylor and Ian. It only gets more intense as the book goes on. With a well crafted plot, very well done characters, and plenty of mystery to keep things on the edge, Silence Echoes is one of those stories that weaves the reader in and keeps a tight hold. You should see my hands…a little red with the grip marks.

From what I gathered, this may be the second book in a series. Some of the characters seemed like they had a story prior. Regardless, I wasn’t pulled away from it or confused, so if it Is a series, it’s not extremely important that they be read in order.

For a great mystery, a mix of paranormal, and a heck of a romance all bundled into one book, you should give Silent Echoes a chance.

Set during the pre-Revolutionary War era of 1769, The Forbidden Lady is classic Kerrelyn Sparks storytelling. Fans of her Love at Stake series are already familiar with her terrific writing voice. This is a different side of a fantastic storyteller but no less entertaining. I think sometimes writers become known for a genre and then try to switch to something completely different and lose their initial fanbase. I don’t see this being the case for Ms. Sparks. Previously released under the title of For Love or Country, The Forbidden Lady is packed with action and suspense I didn’t want to see end.

The lady who catches Quin’s eye and sends his well placed plans into a tail spin is the lovely Virgina (Ginny) Munro. She’s nosy and inconvenient but Quin can’t seem to leave her alone. Their confrontations are full of sexual tension and just as often downright funny. I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion.

Ms. Spark’s story will grab the attention of James Bond enthusiast as well when they realize Quin comes ready to do some serious spy work with gadgetry that’s appropriate for the era. Nothing over the top or outrageous but no less clever in its design.

Without giving away the ending I will say not everyone will appreciate its subtleties. Ms. Sparks gives the reader plenty to think about and dwell on in regards to Quin and Ginny’s future. There’s no doubt that they’re together, it’s a romance after all, but the story continues on well after the last page. Read it and I think you’ll understand.

Being at the wrong place at the wrong time, Lanie Delacor ends up with a killer following her. Will handsome PA State Trooper TJ McGraw be able to resist the attraction for her and protect her from the killer?

The novel slowly drew me in during the rest stop encounter and the actual event that set the chance meeting of Lanie Delacor and PA State Trooper TJ McGraw. In my opinion, the parts that build your suspense were too brief to really draw a reader in. Personally, I wish some of the instances could have been a little more detailed for a more dramatic effect, balancing out the suspense and romance.

I did enjoy the characters, even the family dog and cat. The characters had personalities that were well developed and likeable. I felt the closeness of the friendship among the characters and also the family bond that Lanie had with her late Uncle Charley and the bond between TJ and his mother. These relationships were very realistic.

The romance part was well developed and gave enjoyment of the resistance to the attraction both Lanie and TJ felt. The attraction and chemistry is there between the two main characters but the ending was sort of predictable.

There were a few editing errors, however it did not take away from the story.

The title “cowboy” is bantered about rather loosely and some of the characters are stereotyped, but their actions pull the reader into the tangles of the past, troubles in the present, and plans for the future. Just about every character is on a mission of one kind or the other with few in agreement about desired outcomes.

When thirty-seven year old Elizabeth Murphy, librarian in Bramble, Texas inherits Miss Hattie’s Henhouse, a dilapidated place that was once the infamous Texas bordello, her life takes a hundred and eighty degree turn. If you’ve read previous books in the series, you will recognize many of the secondary characters, but Trouble In Texas stands alone very well. It is about two people who need love so very much. How a man afraid to love because of a curse he believes in and a no-nonsense spinster get together to enjoy sizzling sex, feel a soul mate connection, and survive the meddling of the citizens of Bramble, Texas makes delightful reading.

The reader gets to enjoy both subtle and blatant humor, the unraveling of a-more-than-century old secret, and the many types of love—family, man/woman, friends. The acceptance of human flaws and foibles reveals the uniqueness of individuals and showcase a love for life. The redemption that comes is most rewarding.

Confronted by a mysterious stalker, two murder attempts and dark shadows from her shrouded past, Marie finds an ally in an amorous feline of some unknown species. But who’s got it in for her? And what’s with Anthony and all the cats?

This short story screams “intrigue” from page one. I had so many questions just from reading the description I dove into this book with determination as soon as it hit my inbox.

At first the hero, Anthony, comes across as more of a stiff anti-hero. He’s coarse and abrasive but then he begins referring to Marie as “Kitten” and it honestly had me sighing. There was so much emotion and hope built into that simple moniker, I just knew there was more to Anthony than my first impression. On a side note, Marie gives Anthony a nickname, as well; it too was chock full of (humorous) meaning. She excels at defying this Alpha male. I liked Marie from the very beginning. She’s smart, talented and in no way a wilting flower.

Ms. Bay set the tone for a mystery to solve right away. Anthony offers to pay an extraordinary amount of money to get Marie to his NC estate. She’s supposed to pull off a miracle wedding to celebrate the grand “awaited event” within ten days but without the benefit of a bride or groom to consult. I started getting a clue to the “paranormal” aspect of the book when Marie is confronted by some larger than normal felines and when she sits down to prepare the menu. There’s a distinct lack of green leafy offerings but plenty of fish and rich desserts. It was actually at this point during the planning that I began to think this book was going to be too pat, too textbook convenient.  I had lots of questions and Marie struck me as a character who should have been equally curious or at the very least apprehensive. The events that followed brought a new level to the mysterious happenings as well as gave this reader insight into Marie’s past. It brought the story full circle and provided closure that was satisfying.

Readers who enjoy a bit of intrigue as well as humor with their paranormal will have no trouble be swept into Marie and Anthony’s story. The chemistry between the characters practically crackles on the page. It isn’t soft or subtle and neither Marie nor Anthony is completely sure they like it until they finally give it. And when the night ends, the party doesn’t stop. As Cassie falls, literally, into his bed, James falls head over heels in love. Now he has to figure out a way to tell her the truth: he’s not an escort. He’s her family’s fiercest business rival. But all he wants for Christmas is her . . .

Cassie pays good money for the male escorts she hires and while she doesn’t ask for sex she does require total submission. This holiday’s male attraction doesn’t have a submissive bone in his body and tests Cassie’s limits with his male arrogance and looks that leave all the women trailing after him like stray cats. James may not be what she wants, but he is most certainly what she needs.

Cassie is what I would expect in a successful business woman, smart and determined.  While these qualities make her the right hand woman in the family business it leaves her little room for a personal life. Top that with her no nonsense attitude and need for control and there are more than a few lonely nights for her. That is until she meets James, who seems to challenge her at every available moment which both irritates her and turns her on. I really enjoyed watching her grow as an individual and to realize how important a personal life is to accompany her business success.

James seems to have found the balance that Cassie is lacking to a certain extent. He knows that Cassie is a find and is willing to take the time out to focus on developing the relationship. I also appreciated that while he may have mislead Cassie he did it with good intentions. As many of us know however, sometimes the worst actions come out of the best of intentions. Let’s just hope that his good intentions don’t turn out to be the largest mistake in his life.

The author drew out some real emotions from me when reading this story. There are some parts when I felt frustrated with Cassie’s inability to accept what was in front of her. Then I may find myself laughing out loud at the antics of the characters while trying to fix the relationship or at Cassie’s families humor. I even got angry at other characters such as Cassie’s father. It made the story much more enjoyable and keep the pages turning. I would recommend this story to anyone during the holidays or any other time in the year.

If a reader is searching for a romance story which has an effective outside conflict that doesn’t allow all that drama and suspense to darken the growing relationship between two people, then this book is totally perfect.

What I mean is, A Howl for a Highlander uses the conflict to spice up, speed along and stir the plot making the relationship between Duncan and Shelley possible, fascinating and thoroughly entertaining. How Shelley reacts to Duncan’s edicts showcases how strong a female character she is. When she gets this twinkle in her eye and spouts off naughty dialogue that encourages Duncan’s kilt to rise, it makes for fun reading. When she stands behind her man and growls, she shows us a heroine who is the perfect match for the equally growly hero.

Duncan, on the other hand, is a man who needed taming. For so long he’s been the fixer, the doer and the protector; he’s become used to people jumping when he says to. Shelly doesn’t jump; she glares and does her own thing. I liked that the hero respected her for that. It drove him nuts, absolutely, but in the end, he wouldn’t have her any other way. The most fun aspect of his courting her is his inability to resist her. The scene with that tiny string thing was hot. The whole swimming in the ocean part was sexy and I had a ball reading about the hero fighting all those pirates. And the term, “male pissing contest” sort of took on a whole new meaning in this story. I giggled. I know for the wolf it was a serious thing but then Shelley comes along and did a certain something, it had me appreciating her more while it had Duncan green with jealousy thinking about what “might” happen. He’s such an all-around hunk of a Highlander and he fits the role beautifully.

The villain is potentially a red herring. Because of the dubious nature and the many hoops of conjecture that Duncan and Shelley have to jump through in trying to figure things out while trying to stay alive, I’m not going to explore too much lest I give a crucial plot point away. I’ll just say that in a way, I feel sad for the villain because I really think it’s more nurture than nature that played a roll in choosing the direction of life’s choices. I’m being purposely ambiguous but I can affirm that the villain was well written, cleverly positioned and placed throughout the story as well as effective at being bad. As evil and horrific as “dead bodies in a pool” sounds, it is actually quite comedic and I did laugh. Call me twisted.

Another fun aspect of this story comes from some of the secondary characters. There are some quick cameos from Duncan’s brother Ian, a Cavalry moment with one of the other brothers and Uncle Ethan. I don’t think there’d be a book on its own dedicated to Shelley’s uncle or uncles but they’d sure be a fun secondary line of romance in future books. Just think – gruff, hardened bachelors finding love in the old country with equally staunch and canny wolf-women making them toe the line and the fireworks that ensue – yes, indeed, I saw a hint of that in this book and it made me chuckle.

When the action got a bit tense and eventful, Ms. Spear managed to keep the writing focused and tight, insuring that a reader will experience the effect of heightened blood pressure, quickened breath and, if so inclined, the biting of nails when the big fight/chase scene occurs.

A Howl for a Highlander tells a tale that defines the word, ‘sexy’. There’s nothing more fun than being seduced by a confident Scottish Highlander who doesn’t mind letting you know what’s under his kilt. What is more refreshing is reading about a woman who is not intimidated by him in the least, but stands nose to nose, tail to tail and comes out on top – at least for a little while. Add to that, the very tantalizing descriptions of a man and his first Speedo and a reader has a lot to smile about while reading this latest adventure by Ms. Spear. My advice to readers is to leave plenty of time to kick back and visit with Duncan and Shelley because once started, this book is hard to put down. It’s that fun.
