It took me a while to really grasp and understand Lanyon’s character. I could accept this, as the book is seventh in the series, but I did find myself (particularly at the start) wishing the author had given a bit more detail and fleshing out of Lanyon’s character and motivations since I didn’t have any of the previous history of the other books to fall back on and simply know or accept some of his actions and desires. After the first few chapters when a number of different plots began to converge the larger picture began to clear for me and I really started to enjoy the story – and Lanyon’s character – a great deal more.

I enjoyed the quick pace of the story, finding that the plot progressed smoothly and it helped the book roll right along. Readers who enjoy a complicated plot with a number of moving parts should find this full length story really fits the bill. With a number of different species and planets all woven together I feel this detailed Sci-Fi world and set of characters should really fit the bill to fans of this genre.

Fast moving and with strong and interesting characters, this is a good and engrossing read. Recommended.

This story had such a unique method of time travel. It’s not something I’ve come across in this subgenre before, and I’ve read a ton of it! The fact that the author was able to surprise me only made me more curious to keep reading. They had a lot of obstacles in their paths, and their contact was so limited that I really wondered how it would all work.

I would have liked to see more time spent describing the characters and settings in this tale. I enjoyed the plot twists quite a bit, but I had trouble picturing what was happening because of how little time was spend explaining what everyone and everything looked like. If this had happened, I would have selected a much higher rating for it as the premise itself was creative and thought provoking.

The friendship between Edith and Adelaide made me smile. Both of these characters had such sweet, gentle personalities that I was thrilled to see them become good friends as quickly as they did. They were perfect for each other in every way, so I wanted them to spend as much time as possible treating each other with all of the kindness and respect they both deserved.

The writing is crisp and the story moved fast. There were times it almost moved too fast, but it’s a short story, so there isn’t much time to linger. I liked that it kept me guessing as to who the caped man might be. There were a few twists I didn’t see coming, that’s for sure.

A bit more on the editing front would’ve made this a four star read for me. But it’s such a fun and fast read that most readers will enjoy it.

If you’re interested in a paranormal story that’s a little off the beaten path, then this might be the one for you.

Consequently, Zel never learned much about magic or how truly powerful her own unique abilities are. When the magical community of Los Angeles fails to locate Sonny or who took him, Zel finds herself with an unlikely ally.

Henry is a man with a past as troubled as Zel’s. When Zel walks into Archetype Place looking for help, Henry finds himself inexplicably drawn to her. After a tragic loss, Henry closed himself off from everyone and everything. He goes through the motions of life without truly living. When I got a good look at the way Henry lived, it broke my heart. When Henry meets Zel, he finds himself caring about another person for the first time in decades. Unfortunately, neither of them are in an ideal position to embark on a romance. Still, I saw an undeniable spark of attraction between them. As I read, I kept my fingers crossed in hopes they would find their way to a happy ending.

As Zel and Henry investigate Sonny’s disappearance, I enjoyed watching Zel gain confidence in her abilities. Henry offers guidance and advice in magical matters but really allows Zel to flex her magical muscles as well. They make a great team. I will say the conclusion of the mystery felt a bit abrupt. So much happens to Henry and Zel in such a short amount of time, and there was a lot of build up before Henry and Zel really got moving on their investigation. It seemed as if they’d barely started when suddenly it was all over! Despite this issue, the conclusion made sense and was satisfying.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to read Hidden Charm. Henry and Zel’s story is compelling and the mystery of Sonny’s disappearance is intriguing. I recommend Hidden Charm to anyone who enjoys fairytales with a twist.

The story opens with the heroine learning how to defend herself. Her character isn’t one who is comfortable with violence but learning to protect herself is very important. She has a skill like her sisters but there’s a huge difference that I didn’t expect. Her gift is relatively ignored but by choice. She had a scare when she was a kid and I can certainly understand her extreme hesitancy to utilize her gift. I was actually pretty frustrated by that in the beginning of the story but as time went on, I saw the author develop a different kind of strength for the heroine. It comes from Sorcha’s heart and when it came for her time in the spotlight, I liked the author’s choice.

If you have been following the series, you understand the meaning of the stones. Sorcha was thrown for a bit because they said one thing but her heart told her another. What does she do? You’ll have to read it to find out but I figured out the secret much earlier than the heroine.

There is just the right amount of suspense when the heroine is in jeopardy. The bad guys are what I come to expect and are written effectively and convincingly. More is learned about the Circle of Five and my favorite character to despise, The Chameleon, made an appearance. The plot thickens.

The secondary cast of characters supported the hero and heroine but I didn’t find them distracting. That means that I consider How to Love Your Elf as a possible standalone read. There are references to the previous stories because they are Sorcha’s sisters, but the focus of this novel is Sorcha and The Woodsman.

The scenes when the hero and heroine finally enjoy the release of all that pent-up passion for each other were well written and enjoyable.

What happened to the evil queen was something I did not expect. However, the ritual for one of the characters totally makes what happened more believable. What happens for the ritual, the why of it and the history completely fascinated me. I was impressed with its originality.

All in all, How to Love Your Elf is a really good read. It’s fun, absolutely entertaining and a great addition to the series. It has a wonderful happy ever after too. What it also has is foreshadowing for the next book in the series. Maeve has grown up during the telling of her sisters’ previous adventures and romances, and it looks like she’s ready for her turn. Ms. Sparks has set it up perfectly because there is no way I want to miss her story, especially since I suspect my favorite dog character is going to finally come out of the background and into the spotlight. I can’t wait!

Janelle and Janiece were such sweet girls. I enjoyed seeing how they reacted to their unexpected time travel and how they adapted to life before computers, smartphones, or any of the other conveniences of our modern age. There was so much fodder here for funny misunderstandings or for either of these characters to be mystified by 1980s technology like VCRs. I’d sure be interested in reading a sequel in which this stuff is explored if the author is ever interested in writing it.

This story would have benefited from having more details included in it. For example, the narrator never really explained how Janiece and Janelle managed to accidentally travel back into time. They bumped their heads together, but nothing else was mentioned about how a small accident could have had such a huge consequences. Their conversations with their grandmother about life in the 1980s was similarly brushed over. I saw so much potential in scenes like these. If only the narrator had described exactly what happened in them.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about it had to do with how many different age groups it could appeal to. There were sections of it that would be perfect for children who are just learning how to read chapter books, and there were other sections that I thought would appeal to readers several years older than that. This seems like something that would be a great choice for a family, daycare, or other group of listeners that has both younger and older elementary students in it.

Meeting Grandmom should be read by anyone who has ever wondered what their parents’ childhoods were really like.

The relationships between the children and their dolls, stuffed animals, and other objects were so sweet. It was also simply a sweet memory of what sounds like had been a wonderful time in their lives.

I would have liked to see more details included in the tale. The thought of toys getting up and moving around at night is a fascinating one, especially since they can communicate well with each other in this universe. It sure would have been nice to know where these abilities came from, what exactly the toys said to each other, and how their society worked. There was a lot of room here for adding more details about all of this.

It was interesting to find out what happens to toys who have too much competition for their child’s attention. This wasn’t a potential source of conflict I’d ever thought about before, but the author’s approach to it was a creative one. The more I learned, the more curious I became about the sequels.

This story is the first instalment in a series.

I’d recommend The Underground Toy Society to anyone who has ever had a favorite toy they want to keep forever.

Gracie’s interaction with the secondary characters is charming. They help us to see and understand our protagonist better.

Period details are well-written, so readers can easily picture the era.

This is a good tale of young love and adventure. Gracie’s Time is fourth in a series, but the author fills in the necessary blanks with helpful information. The ending leaves some questions unanswered, leaving room for a continuation of the story.

The world building made me smile. There was a great deal of effort put into showing how superheroes in this universe were different from the ones that some readers might be expecting. For example, they weren’t universally liked for reasons I’ll leave up to other readers to discover for themselves. Explaining and exploring details like these brought this world to life for me. No sooner would one of my questions about how everything worked would be answered than a couple more would spring into place. It was a great deal of fun to figure all of this out.

I found the pacing of the beginning of this book to be slow. The main character had plenty of explaining to do about the world he lived in and the alternate universe he was about to discover. As intrigued as I am by superheroes, I found it hard to get into Bill’s story because of how slowly everything happened in the first several chapters.

The fight scenes were nicely written. I’ve been reading Mr. Frankel’s stories for years now, and his approach to writing about this sort of conflict has evolved in all sorts of interesting ways since I was first introduced to his stuff. It’s been a great deal of fun to see the different techniques he uses to describe what is happening in them and how he approaches a conflict that has multiple folks jumping into the fray all at once. I look forward to hopefully reading more of these scenes in his future work!

Stand-In should be read by anyone who likes superheroes.
