I liked the world building. Exactly the right amount of time was spent describing who God was and how he differed from the average person’s understanding of him. His species was a unique one, and there were plenty of things about how their society worked that stretched my mind in a good way. I enjoyed the process of getting to know this character as he campaigned to remain the deity in charge of Earth.

The pacing was often slow and uneven. As excited as I was by the blurb, I had trouble focusing on the storyline in certain spots because of how much time it took for the plot to develop new twists or for the characters to react to the old ones. It sure would have been helpful to have more stuff happening in general. The blurb was certainly filled with great ideas that were never fully explored.

There was so much humor woven into this story. I was wonderfully surprised by how often it made me chuckle. The author did a good job of using different sorts of jokes, too, from irreverent moments to gentle jabs at all sorts of assumptions a reader might make about what God would or wouldn’t want from humans. These scenes were clearly meant to not only make the audience laugh but to keep the plot moving forward as well. I liked the way Mr. Oldbury made sure they fulfilled both purposes equally.

The Universal Guide to Human Racing should be read by anyone who likes tongue-in-cheek books.

There were times when I wished that the paranormal themes were explained a little more clearly. Peter had an experience in one particular scene involving an animal that was beautifully described without giving the audience any hints about what it meant. As much as I enjoyed the process of putting clues together in general, I did need more help figuring this one out.

The horror themes were subtle but incredibly well done. I’m a huge fan of being scared by psychological means, so I was quite happy to see this included in the plot. Peter had good reason to be frightened in certain scenes. While there were plenty of other things going in, including those moments was critical to explaining what was happening and why it was happening. The author did a great job of communicating this to the audience while still expecting us to put certain things together on our own.

This is part of a series that can be read in any order the reader prefers. Anyone who enjoys it should definitely check out the rest of the Red Grouse Tales, too.

The Blue Horse was a delightful read that drew me back into a world I thought I might not get to visit again. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

If there were one thing I loved more than Parker’s confession, it would be the message of this story in general. It was brimming with kindness for every single character in it. That’s something I relish finding everything I read, but it’s especially nice to discover it in tales written for young readers. Knowing how it all ends only makes me more eager to start again at the beginning when the main character tries to figure out how to word his letter to Santa without bending the truth.

Dear Santa was a heartwarming picture book that I can’t recommend highly enough.

This is billed as the third book in The Coldwater Pack series, but I was able to read it as a standalone without losing any of the story. Saying that, I do think it would be a good idea to read them in order as I have wondered if Liam’s illness was mentioned in any of the other books.

Brey just wanted to be with Liam yet he walked away. Brey leaves too, choosing to go to a university far away from the Pack. However, her hormones kick in and things need to change. This is definitely a case of the male choosing for both of them, not even considering that his mate may actually want a say in her own life. There is danger in here for Brey and Liam wants to protect her. He will need to ingratiate himself though, as Brey has been badly burnt by him before, and isn’t keen to repeat the experience.

This was an easy read, with plenty of steamy moments. Brey isn’t a walkover though, and Liam has to work to regain her affections. I enjoyed the writing style and found it flowed smoothly. I’m always a sucker for an epilogue and thought this one was brilliant.

For a steamy paranormal romance with a hint of suspense, then I can heartily recommend this one.

Bulb is an intriguing book- often surrealistic, often off-putting, always interesting. The concept of no privacy and people being able to look back on their own life (or yours) is scary– but altogether believable, which is even scarier. It did take me a bit to get into it (the first few chapters were confusing) but once I got further into the book, I really enjoyed it.

There are very interesting premises here, and the descriptions of the future are intriguing. The author has a gift for language I quite appreciate. There was some disjointedness in the actions, which lends itself to the surrealistic qualities. Definitely a book I want to go back and revisit.

I’m intrigued by the Faux Life Movement, where people rebel against the society as it is and have the ability to stay “off grid” in a way by finding a way to conceal their real identity and take on fake identities. It reminds me a bit of the book people in Farenheit 451 who have their own way of rebelling against the banning of books.

This is not a book one can skim through, but I think it is definitely worth the time to read it. If you aren’t put off by a book that goes off in tangents and isn’t strictly linear, give this book a try. Beware, it’s not a book to read and watch television at the same time… it’s a book that demands your full attention…but it’s so worth it in the end. Thanks, Mr. Wind. The Soviet political prisoner who was the protagonist of this story was a fascinating person. She was only ever known as KH-112 in the prison camp, and that is how I will refer to her in my review. KH-112 had quietly suffered for years by the time the audience met her, so it came as a surprise to see how she responded to the hard labor, freezing climate, and chronic lack of food that had already killed so many before her. While she’d certainly been harmed by these experiences, I loved seeing the glimmers of resiliency in her beginning with the opening scene. They were beautiful harbingers of what was to come and made me determined to get to know this character better.

There was a plot hole involving how KH-112 was treated by her captors. In the opening scene, the narrator took great care to show all of the precautions that had been taken to keep her from killing any more of the soldiers who were running the prison camp. She was such an intelligent and resourceful person that the smallest slip-up by her enemies could give her the opportunity to fight back against them. It came as a surprise for me, then, to see how she was treated after the Soviet Union found another use for her. Her talents were obviously quite valuable to her captors, but that didn’t quite explain the shift in how they treated her given what they knew about her past.

The ending couldn’t have been written better. I’d grown attached to KH-112 and was incredibly curious to see what her government expected her to do and if her abilities would actually be of use to them. My questions were not only answered in full, they also sparked many more questions about what happened to her after the final scene. I loved finding out what her fate was and thought the author did a wonderful job of tying everything together neatly while still leaving room for the audience to imagine certain things for ourselves.

Dislocation Space was a thrilling tale that should be read by anyone who has ever felt trapped by their current circumstances.

I loved this book from the start, and as mentioned, found it to be very unique and enjoyable. As it plays over several years, it’s different from many other stories that might have similar summaries. In fact, with the MC’s tale of revenge, and the way the story’s laid out, the only thing I can compare it to is Well of Darkness (Sovereign Stone #1) by Margaret Weis. The biggest difference is that that was a series, and this a stand alone, so there’s nothing else to look forward to after this rather… dark and questionable ending.

Still, as mentioned, I did enjoy the first half immensely, and if you don’t mind a dark revenge story, this is an interesting story, and one that perhaps wasn’t my favorite, but still one that I felt the writing and plot were well done, and that could easily be enjoyed by others.

There are hints of BDSM in here (they are based under a BDSM club, after all) but the reasons for this all become clear. About Jake – I understand why he did what he did, but I don’t like it. As for Zoe, she is doing what she thinks needs to be done. As for whether it will work or not, well, that remains to be seen.

The writing is smooth, with plenty of steam thrown in too. There are plenty of characters here to like or loathe, and some you won’t even know which way to feel.

As you may have guessed, this book ends on a cliffhanger and will definitely leave you wanting more. This was a new-to-me author and one I will absolutely be keeping an eye out for. Plus, I need to continue with this series!! Cliffhanger, remember?!

Dasher is an adventurous young reindeer with a wish in her heart. This story handled the sad parts of its plot beautifully. In the opening scene, Dasher and family were owned by a man who did not always treat them kindly. The details of their lives were kept to an age-appropriate level while still allowing older readers to pick up on subtle clues about why that traveling circus was not a nice place for a reindeer to live.

I was thrilled to have a female protagonist in a Christmas story! Most people assume that all of Santa’s reindeer were male, so it was refreshing to have a female reindeer running the show. Dasher was a wonderful role model no matter what was happening around her. I also appreciated the fact that her gender wasn’t made a point of conflict in the plot. She simply existed and went about doing all sorts of heroic things without giving a second thought to the reader’s assumptions about the creatures who pull Santa’s sled.

Speaking of Santa, I adored the scene that showed how he and Dasher first met. Not only was it wholesome, it added so much joy to a storyline that hadn’t included a great of joy up until that point. Seeing how his mere presence made Dasher’s life better brought a smile to my face. I already loved Dasher by that scene, but all of the characters became unforgettable after it.

Dasher: How a Brave Little Doe Changed Christmas Forever was a heartwarming tale that I can’t recommend highly enough.
