I’ve finished this book and I still don’t know the answer. What I do know is how incredibly well-written it is, being full of Welsh mythology, legends, lore, and magic.

There is a haunting quality to this story, from beginning to end, with a touch of mystery. The romance side is full of problems and setbacks, being the ultimate slow-burner. There are a couple of love scenes that go into some detail, but nothing too detailed.

This is a long book with plenty of detailed descriptions. An excellent cast of characters helps to build this story up to it’s perfectly paced climax. Although this is the first book in the series, I feel it is a complete standalone. I would love to continue the series just to see where it takes me next.

I have enjoyed every single scene in this book and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it.

Athena and the other characters in “A Shawl for Janice” left their EcoTower to do a bird count in nearby forests and meadows that had sprung up from the ruins of small towns after the Change. Ms. Almazan did a wonderful job with her world building here. I truly felt like I’d been transported to the future, especially once Athena’s reasons for volunteering for this bird count were revealed. There was so much character development in those plots twists that I wished I could remain with Athena to see what she did with her life next.

While I enjoyed every story in this anthology, there were a few of them that I thought would have benefited from including more details about the worlds they were set in. “Snow Globe” was one example of this. It followed Okwi Bearheart, a park ranger who was struggling to connect with the citizens of Windigo. When a violent conflict threatened the safety of some of people who lived in that community, she had to act fast to try to help them. There was a lot going on in this plot, but the narrator didn’t give me enough details about any of it to draw me into what was happening. It would have been nice to get to know the characters better so I could have been more concerned about their fates.

“Recovering the Lost Art of Cuddling” followed Katie on a last-minute run she did to repair a neighbor’s composter before a dangerous blizzard hit their community. When the storm amped up and her journey didn’t go as anticipated, she had to figure out how to get herself and her sled dogs to safety before they froze to death. I was eager to learn if these characters would be okay. They were so endearing and well written that I couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to any of them. Their adventures were exciting from beginning to end.

I’d especially recommend Glass and Gardens: Solarpunk Winters to anyone who wonders what the future might hold for humanity.

To try to apologize for that she had bought a flower arrangement but her sister was allergic to it.

The plot was fun and different. Nocturne Falls is a well created and unique town. I’ve not read many books where there is a place for all the supernatural and unique beings to live without being censured. The best part is that the normal humans think it’s just an odd town that is obsessed with Halloween. Jordan fits in well as she has a gift to talk to animals telepathically.

The characters are well developed with each one having their own issues to work through but they help each other. Harry is able to allow Jordan to finally slide out of her older sister’s shadow and become her own self. She forces him to embrace who he could become. He draws upon her strength to finally decide that it was time to figure out who he really is.

The mystery really takes off when Jordan talks to Harry’s cat, Kitty. She finds out important information about the abduction. Watching their interactions as they piece clues together to figure out Harry’s past is a delight. I enjoyed how Harry reacts to finding about her gift. Their journey takes them in an unexpected direction, Catspaw Florida.

Watching them piece together small pieces to find the larger ones made the mystery a lot of fun. What I thought could be changed is how fast the mystery was actually solved. There was a lot of buildup but then the culprits were caught and the rest of their lives are pieced together quickly.

I would love to read more books in this universe and plan on rereading this novel. I adore animals and getting to hear what they have to say was fun. Both characters grew into themselves and, through their relationship, the reader learns that after persevering through the struggles of life, the end is more than worth it.

This tale did a wonderful job of using metaphors to explain how and why the world had become such a terrible place after the devil’s mirror was accidentally broken. There were footnotes after the final paragraph to explain some of them. I was glad I paused to read each one as it popped up in the text and would suggest that other readers do the same thing. Those footnotes were beautifully written and really helped me to understand some of the more complex metaphors.

Most of the characters revealed their proper names during the course of the plot. Some were identified by the first letter of their name, and others were described by their occupation or some other label. It was amazing to see how well I got to know them regardless of how they were addressed. The author did a wonderful job of showing who they were as individuals, from their interests to their personality traits.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about this story was the ending. The beginning and middle were filled with scenes that didn’t always seem to be related to each other. There were times when I wondered where the author was going and if my theories about it were correct, so it was a joy to see everything coalesce in the end in about the way I hoped it would.

The Time Invariance of Snow was the best piece of hard science fiction I’ve read this year. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

She had such a creative way of weaving words together every single time she cast a new one.

One of the most delightful things about this story was how all of the witches interacted with each other while they were having their parade. They really seemed to care about each other, and this was shown in all sorts of little ways as the main character kept trying new ways to change the weather. I had such a good time reading their comments as they adjusted to the various animals and items that were falling from the sky. There was a lot of room for humor here, and they took advantage of that fully.

The twist at the end made me giggle. It was the perfect way to wrap up a memorable Witch Day parade, and it left me wanting more while also making me feel like I knew exactly enough about what happened on this particular day. Although I would definitely be interested in reading a sequel to this if the author ever decides to write one!

It’s Raining Bats & Frogs was a heartwarming tale that I’d recommend to Halloween lovers of all ages.

The character development was handled nicely. Otis felt like a real person to me. Both his flaws and his strengths were realistically described. There were times when his choices irritated me just like they would have if he were a friend or relative. I loved the fact that he was given so much leeway in the storyline to make mistakes. That’s an important part of being human, and it endeared me to this character very quickly.

It would have been nice to see more attention paid to the fantasy elements of the plot. Otis achieved amazing results with his patients because of something he had access to that no one else did. While the audience was told a little bit about where this power of his came from, I sure would have appreciated more information about why it existed and how it worked. Giving it as much attention as the main mystery plot wouldn’t be necessary, but explaining a few more things about it would have bumped my rating up by at least another star.

There was some great foreshadowing in this story. I had a good time picking it out in the beginning and seeing if my predictions about how it would come to pass matched what really happened. Luckily, I had plenty of opportunities to do just that. It made me want to read more from this author in the future!

Anyone who thinks hypnosis is interesting should give Night Terror a try.

It followed the Livingston family between the time they bought an artificial tree at a yard sale and Christmas Day. The tree they brought home was expensive, so the fact that they got it at such a bargain price seemed too good to be true. I was fascinated by this find and wanted to know more about where the tree came from and why it was sold for so little money. While there were some answers to be found later on, I had so many unanswered questions by the end of it about what happened to them and why their tree was such a strange object.

Merle and Gladys had enjoyed their brother’s annual Christmas visit for years when “A Promise Kept” began. When a heavy snowstorm started on Christmas Eve, they worried he wouldn’t be able to make it home this time and were relieved to see him once again after he did show up. I liked reading about the cozy holiday these siblings shared and was quite curious to find out what the science fiction, fantasy, or horror twist might be for such a wholesome get-together.

As soon as I read the description of “What Lurks Below” in the blurb, I couldn’t wait to find out more. The only thing more exciting than finding life on Mars would be discovering somewhere astronauts might not expect it to lurk. Ray, the protagonist, was someone who’d never expected to travel to the red planet in the first place. Learning this fact about him early on only made me more curious to see what he’d discover now that he was there.

All of these stories were deliciously short. Some of them were only a page or two long! What impressed me about that is how the author was still able to draw all sorts of fascinating parallels between the various places she invented. Characters encountered similar odd events in certain cases, but the outcomes of them were still wildly different from one plot to the next. “Live from Space” was an excellent example of this. Like “What Lurks Below,” it followed explorations on Mars that gave the researchers working on them results they never could have imagined. While I can’t go into details about what, exactly, was found in this case, I loved comparing it to the other Mars and alien planets that various characters explore.

One of my favorite tales in this collection was “Ground Cover.” It followed a young boy named Stanley whose friend was chopping down an overgrown patch of wild ivy in order to find his lost baseball. When the ivy reacted unexpectedly, Stanley was injured and needed to seek help. All of this happened in the first few paragraphs, so I was thrilled to see what might happen to these characters next. The possibilities seemed endless!

I’d heartily recommend Extraterrestrial Encounters: A Collection of Sci-Fi Stories to anyone who loves this genre and is in the mood for short, satisfying glimpses of unique worlds.  Very cool! Very interesting!

Soon, Edward and the impressive boy realize their deep attraction for each other. This causes immediate controversy in the school, as they are the first two boys from feuding houses to come together—especially in a school where house rivalry can end in murder.

Not all of Edward’s experiences at his new school were positive ones. Some of the best passages were the ones that talked about the bullying he went through and the different techniques he tried to deal with that. I appreciated the fact that this wasn’t something that he solved in the first chapter. It was an ongoing problem that the author took seriously and obviously worked hard to explore in a very realistic fashion.

This book spent a great deal of time telling the audience what was happening instead of showing it to us. Everything from the personalities of the characters to the descriptions of life at the Prymoutekhny Wizards Academy for Boys was affected by this issue. I adored the premise, but I had a lot of trouble getting into the storyline because of how hard it was to imagine what it would be like to experience that world for myself.

The romantic subplot was nicely written. I liked both of the characters who were involved in it, and thought they’d make great boyfriends for each other. It was also nice to see them get to know each other for a while before any hint of flirtation happened. Based on what the narrator told me about their personalities, this seemed like it would be the most logical thing for them to do.

I’d recommend The Killing Spell to anyone who likes the idea of attending a magical boarding school.
