Check your brain at the door, settle down with a lovely spiked drink and enjoy this fun Christmas story. In some respects this reminded me of a very spicy, slightly naughty Harlequin Christmas book. A dedicated SEAL who comes home to look after his orphaned niece and bumps into the girl-next-door who he’s been crushing on. This story is slightly clichéd, but I still really enjoyed it, even if the storyline is a little tried-and-true. I chuckled a fair bit at how Noelle was trying to be secretive and devious – giving Molly the Christmas present she dearly wanted – and while Noelle managed it, she also got to snag the man she’d been crushing on since school.

Understandably, most of the plot revolves around Dante learning to take care of Molly and the start of Dante and Noelle’s relationship. While part of me wished the plot had been a little more fresh – or that the conflict and “twist” near the end had been at least a little believable – this had the definite feel of a comfort read to me. I was also a little disappointed that the editing wasn’t tighter. I found there were quite a few repeated words/echoes throughout the story and this jarred me out of enjoying the story a number of times. Having said that – I really enjoyed both Dante and Noelle’s characters and I liked their friendly, flirty banter. I really enjoyed how they didn’t just jump straight into bed, but talked and got to know each other a bit first.

Readers looking for a fun, “solider becomes an instant dad” type Christmas stories should give this a try. There is some mildly kinky sex – though it’s all kept fairly light – and plenty of chemistry between Noelle and Dante which should keep erotic readers satisfied and entertained. I found this to be an interesting and fast-paced read. The shadowy “agency” training the special operatives puts Anika through her paces and makes for quite the adrenaline rush. I enjoyed watching Anika during her various, rigorous training and start her first mission. The author’s style of writing – along with the characters and situations – really made me think of an episode of the tv series “Alias”. There’s lots of action, a fair bit of cloak-and-dagger suspense/mystery and that whole “let’s save the world” spy/thriller action all through the book. While the plot wasn’t exactly fresh or new, I found the story itself compelling and interesting enough to retain my interest all the way through.

I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters – Anika and Gianni. I found both characters to be complex and interesting people with multiple layers. Curiosity about them both kept me happily turning the pages to discover what would happen next. I also liked how there were so many interesting secondary characters – other recruits both new ones at Anika’s level and Level One and Two’s with more experience and clearly more knowledge about the shadowy government organization that they were training and working for.

While there is a fair amount of chemistry between Anika and Gianni, there is no actual romance in this story (no kisses or any physical affection). I feel it’s important to note though that the story does end with a potential happy ending for these two characters. I’d be very interested to read any further stories set in this world and particularly about any further stories about Anika and Gianni.

Readers who like spy-type novels or action based stories should enjoy this short story as much as I did. I found the plot interesting and I greatly enjoyed the complexities of the characters and the agency they found themselves in. Recommended.

While I enjoyed the relationship-building aspect of the story, I struggled a bit with the unrealistic nature of the sex between Gwen and Lance.

Gwen was a virgin so her immediate and extremely strong sexual reaction to Lance felt a little surprising to me. Her agreeing to expose herself and be sexually intimate with a man she’d literally met minutes ago didn’t strike me as realistic at all. I think a lot of this was due to the fact the author didn’t give me a real reason as to WHY she was so enraptured with him. Why did this inexperienced woman throw all logic and caution aside (having unprotected sex with him) and offer herself to this man who picked her up on the side of the road? At the initial, early stage of their sexual intimacy I didn’t feel any connection between them. There was no reason for her to trust him, no knowledge that he wouldn’t rape or hurt her – she had no idea who or what he was and she didn’t even question him or his reasons.

Having said this, the sex itself was hot and explicit – excellent for an erotic romance, I just missed the emotional connection between them and this really effected my enjoyment of the story. I found Lance to be a protective bad boy with a filthy mouth and a stud in bed. About half way through the story I really started to enjoy how the plot grew more intricate. With a few plot twists and character surprises my enjoyment and appreciation of the author’s story rose considerably. Even though this is the first book I’ve read by this author I could guess a few parts of the plot, but some of the intricacies took me delightfully by surprise and I really enjoyed the extra layers and complexities this gave the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the second half of this book.

Lance and Gwen’s relationship progressed at an extremely fast pace – married within a day of meeting each other – so readers who appreciate a bit of a slower ride and the characters connecting fully before they progress might not be as satisfied with this story. Those who like a rough-and-tumble courtship and are happy to just disconnect their brain could find this a fun and interesting read.

I enjoyed this short story. Gritty and written in a very noir-detective style I was pleased that I could pick it up without reading any other of the Artie stories and not only understand what was going on, but also find myself drawn to the hard-boiled detective Artie. A great, quick read.

Artie and the Brown-Eyed Woman

While in the middle of a job, Artie witnesses a brown-eyed woman being kidnapped off the street. He gives chase, but can’t save her in time. Despite his best intentions, he finds himself drawn to helping rescue her. But is the beautiful, brown-eyed woman all she appears to be?

I really liked this short story – again there was a twist at the end which took me by surprise. The author has a good style of story-telling that I really enjoy, lean and crisp and a little noir-ish. In a very few words characters are made to come alive and the plot is quite gripping despite the short word count.

Artie and the Green-Eyed Woman

While leaving a job, Artie runs into a woman who convinces him to pick the lock on a nearby building. Even though he’s eager to get away – the woman drags him into a new mess, and Artie will need all his luck and wits to get out of this trouble.

I found this to be a great short story, with a very good lesson for Artie. I also enjoyed meeting Artie’s mother for the first time.

Artie and the Big-Footed Woman

While on the bus going home after a heist, Artie has some rotten luck when the zipper on his bag breaks and a big-footed woman nearby sees the jewels from his score. What will the mysterious woman want in exchange for her silence?

I enjoyed this story. I wasn’t at all surprised by the plot twist, but I still greatly enjoyed watching Artie deal with the tricky problem Liz presented. A great read.

Readers who enjoy straight mysteries with a hard-boiled, noir-like feeling should enjoy these short stories. I enjoyed them all and would happily read longer-length stories about Artie’s adventures and crimes. While there is a long-standing relationship between Artie and Josie there is no romance in any of these short stories – they are hard-boiled, old-fashioned, straight mystery/suspense style stories that I feel should appeal to a wide range of readers.

I enjoyed both Mia and Brent’s characters, found them refreshingly direct, and the chemistry between them was scorching hot. I was particularly pleased with the happy ending – I feel the author did a great job wrapping up the short interlude and giving both Mia and Brent satisfactory endings.

Readers looking for a short, steamy and very slightly kinky read should find this story enjoyable.

I found their friendship believable and their chemistry – while not hot – did sizzle and felt realistic to me. Readers looking for an erotic or overly descriptive romance in the bedroom might be disappointed, but I personally found the sex scene tastefully and briefly written. The consummation was satisfying for me and I felt it certainly added to the plotline of the story and wasn’t wasted or superfluous.

I was particularly pleased that the author didn’t throw in conflict just for the sake of having it there. I thought the heart-to-heart discussion Nick and Tina had was perfectly handled – honest and soul-baring without being overly dramatic. I especially was grateful that there was no “miscommunication” or half-hearted conflict inserted to add tension. I really feel the author should be commended for balancing the romance, intimacy and serious discussion.

A fun story about two friends becoming lovers and a short story I really enjoyed.

I found this to be an interesting mystery/suspense story. I enjoyed the Christmas premise – and thoroughly enjoyed a Christmas story where the heroine pretty much hates Christmas – I found it quite refreshingly different. I also enjoyed how there were a few sub-plots mingled in with the main plot of the killer who murdered Sabrina’s family and held her captive a number of years ago.

I thought the cold and isolated lake was an excellent backdrop for the murder-mystery and with a strong set of secondary characters my interest was captured quickly. The sub-plots with such a cast of good characters kept me turning the pages eagerly, deeply invested in what would happen next. I was exceedingly pleased when a number of my guesses about the various plots turned out to be incorrect (nothing I love more than a mystery that keeps me wondering!) but I did manage to predict a few of the more clichéd aspects of the plot. Still, I found overall the mystery was refreshingly different and kept me on my toes, so I really enjoyed that.

There is plenty of – very antagonistic to my mind – chemistry between Josh and Sabrina. Usually it annoys me when the hero and heroine spend most of the story at each other’s throats and then magically decide they actually really like each other toward the end of the story. In some respects this really frustrated me. While there certainly was chemistry both Josh and Sabrina really did seem to strongly dislike each other so that made their eventual romance seem fairly unrealistic to me. Thankfully I found this story so heavily invested in the suspense/mystery aspect of the plot I could just ignore the small romantic sub-plot and I don’t believe this lessened my enjoyment of the story at all. I feel this is a really wonderful mystery/suspense story, I just personally found the romantic aspect of it lacking.

With plenty of interesting and strong secondary character’s and a few really intriguing sub-plots as well as an excellently written main murder plot I found there was a lot to enjoy about this story. I very quickly found myself invested in both the mystery and a number of the characters and would happily read more mysteries by this author. A good, suspenseful read.

Readers looking for a quick, naughty and hot short story should definitely find this one delectable. I enjoyed the dirty talk between Marcus and Emily and the sex was blisteringly hot and certainly explicit. A part of me wished that there had been more time to explore Marcus’ character. This story was told from Emmy’s first-person point of view, so while Marcus’ attraction to Emmy was certainly clear and understandable, I didn’t get as good a feel for his character as hers. With such a short story, it is also of course very difficult to get a solid, good feel for what their relationship really is and how they would interact outside of the bedroom.

Sizzling hot and slightly kinky (calling Marcus “Sir” and a bit of light spanking) I believe this short story should appeal to many erotic romance readers. There is a definite Happy For Now ending and I would certainly read more about these characters in the future should another short story come along.
