I did find this book rather intriguing due to one of the vampires being Spanish and his arch rival in the book is Aztec. This is a part paranormal, part fantasy that proves that really hot heroes come in all shapes and forms.

If you’re a fan of longish short stories or want to squeeze in some reading time between chores or errands this is the ideal book. Amira Press did a great job of pairing contemporary and paranormal stories together. Due to this, both stories are somewhat bland without offering anything new or interesting to the classic themes. However, romance fans and those who especially enjoy the young, innocent man with an experienced (much!) older gentleman may enjoy these offerings even if they are similar to other such stories. The sex scenes are muted so those looking for the scorching sex the author usually delivers be aware these are much more a sweet romance, for all the inherent blood and violence of vampires. This small collection is okay and of most interest to the author’s fans.

One does question how he was so easily duped by Danetta and why he never had any inkling before that he might be attracted to males, but it’s forgivable since he seems to have spent most of his time wrapped up in his work.

Not your typical boy-meets-boy story, the characters will quickly grow on you and the ending is ultimately satisfying. Readers will have to discover all the details for themselves, though, and it’s well worth the read.

While I enjoyed the concept of Illicit Hunger, I had a few issues with elements of the story. Namely the circumstances that led to werewolf blood being deemed “tainted” and the war it caused centuries before. So much of the story is invested in the singular truth that vampires cannot feed from werewolves, and I felt slighted with the rather brief explanation. Adding some tension by upping the ante would have been welcome. Another disappointment was the abrupt ending. I’m aware this was probably done to leave room for a sequel, but even then, it seemed a trifle rushed.

Aside from that, the material is well written, fast paced, and easy to read. The characters are memorable, the interaction between Lia and Jericho is combustive, and there is enough intrigue to keep you turning the pages to see what happens next.

Meant for those that enjoy paranormal with a slathering of steamy sex, if you’re in the market for some vampire/werewolf loving, you’ll enjoy Illicit Hunger.

It’s perfect because of his role and what he’s supposed to do.

Ember is the heroine. She’s at a point in her life where she needs to decide what is important to her. Her journey stuns her with the realization that she’s in dire need but doesn’t quite know how to fix it — or even if she wants to. Her character invoked sympathy and curiosity.

There is an internal conflict for both of them, compounded by external forces that don’t care what their issues are. The confrontation scene had some interesting and exciting elements to it. There were some wonderfully done descriptive passages which I liked. By the time I finished this story one thing became clear to me. This story should have been more of a novella. Ms. Cory has an incredible world with many facets of character, political climate and emotional connection which, due to the nature of a short story, seemed rushed and not fully fleshed out. This story left an incredible amount of questions and possible story threads unanswered. The effect of the moonstone being one fascinating example because I had a feeling that something was there, just out of reach and Ms. Cory was teasing.

Mortal Compass has its focus on what vampire romance readers enjoy best: the coming together of two lovers who thought they’d never have a chance at happiness, and beat the odds. There are bad guys and a surprise, a revelation and a choice. The best part is a satisfying happily ever after supported with dialogue which made me smile. It’s what brought this story together and made it work and that makes this a worthwhile read.
