Why he wants to do this makes no real sense and seems to exist to further this ideal that casual sex amongst male friends is an ideal to strive for. All throughout the series, this has been a weak point for me, as the concept and reasoning has never been fully and completely explained. Thus throwing this in yet again with men who haven’t been at all interested in such before a relationship and only now–once they’ve supposedly found love–want to have casual sex with their friends, just doesn’t make sense.

On the positive side though, the characters from before all make appearances and even Katherine, the token female, adds her comments to the bunch. The sex is hot, frequent and well-written and has a touch of BDSM but nothing too intense or overt, even as Thom is described as a very intense dominator. The light tone to the series is continued here and the concentration on the sex in its various combinations keeps the story moving quick and easy.

The author is a talented writer, but I’m hoping for a bit more romance and committment and a little less bed-hopping in the next installment. The lack of solid romantic connections amidst all the sex has this feeling less and less like real romance among young, hot porn stars and more like a group of friends messing around with each other. Will she become something “more” as they refer to her being the third to complete them? I realize the story is ménage and an erotic short, but as with any paranormal/fantasy with an interesting hook, I spent more time trying to figure out the eccentricities of the reality and future versus enjoying the heat between the sheets.

There were also some minor moments of language awkwardness, and continuity issues that occasionally took me out of the scene.

In all, if you are looking for a gentle initiation into the BDSM world, and exploration of the motivation of the players in that world, I recommend Maison Domine. While it may not have found a permanent home on my keeper shelf, Ms. Kade is a delightful new talent, and I definitely look forward to reading more of her work.

She expressed her confusion and skepticism. And the brothers had quite a bit to figure out for themselves, having never been close to each other before nor, of course, having been mated.

Each brother bringing Lacey into his world outside the bedroom makes for some funny and tender scenes, and in the end, who needs a bed, anyway? The love scenes are trademark Leah Brooke, steaming up the pages. Though I didn’t particularly care for one scene in which the brothers used sex to make a point, neither did Lacey and she definitely let them know it. And even if four gorgeous alpha men taking care of their mate is the stuff of fantasies, Lacey’s responses to her situation are fairly realistic, lending credibility to the story and drawing the reader even further in.

I was, however, somewhat distracted by the relatively high frequency of editing errors, including spelling, punctuation, and the mixing up of names, especially in important back-story scenes. And while perhaps a minor point, and one over which an author rarely has complete control, I was nevertheless disappointed that after many references to the heroine’s hair color in the story, the cover did not match.

I was not blown away by Alphas’ Mate, but I may have set myself up to be disappointed because I love Ms. Brooke’s Desire books, which have a permanent home on my keeper shelf and made her an auto buy for me. So maybe Leah Brooke has set the bar so high even she can’t always live up to Leah Brooke. Though lengthy, this is a fairly simple story told in straightforward language. It was really just your basic entertaining piece of erotica without a lot of depth or subtlety. That said, it was a fun and very steamy read, and if you like hot, dominating alpha werewolves taking their mate to new erotic heights, then Alphas’ Mate is the book for you.
