One of the aspects of this short story I appreciated, since it begins with a bang, is the bits of backstory Ms. Arend throws in along the way. Paige and Trent both give us some flashbacks of that first intense meeting that guaranteed Paige was the adventurous and outgoing woman they craved. I also liked how no one was overly self-assured of their HEA. Doubts are real. Questions are real. Misunderstandings are real. Ms. Arend does a beautiful job of building the relationship outside the bedroom where the readers feels the chemistry that is honest and not just based on sex.

It isn’t necessary to have read book 1 in this series to enjoy Paradise Found but it does provide a nice setup for the other stories, so I recommend beginning with Exotic Indulgence and then find your way to Paradise and beyond. These are quick reads but you won’t feel shorted on story or satisfaction.

The author does a wonderful job of mixing romance and magic. As Javier and Catherine fight to find out where their relationship stands they must also fight the evil that threatens the entire paranormal world. With the help of Talen they must gather their magic and ready themselves for a fight that seems to be on its way. I enjoyed seeing the three interact and watching their alliance turn into something more was a nice read. I hope that I get to return to this world again to see Talen find the love that he deserves.

As I said, emotions and tension runs deep in this book. So does the incredibly HOT sheet action but the author says it best… it’s “Not just sex. Tenderness”. I appreciated how Ms. Wayland painted Patrick as the dominant in the bedroom but she doesn’t let him get away with always being on top. With love and tenderness, Brandon teaches Patrick it’s okay to let someone else be in control…sometimes.

The plot is multilayered and at one point I felt like that Ms. Wayland had thrown in a side story regarding the local mob that was unnecessary to the overall story. I couldn’t have been more wrong. While the mob isn’t the main plot it served a greater purpose of making Patrick more aware of himself and his feelings for Brandon. Ms. Wayland delivers an incredibly heart wrenching story that is so realistic at its core it’s hard to open a paper or turn on the news and not see a story that relates.

There is so much I would like to say about this book but it would give away too much of this story and it really needs to be read to be appreciated. If you love intensity in and out of the bedroom and thick throughout the book, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Destiny Calls. This was the first book by Ms. Wayland that I’ve read but it certainly won’t be the last.

Percy and Raina have an ‘old married couple’ kind of relationship and Percy’s moment of triumph in the story is awesome.

There’s the external threat of assassins going after the assassins, the idea of vengeance, and the most important and relevant issue is the balancing of three lives into a cohesive and healthy relationship. Feelings are hurt, soothed, explored and exposed. The dynamics of bringing together three such diverse and unlikely characters and making them fall in love was tricky and fascinating. To add spice and suspense there was an additional goal or plot — to rescue a relative from an unspeakable and well guarded place. Put it all together and readers are in for a roller coaster of drama, uncertainty, daring-do and a romance that defies the odds.

Kat is an exiled princess. The best description I can come up with to refer to her is ‘survivor’. There’s a bow to the tale of Cinderella regarding the heroine. The unfair attacks against her haven’t broken her but made her stronger, more determined and more appreciative of the gifts that come her way. I loved that she could be haughty and prim, wild and devious, and sexually bold — truly a mate worthy of the strong men in her life.

Those manly men come in the yummy packages of Hattori and Ciran. A reader will first meet them in an innocent setting. The thing that made me tap my chin in thought was the family member. The blurb doesn’t say anything about it and neither will I. I will only say that I wished the character was fleshed out more. I understand that trauma will affect a person but it was hard for me to really truly care when the person came across as cardboard and stiff. Something was missing but I can’t put my finger on it. Out of the whole book, this is the only thing that I felt let me down.

The Assassin’s Lover is a complicated love story, rich in emotion, conflict and heart. Ms. Holly is known for her well written scenes when it comes to skin on skin action and this book certainly delivers with explosive results. The intricacy of the plot takes its toll on the main characters and a reader will be hard pressed to put this book down until the very end. I am satisfied with the happily ever after but I get the feeling it has an attached ‘for now’ somewhere. I don’t believe they’re completely out of danger and I also think the person they rescued now needs some emotional TLC as well. What this means is that the next story set in this alternate Victorian world is going to be an auto-buy for me. I simply have to know.

I enjoyed the setting of this story. The author did a wonderful job describing it and giving us a sense of place and what Teagan does for a living. He comes across as very likable but then in walks Kyrie Hart who wants to buy the property adjacent to his ranch. When he refuses, your sympathy switches over to her especially when you learn she wants it so she can build a spa/sanctuary for battered women. You get a sense that these two are very attracted to one another but that this is the very thing that will keep them apart. And neither seem to budge on what they want.

Kyrie just so happens to walk into a store owned by Abby and gets invited to stay at the ranch. I thought this a little contrived but from this point on the story flows so nicely that you begin to overlook it.

I thought the dialogue between Kyrie and Teagan was very realistic sounding. You can feel the tension building between them as the story progresses. The author did a top notch job making us wait until half way through the story for them to finally make love…although there is a hot ménage scene with Teagan, Talon and Abby prior to this.

Secondary characters like Talon and Abby are well developed but don’t appear too much to actually takeover the story. It’s fast paced and there are some nice twists to Kyrie’s story. One is that she’s a battered woman herself, the second I won’t give away.

The ending surprised me as it contained one of the hottest scenes of the story. If you’re looking for a little of everything, nice romance, ménage, unique setting, this is one you probably will enjoy.
