Driven to distraction by the redhead across the room, Anthony Benson barely hears the terms of his brother’s challenge before agreeing to them.

No matter. It will be easy. Viscount Maddox has never had any problem impressing the ladies. And four weeks is more than enough time to win over this so obviously neglected wallflower.

But things are never as easy as they seem.

The lady has lofty aspirations. And not one of them includes love or marriage. Especially not with an arrogant and self-assured playboy like the viscount. No matter how attractive he may be.

A strawberry intervenes when Anthony tries to win Bridget’s affections. Anthony has a wager with his brother that he will win the heart of Bridget by the end of four weeks. When he tries to begin this quest, a wayward strawberry jumps beneath his foot and he lands in an unconscious heap at her feet.

Anthony obviously thinks the lady will be an easy conquest and Bridget intends to put him in his place when he asks her to dance. Instead he falls to the ground before her, enabling her slip away into the crowd.

Even a rake can fall in love. Anthony’s pursuit of Bridget turns into a more serious attraction as he gets to know her. Bridget desperately tries to keep him at a distance, but eventually they come to a mutual understanding to the benefit of both of them.

This Regency novel is a delightful, bubbly, frothy book. It has humor and tells the story from both Anthony and Bridget’s point of view, which gives a delightful insight of their personalities. Their initial love/hate relationship changes when they join forces and face the designs of others with a united front until a misunderstanding tears them apart.

The people, their feelings and their humor and anger are all real. I could see the annoyance on Bridget’s face and the desperation of Anthony. The minor characters are also extremely humorous. Anthony’s friends delight in teasing him while Bridget’s aunt thinks all men are attracted to her, not her niece.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I like Regency novels but they often become very much a variation on the same theme. This one is different. It takes a situation which in our era could result in various unsavory responses and instead sets it in the more genteel era of Regency.

Applause to the authors for a well written novel.

Jake, a twice divorced father, has given up on finding love until his good friend, Amory, finds herself suddenly single. The complicated romance between them is hot and lusty while they remain discreet when their combined group of four children are around. Amory has never been on her own and wants to prove to herself that she doesn’t need a man to survive. Jake needs her and a good mother for his girls, but trying to convince her to give in and stay with him isn’t going to be easy, especially with his jaded past.

“There was something dangerous and desperate in his eyes, the eyes of a man who looked like he was at the end of his rope with nowhere left to go but down. She knew that feeling; she lived with it every day.”

Jake and Amory met through innocent circumstance, but this did not stop the desire and attraction that the two secretly held for the other. Jake has his rugged good looks, wears soiled work clothes and is a twice divorced, broke single father with two girls, renting a home and has credit card debt a mile long. Amory is a mother of two boys and is in a marriage where she has all the material things, but her husband is a pompous self-absorbed jerk. For the past year she has been sitting with Jake’s two girls until he gets home from work. Amory admires Jake, a simple man who loves his children and works his butt off trying to give them a decent life. This admiration is from a distance until Amory’s husband decides to walk out on their marriage.

I really enjoyed this book. The author has two people that are going though the motions of everyday living, and each knowing they are missing out on something greater. Day in and day out they deny themselves, and resist what’s right there in their face. Even after Amory knew her marriage was over she had an internal battle to take time to care for herself, to do the things she has wanted to do or follow her heart. This to me was so realistic, because this was a real life occurrence. If everything wrapped up so perfect it would have been a fantasy. For this reason I found myself rooting for Amory and Jake because they knew their faults and were willing to face them. Jake knew he had a crappy track record with women. He knew he wasn’t financially stable to keep Amory in the status she was accustom to. And he also realized his maturity in not only selecting a woman for her physical attributes but her qualities. I admired Jake and his journey into being a man and trying to handle things as a man. I think this was a very positive input by the author.

Another plus about the book was that Amory’s boss, Claire gave her a Dr. Phil moment. This really seemed like something that would happen in real life, where as we have friends and/or family to give us uplifting and encouraging words during emotional torn times in our life. Jake’s oldest daughter was wise and unselfish for a teenager. She saw that Amory and her dad needed each other and she was for them being together.

I enjoyed the author’s writing style. She wasn’t too wordy or overly descriptive. She has a believable story that made me want to continue reading to see the out come for the characters. I connected with the characters, felt their hurts and also found myself wanting a positive ending because they deserved to be happy. I would like to have known how long Amory was married and also Amory’s and Jake’s age. This in no way took away from the storyline, but would have been a nice character accompaniment.

One line I remember from the story is “…things weren’t ideal, they already cared for each other. And that was what mattered most.” This statement made the title Extra Baggage really fitting. They each had past relationships, hurt, disappointments, etc. but they each had courage and were willing to try again.

This remarkable novella by Anastasia Rabiyah is a powerful testament that not all books have to be fantasy to give a fulfilling read. I definitely will add her previous books to my list to read.

A trio of Regency love stories for Sweethearts’ Day!

BALD LIES

Audrina is desperate to ensure that Lord Blanford not only notices her beautiful cousin but marries her as well. However, Max’s head is beset by larger worries than matrimony–though he is curiously diverted by the antics of the flame-haired matchmaking minx. . . .

THE LAST VALENTINE

Exiled into obscurity by her odious father, Martine can only assume the romantic love notes on her doorstep are a mistake–intended for another. Who could it be? Only Cupid knows–as mischief and merriment mark the countdown to Valentine’s Day. . . .

LOVE AND TENDERNESS

Few blushing brides have their wedding night ruined by a ghost only they can see, but Senta’s hysterics send her groom running. Reconciling these stubborn newlyweds is no easy task–even for a handsome, oddly dressed apparition who calls himself the King . . . .

Sexual function needs the mind and body of the office chair, distance from the table and position of lamps varies according to the nature of erections for a dominant part of men.A great deal of problem, we start with the cultural restrictions of our childhood, we deduced that that masturbation, nocturnal emissions and cialis uk check stock erections may be perverted by misbelieves of different kind (cultural, religious, individual). Valentines is an absolutely delightful collection of short stories!

“Bald Lies”
is the first story in this charming anthology, and definitely my favorite. I fell in love with Audrina (Dree) and Max right away. Dree is a sweet woman trying to save her cousin, Carrie, from a loveless, arranged marriage. Dree is outspoken, and I had to shake my head at her obvious attempts to push Carrie on Max. While Dree had Carrie’s best interest at heart, it is very clear that Carrie preferred another young gentleman, and that Max has absolutely no interest in Carrie. However, Max did find himself increasingly preoccupied with Dree.

I loved watching Max and Dree get to know each other. Even though the story is very short, Ms. Metzger paces the budding relationship between Max and Dree perfectly. Their connection feels absolutely genuine, and I found myself smiling whenever they were together. One of the things I found most interesting about Max and Dree, is that they are both extremely self-conscious about certain aspects of their appearance. Their insecurities make them more realistic and certainly helped bring them to life in my mind. Both Max and Dree make very silly attempts at concealing what they view as their imperfections. Little did they know their actions put them on a collision course with a happy ending that had me laughing out loud.

Martine’s situation is dire in “The Last Valentine” . She’s been banished from her family home for a youthful indiscretion, yet it is apparent that Martine is a warm and caring young woman. She had my sympathy immediately. When love notes start appearing at her door, Martine is touched and for the first time in a long time, she begins to have some hope of happiness in her future. I enjoyed reading the love notes with Martine and watching her gradually come back to life.

Martine soon believes she has figured out the identity of her admirer. She seems so certain, that I completely followed her line of thinking and had little reason to doubt her conclusion. I began to think that the story was sweet, but predictable. However, Ms. Metzger threw in a hilarious twist at the very last moment that had my mouth dropping open in surprise. While I never could have pictured Martine’s happy ending, I believe that it is a much more fitting conclusion than the one I initially envisioned.

“Love and Tenderness” is definitely the oddest story in this collection. The ghost who ruins Senta’s wedding night has no memory of his past life, but remembers that he is a king. Like Senta, I assume that he is the spirit of some long dead royal. We were both completely wrong. Since he can’t remember his name, Senta calls him Sir Parcival. While Sir Parcival is entertaining and provides a small measure of help to Senta at pivotal moments in the story, I must admit that I found Sir Parcival’s appearances somewhat disruptive. I won’t spoil the story by revealing Sir Parcival’s true identity, but I will say that he definitely doesn’t belong in Senta’s world. Since Sir Parcival is so obviously out of place, I had a hard time settling in to Senta’s story.

Senta and her husband, Lee, are both very likable characters. However, they both strike me as rash individuals who need to learn to alternately listen and speak up at the appropriate times. The problems keeping them apart are generally not complicated and are of their own making. I found myself increasingly frustrated with them. If only they had taken a minute to listen to each other, they could have starting working as a team much sooner in the story. Despite this issue, I did enjoy reading about Senta, Lee, and Sir Parcival and his antics.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Valentines. Ms. Metzger certainly has a knack for crafting amusing stories with unexpected endings. I recommend Valentines to anyone who likes their historical romance with a generous dose of humor.

Will the devilish Captain Stephen Ransom ruin Christmas, or will he prove to be Miss Webster’s most cherished gift?

The Devil and Miss Webster

Eleanor Webster is never afraid. Not until the Devil invades her home and threatens to turn her world upside down. But what scares her the most? Losing her carefully guarded position and family? Or her heart?

As a captain, Stephen Ransom has always done his duty to the best of his ability, serving king and country. But what is he supposed to do with this harridan who wields such power in his late brother’s household? Terminating her position would be the wise thing to do. Wisdom, however, can be highly over-rated.

It opens with a shared – and shocking – secret. The plot promised to be interesting right from the start. Then, in very short order, we start to get a grasp of exactly the kind of person our heroine, Eleanor, is. She is magnificent and atypical for the times: making her own choices, selecting her own role, that kind of thing. She also won’t be bullied and is one to seize the bull by the horns.  I liked her more and more as I read, and the plot was thankfully equal to this excellent character.

Eleanor is best friend to the Viscountess Ransom (Laura) who, one might kindly say, has made a mistake. Eleanor is not going to let her pay forever for that mistake – but, there are indeed some other, very motivated characters in this tale. If you begin reading this, you will not stop until you finish.

Captain Ransom, Laura’s brother-in-law, is set at odds with Laura’s (and so also Eleanor’s) decision almost immediately. It only takes the Captain’s mere appearance for reader expectations to begin to ratchet up. There is a romance coming – but where, and who, are the vital questions. And even before any possibility of romance, we wonder at what will happen when this Captain Stephen actually arrives.

Both in terms of the problem, as well as the romance, ‘the Devil and Miss Webster’ remains continually intriguing. The setting is also delightful – the English country house, and much of it during Christmas. The atmosphere, children’s excitement , attitudes and related conversations, all are very perfect.

My one complaint is that some physical descriptions are artlessly dropped in. This does create moments that feel heavily contrived–people more so than locations.

Fans of the regency will certainly enjoy The Devil and Miss Webster.

Ty fights his attraction for Parris and she does the same, trying to concentrate on learning her craft from the bottom up. Every time they take a step forward, a hidden force knocks them back until they realize someone close to them is sabotaging everything they do.

Both Parris and Ty are strong characters and the plot has hidden depths which unfold like flower petals as the story progresses. Magical creatures abound throughout the tale – fairies, witches and many more beings who Parris believed were mere stories for children. Now she’s finding out they really do exist.

This is the second book of the Council Series but it stands alone well, although I am tempted to get the first book to see what happened there. I felt the strain Parris undergoes as she struggles to learn magic, knowing that failure could destroy her family. Frustration, heated emotion, humor – all these were presented to me in a way that made the story flow perfectly. I would be happy to read the rest of this series as it develops and look forward to the next book being released. In the meantime I’m off to find book one of the Council Series.

Colin Lyre, recently inherited 10th Duke of Lincoln, has been told his whole life that he is superfluous to his family.

When he must deal with the responsibility and stress that comes with his new title, he flounders rather badly. He is determined do his ‘duty’’ and marry an ‘appropriate Duchess.’

Life throws Colin’s plans wayward when he rescues the beautiful Annabelle from a ball. She makes him realize how much better his life could be, but he doesn’t know if he truly deserves such happiness.

Annabelle wants nothing to do with the responsibility of marrying a title. She simply wants to make a suitable match with a gentleman who can support her family.

Colin is Annabelle’s perfect prince until she realizes what life as his life would be like. However, making the rational decision to stay away from one another is much harder than either of them expects.

Colin Lyre, always told he was “superfluous”, begins to slowly overcome his feelings of inadequacy when Annabelle Collins makes him feel like the “most important person in the world”. It is a painful process that costs him dearly emotionally.

He is overwhelmed with his responsibilities and duties as the new Tenth Duke of Lincoln. He seems rather spineless and inept as he lets this mother and his dead brother’s wife manipulate him.

He had fit perfectly into the role of the second son of a duke—the spare. However, coping with his new role is too much and he lets it preclude protecting his wife from the vicious machinations of his mother and sister-in-law. He even seems to side with them against his heartbroken wife who is “his angel”. When she distances herself from him, he turns to drink and gambling.

Colin is a flawed hero that needs more to redeem him than most. He kept me turning pages hoping he’d get a grip and use the power he has as a duke.

Annabelle, a nineteen-year-old beauty, is without money or position. She has one Season to find a wealthy husband—no title needed. She hope for a gentle man under forty that will be wealthy enough and willing enough to help her siblings get established in life. She falls hard for Colin but knows she is not duchess material. She is a genuine, straightforward, warm, happy, talented beauty without guile—not traits that endear her to the Ton.

The Reluctant Duke entertains well. Another thorough edit would have made it even better. A few things here and there take the reader out of the story. The interesting secondary characters pretty much carry the action of the novel other than the love scenes. The hero all but retreats from the field of action; while the heroine hides and bides her time. However, each of them gains insight and courage from some of the secondary characters like the indomitable Victoria and the other three ‘spares’.

The love scenes, well-drawn and explicit, give the reader a picture of how dear and necessary Colin and Annabelle are to each other. I felt like I was just being told about many of the other scenes and actions, but through it all there is no doubt about the soul-mate connection the hero and heroine have. I did so want a scene where Colin puts his mother in her rightful place to smooth the way for Annabelle. I did get the feeling that Annabelle gained strength and a sense of her own worth and power. She will probably smooth her own way to being a notable duchess.

Evie can’t deny she’s falling for Vin, but accepting their future means facing her past…a past that could destroy everyone she loves.

The story started off right away with Vincent and Evelyn dancing around each other, I admit I love friends to lovers’ books. Especially when there is the extra complication of heroine being the sister of the hero’s best friend, those stories always seem like they were fated to be together.

Evelyn “Evie” Banks has a lot of baggage and a fear of intimacy that is well earned. I wept for her from the very beginning, and while I wept, I cheered her on to not let her past win, to go ahead and love Vincent that he was worth it. She was beautiful, sexy, curvy and so smart all things that I love to see in heroines, her past just made her seem more human, more real, someone I could relate to on a visceral level. It’s not often I meet a character that I relate so well to and connect to instantly, but Evie was just that type of character.

Vincent “Vin” Hawk is handsome, sexy, rich and so patient. He was the perfect hero and friend for Evie. Ms. Bennett does a great job of not making him too perfect, he is a man and he reacts like I imagine any man would react to Evie and her past. He’s patient and strong but even he has his breaking point. I loved him because, while he is the rich hero saving the day, he wasn’t one of those spoiled rich heroes who expect everything to be handed to him. He works hard to get what he wants and he wants Evie by his side forever, and I found myself sighing with pleasure over every move he makes while courting her. He’s the very sort of hero I love to fall in love with, and why I read romance.

This book does have a past history of abuse so I could see it being a trigger for someone who has suffered in their past, with that warning, I believe Evie and her past and every emotion she experiences because of it was written so beautifully that I walked the experience with her, I felt it all. That’s not a bad thing, occasionally difficult issues need to be addressed, and it gave this story just enough realism to engage me but still let me escape into this world. I highly recommend this book; it was sexy, sweet, emotional and kept me reading late into the night.

Quick and to the point with spicy storylines, these books are perfect for busy women with not as much time as they want to read the sexy stories they crave. This book is a good addition to the line, but I had a few issues with some of the echoing throughout the story. The same word was used repeatedly within close proximity and it was a little distracting. The characters were not ones I would normally warm up to just by the way the story was written. There was a distance between the reader and the players in the book that I don’t usually find with Giselle Reynard.

There is a particular scene that could be a trigger for victims of sexual violence. Anderson basically tries to rape Sarah anally. She is expecting consensual vanilla sex and is really unprepared when he violently goes for the wrong orifice. It was a little disconcerting. Was I supposed to vote for him as the hero or not? Not after that. When the werewolf saves Sarah and carts her away, I felt better. Maybe this was our hero. Then he is accused of murdering her father. Hmm.

As I read further, the animalistic side of Sarah begins to emerge more and more and her carnal desires bubble to the surface. She tries to stop both men from killing each other and as the hunger for blood turns to lust for the flesh, she ends up in a ménage that was very steamy and ice water inducing.

Any time I read a book by Giselle Renarde, I look for the extreme detail she layers on with culture, speech and setting. This book had a timeless quality that felt like the present, but really could have been any time within the last seventy years. It had a flow, once you got past the echoes and the disconcerting feeling about not being sure who the hero was. The sinfully delicious werewolves delved deep into the fantasy of ménage and were very inspiring.

If you enjoy a short tale about a woman who just can’t give up one man for another and loves a bit of howling love in the moonlight, then this book is for you.

When Harper’s brother, Andrew, has to cut short his latest travel show due to extreme weather, he heads home for some relaxation. When his buddy tries to set him up with a blind date, Andrew doesn’t really say no. When Amy wakes up in the middle of the night, tied to the bed, with a handsome and sexy man doing delicious things to her, she thinks this is the surprise from Harper, because one night, in a tipsy conversation, Amy confessed that her secret desire was to be tied down and dominated by a stranger. Andrew thinks this is the Amy that his buddy wanted to set him up with. When they realize the truth, they also realize they really enjoy each other’s company, and decide to spend time together, with Andrew showing Amy the sights of Chicago. Andrew isn’t looking for forever, and Amy knows he will be gone in a week, and she will be returning to Australia soon, as well. Neither expected their hearts to become involved.

Can Amy have a fling with Andrew, and go back to Australia with just her memories to warm her heart? Will Andrew move on to the next place, the next woman and forget her? Or will these two find a way to fight the distance and make a life together?

Misplaced Lessons is the third in Mari Carr and Lexxie Couper’s hot Foreign Affairs series, and for once we have a female Aussie doing the adventuring, going to America to chase a dream. I really enjoy the collaboration between these two authors, both of who write scorching hot romance on their own. With this series, they boost it up a few levels, bringing laughter and tears in equal measure. The world they have built is a delight, and the characters are charismatic and so much fun to meet.

Amy Wesson is a delight; organized, smart and a bit sassy, willing to go with the flow when things don’t go as planned. I liked that she was open to new experiences, and that she was a bit unpredictable at times, like when she tries to convince Andrew that she is a submissive, when she is definitely far too independent to fall in that category. I liked Amy for her honest approach to life and love, and her ability to accept those things she felt she couldn’t change.

Andrew Shaw is a celebrity, handsome, dominant and overly protective of those he loves. When he realizes his sister has ‘disappeared’ he is determined to find out where she is, and frustrated when Amy will only give him generalities as to Harper’s location. I loved that Andrew could discover things about himself as he spent time with Amy, and was sensitive to her desires to see everything she could in her limited amount of time in Chicago. I enjoyed watching as he got blindsided by the lovely Aussie lady, and discovered what love could be.

There is a side story with Harper and Amy’s two friends back at Farpoint, but nothing is really spelled out here. Of course, since Ms. Couper and Ms. Carr are both masters of erotic romance and Ms. Carr does marvelous romantic comedy as well, this is a real hot treat for a winter’s night. I hope that, at some point, we will see Harper’s story, but until then, I highly recommend the three Foreign Affairs books already out, especially Misplaced Lessons, my favorite so far. But beware, these folks will snare your heart, make you laugh and make you cry before they find the perfect solution to their unique dilemma.
