What would I tell a new author? by Aiden Ainslie

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will award a $25 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

What would I tell a new author?

The first thing I would tell them is, if you are writing because you want to be on the New York Times bestseller list and see your books made into movies so that you can be rich and famous, I suggest you rather buy lottery tickets. The chances of making it big time in writing are pretty slim. But if you have other motivations for writing then “Go for it!”

Of course, I’d love to be a bestselling author, but the writing process in itself can be immensely rewarding. Creating characters in a story is probably the closest a man can get to understanding how a woman feels about giving birth to a child. I nurture my characters for months through the whole writing process to shape them into decent human beings. And I am super protective of them. I want readers to understand my characters, root for them, and like them despite their frailties.

So, aspiring author, be prepared to give up a lot of your headspace to your story. The characters are going to be bouncing around in your head whether you like it or not.

The next thing to address with the new author is the tricky question of marketing. There’s no way around it. It’s time-consuming and takes you away from the creative process. All I can say is, find help if you can afford it, or else embrace it. But don’t let it suck the life out of you. Be selective with your precious time and advertising dollars.

One of the things I learned about marketing the hard way is that you must be really, really clear about what your genre is and who your audience is. It’s one thing to write your memoirs, which will (maybe) be read by your family and five good friends. But if you want to be commercially successful, you should know exactly whom you are writing for and what they expect. That is why people like Colleen Hoover, Louise Penny and Geoffrey Archer are as successful as they are. They stick very tightly to a genre, and readers get exactly what they expect from these authors.

So, think big! Don’t just think about the one book you are going to write. Think about the ten books you are going to write. By book five you’ve got your readers so hooked that they are panting for the next release. And that, my friend, is when you get onto the New York Times bestseller list and Netflix sends a limo for the premiere of the movie based on your latest book.

CLIFFORD

After years of hard work and training, I finally have the chance of fulfilling my lifelong dream of winning the Tour de France. Nothing can be allowed to distract me from this mission, especially not Gabe O’Reilly, the adorable art student from San Francisco.

But he looks so vulnerable – all alone in France.

I would be failing in my patriotic duty to a fellow American if I didn’t take care of him, wouldn’t I? And what possible harm could come from spending twenty-four hours with him on the shores of the Mediterranean? I deserve that little break, don’t I?

GABE

I have never seen a human specimen as perfect as Clifford Du Frey. During our fleeting encounter in Paris, I saw a man who was funny, caring, and tender – so very different from the way the media portray him. He is everything I could ever dream of in a boyfriend.

But in what universe will an international sports superstar pay any serious attention to me?

Do not get involved, my brain yells; you can only get hurt again. But my heart is thrumming to a different tune.

CLIFFORD

In my line of work as a professional cyclist, me-time was rationed like the tiny, individually wrapped squares of chocolate my mother would give me as a reward for good school results. Of course, once I had found her secret stash, I used to help myself and haughtily decline her miserly tokens of approval.

But there was no secret stash of time. I had to live with the given rations to deal with my anxieties. I knew what none of the team even suspected – this was do-or-die, my last attempt at finally pulling off the big win that had eluded me throughout my ten-year professional career. I knew that I would not be able to muster the hunger for another Tour – to withstand the hundreds of hours of training rides in extreme heat and the Alps’ arctic altitude. This was it. But if my cycling career was at an end – then what? It was all I had ever done. My grueling schedule had not allowed me to attend college. At twenty-eight, I stared into the chasm of obscurity, a has-been, yesterday’s hero discarded with yesterday’s trash.

I nursed a coffee and was about to spiral into a pit of self-doubt and anxiety when I noticed a young man at the restaurant entrance. His indecision was palpable. He had a camera on a strap around his neck. Who still used cameras? Didn’t everyone have a smartphone? And he held a copy of the Lonely Planet in one hand. He wore cargo shorts, a UC San Francisco T-shirt, and leather sandals. There was something so open, innocent, and vulnerable about him that it tugged at my jaded heart. He might as well have had “American student – rip me off” tattooed on his forehead. Physically he was gorgeous – average height with sun-tanned skin and the perfect proportions that come from working on a farm or construction site. The soft curls of his dark hair shone in the midday sun and fell in unruly waves over his forehead. I had the fleeting, insane urge to push my fingers through that hair so that I could get a good look at his eyes. A few well-heeled ladies in the bistro were giving him the once-over, but he was utterly oblivious.

The man bit his lower lip as he studied the menu, and it was as though I could read his mind. The hand in his pocket was no doubt assessing how many euros he had and whether he could afford the expensive bistro which the Lonely Planet recommended as a “must-do.” Again, his eyes scanned the packed restaurant, and the waiters were too busy to notice his dilemma.

To this day, I do not know what made me do it. I, who had wanted anonymity, to get away from the oppressive togetherness of a competitive sports team in a foreign country. I, who desperately needed time to straighten out my head. I, who definitely did not need any distractions in my life. I rose from my seat and beckoned for the stranger to join me at the intimate table with its white tablecloth, the vase with lavender, and the table-setting for two.

Alice’s life is falling apart. Her boyfriend cheated on her, she lost her job, and she managed to get herself lost on an ill-fated hiking trip. When she passes out in a small clearing in the woods she never imagined she would wake up in a new world; a world with beautiful people, amazing sights, and a sexy Fae stranger.

He’s forgotten what it is to want something, to need something beyond reason. He had forgotten, but when he meets Alice, the feeling creeps back in. He wants Alice and he can’t have her. And it hurts.

Can people from two different worlds figure out a way to be together, or will they be forced to live apart?

Go for a hike. Get out in nature. You’ll feel better.

Why did people say shit like that? Alice huffed and puffed as she walked along the overgrown trail. She did not feel better. In fact, she felt significantly worse. Now, not only was she unemployed and single, she was hungry, hot, and lost.

She let out an exaggerated sigh and wiped the sweat from her forehead. All of her harrumphing was significantly less satisfying with no one around to care. She suddenly felt sorry for that tree that falls in the forest with no one there to hear.

The sun was low enough in the sky to shine directly in her face and squinting was giving her a headache. The sun set in the west, that much she knew. Unfortunately, she had no idea if west was the direction she wanted to go. She glanced at her phone for the hundredth time, still no signal.

Her stomach grumbled menacingly, another wave of nausea rolling through her. Great, she would be the first hiker to die of low blood sugar. How did a two mile hike turn into this? She had the distinct feeling she was walking in circles, but every damn tree looked the same. How was she supposed to know!

Panic joined hunger in her gut. It was still unclear which would win out.

Susan’s Bigfoot Investigation Protocol at the back of the book!

“Bigfoot’s been messing with our garden gnomes.” Mr. Gomez’s brows drew down in a glower.

I studied the three elderly men, bundled in parkas and fur-lined boots. Bracing one mittened hand on Mr. Gomez’s mudroom wall, I knocked more snow off my boots. “Ah… I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with that.”

Mr. Gomez’s frown deepened, his round face crinkling above his red scarf. His snowy hair stuck up in fierce licks, like an incoming mountain blizzard. “You’re a detective, Susan, aren’t you?”

“No, I’m really just nosy.” Okay. I was being modest. I was a crack amateur detective, and I’d helped our local sheriff solve several murders. But I don’t like to brag.

Though news about my prowess as an investigator had clearly spread through small-town Doyle. After so many successes, it was bound to happen. And we were going to be late for caroling practice if we didn’t move soon.

“Garden gnomes should be no problem for a bright young thing like you,” Mr. Gomez said. “This is serious. What if Bigfoot was the one who broke into that house last month on Sequoia Street? That’s only six blocks away.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. Bigfoot. Of course. In a fit of madness, our small town had decided that decorating for the holidays wasn’t enough. We had to layer something called Bigfoot Days on top of the season. If I saw another Bigfoot Santa hat, I thought I might scream.

It seems like everyone’s talking about Bitcoin these days. Still, a lot of people just don’t get it. Or they assume Bitcoin is just for tech-savvy millennial guys or rich investors like Elon Musk.

As for women, many of us didn’t get a great financial education. Some of us shy away from conversations about money and investing especially if it has to do with the crazy world of cryptocurrencies.

What to do? Start with this brand new short, fun, and easy read,”Smart Bitches Buy Bitcoin: A Simple Guide for Women Who Want to Learn the Truth About Bitcoin and Control Their Financial Future.”

The book is designed to help women understand the current financial situation, why Bitcoin could be the life raft they need, and how to get started investing in it. Don’t leave your economic future to chance just because it seems scary or confusing and this is the perfect book to get you started.

Maybe the only thing that says “cool” more than celebrity endorsements are celebrity investments. Besides Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey, there are some big-name celebrities who have made the leap into crypto, including:

Snoop Dog, Mark Cuban, Kanye West, Hugh Laurie, Floyd Mayweather, Bill Gates, Jamie Foxx, Richard Branson, Ashton Kutcher, and Drew Carey.

Notice anything about this incredible list of leaders, celebrities, and generally smart people? You got it.

They’re all guys.

According to one brokerage study released in early 2021, women make up only 15 percent of Bitcoin traders. This must change, bitches, which is why we wrote this book.

The good news is things are starting to turn. Crypto buying platforms are reporting that investments by women are skyrocketing by double and triple-digit percentages.

And just as we were editing this manuscript, Paris Hilton was asked if she was invested in Bitcoin and she said, “Yes, I’m very, very excited about it, it’s definitely the future.”

Bitcoin as an investment was once thought of as a contrarian idea. It is fast becoming a consensus position.

And if you don’t think being invested Bitcoin is a good idea after reading this section, there’s nothing more we can do to help. As the saying goes, we can explain Bitcoin to you, but we can’t understand it for you.

About the Author:

Branden LaNette doesn’t look like a typical author but she has long ignored what she “should” do, say and look like. On her own at a very young age, Branden eventually found herself with the wrong guy, the wrong job, and a bleak future. The fairytale she was promised as a child never materialized.

Finally, Branden decided that she wanted something different for her life, and realized no one was going to do it for her. Prince charming wasn’t coming to save her—she’d have to save herself.

Step by step, decision by decision, through major trials and tribulations that would stop most people in their tracks, Branden learned how to turn heartbreak into happiness and self-judgement into inner joy.

Today, Branden LaNette is an entrepreneur, coach, speaker, wife, and stay-at-home Mom to six C-section babies (ages 1-16) and way too many f-ing pets. Somehow, however, she manages to juggle all of this effortlessly (a blatant lie) while pushing her way through the kinds of fear and self-doubts that whisper within all of us (totally true) to achieve her goals. Her most recent dream come true is this book, one that is destined to have a major impact on millions of women across the globe (or at least nine people in Michigan.)

Through it all, she has found her happiness, her joy, and more importantly, her voice.

Being the oldest of six kids and the only girl in the mix, it takes a lot to scare me.

My brothers are, each and every one of them, a pain in the ass to their cores and I’d grown up the victim of their arguably stupid shenanigans too many times to count. Cooked linguini placed in my bed to look like worms; a farting cushion placed on my chair at the dinner table; toothpaste spread on my school lunch sandwich instead of peanut butter. More times than I could remember one of them would hide in my closet then jump out at me when I least expected it. Anything and everything dumb and dumber they could think up to annoy me, they’d done. And still did to this day if they thought they could get away with it. Chronological maturity hadn’t made its way to their brains yet and they all still acted liked little boys when it came to infuriating me.

This spine tingling sense of unease rippling through me didn’t feel like one of their usual pranks.

But with my brothers, you never know.

“I swear on all that’s holy, Giacomo,” I called out, naming the brother voted most likely to do something moronic, “if this is some dumbass attempt to scare me, I’m gonna make you suffer.”

Channeling the Muse

Writing can be a fickle thing, and as authors, we understand this all too well. Every artist has experienced waves of creativity, followed by dry spells. It’s easy to maximize opportunities when the creative juices are flowing, like when a writer locks him/herself away for days, weeks, or months until a project is complete, or the creative juices have dried. But it’s those times when a deadline is due, and the waters of creativity have run dry, which is the real test of channeling the muse.

During a creative block, I think it’s essential to stop and do nothing. The art of doing nothing is different than falling into resistance and allowing distraction to take over, like answering emails or browsing social media instead of working on the task at hand. The Italian’s have a concept known as “La dolce far niente,” which means “the sweetness of doing nothing.” Doing nothing creates a space where the systems of the body can reboot to achieve greater productivity afterward.

I know for me, getting into nature and allowing myself to be present in the space and time of that moment is like hitting the reset button to let my mind, body, and spirit open to the creative flow. The art of doing nothing is the art of channeling the muse, where we allow ourselves to be so still that inspiration naturally begins to flood our being. Be creative or do nothing; this is the simplicity of channeling the muse.

This is the story of Abhi, a brave young girl who dares to be different. As she follows the call of her adventurous spirit, she encounters inspiring creatures of the jungle who remind her to face her fears, recognize the beauty of the present moment, and walk the path less travelled.

“Will you be careful with the sheriff too?” Mac asked.

“Why? Dane isn’t dangerous.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he protects everyone else.”

“That’s different,” Mac argued.

“How?”

“He’s after you. Who protects you from him?” he asked, growing indignant.

“Dane’s not after me,” she teased, trying to lighten the atmosphere sparking between them.

“Right, and Bunny’s not after me.”

That restoked Cory’s ire. “It’s a free country. If Bunny’s after you, you’re welcome to her.”

“And you’re welcome to Tyler, is that it?” he growled.

No, that wasn’t it, but he’d brought up Bunny and touched off Cory’s temper all over again. The two of them were arguing like a boyfriend and girlfriend, but the gorgeous man trifling with her was a complete stranger. Almost. So why did he feel like anything but a stranger? She had no answer for that.

Distance. That’s what she needed. Time to think this through before she made another disastrous mistake. One in her life had been enough.

“Sure. Why not?” she answered him, trying to sound nonchalant. “Like I said, it’s a free—”

His lips silenced hers. The moment his mouth touched hers, she was lost in the irresistible scent and taste of him once again. He devoured her mouth as though he wanted to become part of her. No gentle kiss this.

Her hands roamed up his broad chest and caressed his hard, roughened muscles. She felt him shudder. Amazed she held the power to create such a reaction in this strong unyielding man, she fisted her hands into the curls at his nape. The low growl deep in his throat rewarded her efforts, and he crushed her tighter still, his arms banded around her back as though he intended to squeeze all thoughts of Dane from her mind.

She leaned back only enough for much-needed air, and the sensual fog retreated. Coherent thought tried to regain purchase. Enough so, she felt the need to explain her . . . desire.

“I don’t usually . . . I mean, I barely know . . .” She took a deep breath and tried again. “I’m not sure why . . .”

“I know why.” He smiled against her lips. “I feel it too.”

Dropping all pretense of playfulness to the wayside, he took her mouth hungrily, like a starving man pouncing on the chief entrée at Sunday brunch buffet.

Need, hot and hard, spiked through her, and Cory reveled in the tingles buzzing up and down her spine. Tingles she hadn’t experienced in years. Tingles she had feared no other man’s kiss would ever give her. She rejoiced in their reappearance, previously buried with long-repressed emotions, and she wrapped her arms around Mac to center herself, fearful she’d fly off into the atmosphere so charged were all her nerve endings.

Even on that fateful night on this same lakeshore so many years ago, when she’d crossed an invisible line with a different guy, she had never been kissed like this. This was a man’s kiss. A hungry man, a powerful man.

The sweetest revenge . . .

He’s the Swift brother who got left behind, the son abandoned by his father. Now Kyle Swift is a man determined to destroy the whitewater rafting empire built by the half-brothers he never knew, the Swift sons who got the life—and the love—he was denied. Seducing Fisher Jones isn’t part of his revenge, but sharing a bed with the beautiful whitewater instructor is the one bright spot in his otherwise dark plan. That is, if he manages not to fall for the sad-eyed beauty . . .

Fearless when it comes to facing even the most daunting river rapids, Fisher never takes chances with her love life—until the night she gets swept away by a sexy stranger. But when her one-night stand unexpectedly shows up in her whitewater class, Fisher faces her greatest challenge yet: keeping her heart safe from a man determined to put an end to the family business—and the life—she holds dear. . .

Read an Excerpt:

When it was his turn, Kyle was determined to make a good impression. On his fellow students, but mostly on his instructor. He wouldn’t be too cautious or too cocky. He would show that he’d been paying attention, soaking in Fisher’s words of encouragement and instruction.

He gave the commands. “Forward paddle. Stop. Left back.”

His crew did exactly as he instructed. The raft was perfectly positioned. Except the current was faster than he anticipated. They were headed straight toward the rock in the middle of the rapid. He used his paddle to make a correction, but he dug in a little too deep and he managed to spin them three hundred sixty degrees around. They hit the rock dead on, and the front of the boat lifted in the air, almost vertical, and everyone went flying into the river.

Well, not everyone. Kyle felt himself being jerked backward and tossed to the floor of the boat like a fish. He scrambled to a sitting position and found Fisher was maneuvering the raft through the rapid.

“I’m sorry. I guess I screwed up.” Kyle couldn’t remember the last time he’d admitted to a mistake. He’d made plenty, but never admitted them. But for some reason, he knew Fisher already knew he was in over his head, and she’d call bullshit if he tried to deny it.

“Help pull the crew back in,” she commanded as they came alongside the swimmers. “We’ll talk about it when everyone can benefit.”

Leia was the closest and Kyle was able to get her aboard; then she helped pull Brett into the raft while Fisher grabbed Nolan.

“Well, that was interesting.” Nolan shook his head and ran his fingers through his wet hair.

“Kyle has just demonstrated the dump truck move.” Somehow, Fisher kept her cool. Made it almost seem normal. “And the important thing is that he was able to account for all the passengers.”

What a loser. Instead of impressing her, he nearly drowned his fellow students.

About the Author:

Kristina Mathews doesn’t remember a time when she didn’t have a book in her hand. Or in her head. But it wasn’t until she turned forty that she confessed the reason the laundry never made it out of the dryer was because she was busy writing.

While she resigned from teaching with the arrival of her second son, she’s remained an educator in some form. As a volunteer, parent club member or para educator, she finds the most satisfaction working with emergent and developing readers, helping foster confidence and a lifelong love of books. She proudly tells her students that she writes romance novels that they can read when they’re older.

Kristina lives in Northern California with her husband of more than twenty years, two sons and a black lab. A veteran road tripper, amateur renovator and sports fanatic. She hopes to one day travel all 3,073 miles of Highway 50 from Sacramento, CA to Ocean City, MD, replace her carpet with hardwood floors, and throw out the first pitch for the San Francisco Giants.
