One night can loosen the grip of the past. Only love can break it completely.

Sensual Healing, Book 2

Freya Fletcher longs to travel and use her nursing skills abroad. But while her father keeps gambling away her meager savings, she’s anchored to her hospital job and family responsibilities.

When friends ask her to a bar one evening to support a local band, Freya goes along reluctantly. But she’s glad she took the night off when gorgeous Nate Taylor turns out to be the lead guitarist and singer. Too bad there’s no room in her complicated life for anything resembling love.

Now, hounded by the family that used him, haunted by the memory of a boy he couldn’t save, he is a man on the run. Although the promise of peace glows brightly in Freya’s beautiful eyes, his past, weighing heavily on his soul, won’t let him reach for it.

Luckily, the delectable Freya doesn’t want a relationship either. They come together for one night, just casual, no strings. But one night quickly turns into several. Before long they’ve fallen in love, but until they can find a way to break free of their pasts, a happy future will remain only a distant dream.

Freya Fletcher longs for a different life, one where she is free to travel, and use her nursing skills to help others. Too bad family responsibilities keep taking all her money, keeping her tied to the one place she’d love to escape. When her friends convince her to take one evening for fun and relaxation at the local bar, she hesitates at first. But once she is there, she is fascinated by one of the band members they came to hear. Nate Taylor has a unique talent, just not with his music. As a young teen, a car accident left him with the power to heal others, and he is on the run from the family that abused that talent and his trust. He isn’t able to handle relationships any more than Freya is, so it seems like the perfect match; two people who just want some no-strings romance and easy-going sex, no talk of happy ever after. The funny thing is, they forgot to tell their hearts, and as the saying goes, life is what happens when you just aren’t looking for anything special. Can Freya stop enabling her father’s gambling and say no to her family? Can Nate come to terms with his past, and move on, making a place in his life for Freya? Or will the weight of their combined responsibilities drive these two fractured souls apart?

Making Sense is Serenity Woods’ second book in her Sensual Healing series and is set in her familiar Australian world, where things are sometimes unseen, but no less real. I like this world, one where people are open for new and different experiences, and you never know if the person next to you is just your regular person or a psychic who talks to the departed. As always, her characters are multi-faceted and well crafted, and are folks who make you laugh and cry in equal measure.

Freya Fletcher is a strong woman, with responsibilities that keep her from fulfilling her dreams. She has a strong sense of family loyalty, but wants more from life than she has gotten so far. When Nate offers a chance at some ‘no-strings’ sex and fun, she accepts, telling herself that it is all she wants in her life. I liked watching as she fell under his spell, and discovered that there was always room in her life for love. I loved watching as Freya grew and found the strength to, finally, tell her family that enough was enough, and that she was finished enabling them. I loved that Nate supported her decision in that.

Nate Taylor is a sensitive, caring man, handsome and a bit of a wounded hero. His family abused his talent for healing, and pushed him to the breaking point. But rather than strike out at them, he just walked away from it all, using his gift quietly, out of the spotlight, with small things. When he meets Freya, he sees in her a kindred spirit, someone he can relax with, and enjoy a ‘no-strings’ relationship with. I liked Nate, with his gentle manners and his caring nature, and loved watching as love sneaked up on him with Freya. I loved his sense of honesty and fair play; at no time did he lead Freya on, and always was up front with her.

The chemistry between Nate and Freya is hot, almost from the first moment they met. I like that there was no hesitation, and that they both head into this with no expectations other than a good time. I enjoyed catching up with the characters from the first book in the series, and look forward to more from this world that Ms. Woods has crafted. The secondary characters deserve to be applauded for their ability to see that these two would have more than either of them expected, and I totally enjoyed watching these two learn about life and love together. This is for all of those who want their romance on the hot side, with some unexplainable powers thrown in. One warning: keep the fan on high, and lots of ice at hand, because, like most of Serenity Woods’ romances, this one goes to scorching quickly and quite often.

Connor, chieftain of the MacDonalds of Sleat, holds the fate of his people in his hands. Rival clans are plotting to take over his lands, and duty determines whom he will fight, trust . . . even marry. Seeking guidance, Connor turns to Ilysa, a young lass with the gift of foresight, who reveals an approaching danger-and a passion that burns only for him. But the warrior must make a powerful marriage alliance, and Ilysa’s bloodline is far too humble.

With her powers to heal and see evil where others cannot, beautiful Ilysa dresses plainly, speaks softly, and loves her chieftain from afar. Yet when Connor finally stokes the embers of desire that have so long burned within her, Ilysa feels bliss unlike any she’s ever known. Now as he is forced to place duty before happiness, Ilysa senses Connor is in grave peril. Can she find a way to prove she is the woman he needs by his side?

Early sixteenth-century Isle of Skye, Scotland was not a place for the faint of heart, but I slipped in quietly one night for a sojourn with the MacDonald clan’s chieftain and his tried and true cohorts. Under their protection I had a sensory-loaded experience that sent the emotions sky high. The adventures and misadventures of Chieftain Conner and the wee Ilysa who runs his household kept me turning pages until late in the night. The Chieftain is spellbinding.

Ilysa and Conner, on their way to Trotternish to set up his household and hold off the clan’s enemies, stop by to see Tearag, the old seer. She tells Ilysa to remember she has the blood of the Sea Witch of legend and was born at midnight on the full moon so she has “The Sight”. Though not as strong as Tearag’s, it gets stronger where her heart is. Also, Tearag reminds Ilysa that she’s been taught the spell of protection that will gain in strength with the faery dance on Faery Hills that is near Trotternish. Ilysa must save Conner from danger until Beltane when his true bride will choose him.

Elysa, only nineteen and already a widow, runs a household efficiently with caring but with firm control in a ‘velvet glove’. Her mother taught her well. She also taught Ilysa to speak softly, to keep her gaze down, to draw no attention to herself, and had conditioned her pretty daughter to wear a loose sack dress and keep her hair totally covered at all times with a kerchief. With her efforts, the household seems to run with magic—then Conner in a fit of temper sends her away. Oh, My! What a mess!

Conner also listened to Tearag’s ramblings but gave little heed to them. His total focus is on securing the clan’s holdings to make them strong for generations to come. His personal desires are set aside for chieftain DUTY to his clan. One major duty is to marry to form a strong alliance with a clan well-equipped to do battle and is well financed. Love has no place in his plans. Little does he know that love cares for him and works to protect him whether he chose it or not.

Wresting Trotternish from the MacLeods and his half-uncle Black Hugh is Conner’s aim, but with a traitor and a possible assassin in the clan’s midst, danger stalks him on every side and as for finding a suitable bride that is another kettle of fish and a smelly on it is.

The plot and the many little sub-plots that are woven together with consummate skill by Margaret Mallory make The Chieftain a magnificent addition to this series. She weaves in the characters from the previous books in a captivating way that lets reader who have read the previous books catch up on what is going on in their lives, but The Chieftain definitely stands alone as Conner and Ilysa’s story—a fantastic, breathtaking tale with love scenes that sizzle, shimmer and glow with magic.

Some secondary characters that ratchet up the tension and suspense are Sorely, the old warrior who served under Conner’s father and later his brother; Lachlan, the acclaimed warrior that Ilysa sees danger and conflict in; and the ‘sour’ cook at Trotternish to mention a few. Of course, the would-be brides that invade Trotternish Castle create their own special type of tension. Black Hugh and the MacLeod press their claim to Trotternish to the limit with most unusual outcomes.

Margaret Mallory’s masterful storytelling and her exquisite writing style make the reader’s sojourn with Conner and Ilysa a memorable vicarious experience. The Chieftain is a keeper!

They’re headed for disaster in a race against love.

Racecar driver Stone Adams likes fast women and faster cars, but his playboy lifestyle isn’t making his sponsor happy. In an attempt to please the money man, Stone marries a woman in Vegas. But when he shows up at his new bride’s house, he discovers she has a fiance she neglected to mention before their quickie wedding–and a younger sister who finds the whole situation hilarious.

Grace Cromwell has always been the one to bail her big sister out of scrapes and jams. This time she doesn’t want to be the scapegoat. But a photo of Grace and Stone ends up splashed across the front page of the newspaper and she’s mistaken for his wife, so she doesn’t have much choice.

Drunk in charge of a marriage licence may seem kinda strange, especially as the bride is not the heroine of Crash and Burn. That alone drew my curiosity and I wanted to find out how the author managed to dig her hero out of his self-inflicted dilemma, and how could Ms. Libby make me believe that ‘the other woman’ was a deserving heroine.

She did, and in a credible and believe manner, as long as you don’t take the story seriously. But then, this is a Rom Com, and Ms. Libby certainly has all her characters jumping through hoops.

In an effort to ‘clean up his image’ racing driver Stone marries in haste only to repent, and fall in love with his sister-in-law, at leisure. The author managed to turn this apparently self-serving hero into a caring and compassionate man once he comes to his senses. As for Grace, the sister-in-law, she is a mixture of loving and compassionate to the point of becoming spineless and it is Grace’s journey and how Ms. Libby maps out Grace’s transformation that is the thread that binds this story.

Good and vivid writing made up for the few inconsistencies in the plot and timing of events. The building of her characters both good and bad, major and minor, is well portrayed. The emotional twists and turns her characters have to deal with rival a mountain switchback, but remember this is a Rom Com.

If you are looking for a light humorous story, then Crash and Burn is the story for you.

Navy SEAL Blake Landon (a.k.a. “Boy Scout”) knows the rule book inside and out. Checked. Rechecked. But when a mission ends badly, his entire team is ordered on leave. And that’s when Blake sees the tall redhead whose dark eyes suggest that the rules— especially those in bed—are made to be broken.

And where one rule is broken, more are sure to follow….

Sex can be used to express an intense, passionate attraction but sometimes, it’s the only thing offering an escape from an emotional traumatic event. But when it happens between two people that click, that connect on an unexpectedly deeper emotional level they weren’t prepared for, then things get complicated very fast.

Ms. Weber had me meeting the hero after the death of one of his best friends and teammate. That pretty much set up the major part of the hero’s internal conflict and it was effective in getting me to care for him. Add to that the heroine’s emotionally distant and ice-berg impersonation of a father and I was treated to a shallow and dysfunctional family whose surface was all ‘perfect family’ for the public. Not a very sympathetic family life by any means. Cold waters run deep in this book, which means the heroine’s character was someone I could easily root for as well.

The author had Blake and Alexia meet with an explosion of hot passion and no holds barred beach frolicking. It wasn’t supposed to amount to much, on either side. What happens next is the stuff of messy romances between two people who have a lot of issues to wade through. I liked how the author chose the progression of their relationship. Sure, it’s rocky with a lot of tug and pulls, surprises, both pleasant and unpleasant, and an unconventional reconciliation, but Ms. Weber kept my interest hostage throughout with very clever and tight writing.

As if the hero and heroine didn’t have enough on their hands with their own internal angsts, which thankfully did not overshadow the romance, Ms. Weber tossed in a firecracker of an outside conflict. That one event, although very suspenseful and exciting, broke the dam of silence and propelled Blake and Alexia into facing their own fears head-on with surprising and delightful revelations helping them out.

My one area of letdown would be Alexia’s dad. I’m thinking just one or two more paragraphs could have addressed my need of feeling that he truly would end up happy with his daughter’s eventual choices. I realize that the author felt that his character was so ingrained with reserve that he would have a hard time letting go beyond what he did, but that didn’t stop me from wanting more. Heck, I would have been happy if all it was would have been a secret smile, perhaps shared with his wife, as he watched Alexia from a window as she made the final momentous choice. Just that little bit would have been the cherry on my romance sundae.

When all is said and done, the happily ever after is the goal and it’s satisfactorily reached.

A SEAL’s Seduction is an exciting and hard-to-put-down book with action and tumultuous and adventurous sexy explorations that make this novel fun to read. It’s hard to go wrong with a story about a skilled Navy SEAL whose expertise is topnotch both in and out of bed. Try it; I think you’ll like it!

Sir Griffin Barry leapt out of the bedchamber window at age seventeen after a very disappointing wedding night, drank a bit too much at the pub…and woke to find that he’d joined the crew of a pirate ship! Years later, he’s become one of the most feared pirates on the high seas, piloting the Flying Poppy, a ship he named after the wife whom he fondly (if vaguely) remembers.

A swashbuckling pirate has been forced into retirement. He could set up house in town or relax on an estate overlooking the ocean or he could go visit the wife he barely knows. That last option isn’t Sir Griffin Barry’s first choice but with his salty right hand man in tow he decides it’s the most practical. What could be better than a ready made household to simply walk into (or limp into in Griffin’s case, thanks to a well aimed bullet) and become a man of leisure? Self-sufficient Phoebe has more than one surprise in store for her wayward spouse. What ensues is fast paced and gave this reader reason to smile on more than one occasion.

Author Eloisa James earned herself a loyal reader many years ago with her easy writing style, well developed characters, clever dialogue and epic stories. I gobbled up every book I could get my hands on after my first taste. She has a lovely way of introducing future hero and/or heroines within a series so that readers wait with baited breath on each new book. We briefly met Sir Griffin in The Ugly Duchess. His story intrigued me immediately and then when I read the blurb for Seduced by a Pirate I knew I was in for a treat.

Part of the draw to read Griffin and Phoebe’s story, for me, was I wasn’t sure if I would like these characters. I have always fallen in love with Ms. James’ characters but these two felt different. That may sound strange but at first blush Griffin seemed very self-centered if not down right egotistical. He saw no problem with simply walking back into Phoebe’s life after abandoning her in a very abrupt and rude manner on their wedding night fourteen years ago. I had hopes that she would sic the dogs on him at the very least. It doesn’t quite happen that way.

Don’t get me wrong, tempers flare, words are said and the tension is palpable. Once the backstory starts coming out–and let me tell you there were more holes than a Swiss cheese factory–we learn what happened to Griffin on the fateful night of their wedding along with how he ended up on the high seas, much less a pirate captain, his side of the fantastical events began to make sense. Misunderstandings abound in this novella but it’s not all just one sided. One of the funnier ones revolves around how he came to name his ship. Also, I was fascinated to know just when and where Phoebe managed to acquire three children who very plainly refer to her as their mother with no hesitation.

I can’t say much more without giving away the story but as I mentioned this is fast paced little number. The transition from angry words to passion filled nights is quickly accomplished and the story is brought to a satisfying conclusion. For myself, it was a little abrupt but I think I’m simply not used to short stories by Mrs. James. There isn’t a lot of time to become vested in Griffin and Phoebe’s relationship but it was enjoyable none the less. If a quick spicy read is what you’re looking for on a cold night, pick up a copy of Seduced by a Pirate. It’s funny and hot with plenty of heart for any Eloisa James fan.

An avid gamer, Jamie Marten loves to escape into online adventure. But when she falls through an antique mirror into a lavish bedchamber—200 years in the past!—she realizes she may have escaped a little too far.

Micah Axelby, Earl of Dunnington, has just kicked one mistress out of his bed and isn’t looking to fill it with another—least of all this sassy, nearly naked woman who claims to be from the future. Yet something about her is undeniably enticing…

When Jamie Marten falls through a mirror in the present day and lands in a rather chilly 1816 England, her troubles are only just beginning. Between convincing the Earl of Dunnington that she really is from the future, fending off jealous women, and simply trying to keep it together long enough to make it back home, she’s got her work cut out for her. However, the more time she spends in the presence of this mysterious earl, the less she seems to want to return home.

Jamie Marten is my kind of girl. She’s brash, brazen, and quite the geek at heart. She’s also so very, very out of her element in 1816 England. However, her 21st century determination and desire for happiness help to keep her on her feet, moving forward at all costs. I really loved the way that no matter what happened, she found a way to counter it, even when her heart was breaking.

Micah Axelby, Earl of Dunnington, is every woman’s dream man. Well, maybe if you exclude the accusations of murder hanging over his head. But to his credit, he’s handsome, he’s well-off, and he’s a pretty great guy on his own. His complete and utter confusion and enjoyment over Jamie’s predicament is endearing and at times highly amusing. Despite being quite flummoxed by her modern ways, he’s unable to deny his attraction to her, showing that opposites not only attract, but draw together.

The Geek Girl and the Scandalous Earl is an amusing, heart wrenching and sometimes very steamy twist on the standard time-travel romance. Mixing romance, humor, and the perils of being a modern woman in a not-so-very modern time, the author brings a rollercoaster of emotion into this story. My only wish is that we had been shown more aspects of Jamie’s geekdom. If you’re in the mood for a well-rounded story that will appeal to a wide range of readers, this is a great choice.

Virginity.

Bliss Edwards is about to graduate from college and still has hers. Sick of being the only virgin among her friends, she decides the best way to deal with the problem is to lose it as quickly and simply as possible—a one-night stand. But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half a brain would ever believe.

And as if that weren’t embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theater professor.

She’d left him naked in her bed about eight hours earlier. . . .

I really cannot say if a twenty two old virgin is rare or not in the real world, but it seems to me that it is very common in romance novels – especially in New adult ones. I do not see virginity issues as a problem, but in the case of Losing It, the whole story revolves around it without any significance.

In Losing It, the drama is toned down, there are no major ups and downs, but certainly there are attempts at them. I missed the lack of significant drama. Actually, I didn’t appreciate that the conflict was tuned down especially because the cornerstone of the story was an illicit relationship between a teacher and the student. But also I did not like it because the author introduced another good place for development of it – love triangle – and then she resolved it too neatly.

On the other hand, the characters are realistic, and their friendship and relationships were believable. They act like what they are: college students. Cora Carmack captured and presented the fun part of a student’s life really well. Not only that, the author presented well students who are in their final year and have to choose their future career path. All the fears and questions related to this are told through Bliss’ eyes, since the story is written from the heroine’s POV. The relationship between Bliss and Garrett is complex and I believe the story would have been stronger if it had been written from alternating points of view.

Losing it has funny moments. It is a light read without a tortured hero and wounded heroine, but with one completely crazy cat. This is a story for readers who prefer less drama, more fun and no huge emotional roller-coaster twists in their stories.

Oh my! It was very hard to write a review for Night After Night. The major reason is because the story had several elements that did not sit well with me. But in the end I up liking the way the story was told.

So, let me start by saying that author built the plot really well and I enjoyed how story was developing. I had such mixed feelings about all the characters but the heroine in particular. On one hand her naivety, politeness and niceness drove me crazy. But on the other I really enjoyed her strong side. It was great to see that a character who is naïve and nice but not spineless. Finally I enjoyed how she was fighting for what she thought was right. The hero was completely different story. He was supposed to be tall, dark, handsome and mysterious, but for me he was brute (but not towards the heroine) and a cold blooded killer. It works for the story, it simply didn’t work for me personally. The characterization of the secondary characters is done perfectly they were presented as a typical small town people: meddling and nosy.

Night After Night is a romance, but the story, at least in the beginning, is more focused on the heroine and her new life in the small town rather than on her relationship with the hero. Therefore it seemed as if that aspect of the story dragged a little bit. More important for me was that it was difficult to pinpoint the exact moment when the hero and heroine fell in love, but also why and how.

Despite the few downfalls I actually did enjoy this story as a whole and I wanted to find out what kind of happily ever after the heroine and hero would find. It was a satisfying one.

I recommend Night After Night to readers who like western historical, sweet romances, virginal heroine, small town settings and meddling matchmaking secondary characters.

Anders felt a connection to Valerie from the moment he cradled her bruised body in his arms. But before he claims her, he must destroy the vampire who almost stole her from him forever. His job would be easier if Valerie didn’t fight him every step of the way. Still, Anders loves a challenge, and the green-eyed beauty is worth fighting for!

Finally! I’ve been waiting to see what kind of woman that Anders would fall for. I bet he was a challenge for the author because he was such a quiet guy with a huge deep and dark attitude. Not only does he get his well-earned happily ever after but readers get to find out what happened in his young life that made him the man he was at the time of this story. Get ready to have your sympathy strings played by a master. Ms. Sands has presented fans with a very poignant, sad and tragic beginning for a man destined to be a hero. To say that I was satisfied with this book is an understatement. I’m thrilled that Anders not only gets to be a happy guy but the journey getting there was an adventure and a wonderful example of the author’s writing style.

It starts off pretty harsh with the heroine escaping the bad guy. The conflict is set up with a sharp edge because just when she thinks she’s safe, she’s not. And when Valerie figures out that this really sweet and gentle pregnant lady is more than she appears, the heroine’s world gets rocked on its axis. As Valerie gets to know the family and Anders’ role in it, she waffles from being fascinated, like the poor guy she makes drink while she gets to prod, poke and study him, and being fearful because she is not too sure who she should trust. But Valerie keeps her sense of humor, her sense of self and I enjoyed her determined and down-to-earth personality.

One thing that really impressed me was Ms. Sands’ attention to detail. I refer to the dog, Roxy. The author didn’t miss a trick. A reader knows that the heroine loves her dog and every detail, from doggie bags, feeding, walking and generally caring for Roxy’s welfare, was incorporated seamlessly throughout the story. I really liked that. The dog wasn’t a prop but a real part of Valerie’s life and Ms. Sands treated it as such and was consistent. That, was excellent writing.

As for the suspense and drama? Good gravy, you would not believe the hilarious predicament Ms. Sand put Valerie in with Lucas’ wife, Leigh. Remember Lucas? The handsome but scary guy in charge? It’s his very pregnant wife that gets to be involved in the most action-packed, hairy-scary scene in the whole book. What could have or should have been a very dramatic and suspenseful chapter ended up being one of the funniest parts in the whole book, in spite of the truly dire circumstances they found themselves in. I couldn’t be scared, I was laughing too hard. It was awesome!

Immortal Ever After is everything a fan of this series could hope for. Once again, Ms. Sands has delivered a truly fun, entertaining and sexy story that will delight old and new fans alike. This novel stands on its own merits because everything about Anders is new. This is the book that solves the mystery of who the hero is and what makes him tick. Valerie is the woman who re-awakens his lust and in true Immortal fashion, brings joy, peace, a craving for ice cream, and true love to Anders, a man who never thought he deserved it. I had a great time reading this novel and highly recommend it.

Safety and security is something that most people strive for. Sometimes in order to have it one can make his or her life pretty boring on the one hand, and on the other one can end up living someone else’s dreams. That is exactly what was happening to Claire Mulligan when she was persuaded by her fiancé to participate in a reality show. But being reality show contestant was an eye opening experience for her, the one that taught her that sometimes in life it is better to choose adventure and unknown instead of safety and security.

I wanted to read Breaking the Rules from the time when it was published in 2003 in the Heat Wave anthology, because of the high praises by in the reviews. And now that I finally read it I can say that all the reviews were correct. This is a story worth reading.

Breaking the Rules is character driven story. The great characterization is what makes it so funny, interesting and good. Claire is the strongest character, because her transformation from the girl who is always playing safe to the girl who is willing to take chances is driving force of the story. The hero, Mitch Talbott, is regular guy, he is sweet and caring and he knows how and which of Claire’s buttons to push in order for her to make right choices. The dynamic between Claire and Mitch is great and the chemistry is real.

The author also did great characterization of the secondary characters that are put in the context of the reality show. That way she created interesting gallery of secondary characters from attention seeking to back stabber girls and beyond. Archer has done great job choosing not to present Claire’s fiancé as completely heartless cheater and womanizer, but as a complex person who is just not right man for Claire.

Breaking the Rules is very well written story. It is also universal, all time story that can be read in 10 years’ time and it will still be fresh and modern. A good story for any season and any decade.
