Their relationship is quick but not very deep since they have only known each other for a short time. Drew is a mysterious figure that we don’t get to learn much about yet. He is a vampire and asks Gale if he can drink her blood and sometimes sleep at her apartment. For that he will pay her rent. Not a bad deal, really.

There are a few things that bothered me a bit. For one, I think the way that Gale reacted to Drew being a vampire and the deal he offers was a little odd. I would have liked to see more character development and find out more about their past. The ending is rather sudden and is a cliffhanger. That might not appeal to many readers, but might be perfect for others.

The cliffhanger is going to draw readers to pick up the second book, I know I will. A short but good story with vampires that are different from the norm. Hopefully the second book comes out soon so we all can find out what happens next.

This is the second book in the Vale Investigation urban fantasy series, but although my reading might have been a bit richer had I read the first book in the series (an omission I plan to rectify as soon as possible), I had no trouble following the book or the characters. There was some elements of the world building I felt I would understand better had I read the first book (and I would love to hear how Bel become Death’s supernatural detective), but I love these characters! We get to meet some interesting characters from the other side of a portal that apparently opened in book one. One group is really awesome… the other group, not so much.

The story starts off with a bang and doesn’t slow down. I also really enjoyed the supporting cast and could well see this on the big screen. What an exciting thrill-ride that would be!

Although the book kept me on the edge of my seat, there were also some humorous moments – mostly in the dialogue between Bel and.. well, everyone… and the way Eli learns about life in Cold City. I don’t want to say more about that because of the fear of spoilers, but Eli and his sister are among some of my favorite characters.

I have bought book one and am anxiously looking forward to the next book in the series. Kudo, Ms. Comby!

It was nice to have so many details about the origins of this haunting.

It would have been nice to know what Ben, Hanna, and their dad looked like. The ghosts were described with a lot of detail, but the same thing wasn’t true for the living characters. Based on the book cover, I assumed they were Caucasian, but even something as simple as their race wasn’t mentioned in the plot itself. I sure would have liked to know if they were tall or short, wore glasses, were covered in freckles, had curly hair, or had any number of other physical characteristics that could help me picture what they looked like, too.

Hanna and Ben were such brave kids. Some of their paranormal experiences would have frightened people who were decades older than them, so I was impressed by how persistent they were during this case. They did a great job piecing the clues together and continuing to try to figure out what happened no matter how unpredictable their ghostly opponents were. The final scene made it sound like this is part of a series, so I’ll be curious to find out what might happen next to Ben and Hanna when they meet their next ghost.

I’d recommend Junior Paranormal Investigators: The Haunting of Room 909 to anyone who enjoys a good haunting.

We learn more about Sundown and her brother Webb, but this installment is Sundown’s chance to shine. She is a great character and really grows during her time in this story.

Sundown was pulled from a battle in the last book, trying to save her brother, but something went terribly wrong. Sundown woke up…in the past. What happens there is fascinating. She discovers an awesome new talent and more hidden inner strength. She meets with the ruling council but cannot tell them what she knows about the future. Here, she meets younger versions of some of the people she knew in her present (in this afterworld). Readers are treated to the inside scoop of some of those interesting characters. They add a lot to the story, and there are some very touching moments, especially with a new, young character. Different types of relationships are explored in this story, adding depth. There are moments of exquisite happiness and others that are heartbreaking. The good and the bad alike have well-written backstories.

The tension escalates throughout the novel to an explosive end (cliff-hanger). Important people are lost in this book, but underneath this sadness, readers will wonder what actually became of them. Hopefully the next book will answer that important question, as it gives a sense of hope that maybe all is not lost for them.

There are some intriguing turns of fate and paradoxes, and the world-building, like in the previous books, is done by the hand of an artist. The author does a great job revealing things little-by-little while at the same time increasing the suspense of the story. It is clearly written, even with the complications time travel can bring. Symbolism is done well and really paints a picture, adding to the somber mood. Dialogue is realistic. This is a great third part to the series, and I look forward to the conclusion. I recommend this book.

This was such an engrossing mystery. While I was quite interested in the plot itself, I found it tricky at times to keep track of all of the characters in this short story. Not everyone was clearly identified in the beginning, and there were so many different people in general that I even struggled to remember who they were when the narrator had given a brief overview of their role in the story.

The science fiction themes were subtle. At first, I wondered if this tale had been misclassified, but I soon figured out that I’d been wrong about that. This definitely did have science fiction elements, and they brought a nice sense of depth to the setting once I figured out where to look for them. I enjoyed the author’s gentle touch here. It was a nice mixture of two genres that I don’t see woven together as often as I’d like to.

Arctic Adagio should be read by anyone who has wondered what sailing might be like a generation or two from now.

Honestly, while some of what happens here couldn’t have without the more paranormal aspects contained within (out of body experiences, and the ability to communicate telepathically, for example) this book’s subject was strong enough to stand on its own. Occasionally I felt the OBEs were more intrusive than helpful, but I also recognize this book–while standing alone quite well–is also part of a series and the paranormal is what links them together. I also wasn’t a fan of the many, multiple POVs here, especially at the start when many are only a few paragraphs. As the story progresses, they do last longer and that helped them feel less intrusive. Additionally there are so many characters to keep track of here! I felt a bit like taking notes instead of just enjoying the story. Again, eventually you get to know them and it’s easier to keep them straight, thankfully.

All of that said, this author does a pretty amazing job with her book. As I mentioned, it’s incredibly complex and sometimes you don’t know what a particular person or thing really is to the story but then she’ll tie up the ends and it’s a bit mind-blowing. This is not a light, fluffy book. It makes you think (it made me think, constantly, about how sheltered I must be because they thought of this stuff happening is horrifying and difficult to believe).

Lest you think it’s all dark and depressing, it isn’t. There are solid, loving friendships formed and some times that are fun and light-hearted. Really, this is just a solidly written book that tells a strong, important story and involves the reader deeply in the lives of the characters. I’m glad I read it.

Sci-fi romances can be a bit hit or miss for me, but I am delighted to say I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Cora is our main female, and she is the Captain of the USS Christina. With an all-female crew, she is both respected and admired. When they crash land on an alien planet, that’s when the fun really starts.

I loved the skull and crossbones reactions from the crew. And the way Cora was able to be both Captain and friend. Her loyalty to the others was admirable, but the best part, for me, was the conversations between Horok and Cora. These were absolutely hysterical, and I loved all of them. It was nice to see Cora and Horok having ‘fun’ whilst being together, and their differing reactions to situations made me enjoy them even more.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read, that kept my attention and had me laughing out loud. An exceptional start to the series, and I really can’t wait to read more. Absolutely recommended by me.

The main character’s personality was well developed. Despite the fact that we never learned their name or even their gender identity, I felt like I got to know them well from the occasionally exasperated replies they gave to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. They had obviously put a lot of work into this preparing for this special hearing, and their dismay at how little the Chief Justice understood about what this character’s clients were going through was both understandable and a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a highly intelligent lawyer who was struggling to break an extremely complex case down into simpler segments.

There weren’t quite enough details in this story for me to fully put together what happened. I caught the gist of it, but I also found myself feeling frustrated by all of the references in the transcript to things that were never explained. It would have been helpful to understand the timeline of events a bit better so I could understand why this case happened and what the lawyers who appealed it to the Supreme Court were hoping to accomplish.

With that being said, I did understand enough of the one side of this conversation that was recorded to know that our species had gone through a remarkable change in this universe. I can’t go into detail about what sort of change it was without giving away spoilers, but I did appreciate how much thought the author put into figuring out how such a leap forward in our development would alter every single part of human society that anyone can imagine. This section of the plot was well developed, and it left me wanting more in a good way.

I’d recommend Oral Argument to anyone who is interested in creative take on what the future of humanity might be like.

The story is more character driven instead of plot driven. Audra is the typical young woman before her world turns upside down. Yet, she finds out that she has a spine of steel as she recovers quickly after the shock of finding out dragons are real. She also starts to learn the basics of self-defense every day and she finds it harder than she thought. She does these exercises every morning in the woods on their way to find Malik again. This is a great scene that shows her practical side. Her trust in Griffin is absolute, for example she allowed him to provide medical attention with the minor burns she received from Malik with berries she never seen before.

When Griffin and Audra share a kiss, it shows the both of them that they have a great deal of chemistry. He tries to ignore their attraction but he doesn’t have much of a chance.

There a few things that I thought could be changed or expanded upon. I would have loved to learn more about Griffin’s life before Audra met him. As he had a magic sword and shield, I would have loved to know how they were made and how his family acquired them. It would have been nice if we had more background about Malik and Griffin’s relationship. Audra’s past would have been nice to know, too, especially as she learns that she has magic.

I really enjoyed watching Griffin and Audra’s relationship blossom. He allowed her to learn how to fight even though she was the only one that he had ever taken under his wing.  He helped her to grow into herself and also opened his heart. I enjoyed this sweet read with a different plot about dragons and dragon slayers. It’s full of fun characters that are well developed with some humorous parts.

Ever read a story where you just want to hug the main male? Yep, that was me with this one. Tark has been ignored or avoided for most of his life due to his size. I was so pleased when Suki saw past his size to the warm, caring, sexy cyborg in front of her!

This is a fast-paced story that also gives you insight into other worlds, some of which are suffering the same problem with the lack of females. Tark and Suki make a great couple, each wanting to help and defend the other, and others. This was a steamy, quick read that nevertheless ticks all kind of boxes.

Great for a lunch break/coffee break book, and absolutely recommended by me.
