I have to admit, I would’ve loved a few more pages with Delaney and Tracy. I have lots of questions and would’ve appreciated more backstory. This is a short story and there is only so much space. The heat level was right up there. I mean hot. Some readers might think some of the descriptions bordered on raunchy, but it worked for the story. I loved it. The chemistry is hot and I’m glad I read this book.

I’m the type, I just want to read the story. But the footnotes do help.

I’ve read other biographies of Springsteen and this was by far the most complete. I learned new things and felt like I was there when Springsteen wrote his iconic albums. I was engrossed, despite the moments I had to reread because of the footnotes.

I was drawn in right away and couldn’t put this book down. He talks about the highs and lows of Hollywood, addiction and raising children. I liked that he sprinkled in stories about his kids. It made me feel like I got to know him better because I saw how he felt less than cool trying to be a dad in Hollywood. I also liked that he didn’t mince words. Maybe these stories aren’t exactly how these things happened, but he told them in a way that made me think he was telling the truth.

If you want an autobiography that’s got some dish and a lot of heart, then this might be the book for you.

Haunting, beautiful and tragic.

I picked up this book because I’ve loved Sally Field since I saw her in Smokey and the Bandit. She’s been great in many films and my favorite role of hers has to be her portrayal of Mary Todd in Lincoln. Picking up this book and giving it a read made her seem more real. There’s a lot more to Sally Field than the simplistic image gleaned from her roles in family shows and movies.

She puts her heart and soul into this story—and she should. It’s hers. I couldn’t put the book down and being over four-hundred pages…that’s something. Her writing is like talking to a friend and telling stories. She is engaging.

My quibbles though have to do with how she handled things. I can completely understand her separation anxiety with her children. Many moms, me included, didn’t want to leave their kids with someone while they work. I get it. But she alternates between feeling guilty and demanding to have time to work. It’s relatable, even if a tiny bit irritating sometimes. The other quibble concerned how much she packed away. By that I mean, she went through some tough stuff. Things done to her, the way people acted…and she compartmentalized. It was almost like she didn’t want to deal so she left without leaving. Again, it irritated me and might be a trigger for some—she talks about abuse and sexual abuse—but it’s relatable. We’ve all been through some cruddy stuff.

When she talks about dealing with the death of her mother, then playing Mary Todd losing the president…it made me respect her more as a person and actress.

If you want a book that will make you think, laugh, cry and want to hug someone, then this is the book for you.

I have to admit, I hoped the climate of school shootings would end. I really did. Still do. This books takes a look at what can be done if you’re willing to fight back—not against the shooter, but the climate.

I came of age during Columbine. I never thought anything like that would happen in my lifetime and I had to explain to my students (I student-taught that spring) what had happened. I wasn’t far removed from high school. I can’t imagine having the determination or chutzpah to do what the students at Parkland did.

This could be seen as a liberal book, but it’s not. It’s the story of students having had enough. Kids shouldn’t have to grow up this fast. Kids shouldn’t have to worry about active shooter drills. I liked reading how these kids navigated their way through what they’d been through and the aftermath. I can’t imagine having seen my friends dying.

Understand this: the book isn’t a true crime book. It doesn’t make a big deal about the shooter. This book is about the students and the aftermath. Time could’ve been spent on the shooter and his history. It might have made this a more well-rounded book. But that’s for the author to decide, not me.

I chose this book to read because it was on a list supplied by my local book club. I’m glad I picked it. The writing is clean and crisp. I was sucked right into the story.

Noelle is clearly a good person, but she’s been through some rough times—her mother passed and she’s not wild about Christmas because of it. I get that. The holidays can be tough and a gray time of year. The author did a great job showing that swing in emotions.

One thing that drove me a tiny bit nuts was Noelle’s tendency to be ditzy. Like she was going through the motions. Now, I get it. She’s absorbed in her life and she’s caught up with trying to survive since the passing of her mother. But there were times I wasn’t sure how old she was—she seemed young at times, then older and unobservant other times.

That said, this was a cute book. It’s short, so it’s a good afternoon read. I read this for escapism and it was perfect. There is holiday spirit, a twinge of romance, learning, growing and shoes!! Can’t beat that!

Calliope works in hospice and helps folks to the other side. It’s a depressing job, but I respect her for doing it. She has limitless compassion, which is something lacking in a lot of other people.

Arius is interesting, too. He is a reaper, eventually the Angel of Death. He’s not seen mortals in their lives—just in their death. Watching him discover there are more to mortals than one action, was neat. It was. It reminded me of a couple movies and the awakening within him changed Arius. I liked it.

I loved the way this story sorted itself out and was a satisfying ending. I’m glad I picked this book up. Great read!

This book gives a glimpse behind the facade and proves there’s more to the pretty face than just a pretty face.

I liked how Lowe brings in his childhood in Ohio, how he struggled with being cool and fitting in as well as the breakup of his family. He name drops, but it’s okay. I kind of liked seeing how he navigated through Hollywood. I can’t imagine being in a situation where Martin Sheen is my neighbor and for fun I hang out with Princess Stephanie. He struggles with self-identity and finding his way. The story about the isolation tanks and Andrew McCarthy is especially funny.

If you want a book that’s honest, raw and entertaining, then this might be the book for you.

I’d never read a book by Beverly Jenkins, but I’d seen her name plenty of times. I wish I would’ve grabbed one of her books before now. Wow! I was instantly taken with this story. The writing is crisp and kept me in my seat. I read well past my bedtime and I’m glad. The story was worth it.

The characters are well-rounded and I couldn’t get enough. Drake is a strong man and loyal. I liked how the relationship with Valinda unfolded. She’s determined and sweet, but she’s headstrong, too. I liked their pairing.

I also enjoyed how the author worked the Reconstruction era into the book. Now it wasn’t hard since that’s when it takes place, but so many authors gloss over the eras rather than showcase them. Not so with this book. I felt the hardships, the racism and struggle, but also the love between Valinda, Drake and the LeVeq family.

If you want a book that’s a great read, worthy of missing your bedtime, then this might be the one you’re looking for.

I’ve never read a book by Joanna Shupe and I’m glad I’ve rectified that. This book… I devoured it in a couple hours. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down. I felt like I was there in their world and like I knew the characters.

Mamie’s heart is in the right place. She wants to help. I liked her sense of adventure and her desire to help the less fortunate. I also liked how her position in society and her being a woman was both a deterrent and a spur for her. I loved her pluck.

Then there’s Frank. He’s a problem solver. I liked that, but I also liked that while he was trying to fix Mamie, he wasn’t. Does that make sense? His heart is in the right place and it’s fixed on Mamie. I loved when they got together. They aggravate each other, but it’s all good.

Are you looking for a story that’s sweet, has a little sauce and will keep you in your seat for the duration? Then this might be the one for you.
