Top Five Favorite Thanksgiving Dishes by Sean Michael – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Sean Michael who is visiting with us today to celebrate the re-release of Personal Best 2.

Thank you to Long and Short Reviews for hosting me today!

Top Five lists are actually difficult for me, because I hate choosing favorites. It is easier if there’s a smaller pool of things to choose from, and Thanksgiving is coming up, so I thought I would do my favorite holiday dishes. I have spent many a Thanksgiving in the US with my best friends, so I am familiar with the traditional foods.

Top Five Favorite Thanksgiving Dishes

5. Chex Mix. This is yummy before during and after Thanksgiving as a snack.
4. Biscuits. Who doesn’t love a biscuit?
3. Cranberry salad. This is a dessert – I first had it at my best friends a long time ago and it has become a favorite for not just me, but my entire family, from the spouse and kids, to the inlaws.
2. Brussel Sprouts. Guh. I love them however you cook them, but deep fried with parmesan on them or fried with bacon are my favorite ways to eat them.
1. Devilled eggs. I love these silly things and for some reason only ever have them as a part of pre-thanksgiving dinner munchies. I really ought to simply make them whenever I get the urge for them.

You’ll notice that turkey is not on that list. I’m not a huge fan of turkey. I like it in a sandwich as leftovers and I’m happy to have some on Thanksgiving, but it certainly isn’t the star of the table for me.

smut fixes everything

Swimmer Mike Gauliet is moving up in the elite ranks of the American swim team, despite his repetitive stress injuries. He’s hiding his pain from coach Jessy Turner, not wanting to give in to it or let his coach and lover down, and by the time he gets treatment, it’s almost too late.

Jessy helps Mike heal, both in an out of the bedroom, and their need for each other grows as quickly as Mike’s career. They’re scorching hot and ready to go to the top competitions when another injury forces Mike to the sidelines. Jessy thinks this one is no accident, and Mike has to work hard to recover the lost ground.

Mike needs a break from the nonstop stress of training, so they move to the coast so Mike can recuperate once again. But their struggles don’t end with getting him back in competition form, and they can’t truly call it a victory unless they can find the balance between their romantic relationship and Mike grabbing the success he’s earned.

Stroke, stroke, stroke, turn. Lap.

Mike was beginning to feel the burn, muscles getting tired, the wall getting farther and farther.

Stroke, stroke, stroke, turn. Lap.

One week until they had another meet. Then a month to training camp. Fuck. That was playing with the big boys.

Stroke, stroke, stroke, turn. Lap.

Fuck, he’d lost count. How many had he done? How many were left? Fuck.

Fuck.

Stroke, stroke, stroke, turn. Lap.

A long body sliced through the water and paced him.

Stroke, stroke, stroke, turn. Lap.

Shit, he must have gone over.

Damn it. That meant he went until Coach said stop.

Fuck a duck.

He was supposed to meet the guys for a movie tonight too.

Coach kept moving with him, close enough he could feel the heat of that body in the water next to him.

Stroke, stroke, stroke, turn. Lap.

His heart was pounding, strokes slowing, his arms so heavy.

Stroke, stroke, stroke, turn. Lap.

They did three more, each one harder than the last.

He was shaking by the end, breathing hard, holding on to the wall.

“Sorry, Coach.”

Jessy’s strong body surrounded him, hands next to his on the wall. “Stubborn fool.”

He leaned into those arms, panting. “Who? Me?”

“No, the other guy who damn near drowned out here.” That voice was gruff, angry. Worried.

“Wasn’t gonna drown.” He could swim in his sleep.

“No?” Coach grabbed his hands and yanked him off the wall, and swam back into the middle of the pool with him before letting him go. “Then give me another five.”

He growled, “Could have at least let me have the wall, asshole.”

Then he gritted his teeth and swam, forcing his body to fucking do it. Coach kept pace with him again, never leaving his fucking side. Just waiting for him to screw up. Well, he wasn’t going to. Damn it. He could go four more laps.

Prick.

Asshole.

Bastard.

When Mike made the last lap, Coach got out and pulled him out of the water to lie on the deck. “You stupid fool! If I tossed you back in and told you to give me ten more, you would! Start listening to your fucking body instead of just pushing it all the damned time.” Coach started pacing, muttering to himself.

Mike lay there, panting, waiting for the tremors to stop, his heart to slow.

Coach finally stopped pacing and hauled him up over one shoulder, carrying him into the weight room, and put him down on the matted table to work his muscles with those big hands. “One of these days that stubborn pride is going to get you hurt.”

“Either that or win me a race.” Oh, God, that felt good. So good.

“Pardon me, but I don’t believe you were fucking racing anyone out there today.”

“No. No, I wasn’t. I lost count. I’m sorry, Coach.”

Top Five Favorite Foods by Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga who are celebrating the recent release of their newest book Heart of a Redneck.

Top 5 Favorite Foods

Hey y’all! BA and Jodi here to introduce our new book Heart of a Redneck to y’all. It’s a great city/country romance set in Boulder, Colorado. Gordon is a successful restaurateur from Boston, and Colby is a tile guy from Texas. Between the two of them, they have opinions about food.

Colby’s Favorite Foods

1. King ranch casserole — classic Texas comfort food: cheese, chicken and chiles. Uhn.
2. Chocolate pie — not French silk pie, but the cooked kind. (Colby’s a touch particular about that.)
3. Chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy.
4. Flat nachos — piled ones just won’t do for that Texas boy.
5. Chili — His granny’s recipe, of course. No beans.

Gordon’s Favorite Foods

1. New England Clam Chowder. He’s a Boston boy! It’s the only thing he really misses about living in Boston. Other than his sister.
2. Filet Mignon. Rare. Surf and turf anyone?
3. A western omelette. Even better if you serve it with some fresh salsa and a tequila sunrise. Breakfast is really his favorite meal.
4. The Albóndigas de Cerdo on the Tapas menu at Delmara, his flagship restaurant. Little pork and ricotta meatballs with this amazing, rich tomato sauce. Seriously, his chef is gifted.
5. Pizza. Meat, veggies, extra cheese, whatever you order, he’ll eat it. Except pineapple. And SPAM. Okay, no Hawaiian pizza.

Colby McBride is a blue-collar cowboy trying to make ends meet laying tile in Colorado. A loner by choice, Colby works hard with his hands and finds his peace camping in the mountains outside Boulder. Gordon James is a white-collar restaurateur who owns not one, but two successful establishments in downtown Boulder. He’s a sophisticated urbanite who is devoted to his work and is accustomed to getting what he wants.

The men are friends, but sparks fly when Colby falls in love and decides to show Gordon how much fun a good old boy can be. They’re just beginning to explore their relationship when Gordon’s sister’s suicide leaves him with custody of his five-year-old niece.

Colby comes from a huge family and is eager to help with the girl and to prove his worth to Gordon. But neither of them is ready for the tremendous changes to their already busy lives, or for how this new relationship with Olivia challenges them, complicating the way they interact with each other.

They say opposites attract, but can these two very different men work together to join their disparate lives and form a strong, if highly unlikely, family?

About the Authors:

Jodi Payne takes herself way too seriously and has been known to randomly break out in song. Her men are imperfect but genuine, stubborn but likable, often kinky, and frequently their own worst enemies. They are characters you can’t help but fall in love with while they stumble along the path to their happily ever after. For those looking to get on her good side, Jodi’s addictions include nonfat lattes, Malbec and tequila any way you pour it.

Five Books that Inspired Me to Write BIGGER LOVE by Rick R. Reed – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Rick R. Reed who is visiting with us today to celebrate the release of his newest book Bigger Love.

Five Books that Inspired Me to Write BIGGER LOVE

Bigger Love is set in a high school and it’s about high school students and everything that goes along with being that age—the angst, the hormones, the feeling that everything is life and death. The fascination with love. The fears that you’re too good, not good enough, headed everywhere and headed nowhere.

The books below portray this turbulent time in ways that are so on target, they make my heart ache.

And they’re what I hope I captured too, in creating the world of small town high school senior, Truman Reid. Here, in no particular order, are five reads that are captivating and true not only to the teenage experience, but the human experience.

The Day I Killed James
Catherine Ryan Hyde

Hyde, author of Pay it Forward, gets deep inside the head of a young woman, a survivor, who holds herself responsible for the death of a boy she likes. It’s unsentimental, real, and teaches a lesson about coming to terms with grief and loss. I chose it because she treats her teenagers like adults, and never talks down to their experience, something I tried hard to keep in mind as I wrote Bigger Love.

Thirteen Reasons Why
Jay Asher

This book portrays teenagers so poignantly and so realistically, I was blown away. The book’s central tragedy and the peeling away of the onion layers that led up to it, is handled with incredible sensitivity.

The Fault in Our Stars
John Green

What I love about “Fault” is how John Green makes us care so deeply for two characters—a young man nearing his untimely death and the girl who loves him. He never makes things saccharine and doesn’t shy away from the harsh reality of death and disease. Yet, at the same time, it’s a book filled with hope and the redemptive—and undying—power of love.

Men who suffer with allergy due to sildenafil citrate it causes allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching, etc. tadalafil sales While making use of the steroids, there are a number of side outcome may be visible during initial period of its volume, it should cede once body adapts to its use. levitra sildenafil is a receipt medicine thus requires prescription from a general practitioner to launch the mechanism of its habit. females, and probably workers viagra earlier 50 several years were advised to not use this factor viagra online cure. Becky Albertalli

The reason this one’s on the list is because of its light touch and, oh yes, its humor. Adolescence and young adulthood have angst to spare, but author Albertalli knows that doesn’t have to mean depressing or sad.

Entries from a Hot Pink Notebook
Todd Brown

This first-person coming of age tale, told in journal entries, is sadly out of print and it doesn’t appear there’s much else available from the author. That’s a shame because this is a wonderful, touching book about a young gay boy’s coming to grips with his sexual orientation, with family, and with life. I like to think my Truman Reid would have been best friends with this book’s main character.

Truman Reid is Summitville High’s most out-and-proud senior. He can’t wait to take his fierce, uncompromising self away from his small Ohio River hometown, where he’s suffered more than his share of bullying. He’s looking forward to bright lights and a big city. Maybe he’ll be the first gender-fluid star to ever win an Academy Award. But all that changes on the first day of school when he locks eyes with the most gorgeous hunk he’s ever seen.

Mike Stewart, big, dark-haired, and with the most amazing blue eyes, is new to town. He’s quiet, manly, and has the sexy air of a lost soul. It’s almost love at first sight for Truman. He thinks that love could deepen when Mike becomes part of the stage crew for Harvey, the senior class play Truman’s directing. But is Mike even gay? And how will it work when Truman’s mother is falling for Mike’s dad?

Plus Truman, never the norm, makes a daring and controversial choice for the production that has the whole town up in arms.

See how it all plays out on a stage of love, laughter, tears, and sticking up for one’s essential self….

About the Author: Rick R. Reed draws inspiration from the lives of gay men to craft stories that quicken the heartbeat, engage emotions, and keep the pages turning. Although he dabbles in horror, dark suspense, and comedy, his attention always returns to the power of love. He’s the award-winning and bestselling author of more than fifty works of published fiction and is forever at work on yet another book. Lambda Literary has called him: “A writer that doesn’t disappoint…” You can find him at www.rickrreed.com or www.rickrreedreality.blogspot.com. Rick lives in Palm Springs, CA with his beloved husband and their fierce Chihuahua/Shiba Inu mix.

3) Love Changes Everything – Andrew Lloyd Webber – This song tugs at my romantic heart

4) Music of the Night – Andrew Lloyd Webber – Same as above. My romantic heart soaks it in

5) Hello – From Book of Mormon – Because it always makes me smile.

Pavle Kasun has spent the last four years of his life at the mercy of others. When an opportunity presented itself, he took it, resulting in his rescue. Now the safe houses he’s placed in are being threatened and he needs protection if he is to have any sort of chance at a life.

Chris opens his home to Pavle, but he doesn’t expect Pavle and his story to get under his skin… and stay there. Soon they discover they have more in common than either of them thought. Slowly Pavle comes out of his shell and Chris finds someone who touches his heart. But as the men looking for Pavle close in, they will stop at nothing to get him out of the way. But even if Chris can keep him safe, he might not be able to protect his heart if Pavle moves back home.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

“I’m making breakfast.” Chris put a pan of bacon in the oven and started working on some eggs and toast. “Do you want some juice?”

Pavle nodded. “Yes, thank you,” he said warily, watching him. Pavle watched everything he did, each and every second.
Once the food was ready, Chris placed the plates and utensils, along with juice glasses and some fresh fruit, on a tray and carried it outside. He loved to eat on the patio. Once he set the tray on the table, he turned to find that Pavle hadn’t followed him. Pavle stood in the kitchen doorway, looking outside but not moving.

“Oh my God,” Chris whispered to himself, wondering when the last time had been that Pavle had stayed outside during the day… or at any time. “You can come out,” he said, louder.

Pavle took a step outside, turning his head upward and closing his eyes as the sun shone on his face. He simply stood there as though rediscovering the sun.

“Are you hungry?” Chris asked softly, and Pavle nodded after a second. He walked over, his head craning from side to side. Chris indicated the chair, and Pavle sat down but didn’t eat. “That’s yours,” Chris said, and started eating.

“I no understand,” Pavle said.

Chris paused and set down his fork. “Tell me. You can talk all you like. Talk to me.” God, he was trying to infer what Pavle thought and felt from his actions and inactions, and it was hard as hell.

“I no…,” Pavle started, breathing rapidly. “You… last night….” Agitation rang in his voice. Chris wanted nothing more than to take him in his arms to comfort him, but didn’t dare.

“What about last night?” Chris asked.

Pavle’s eyes swirled with confusion and doubt. Chris waited patiently, letting Pavle think about what he wanted to say. “You no… I have to pay, and….”

Chris shook his head slowly. “No. You don’t have to pay. Marie and I are helping you, and we want nothing in return.” He tapped Pavle’s plate. “You eat all you want. And you don’t have to pay me back.” He was so tempted to take Pavle’s hand to comfort him, but he resisted. “Those days are over. Your body is your own, and no one is going to make you pay for things with it. Not me, not Marie.” Now he hoped Pavle understood. “Go ahead and eat.” He smiled, and Pavle picked up his fork, digging into the food.

Chris finished his breakfast and put his dishes on the tray. Pavle drank his juice and smacked his lips. When Chris took his dishes inside, he brought the bottle and refilled Pavle’s glass. Pavle looked up at him as though wondering what Chris wanted from him, but Chris decided to ignore the look. He’d also brought the coffee pot and refilled his mug and topped off Pavle’s.

Today was his day off, so at least he wasn’t going to have to figure out what to do with Pavle while he was gone, not until Friday when he was back on shift. That gave him a couple of days. His phone chimed and he picked it up off the table. He answered Marie’s text, saying they were doing okay and he was going to take Pavle to the store to get him some clothes. He hoped that was a good idea.

The Royal Vauxhall Tavern by David C. Dawson – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes David C. Dawson who is visiting with us to celebrate today’s release of For the Love of Luke. Check at the bottom of the post for a chance to win a digital copy of the book.

Thank you so much to Long and Short Reviews for letting me stop by!

For the Love of Luke is a story of love and has been a work of love for me. Not just the wonderful heroes Rupert and Luke, but also the British locations they visit in the book.

One of them is a famous pub in London called The Royal Vauxhall Tavern. It’s on the south bank of the River Thames, and is the oldest surviving gay venue in London. It was built by the Victorians, and became popular with gay servicemen on their return from the Second World War.

During the 1980s Freddie Mercury was a regular. His close friend Cleo Rocos describes in her memoir how, in 1988, Mercury disguised Princess Diana as a male model and smuggled her into the Tavern.

These days the Royal Vauxhall Tavern is not only a preserved heritage site, but also a fantastic night out. Two years ago I was privileged to perform on the stage there with The London Gay Men’s Chorus. If you’re in London, take time to go see it!

A handsome naked man. Unconscious, on a bathroom floor.

He’s lost his memory, and someone’s out to kill him.

Who is the mysterious Luke?

British TV anchor and journalist Rupert Pendley-Evans doesn’t do long term relationships.

Nor does he do waifs and strays.

But Luke is different. Luke is a talented American artist with a dark secret in his life.

When Rupert discovers Luke he’s first intrigued, and before he can stop himself, he’s in love.

The aristocratic Rupert is an ambitious TV reporter with a nose for a story and a talent for uncovering the truth.

As he falls deeper in love with Luke, he discovers the reason for Luke’s amnesia.

And the explanation puts them both in mortal danger.

The leathers Rupert brought for Luke were a snug fit. They clung tight to almost every part of his body. Luke admired himself in the full-length mirror. He turned side on. They felt good. He had to admit it. They looked damn good. Tight, black leather jeans enhanced the bulk of his thighs and the narrowness of his waist. They sagged a bit in the ass, but Rupert explained that was necessary to allow Luke to sit comfortably on the motorbike. Luke turned up the collar of the black leather jacket and closed the zips on both sleeves. Kevlar protective panels in the back, sleeves, and shoulders of the jacket filled out the upper part of his torso, adding bulk to his hours of work in the gym. He crossed to the bed and sat to pull on the reinforced bike boots, fasten their zips and Velcro covers.

Luke smoothed his hands across the surface of the leather stretched tight across his thighs and grinned at a stirring in his groin. The sensation both surprised and pleased him. He stood, and the rigid shape of the boots forced him to lean forward, like a skier about to descend a black run. He attempted to stand straight, the upper part of his body compensating for the enforced bend in his knees. The jeans pulled tight against his crotch, and his cock rose to the stimulation of the leather hugging his body.

“Sexy man.” Rupert’s voice came from the doorway. Luke turned. Rupert wore a one-piece racing suit made of red leather. White leather panels stitched into it enhanced the shape of his torso and legs. He crossed the bedroom to stand behind Luke at the mirror and placed his hands on Luke’s thighs. “I’ve not worn those leathers for a long time.” He studied Luke’s reflection in the mirror with an admiring grin. “They fit you really well. How do they feel?”

Luke took Rupert’s hands in his and pulled them to wrap around his waist. “They’re making me horny,” replied Luke. “I was getting a hard-on just standing here, even before you came in.”

Rupert slipped his hand down and caressed the front of Luke’s leathers. “And now you’re rapidly outgrowing those jeans. By the second, it feels like.”

He placed both hands on Luke’s shoulders and pulled him gently forward. He bent his head and kissed the side of Luke’s neck, slowly and tenderly, his tongue warm and moist against Luke’s skin. “I want you right now, the way you look and feel,” breathed Rupert. “But we’ve got to get moving. It should take us only an hour and a half to get there. Come on.”

Top Five Favorite Writing Snacks by Crystel Greene – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Crystel Greene who is celebrating today’s release of Glacier Gold. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win a $10 Amazon gift card.

*****

Hi everyone, I’m so happy to be here at Long and Short Reviews today to celebrate the release of my m/m romance GLACIER GOLD with a Top Five post about my favorite writing snacks. Thanks for having me! ―

I don’t know about you, but I never sit down at my computer to write without some cookies or a piece of cake. My top five snacks are Sachertorte, cheese cake, chocolate cupcakes, shortbread fingers, and brownies. I really hate those health blogs that claim sugar makes you age faster and is basically toxic. I can only hope those scientists are lying!

I have tried the healthier alternatives. Fruit, nuts―all not bad. But not satisfying that certain craving, you know?

I’ve tried to eat muesli while writing too, and even salads, but it has turned out healthy food is a hazard for my keyboard. Cookie crumbs are so much better! I have a pretty effective strategy of dealing with those that involves rotating the keyboard and a special blowing technique. Try the same with a spoonful of muesli or a piece of tomato, and, well, take my word for it: it’s not going to fly. So pastry it is! And ever since I moved to Austria, my favorite has been the Sachertorte.

Have you ever had the chance to try it? It’s a typical Austrian chocolate cake. The original recipe is a secret. But I wouldn’t try to make a Sachertorte myself anyway: I am ace at eating cake, but a little less of a pro when it comes to baking…

Here’s a little excerpt from GLACIER GOLD starring the Sachertorte. Justin came to Austria, Tyrol, for a snowboarding vacation with his two friends, Jay and Carl. Carl is very fond of eating and has a piece of Sachertorte while they discuss Justin’s chances of hitting it off with his crush, local snowboarding instructor Andi.

*****

Jay and Carl refuse to share in my newfound optimism.

Jay especially seems to feel I need some reining in. He acts as if I were an out-of-control fifteen-year-old and he my dad.
When we get ready for dinner, he looks at me askance as I take a turn in front of the mirror.

“Why don’t you choose something more appropriate for a country hotel restaurant for a change? Do you want to burn his eyes out with that shirt?”

It’s a perfectly regular semitransparent satin shirt in magenta. If people tend to look at stuff that’s magenta, that’s hardly my fault.

Jay struggles to make the ends of the belt of his dress pants meet over his stomach.

When Antje moved on, it didn’t take him long to redirect his amorous efforts toward an Italian girl who sits at the table next to ours at dinner every night. She’s with her parents. It’s him who should stop being inappropriate, chatting up people while their parents are watching and while wearing blue dress pants with cowboy boots. And this man has the nerve to comment on my outfit.

Ignoring him, I sit down on my bed and put in my heart-shaped pink rhinestone earrings. I got them at Innsbruck airport, so what could be a more appropriate choice of jewelry for a Tyrolean hotel?

In the mirror I can see Jay give Carl a pointed look, as usual when he feels he needs support. Carl, who’s lounging on his bed with a selection of snacks, gives a tiny nod in response and noisily swallows a chunk of Sachertorte. They’ve been talking about me, the bastards.

“We don’t mean to rain on your parade, dude,” Carl begins, confirming my suspicions, “but what about your studying? Did you get stuff done today?”

Fuck. He knows full well that, no, I didn’t.

“Not to spoil your evening,” he goes on. “But we think that you should get started. Like tonight. You won’t be happy if you fail that test again.”

“So not happy!” Jay affirms.

“I won’t fail! I have time enough for studying on the flight home!”

They exchange a glance that is nothing short of infuriating. Fuck, this is like being on vacation with two fucking parents! I could just as well be that poor Italian chick!

“Okay, dudes, here’s the thing. I have more important stuff to do at the moment than focus on my future. Stuff that can only be done while I’m still here. And you know what I’m talking about.”

“He doesn’t want you!” Jay exclaims, sounding almost hysterical. “Forget it, Justin!”

Up in the Alps, a single night can change your life.

Struggling college student and self-taught graphic artist Justin Bennet isn’t the most self-confident guy, but he knows he’s good at two things: snowboarding and sex. Why does Andi, the hot instructor at the Tyrolean ski resort, pretend Justin doesn’t exist?

Justin becomes all but obsessed with the idea of scoring with the young Austrian. Because for all the man’s reserve, he made it quite obvious he likes Justin—at least from the neck down.

When Justin books a private heliboarding trip with Andi as his guide, he thinks he’s one step away from striking gold.
But then the forces of nature take over, trapping the men in a snowstorm, and things get real. What was supposed to be about some freeriding fun and inviting a closeted guy to start exploring his options suddenly becomes about survival—and the hidden truths of the soul.

My Top Five Favorite Books of All Time by John Inman – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes John Inman who is celebrating today’s release of Nightfall.

My Top Five Favorite Books of All Time

I have loved reading since I was a kid growing up on a farm in Indiana. Once when I was seven or eight, I was rummaging through the attic of our old farmhouse and I came across a set of children’s classics. I had no idea who stashed them there, and neither did my folks. Our farmhouse was well over a hundred years old so my dad said it might have been anyone. Anyway, I started rooting through those books, and before I had finished gobbling up the first volume, I knew I was hooked for life. Reading would be my number one passion from that day forth. The first book below in my list of favorites was that book.

Tom Sawyer — In my mind, I can still see the battered hardback copy I dug out of the attic. It was the first full length book I ever read as a kid. It was musky and smelled of mouse turds and it was the most enthralling string of words I had ever read in my life. The kid was even my age! How could a boy NOT love that book?

Huckleberry Finn — Of course, there’s only one book to grab after Tom Sawyer. Huckleberry Finn, of course. If anything, I think I loved reading about Huck even more than I loved reading about Tom. I still return to both those books from time to time. It’s like revisting old friends.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy — Just as my body began to mature, so did my my little pea brain. My expectations from the books I read became a little more exacting. When I found The Lord of the Rings, I though I’d died and gone to heaven. Now here was a set of books you could really sink your teeth into! When the movie came out, I knew they’d blow it, but they didn’t. I sat in that movie theater with tears in my eyes while the credits scrolled past. Not only had they done it right, they had done it BETTER than right. The movie was perfect. I still read LOTR unfailingly once a year. And I watch the movie even more than that. I think my husband considers shooting me every time he sees me drag it out.

Harry Potter — Oddly, when I got around to becoming pretty damned old, I relapsed back into childhood and fell in love with the Harry Potter books. This series too, I reread every year. I still have trouble reading the one with Professor Umbridge in it. God, I hate that bitch. Of course, Imelda Staunton playing Umbridge in the movies is just as bad. I must say I was heartened when I read an interview with Miss Staunton the other day and she said she hated the woman too. On a slightly different note, I’ve found it fascinating to watch the three kids in the Potter movies grow up and claim their own rights to the world of moviemaking. Especially Daniel Radcliffe. I’m just so proud of all three of them, you’d think I knew them, which of course I don’t.

Revenant — By this time, you might be wondering how I found myself writing gay fiction. Well, again, it was the influence of one book that did that. It wasn’t the first DSP book I read, but it was one of the first, and it left me breathless. Incredibly exciting, amazingly sexy, spooky as hell, and really beautifully written. The book is Revenant by Connie Bailey. For sheer eroticism, I’m not sure I’ve ever read another book that can touch it. If you get a chance, drag it out of mothballs and give it a whirl. You won’t be disappointed.

So there you have it. Those are the books that steered me into a career of writing. And now with over thirty books published, I can say I’ve met some terrific writers, and terrific readers, and yes, even some really terrific editors and publishers. I don’t suppose I’ll ever reach the perfection of those five favorite books of mine, but that doesn’t mean I won’t keep trying as long as I still have someone out there who’s willing to read what I put down on paper.

I hope you enjoy NIGHTFALL. It’s my first journey into writing science fiction, but I think maybe it won’t be my last because it was really a lot of fun. And thanks to everyone at Long and Short Reviews for giving me a chance to spout off. Happy reading, everybody.

John’s advice for anyone who wishes to be a writer? “Set time aside to write every day and do it. Don’t be afraid to share what you’ve written. Feedback is important. When a rejection slip comes in, just tear it up and try again. Keep mailing stuff out. Keep writing and rewriting and then rewrite one more time. Every minute of the struggle is worth it in the end, so don’t give up. Ever. Remember that publishers are a lot like lovers. Sometimes you have to look a long time to find the one that’s right for you.”

Top Five All Time Songs by Andrew Grey – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Andrew Grey who is celebrating today’s release of All for You.

Andrew’s Top 5 All Time Songs
Over the years there are some songs that I have never been able to get out of my head.

1) Play Your Own Kind of Music – Mama Cass Elliott – As a gay man, this song speaks to be in a base level because I have spent my life being different.

2) The Greatest Love of All – Whitney Houston – This song kept me going through some pretty dark times.

3) Wind Beneath My Wings – Bette Midler. Its Midler – need I say more.

4) Dancing Queen – ABBA – This song always makes me want to jump to my feel and dance. It fills me with joy every time.

5) Love Changes Everything – Andrew Lloyd Webber – It appeals to the romantic in me.

The only path to happiness is freedom: the freedom to live and love as the heart wants. Claiming that freedom will take all of the courage one young man has, but he won’t have to face it alone. In small, conservative Sierra Pines, California, Reverend Gabriel is the law. His son, Willy, follows his dictates, until he meets a man in Sacramento and reunites with him in his hometown—right under his father’s nose. Reggie is Sierra Pines’s newly appointed sheriff. His dedication to the job means not flaunting his sexuality, but when he sees Willy again, he can’t escape the feeling that they’re meant to be together. He’ll keep Willy’s secret until Willy is ready to let the world see who he really is. But if going up against the church and the townspeople isn’t enough, the perils of the work Reggie loves so much might mean the end of their romance before it even gets off the ground.

Reggie turned away, took another drink of beer, and snagged a sausage pretzel snack-bite thing that a server had just delivered to the table. Food was a good idea, and he popped one into his mouth and grabbed another just as Vick excused himself and headed to the bathroom.

“Don’t be gone too long or we’ll know what you’ve been doing,” Casey teased. It was an old joke, and Vick flashed Casey the bird before continuing back.

“Uh-oh,” Bobby said, and Reggie looked at him. He tilted his head toward the wall, and Reggie turned. The kid still sat at his table, but now there were two other guys there, one on either side of him. They were big, tough, and had the kid hemmed in. It was a classic intimidation tactic, and the kid’s eyes were like a deer caught in headlights. He stood, probably trying to get away, and one of the men put a hand on his shoulder. Another tactic. The kid sat down, eyes now filling with fear.

“The evil trolls are out tonight,” Casey commented. “Why can’t assholes like that leave everyone alone? For Christ’s sake. All they’re going to do is end up scaring the kid right back into his closet, and it’ll take years before he has the courage to take another step.”

“Reggie, is that a good idea?” Bobby asked, placing a hand gently on his arm.

“Remember Asshole Art?” Reggie asked.

Bobby pulled his hand away, his eyes growing storm-cloud dark, and Bobby nodded. “Go get ’em.”

Reggie drew himself to his full height and strode over to the table as though he owned the place. “Is there a problem here?” He addressed his question to the scared rabbit kid, who was holding the edge of the table like it was a life preserver. “Are they bothering you?”

“We were having a drink with him.” One of the big guys stood slowly, trying to intimidate, but Reggie knew that game. “Go away if you know what’s good for you.” The words came out of Rat Number One’s yellow-toothed mouth, breath smelling like he’d just eaten dinner out of a dumpster. Reggie inhaled. Neither guy smelled like they’d had a bath in a while.

“How about you let him answer for yourself?” Reggie said.

“I… they… I…,” the kid stammered, gripping the table until his knuckles were white, fear ramping up even more.

“I see.” Reggie turned to Rat One and Rat Two. “I suggest you two get lost… now!” He reached into his pocket and flashed his badge quickly, not giving them a chance to really see it. “You have ten seconds to get up and get out, or I’ll call some friends and we’ll check out your cars. See what you’re hiding. Scum like you are always hiding something.” He smiled, and both rats stared at each other, then practically tripped over themselves to get the hell away.

“Do you want to help me make dinner?” Of course, Petey’s kind of help was eating anything that fell on the floor. Petey’s tail wagged, brushing back and forth like a doggie dust mop. “You’ll get yours when I have mine. That’s the deal.”

Petey whined at the injustice.

Clay went to the kitchen, got a container of pasta and sauce that he’d made up over the weekend, and popped it into the microwave. He wasn’t in the mood to cook, and an evening on the sofa in front of the television sounded like a good idea. Clay also made up a small salad and dressed it with ranch. He fed Petey and settled in front of the television, eating while watching the news, changing the channel as soon as the escape story came on.

Petey joined him on the sofa, curling up next to him, his head resting on Clay’s leg.

“I know, buddy. You’re just what I needed.” He patted Petey gently on the head and stroked down his back. Petey blinked up at him with his big brown puppy eyes, and Clay was able to let go of some of the stress of his day. Few things were as relaxing as just spending some quiet time with his dog. Petey never yelled at him and didn’t expect much from him. He just loved him without judgment. There hadn’t been many people in his life that Clay could say that about.

Clay’s phone rang, and Petey barked, then growled. He hated the phone, especially when it interrupted back-rub time. Clay checked the number and answered. “Sheriff, what can I do for you?”

“I suppose that’s the best we can hope for,” Clay said, breathing a sigh of relief as he continued petting Petey.

“Yes.” Sheriff Hunter hesitated. Clay figured he’d called for more than just to give him an update on his fellow deputies. He just had to give him a chance to say what he wanted to say. “With the department down three deputies for a while, we need…. You know Grange is on the loose, and apparently that isn’t enough for him. Judge Phillips received a call threating his safety about an hour ago.”

Clay groaned, realizing where he was going with this. “Sheriff… I….”

Sheriff Hunter sighed. “I know you and Judge Phillips don’t get along. The man could be a royal pain in the behind to Jesus Christ himself, but he needs protection. We know Grange has threatened Phillips in the past, and he’s done it again. Now he’s on the loose, and God knows where he is right now. We have everyone trying to find this asshole, but until we do, Judge Phillips needs to be kept safe.”

Shoulder Season by Jackie North – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Jackie North who is celebrating the recent release of her newest book Shoulder Season.

*****

Thank you Long and Short Reviews for letting me post on your blog today!

Recently, I went to my favorite coffee shop, the one close to my house, to get myself a treat, sit outside in the beautiful weather, and get some work done. The young woman who served me was, as always, polite (everybody who works there is wonderful!), let me dither about what I wanted to order, and, in the end, gave me the coffee with room for cream and the “good looking” cheese Danish that I had my eye on.

Then she tells me she’d gotten a copy of my book and was looking forward to reading it.

A flare of joy welled inside of me, not because of the recognition, of maybe being a little famous for a second or two, but because of the anticipation of connection. That’s what I live for, what I write for, but I think I often forget that part.

When someone asks me, “What do you enjoy about being a writer?” I respond along the lines of “Because of the fun of creating a character,” or “Because I’ve been making up stories since I was a kid.” Those answers, and others like it, are indeed true. But the idea of connecting with another human being is even more true.

I’m a writer and an introvert, and I’d think a lot of writers would tell you the same: they gain energy when they are alone, and being in crowds drains them. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to connect with others, it just means I need to find a different way to do that. Writing is my way.

Being an introvert, I don’t always know how to connect – yet through my writing, I find a way. It’s something I feel comfortable talking about with someone else, especially if they’ve read my book. I feel as if they are already primed to like me, a little bit, and if the conversation runs dry, I can always talk about my next book.

Looking at it that way, it makes it sound as if all I think about, what I live for, is writing. I cannot lie, this is true. I’ve been on the earth for a while, long enough to sift through the detritus and distractions that living throws at you.

I’ve gone through phases of wanting to be a stewardess (which my Nana always referred to as “A glorified waitress in the sky, honey,” and didn’t want me to be one), or a hair dresser (which my mom said meant that I’d “spend the rest of my life giving little old ladies blue rinses,” and didn’t want me to be one, though she encouraged me to be a secretary). Oh my, there were so many choices about what I wanted to be, and I tried some of them out for a time. I even wanted to be a long distance trucker, driving those eighteen-wheelers across the country, if you can believe that.

I always came back to writing. I wrote fan fiction for years, since 1993, and still turn my hand to it from time to time. Now though, in addition to giving me a way to connect with other people, I want my writing to save me from the corporate world, so I’m focusing on that. I write, I revise, I work with cover artists and editors, I format, I market. It’s a lot of work, but one day it’ll save me from yet another corporate meeting in a room with no windows.

As Dreamspinner is kindly publishing my book Shoulder Season, they are helping me get one more step towards that dream. Though, as yet, I’m still working on my communication skills so that I don’t stand there open mouthed when someone tells me they want to read one of my books.

Also, I thought I’d share an excerpt from my upcoming book!

Solvin gave him a smile as he clambered in. When Ben was settled beside him, Solvin asked a question in Icelandic, and the taxi driver answered, and off they went, down the placid streets of Reykjavik.

“It’s called the Sun Voyager, the boat of dreams,” said Solvin, and he looked at Ben as he said it. “It represents hope and new beginnings.”

New beginnings seemed to be what Iceland had become for Ben, a country where he could start as he meant to go on and where every conversation didn’t end in an argument, and cups of coffee could be drunk in a casual way, with no need to rush off afterward. He settled back in his seat, and when his hand touched Solvin’s thigh, he left it in place and brushed the backs of his fingers along the material of Solvin’s jeans. Not only did Solvin not move away or push Ben’s hand off, he dipped his head and smiled at Ben as though they shared a secret the taxi driver didn’t need to know about.

All the way through town, Ben left his hand there, looked at the blush on Solvin’s cheeks, and thought about new beginnings.

Two young men from two different countries find a common language as they recover from broken hearts and broken bones. Can they rebuild their lives together?

Ben’s boyfriend has not only dumped him, he’s also cancelled their mutual travel plans. Since Ben has the time off and the money saved up, he decides to travel anyway, and based on a last-minute, very inexpensive red-eye airline fare, ends up in Reykjavik, Iceland.

He’s ill-prepared for the weather and knows nothing about the country, so he considers flying home the next day. Except his new neighbor, Solvin, a local Icelander who is currently on leave from work due to a car accident, shows up with a cane and shoulder sling and literally falls into Ben’s apartment. It’s the beginning of an adventure that might show Ben how good life can be… and that coming home sometimes means traveling halfway around the world.

About the Author: Jackie North has been writing stories since grade school and spent years absorbing the mainstream romances that she found at her local grocery store. Her dream was to someday leave her corporate day job behind and travel the world. She also wanted to put her English degree to good use and write romance novels, because for years she’s had a never-ending movie of made-up love stories in her head that simply wouldn’t leave her alone.

As fate would have it, she discovered m/m romance and decided that men falling in love with other men was exactly what she wanted to write books about. In this dazzling new world, she turned her grocery-store romance ideas around and is now putting them to paper as fast as her fingers can type. She creates characters who are a bit flawed and broken, who find themselves on the edge of society, and maybe a few who are a little bit lost, but who all deserve a happily ever after. (And she makes sure they get it!)

She likes long walks on the beach, the smell of lavender and rainstorms, and enjoys sleeping in on snowy mornings. She is especially fond of pizza and beer and, when time allows, long road trips with soda fountain drinks and rock and roll music. In her heart, there is peace to be found everywhere, but since in the real world this isn’t always true, Jackie writes for love.
